Will man überhaupt dagegen vorgehen.

A draft blueprint of Australia’s emissions trading scheme will include fuel, but is unlikely to recommend what the country’s key emissions cap should be. The blueprint’s government-backed architect, economist Ross Garnaut, is due July 4 to release a plan for how emissions trading could operate, likely suggesting that government force companies to bid for emissions permits at auction, a perceived failing of the EU scheme. But inflating already record-high petrol prices could fuel a backlash against the government’s pledge to cut emissions with a trading system by 2010. (Reuters)

Bangladesh

Obtaining food remains the biggest priority for Bangladeshi families living in areas still devastated by Cyclone Sidr last year, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said July 1, announcing it will continue its aid operations to the affected region. The next major harvest in the delta country is not due until November or December, and many households lack sufficient food reserves to last until then, according to a press release issued by WFP. (UN News Service)

Burma (Myanmar)

At least 7,000 cyclone survivors sheltering in three temporary camps in Laputta town, in the Irrawaddy delta, are under renewed pressure from the local authorities to return home, according to sources there. About 10,000 refugees are still living in Laputta’s five refugee camps, supported by local authorities and nongovernmental organizations. The 7,000 now urged to return to their home villages have been warned that unless they leave the camps they can expect no aid next month, said one local source. (ReliefWeb)

China

The UN expects China to be at the forefront of efforts to tackle the world’s biggest challenges, such as the global food crisis, climate change and the quest to slash poverty, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said July 1, calling on the Asian nation to step up its contribution in international affairs. Addressing students at the Foreign Affairs University in Beijing, at the start of the second leg of his East Asian tour, Ban said China is already playing an important role as a permanent member of the Security Council and as a growing contributor to peacekeeping and the UN budget. (UN News Service)

India

The Jammu and Kashmir state government should protect Parvez Imroz, an award-winning human rights lawyer who survived an armed attack on June 30 in Srinagar by alleged security forces members, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said July 1. The state government and Human Rights Commission should launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the attack and take criminal action against those responsible. “All members of the security forces found responsible, no matter how far up the chain of command, should be prosecuted,” said Meenakshi Ganguly, senior South Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. (HRW)

Indonesia

Indonesia’s anti-terrorism police unit has found assembled bombs and detained suspects during a raid on a house in Palembang in South Sumatra province, the national police spokesman said on June 2. The detentions came as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was visiting the area in the west of Indonesia on Sumatra Island. Earlier, Metro Television reported that seven suspects had been detained, but a police source involved in the raids told Reuters that more than seven were being held. (Reuters)

Mongolia

The president of Mongolia has declared a four-day state of emergency in the capital amid violent protests over claims the general election was rigged. Crowds torched the HQ of Mongolia’s governing party – the former Communists – and attacked a police station. Over 60 people were hurt – around half of them police – as officers used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon against stone-throwing protesters. The unrest went on into the night, with reports of bank robberies and looting. Rioters set fire to the Cultural Palace, home to a theater, museum and national art gallery in the capital, Ulan Bator. (BBC)

Nepal

Nepalese police have detained more than 40 Tibetan monks and nuns near the country’s border with Tibet. The group was planning to protest at China’s policies in their homeland. The demonstrators were halted several kilometers from the frontier after marching through the mountains from the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. Tibetan exiles in Nepal have protested almost daily since China suppressed violent anti-government demonstrations in Tibet that broke out in March. (BBC)

North Korea (DPRK)

A new agreement between the UN World Food Program (WFP) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) paves the way for the agency to step up its food assistance to more than five million hungry people in the country. The agreement, which was signed on June 27, was hailed by WFP as a significant breakthrough in its long-standing efforts to ensure that all those in need of food aid in the DPRK are able to receive it. (UN News Service)

Japan

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Japanese leaders in Tokyo on June 30 and praised the “immense contribution” Japan has made to the work of the United Nations. Speaking to the press after meeting Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, Ban said that “Japan should be proud of being ‘a peace-fostering nation’ and its commitment to multilateralism,” Ban added. “The Japanese people should know how much Japan’s global role is appreciated in the United Nations and worldwide.” (UN News Service)

North Korea (DPRK)

The UN World Food Program, which has warned of a humanitarian crisis in North Korea due to a food shortage, said on June 30 it reached a deal with Pyongyang to rapidly expand aid, and that a US ship carrying wheat had arrived. Flooding last year, higher commodity prices and political wrangling with major donor South Korea have pushed North Korea to a food shortfall similar to ones it faced about a decade ago when famine killed an estimated 1 million people. The WFP said the agreement it reached with the North will allow it to expand its operation, previously aimed at feeding 1.2 million people, to feed more than 5 million in the country of about 23 million. (Financial Times, UK)

Sri Lanka

For thousands of Sri Lankans without easy access to potable water, a low-tech filter has provided them with a convenient source of safe water, saving on fuel costs and cutting disease. The water filter was first mass-produced in Nicaragua and used in emergency relief operations. It is essentially a clay pot fortified with ground paddy husk and coated with colloidal silver that strains out virtually all harmful bacteria and parasites. The American Red Cross (ARC) began production of the clay filter in Sri Lanka in January 2007 and has distributed some 10,000 units so far. (IRIN)

On a very emotional night, Bob Gainey and his lovely kids watched as his old number 23 was raised to the rafters. Then, right after that, Bob’s team sucked fumes.

Why is that? Why couldn’t Montreal, in a big-time playoff race, on a night honouring their boss who is liked and respected by all, come out flying on all cylinders and trounce a supposedly inferior team such as the Columbus Blue Jackets? Instead, they play uninspired, lacklustre hockey at a time when they should be playing full-speed ahead, fire wagon hockey and grabbing those all-important two points.

Bullshit.

Now they’ve lost to Pittsburgh and shut out 3-0 by Columbus. They’re letting in too many goals a game, and in a playoff run, you’re suppose to tighten up in this area. It’s a real concern.

Next up is the visiting Atlanta Thrashers, a team who strikes fear into no one. Which Montreal team will show up for this one?

If the team comes up flat again, I think I’ll take up cricket. And if you want to join me, I looked up the top five cricket teams in the world. They are: Sri Lanka with 35 points. England with 30, West Indies – 20, India – 13, and Bangladesh with 12.

Not sure who my favourite team will be. Sri Lanka seems to be having a fine year, but England is close behind. Not sure who I’ll choose. Maybe I’ll go with the nicest uniforms, but then again, aren’t they all white?

Canonical has released the stable version of Bazaar – A Distributed Software Version control s

Canonical has released the stable version of Bazaar – A Distributed Software Version control system for distributed teams of innovative and open source, modern sommunity based software development.
Bazaar 1.0 has been written in Python software language – a software language that is much in demand and commands a lot of respect in the Open Software community – which sadly is lacking in India – presently – even though Indian software majors have garnered immense amounts of profits but for strategic reasons are not very happy to promote the spread of free and open source software among Indian schools, colleges, and universities due to fear of disturbing their monopolies and business models.
Among the features of BAZAAR are :
1. Software developers who are familiar with ECLIPSE Software development platform, can begin to be very productive as they can learn and use BAZAAR easily and in short learning curve.
2. It is based on stable Python API and is compatible with Python versions 2.4 and above. It already has a set of about 20 Plugins, available for immediate use by communities of software developers.
3. No need for coordination with central code base as Commits can be made independently.
4. Features and fixes can be developed in independent branches and merged into main development trunk at any time. This feature is ideal for teaching distributed software development to students in remote locations of India.
5. Software development can be done in creative models, whether as creative and intelligent individual developers, who contribute more code than others, or as cooperating software teams.
6. Dual level of support is available for the GNU GPL licensed Bazaar as users can buy commercial support, or if their software developers and teams are really world class, they can use freely available and generous shared community support.

Canonical has released the stable version of Bazaar – A Distributed Software Version control s

Canonical has released the stable version of Bazaar – A Distributed Software Version control system for distributed teams of innovative and open source, modern community based software development.
Bazaar 1.0 has been written in Python software language – a software language that is much in demand and commands a lot of respect in the Open Software community – which sadly is lacking in India presently even though Indian software majors have garnered immense amounts of profits but for strategic reasons are not very happy to promote the spread of free and open source software among Indian schools, colleges and universities due to fear of disturbing their monopolies and business models.

Now that more and more intelligent Indian school, college, university students are beginning to hear and learn about Ubuntu and Kubuntu laptops / desktops from their school friends, who are more enterprising, than even some of the professors of computer training academies in India or some of the more well known branded computer resellers – the time for the Indian summer of Ubuntu will surely be in 2008.

So if you are thinking of buying a latest and modern 2008 New Year computer, with the latest and one of the best operating system softwares, and giving a gift of – gyan, vigyan, shiksha – please do try to not let your own ignorance or the marketing speak of big computer vendors come in between your children and their Ubuntu PC. Just buy an assembled computer from a local computer dealer with the best hardware specifications, download your free copy of Ubuntu or Kubuntu, burn it on a CD and get cracking. Great computing in 2008 in Indian schools and colleges !!

Some government purchasing departments and school purchasing committees will surely have big dharam sankat because they cannot get commissions on the purchase of proprietary, closed source, computer softwares / OS – so maybe they will be busy trying to debunk Ubuntu, without even letting the students try it out for themselves and decide on their own.

But those who are surely interested in gyan, vigyan, vidya – just go to Ubuntu website and download your own FREE and LEGAL copy of the latest and best operating system to hit Indian computer markets in ages. Download Ubuntu. Burn a 700 MB CD. Install on your hard disk. Very very sweet !!

Now that the Christmas and New Year shopping season is fast coming on and box retailers are making a

Now that the Christmas and New Year shopping season is fast coming on and box retailers are making a grab for Indian upmarket customer pockets, many Indian papa and moms who live in Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Mumbai are wondering what Christmas gift to buy for their school and college going children.

For some, it is a choice between splurging on a high priced branded computer, with a pre loaded and proprietary operating system from a desi manufacturer like Wipro, Zenith, HCL, or one of the multinationals like Acer, Compaq, Dell, Lenovo. They have been closely watching the Koi Mil Gaya lad showing his super smooth whizzkid antics with an Acer computer when he gets time off from advertising tobacco company ads. But this Greek god like lad does not reveal whether Ubuntu is loaded on the Acer notebook computer, for executive people, short of quality time for their children but having lots of money.

For the school students it is a differnet story. Maybe they are watching if they can run favorite games on a Ubuntu laptop or desktop and if latest Ubuntu version 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon is really as good as some of their more enterprising school mates tell them.

But for some parents, it is going to be an ocassion for spending quality time with the children. School vacations are about to begin and the IT savvy pops and moms, with their mega millions, are thinking that maybe this December they will find some time, to sit down with th children to play some computer games on the Firefox browser. So which Indian computer manufacturers have got their act together and are offering good Ubuntu computers with OS CD ? It seems not many. Most are preferring to give unsuspecting and illiterate customers preloaded copies of proprietary, closed source software rather than a free CD of Ubuntu Linux that people can install themselves.

And of course, not many Indian parents have even heard of Ubuntu Linux or themselves experimented with it. So maybe they will just go out and buy manufactured PC’s for their kids – without Ubuntu.

But the assembled market is beginning to gear up and is offering the more discerning parents, a choice of pre installed Ubuntu / Kubuntu alongwith a free copy of legal Ubuntu operating system software, with loads of latest, modern, office collaboration, and educational software programs, for inquisitive school children and college kids, licensed under GNU GPL and therefore, available for FREE with no risk of piracy.

So when these discerning parents will tie up with good computer hardware assemblers, who are well educated in installing Ubuntu they will be able to really give a gift of a lifetime to their children. And then maybe the pop and the mom will also begin to hesitantly start asking their smart, intelligent children to teach them a little of Ubuntu Linux. And quality time ? Yes, here come the parents and the children, all together, learning to get serious with learning Linux skills.

About time the branded hardware box sellers got a run for their money, rather than locking unsuspecting people into closed source softwares.
