Bang & Olufsen. A Danish company founded in 1925 who produce extremely high quality and beautifully designed electronic goods such as sound systems, televisions and telephones. They have always been at the front of the line, or very near the front, when it came to sound quality and the general experience of using their products.

Up until very recently, my only experiences of their products was either ogling them through the window of the B&O shop in Perth, or at the home of a family friend who had one of their television. They certainly could capture the imagination of the user whether or not they have used one of their products before. About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I decided to purchase my first Bang & Olufsen product. Something which I had been wanting for a long time, and something which I knew would be £90 well spent. A pair of A8 earphones.

When they arrived, there was the usual sense of excitement you get when unboxing or unpacking something for the first time. The anticipation, the tension, the unrivalled sense of proud ownership. Holding the earphones in my hands, you could tell alot of time had been spent on materials, and build. Absolutely brilliant. The moving mechanisms on them are extremely smooth too. The pneumatic type arm which extends the height of the earphone is like cutting butter with a blow torch, effortless. The same goes for rotating the earpiece and the top ear support component.

Alot of time was clearly spent making these earphones stand out. They are not the same as all the other earphones which are pretty much one size fits all and don’t, these ones really do fit all thanks to the huge range of movement in them.

Overall, I am pleased to say that they are one of the best purchases I have ever made, and they have been very well used over the past few weeks already. Here’s hoping that they last a very long time too, and may this be the first of many B&O products to come into my possession.

Is it not just brilliant when you order something and when it comes, you get to unwrap it and it is like your birthday, but only this time you know what it is and it is also something you actually want. The only thing which has the ability to top that feeling is if you have bought more than one thing from different places and they all arrive at the same time. A wonderful feeling.

The past couple of weeks have been spent waiting for some things to arrive, and it was only today (or yesterday, depending on whether or not I post this on the Sunday or the Monday) that I had the opportunity to pick them up from home and then open them. It just so happens that they all relate to design in one form or another so I thought I would share what I got.

1. Bang & Olufsen A8 earphones – A few weeks ago when my old pair of earphones died, I thought I would treat myself with something that I have wanted for a very long time, and it just so happens to be my first foray into products from the Danish company. Already having used them extensively, I can say they are extremely comfortable to wear and have great sound, also they have exquisite detail. I may post something more in depth about the earphones and/or B&O at a later date.

2. Objectified – a DVD about the complex relationship people have with manufactured products. Having known about this film almost since its website appeared on the internet, I leapt at the chance to pre-order it. I have watched it already and it really does provide a unique insight into design and the designers working on products we use everyday, especially the interview or segment with Jonathan Ive from Apple.

3. T-shirts – Having taken part in a competition in the Final Gear forums to design a t-shirt (a competition they hold every 6 months or so), I was lucky enough to have 2 of my designs made in to t-shirts where only 150 or so people worldwide will wear them. A very limited run and I am glad to say that I am very pleased with both of my shirts which I did get for free. One design is based on outlines of different iconic cars, so the Ferrari F2007, Porsche 911 GT3, a Mini and a Ford GT40, the second shirt was a play on a fun feature of an early Top Gear episode where the differences between Oversteer and Understeer were being explained using toy cars.

4. Light Organ – I think I mentioned this in my last post, but this piece of equipment is to help with the radio project on my University course. The purpose of the light organ is to flicker the light or a set of lights to sound or music. This is the basis of my radio design, or it is now, and it should make a very effective looking radio. One thing which I personally am not looking forward to is having to solder all of the components onto the circuit board myself, so I’m glad I bought two, just in case.

Most of the time, I prefer to keep quiet about my sources of knowledge, so they are not exploited amongst the people I know, and the exclusivity I had with it amongst my friends and colleagues is lost, lost in a similar way in which I now feel about my iPhone, great when I got it, because virtually no one else had one, but now every second person has one. This however is one of the times where I am going to share a list of websites which I frequent visit (most of them stuffed in the bookmarks of my Safari web browser) and some of my influences for wanting to go into the design field. Not all of them are design related, but they do offer a wide range of topics (I say wide range, but it is probably quite limited) which will help with design work.

1. Design Sojourn I found this site a few years ago and it provides some of the most comprehensive information available to those who are studying and aspiring to become a designer. Simple and easy to navigate, it has articles on which, I will read again and again, giving confidence and a different insight into what we are told at University about the highs and lows of becoming a designer, and the ideal ways to approach your task.
2. Laws of Simplicity Name of the website says it all I think.
3. Vitra Producer of some of the most iconic pieces of designs from different designers around the world, past and present. I first became aware of this company whilst in my final year at school, where, for the Product Design course we had to do personal research about a certain designer. My designer being Verner Panton. Worth a look just for the designs.
4. Engadget A technology website providing news and reviews about pretty much all things tech. Known about this site for a good number of years, and I used to listen to their podcast. Sometimes, product concepts are shown and new and intriguing materials, technologies and products are posted and can be incredibly useful, such as the mouldable mouse.
5. Red Dot Design Awards Similar to the Vitra site, but not manufacturers, instead an award site which shows some of the best designs of the past year.
6. Art Lebedev Russian company which I accidentally stumbled across a few years ago. Designers and producers of some of the most distinctive and quirky products I have ever seen. Note the Optimus Maximus keyboard which has a small LCD screen on each key, and the Defendius, a door chain in the shape of a maze, which I wasn’t too happy to see, because only a matter of days before it appeared on the website, I was sure I had created a product very similar to it.
7. Bang & Olufsen Danish company, who I absolutely adore, I just go to their website in order to just ogle at their products. Beautiful, just beautiful. You will have seen some of their products before, but just not known who produced it.

Moving onto the actual designers who caused me to purse a career in design is probably just as varied. In part, because most of the ones on the list are car designers but the few which are traditional, (if I can say that) product designers.

1. Ian Callum Probably my favourite designer of all time, he has created some of the most iconic pieces of automotive artworks ever produced, or as a designer at Volvo told me once, rolling sculptures.
2. Alec Issigonis Most famous for designing the original mini, managing to combine great aesthetics with great and innovative layout and manufacture. He is one of the people that many designers aspire to.
3. Jonathan Ive Apple designer, who in part, along with the return of Steve Jobs to the company, helped to turn around their fortunes. World renowned and incredibly popular. I’m also an Apple user so that does sort of sway the favourable bar.

There are 2 other reasons why I wanted to go into design, the first being that I like to draw, quite alot, and the second reason being that I do want to help people, but not in a directly obvious way such as a doctor. I like to keep behind the scenes and let my work do the talking.

I have a lot of electronics to trade.  My hearing is going, too, so my Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 9000 is not doing me any good.  I have a newish laptop that might interest you, an Xbox, some china, a deep freezer, various lawn ornaments…lots of stuff.  What kind of items do you usually look for when doing something like this?

No one on the back, eh?  This could be a tough go then.  The reason I’m having you take the sectional is because my unemployed 27-year old son’s dead ass has been pretty much glued to it for 18 months while playing WOW and drinking all of my beer.  I’m figuring he wouldn’t even get up if you moved it out of the house.  Maybe if you put a sixer of PBR in the passenger seat, that could lure him into the cab.

You would then need to drop everything off at his mom’s place (52 *** Circle in Saco).

I have a hard time dialing phones because of the arthritis so email is better.  I have a pretty sweet voice recognition system.  Looking to get a curse words upgrade soon.  Funk yeah!  See it won’t even get the f word for me.  Derek recognizes them, though.  Funking waste of space.

Bang & Olufsen ritorna con un prodotto davvero particolare nel design, con linee raffinate e futuristiche, come ci ha abituati ormai da tempo la Società Danese.  Di primo acchito sembra un flauto 2.0, in realtà questo BeoTime è un alarm clock ossia una sveglia come non se n’erano mai viste.

Bang & Olufsen BeoTime ovviamente non si limita a suonare all’ora X destandovi da dolci sogni ma funge anche da controller completo per l’equipaggiamento (eventuale) B&O Audio e Video della casa. Attrezzatura di estrema qualità vero, ma anche di lusso sfrenato con prezzi esorbitanti.

Bang & Olufsen BeoTime è dotato di tre piccoli display che mostrano rispettivamente ora, ora della sveglia e la sorgente utilizzata per svegliarvi ossia ad esempio lo stereo, il sistema surround e così via. Y es que está de moda la berlina con carrocería de coupé. Es una tendencia que viene pisando fuerte por su estética impactante y deportiva, y que, bajo mi punto de vista, está diseñada a conciencia, logrando una apariencia inmejorable. Primero fue el Mercedes-Benz CLS, y más tarde el Volkswagen Passat CC. El Grupo VAG tiene interés en reforzar la gama de productos con esta línea, así que ahora es el turno de sacar al mercado el Audi A5 Sportback. Con unas líneas muy marcadas, como las del A5 Coupé, pero con una carrocería de 5 puertas, el A5 Sportback puede ser un rival inquietante para CLS y Passat CC.

En un principio, el A5 Sportback podrá montar 6 motorizaciones diferentes. Los diesel, podrán propulsarse con los motores TDI 2.0, 2.7 y 3.0, desde 170 a 240 cv. de potencia. En gasolina podrá optarse por el 2.0 TFSI (180 ó 211 cv.) o el 3.2 V6 (265 cv.). El año que viene se incorporarán tres motorizaciones nuevas a la gama del A5 Sportback.

El escalón de acceso al diesel es el 2.0 TDI, que tendrá un precio de 37.820 euros. El 3.0 TDI sube hasta los 49.970 euros.

Nadie ha dicho que sea un coche barato, pero es un vehículo digno de admirar por sus líneas, y que seguro que será un rival difícil de superar para modelos de la propia marca, como por ejemplo el Audi A4. No me hubiera imaginado que Bang & Olufsen ofrecerían un despertador hasta que he visto el BeoTime, el último dispositivo presentado por este fabricante que, como el resto de sus productos, destaca por un diseño que se sale de lo común y, evidentemente, por un precio poco habitual para un despertador.

Pero por otro lado tiene toda la lógica, teniendo en cuenta que se integra con el resto de sistemas de audio y vídeo que ofrecen, permitiéndonos despertarnos no solo con la alarma integrada, sino también con música, encendiendo la televisión o escuchando la radio.

Además, incluye una función Sleep, para apagar los sistemas a los que está conectado tras un tiempo especificado, y permite controlar funciones del televisor o de las luces de la habitación. Todo ello se controla desde el botón cuadrado que está junto a las tres pantallas independientes, las cuales muestran la hora actual, la hora de la alarma y el dispositivo que se accionará con esta.

Para no alejarse tanto de un despertador convencional, el BeoTime tiene un botón en un extremo que sale cuando se activa la alarma y con el que podemos apagarla. Podemos colocarlo sobre la mesita de noche o bien en la pared, ya que incluye un soporte magnético para ello, además de sensores para girar automáticamente las pantallas.

El BeoTime funciona con tres pilas de tipo AA y tiene un precio de 311 euros.

Excessive or exaggerated.” The third entry should read “The BeoVision 4.” The television from Bang & Olufsen presents these credentials: it spans 103 inches; the screen alone weighs 580 pounds, the floor-standing base adds another 600; when the BeoVision 4 isn’t being viewed the screen lowers itself to the floor via dual gas shocks and actuators, hiding the center speaker; sixteen years of research have gone into it; oh, and it costs $112,000.

This is one of the craziest pieces of technology I have ever seen. Bang & Olufsen, the speaker brand for Audi, has always proven to create originality out of the most common objects such as speakers, televisions and telephones. But imagine having a 103 inch television in your living room and surround sound Bang & Olufsen speakers, that would be the craziest thing in the world. Imagine using those speakers for a party… I wish I was a billionaire. Don’t worry about that part, it’s going to happen one day… as Big Sean says “Dreams of being rich”

Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound 9000 is incredible. It can hang vertically or horizontally on the wall, or connect to a stand. When a CD is done playing, it returns to its original position allowing them to always face upright when resting. The switch between two CDs is lightening fast, but the speed can be a bit distracting. It can go from the top CD to the bottom in about a second, which is cool, but a bit ridiculous when I watched it at the B&O store in Palo Alto. Additionally, the BeoSound 9000 is in a permanent installation at the MOMA museum in NY. It even has FM radio and the option to stream online radio.
