Most things in psychology seem to boil down to childhood, so I think my family would be a good start

Most things in psychology seem to boil down to childhood, so I think my family would be a good starting point in condensing my whole personality into one blog post. I have two older brothers and no sisters so I always had a big male influence in my life. My family is close and so I have always looked up to my brothers and tried to impress them. This is probably the reason for my boyish interests and tastes. I spent my childhood watching X-men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, WWF and Star Wars, and these tastes have carried on throughout life. But that didn’t stop me enjoying the girly side of childhood too. Put a young boy or a young girl in a room full of toys and the majority of them will go towards the ones typical of their gender. There is a reason for those stereotypes. Put me in a toy shop and I went straight for the dolls, but that didn’t stop me playing with my brothers Lego and Action Figures as well. We have pictures of me wearing a frilly pink dress and fairy wings whilst wrestling with my brothers. Doesn’t everyone?

My brothers used to tease me about my girly interest (I think they wanted another brother – they even tried to name me Max). There’s one birthday list I remember which contained the likes of Bring It On, Crossroads, Save The Last Dance and Charlie’s Angels on DVD that received a lot of teasing, but rightly so. And their teasing even resulted in me hiding my love of Take That from them in primary school, although I’ve later discovered that they were hiding their love of them too – hence the teasing. But that was surprisingly rare and I feel very lucky to have them as brothers. I have some very fond memories of them taking me to see Spice World The Movie one summer and helping me put on shows to our parents when I’d spent the day making up a dance. They never discouraged me from acting like a girl, they just wanted their sister to be cool.

So I always had people around who were willing to attempt to teach me how to do kick ups (not that I ever succeeded with more than 3) but no one to teach me how to apply make-up and give me advice on boys. My mum was never really interested in make-up and, to my knowledge, she was more interested in reading and ballet then she was in boys and partying when she was younger. I think that this male influence is not only the reason for me getting on better with guys but has also resulted in my yearning to stay feminine. I spent my younger years looking longingly at the pretty, blonde girls that all the boys fancied, who knew how to wear make-up and knew how to flirt. I wanted to be like that but my attempts at make-up left me looking more like a clown and the boys always fancied my friends over me. Apparently being able to punch as hard as them wasn’t as high up in their girlfriend priorities as you’d have thought. Still isn’t actually.

I’ll leave it there for now. Next Why am I a guy’s girl? post….my schooldays. Sounds rivoting I know.

Life – what a funny ride, really! So today, I had work from 9am-2pm. Standard, nothing special

Life – what a funny ride, really!

So today, I had work from 9am-2pm. Standard, nothing special about that. Straight afterwards, however, I was scheduled to go for a picnic for a friend’s birthday which was to be immediately followed by a nighttime endeavour for another friend’s day of days. Given I’ve also got work tomorrow morning, and not wanting to lug around all my clothes etc, I decided to just take my things for the evening with me at the start of the day.

2pm arrives, I’m in the changeroom – oh good lord! Embarrassment! Have I brought a pair of mismatched shoes? YES! Are they actually for the same foot, so I can’t wear them even if I wanted to? YES! Ah! Fail! Don’t get me wrong, had they been slightly appropriate, this wouldn’t have been an issue, but there was no way i could wear chunky black solid closed-in shoes with a tight and frilly dress. Not happening.

Alas, an emergency pit stop to Wittner, just across the road was required. Thankfully it was pay day today – not that I was intending on this purchase. Just as I stepped outside, however, new soles on the ground, CRASH! BAM! and pouurrrrrrrr….a thunderstorm! Crazy. And so, in brand new shoes, I ended up soaking wet anyway.

Eventually, I trampsed my way to the picnic (not the greatest break-in mind you) where I spent a lovely afternoon celebrating and eating with my posse, if you will.

And then! The day took another turn!

There is debate over whether facebook on one’s mobile is a good thing. Maybe it was a little antisocial, but come 4-5pm ish, I felt a quick check was in order. Well, wasn’t I glad I did?! Because, a congratulatory message had been posted on my wall, because of this:

http://www.mimco.com.au/Blog.aspx?CategoryId1=90&CategoryName1=Blog

Wahoooo!!! Oh man, what excitement! What joy! Brought a big smile to the face

Life is always unpredictable – today, it gave me a few giggles.

Holiday Barbie 2008 is a stunning collectible celebrates 20 years Holiday Barbies. Although excited

Holiday Barbie 2008 is a stunning collectible celebrates 20 years Holiday Barbies. Although excited Holiday Barbie is expected every year, the Barbie doll has a fascinating history, beginning with its "birth" in 1959.

Believe it or not, Barbie was originally a real person. Her name was Barbara (Barbie) Handler and her mother and father were Ruth and Elliot.

In the early 1950s, Barbie's mother as a young Barbie and her friends saw enjoyedPlaying with adult fashion dolls more than they have the baby dolls. Her mother knew that it was important to present to young girls, as it were, to grow up to be.

Since most of the adult dolls were available at that time made of paper or paperboard, ruled Barbie's mother to a three-dimensional adult female doll … make, which was like the life-enough to dream an inspiration and role model for little girls "of what the future would bring. A future filled with fun on the beach, traveling, one day get married and a family.

She took her ideas to the ad executives at Mattel Inc., the company that she founded and Barbie's father in the garage for many years before. The all male committee rejected the idea saying that it would be too expensive to produce and too little market appeal to the masses.

Ruth was not so easily deterred. She had gone on a trip to Europe and with a Lillie doll that had bought them back, "a doll modeled after a character in a GermanComic Strip. She then spent a similar amount of time to design their own doll Lillie and even a designer to make clothes to set realistic clothes. The result was the first Barbie doll.

Mattel finally agreed to back their efforts and Barbie made her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. Girls raved about them, and a new sales record for Mattel was set sold in the first year, with 351,000 Barbie dolls at $ 3.00 per piece.

Marketed as a "Teen-Age Fashion Model", the first Barbie dollswere manufactured in Japan, with their clothes hand-stitched by Japanese homeworkers. The first Barbie was a ponytail and zebra-striped swimsuit, open shoes, glasses and earrings blonde. Even more fun was the fact that Barbie had lots of accessories available. Little girl she loved, despite the buyer at the annual meeting of the industry Toy Fair in New York, seemed unimpressed.

Ruth knew what pleases young girls and Barbie was a breakout hit! That's all it took for the acquisitionRetailers by storm! Mattel was so with the command, it took several years for the supply of fish to flooded with demand!

Since then the Barbie doll's popularity persevered, and today, with over one billion of their look-alikes sold the product line is one of the most successful in the history of the toy industry.

This Christmas, Holiday Barbie 2008 has once again exceeded all expectations. Wearing a beautiful, sparkling silver gown, this sensational collectibleFashion doll exudes a classic beauty.

This only goes to show that Barbie will never stop keeping women down in society. But I guess at least it’s for a good cause:

Wearing the traditional Islamic dress, the iconic doll is going undercover for a charity auction in connection with Sotheby’s for Save The Children.

2. War on Christmas continues with new athvertisement – And though I really shouldn’t have to say this, of course there’s no such thing as the “War on Christmas.” But it’s fun to play along with Fox News’ little conspiratorial delusion. The American Humanist Association is sponsoring a new nation-wide campaign involving ads with the slogan, “No God? …No problem! Be good for goodness’ sake.” This is the latest variation on a common theme. And despite the fact that it doesn’t say anything negative at all about anyone’s religion, I guarantee that it won’t be long before we hear from outraged Christians who feel personally slighted by the ad.

3. Marietta, Georgia considers dropping “so help me God” from police officer oath – Of course there’s some strange controversy over it. Councilman Van Pearlberg apparently just inquired as to whether it had ever been challenged, which somehow led to the option to remove it being considered. Pearlberg, however, claims he never actually objected to it and thinks it should not be removed, while also saying, “I don’t think anybody should be forced to say anything…I just don’t know what the alternative would be.” Keep it as part of the oath or give people the freedom to say what they want? Which is it? They’re mutually exclusive positions. If what you’re saying is that people should not be required to say it but they can should they be so inclined, then why not just obey the Constitution and remove it while leaving open the option for individuals to unofficially include it should they desire to do so?

4. Matt Barber blames everyone for Will Phillips’ decision except Will Phillips - Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel, a Religious Right organization, has publicly come out to respond to 10-year-old Will Phillips’ decision to not stand for the Pledge until gay marriage is legalized. Basically, that response is simply ranting about how all of Barber’s ideological opponents are responsible for brainwashing the kid. He’s apparently a pawn of his evil parents, liberals, atheists, gay activists, Hollywood, etc. To whoever that newscaster was who asked Will Phillips what a gay-wad was, Matt Barber’s your man. Hopefully Jon Stewart can dispatch some pro wrestlers to force an apology. What I want to know is, who is responsible for Matt Barber’s being a flaming moron?

5. Small children prove more knowledgeable about evolution than Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron:

L’ironie inquiète, l’information me foudroie.

Strolling around Front Royal, you can’t help but notice the profusion of hair salons and beauty parl

Strolling around Front Royal, you can’t help but notice the profusion of hair salons and beauty parlors. On a side street near my house you can walk by these buildings in quick succession: Sheriff’s office, gun shop, beauty barn. Every commercial building here sits near a salon.

Do the cops stop in for a hair chop every now and then along with the purchasers of handguns and rifles? Will those weapons someday be used in crimes that land their owners in the clink? Let’s face it, whether we are good guys or bad guys, we all want to look attractive.

Yesterday I saw a woman at Martin’s grocery sporting a classic 1960s country grandma bouffant. It really was impressive—good height, evenly teased and shaped, hair-sprayed into a solid but delicate blonde-gray mass. It reminded me of a wasp’s nest. Her lady’s leisure suit and high-heeled sandals clinched the look. I must admit that I admire that kind of sassy style, even if it is 40 years old—this ma-maw was stepping out with pride.

Senior citizens probably make up a huge portion of salon devotees in Front Royal. But there also seem to be a lot of customers at the other end of the age spectrum, too many perhaps. What is it about small towns that keeps so many cosmetologists busy?

I first noticed this phenomenon at the Festival of Leaves parade, where fire trucks, pickups, and convertibles were decorated with more beauty queens than any one town should be able to produce.

Even though I could never condone the crowning of any beauty queen, from Miss Universe on down, I’m willing to accept the usual one or two per small town civic event. Certainly, Winchester would implode without its Miss Apple Blossom Festival.

I tend to combat the unwanted influence of adult beauty queens on my psyche by meditating on images of Carrie at the high school prom. Or I read my husband’s poem about Barbie, which I quote here in its entirety:

          I am Barbie.
          I live in your dollhouse.
You change my clothes every day.

          If I could get out
          of here I would
          kill you all.

I believe that inside every beauty queen, every Miss Universe, a homicidal Barbie bides her time, waiting to make herself known and take her revenge for all the reductions to which she is subjected daily.

Fighting these reductions (person reduced to object, complex sentient being reduced to a pretty shell), becomes more complicated when the beauty queens are not adults but teens, kids, or even babies.

Though this year’s oddly quiet Festival of Leaves parade needed something—more marching bands and floats, maybe some bagpipes, trick motorcyclists, or Shriners in their funny little cars—what it didn’t lack were beauty queens: big ones, small ones, and really small ones.

As one friend put it, “It’s like they multiply and divide every year. First it was Little Miss Whatever—now it’s little Little Little Miss and Little Little Little Miss.”

Seeing grown-up women graft their beauty obsessions and insecurities onto young girls makes me almost physically ill. I watched those girls in the parade with their curls, in their crowns and frilly dresses, make-up applied artfully to their young skin. What were they trying to be? What did their mothers want them to be? Some kind of living fairy tale, a strange kind of lie.

For some reason, this kind of pimped up kid makes me think of that wonderful horror movie from 1960, Village of the Damned, in which evil-eyed, outwardly perfect, tow-headed children attempt to take over the world. They are truly creepy.

I can almost hear the beauty pageant mothers shouting back at me.

“Lighten up!” they say. “What’s wrong with being pretty?”

Nothing, of course, as long as being pretty is not the goal, or even a goal. Physical beauty is a mirage manufactured for us by culture and commercialism. I’m not immune to it and neither is my six year old daughter. Sometimes I succumb (hair dye) and sometimes I fight it. But I never forget it.

How can I? In America, the emphasis on looks pervades everything. Just when you think you’ve been clever enough to lead your child away from socially proscribed standards of beauty, she comes out with this statement:

“Mommy, I want don’t want to be brown. I want to be white. I want blue eyes and blonde hair.”

Is there no escaping the Aryan ideal? Does my child have to feel inferior because she is brown haired, brown eyed, and not lily white?

In some ways I think she is lucky because she will never come close to the Barbie stereotype. She has to find a more legitimate source of personal power. And if we tell her over and over again that she is beautiful because of who she is and not what she looks like, and that all colors of skin are beautiful, I know it will sink in—eventually.

But it can be a fine line to walk between celebrating femininity and not placing too much emphasis on the physical. One friend has undergone two rounds of liposuction and plastic surgery in her quest to be “hot.” I’m of two minds about this—she has worked hard to lose weight, tone her muscles, and be healthy. She is confident and happy. That’s all good.

But she’s also spent a lot of time and money on surgery and personal trainers—this has been a major focus of her existence and is critical to her role as a wife. When I hear that there’s a new beauty pageant solely for women who have undergone plastic surgery, I think about this family member and wonder how far she will go to try to reach some ad executive’s idea of perfection. I don’t begrudge her her beauty but I’d like to see her focus on it less.

I try not to get too wrapped up in how I look—what clothes I wear, what make-up I have on, how heavy I am—but I’d be lying if I said I never thought about it. I don’t usually wear make-up but sometimes, for a night out on the town, it’s fun to put on. My daughter loves to play dress-up and to shop for clothes. We don’t shop often—who can afford it?—but I can see she cares deeply about what she wears. I’ll have to carefully steer her away from equating clothes and fashion with self-esteem.

Like the funky, stylin granny at Martins, I want my daughter to feel confident but without placing too much value on looks. There’s a big difference between the two.

In 2004, Dove began something it calls the “Campaign for Real Beauty.” This marketing strategy is ingenious because it addresses image head on, defusing any criticism of Dove as a perpetuator of beauty stereotypes. Dove has positioned its products as tools to improve confidence and self-esteem outside narrow definitions of what constitutes pretty.

The campaign is impressive. It makes a point to use images of real women and girls of all colors, shapes, and sizes. It also claims that the images are not altered. They’ve developed workshops and guides for girls and parents on how to develop self-esteem that is not dependent on outward appearance.

But it’s crazy that we need such guides in the first place. Someday I’d like to see all the small town beauty queens throw away their crowns and the mothers of pageant babies give the finger to pageant promoters. Wouldn’t that rock?

Recently, my daughter picked out a brown Barbie at the toy store of her own accord. Jose and I were astounded. Granted, it’s still Barbie, with her insane waist, torpedo breasts, and stiletto-ready feet but at least Maggie didn’t gravitate immediately toward the Nordic-looking doll, like she usually does. Her world is starting to expand.

Jose and I can’t let up though. It’s our job to keep reminding her that every ad she sees has been airbrushed, touched up, and rendered false, that TV and movies construct a beauty ideal that has absolutely nothing to do with reality. Together, I hope she and I can learn to create our own authentic beauty from the inside out with less than perfect hands.

You’re eyes were closed, teeth biting your lips and feet curled up. Everyone remembers their best. S

You’re eyes were closed, teeth biting your lips and feet curled up. Everyone remembers their best. Sometimes your best is your first, it can also be your worst and sometimes the only words to describe it would be interesting or different.

Almost on the other side of the equator, I can’t stop thinking about my best. Like Amy Winehouse and crystal meth, I can’t keep my mind away from it.

From what I was wearing, how it all started and the feeling of doing it in public, the memories run wild in my head more so than barely pubescent girls for pastey, hygiene-challenged and homeless-looking Rob Pattinson.

I’m even daydreaming about it. But what can one do? You can’t force the next time and you definitely can’t guarantee it’s going to be equally as good.

Obviously, I’m talking about my first … food coma.

But seriously, no matter what the event, relationship or experience was; the best memory is always hard to get over.

As a society was are obsessed with leaving an impression, leaving a legacy – having some momentous occasion that sticks to us like Peter Helliar does Rove McManus (how annoying).

Our Prime Minister is a prime example. K Rudd will go down as the “Sorry” PM – selfless and caring, he has been willing to apologise on behalf of his and previous governments for the treatment of the Stolen Generation and forgotten Australians

But as important as symbolism is and even though it may be a defining moment, you need to realise it and get over it. There’s more to be done instead of globetrotting, grovelling and getting your name in the good books of other world leaders.

I digress.

Whether it’s a one hit wonder until you finally realise you’re not a Barbie girl in a Barbie world, or if your 15 minutes are up and your child walks out of the garage as your home-made space ship falls down – exciting moments in life are hard to come by and even harder to forget (almost as hard as finding attractive people at this resort).

Until the next adrenalin-pumping heart-racing event takes place, we’re left in a limbo world of ‘remember when’.

It’s a bit like a double-edged sword (or sex toy) – power/pleasure on one hand and pain at the other. Memorable events in life are great at the time, but can keep you distracted and looking into the past. Nicole Kidman’s face is suffering this exact condition…

Take… I don’t know… sex for example. When it comes to sex in the 21st century, I’d like to quote my friend Albert Einstein, who once said “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

So since there are no guarantees in life and the next time we put ourselves out there, open to an experience – it could disappoint. However, it could also be better than our best.

Imagine that.

Returning to the present…

Sex can be explained like fashion. There are different fits and styles and saying someone is “ok” is like saying they’re “full-figured” – polite but clearly not praise.

And once you find that perfect outfit for you that accentuates your assets and hides the imperfections, it’s very hard to convince yourself to try on something new. But think about it this way, you don’t want to be Judith Lucy, stuck in a time warp and think big hair and jokes about vaginas are still in vogue.

It takes confidence and trial & error. Yes, you could be labelled as a slut. But look how far that’s gotten Sandra Sully? Of course, I’m only talking about her high-rating wardrobe. The only other thing higher is the support she receives … from her bra.

So like what lip-syncing does for Britney Spears, having your best experience to remember is a safety blanket and comfort zone that’s important. And for guys, sometimes it’s all we think about (in addition to food).

How can we get over it? Button up you shirt, straighten your tie, zip up your pants and go out there and face the big bad world. Or if you’re lucky – just do the opposite.

In my ECS class we discussed many issues throughout the course, but the one issue that really interested me was gender sexuality. Especially with regards to women, there is a societal ‘ideal’ or ‘norm’ that women strive to achieve. Gender Identity in the “Barbie Doll” often give children their first lessons in what a society considers valuable and beautiful. This starts young girls off on the life long struggle to become perfect and beautiful. Studies show that the probability of having Barbie’s body type is less than 1 in 100,000, therefore very few women are actually Barbie Doll perfect.

Even men have to strive to become like the Ken Barbie Doll. Ken is muscular and fit, but the chance of obtaining his body is 1 in 50, which is much more realistic of a goal.

People go through many surgeries to become their ‘perfect’ self. In my opinion, the slim, perfect women and the muscular, jacked male have to stop being the ideal. Instead have the ideal as a normal body that is a practical goal to achieve. With such high impossible body type standards, this starts young childen on a path of destruction and harm.

Today I realized that if you just say it aloud, it will clear your mind.

I had a short, but fruitful talk with my Mom about going back to school. I was surprised to hear that she was okay with it. She was really supportive about the idea. After I finished high school, I stopped for a year and went to a technical college. After that I took another year off. So basically I’m 20 and I’m only just starting a proper college… Ugh. I feel old. But I need to do this. There are not buts! I have to!

So right now.. I’ll be really busy planning my.. ahem, future. Feels weird. Almost as if I don’t deserve it. Heh Tell me.. I need assurance. Am I too old for this?

Every little girl gets Babrie doll as gift on her Birth day. But most of us don’t know when the Babrie doll was born. The Babrie doll was born 50 years back. The dream doll of every little girl is celebrating her 50th anniversary this year. This doll was first launched in Mar 1959 by American business woman Ruth Handler.

Barbie will be seen in a new avatar to celebrate her 50th anniversary. Barbie will don the traditional Islamic dress, Burqa, so that the girls wherever they are from should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them.
