CNN wanted veteran newscaster out so badly, they gave him an $8 million settlement package, reports The New York Post.

“They wanted him out,” revealed a source. Dobbs shocked fans by announcing he was quitting his show ‘Lou Dobbs Tonight‘ last Wednesday. Another source claimed he had 18 months left on a $12 million contract.

Tension had been building between Dobbs and CNN executive producer Jonathan Klein over the subject matter reported during Dobbs’s show – that President Barack Obama was not born in Hawaii and therefore not an American citizen as well as illegal immigration. “What they do is their business,” Dobbs stated yesterday regarding CNN. “I tried to accommodate them as best I could, but I’ve said for many years now that neutrality is not part of my being.”

Klein held a strong belief that Dobbs’ increasingly opinionated reporting ran counter to CNN’s stated goal of becoming a fact-based, opinion-free network nestled between the right-leaning FOX News and left-leaning MSNBC.

However, the extent to which CNN was willing to pay Dobbs such a significant severance had been hidden. This stands in significant contrast to the way Dobbs expressed the professional dissolution of his 27-year association with CNN which he characterized as “pleasant, friendly and professional” to the Atlanta Constitution-Journal.

The $8 million package has given Dobbs a sense of freedom. “I truly believe that it’s also a liberating moment for me,” claimed Dobbs, who is in no rush to work on another network. Dobbs said that it would be “weeks, probably months” before he decides what to do next.

Speculation that Dobbs may become a candidate for the Senate seat in New Jersey in 2012 rings false to insiders. “He couldn’t stand the scrutiny,” mentioned a colleague.

Monsters of disaster are special kinds of divine warning. They are harbingers of things we do not want to face, of catastrophes, and we fear they will bring such events upon us by coming to us.

Because of these possibilities, women’s blogs aren’t just blogs for women. They’re blogs about issues that affect women — issues as various as reproductive rights, healthcare reform, world affairs, and yes, Battlestar Galactica — for anyone who happens to read about them. Many of these readers are women, but many of them are men, and some of them — both male and female — are bound to be people who haven’t thought much about feminism or women’s issues per se before. Women’s blogs can sometimes be echo chambers, but they can also reach a wide and diverse audience, some of whose minds will surely be opened by the experience.

At which point, had I been Larry King, I’d have said good riddance to that little lump of annoying twaddle that is Carrie Prejean. Normally I try to tackle weightier issues, but just for a minute, I’ll go here. If she had said to him that even the reason for settlement in her case wasn’t up for discussion, which she didn’t do, I think I would almost see a reason for her little girl hissy fit, which is what this is, I have seen grown women defend themselves, and it doesn’t look like this, she’s having what looks like a pre-teen snit.

She just wants face time, which would explain her not leaving the set when she got all huffy there. Spoiled little rich kid, that’s how she comes off.

The botox beauty queen has just about milked this whole “put upon” thing for all the publicity it is worth. Larry was just asking Miss Idiot a simple question, and she couldn’t handle it, which amazes me. What would she have done with the press exposure had she won her stupid miss pretty crown? It would prolly have killed her, she should be happy she lost that pageant, she can’t handle the spotlight.

Maybe she needs to do a second porn viddy or have some more plastic surgery or something. Whiny lil shit.

That was fun, but now it’s onto more weighty issues.

   _______________________________________________________________

An Afghanistan strategy emerges, finally. What I mean by that is that President Obama has made the rather sensible decision to put into any plan that comes out an exit strategy, regardless of the size of the troop increase that will come out after he gets back from his week long trip in Asia. Former ”Commander of the Combined Forces in Afghanistan” and current U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry said that any additional troops in the region would make the Afghan’s more dependent on the U.S. and would not be a wise choice given the amount of corruption in Afghanistan under the Karzai Administration.

That’s what this situation needs. The President listening to voices on the ground that know the situation, like Eikenberry, not republicans, who say the President is dithering, not pundits and other media types who confuse the issue by making their opinions known without the knowledge necessary to even speak on the subject. Judgement based on expert knowledge. And let the Afghan’s pick up some of the slack for their own damned issues.

With the right training and the right mindset, they can handle the Taliban themselves. We have to go hunt Bin Laden, and he’s in Pakistan, so spending long years with the Afghan’s, when the real issue is in Pakistan makes very little sense. Get what we need done to fix the issue, which means fight through this slog, train the Afghan’s to fight and fend for themselves while we both fight Al-Qaeda and get Bin Laden, fix it right this time, and be done with it.

Good on you, Mister President. Take the time you need to get this done right. Don’t speed through and fuck it up, like Bush did with Iraq. Democrats always have been better with foreign policy, and here’s your proof.

    _______________________________________________________________

   That’s it from here. Later!

Today’s nuggets, Via marksquotes: Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition. Thomas Jefferson

Speak seldom, but to important subjects, except such as particularly relate to your constituents, and, in the former case, make yourself perfectly master of the subject. George Washington

The mild voice of reason, pleading the cause of an enlarged and permanent interest, is but too often drowned, before public bodies as well as individuals, by the clamors of an impatient avidity for immediate and immoderate gain. James Madison

Powerful Moment as President Barack Obama Visits The Cape Coast Castle in Ghana, A country in West Africa. The Castle was used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. This pic is powerful because many African Americans left from this place and were brought over to Europe and America in Chains to suffer years of oppression. However, We came back to our homeland as the President of the United States! The Country in which we spent 400 years in slavery. This picture to me shows the power and resilience of my people. It shows me that no matter the situation we will overcome! Simply Powerful! Gives me goosebumps!!

I can’t believe its been a year already. A year ago America won one of it’s most important victories to date as Barack Obama stepped into the leader seat and ushered us into the future. We all will know where we were when it actually happened. I was at work, pissed at my hours that I couldn’t be at home with my family enjoying this moment in history, but I was at the station so I popped a tape in the VTR and recorded the entire thing.

After I got home I threw the tape in the camera and threw the footage on my computer while watching all news stations all night along with editing. The result? Watch and see what I came up with. Shout out to Rashid Hadee on the music…Damn what a song, damn what a day, Damn what a blog?!?! Read this, enjoy this, spread this.[gallery]

Yesterday I wrote about the new FPL PV solar plant in Arcadia, FL, so a few new ideas and comments popped up in my head. Here are choice quotes from the St. Pete Times and what the Herald printed.

Standing in rural Florida amid 180 acres of solar panels, President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced $3.4 billion in federal stimulus grants to modernize America’s power grid and create jobs.

Among the 100 projects receiving stimulus grants: $200 million for an FPL initiative to modernize its power grid, including transmission line improvements and more than 2 million “smart meters” that enable consumers to monitor and adjust their own power use and costs.

“Here in this region of Florida, this project will reduce demand for electricity by up to 20 percent during the hottest summer days that stress the grid and power plants,” Obama said. “It will provide smart meters to 2.6 million more customers. And most importantly, it will create thousands of jobs – good jobs, by the way, that can’t be outsourced; jobs that will last and jobs that pay a decent wage.”

The current grid system relies on century-old technology that the president said “wastes too much energy, it costs us too much money, and it’s too susceptible to outages and blackouts.”

The vast fields of panels are tucked out of sight outside Arcadia, and utility officials said the $152 million facility generates enough power for about 3,000 homes. In reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the solar facility is estimated to be the equivalent of removing 4,500 cars from the roads every year.

Miami Herald

Image via Wikipedia

$3,400,000,000 to revamp a centuries old power grid system is way overdue. But what part of the system is going to be redone? There are several parts and I am assuming all parts are going to get an upgrade but the article only mentions distribution, the part of power transmission that involves your home or office building and the meters. There is also no mention of which smart meter will be used. Is it Google’s PowerMeter, Microsoft’s hohm, Cisco’s Network Building Mediator, or someone else entirely? While Cisco’s is more for a enterprise, they are suppose to have a more consumer friendly solution. From the Energy Smart Miami, here is a video explaining the problems we have and how Cisco want’s to solve it.

I haven’t seen or read anything for distribution but long haul transmission has a few options, so lets explain where we are. Right now we have long distance power transmitted on overhead power lines at high voltages (110 kV or above) because we lose power after a certain amount of distance. Overhead lines are inefficient, require lots of space, can be blown down and generate electro-magnetic fields (EMF). We can make them better but it costs more and most companies just do not see the economic benefit of making long transmission lines more efficient.

Transmission efficiency is improved by increasing the voltage using a step-up transformer, which reduces the current in the conductors, while keeping the power transmitted nearly equal to the power input. The reduced current flowing through the conductor reduces the losses in the conductor and since, according to Joule’s Law, the losses are proportional to the square of the current. Halving the current makes the transmission loss one quarter the original value.

Transmission and distribution losses in the USA were estimated at 7.2% in 1995 [14]

So what can we do to make things better? American Superconductor has come up with what looks like a good solution. While it does cost more, this type of cabling reduces loss, consolidates existing cables, is hidden underground so no more unsightly towers, and pretty much eliminates EMF.

Just one of these is capable of carrying 574 megawatts of power, enough to power 300,000 homes.

That’s all great and all but you’re probably wondering if this is going to affect you. If you’re in Florida you more than likely will be. This is just FPL alone, but several other municipalities and power companies in Florida also got funding from the DoE.

The DoE application has this listed. Note that the project’s total cost is $578,347,232.

Energy Smart Florida is a comprehensive project to advance implementation of the Smart Grid, including installing over 2.6 million smart meters, 9,000 intelligent distribution devices, 45 phasors, and advanced monitoring equipment in over 270 substations. By incorporating intelligence into the transmission, distribution and customer systems, the utility will be able to anticipate and respond to grid disturbances, empower customers through alternative rate programs, and enable the integration of renewable and on-site energy sources.

There are a lot of possibilities to improve the future. These are just some steps we can take and are currently doing with transmission, distribution and smart energy meters.

Obama (CNN) — President Barack Obama said Friday that he was humbled by the decision of the No

Obama

(CNN) — President Barack Obama said Friday that he was humbled by the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award him the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
“I am both surprised and deeply humbled,” Obama said at the White House.

“I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments. But rather as an affirmation of American leadership. … I will accept this award as a call to action.”

Obama said he did not feel he deserves “to be in the company” of past winners, but would continue to push a broad range of international objectives, including nuclear non-proliferation, a reversal of the global economic downturn, and a resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

He acknowledged the ongoing U.S. conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, noting that he is the “commander in chief of a country that is responsible for ending” one war and confronting a dangerous adversary in another.

“This award is not simply about my administration,” he said. It “must be shared” with everyone who strives for “justice and dignity.”
The Nobel Committee said it decided to honor Obama for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The president had not been mentioned as among front-runners for the prize, and the roomful of reporters in Oslo, Norway, gasped when Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel committee, uttered Obama’s name.

The Nobel committee recognized Obama’s efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said.

Jagland said the decision was “unanimous” and came with ease.

He rejected the notion that Obama had been recognized prematurely for his efforts and said the committee wanted to promote the president just as it had Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 in his efforts to open up the Soviet Union.

“His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” it said.

Some analysts have speculated that the prize could give Obama additional clout as he forms a strategy for the war in Afghanistan and attempts to engage Iran and North Korea. Another senior administration official told CNN he hopes the White House can “use it for the positive.”

The domestic political consequences are unclear. Supporters hope the prestige associated with the prize will strengthen the president’s hand in the health care reform debate. A top Republican from George W. Bush’s administration, however, argued that “this will backfire on them for a while” and asserted it was “a gift to the right.”

Obama’s recognition comes less than a year after he became the first African-American to win the White House. He is the fourth U.S. president to win the prestigious prize and the third sitting president to do so.

The award comes at a crucial time for Obama, who has initiated peace missions in key parts of the globe.

Obama’s envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, has returned to the region to advocate for peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton starts a six-day trip to Europe and Russia on Friday. On the trip, the secretary will discuss the next steps on Iran and North Korea, and international efforts to have the two countries end their nuclear programs.

Mohamed ElBaradei, who won the 2005 peace prize for his efforts to prevent nuclear energy being used for military means, said Obama deserved to win for his efforts to bring Iran to the table for direct nuclear talks with the United States.

“I could not think of anybody who is more deserving,” said ElBaradei, the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

As the news of Obama’s win broke online, postings on social network sites Twitter and Facebook expressed surprise. Many started with the word: Wow.

The last sitting U.S. president to win the peace prize was Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The other was Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Jimmy Carter had been out of office for more than two decades when he won in 2002.

This year’s Peace Prize nominees included 172 people — among them three Chinese dissidents, an Afghan activist and a controversial Colombian lawmaker — and 33 organizations, the highest number of nominations ever.

The Nobel recipient receives a prize of about $1.4 million.
