First of all, thanks so much for always hosting a great party. We think you are the best banya deal in town and we totally appreciate the long tables reserved for us, the sweet little group discounts and the fresh towels always stocked! Is there a keener way to celebrate with a pile of friends than a leisurely sauna and soak, a recline on the balcony (skin steaming in the chilled air), an awesome snack? And then do it all over again!

To make the most of this experience, it’s mandatory to observe the regulars. They come prepared with snacks, beverages, flip flops, hair masks, etc. The spa-goers claim a spot, set up shop and spend a day lounging. In and out of hot rooms and pools, snapping each other with leafy branches (platza). They read and play cards, eat a few meals with plenty of fine drinks, beer and vodka among the favorites.

Though guests may bring their own, it is the amazing quality of the food in the banya’s restaurant that is such a fantastic surprise. With well-priced house specialties like smoked salmon, borscht, pickled vegetables (including chayote and lettuce), whole prawns, and garlicy potatoes, we are transformed from a group of temporarily de-stressed and exfoliated New Yorkers into a hearty, red-nosed, robe-clad clan of Eastern blockers. The menu is extensive, everyone eats, and it doesn’t take long to get used to the idea of dining in a tiled room alongside a pool in a bathing suit. In fact, relaxed comfort might make the food taste that much better.

Though it is not fancy, everything is served with great pride and flourish. Food shaped into flowers (Sandoony is the only place this is acceptable), served with extra lemon, bright herbs, two kinds of bread and heaps of butter. The fish is perfectly cured and the soups restorative, each plate a meal in itself. Even an order of tea is accompanied by lemon, honey, sugar, milk and these fabulously sweet sour cherries. It is honest, well-done and downright delicious. No one bats an eye when a bunch of girls eat cupcakes and sip vodka. They just want to know whose birthday it is…

BanYa – Winter

El diario El País ha publicado un artículo que me ha sorprendido mucho, y gratamente. En el suplemento de viajes recomendaban, entre otros destinos, Albania, Bulgaria y Bielorrusia. Me he alegrado de que, poco a poco, la otra Europa vaya normalizándose en los medios de comunicación españoles. Así que he decidido publicar una entrada para reivindicar que sí, que Bielorrusia es bonita y tiene mucho que ofrecer. Hoy no voy a hablar de Lukashenko ni de los efectos de Chernóbil. Simplemente va a ser un pequeño viaje entre girasoles y casas de colores. Esto también es Bielorrusia.

Recuperar el pasado

Poco quedó en pie tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial ya que el país fue destruido casi por completo. Los horrores del nazismo y la posterior reconstrucción soviética cambiaron su arquitectura de casa bajas y calles empedradas. Años después se han recuperado algunos de esos edificios siguiendo su estilo original, lo que ayuda a imaginarse cómo eran las ciudades bielorrusas antes de ser arrasadas por la guerra.

Los girasoles

Mi flor favorita. Ver una plantación amarilla de girasoles es algo impresionante. Sólo hay que recordar esa maravillosa película que es “Todo está iluminado” (Everything is illuminated) y la escena de la pequeña casa ucraniana en medio de un gran campo de girasoles. En Bielorrusia hay menos y se encuentran sobre todo al sur, pero en los tres países rusófilos es una planta y una flor muy importante y, al igual que en España, aman comer pipas en cualquier ocasión.

Aquí os dejo el link del trailer de “Todo está iluminado” que, como sabéis, he visto tantas veces. La película trata de la importancia del pasado y la memoria, y hace un recorrido genial, divertido y muy triste a la vez, por muchos elementos de la cultura y de la historia de Ucrania (aunque podría valer para otros países de Europa del Este también). Y hay muchos girasoles.

La vida en verde

Lo he comentado en varias ocasiones: la naturaleza bielorrusa deja sin palabras. En cuanto llega la primavera todo se vuelve de un verde absoluto: con bosques sin fin adonde la gente acude a menudo para descansar y parques en plena ciudad repletos de atracciones para los niños y terrazas para comer shashlik. En palabras del gran Lorca: “verde que te quiero verde…”

Los colores de las dacha

Las casas típicas de Rusia, Ucrania y Bielorrusia son tan bonitas, pintadas de colores, con cortinas de encaje y un pequeño jardín con su huerto… Mucha gente tiene una a las afueras de las ciudades o en pequeños pueblos para desconectar de la rutina diaria. Algunos las han construido ellos mismos, poco a poco en su tiempo libre. Suelen ser casitas humildes y sin ningún lujo (aunque a veces cuentan con una sauna o banya, también pasión nacional) y en pocos momentos un bielorruso es tan feliz como en su dacha organizando una barbacoa.

En Bielorrusia se profesa el cristianismo: el ortodoxo es el mayoritario y el católico una minoría, aunque con algo de relevancia en varias regiones del país. Así que podemos encontrar iglesias de los dos tipos y a veces ambas conviven en la misma plaza. Quizás no son tan espectaculares como en Rusia pero tienen su encanto: más pequeñas, cuidadas por la gente del pueblo, algunas en restauración y otras abandonadas a su suerte.

El agua es fundamental en la cultura bielorrusa por sus miles de ríos y lagos. Pescar o darse un chapuzón un domingo cualquiera es algo habitual en cuanto aparecen los primeros rayos de sol tras el largo invierno.

The Russian & Turkish Baths, 268 E 10th St

It costs $30 to spend the day at the Russian and Turkish Baths on East 10^th Street…. Of course, it’s another $35 to be hit with sticks and twigs.

Opened in 1892, the bathhouse was taken over in 1985 by the Shapiro family, a collection of immigrants from then-Soviet Uzbekistan, Siberia and Ukraine. The business was passed down from papa David to his son Dmitry, who now co-manages the baths with his brother Jack.

Dmitry, jovial and drinking a bottle of water, jokes, “At 12, I wasn’t thinking, ‘I want a Russian Bath.’ ” But working there full-time after law-school, he realized that the baths were just simply more fun than being a lawyer. “You can steam… have a beer, have some borscht… It’s supposed to be fun.”

The bathhouse has five different types of steam rooms: Russian, Turkish, redwood sauna, aromatherapy and basic steam. There are other crucial amenities like the ice-cold pool, sun deck, licensed masseurs and ‘Anna’s Restaurant;’ a charming, ramshackle collection of chairs and tables at the entrance to the baths serving traditional Russian fare.

The Russian room is the real star of the bathhouse – a steam room specializing in intense dry heat (just under 200 degrees Fahrenheit) about the size of a large Buick. High stadium seating allows the truly insane to soak up more heat higher up, while newbies can stay near the floor to ease into the experience.

The idea of the Russian bath, or banya, is to alternate the dry steaming with dips into an ice-cold pool to stimulate circulation, and to stimulate conversation. “It’s a social setting,” Dmitry says. “We tried to bring over the spirit of the traditional Russian banya.”

Each floor of the bathhouse is full of voices. On the sundeck above the banya, two men in their forties are relaxing from a schvitz, the old-world term for sweating. Clad in bathing suits, Jack and Victor chat about the ‘Wednesday group,’ a set of regulars that go to the bathhouse weekly to drink beer and play backgammon. Victor is bald and muscular. Jack speaks with an Eastern-European accent. Neither feels comfortable giving their last names to a journalist intruding on their turf. Both men have been coming to the bathhouse for nearly 20 years.

Victor and Jack are interrupted by the arrival of Chris Gibson, a lanky 30-something.  Jack leaps up to hug Gibson while other groups on the deck shout hello like old friends. Gibson has been coming to the bathhouse for 16 years, and is also a member of the Wednesday Group. He plops down next to Victor, instantly at home.

“I walked past this place,” Chris says of his first time, “and thought, ‘What the fuck is this place?’” Jack laughs while other tables make good-natured jokes about what took Gibson so long to show up today and tease Victor for talking to a journalist.

Inside, and behind closed doors, ‘trained professionals’ perform the particularly Russian culmination of the banya: the ‘platza treatment.’ For platza, one of the bathhouse’s masseurs hits the client with fragrant branches, twigs, and leaves. The branches are usually birch, but Dmitry’s bathhouse uses oak because it’s more available.

More than simply whipping their customers, the banya’s platza (like everything in the bathhouse) is designed to stimulate blood flow and health. There is technique to it, though Dmitry concedes it is sometimes just “a bunch of Russian guys hitting each other.” It’s a lot of work but it sets the Russian baths apart from other spas. It feels like a warm, fragrant, manly slap across your whole body, and it actually does feel good.

Despite the recession, business has been good. The clientele is made up of a core of regulars plus a constant flow of tourists thanks to write-ups in guidebooks and features on the omnipresent Taxi TVs. But the baths were a community staple long before the attention, Dmitry says. “If you’ve ever lived in the [East Village], you’ve come to this place.”

While clients might be drawn in by the rich smell of Eucalyptus wafting from the door, Lev Solon, the front-desk manager, has found another reason to stay. Holding a visitor’s hands firmly in his, Solon, a 66-year-old Russian-turned-New Yorker, says the banya “makes you feel powerful.” Using the banya at 8 a.m. every morning invigorates and rejuvenates him throughout the day. “Now, I’m not tired, I go out to discotheque!”

- Hogy hívják a sóbányában fellépő humoristát?

Como que me he excedido con ese título bastante largo ¿no? En fin (lo que se hace por conseguir visitas). Hace un rato andaba leyendo un post en “Taringa” que me llamó mucho la atención y es que trataba sobre un montón de curiosidades relacionadas con la Pump It Up (sí, esa máquina de simulación de baile que o bien te hace adelgazar o bien te mata de un infarto con Beemera). Había unas que definitivamente ni al caso, y otras que realmente estaban muy interesantes; como esa que dice que al observar por demasiado tiempo el vídeo de la canción “Will of the Wisp” puedes tener un colapso cerebral (una convulción) por enviar tanta información al cerebro gracias a tantas manifestaciones luminosas (da miedo, ¿no?).

Bien he aquí una pequeña gran recopilación de algunas curiosidades que  más bien (varias de ellas) parecen un montón de leyendas urbanas, tal vez, puestas ahí adrede para causar asombro/miedo entre la gente.

• La traducción literal de Pump It Up al español es: “Zapatillas hacia arriba” ó “Bombéalo hacia arriba”
• ¿Sabías que “Lazenca” es un demonio bíblico? (El título de la canción dice: “Sálvanos Lazenca”)
  
• ¿Sabías que el CPU de una “Pump It Up” es más lenta que la computadora más lenta que se puede utilizar en la actualidad?
• En el vídeo de Beethoven (virus), en la esquina superior izquierda aparecen unos ciudadanos de la época renacentista caminando hacia adelante y hacia atrás, probablemente bailando, y en ese mismo vídeo los músicos de rojo primero tocan violín y después flautas. (Yo nada más vi a los ciudadanos caminando hacia adelante y hacia atrás)
• Entre el segundo 0.57 y el minuto 1.03  de la canción “Virus de Beethoven” se escuchan gritos (algo tétricos) y voces de fondo.
  
• En el Title de Winter de Vivaldi aparece la virgen María
• En el vídeo de la canción María de Banya aparece una paloma, la cual representa al Ave María, pero en varias ocasiones  el vídeo de la canción se hace oscura y la paloma adquiera una tonalidad roja en sus ojos. (Yo nada más vi la paloma, pero nada de ojos rojos)
• ¿Sabías que la canción “Com’back” trata de ovnis por un DJ probablemente extraterrestre? (Esa si estuvo buena, ¿será por eso el título?)
• ¿Sabías que en el vídeo de la canción de “Can Can” aparece el Ángel de la Independencia de México, las pirámides de Tenochtitlan, las pirámides de Egipto, y las ruinas del Partenón en Grecia junto con la desconocida nunca documentada civilización en una isla de Sudamérica?
• ¿Sabías que en cualquier máquina antes de la “Premiere 2″ al salir el mensaje de “Game Over” aparece por menos de 0.5 segundos un misterioso mundo con algún mensaje subliminal?
• El estribillo de SLAM dice: “Video Killed the Radio Star“
• En el minuto 57 del vídeo de Naissence se escucha un discurso en un inglés no muy claro que dice así: “The mind of men wrecked the delicate barrier between reality and the war of life, destroy the place entire… ¡Fuck the world and all the spacies of this country!“, que en español sería algo así como: “La mente del hombre destruye la delicada barrera entre la realidad y la vida de la guerra (¿o séra estilo de guerra?), destruye el lugar entero… ¡A la mierda el mundo y todas las especies de esta ciudad! (Es obvio, las escenas del vídeo son bélicas)
• Se cree que las canciones en donde se encuentran más “mensajes subliminales” son en las que hace “Banya“.
• No sé si diga eso, pero en el minuto 1.21 de la canción “Caprice of Otada” se escucha una voz que dice: “Profesor Jirafales” y en ese momento aparecen unos personajes similares a él.
• ¿Sabías que “Chimera” estuvo basada en la ópera de Mozart llamada “La flauta mágica” que se creía tenía influenzas masónicas?
• ¿Sabías que al principio de la canción “Final Audition 2-x” se escucha el mismo nombre al inicio sólo que en una voz lírica, y que en un poco más de la mitad de la canción se escuchan dos “Ave María”?

Everyone loves a party, and here at the Coney Island Banya it is one of our specialties. We try to have a party once a month or every two months where we invite many people to come and have a good and relaxing time as they enjoy the luxuries of the banya.

We held one of our parties on Valentine’s Day, where we had about 130 attendees. The night was amazing! It was a great opportunity for everyone to meet new people, have a fun-filled night and great entertainment. The party was hotter than the saunas. Guests had the chance to soak and sweat in the steam baths, drink free vodka, eat free pierogies, get massages and platza treatments, listen to live orchestrated music and of course dance the night away.  The rooftop was also opened for those who wanted to get some fresh air, have a smoke or just relax on the lounge beds. There was also an exclusive hookah lounge hosted by HookahMike.

Everyone that attended was pleased, had a wonderful time and expressed their interest in attending future events. We are excited to announce that after a year of renovation we have now re-opened the favorite Banya complex on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue C.  The place is fully-renovated and it is ready and happy to receive patrons from all over the city to enjoy a time of relaxation. Este día posteare una canción que  no todos han oído -a menos que seas pumper o que te guste la música clásica-.  Me centraré en una de mis canciones favoritas de la Pump It Up. Una canción basada en la inspiradora y apacible melodía de Johan Pachelbel al más puro estilo característico de Banya (un grupo musical coreano encargado de crear canciones originales para la Pump It Up).

El título de la canción -como ya pudieron leer arriba- es “Canon D“. Es una melodía basada en la composición ”Canon y Giga en re mayor para tres violines y bajo continuo” de Johan Pachelbel.

Canon D apareció por primera vez en la versión Exceed 2 (2005) de la Pump It Up.
