Today I stayed at home and did Barb Wire from the other day, scaled of course, and only three rounds. Rx’d, it’s four rounds for time, with three-minute rests in between of:

-40 sit-ups (the one thing I can do all in a row with no breaks)
-30 push-ups (I did half of these military-style, and half girlie)
-20 pull-ups (used the gray band)
-10 heavy thrusters (I used 25# dumb bells, because that’s what I have at home)

My rounds were 4:50, 5:12, 4:49. The last round was fastest because I had gone to all girlie push-ups at that point. But I wasn’t about to do a fourth round. By the third round, my pull-ups were one at a time.

How would you react when the person you are currently going out with, started to talk about their past relationships? I was never good at hiding my feelings or expression. A pang of jealousy suddenly rushed into me last night. I may not be good at hiding my feelings, but whenever I face a situation which I need to hide my feelings, I will quickly build up a wall around me. Sometimes will try not to react and just look away. My reply would be either ‘repeating the key words of his statement but in a more sympathetic way and more like throwing back a question at him; i.e “She was devastated when we broke up, she called me 15 times and I never pick up, not once” – My lame repeating and questioning him back would be “She called 15 times after you broke up? and you never pick it up? hmm … wow”. Other than this, I would say “really?… hmmm… ok.” Translation – “Whatever” or “I don’t give a tiny rat’s ass about it” – quote from Ross.

Am I starting to care for this guy? Like they said “Even the hardest rock, over time, will crack eventually”. Perhaps, I do care. He gets to me when I notice the little thing he does for me. Like the other day, I was scheduled to met him at Italiannies, as I was scanning for his face among the strangers in the room, he came a sneak up at me, cutely pulled the edge of my coach and whispered ‘Hi’ on my left ear. It happened again on a separete occassion. After the movies, he had to leave. After a few flights down with the escalator, he was going to the basement while I stopped at the Lower Ground. He hopped on the escalator to go to the basement and turned around, looking for me. I was standing there looking at him, just smiled and wave my goodbyes. He actually forgot that I’m not following him to basement, he went blank. Then I went to one of the restaurants, as I was walking alone, again i felt someone tapped on my coach from behind. I turned around and saw him there. Smiling sheepishly, blushing ( his fair so it’s easy to tell). “Hi. Just wanted to say goodbye. Thanks for tonight. Sorry about just now” and still smiling, saw his white nice teeth. I replied with a smile “Hey, no worries.” I felt so touched that he came back to just say that.

He never talked about his ex or even other girls. Not for that so many years I’ve known him, not once. He never admitted he was seeing someone at any time. He kept saying he’s single. So, is this a sign he is finally opening up? Perhaps he is. Other things, I’m starting to learn his favorite dish, like he loves Nasi Kerabu, Mee Sup or anything that is Noodles. He doesn’t like Nasi Kandar (weird isn’t it? I always thought he’s gay or bi-sexual), he doesn’t like Curry or spicy food. Gulai Lemak Cili Api is so-so, but again not so spicy. Hmmm.. he is even fussier than me. He kept asking or joking with me to learn how to prepare a Nasi Kerabu because he’d like to eat it every week.

My first reaction when he said that “excuse me?”. Second reaction “i never understand how to eat nasi kerabu”. Third reaction “I don’t fancy the east coast people BUT I like their beaches and I like their culture, but not their character. I love Nasi Dagang, now that is something i don’t mind learning the recipe”. He laughed. That nasi kerabu teasing has been going on for a month, and recently was yesterday. First step from like to something more? Or he’s teasing?

So tell me, what is the right reaction when the person you are going out with (not exclusive), started to talk about their ex.

a. Listen to their story and show your concern. Like you are a good sport but actually you would like to strangle him with a barbwire because talking about his ex.

This one is a little less romantic than the last post but it has a certain brutal beauty. Clearly not in the same league but I was always fascinated by Picasso’s Guernica which was shows the horror of war in a way that is multi layered and profound. I guess here I was trying to distill beauty and horror into one apparently warm image. Industry vs. nature. Warm vs. cold. Beauty vs. beast. Mother nature vs. mankind. Not sure I totally succeeded…

Another thing I like about this is that it’s one of the small things aorund us that get ignored but that artists can bring to poeple’s attention. I like small details they add the texture to humdrum lives. Most cars in a  particular class are the same but the details are what persuade one person to buy a certain car over another…the devil is in the detail.

‘Long Live Novel!’ This may never be written again, for Monsieur Novel has been long and truly buried.

He neither died of old age nor was assassinated but succumbed to a painful self-inflected wound of popular neglect. In this age of ‘less is more’, the elderly Novel was found wanting in brevity of speech and slimness of girth.

Fed on morsels of exaggeration, he refused to go on a word-diet. Finally, his size grew too big for his reputation. His flowing robes of ornamentation got stuck in the barbwire of terseness, and he rolled down into the Valley of Disuse.

There was no bang, but a whimpering fadeout into the oblivion. Even the autopsy didn’t do justice to Monsieur Novel’s elaborate body of work. The postmortem report was short – ‘Died In Prose’.

The final nail on the coffin was hit when the self-written obituary of Novel wasn’t read out in full. Instead, a cruel 2-line synopsis composed by Reverend Fate was emailed to all the literary godfathers – “Here lies the One who was frequently written of. Now, He has been feverishly written off.” And the people who were supposed to mourn this loss were busy celebrating elsewhere!

A tiny baby girl had been born to the womb of Mrs. Creativity. Naturally, she was named – Micro.

Her arrival was premature, but her stay was meant to be permanent. Mr. Blog was the father and wasn’t he elated! Writers from far and wide flocked to embrace her.Some cuddled the toddler with their pens and others stroked her chin with a mouse.

In this assembly, Novel – the late literary giant – was being shredded of his sanctity by the piercing tongues of novices, and nobody complained. But, a soothsayer, who had witnessed the birth of the expressive Novel, declared – “Micro is Novel reborn”! Lo and behold, there was a fatal hush in the house.

Suddenly, an old lady entered the scene. “She was one of the many who courted Novel and together they created many masterpieces”, someone shouted. They all watched as she went upto the cradle and picked up Micro.

“Welcome back, my dear Novel!

How I wish people had the time and patience to enjoy your varied nuances.

How I hope the storytellers treated you with some respect.

Only if countless trees had not been cut to make room for your trysts with Baroness Paper, environmentalists might have tolerated you?

What if you has chosen your syllables well and weren’t merely a tool in the hands of propagandists?

What if you had toned down your flab while living? Now as you reincarnate as Miss Micro, I yearn to fall in love with you again!”

The silent room was overwhelmed by emotions and broke out in an unending applause. In the midst of the cacophony, one person chuckled at how one and all had fallen to her vicious charms and clever masquerade.

The wink in Micro’s eye was obvious.
