I don’t know with you, guys, but Barbra Streisand is one of the greatest female singers ever. Her crystal-clear voice and diction, excellent vocal control, fabulous stage presence and consistent track record are hard to match, not even by the likes of Whitney Houston (who’s over-the-hill, imo) and Mariah Carey (she can be hit-or-miss) or the latest upstarts in the Hollywood music industry.

The very minute I learned about the release of her latest CD, I just had to rush to Odyssey to get a copy. She never disappoints. The orchestral version of all the cuts are, quite simply, a joy to listen to. The songs may not be a hit among the younger set, but they will surely be lapped up by the rest. I grew up listening to her music. And at her age (and mine), I am continuously amazed with her singing talent.

If you’re young and have doubts, give at least one of her tracks a try. If you’re older and a fan of Barbra, this one is a must-buy cd to add up to your collection. Her version of ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes’ is nothing short of phenomenal, just as the 12 other songs in the line-up like ‘Here’s To Life’ and ‘Love Dance.’

If you’re over 21, you can now play slot machines based on two of your favorite shows, “American Idol” and “Sex and the City.”

Both slots were new releases at the 2009 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. In “American Idol,” slot players can trigger a bonus round that lets them become one of three judges — Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi or Randy Jackson — and then plays video clips of past contestants, good AND bad.

According to Sphere.com, Paula Abdul was the lone holdout participant even BEFORE she announced she was leaving the show. Innnteresting.

Meanwhile, the “Sex and the City” slot machines are subtitled “Change of a Dress.” Clever, no? They feature bonus rounds that include video clips of all four women plus Mr. Big.

International Game Technology spokeswoman Julie Brown told Sphere, “There’s shoes and purses and lots of bling and big bonuses and the music track, and it’s a very interactive game.”

last night kyle showed me this cute little bar in the west village called marie’s crisis.   it looks like the basement of a restaurant with just a piano set up in the foyer but every night there’s a piano man who plays show tunes, BY HEART.  sunday night there’s a charmer named jim who’s been playing there for 21 years.  of course everyone is encouraged to sing along and most of the time that works out just fine (unless you’ve had one too many of the very strong drinks and end up butchering everyone’s favorite cabaret tune- but i guess that’s part of the charm)  also, who made a cameo but malan breton from project runway season 3?!  i didn’t really know who he was either but he sang “people“ from funny girl and nearly made me pee my pants. apparently he’s also a performer-hello!   i mean, he had to untie his bow tie before he started singing.  that’s shit is for realsies.

I have three major influences in my life.

My mother, the obsessive compulsive, super-smelling, freakishly-strong for her size, shoe loving, potato-chip eating marvel of genetic design that she is, Barbra Streisand (I know, surprisesurprise) and Oprah Winfrey.

Strong Black Women

Since her first show in 1986 I have been an Oprah fan.  I was six and she was Oprah.  She was the best thing to hit my afternoon TV since Reva Shayne on The Guiding Light.  Sure, I stopped watching her show when I got to high school and it began to interfere with my busy life of show choir [I still, 10 years and two sweatshirts later, am a little bit foggy on what exactly “Expressions in Motion” means but that might just be because when I was motion my expression was singular: pained.] and shadowing Windsor HS’ stage-manger extraordinaire in drama club rehearsals.  But with Oprah the adage “absence makes the heart grow fonder” was true.  The less I watched her show, the more terrific her personality loomed in my mind.

Some people believed in Jiminy Cricket.  I believed in Oprah.

When you wish upon a star, chose either Oprah or Barbra.

When people were running around with those silly WWJD bracelets (Answer: He’d slap you for wearing those stupid bracelets.) I would scoff at them and secretly think, “WWOWD.”  I even wore my hair like Oprah. (Somewhere there is the photographic evidence of this.  Let’s you and I both hope that they are not in electronic form.)  Oprah was everything I wanted to be: respected, successful and powerful.

So while I understand that after 25 years Oprah is ready to move on to other things, I’m really floored.  I feel like she just told Harpo to beat me.
I honestly thought that the Oprah Winfrey show would outlive me.  I thought that Oprah Winfrey would discover the cure for aging past 60 and would just go on forever.  I know that she’s striking out on her OWN but it won’t be the same.  I won’t be the same.  And now you know that awful Tyra is going to want her own channel too, though ANTM does pretty much own the CW which I guess sort of counts as half a network.  That just sent shivers down my spine.

But I guess once you’ve beaten the meat industry and picked a President there’s not much left.

Oh-prah.

 In recent weeks the American music industry has been celebrating the “Oprah Effect” on music sales, appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s celebrity talk show resulting in a No.1 album for Michael Buble and Barbra Streisand’s first US No.1 in 12 years. Whitney Houston’s turn on the show sparking a 77% increase in sales for her comeback album ‘I Look to You.’ The music industry had even coined a new catch-phrase, ‘Television is the new radio” and I’m sure they were carefully looking at their release schedules for “Oprah friendly” artists and planning to queue up for Oprah patronage and a shot at that 6.2 million viewership.

 As soon as the ‘Oprah Effect’ revealed itself, it’s over. Oprah has pulled the plug. The plug has a long chain thankfully. This week Winfrey advised her staff that the final show will go to air Sept. 9, 2011 — 25 years after the talk show’s debut. Plenty of time for plenty more record sales – if you catch Oprah’s eye and ear. Rap stars and celebrity girlfriend beaters need not apply. She’s already declared war on them.

This is probably my favourite song from ‘Funny Girl’, which is a very hard choice since there are so many great songs in that movie. Barbra’s performance is priceless! Love her!

Barbra Streisand – Don’t Rain On My Parade

"  "Alfie" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

It was the theme from the 1966 film Alfie. It was performed in the film during the end credits by Cher in an arrangement by Sonny Bono.

In 1966, Cher released her version (also the original version of this song) as a single. Released on the Imperial label, this version became a top forty hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Also in 1966, Cilla Black released her version of "Alfie" as a single. It became a top ten hit on the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number nine. It was also a minor hit for her on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the Billboard adult contemporary chart, two further versions competed in 1966. While Carmen McRae took her version to number 29 on that chart, the version by Joanie Sommers enjoyed greater success, peaking at number nine.

In a deleted scene from the movie Austin Powers in Goldmember, they parody the song, replacing Alfie with Austin. The song is sung by most of the main characters. Eu tenho memória de peixinho dourado, fato. Por isso, um top como esse pra mim é tortura total. Tenho certeza que tem 500 participações especiais que me fizeram chorar, rir, suspirar, me entupir de chocolate, fazer dancinhas idiotas e outros sensações diferentes que só a Deusa sabe porque eu sinto. Mas no momento eu pensei nessas e estou satisfeito, embora quase que 48h atrasado. Outro grande problema é que Wicked Sis postou muito antes e se eu colocasse algum dela, seria totally cheating. Ainda assim, Tracey Ullman  e Patricia Clarckson entrariam na minha lista any day. E a participação da Cher é uma das coisas mais engraçadas que Will and Grace já fizeram. And that is sayin’ something. But here we go again.

5- Victoria Beckham em Ugly Betty

Pra quem vê Betty (ninguém? ok, just me then…), o episódio do casamento de Wilhemina pra entrar na família Meade foi imperdível. Talvez pelo noivo ter um infarto e a noiva acabar roubando o sêmen do defunto, e depois tentado engravidar a amiga escocesa da Betty com o marido moribundo, mas que fez sexo antes da inseminação e estragou os planos da vilã, mas principalmente pela Victoria Beckham aparecendo em flashes o episódio inteiro tentando steal the thunder e aparecer mais do que a noiva. Gosto quando as celebridades brincam com suas imagens. E Betty teve algumas participações interessantes, a última foi a modelo brasileira que tinha fixação por uma fruta que só dava aqui e que supostamente seria a fruta da moda na próxima estação. No mesmo episódio, Lindsay Lohan em fim de carreira destrói todas as frutas antes do photoshoot. Pena que ainda assim a audiência esteja tão baixa.

4- Christina Ricci em Grey’s Anatomy

Mais do que a participação dela, esse episódio foi fooooda, definitivamente um dos melhores de Grey’s. Todo o storyline da bomba, onde Miss Vandinha não podia tirar o dedo senão explodiria foi eletrizante. Ali também começou o lado suicida de Meredith (que mais tarde praticamente se suicidaria), e o gatinho que fazia Early Edition e depois fez King Kong, terminou explodindo com a bomba, numa cena super chocante. Christina Ricci também ganha pontos por ter feito uma participação foooda em Ally McBeal como uma advogada super bitch que teve um casinho com John Cage.

3- Kevin Bacon em Will and Grace

Talvez depois da Cher, essa seja uma das melhores participações de Will and Grace, série que ficou muito marcada exatamente pelos ótimos special guests. Nesse episódio, Jack McFarland se torna stalker do Kevin Bacon, que numa auto-paródia de si mesmo, acaba contratando Jack como seu assistente. O bacana é que Kevin, na série pelo menos, é totalmente obcecado por si mesmo, e gosta de ter um stalker. E em dois momentos pelo menos ele faz a dancinha de footloose. Clap Clap por saber se rir de si mesmo.

2- Christina Applegate em Friends

Ok, então a Patricia Clarckson participou de 7 episódios e ganhou 2 Emmys. Big Deal. Christina Applegate participou de 2 e ganhou por um e foi indicado pelo outro. God knows quantos ela ganharia com uns episódios a mais. Não querendo comparar as duas, mas a participação da ex-Kelly Bundy é hilária. E Friends tem 1 zilhão e meio de participações especiais memoráveis (incluindo a Punky da antiga série de tv, lembram dela? Ela faz a namorada do Joey que fica batendo nele. Bizarro, né?) Mas a briga das irmãs é clássica, acho que pouca gente conseguiu ofuscar os atores principais como Applegate (embora a crazy lady with the plates Monica esteja on fire). Mas Brad Pitt também foi ótimo, e Danny De Vito, e Jean Claude Van Damme, Helen Hunt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts…

1- Barbra em The Judy Garland Show

Ok, mais um musical… grow up. Mas fazer o que, né? Thats who I am. Eu tento não ser esse ser cantante e pulante, mas eu não consigo. Não apenas a música é foda, Happy Days are here again não apenas é linda como se tornou hino do partido republicano depois. E Barbra, que na época não tinha feito nenhum filme e ainda se preparava pra se tornar a artista mais rentável por décadas, ganhadora de Emmys, Grammys e Oscar. E a Judy teria seu show cancelado pouco depois, teria uma overdose e morreria. Mas naquele instante, durante aquela participação, elas foram eternas, e graças ao youtube, nós podemos ver mesmo sem pagar 200 dolares em DVDs importados. E o bacana é que uma já alfineta a outra, just like the two divas they really are. E pra quem acha que isso foi muito musical, esperem até a semana que vem. hihihi

Last week it seemed like it was 2001 (and we all know what a banner year that was for America) now it seems like it might be 1998.

Why?

Because Lilith Fair is back. I know that I’m the last to know (I am not on the email list), but it’s breaking news to me.  And secretly the young, I’m not quite sure if I’m a lesbian but I like it here because all of these ladies are super friendly to me and I do enjoy a compliment, BPD is pleased as punch because well, all of the ladies at Lilith Fair were super friendly to me and I do enjoy a compliment.

But still, one of my favourite people at work who I haven’t figured out a moniker for yet (and frankly doesn’t OOMFPAWWIHFOAMFOY seems a bit long? Awesome, but long.) and I were talking about how we just can’t get all of the way behind it.

Because I mean, the late nineties were all about ladies doing their best Joni Mitchell impressions what with their guitars and their scarves and their sing-songwriter with a little dash of now let’s all sleep with each other thrown in. Oh those Halcyon days, when all a girl needed was a sweet pair of overalls and a beaded necklace.

But we’re in the two-thousandsies (Dr. Rachel Maddow says it and so can I!) now and things have changed. I mean, sure, ladies are still super friendly to me and I do enjoy a compliment but the music landscape is totally different. I haven’t seen my overalls in a while now and I always give RHS the stink-eye when she ties on a scarf. Also, who’s going to play?

I mean, they’re nice girls and all, but I just don’t get the Lilith vibe from them, you know, and the former headliners are, well, former.

I mean, Sarah McLachlan hasn’t had a job in ages. Those ASPCA promos just don’t pay the bills.

The Indigo Girls have faded to just plain old blue. Emily went and got her heart broke and Amy Ray went and got… uhm, younger women?

Tori Amos has made it clear that she’s not into the Lilith Fair (Isn’t she just our favourite little megalomaniac outside of Barbra?) so we can count her out – again.

Who’s left?

Joan Osborn – haven’t heard from her in ages so I’m thinking that she got mugged by one of those strangers on the bus.

Shawn Colvin?
I’ve got no jokes about Shawn Colvin. Sunny plays with fire.

So you can see the dilemma.

Who’s currently happening in the industry that fits within the Lilith milieu? And does anybody still want to pay to sit on a lawn among the scarfed and questionably washed (friendly though they may be) to see them?

These are the tough questions facing the Lilith Fair promoters. And I know that there are lists all over the interwebs with dream line-ups and they’re alright and all, but I have one that beats them all.

Meet Brendon Adams. A local football player hittin’ in at 7 feet 4 inches tall. The catch: the lil’ fucker is FOURTEEN!? Obviously, I just used the word “lil” to be ironic.

Ladies and gents, here’s the thing. I’m MAYBE 5′4″, if we’re being generous and I’m wearing my heels. That makes this dude TWO FEET taller than me at 8 years younger. He was taller than me at age 11! Never in my entire life have I felt so damn short. Brendon, if you’re reading, fuck you for making me feel inadequate! Alright, Brendon my friend, I’m just kidding. I know it’s not your fault, and you’re having horrible health problems because of your height, but still: Fuck you. Now I feel midgit-esque ’cause of your tall ass.

And now he’s playing football. He can’t run. Can’t jump. Just takes a few steps, catches the football, and then… well, the article doesn’t say what happens next. Hopefully they don’t make the other kids tackle him. That’d be tragic. Hillarious. Worth paying to see. But tragic.

On second thought, I’d give my whole paycheck to watch a gang of lil’ 14 year old kids bring that dude to the ground! That shit is Pay Per View worthy. It’s Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant all over again. Only real.

The article goes on to say that they are feeding him hormones to stop his growing. STOP THAT, YOU BASTARDS! The kid is only 9 inches short of the tallest man ALIVE! If he’s going to be tall, awkward, and die early, at least give him a chance to gun for the title! This kid’s life is going to blow. Hard. He already has fuckin’ arthritis for shit’s sake. Whoever you are, if you’re reading (because highly advanced doctors usually read my blog, it IS full of relevant information in the field. Just see my blog on the the biggest threat human health has ever faced. ), then heed my words: Stop stopping my homie Brendon’s growth! You’re big, mean poopie-heads and are ruining his dream! Well, it’s my dream FOR him, but still.

I’m not saying I’m not concerned about his health. I mean, I’m not. But I’m not SAYING that I’m not. I’m sure you have some medical reason for stopping his growth. Maybe when he hits 8′3″ his heart will explode out of his ass, I don’t know. But the fact of the matter is: That’s a small risk for him to take for my entertainment!

Sadly, this is for people’s entertainment. It’s another case of explotive public interest news stories. They can’t SAY it’s for entertainment purposes, because that shit isn’t P.C.

Back in the day, if you were that friggin’ huge, you’d be in a freakshow. You’d have your ugly mug plastered onto posters everywhere, and some douchebag in a top hat would charge five bucks a pop for other douchebags to poke you with sticks and throw popcorn at you. This is what nature intended when they created these people!

Produced by the hitman David Foster, Bob Rock and Humberto Gatica, Michael Bublé describes Crazy Love as the “ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships.” First single off the album, Haven’t Met You Yet is a uptempo track which are already playing in all radio station worldwide since September 2009. Barbra Streisand have also released a jazz album. The album, Love Is The Answer was produced by Diana Krall and features Krall on piano. Orchestral arrangements are by Johnny Mandel, Anthony Wilson and Alan Broadbent. The album’s triumph in taking over the Billboard album charts (Paramore and Mariah Carey album was released on the same week) proves that the legendary Streisand still has the musical flair that captivates music lovers. My favourite songs from this album are Make Someone Happy and her remake of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.

Tremate gente perché i gatti più famosi del mondo sono arrivati anche nella città eterna.

Cats, nato dal genio Andrew Lloyd Webber (ispirato alle poesie di Thomas Stearns Eliot con aggiunte di Trevor Nunn e Richard Stiloge), andato in scena la prima volta al New London Theater nel West End di Londra l’11 maggio 1981 è arrivato anche da noi attraverso la trasposizione teatrale della Compagnia della Rancia, la principale società di produzione di musical in Italia, in questi giorni in scena al Teatro Sistina di Roma.

Dopo quasi 30 anni questi gatti fanno ancora impazzire le platee di tutto il mondo con le loro storie, i loro balli e i loro splendidi costumi (quante ore ci vorranno per far assomigliare il volto umano a quello di un gatto? pensare che c’è gente che paga oro per averlo sotto l’effetto di un bisturi loro ci mettono qualche ore e solo qualche trucco).

Trama: Come ogni anno i gatti della tribù Jellicle si sono dati appuntamento al chiaro di luna per festeggiare insieme al loro leader Deuteronomio, il quale dovrà scegliere chi tra loro passerà al “Dolce aldilà” per rinascere a nuova vita. I Jellicle si presentano e raccontano la loro storia. Tra di loro c’è anche Grisabella, un tempo gatta affascinate ora reietta del gruppo.

Momento speciale e il più celebrato di tutto lo spettacolo è la canzone Memory interpretata dalla stessa Grisabella (canzone poi ripresa da oltre 100 artisti in tutto il mondo compresa Barbra Streisand).

La messa in scena al Teatro Sistina è splendidamente arrangiata e accurata nei dettagli musicali, con ottimi interpreti e meravigliosi costumi. Purtroppo la parte coreografica manca a tratti di stile e di sintonia tra i vari attori.

Malgrado questa pecca Cats rappresenta una un’ottima interpretazione e opportunità di conoscere e apprezzare il musical che ha fatto storia e continua a mietere vittime feline in ogni parte del globo.
