The King of Iron Fist Tournament returns with the latest installment, Tekken 6. The Tekken series ha

The King of Iron Fist Tournament returns with the latest installment, Tekken 6. The Tekken series has become a top contender in the fighting game industy, and this year has truly been a game for Fighting game fans with releases of major titles like Blazblue and Street Fighter IV. Does Tekken have what it takes to knockout the competition and go to the top?

Tekken 6 does not stray far from the formula that has kept the series going. The system uses four buttons to control the limbs of the characters, but its much simpler than it sounds. You use the buttons in combonation with directional pad inputs to create moves that can chain to combos, in true fighting game fashion. While not completly new, the gameplay has receieved refinements that change up gameplay styles. Added into is the Rage System that activates as a characters life dips to a low point. While not changing actually gameplay, it leads to quicker matchs and some tricky situations. Characters also now bounce much more when they hit the floor, which allows the other player to continue a combo after smacking a character down to the floor. This makes for some truly amazing combos. While characters themselves have seen moveset refinements and additions, the characters are mostly faithful to their previous counter-parts. The new characters are welcome additions to the tekken roster, adding even more variety to the mix. Characters like Bob and Lars add new and interesting fighting styles to the game.

While gameplay itself hasn’t changed much, the amount of different modes has increased. Added in is online multi-player that allows two players to battle it out in player matchs or ranked matchs with their customized characters or normal characters. While online is a great addition, it still has problems such as input lag that are present in both versions. Also added is a new campaign mode that is essentially the story mode of the game. The campagin mode revolves around the characters Lars and Alisa. The campagin is a throwback to previous tekken force modes, allowing players to play an arcade-style brawler campaign that uses moves for characters from the main game. While this sounds great, it lacks alot because it is repetative in gameplay and the control scheme is problamatic. While it is a nice addition, the reason to play the campaign mode is to gain more in-game money to customize your characters. Character customization is a feature from the previous tekken that has become even more defined in this installment, with more options of clothing for characters being made available for purchase as you progress through the campaign. The customization feature is vast and allows people to make very unique looking characters to use.

The style in Tekken 6 hasn’t changed much, with most character models staying relativly similar to their previous Tekken models. Tekken 6 keeps the intense, cinamatic vibe that previous installments had with detailed level structure and impressive effects. But, for Tekken fans what really matters is the gameplay, and as im sure you can tell at this point, the gameplay is good…very good. With the deepest combat out of the whole series and some of the most fun characters in the series, Tekken 6 truely stands out from the pack, and with the amount of fighting games this year it has alot of contenders. Tekken 6 is a must-buy for Tekken fans, and if your a fighting game fan or just slightly interested in Tekken, I think Tekken 6 may just suprise you.

They are back!

1000 of kids were feeding, playing and killing them everyday and now they are back! The Tamagotchi!

The new Tamagotchi ID from Bandai actually looks exactly like the old one, with the difference that it is equipped with a 1.44 inch colour screen. You will be able to purchase it from the 23rd of November on only in Japan for a price of 38 euros. They will be available in six different colours: pink, blue, white, yellow, green and purple. On top of that they’ve got a great feature: You can by new accessories, rare items and mini games over your cell phone and transfer them via infra-red to your Tamagotchi.

I think it’s a fantastic idea, but what cellphone still supports infra-red? What about Bluetooth or WiFi? I think Bandai overslept the trend. Specially in Japan where they have the latest generation of cellphones I really doubt that there are a lot of cellphones left with infra-red.

Our cellphones are powerful enough to play any kind of simulation and there are all sorts of games you can by just for a few euros. What’s the point of buying a Tamagotchi?

Bandai probably focuses on children and therefore it’s ok. Kids are going to be happy with this product, specially now that your pet is in colour. If you want to get a few more informations about these cute little pets you should read this article.

The Tamagotchis even have their own TV-Show on you tube. Of course produced by Bandai!

First Published Saturday 21 November 2009 here at Ace Gamez – Summarising the entire back story of the Tekken series is a massive task thanks to the fact that we never really know which character’s ending is considered canon. Plus, the whole ‘daddy issues’ chess game of power between the Mishima bloodline has more twists, turns and double entendres than an interview with Hideo Kojima. It is seriously convoluted and, at times, improbable. I mean how many times can geriatric megalomaniac Heihachi be thrown into a volcano or fired off a giant cliff and still return with not so much as a scratch? At least a fracture or a scraped knee would have been believable, but really? Originally a hallmark series for Sony consoles and a launch title for both PSOne and PS2, this sequel may have arrived late in the generation and lost its exclusivity to Xbox 360, but has this tardy re-emergence had a negative effect on the winning formula?

Well typically, a little extra development time works wonders for observing the competition, researching the wants and needs of the fan base and delivering all of these observations in a competent and well-crafted package. Tekken 6 delivers an exemplary arcade mode and painfully detailed visuals, but falls in to the trap that too many modern games seem to blindly stumble in to time and time again. The problem is that we are living in a generation that seems to demand online features, multiple modes and a gamut of customisation options. As a result, too many developers will tack on a lot of extras in the hope that the ‘less is more’ rule will kick in and that the game will be awarded a rake of top marks from critics. Granted, Namco does deserve brownie points for delivering a pretty exhaustive package, but it is a package that feels too lumbered with naff modes, questionable decisions and throwaway features to be designated as a pure Tekken experience.

For starters, almost every one of the 40+ character roster is unlocked from the moment you pop in the disc. Part of the allure of Tekken was that you were always keen to play through the story mode and unlock a new character every time you completed the game. Not only did this make the game longer, but it gave you incentive to play as every character and become accustomed to their fighting style and maybe, just maybe, you would find yourself a new favourite character in the process. Instead you are steamrollered by a tidal wave of characters from the word go and, if you are new to the series, you will probably feel a tad overwhelmed by the breadth of choice. For example, If you are a die-hard Law player and you really have no desire to play with anyone else, then chances are you won’t and you will skip straight to the versus modes.

It’s a baffling decision by Namco, but again it shows that the developer has pandered to this recently recurring notion that players don’t want to be forced to play through a game before unlocking all of the available multiplayer content. Yeah, thanks a lot Guitar Hero and Rock Band! The only alternative to the straight arcade mode is an incredibly dire story campaign that players of previous games will recognise as another sloppy re-hash of Tekken 3’s Force mode. So far, none of these side-scrolling, Streets of Rage wannabes have been any fun, verging on the realm of budget shovelware, rather than a competent and fully-fledged extension of the core game. It follows Lars, one of the leaders of Jin Kazama’s Tekken Force unit as he attempts to secure the scarily doll-like Alisa Bosconovitch from a testing lab. Oh and she’s also a robot with a detachable head and saw blades for arms.

Again, this incredibly ludicrous plot, coupled with the overall shoddiness of the game mode is proof that sometimes less is more. Had this game simply consisted of refined and painfully balanced arcade and multiplayer modes, this could have been the best entry to the series yet. Instead, Story mode gives us dodgy cameras, a barely functional lock-on mechanic and a stripped down move set complete with throw moves that only work when they feel like it. It’s certainly not a short mode, but this just highlights what a tedious slog the whole thing is. Where previous Tekken games let you play through each character’s story via arcade mode, here you must slog through this campaign and unlock each fighter before you can view their ending cinematic. It’s an odd choice to make players suffer through the slack campaign to view these scenes and while most of them are great to watch, the method is far from inspiring.

The only upside is that you will progressively unlock new customisation items throughout the campaign, ranging from simple items of clothing to special accessories that give your character stat boosts such as regenerative health and increased attack power. Perhaps the coolest feature is character-specific weapons such as a pair of assault rifles for Lars or Law’s Nunchucks . While these look impressive they remain balanced, keeping everything on a level playing field. For example, Brian Fury gets a mini-gun, which isn’t exactly fair game in what is supposed to be a hand-to-hand fighting tournament.

On the other hand, the actual core arcade mode is a fine-tuned piece of mastery. New characters are always a gamble, but here each of the six newcomers are superbly crafted, boasting unique move sets and a diverse range of fighting styles. The slinky Zafina is a strong addition for her double-jointed, almost boneless movement that smacks of Soul Calibur IV’s freakish gimp Voldo, but without the ugly. She almost mimics Lei thanks to her multiple stances and also bears elements of Xiaoyu, thanks to her low crouching stance that allows for a range of devastating follow-up attacks. Although the influences are clear, she is incredibly unpredictable and this odd movement makes her a formidable opponent.

In true Tekken fashion, the end boss Azazel is an absolute cheesemonger, battering you in seconds with a ludicrous barrage of laser blasts and literally earth-shattering magical attacks that are simply infuriating. Forget Street Fighter IV’s bald badass Seth, this demigod entity really takes the cheddar, with an unpredictable move set and AI that reacts with split second precision. At least Seth had predictable traits and once you got these ingrained in your memory, he was a piece of cake. Azazel on the other hand is a real sticking point that throws all sense of skill out the window in yet another disappointing final battle.

The insanely tough boss battle is a staple of the genre, but Tekken 6 isn’t entirely set in its ways. Instead of simply giving each of the classic characters a visual makeover, Namco has tweaked and re-balanced the move sets of all of the series mainstays to make sure every fighter exists on a level playing field. As such, you may need to spend some time with your favourite character to re-adjust to these changes, which range from subtle additions or omissions to parts of a combo chain, to the deletion or insertion of moves altogether. Another new fight mechanic is Rage, a last-minute attack boost that is granted whenever a player is dangerously close to being knocked out. This opens a last-ditch window that allows players to turn the tide of battle and in some cases this really does ramp up the tension. There is also a new Bound system that lets you smash opponents off the arena floor and launch them into the air to for juggle combo possibilities.

As the game has been in development since 2006, the visuals can show their age at points, failing to match the painstaking detail of Namco stable-mate Soul Calibur IV. But for the best part, this is as razor sharp as they come, with each character rendered in suitably chunky style and flourishes of motion blur thrown in to underline the frantic pace of every battle. The stages themselves are a treat for the eyes, throwing your fighters head to head on neon-lit rooftops that tower above a sprawling metropolis, to a sunny farm complete with animals that can be knocked about like bouncy balls. So quite far removed from the realistic settings of past Tekken games, but colourful nonetheless. Many stages are also multi-tiered with collapsible floors. If you smash your opponent off the ground enough times, the floor will give way, causing both players to fall to the next level. This looks great when it happens, but if either player happens to be sprawled out on the ground when the drop occurs they will lose a significant chunk of their health once they hit the lower floor, which can seem a tad unfair at times.

So while the offline modes are a mixed bag ranging from the mundane to the magnificent, it is the online element of Tekken 6 that stings the most. It has become vital for developers of fighting games to really nail online modes to push longevity, but some genuinely crippling lag sours the experience. Playing with people on your friends list seems to run much smoother then challenging random fighters but then again, the loading time for each match can often border on the unacceptable. The ranking system from Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection makes a welcome return, awarding you with GP points for each victory. If you lose a fight, you are given a chance to earn GP through a neat fruit machine system that softens the blow of a crippling defeat somewhat. Its functional, but is still far from the sprawling tournaments and deep levelling up systems that could have been.

It is difficult to bemoan such a generous package when it delivers so many modes, superb new characters and an intricately balanced fight mechanic. Offline multiplayer will always be a key draw for Tekken, but without a lag-free online mode to back it up, the entire experience suffers as a result. While a welcome online patch is currently in the works, it still doesn’t excuse the game shipping with such glaring issues. The meagre campaign mode is another thorn in the side of Tekken 6 and as such, the game simply fails to stack up against the slick perfection of Street Fighter IV. It will be interesting to see what patches and DLC will become available in time and whether or not they redeem the package.

Aaaaaaand Keita does it again. This time in HGUC fashion. This is his custom HGUC Hi-Nu Gundam HWS. You probably remember seeing those three letters at the end of the Nu Gundam designation.

I honestly don’t recall seeing a Hi-Nu Gundam with HWS parts. HWS parts were originally used on the Nu Gundam. And for those who played SRW, this was a nifty feature because it gave the Nu Gundam unit a double life ability (HWS gets destroyed, parts are jettisoned, Nu Gundam is new and shiny and damage-free).

Seeing the HWS parts on the Hi-Nu though is an interesting sight to see especially for this HGUC version which mimics the MG version that Bandai had released before. The HWS parts give it the proper bulky feel that the Hi-Nu was known for. See, the Nu Gundam was the slender, sleek version. The Hi-Nu was just a towering unit of massive firepower. Having the HWS parts added gives the HGUC Hi-Nu the girth to look menacing.

But this isn’t the first time HWS parts were considered to be used on the Hi-Nu. I remember Ngee Khiong mentioning Vicious Project and their conversion parts for the Master Grade version of the Hi-Nu. I’m just not too fond of the feet since they look like swimming flippers instead of mecha feet. But the HWS parts are pretty much loyal to the original Nu Gundam HWS parts design.

Hit up the image link to go to Keita’s site and see the rest of the images. It never fails to amaze me how he puts metal parts on such a small kit. And I absolutely love that massive white beam rifle.

Hiyee~

This is the third time that I’ve revamped my blog, and hopefully it’s the last. ^^;

Recently, I haven’t been posting something sensible; maybe because time is not permitting me to. (especially with all the hauls that I’m eagerly anticipating this end of the November… so many deals and negotiations to attend to ^^; ) But for a quick recap of what’s been going on lately:

1. Project Ranka’s going smoothly and it’s almost finished. (yaaaaay!! but no pics yet ^^; )

2. I was able to pull off a miracle. (meaning I’m getting that haul I’ve been SO crazy about)

3. Will be buying another toy tomorrow. (a Max Factory one)

4. I saw this Macross poem that I just find so hilarious. (yup, we share the sentiments regarding Misa Hayase XD)

5. I’ve been eye-ing on this one:

The Bandai 1/72 VF-27 Lucifer. (piloted by Brera Sterne) The sexiest Variable Fighter in the Frontier series, if I may say (sleek, right?) and just look at that color; it completely resembles that of Macross Zero’s Noir… the main reason why I fell in love with this Valk. It’s a sure buy!!!

Oh! and hope you like my blog’s new look~

Prepare for another scroll-fest. The long overdue final scenes of the MG Turn A Gundam are done ^^. Felt I could’ve done better though but time budget is pretty strict and I should probably start practicing on making special effects since it might help with the overall feel ^^;. With that said, my MG Turn A Gundam Review is officially complete. Enjoy!

The Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. Eight Elements from Code Geass has finally arrived in figure form from Bandai

The Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. Eight Elements from Code Geass has finally arrived in figure form from Bandai’s Robot Damashii line, and let me tell you right away that the wait was worth it. Bandai have put together another extremely solid entry in their Robot Damashii line, topping the already-impressive quality of their Lancelot Albion figure. After the arsenal of accessories that figure came with, some may be disappointed to see a few less items in the box with the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N., but there are a couple of things to consider. First, the Guren itself is a bit larger than the Lancelot. Secondly, and no less importantly, Bandai have included just about all the accessories the figure needed. Of course you may feel differently, but I think that including accessories just for the sake of it is pointless and doesn’t add any real value, so I’m quite happy with what is in the box here… not to mention the excellent figure itself.

So what is included? Along with the Knightmare Frame itself, you’ll find two slash harkens (plus their unfired forms which attach to the shoulder joint), an MVS fork knife, two spare left hands (making three in total: an open palm, a fist and a hand for holding the knife), a harken booster and energy disc for use with the Radiant Wave Surger (the Guren’s right arm) and, of course, the incredible energy wings that set the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. and Lancelot Albion apart from the rest of the Knightmare Frames in Code Geass. Like the Albion, you’ll also get two small pieces to act as “closed” wings.

All of those accessories are pretty self-explanatory, except perhaps for the accessories pertaining to the Radiant Wave Surger. The harken booster is what enables the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. to fire its right forearm like a slash harken, and while you can attach the booster to the figure you can’t actually display it in a mid-firing position as there’s no wire included to do so. I don’t know why Bandai didn’t include– no wait, I know exactly why they didn’t include one: they’ll be releasing an additional accessory set for the Lancelot Albion and Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. called the Hyper Set early next year. I’ve seen people suggest that you could just buy a piece of wire but those people probably haven’t seen the figure; sadly it’s not that simple. The wire that comes with the Hyper Set doesn’t attach to the figure through holes that are already there, it has its own connectors that you’d need to emulate if you wanted a decent solution. It’s a little disappointing to see Bandai exclude such a simple accessory from being included with the figure.

Missing wires notwithstanding, everything that should be in the box with the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. is in there… including a silly piece of green plastic that’s supposed to look like an energy disc to be fired from the Radiant Wave Surger. It’s nicely coloured and textured, but personally I think effects parts of this nature rarely work. The aforementioned Hyper Set includes an alternative red version, which I don’t think makes much difference in terms of looking like an energy disc. Bandai have done a decent job with the construction on this piece, but it’s just not an accessory that I think works and I’d have preferred if they included a wire for the harken booster instead.

Aside from these relatively minor issues with accessories, I have nothing to complain about with this figure. If anyone is still on the fence about the Robot Damashii line, the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. should win you over. The colouring, build quality and finish are impeccable, and the design is very faithful to the source material. There’s plenty of articulation, allowing you to recreate most poses from the anime with joints that are solid and tight yet easy to adjust without feeling like you’re going to break them. The energy wings are much more richly coloured that the Lancelot Albion’s, are more posable thanks to an extra joint in the middle and really make the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. stand out amongst your figure collection. All up, this is a stunning figure of a really great mech design. For anything it suffers with accessory oddities, it makes up for in sheer aesthetic and construction quality. If you’re a Code Geass fan and didn’t order this figure during the long wait for its release, don’t wait any longer: this is a must have.

Before we get started, Splatterhouse is definitely not involved with the Friday the 13th series of m

Before we get started, Splatterhouse is definitely not involved with the Friday the 13th series of movies. Even though some of the settings look familiar, and the main character is sort of similar to Jason Voorhess. We’ll just keep this hush hush and pretend we hadn’t noticed, Ok? Good.

If you never had the chance to play Splatterhouse then you may have missed your chance unfortunately. Copies are hard to come by, and recently one sold on eBay for just under £37! With a remake not too far away I wanted to write a short piece on the original, a game worthy of my blood, sweat and tears.

The game is set in a place called West Mansion, or to those on the inside “Splatterhouse”. Living there was feared parapsychologist (more than a mouthful) Dr West. He undertook several gruesome experiments in his research labs, and people who tried to investigate were never seen again. So, along come two parapsychology students, Rick and Jennifer. Who decide it’s a great idea for them to investigate the West Mansion to aid them in a school project (on a scale of stupidness, this ranks pretty high). In the house, Jennifer is abducted, Rick knocked unconcious and a whole can of whoop ass is about to take place. Rick wakes up drenched in blood and to his amazement he is wearing a mask, nicknamed the terror mask (sack the creative minds please). To cut a long story short, Rick must work with the terror mask and travel through the “Splatterhouse” to rescue Jennifer.

Splatterhouse bases itself on a very linear side scrolling format, punch, kick and special attack. Simples. Only moving left and right and not moving in and out of the screen offers the player a very limited experience. For it’s time the game is very detailed, with a variety of monsters and ghouls to hack your way through. Something about decapitating a giant worm is rather satisfying. Although after the 20th decap it gets pretty tedious. The only major improvement needed in the game is its longevity, hopefully something rectified in the remake. So come on Bandai Namco make it happen!
