I am currently reading a book which has allegedly sold more than twice as many copies around the world than there are people living in Britain. JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings‘, according to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, er, I mean according to Wikipedia, has been purchased 150 million times since it was first published in 1954. By Wiki-reckoning it is the second most popular fictional work of all time, coming in 50 million copies shy of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens. Pretty impressive, until you read that the Bible is estimated to have sold somewhere between 2.5 and 6 billion and Chairman Mao’s ‘Little Red Book’ has been snapped up by at least 800 million and perhaps as many as 6.5 billion paying customers. The Koran is high up the list too, lest Islam should feel aggrieved that Christians and Communists are hogging the limelight, as they did for much of the 20th century.

Of course such figures are bunk, really. Barcodes and digital tracking have only been in existence for a relatively short time compared to the lifespan of the religious tomes included in the list. How exactly can anyone know how many copies of a book like The Bible have been sold over a span of some two thousand years? ‘Ring Ring!’ “Hello?” “Oh hello, is that the Pope?” “Yes it is, who is calling?” “Hello, my name is Bernard, I am calling from Wikipedia. Anyway, I’m reading Tolkien again for a couple of reasons. One is because I’ve been under the weather and there is nothing like a huge book to plough through when illness makes concentrating on other things difficult. And the beauty of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is that one can drop off in the middle of some of the interminably long songs and poems by the elves or the dwarves, and wake up several pages later when the ditty has finally ended. But the other reason I’ve returned to a book I first read when I was about sixteen and have reread on quite a few occasions since, is because I have recently read the ‘Inkheart‘ triilogy by Cornelia Funke. I am new to her work (as happens so often these days, the film drew me to the novels) and became so immersed in the Inkworld that I could not help but compare the reading experience with that first time I read Tolkein. They are miles apart in style and divergent in tone but Funke has achieved what few beyond Tolkien have achieved – she has conjured up an entire world from her own imagination which, despite its dangers and tragedies, almost seems preferable to the real world. Why? For the same reason many of us wish we could slip inside Tolkien’s pages and spend time in Middle Earth: the Inkworld and the world of the Hobbits are worlds of honour, of valour and of the kind of romantic heroism which seems sadly lacking in our own times. Our heroes, according to the gutter press and commercial television, are self-obsessed wannabe celebrities and people who appear in soap-operas on TV. Call me strange and bookish if you must but who would you rather have at your side in a crisis, Leona Lewis and Katie Price or a couple of doughty hobbits and an axe-wielding dwarf?

Mens magazine Esquire isn’t going to just sit around and watch print die. Oh no. The people behind the scenes are working hard to come up with ideas that combine digital with the analog. Augmented Reality is what they came up with this year. Tech savvy readers will remember that Esquire pulled a similar marketing stunt last year with their e-paper covers.

Augmented reality is an image embedded in that digital block that you see between Robert Downey Jr’s legs. Yes, the one he’s beckoning you to scan with your webcam. Augmented reality technology allows a camera to be pointed at that little digital barcode that stores information. The camera will then translate that digital pixels into something meaningful to the viewer. So, you hold your magazine up to a webcam, and through a special program, you can see something on that digital barcode that you cannot see in reality, thus the name augmented reality.

The technology is starting to gain traction in the advertising and marketing world. The possibilities are endless, and certainly would engage the reader to connect the analog and digital limitations. Will we see a lot more augmented reality? Absolutely. Is AR going to replace traditional print advertising? Doubtful. The lazy in all of us wouldn’t invest more time into an advertisement unless the AR was polygon of a naked chick. It’s a gimmick for now, only for true tech geeks. Looks like print survives another day.

Jakarta (ANTARA News – Kamis, 19 November 2009 22:26 WIB) – Operator telekomunikasi, Indosat, mengembangkan layanan transaksi dengan telepon seluler atau HP yang diberi nama Dompetku yang dapat diaplikasikan di jaringan toko ritel Alfamart.

Chief Marketing Officer Indosat, Guntur Siboro, di Jakarta, Kamis, mengatakan, pihaknya telah mengaplikasikan teknologi yang handal (host 2 host) sehingga pelanggan cukup menggunakan token (kode pembayaran untuk pembelanjaan di merchant) untuk melakukan transaksi pembelian.

“Pembelian saat ini tidak hanya terbatas pada Alfamart 24 jam, namun seluruh toko Alfamart bukan Alfa Midi di area Jabotabek,” katanya.

Dompetku merupakan suatu layanan yang memungkinkan pelanggan untuk melakukan pembayaran, pembelian, pemindahan uang melalui mobile phone yang dimilikinya dengan menggunakan account yang telah didaftarkan.

Semua pengguna Matrix, IM3, dan Mentari dapat menikmati layanan itu dan untuk sementara baru dapat dinikmati oleh pelanggan-pelanggan Indosat yang berada di Jakarta, Bandung dan Surabaya.

“Inovasi lainnya adalah untuk melakukan isi ulang voucher atau cash in, yang semula hanya bisa dilakukan di Galeri Indosat, kini bisa dilakukan melalui jaringan ATM Bank Permata, yang merupakan salah satu Bank yang terhubung hampir ke seluruh Bank yang ada di Indonesia,” katanya.

Ia menambahkan, isi ulang juga bisa dilakukan melalui Bank Jaringan Bersama ALTO Prima dan juga di Alfamart (merchant).

Guntur mengatakan, registrasi untuk mendapatkan layanan itu mudah karena pelanggan cukup menelepon ke nomor 789 dari ponselnya.

“Transaksi keuangan baik pembelian maupun pembayaran tagihan dan pengisian pulsa dapat dilakukan semudah mengirim SMS dan pelanggan akan menerima SMS jawaban sebagai bukti transaksi,” katanya.

Pihaknya menjamin penuh keamanan transaksi dengan Dompetku karena layanan itu dilengkapi dengan sistem perlindungan maksimal.

“Pelanggan pilih sendiri, setiap transaksi yang pelanggan lakukan juga akan di-encrypt (diacak) untuk menjamin keamanan transaksi pelanggan tersebut,” katanya.(*)

INILAH.COM, Jakarta – Masuknya pemain asing seperti Walmart dan Tesco dalam pasar ritel modern domestik, akan memperketat persaingan. Namun, kondisi ini diyakini belum mengancam peritel lokal.

Purwoko Sartono analis dari Panin Sekuritas mengatakan, masuknya pemain asing memang belum tentu jadi ancaman perital lokal seperti PT Matahari Putra Prima (MPPA), PT Ramayana Lestari Sentosa (RALS), dan PT Mitra Adiperkasa (MAPI). “Tetapi, bila meliat target pasarnya, tentu bisa menjadi berita buruk bagi saham bersangkutan,” ujarnya Kamis (19/11).

Purwoko mengakui, Walmart dan Tesco memang termasuk peritel besar dan handal di negerinya. Namun, belum tentu dapat bertahan di Indonesia, “Sebelum krisis, Walmart juga pernah masuk ke Indonesia, tapi gagal,” tukasnya.

Seperti diketahui, dua raksasa ritel dunia, Tesco dari Inggris dan Walmart dari AS, berencana masuk ke pasar ritel Indonesia. Ketua Umum Asosiasi Pengusaha Ritel Indonesia (Aprindo), Benjamin J Mailool mengatakan, peritel asing ini kemungkinan masuk melalui sistem merger, yang notabene lebih mudah ketimbang membuat baru.

Menurutnya, selain populasi penduduk yang besar, pasar Indonesia menarik untuk pengembangan bisnis ritel. Hal ini terkait pertumbuhan ekonomi yang masih positif.

“Namun, peritel asing juga masih mencermati kepastian hukum dan regulasi perdagangan,” ujarnya. Purwoko merekomendasikan saham ritel MPPA dan RALS. “Emiten ini dapat menjadi pilihan menarik saat ini,” imbuhnya..

MPPA saat ini belum akan melirik lagi pasar di luar negeri dan fokus menggarap ritel di dalam negeri, meski berhasil menjadi peritel terbaik di Asia Pasifik untuk ketiga kalinya.

Direktur Corporate Communication Matahari Danny Kojongian mengatakan krisis ekonomi dunia juga menjadi pertimbangan peritel multiformat itu sehingga belum berminat lagi menggarap pasar di negara lain, setelah membuka satu department store Matahari di Shenzhen, China, pada 2006.

Sedangkan Danareksa Securities masih mempertahankan rekomendasi beli untuk RALS. Hal ini seiring kinerja kuartal krtiga 2009 yang masih in line dengan ekspektasi, meskipun sedikit melebihi forecast konsensus. “Kami masih mempertahankan target harga di Rp720 dengan rekomendasi beli,” ungkapnya.

Per Oktober 2009, penjualan RALS turun 25% dibandingkan sebulan sebelumnya menjadi Rp298 miliar. Hal ini karena faktor hari raya yang sudah berlalu. Sedangkan penjualan secara kumulatif turun 3,3% menjadi Rp4,68 triliun dibandingkan periode yang sama tahun lalu. “Angka ini telah mencapai 81,6% dari estimasi 2009 kami,” tambahnya.

Ia menjelaskan, sejak awal tahun, same store growth SSG per November 2009 membaik menjadi minus 3,9% dari sebelumnya minus 4%. Namun, peningkatan tersebut tidak signifikan dari yang diharapkan, akibat rendahnya penjualan 2009.

“Estimasi pendapatan 2009 masih dipertahankan, meskipun prediksi 2010 diturunkan 5,1%, akibat merosotnya penjualan dan kenaikan biaya operasional,” jelasnya.

Untuk MAPI, PT Pemeringkat Efek Indonesia (Pefindo) baru-baru ini telah memberi rating id A+ atas obligasi I/2009. Dengan peringkat tersebut, lembaga pemeringkatan menilai prospek keuangan maupun kinerja perusahaan ritel ini dalam kondisi stabil.

Analis Pefindo Vonny Widjaja dan Niken Indriarsih menyatakan, rating tersebut menggambarkan posisi MAPI yang kuat di industri ritel modern Indonesia. MAPI memiliki strategi pasar yang kuat lewat diversifikasi produk, strategi pemasaran, dan jalur distribusi yang luas sesuai target konsumennya, yakni kelas menengah-atas.

Kinerja perseroan juga memuaskan. Sepanjang kuartal ketiga 2009, MAPI berhasil membukukan kenaikan penjualan 22% dan laba bersih hingga 100%. Perseroan pun memiliki 689 gerai di seluruh Indonesia.

Dengan masuknya swasta asing ke pasar domestik, industri ritel dalam negri tampaknya masih bisa bertahan. Hal ini didukung membaiknya daya beli, terindikasi dengan reboundnya indeks CCI dan Retail Sales Index. Selain ditopang kondisi makro yang menguat, terutama dengan ekspektasi membaiknya inflasi dan tingginya pertumbuhan ekonomi. [mdr]

Design Barcodes from D-Barcode

In a fastcompany article, I read this fascinating story about well-designed barcodes. Since 2005, D-barcode has been creating amazing design barcodes for its customers. This is an excellent example of creativity. Creativity not just lies in bringing out a novel product but also lies in expressing the same thought in aesthetically a more pleasing way. Barcode is probably one of the most ‘un-cool’ elements in any product. But D-Barcode has converted this very mundane element into an excellent example of ‘Expression Creativity’. The concept of Expression Creativity, originally proposed by Dr. Pradip Khandwalla deals with expressing an existing idea or object in a novel and creative manner. So, your an IM freak. Wasting day after day, month after month in front of your PC screen assuming: “yeah, surely I’m not a zombie, at least I’m communicating with other living things, right?”. Well, your wrong. You are a zombie and you will die alone. But we’ll discuss that subject some other time. Right now we are here to show you the best 5 ways to coolify your name i.e. your IM/social media display name. We’ll assume that you’ve already tried putting smileys or hearts or some other dumb bullshit in your display name, or if you’re really hardcore you’ve already tired the fishes (example: <º))))><.·´¯`·John Smith·´¯`·.¸><((((º>) or some other poorly creative ASCII combination thinking “that’s the one, now I’m unique”. Well, you’re wrong again, you’re not unique, and you probably never will be. But no worries, we’re here to help and give you that conversation starting nick, bringin’ lots of them “d00d, WTF is that?”. So lets start from the top saying a few words about what ASCII is. ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a 7-bit representation of the English alphabet widely used in information technology and the world wide web until recently when it started to get replaced by the UTF-8 witch is an improved character encoding technique. We are saying this because when you try to convert a Chinese letter into something else and you get an error you won’t bitch about it. Instead you’ll know that most of the converters work only with the 128 ASCII characters and you’ll feel less dumb. But enough about character encoding techniques. Lets start the countdown. There are many converters, generators, translators, encoders and such out there, but very few of them are actually good and usable. So we’ve made this list to help you create that unique display name that you’ve always wanted without having to browse the web for days searching for the method that’s right for you.

1. Binary code
-The binary code is a text representing system using only the digits “1″ and “0″. It can also represent processor instructions but we’re not interested in that. We’re only interested in what you can do with it in terms of encoding text. The answer is plenty. Like in the picture shown bellow you can encode your name into binary code making it readable for only a small number of people out there. So when your IM contacts see that long string of ones and zeroes sitting in the place of your dull name they are bound to ask “what the hell man?”. 2. Hex code
-If the binary code isn’t strong enough for you, you could try the hexadecimal one. Instead of only 2 symbols the motherfucker uses sixteen distinct symbols for representation. It uses the numbers from 0-9 and the letters from A-F to represent the values ten to fifteen. If you thought math was hard, try doing it in hex. A+C=WTF? Because hex code scares us a little bit we’re not going to say anything else about it, instead we’ll only give you the hex generators and leave you with a warning. DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND HEX OR YOU’LL DIE!!!

3. Morse code
-If you wanna kick it old school we recommend the Morse code. All of us have heard about it, and we all know that it represents the characters with dots “.” and dashes “-”. The short and long elements can also be presented in a form of sound, light, etc. But since most of us have never been in the navy, we have no clue in understanding it or how to use it. Fortunately the internet is here to help, giving us the opportunity to create or decode Morse code. The first and third Morse generators give us the option to create and download not only the visual representation shown in dots an dashes but the audio one also. That’s pretty useless when you’re trying to change your display name, but it can be used as a pretty sweet ring tone or an alarm or something that will beep the fuck of your friends.

*The Morse code doesn’t support lower case letters, so everything that you decode will be shown in upper case, regardless of the way it was originally encoded (lower or upper case).

4. Barcode
-This way of generating text or other stuff also is useless in terms with your display name because the end result of the generator will be a image and not a string of text that you could use as a nick. But it could make you a great avatar, or a cell phone background or such which will distinguish you from the rest. Just don’t tattoo the barcode on yourself because you’ll eventually regret it, and you’ll look like a douche. You’ve been warned.

*We recommend the code 128 because it supports letters and digits, and because it’s the most barcody looking.

5. L33t
-This isn’t an actual language, so it doesn’t have strict rules in regards with it’s creating and it’s interpretation. There are many variants of leet so the translation from leet to plane English isn’t always correct. Also there are many forms of leetness starting from plain leet and going to advanced leet which like the binary code can be fully understood by very few people. These are the best leet translators and generators that we could find, but unlike the other translators mentioned earlier these three aren’t compatible with each other. In other words, something that has been translated into leet in one translator can’t be translated back into plain English in an other. That’s because leet isn’t an actual language, like we mentioned earlier. So if you’re a hardcore nerd you won’t need these three translators. And for the rest of you boys and girls out there… go nuts…

There are a number of tools that attempt to take comparison shopping and price checking to a mobile platform.  SnapTell for iPhone and ShopSavvy on Android, for example.  I’ve not had the chance to use ShopSavvy, but have used SnapTell. 

SnapTell makes use of image recognition like LaneHawk does for a checkout scenario, recognizing the image of the product, and then connecting results to a database to look up the product, generally with a price lookup online.   

ShopSavvy, and the relatively new RedLaser for iPhone use image recognition on barcodes, but there are 2 small game changers here compared to SnapTell and other image recognition apps:

1.  Users don’t have to hit a button to take a photo and then submit it.  The solution shows a square to align the barcode within.  When the unit has something it wants to capture, the square turns green.  When it can capture, it just does so, vibrating briefly and showing the results.  This saves users at least 2 button presses used on other image capture solutions.  Doesn’t sound like much, but any removal of complexity is a win on the retail floor.

2.  It’s much faster than the other solutions I’ve used to do the same thing.  Images of barcodes are probably simpler to compare than a vast database of images of DVDs, CDs and books, but whatever the reason, it’s more responsive, meaning less standing in an aisle wondering what the solution is doing. 

The database has had challenges with some products, but that’s not surprising, considering the number of products with barcodes in the world.  It also does not appear to read GS 1 Databar codes – at least not coupons.    There were also problems in lower light conditions, and shaky hands (too much caffeine) but in all fairness, in 90% of cases, a retail environment has adequate lighting and steadiness to allow RedLaser to work very, very well.  As an optical scanner, RedLaser is very impressive.  

What’s the real game changer here?  The potential of using cameras to capture barcodes is not new, and certainly not nearly as fast or accurate as purpose built barcode scanners.  Where potential exists is on how it barcode scanning can be leveraged on mobile. 

All of the apps are understandably focused on price checking at this point, but how much can one save on a bottle of Purel, and how convenient is it to have to scan every item one picks up in a store to price check.   The pennies may or may not be worth it.  Given the incredibly small footprint of cameras these days, there could be real potential in using cameras for barcode scanning on mobile POS in a specialty low volume environment.  The tiny readers on current handheld units are just as bad at reading the codes, so why not use low cost cameras on handheld mobile devices that could be used for other purposes in store, like documenting the condition of damaged goods at a site, or validating that corporately mandated displays and planagrams are in place?  Using cameras may also one day allow retailers to leverage the personal phones staff or even their own customers to complete transactions, though that will take some improvements in the solution, and a significant culture shift.
