My Dad is a big fan of Al Brown. Since he got Stoked (one of Brown’s cookbooks), Brown’s creations have been a firm fixture in our lives. I’m not complaining. The food that comes onto the table as a result of this relationship is divine.

So after a pretty useless attempt at being a good daughter on Fathers Day I decided that a good treat for both myself and my Dad would be to take him to Depot – Brown’s latest restaurant venture.

Nestled on Federal St, Depot is cosy but in the right way. It’s sort of rustic but in that super trendy way that a lot of new bars and restaurants seem to be going. They don’t do bookings, and when we went on a Saturday for lunch it was fairly busy but this wasn’t a problem at all. As soon as we walked through the doors a waiter was with us to seat us at a table and get the food underway.

The menu at Depot is based on shared plates (aka my favourite sort of eating). We ordered in groups of about three dishes and nibbled our way through. It’s a fun way to eat – you get to try lots of food and each dish becomes a conversation piece as everyone is trying the same things.

We ordered:

Mahurangi Oysters. I’m not an oyster fan but these were well appreciated by the parents.

Duck tongue Popcorn. Surprisingly tasty even if I struggled with the concept.

Turbot sliders. AMAZING. Fresh, creamy delicious fish with watercress and tartare. I could eat these forever!

Santorini Sliders – lamb and tzatiki, cucumber. Super tasty.

Open veal liver sandwiches. Again not usually a fun but I tried it and I loved it.

Asparagus and tapenade butter. Summer is here.

My favourite dishes would have had to be the sliders. But that could just be because they’re my favourite thing at the moment. C’mon – who can pass up a bite sized burger?!

The drink selection isn’t too bad either. They boast a fairly impressive drinks selection – Old Mout on tap, endless craft beers, lots of wine. My Dad was quite excited about it.

It was a totally divine experience, but it wouldn’t have been complete without some amazing service. It was snappy and super friendly without being overbearing in the slightest. Hugely attentive and a real joy. There were lots of little elements that really boosted the experience – a plate of bread and hummus for while we perused the menu, hooks under the tables for handbags, tumblers for the wine. You get the picture. It’s decadent but not pretentious which is great.

If I had the budget I’d probably eat at Depot every day. It’s definitely nudged it’s way up into my favourite places to eat (along with Barilla, Q, Tyler St Garage etc) and I’d highly recommend it. You can find it on Federal St next door to the Grand Hotel (Sky City complex). You can peruse the menu here – but it changes depending on what they’ve got in.

This week was back to uni and a lot of feeling really uninspired.

But on Monday the boys decided to get a kitten, on Tuesday a little kitty kat moved in and now I have a new best friend. Sometimes he tries to eat me, but most of the time we’re pretty bro’sy, pretty cuddly. I’m not sure how Griff would feel about this…
Also on Tuesday I took a group of people to Barilla to feast on dumplings. It was awesome because they were all newbies to it but loved it. Big sigh of relief because otherwise I probably couldn’t be friends with them anymore. I may have also had it again on Wednesday….don’t judge me.
I almost forgot but I also went to my sisters Kids 4 Kids concert on Monday, which wasn’t too painful and she loved so that was pretty cool. I did the Kids 4 Kids concerts as a kid as well so it was a bit of reminiscing.
On Thursday I went out for dinner with work which was really cool. We went to Tyler St Garage (aka yummy) and drank cocktails and I got reminded of how cool my workmates can be.
Afterwards I popped over to my friend Hala’s gig, she does spoken word poetry and she’s pretty brilliant. Her company is pretty good too – Jahra, Logan, these guys are mean.
Today I did this kids cancer thing, pretty much we had to be paparazzi at the red carpet for an event and holey moley was it awkward to begin with. But then, the improv/ lol factor skills kicked in and it got pretty fun. I managed to rope Adam, Josiah and Hans into coming though without really telling them what it was going to entail… Oops. >;.<;

Barilla Dumpling

If you know me in person then you’ve probably had to put up with me going on and on about dumplings. Sorry guys. But see, it’s fairly reasoned in my opinion and pretty supported by many of you on the interwebs because it’s all because of Barilla Dumpling on Dominion Road.

Barilla Dumpling is one of those cult status food places, you mention it online and everyone nods in approval and it’s for good reason.

A couple of weeks ago I headed there with my Tell Tale Theatre friends, members old and new for a catch up. There were 10 of us which I was fairly excited about because it meant that I could try lots of things. After some umming and arring we ordered – for the dumplings it was mixed vegetables, pork and chives, pork and cashew and special pork, we also got some garlic bok choy, spicy beans, korean pancakes and garlic prawns.

The dumplings were amazing, as usual. They’re everything you want from a dumpling, soft, flavoursome, moist. The vegetables are definitely an extra must though. Generally I’m not the biggest fan of bok choy, but garlic bok choy has totally won me over. I could eat mountains of the stuff. The spicy beans are pretty special too. With a little bit of tempura crispyness and a faint hint of chilli they’re like the naughty treat of the meal. All of the Barilla veterans were determined that two plates were needed and they were right.

One of the best things about Barilla is that it’s incredible value for money. For roughly $10 give or take you get 20 dumplings. All up for us it was $10 each – for 80 dumplings, at least 20 prawns, three huge plates of vegetables and the pancake. We were stuffed and it was wonderful.

As per usual with this sort of place you also get endless amounts of free green tea and a generous supply of condiments.

Barilla Dumpling is possibly my favourite place to eat ever (until I meet a better dumpling place) and I’m a wee bit obsessed. Cross your fingers for me that I can wrangle a group to go with me this week!

You can find Barilla at 571 Dominion road, it’s open from 11:30 til midnight but it gets pretty crazy busy at night so you may want to book a table if you plan on eating in. You can call them on 09 638 8032.

It’s Friday, and today my cat Hero died. I don’t talk about her half as much as Griff because she’s old and antisocial but she was my baby since I was 4 and I loved her.
This definitely isn’t a thing that’s good but she was pretty cool in her youth. R.I.P Hero.

For the things that are good.

Last Sunday night I headed out with the crew to watch the Labyrinth at Britomart Country Club. It was awesome, good food, cheapish drinks, the labyrinth and good company. We also chatted to David Farrier which excited the journo kids heaps.
On Tuesday I went out for dinner with my drama friends. We went to Barilla and it was so good and we got to order so much food and it was amazing. I’ll be posting about it at some point.
Then on Wednesday I went to Nom*D with Josiah and Adam. It was awesome and I’ve already posted about it here. :)
This week was one of those weeks that was super super busy looking at the outset but then got way more manageable (phew), tonight Adam and I are going to see Beautiful Losers, can’t wait!
Also, today is Josiah’s Birthday! Happy Birthday dude! You’re the bomb!

Barilla Pasta Review and WIAW

Luckily I got in 3 miles on my treadmill yesterday morning because when I got home yesterday, I did not feel like working out. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with school and wanted to study. So I did! For the second day in a row I actually managed to take pictures of my meals! So this post can accurately be a ‘What I Ate Wednesday’!

After my treadmill session yesterday I did some experimenting in the kitchen and came up with this glorious creation: Oatmeal cake with chocolate frosting and blueberries. The chocolate frosting was my newest experiment and holy moly it did not disappoint. I will share the recipe asap.

After breakfast I drove to my outpatient clinic for the last time. I can’t believe this is my last week on psychiatry! Clinic was great as usual. Patients are so interesting. You might see schizophrenia 100 times but it looks completely different every time you see it.

Lunch was devoured in the car as I drove in circles looking for a parking spot: Spaghetti squash, veggies, tomato sauce, chicken, and a plum

After an afternoon at the hospital all I wanted was a sweet snack. So immediately upon arriving home I pulled out some greek yogurt and topped it with another flavor of my morning frosting creation: peanut butter!

The rest of the evening went like this: study study study, watch the Real Housewives of NYC, study, study, think to myself “I’m hungry- maybe I should workout and then have dinner? No… just dinner”

As I was pondering what to make for dinner, I went to check the mail and low and behold a package from Barilla Pasta! Dinner solved!

Barilla has made new pasta dishes you can prepare in 60 seconds! They graciously sent me some to try out and I was so excited to open the box and see 5 different flavors! All 5 are a pasta and a red sauce- some spicy, some with veggies, some with tomato basil. They don’t need to be refrigerated which is nice. What I really love about these is the fact that you don’t have to buy an entire jar of pasta sauce if you just want one meal! I often use 1/2 a jar and then it sits in the fridge for weeks and goes bad. Not anymore!

After microwaving the pasta, you take out the sauce tray and pour the sauce over the noodles- easy peasy. I decided to have 1/2 the pasta for dinner last night with 3 chicken meatballs, some broccoli, and cheese sprinkled on top. I’ll have the other 1/2 today.

Flavor wise, the noodles I chose were whole wheat and I thought they were great. The pasta sauce was very fruity- almost like tomato soup. But I didn’t dislike it. I am excited to try a few other flavors and let you know what I think! Nutrition wise, I think they look pretty good! The sauce has great ingredients and the pasta is quality Barilla pasta- I love the fact that you can get these in whole wheat. I think it would make a great side dish, or you could spice it up with veggies and a protein. The convenience can’t be beat- no pots of boiling water; I’m sold!

Post-pasta, it was time to study a bit more and turn off the lights. Today is actually a super busy day and so I have to get going!

Food Challenge Round 4: Cindy vs Pasta

Apparently, I have an “every other food” thing going on, because I failed pasta.

PASTA.

Pasta, as in the food I’ve eaten my entire life. I cannot remember a time I didn’t eat pasta (except these last few months). When all the other kids brought sandwiches to school, I brought pasta. I used to do this disgusting thing as a three year old where I’d pour my pasta in my thermos cap filled with milk. Every day. Because I ate pasta every day.

But apparently, I ate too much of it in this last year. Totally overdosed. Probably because as a kid my body was adapted to a one-food regimen, but at 25, when I could eat a ton more, too much pasta was a bad thing. When this whole thing started, I was eating pasta so regularly – I had it for lunch a few times a week (the other days, I ate bagels), and on days I didn’t have pasta for lunch, I had it for dinner. I was just so stressed and so tired and so not interested in cooking or putting in effort into anything that I guess I OD’ed on pasta. [this is maybe why people shouldn't work for companies run by "shrill narcissists."]

Anyway…

I self-challenged pasta yesterday. I had an errand to run in Beverly Hills at lunchtime, and since I promised my doctor I’d try the pasta during office hours not too far away, it seemed perfect to try it yesterday.

I had about four, maybe five, forkfuls. And then all of a sudden I got EXHAUSTED. Like all the wind was knocked out of me. I couldn’t think straight. Nothing swelled, I was breathing, but I just couldn’t move. I couldn’t open my mouth for the next forkful. I got extremely nauseated and just stopped. Took some Benadryl, drank a bunch of water, and drove back to work — at which point I sort of half vomited/half coughed while driving. You know what’s awesome? Vomiting into an old raisins bag in the trash pile of your car while stopped at a red light on Melrose. At least I hadn’t taken the trash out yet…

I left work early and slept the entire rest of the afternoon/evening. And today, after each meal (except breakfast which I had at the same time as Benadryl), I experienced crazy stomach pains, the usual throat swelling, and loss of voice.

The good news? This was the first stomach-oriented allergic reaction I’ve had! I’ve had almost every single kind of anaphylaxis now! Let’s keep it at this level, k? Because the only one left is blocked airwaves and that is sooooo not my thing.

I can’t believe I failed pasta. I also can’t believe I’m not as distressed about it as I expected. I can have corn quinoa pasta, brown rice quinoa pasta, rice noodles, homemade pasta…anyone have a good homemade pasta recipe? I think my lack of distress is related to denial, because as soon as I finish tournament one of food challenges, I want to test pasta again. I mean, 24 years of health has to count for something, right? Maybe it was cross-contamination of flax…or something.

It’s either denial, or I’ve gotten incredibly strong.

I’m guessing some kind of combination.

Bottom line — this probably means I can have onions when I try them on Tuesday! Because allergy testing totally works in patterns, right?

I never pay more than $0.50 for a box of pasta. Pasta is on sale regularly and you can easily match a sale with a coupon. If you catch the right sale anc coupon deal you can get pasta for free, but free isn’t always easy to come by so I hold myself to the $0.50 rule.

CVS has Barilla pasta on sale this week for $1.00 a box, several weeks ago Barilla issued a coupon for$1.00 off two boxes. I picked up 8 boxes of pasta and used 4 $1.00 off coupons in the end paying $4.00 or $0.50 per box plus tax.

Barilla, the world’s leading pasta brand, recently made its first leap to the microwavable aisle with its tasty launch—Barilla Microwaveable Meals. From the cabinet to the microwave to the table, the new single serving meals bring a little piece of Italy right to the home in just 60 seconds.

The portable 320 calorie meals are available in five varieties including Mezze Penne with Traditional Marinara Sauce, Mezze Penne with Tomato & Basil Sauce, Mezze Penne with Spicy Marinara Sauce, and in two whole grain options including Whole Grain Fusilli with Vegetable Marinara Sauce and Whole Grain Mezze Penne with Tomato & Basil Sauce (and for those of you pasta lovers, that’s five different pasta dishes for five work days, but who’s counting?)

Barilla’s new creation was developed with the busy on-the-go professional in mind.

“[The meals] are shelf stable so you can throw them into your bag on your way out the door, or keep a supply in your desk drawer,” said Giannella Alvarez, president of Barilla America in a press release.

With the April 5^th product announcement on the brand’s Facebook page, Barilla invited the first 1,000 users to register for a free sample of the microwaveable meals to be sent to their home. The samples were gone almost as soon as the offer was posted. Social media engagement didn’t stop there for the new all-natural meals; Twitter followers were encouraged to use the hashtag #BarillaIn60 to share their thoughts on the new product.

Barilla is no amateur when it comes to product launching. The top pasta brand invited editors from some of the most well-known New York City publications to test the new microwaveable meals, and captured the entire event on video—which they of course included on their YouTub e channel.

Effective campaign initiatives aside, what makes these microwavable meals so different from the rest? For starters: simplicity. The meals are shelf stable and packed with quality ingredients minus the preservatives, not to mention they’re incredibly convenient. It’s easy products like this that consumers have come to expect, and as long as Barilla keeps launching them, they’ll keep holding onto that #1 spot.

Trader Joe's High-Fiber Spaghetti

Barilla pasta is my go-to brand, but I prefer using Trader Joe’s dry pasta. It’s cheaper, holds sauce better, cooks evenly to Al Dente and is starchier than most brands. It just seems like a better quality product. During our last trip to Trader Joe’s I picked up a bag of high-fiber spaghetti, a new product on the shelves at the national chain.

Billed as having three times the fiber as regular pasta, the high-fiber variety has 6 grams of fiber per 2 oz. serving, or 25 percent of your recommended daily intake. I used it as the base for barbecue spaghetti, which uses pulled pork, barbecue sauce and tomatoes as a sauce. For review purposes, we’ll use the Pasta Week system from this spring.

THE TRADER JOE’S HIGH-FIBER PASTA FILE

RAW FLAVOR: Very much like everyday dry pasta. No changes to the flavor profile were evident.

STRAIGHT FROM THE POT: Again, it tasted like a bowl of pasta made from semolina flour.

DID THE WIFE APPROVE?: “One pound has how much fiber? We should skip the gummies tonight.”

VALUE: $1.49 per pound.
