New York’s Fifth Avenue is the shopping mecca of the world, famous for its collection of high

New York’s Fifth Avenue is the shopping mecca of the world, famous for its collection of high end retail stores. During the holiday season, stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and others attract shoppers into their stores with extravagant holiday window displays.

Some of the highlights can be seen in nymag.com’s “Tis the Season for Holiday Windows” slideshow.

Our favorites are:

Barneys New York’s Saturday Night Live’s 35th anniversary inspired windows with papier-mâché sculptures of Roseanne and Tina Fey as Sarah Palin among others. Andy Samberg, Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, and Lorne Michaels from SNL were on hand for the window unveiling.

Saks Fifth Avenue’s PC lounge inside the New York flagship store. The lounge will feature products running Microsoft’s new Windows 7 operating system and is highlighted by several window displays with interactive monitors powered by Microsoft. Shoppers can tweet messages with #holidaywindows tag which will appear in the display.

Churchill has temporary luxury rental apartments available in Midtown. Take a stroll down Fifth Avenue and do a little window shopping when you are in New York for the holidays.

… is still rising. Here (thanks Decorno).

Simon Doonan will be decking the white house halls for the holidays! The creative director for Barney’s and holiday window wow factor guru (and Jonathan Adler’s husband) will definitely add a little funk to the holiday decor. Some of his previous work below:

(pictures here)

So what do you think? It seems like a kind of wild decision to me. One I like, but am surprised by. I’m having a hard time finding the photos I’m looking for. His holiday windows frequently have a political bent and are usually over the top, but very creative. I guess it’s a good thing he got the “hippie holidays” out of his system. That likely wouldn’t go over well in DC.

Origin Assured is an initiative that approves retailers and manufacturers coming from a country where welfare regulations or standards governing fur production are in force.

Their recent campaign is supported by renowned fashion designers. Oscar de la Renta said: “Buying Origin Assured furs removes a lot of questions for the customer. It allows her to buy fur with confidence.” Karl Lagerfeld adds: “An Origin Assured fur is timeless and fashionable like a ready-to-wear piece. The woman’s sense of style is enhanced by beautiful materials.” The campaign is also supported by Roberto Cavalli and John Galliano.

The question if wearing fur is ethical or not has been a controversy since decades between the fashion industry and organizations such as PETA.
My question is: If wearing fur is unethical wouldn’t eating meat, fish and wearing leather be as unethical as wearing fur? A poll sponsored by the Vegetarian Resource Group showed that only 2.5% of the US population can be considered vegetarian. Considering the price points for fur fashion products in department stores such as Barney’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue it is crystal clear that the meat and fish consumption outnumbers the purchase of fur products significantly.

No Junk!” exclusive line for Barneys. With the current world economy, this is a more practical and accessible take on men’s fashion, heck they all look tailored for my boy-ish frame, count me in.

____________

“Really, it’s about tapping into Barneys’ heritage. What I remember of Barneys—at least, from being a little shit growing up in Ohio, and having a pretty skewed view of New York—was the sort of “power uniform” or Wall Street uniform that they really created in the eighties. They elevated taste levels in New York among men in the most masculine sort of way possible. You know, it wasn’t really about fashion; it was this other ideal that they created. It was also very European, because Barneys’ heritage is about bringing insane designer brands to the States that had never been here before: From Prada to Margiela to all the Japanese designers, the Antwerp designers, they were there first. Going back even further, when they first started, Barneys was still about designer brands, but it was very schmatta,[below, the inspiration for No Bunk! No Junk!]. The idea was like, to combine these two elements and give it a Band of Outsiders spin—something that’s not Euro, not too slick…” -Scott Sternberg (GQ interview)

I am so looking forward to thanksgiving in Los Angeles. I want to go to all my favorite places. And here they are: Breakfast at the counter at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Joan’s on Third for lunch. Douglas Fir for shoes. Barney’s for old times sake. American Rag for fun. Fred Segals for sightings. Melrose for vintage t-shirts. Blackman Cruz to look with my mouth open. Palisades Tennis Center for some tennis. Patrick’s Roadhouse for a burger. Malibu for some cool. Arclight for movies, Booksoup for browsing, Venice Beach for people watching and Brentwood to feel like a local. Cannot wait for blue skies and ocean breezes and palm trees and cool californian people. I think Larry David has done for L.A. what Woody Allen did for NY. Larry’s made it a cool place to live. Oh man, can’t wait to get there. Have a swim, a massage, some chill-time, good food, drive around singing karaoke in the car with son. Lovely. England can start to feel like a prison, on an island.

Scott Sternberg won the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year for good reason, because he is a boss. Band of Outsiders is one of the best labels out, and their new collection made exclusively for Barneys shows exactly why. The “No Bunk! No Junk!” collection is awesome because it’s almost more about what Band of Outsiders is not, rather than what they are. They are known for their preppy-hipster aesthetic, so when Sternberg decided to use only black and white and do a take on power dressing, we just sat there and said, “Once again, you’re a boss.” Obviously this collection doesn’t look like a Tom Ford creation, but how often have you seen a guy go out on a limb like this? The collection does stay consistent with the Band of Outsiders aesthetic with smart decisions like using corduroy on a black suit rather than a traditional wool. As Sterberg describes it, “Very American–with the proportions that make fat guys hate me.” You can find the No Bunk! No Junk! collection at Barney’s New York.

When it comes to fashion, I usually opt for understatement. I like clothes that whisper rather than shout. However, every now and then, I fall in love with an item that speaks a little more loudly than what I am accustomed to, which deviates slightly from my normal preferences. This season, the odd object of my affection is none other than that much lambasted symbol of female domesticity, the apron.

Left and middle: Comme des Garçons F/W 2009, Right: Alexander McQueen F/W 2009

I actually prefer Rei Kawakubo’s version: the formality of the wool pinstripe fabric contrasts nicely with the idea of the apron as work wear. Plus, the McQueen version is a little too “Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York” for me.

I think what attracts me to the apron is that it introduces a very androgynous silhouette. From the front, it actually looks like a dress–a sort of pinafore for men. However, the utilitarian detailing–studs, pockets, zippers–gives it an edge and prevents it from looking a little too, well, quaint.

Although it’ll prove to be an interesting addition to any wardrobe–think of the layering possibilities–there is one huge setback: the price. P21,000++ for a wool apron (or P100,000++ for a leather one)? Only if Santa decides that I’ve been a really good boy this year and gives me one.

Now that our wedding is officially complete and every last item on my checklist has been crossed off

Now that our wedding is officially complete and every last item on my checklist has been crossed off, except thank you notes of course, I can happily share some of the great experiences and worthy partners we encountered along the way. Some fashion related, some travel recommendations and even some specific wedding vendors, but naturally I’ll kick off with one of my favorite finds that just happens to be clothes related!

Long before the wedding, even before the engagement, we knew that my husband would not be saying his vows in a tuxedo, or anything that resembled a black suit. There was no clear vision and no long-awaited outfit to obtain. There was just a feeling that we had to seek out in the form of mensware. Our wedding style was informal but sophisticated and fun and we requested that our guests come dressed in natty attire which funnily threw everyone for a loop. We weren’t sure where to begin but in New York City the options are overwhelming, yet limited at the same time. There was a loose budget that got slightly more refined each shopping trip as our mouths simply dropped at price tags; it’s torture to have expensive taste! We visited the obvious department stores like Saks and Barney’s and intimate brand boutiques like Brunello Cucinelli and Hugo Boss. He actually purchased a back-up suit at the weekly sample sale held inside Chelsea Market from Hickey. The price was unbeatable, $350 for a blazer and pants that fit like a glove, but it was charcoal gray with faint pin stripes that had to be seriously snazzed up to avoid looking like a corporate finance manager or another attendee at the wedding.

Whereas a girl has to purchase a wedding dress months in advance, men have the luxury of waiting a little longer to find their coveted attire, and my husband certainly pushed the limit by waiting until about 5 weeks before the wedding to really take this shopping seriously. After a lot of frustrated browsing and being challenged to find a complete outfit to look like some of the swipe we pulled from men’s magazines, without spending $6,000, we finally decided to give one last store a try, going out on a limb that this would be the place to find one of the most important suit purchases.

My husband has always been fascinated by the models in the windows at the Paul Stuart store on Madison Avenue. Each one dressed like a proper gentleman who appear to have somewhere impressive to go while dazzling passerbys with their classic ensembles full of color, pattern and texture. A university English professor or old world banking man are the types of men I pictured as regular customers. I introduced my husband to his first Paul Stuart item when I surprised him with a pocket square for his birthday years ago; it was representative of a little taste of the style he aspired to when he had a reason to dress like that everyday.

We had little confidence that Paul Stuart was the right store for this particular occasion, but we were running out of time and disappointed in everything we had seen so far. Little did we know that his aspirational brand would solve all of our shopping needs beyond expectation. If you have never been inside the Paul Stuart store, you would be shocked to realize its size and healthy inventory once you see that it takes up half of the block with 3 levels above ground to house men’s women’s, accessories, shoes, outerwear, fitting rooms and personal tailors. Cashmere, wool, leather and silk fill the shelves and racks and every color has it’s place to paint a picture of pure wardrobe delight.

The goal was to find an outfit that fit my husband’s style and personality, matched the mood of our reception and made him stand out from a church full of men in black, gray and navy suits. I say outfit because we realized that a well styled ensemble of blazer, pants, shirt, tie, pocket square could be just as dapper as a well fitting 3-piece pinstripe suit and we were open to pushing the boundaries of ordinary. We were fortunate to fall into the hands of an amazing sales person who ended up spending the next 2.5 hours dressing my husband from head to toe.

The personal attention and trial and error experience of shopping, in what felt like a rich man’s home, resulted in an outfit hard to describe other than perfect for my husband-to-be and anyone who saw it knew that only he could get away with such flare at his own wedding. With the help of Manolo Costa, Manager of the new Phineas Cole collection from Paul Stuart, we assembled piece-by-piece a colorful, yet tasteful combination of earthy colored wool of blues and greens and complemented by a contrasting magenta to top off the cool hued look. We could not have done it without him and his patience and eye for style left a great impression.

The blazer and pants were fitted immediately by the in-house expert tailors using white chalk, measuring tape and other tools unfamiliar in the world of alterations. We left the store with only a pair of shoes left to purchase and we even considered buying those there as well. It’s not often that you buy an entire 6-piece outfit from the same brand and wear them together all at the same time. But at establishments like Paul Stuart, I have a feeling this kind of thing happens all too often.

So in the future, if you are looking to dress like an English gentleman or just want to improve your overall appearance with some classic yet distinguished mensware, I suggest an introductory pitstop at Paul Stuart and Phineas Cole. Phineas Cole is the latest collection that appeals to a more modern man who prefers a more streamlined, European look rather than the traditional, American cut. I promise you will get treated better than at most stores, especially if you can embrace the art of being an expert retail salesmen and let them bestow their knowledge and craft unto you to your benefit .

Continuing on with the “All Black Everything” Theme we have been seeing lately Nixon teams up with Barney’s to bring us this cool series of Limited Edition Watches for the 2009 Holliday Season. I must admit these watches are kind of classy and a bit different from what we are used to seeing from Nixon. It’s nice to see some of these brands take a more “grown up” approach to some of their designs. & Dont worry theyre actually quite affordable with the price ranges of the watches ranging from $165 and up. Check out some of our favorite pieces of the collection after the JUMP!

As I mentioned recently on Twitter, I picked up the gray sweater above this weekend at Kenneth Cole.

As I mentioned recently on Twitter, I picked up the gray sweater above this weekend at Kenneth Cole.

I think I have a problem: It is my 14th gray sweater.

This becomes especially troublesome when I know that in my last batch of castaway clothing that went to charity, there were at least three more. You know how Inuits were supposed to have about a hundred words for “snow” (which is actually a myth)? I think I’m like that with gray sweaters: Each of mine is distinctly different.

Well, except one.

I picked up this one (click on any thumbnail to enlarge) at Armani Exchange on my recent trip to Hawaii. It was one of the few items in the store that wasn’t emblazoned with some form of A/X logo. It has a cool checkerboard effect in the knit pattern, and an interesting neckline. (Wear with: Blue patterned dress shirt, dark gray trousers. Or maybe even navy ones.)

This is a super lightweight “luxury blend” from Banana Republic, where I suspect I picked up the V-neck sweater habit. (Right now the guy on the opening page of the BR website is wearing a … gray sweater. Curses!) I think I read somewhere that a V-neck collar makes your neck look longer — which is something I don’t actually need, since I’m already sort of giraffe-y to start with — but I also think they look a little more professional than crew-necks. (Wear with: fine-gauge tee, since anything stiffer leaves weird marks through sweater, and dark-wash jeans.)

My Charlie Brown sweater! I went through a phase awhile back where I ended up with a lot of shirts or sweatshirts that had horizontal lines across the chest — I bought them, Mr. Brooks and CPOS brought me one back when they visited Germany — and this is the only survivor. (I think the design is supposed to make your pecs look bigger. I’ll take all the help I can get.) This all-cotton ribbed one is by Pure Stuff, and I picked it up at Last Chance. It’s a total weekend sweater. (Wear with: jeans.)

Despite what I mentioned in #2 up there, I don’t have a moratorium on crewnecks: This 100% cotton crewneck from Gap is a good casual-Friday type of sweater. It looks a lot luxe than it really is, so it’s nice and comfortable. (Wear with: a crew-neck T-shirt, beat-up khakis.)

This one is — wait for it — reversible! This would be one of my favorites except it’s a snug fit, so I have to stretch it out a bit lest it look like I’m trying to emulate Scottsdale douchebags. I don’t think I’ve ever worn the light side out — it’s always been the darker one. (Wear with: T-shirt that can be tucked in to jeans with a higher waist — it’s as short as it is snug, and without the right pants it could veer into “crop top” category. And, as such, fit for weekends only.)

I bought this at the men’s Topshop store — yes, it’s called Topman — during this summer’s trip to New York, but haven’t worn it yet. Mostly because it has this built-in scarf detail that I haven’t quite figured out how to arrange without looking … really fey. Also, because I tossed it in with all the stuff from Ben Sherman, it’s been kind of squished and needs a steam to relax the wrinkles. (Wear with: “Blue Steel” expression, maybe?)

One of my favorites! A heavy-cotton shawl-collar sweater from J. Crew. Lately I have an issue with that store, because I feel like they’re trying to reposition themselves as more upscale than what we expect them to be — as if their competition is Nordstrom and not, say, Banana Republic. $128 for a denim utility shirt? $240 for a Japanese selvage denim utility shirt? No wonder your store numbers are down. Give me some freaking classy basics for a only slightly unreasonable price. Sorry. Getting off my soapbox now. (Wear with: colored tee.)

I, uh, haven’t taken this one out of the plastic bag yet. Awhile back, Gap was running this online special with a ludicrously low price for cotton V-neck sweaters. So I picked up three different colors. But it was mid-July, so I stored them. This one is lighter than the photo has made it look — almost like a heather. (Wear with: black button-down, indigo jeans or black moleskin trousers.)

This is the only sweatshirt I’m counting among the contenders — when I did my tally, I left out any upscale hoodies and the like. I’ve had this cotton fleece V-neck by Polo Sport for years. It’s a castoff from my ex — well, I don’t think I can technically refer to it as a “castoff” when what really happened is I just started wearing it so often that it ended up being “mine” instead of “his.” (Wear with: T-shirt, track pants.)

This is the granddaddy of my sweaters – I have had this since college. In fact, the day I was photographed for the newspaper wearing approximately 75 layers (chambray shirt and purple henley I had purchased at JC Penney with gift card my aunt had given me as high school graduation present, atop white T-shirt, all tucked into stone-washed jeans), I had actually worn all of that PLUS THIS SWEATER (which I believe was a Jay Jacobs purchase), because I was sick and showed up to work wearing all of that because I was cold. (That also explains why I didn’t have a belt for the photo.) Anyway, this is my designated bad mood/under the weater sweater. If you see me wearing it, run. (Wear with: scowl, fever.)

This one makes me wish I lived somewhere it was cooler, more often. (In temperature, of course). It’s a silk and angora mock-neck that I picked up at Last Chance — I used to remember the brand name but it has slipped my mind now. I want to say it is six letters, and it starts with C-U, but a C is the only letter on the label. Anyway, super soft and I love it. (Wear with: dark tee underneath as liner — it’s a loose knit! — and light gray trousers.)

This lambswool/cashmere V-neck from Banana Republic also has a collar, so there’s extra visual detail to set it apart. It’ is, however, a tightly knit lambswool/cashmere sweater, so it’s very warm: I learned this at work one day, when I was like, “Is it 90 degrees in here or something?” while flapping the bottom of the sweater open to get cool air circulating around. (Wear with: Crisp white dress shirt, dark jeans or trousers.)

This sweater makes me a little sad — so much potential wasted! I love the charcoal color, the burled threads, the vertical stripes … I bought it at Banana Republic right when I moved to Colorado and visited my brother in Denver. It’s 50% wool, and it’s a turtleneck, and when I wear it, my neck itches like crazy. Also, the store only had a large, so the fit isn’t the most flattering — it’s bigger and boxier than is best. (Wear with: jeans, for that jaunty Irish sailor back from the sea effect.)

Oh, and that one up top? I spent Sunday morning with friends checking out the new Barneys, where I saw beautiful trousers by Nom de Guerre and watches by Nixon … and I couldn’t afford to buy a thing. Then, rather than grabbing a bite at Pita Jungle, we ended up eating a $22 lunch at Fred’s … inside Barneys. Followed by one of my friends picking up his watch at Cartier, then another one getting a belt at Louis Vuitton. By this time, I had turned into “the guy who sits down somewhere and texts, while everyone else oohs and aahs over merchandise.” I seriously hated walking the mall that day. Then someone wanted to go to Kenneth Cole to look at boots, and on the back-wall mannequin I saw a gray sweater. It had a zipper front, and a cool collar, and all felt right with the world again. (Wear with: T-shirt, different conglomeration of friends.)
