This week we salute a woman who has fearlessly been standing up for a more environmentally responsible food system for over 40 years. Frances Moore Lappé is best known for her book, Diet of a Small Planet, a guide to eating in an environmental conscious way that is still relevant today. Since its publication in 1971, Lappé has dedicated her life to spreading the word about the dangers of an industrialized food system. She founded Food First: Institute for Food and Development Policy that boldly focuses on advocating for a food system capable of addressing world hunger through environmentally sustainable means. She openly speaks out about why genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food should play no role in this system. She further shares her expertise and passion on issues, like GMOs in food, as a member of the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture. If you want to see this bad ass in action, she will be speaking in NYC on September 22 about her newest book, EcoMind: Changing the Way We Think, to Create the World We Want. In the meantime, we salute Frances Moore Lappé as this week’s BAO Bad Ass Legend.
