Marzo 1995

Andy Cole se convirtió en el gran protagonista de la mayor goleada de la historia de la Premier League. El delantero anotó cinco goles en un encuentro en el que también vieron puerta Mark Hughes, en dos ocasiones, Paul Ince y Roy Keane. Los ‘Red Devils’ acabaron la temporada en segunda posición, por detrás del Blackburn Rovers, y el Ipswich cerró la tabla.

Septiembre 1999

Alan Shearer no quiso ser menos que Andy Cole y también marcó cinco goles (dos de penalty) en el roto de las ‘Hurracas’ al Sheffield Wednesday. Un avance de lo que sería la temporada para los ‘Blades’, que perdieron la categoría, mientras que los de Bobby Robson cerraron la campaña en la zona media. Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer y Gary Speed también participaron activamente de la goleada.

Nottingham Forest 1 – Manchester United 8

El United ha protagonizado el mayor triunfo de la historia de la Premier en casa y a domicilio. Los de Alex Ferguson pasaron por encima del Nottingham Forest en el mismísimo City Ground con un Ole Gunnar Solskjaer que marcó cuatro goles saliendo desde el banquillo en sustitución de Dwight Yorke en el minuto 72’. ‘El Asesino Con Cara de Niño’ anotó sus tantos en poco más de diez minutos. Para los ‘Red Devils’ también mojaron por partida doble el de Trinidad y Tobago y Andy Cole.

Mayo 2005

En una memorable noche de Dennis Bergkamp, los ‘Gunners’ pasaron por encima del Everton en el viejo Highbury. El holandés marcó el sexto en una oda al fútbol colectivo en la que participaron Robin Van Persie (8’), Robert Pires (12’ y 50’), Patrick Vieira (37’), Edu (70’) y Mathieu Flamini (85’).

Noviembre 1995

El campeón de 1995 finalizó la temporada en la séptima plaza pero regaló a sus aficionados otra goleada histórica de la mano de Alan Shearer, que enchufó un hat-trick. Lars Bohinen (2), Mike Newell y Graeme Le Saux también superaron la meta del ‘Forest’.

Octubre 1997

Otro recital de fútbol de los ‘Red Devils’ con hat-trick de Andy Cole y goles de Ryan Giggs (2), Paul Scholes y Karel Poborsky. El United cerró la temporada a un punto del Arsenal y los ‘Tykes’ en segunda.

Si un año antes fue Bergkamp, ante el ‘Boro’ el protagonista de la goleada del Arsenal fue Thierry Henry. El galo marcó tres tantos en una fiesta que también tuvo como invitados a Philippe Senderos, Robert Pires, Gilberto Silva y Aleksandr Hleb.

There should be plenty of goals in this one. Cardiff have scored 10 goals in their last 3 away fixtures, including a 3-2 reverse in the derby against Swansea while their hosts have scored and conceded with regular occurence at Oakwell. Barnsley are of course a much improved side under Mark Robins and they can count a home win against West Brom as a notable scalp. I’m convinced the Tykes will be a mid-table side this season and should stay clear of the relegation zone as they create plenty of opportunities home and away. Meanwhile in Cardiff it will have been a long two weeks. The loss at Swansea was preceeded by a lacklustre display at home to Forest and the team will be desperate to get back on track. The break might just have allowed Dave Jones men to re-group and start another push towards automatic promotion. They welcome back top goalscorers Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham for a fixture where Cardiff are unbeaten in 8 games, winning 6. It could be the case that the Bluebirds might feel the extra pressure in their brand new stadium so a trip to Oakwell might be just what they need.

Middlesborough Vs Forest

Forests away record reads like this, played 8, won 2, drawn 6. Surely this run cant go on? There are reasons to think it might do this weekend against an out of sorts Middlesborough side. Gordon Strachan has resided over 2 one nil defeats since he took over and its possible he has spent the last two weeks in training making sure Boro’ become harder to beat, keeping a clean sheet will no doubt be a priority on Saturday. I always think part of the problem is the lack of atmosphere at the Riverside, Boro’s away record suggests they enjoy playing away from home where they have scored over twice as many as they have at home. Forest on the other hand are a side on the up. Billy Davies knows this league inside out and there will be no side better prepared than a Forest team who have drawn their last 5 games at Middlesborough. Unbelievably 9 of the last 12 matches between these two have ended honours even so prices around the 12/5 mark might represent some value. If this game was played 2 weeks ago I would be keen on Forest to go and get all three points but the break might just have allowed Middlesborough to get their act  together to get a draw.

It has been reported today that young striker Michael Coulson has returned to BarnsleyFC  after scoring once in five outings on loan at Blue Square Premier side Chester City.  The Deva Stadium club wanted to keep the player for another month but couldn’t find the finances to pay the players’ wages.

As reported over the weekend, City have been handed a further extension by the games’ governing bodies, as all parties seek a solution to the Deva Stadium outfit’s outstanding football creditors.

City were originally instructed to settle all their outstanding debts on or before October 26. This deadline was extended until yesterday by the Conference. However, the club have now been given an extra fortnight to sort the matter out and avoid possible expulsion from the Blue Square Conference.

A statement issued today by the Football Conference said: “In relation to matters appertaining to Chester City FC and their obligations to meet requirments to pay football creditors, due to be met no later than today, Monday, 16th November 2009.

“On Thursday, 12th November, 2009, notification was received from the Board of the Football League that they required further time to enable them to seek and take legal advice on the award and distribution of possible payments to Chester City FC from monies held by the Football League Ltd.

“As a consequence of this request, the Football Conference has agreed, that in the interests of the competition as a whole, to extend the date of compliance to Monday, 30th November 2009 for Chester City FC to fully comply with the financial payments ordered against them.

“The Board re-iterate their previous statement that any failure to make such payments in full by this date will lead to a move to call a meeting of member clubs to consider the club’s expulsion from membership in accordance with the rules of the Football Conference”.

It is understood that Chester are endeavouring to utilise monies from their discretionary Football League Parachute payment, due following the club’s relegation last season to pay off their creditors.

A transfer embargo still hangs over the club. However, if they can find the cash, Chester will be allowed to extend the temporary loan signings of defender Jonathan Flynn from Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley midfield player Michael Coulson, both players’ initial one-month loan deals finish this week.

Danny Welbeck e Michael Owen hanno ammesso che i Reds avrebbero potuto giocare meglio contro il Barnsley – in un incontro che rischiava di diventare pericoloso per i campioni.

Ha detto Owen: “Non abbiamo giocato bene quanto avremmo potuto, soprattutto nel primo tempo, quando siamo stati così così. Ma siamo contenti di essere passati.”
“Avremmo dovuto far circolare di più la palla,” ha aggiunto Welbeck, “ma abbiamo ugualmente controllato la partita, nella ripresa. I giovani hanno fatto bene e i giocatori più esperti li hanno molto aiutati.”

Welbeck ha ringraziato in particolare Anderson, che gli ha fornito l’assist per il suo gol, arrivato presto. “Anderson ha detto che avrebbe calciato sul primo palo così io ho pensato di poterci arrivare. L’area era libera quindi mi sono buttato e ci ho messo la testa.”

Owen ha raddoppiato per lo United dopo l’intervallo e ha ammesso che la sua rete potrebbe influire sulla valutazione della sua prestazione. “E’ così che mi giudica la gente, sfortunatamente,” ha sospirato.
“Sono partito dall’inizio nell’incontro col Bolton, abbiamo vinto 2-1 e quando sono uscito ero contento. Ho pensato di aver giocato molto bene anche se non avevo segnato. Quando ho letto i giornali, il giorno dopo, ho visto che mi avevano dato voti bassissimi! Oggi ho giocato nella media ma ho segnato, quindi forse mi prenderò un bel sette.”

Otto, invece, potrebbe essere la cifra che ha in mente Welbeck adesso che i Reds sono fra gli ultimi otto della competizione che l’anno scorso hanno vinto a Wembley. “E’ bellissimo andare avanti nelle Coppe. Non vedo l’ora di giocare i quarti, come tutti, e faremo del nostro meglio.”

La FA Cup, que todavía no ha anunciado las sanciones por los altercados del West Ham – Millwall de hace varias semanas, anunció que también investigará lo ocurrido durante el partido del Carling Cup del pasado martes en el que el Manchester United se impuso al Barnsley 0-2. Por otro lado, la policía también ha comunicado que impedirá el acceso a los estadios a los hinchas detenidos y a los que sean identificados a través de los sistemas de seguridad.

Carling Cup holders Manchester United booked a quarter-final place thanks to a comfortable 2-0 victory at Barnsley.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes from United’s defeat by Liverpool on Sunday and they went ahead when Anderson’s corner was headed in by Danny Welbeck.

Barnsley went close when Daniel Bogdanovic hit the post, but Michael Owen’s expert finish doubled the lead.

Gary Neville was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Adam Hammill, but Barnsley could find no way through.

They had enough chances to get back on level terms, but some profligate finishing cost them any chance of a famous upset at Oakwell.

The match was marred by crowd trouble and South Yorkshire police said 10 fans were arrested.

Eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for about 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Stewards on the pitch also had objects thrown at them.

The game itself was the perfect opportunity for Ferguson to give some of his senior players who have not been playing regularly in the first team some much-needed competitive football.

Neville and Wes Brown came into the defence, Anderson was brought into the midfield and Owen started only his fifth game for the club, while Gabriel Obertan made his first start since a £3m summer move from Bordeaux.

United’s England Under-20 goalkeeper Ben Amos has joined Peterborough United on a one-month emergency loan deal.

With regular first-choice ‘keeper Joe Lewis suspended after a red card in the Posh’s Carling Cup defeat to Blackburn Rovers midweek, boss Darren Ferguson has turned to his father for reinforcement, choosing to bring in Amos to start this weekend’s home Championship clash with Barnsley rather than relying on youngster James McKeown.

Amos is likely to be relegated to a bench role when Lewis returns from his one-game ban, but a first spell out on loan and a month of experience as part of a senior setup will still be very useful experience for the 19 year-old, whose sole senior appearance thus far came for the Reds against Middlesbrough in last season’s Carling Cup.
