Bananarama – Cruel Summer: I’m not a big eighties guy and I don’t like a lot of female sings but this is such a great exception to both those rules. This bass driven song will probably be a hit cover soon but until then I recommend downloading and enjoying the classic. The opening riff will hold you through to the end, I guarantee

The Flaming Lips – Watching The Planets: I’ve never seen the appeal of this band. Usually too light for my taste but this raw and chaotic song is fantastic. Their new album Embryonic is available in stores now – check it out if you’re a fan and maybe download a couple other songs first if you’re not.

Weezer – Run Over By A Truck: The perfect song to get you pumped up if you’re having a bad day. We were all let down by their last release but, trust me, Raditude is worth your money. It’s a very fun album and they really got back to their core. Fans and newcomers alike will be pleased with their newest release. Lucky for you – it came out today!

Wolfmother – Cosmic Egg: The title track for the Aussie’s second album is probably the best on the record. They’ve lost a lot of their originality [having switched all the members of the band. Only Andrew Stockdale returns] but they still entertain and while I’d only recommend the album to people with a good amount of disposable income – you won’t be upset with yourself if you do choose to roll the dice.

Muse – I Belong To You: With mixed reviews coming in I want to remind all of you who haven’t heard this album that it’s phenomenal. They are one of the most talented and dynamic groups out there now and this song is one of the best off their new CD “The Resistence”. If I could take the time to review the album I’d probably give it an 8.5 out of ten. Totally worth the money. As a bonus review check out their three part symphony titled: Exogenesis

8. Don’t Stop Believing – Journey And the cheese just keeps on comin’, takes a while to get going this song. It’s a great song but not a Shower Music classic. Expect it to drop next month!

Love in the First Degree – Banarama I was on the balcony of the VIP area at Manchester Pride with this lad on my knee screaming that all he wanted to hear was “Guilty as a Girl Could Be”, they insisted on throwing ‘new’ stuff at us and eventually played this and VENUS (at the request of a drunk drag queen in the front row). Ah the memories….from what I can remember!

• 11. I Kissed A Girl – Katy Perry I read something this week that blamed Poptastic in Canal St for drumming this into our heads over the past year. I quite agree. I kissed a girl too, was nice. Didn’t do much for me though.

• 14. The Chase - KANE (Christian Kane) Now that Chris is a big star about to release a proper record, his first album has been deleted but if you’re a lil bit country and a lil bit rock n roll… this is a good album to get. Otherwise catch him as Lindsay McDonald in ‘Angel’ or his new US TV thing.
• 18. Footloose – Kenny Loggins This is a great shower song and I’m shocked it’s not higher… la Bacon. Bad film. Good song. Kenny Loggins was a bit of a hit maker for 80’s films wasn’t he…ah. Pure cheese!
• 22. Philadelphia Freedom – Elton John This list would not be complete without the presence of the Queen of England. This is a choon and a half.
• 23. Heaven – Cheryl Cole Stand out track of the debut album of our Cheryl. It’s trancey, good vocal… and a bit of Black Eyed Pea magic in their too.
• 24. Condemnation - Depeche Mode
• 27. Sweet Home Alabama – Lyn Skyn It’s the opening riff man, all about that opening!
• 28. I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas A reminder of the best week of my life ever, this song has Manchester Pride 09 all over it. Bouncing along to the rappy bit and everyone knowing the words? Fabulous!
• 36. Haven’t Met You Yet – Michael Buble He sings, have you heard him talk? Have you seen him? Phwoar! Give this a listen and I swear you will be smiling a bigger smile…if not I want to know why!
• 37. Remedy – Little Boots Another Pride 09 reminder, everyone went crazy for this and it was hammered by the DJ, sung live by LB herself and played to death by me at the time so no wonder it’s slipped lower now.
• 45. Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now – the Smiths Get well soon Moz!

Quirky welsh popstress Marina and the Diamonds releases her first single from her hotly anticipated album Family Jewels next month, the re-recorded Mowgli’s Road. The video was released just a few days ago, and is a pretty cool looking snippet.

Marina and the Diamond’s music sounds like a heady mix of Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes and early Bananarama, and much of her other songs from the Crown Jewels EP are keyboard based ballad type things – like the pretty and melancholy “I am not a Robot”. Directed by Rankin and Chris Cottam no less, this video is sparkletastic.

Marina also has a pretty cool style, wearing vintage cheerleading outfits on stage.

The Prodigy are set to headline the first day of the festival today (June 12), playing the bash’s Main Stage after sets by Basement Jaxx and Pendulum.

Elsewhere on the Main Stage bill today are The Ting Tings and Sneaky Sound System.

Meanwhile, the ’s Big Top tent features a ‘Girl’s Night Out‘-themed line up that includes Ladyhawke, Pixie Lott, Noisettes and Bananarama.

Well, 1983 is probably as far back as my musical memory goes and I’m looking forward to seeing what songs they pick for the series.

A lot of the soundtrack so far has been fairly mainstream or rock, and definitely guitar based, which I suppose is reflective of the nation’s tastes back then. As I was 7 in 1983, pop is what I remember most. There are some great soul tracks from that year but I don’t expect they’ll feature.

Today’s Song Spotlight is “A Trick of the Night,” from Bananarama’s 1986 album, True Confessions. I remember being in the sixth grade when I was hearing this song on my local CHR/Top 40 radio station. The song really stood out to me, because it sounded a little different from the other songs being played on the station at the time. At first listen, you wouldn’t think this would be a song that would attract the interest of an 11 or 12-year-old girl (I can’t remember when exactly during my sixth grade year that this song was released, that’s why I can’t definitely pinpoint how old I was at the time), especailly a girl who was very into the sugary pop sounds of the songs on the cartoon show, Jem. But it’s one of those songs that managed to grab my interest back then, and one that I have continued to like for over 20 years now. 20 years… yikes, I’m feeling old!

When I saw this video on YouTube, I have to admit having no recollection of ever seeing it on MTV, because it didn’t look familiar to me. MTV might have played it at the time “A Trick of the Night” was a single, but I honestly don’t remember this video. After watching it, though, I realized there was nothing overly spectacular about the video to make it stand out… which is disappointing, considering how much I like this song…

Andrew Ridgeley made news this week, because he committed the heinous crime of…ageing. Balding, grey haired and just a little wrinkled; his body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to and yet in this world of youth and shininess, he’s not allowed to do this. Little wonder that all levels of cosmetic procedures from Botox and hair plugs to whole body lifts are being pursued at such high levels.

Isn’t it a bitch being in the public eye? If Monsieur Ridgeley were a Joe soap rather than the ridiculously good-looking half of WHAM! One of the biggest groups of the 80s, his worst humiliation would’ve been a comparison of grey hairs and beer guts at a school reunion. Since he left that crazy business called show over 20 years ago he’s been holed up in Cornwall with his long-term partner, Keren Woodward from Bananarama. He’s also been surfing, golfing and involving himself in Eco issues and we mustn’t forget that he’s making a tidy sum every year from being the co-writer of Careless Whisper, which kicked off the solo career of one George Michael. That all these ingredients for what I think is a happy and valuable creative life can be boiled down by gossip columns to how bald and grey he is in comparison to the dark, lustrous hair of yesteryear, is spiteful and can only come from people whose lives are smaller than walnuts.

He’s getting older and he’s probably doing better than you. Get over it.

Italian producer Rico Bernasconi comes up with a very Italian music video. Simple in storyline, simple in visual style, but eternal in music video. A pair of models are lounging poolside in bikini thong swimwear. Bernasconi remixes the “Cruel Summer” version from Swedish band Ace of Bases. It’s an updated sound for a classic 80s dance song.

Det här är en av tidernas bästa låtar alla kategorier. Dessutom är den så extremt “slick” så man känner sig supercool bara man lyssnar på den. Få låtar har den inverkan att man tycker sig känna att hela ens karaktär förändras när man lyssnar på dem. Men det här är en sån låt och det är dessutom en låt som funkar både när man ska softa lite som när man känner sig på riktigt partyhumör. Fast om det är party så måste man ju spela 12’an, annars blir det ju ingen riktig fest.

Herrarna i SAW-kollektivet hade en makalös förmåga att plocka fram det bästa ur de artisterna de tog in i sin makalösa popfabrik på 80-talet. Samtidigt som deras närmast industriella produktion av musik ter sig lite skrämmande så kan man inte annat än fascineras över hur hållbara många av de hitsen har visat sig vara. Det som då verkade vara lite av en slit-och-släng-vara, skapat för att hamna högt på listorna under en begränsad tid, ja det funkar än idag och “slits” med den äran i bl.a min MP3-spelare med jämna mellanrum.

Kom precis på en lista som borde snickras ihop och det är listan över tidernas bästa SAW-låtar och det är en lista som lär ta rätt lång tid att snickra ihop för det finns på tok för mycket bra låtar att välja emellan. Men ett stalltips är att Princess, Sinitta och Bananarama hamnar högt på min SAW-lista.
