Rundāle Palace is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Europe, it is situated at Pilsrundāle, 12 km west of Bauska, in Latvia. Located about 80 KM from the capital Riga, Rundāle Palace is an architechtural pearl created by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli designer of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Built as the summer residence of the Duke of Courland Ernst Johann Biron the opulent palace was completed in two stages from 1736 to 1740 and 1763 to 1768.

Rastrelli was invited to design the palace by Biron, a favourite of Russian Empress Czarina Anna Ivanovna. The sudden death of the Empress in 1740 resulted in Biron falling out of favor and being banished to Siberia for 23 years. Biron was eventually pardoned and returned to finish his project, the Palace finally reaching completion in 1768. The resulting masterpiece is a magnificent example of Baroque style incorporating elements of classicism.

After Latvia was absorbed by the Russian Empire in 1795 Catherine the Great gave Rundāle Palace to her lover Count Zubov as a gift. His young Widow, Thekla Walentinowicz remarried Count Shuvalov, bringing the Palace into the stewardship of the Shuvalov family. Rundāle Palace remained in the Shuvalov family until 1920 when it was taken over by the Republic of Latvia as a part of agrarian reform. The palace was in a rundown state but a lengthy restoration process that is still going on today has returned much of Rundāle Palace to its former grandeur. Visitors are able to tour the museum that was opened at the site in 1972 and several of the grand rooms are open to the public including many in the eastern block including the Room of Roses and the Duke’s Bedroom. In 2004, banqueting rooms and chambers in the western wing were opened. The palace is ringed by a canal, gardens and a hunting park.

From Jindrichuv Hradec you can continue on Vienna-Prague Greenway via Pluhův Žďár and châteaux Červe

From Jindrichuv Hradec you can continue on Vienna-Prague Greenway via Pluhův Žďár and châteaux Červená Lhota to Tabor, or you can take wonderful detour via Southern Bohemia on Rozmberk Heritage Greenway and connect to Salzburg – Prague Greenway.

To cycle via the Rozmberk Heritage Greenway you pass through Trebon Region, locally called Třeboňsko, an area of countless fish ponds, largest of which are Svet and Rozumberk ponds, with deep-rooted tradition of freshwater fish farming dating back to middle ages. This is also a region of scenic forests and meadows, in a way, Bohemia’s Lake District.

Trebon town was a medieval stronghold with fortification walls and moat is still largely intact. Among worthwhile sites to visit while in Trebon is the tomb of the Schwarzenberk family and the Trebon renaissance châteaux.

You may decide not to cycle north to Jindrichuv Hradec once in Nova Bystrice and take a shorter route to Nove Hrady skirting the northernmost point of Austria. The route offers a possibility to overnight at a well-known Hotel Perslak with fine panorama of surrounding countryside. From here the bike trail continues skirting the border passing through deep woods on its way to Chlum u Třeboně, a small town with a nice baroque pilgrimage church and a châteaux.

The ultimate destination for the day is town of Nove Hrady, a gateway to the mountainous border of Southern Bohemia of the same name. The town has a prominent gothic castle, encircled by an impressive moat. It was built in late 1200 to protect one of the trade routes that connected Austria with Prague. Burnt to the ground in 15th century, even destroyed by earthquake two centuries later, it was conquered by Karel Bonaventura Buquoy, Holy Roman Emperor Matthias’ general sent to quell the rebellion of the Bohemian aristocracy in 1618, war that became known as the Thirty Years’ War and which eventually installed the 300-year rule of the Habsburgs on the Czech lands. The Nove Hrady castle remained in the hands of the Buquoy’s descendants until 1945. Today it is well-maintained and in the ownership of the state.

Nove Hrady also has a striking renaissance town hall and a late gothic Church of St. Peter and Paul that was rebuilt in later part of 1600 and furnished with a remarkable baroque altar. On the outskirts of town is a wonderful nature reserve of Terčino Údolí, Theresa’s Valley. Cycling though the reserve is a scenic alternative to the main road and the trail takes you to a renovated medieval fortress of Cuknštejn on the way out of town toward Horni Stropnice.

Eager to raise children who hate classical music? Try these simple steps: Assume they’ll never like

Eager to raise children who hate classical music? Try these simple steps: Assume they’ll never like it. Never take them to a classical music concert. Talk about how classical music is boring. Assure they never hear you enjoying a classical piece of music. This rule pretty much follows for all of parenting. If you tell a kid to hate something, work extra hard to hate it yourself and never give your kid the opportunity to love it, your kid will probably hate it.

If you want to raise a child who appreciates, and maybe even loves (or plays) classical music, take him or her early and often to see and hear it performed. My fingers just did all the walking for you, so cut the excuses, read this list, and get out there and give your kids some credit. I think they’ll surprise you. And they might just find something to love for a lifetime.

First, a collection of musical adventures from a venue that never fails to impress with the diversity of its offerings—the Mesa Arts Center. They’ll host a Holiday Arts & Music Festival with free admission and free parking on Dec. 12th and 13th. The event includes art by nearly 100 artists in 13 mediums, live entertainment, kids’ activities and more.

Other holiday happenings with a musical bent coming to the MAC include: Leahy Family Christmas (Celtic Canadian sibling singers) on Dec. 5th. Welk Stars (as in Lawrence Welk) Christmas Reunion on Dec. 6th. American Stars in Concert For the Holidays (surprise mix of American Idol top ten finalists) on Dec. 12th. Salt River Brass Concert (holiday pops) on Dec. 13th. You’re All I Want for Christmas (Christmas variety show with sing-a-longs) on Dec. 16th and 18th. Dave Koz and Friends (A Smooth Jazz Christmas) on Dec. 22nd. There’s more, but the brevity of blogging prevents me from listing everything here, so check their website for the full scoop.

I grew up listening with my mother to the music of the Boston Pops, and enjoyed a full circle moment when Lizabeth and I went to a Boston Pops concert together many years ago (she’s still wearing the souvenir t-shirt). Consider starting a new holiday tradition with one (or more) of these classical music concerts…

The Tempe Symphony Orchestra presents their annual Holiday Concert at McClintock High School at 7:30pm on Monday, Nov. 30th. (It’s free!) The ASU Symphony Orchestra and Choral Unions present their Holiday Concert (including works from Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Messiah) at ASU Gammage in Tempe on Dec. 6th from 2:30-4pm.

The Phoenix Symphony offers a rich musical menu during the holiday season—with many performances held on multiple dates—so their website is well worth a visit. Your choices this season include Holiday Express! (Dec. 2nd-4th), Holiday Pops (Dec. 4th-6th), Family Holiday Pops (Dec. 5th), Candlelight Messiah (starting Dec. 9th), Handel’s Messiah Sing-a-Long (Dec. 6th at 7:30pm) and a New Year’s Eve concert complete with complimentary champagne (Dec. 31st at 7pm).

I recall many a concert with a very young Lizabeth napping on my shoulder during the second half. It beats having your child fall asleep to the television or an iPod. The early exposure to classical music left Lizabeth eager to try violin lessons, leading to a decade of violin study and all the discipline and musicality that comes with it. I’ll never regret making that investment in concert tickets rather than video games or DVDs.

If musical theatre is your thing, join fellow Broadway buffs at Phoenix Theatre Dec. 18th or 19th for Holiday Harmony featuring Broadway Baritones singing holiday and Broadway tunes. Among them will be Douglas Webster, who brought the house down during Phoenix Theatre’s passionate yet pristine production of Les Miserables last season. I suspect that tickets for this baby will be going fast.

In the mood for a bit of dinner theater? Check out the Singing Cowboy Christmas (with Pioneer Pepper and the Sunset Pioneers) at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa. The show, which features songs, carols, stories and poetry, runs Nov. 27th and 28th as well as several dates in December. I remember seeing Man of La Mancha with my dad at a Denver dinner theater when I was young, and it felt like quite the adventure!

I can’t recall how Jennifer and I heard about the first Phoenix Girls Chorus concert we saw together at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix, but it clearly left an impression since Jennifer went on to happily sing and tour with them for many years. Had we never seen that concert together, she might never have discovered her musical talents. Hence my motto about children and the performing arts: Expose them early and often.

The Phoenix Girls Chorus will perform two holiday concerts this season—a Holiday Family Concert called “Memories and Music” at 7pm on Dec. 5th at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, and a Holiday Classics Concert called “Holiday Grandeur” at 8pm on Dec. 21st at First United Methodist Church in Phoenix.

The Phoenix Boys Choir presents Holiday Traditions (traditional hymns and lively carols from around the world) at several locations throughout the Valley beginning Dec. 12th. The program features a special reenactment of “The Night Before Christmas.”

The Phoenix Children’s Chorus will perform 25 Years of Holiday Celebrations (with special guest artist Desert Echoes Flute Project) during a matinee and an evening performance on Dec. 5th. The event, which includes a silent auction, takes place at St. Agnes Church in Phoenix. (I love getting teacher gifts at auctions—it’s like doing double the good works!)

Phoenix Chorale (formerly the Phoenix Bach Choir) presents a free open rehearsal Dec. 4th from 6:30-9:30pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Phoenix.
Love, Death, Devil the Piece

The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan and Ranga Shankara are proud to present a powerful, provocative and electrifying dance-theatre performance by the Ben J. Riepe Kompanie from Düsseldorf, Germany.
The Düsseldorf-based choreographer Ben J. Riepe’s latest work is based on the five-part performance series “Practise seeing beauty – Love, Death and the Devil” that he created with his company in 2008. This production starts off where the performance series with its different formats (installation, stage pieces, outdoor-performance) new techniques and means of artistic expression left off. The production is characterised by a synthesis of precise choreographic management of time, movement, space and context on the one hand, and the individual improvisational creativity of all involved artists on the other. And by a delight in powerful images and (baroque) costumes.

“Our” Messiah

Scholars are still arguing about whether the April 1742 premiere of Messiah was a hit or a flop; Dublin was a long way from London, and after 28 years in the snakepit of commercial opera there, Handel had collected a lot of enemies ready to dish him given the slightest opportunity.

What is not in any doubt is that long before Handel died in 1759, Messiah had become his best-known work. By the 19th century it had become much more: one of the central cultural artifacts of the composer’s adopted homeland, along with steak and kidney pudding, afternoon tea, and Westminster Abbey.

By 1885, when George Bernard Shaw began his career as a music critic, bloated ceremonial performances with amateur choruses numbering in the thousands had become routine and it was as compulsory for the audience to stand for the “Hallelujah” chorus as for “God Save the Queen.”

Such performances were still routine in the U.S. as well as in England in the mid-20th century and haven’t entirely vanished today. But little by little the ideals of the “early-music movement” began to penetrate even the Messiah industry. In 1985, musicologist Joshua Rifkin was booed by his colleagues when he dared suggest that Bach’s choral works should probably be performed with just one singer per part, but his ideas have percolated throughout the world of music. No one suggests that Handel’s oratorio choruses should be sung by a quartet; Shaw asked that Parliament should pass a law against using more than 80 singers, but his joking proposal is much closer to the norm today than 800.

With smaller choral forces came the possibility of using smaller orchestral forces as well, and early-music practitioners were not slow to realize that the growing popularity of the small-is-beautiful aesthetic offered them a way to open their appeal to mainstream musical audiences. The Tudor Choir and Seattle Baroque Orchestra first teamed up for an annual authentic Baroque Messiah in 1996; at present it’s the only opportunity to experience the work at full length (most performances concentrate on the first, “Christmas” section and trim more or less heavily from parts II and III.) But when it comes down to basics, authenticity and completeness are secondary. Almost from its first performances, Messiah has occupied a special place in the Western musical repertory. Whether Handel saw it so or not, it still functions as a celebration of communal spirit as well as dramatic, tuneful, moving expression of religious faith. The early-music community needs its symbolic centerpieces as much as any other community, and here’s our own chance to celebrate: the season and ourselves. – Roger Downey

Disclaimer: I am coming at this work as an appreciator rather than an expert.

I’ve been listening to Bach’s Mass in B Minor today. While I won’t be so bold as to claim it is the best thing I have ever heard, I would be hard pressed to name a recording that surpasses it.

The glory of it all had me thinking about music in general and the myriad truths it can reflect. I think I tend to appreciate music (and perhaps art as a whole) of two different kinds: music that says something about the world we live in and music that gives a glimpse of the World to come. I think the Mass in B minor belongs to the latter party.

I read somewhere that among the works of music that were recorded in the Galileo probe/spacecraft for all those aliens to listen to is the Mass in B minor. I love the idea that when that thing makes contact with the aliens it will begin by playing the Mass as if to say, “This is the best that we’ve ever done, now show us what you can do bitch”

So, I’m too lazy to sign up for a real Flickr account, and I’ve maxed out my uploads for a month. So above you will find some new pictures.

In the doldrums between the beginning of fall and the xmas high season of consumer craziness, Turin seemed to be sleeping. (or my SADS was rearing its ugly head, and I was sleeping) Each evening the sun goes down sooner and sooner, and most nights are encased in a thick fog.

I was feeling pensive for much of last week. Two of my students cancelled on me, so I had some free time. I literally have done everything I can think of, tourist-wise at least, here in Turin, except for a couple of castles.

So, last Tuesday and Wednesday I decided to see if I could cram any more culture into my head and soul, with visits to both Palazzo Reale, and La Venaria Reale. Tuesday’s Palazzo Reale was more of the same, with silk covered walls, giant chandeliers, ballrooms bedecked in the baroque style, and various bedrooms filled with matching furniture (the horse statue and the green ballroom pics above are from this place). This palace in particular has not really ever fallen out of service, so is more or less intact, and has been renovated several times. It was unfortunately a snoozefest, marked by the old Italian guide literally standing 6 inches behind me in what could only be an attempt to make me move through the rooms faster (I was in the last tour group of the day). Um, it’s not my fault your English audio guide takes forever to describe each room, back it up old man! [Though, you do get points for actually having an audio guide...]

Wednesday, however, blew me away. For a variety of reasons, but mostly due to my long slow goodbye to Torino, I have been feeling melancholy. So of course in the middle of a rainy, grey, and foggy week, is the perfect time to visit a tumble-down palace ! In my defense, it was sunny when I woke up, and made my way towards the train station, but in true Torino style, the weather promptly turned into the background of a spooky horror film.

La Venaria Reale is a counterpoint to Palazzo Reale. Neglected for decades, and only renovated fairly recently, it was basically a shell of a building. The region has decided to restore it (including its HUGE gardens in order to become the “Versailles of Italy”) as they did Castello di Rivoli, with a contemporary view. Most of the rooms are painted in white tones, highlighting what’s left (not much) of the crumbling stucco work, frescoes, and paintings. There are projections of actors in period dress talking about aspects of court life, and an odd contemporary vision of the scullery involving burning antlers and a big slide show. So, given that the actors were all talking in Italian, it was becoming another snoozefest.

But then you sweep aside a giant red velvet curtain and literally walk into light…into the “Galleria Grande” designed by the architect Juvarra. Holy crap. Yes, I was already feeling bummed, but I was literally almost moved to tears. I believe it’s the most beautiful room I’ve seen in all of my travels. Since I was there during the middle of the week and during the off-season, I was in the long hall by myself (especially since all the museum proctors took a smoke break at the same time) and I found I almost couldn’t leave. If not for the sun beginning to set, and the need to catch the last shuttle home, I would have laid in the middle of the floor for hours.

But, it was time to go.

________

At home, tensions with the roommate are at an all-time high, so when Carlo ‘invited’ me over for some fun times, I jumped at the chance. I had to walk a good mile or two to his attic apartment, and at 12 AM, the fog was the kind of fog that perhaps you could describe as pea soup. Visibility was maybe 12-20 feet, so luckily I knew where I was going, but it was rather spooky, and cold. Alas! A combination of factors led to a complete and utter (and a first…) failure in the sex department. Perhaps it was the spooky walk through the fog, where at any moment Jack the Ripper could appear with a gas lantern in his hand. Perhaps it was my general moodiness or my guilt about Michele. Perhaps it was the way that Carlo did this weird moaning thing that started to seriously get on my nerves, or that sex with him (who doesn’t own lube? I mean, really…bad gay!!) was like sticking a Genovese Salami into a cocktail straw. Eventually, I gave up, apologized, and slunk home…

.

Thank goodness that Thursday was cookie baking day, so I was able to eat my feelings, and was well prepared for that Sunday….

Last Colors of the Season
I saw the autumn photos by C. Margeli and the rich colors brought out the Baroque in me. As we approach the end of the season, the last of the red and gold leaves will soon fall off the trees. Catch a last glimpse while you can. Time to dust off those classical CDs and yes, go for a drive with the sunroof open and the music turned up. Woo hoo!

Enjoy Fabio Biondi with Europa Galante perfoming Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – Autumn:

Gruyères is 810 m above sea level, 4.5 km south-south-east of the district capital Bulle. The historical town is placed on top of an isolated hill north of the alps, in the foothills of mount Molèson . It is also the location where the Saane river (French name: Sarine) leaves the Fribourg alps. Long famous for it’s cheese it is also home to a notable castle with wonderful Baroque style interiors.

The Castle of Gruyères located in the Medieval town of Gruyères, Fribourg, is one of the most famous in Switzerland. The castle, constructed in the 13th century, was home to a long succession of Gruyères counts. The end of the 15th century stands out as the golden age in the history of the counts. In 1476, count Louis takes part in the Burgundy war by the Confederates’ side. Following this deed of valour, modernization works were undertaken. The adjustment of the esplanade with its chapel, the spiral staircase in the courtyard and the transformation of the main building go back to that time. Thus, the castle loses its fortress appearance to become a stately residence. The baroque interiors remind one of the time when the bailiffs sent by Fribourg lived there.

The Castle was decimated by a fire in 1493 which destroyed virtually everything but the dungeons. Michel, the last count, ran up huge debts reconstructing the living quarters in Savoyard style and then fled, leaving his creditors – the governments of Fribourg and Bern – to divide up his lands between them.

A rich Geneva dynasty, the Bovy and Balland families, bought the castle in 1848 and supported a number of artists in residence, including the French landscape painter Corot, before the cantonal government of Fribourg assumed control in 1938. The Castle was made into a museum and opened to the public. Since 1993, a foundation ensures the conservation as well as the highlighting of the building and the art collection.

There are a number of cosy cities along the Costa Del Sol which are big enough to explore during an extended holiday (if you can drag yourself away from the beach) but also small enough to enjoy in a weekend.

View over Malaga from Castle Gibalfaro

The atmosphere around Malaga is relaxed and the city is a perfect size to wander around on foot, even on a hot day. The squares in the inner city have lovely bars and coffee shops around the perimeter – like so much of continental Europe – and the newer part of the city is chock-a-block with designer boutiques and department stores.

Plaque marking Picasso's birthplace...

One of the squares has a plaque marking the birthplace of Pablo Picasso at his former home; with great bathos, it is now next to an Irish bar. I didn’t have time to visit the Picasso museum in the city but it is centrally-located and very popular.

...and what has become of that birthplace

The old part of the city is filled with gorgeous baroque architecture, and as with much of Catholic Spain a great deal of money has been spent on elaborate churches and cathedrals.

There are often levies to enter these buildings but, being both Catholic and a student, I rather objected to this so I affected to enter the Cathedral shortly before a service, had a wander about, then made a loud comment (in English, even though I speak some Spanish) about having left the cat out and the gas on and walked out.

Malaga Cathedral

The walk up to the Castle of Gibalfaro is testing, particularly in the heat of summer, but is worth it for the views over the harbour and the prominent Plaza del Toros (bullring).

The Plaza del Toros

The castle itself is disappointing and the moorish fortress of the Alcazaba is more worthy of the entrance fee. The last time I was there they were in the process of excavating a newly-discovered amphitheatre, which looked impressive.

Amphitheatre

Whatever you do, though, don’t be tempted by the rapscallions offering tours on a horse and trap – they took my parents and grandparents around after agreeing a price, then one of them punched my Dad when he wouldn’t part with an extra 10 Euros at the end. You have been warned.

It is not difficult to admire Baroque artist, Artemisia Gentileschi. Her biography is one of despair made into beautiful creations. Gentileschi was a trained artist by her father’s hand who most likely had exposed her to sexual abuse as well as hired her mentor, Agustino Tassi, who she was later raped and abused by. Artemisia tried to speak but the trials against her rapist later resulted in her torturing and painful physical examinations. Through all of her tragedy came beautiful and powerful works of art. Her heavily chiaro-scuro style works often depict gender versus gender situations and psychologically twisting affairs. In this painting, Gentileschi reveals her desire for revenge in a beautiful, Carrivagio-esque depiction of Judith slaying her male enemy, Holofernes. In the tail of Holofernes, the Hebrews defeated him through Judith’s sly tactics of seduction and rage. A truely femenist story, just as Artemisia painted. She painted her revenge; possibly the most exquisite revenge I have ever seen.

Main baroque masterpiece in the main plaza in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, NW Spain. The city is a medieval gem – the surrounding countryside exquisite and far from the normal image of Spain.

Very green and verdant with Celtic undertones – rainy climate and a fresh Atlantic bashing the hilly coastline. Beautiful…

A few weeks ago, I dropped in on the Tartini ensemble during a rehearsal in St Mary’s church, Penzance. They were preparing for a concert of music by Dietrich Buxtehude and Jan Adam Reincken. And a very interesting and exciting concert it turned out to be: music by two composers whose work is heard less often than it deserves to be, with brilliant performances on period instruments by the ensemble.

Here’s a photograph taken during the rehearsal.

It was also the first outing for the baroque violin that I wrote about a couple of posts ago. After the rehearsal, Pamela Rosenfeld played this adagio by Tartini on it, accompanied by Nigel Wicken on a chamber organ.

So here it happens, the siren of Architecture called, and I heeded.

Nay, I relinquished.

Architecture, that capricious muse, finally seeps in my art chamber- yet how could I have kept it at bay?

Architecture is, indeed, frozen music.

If this building was music, what song/genre would it be?

Sir Barry says that some architects of the Baroque era literally applied to their designs harmonic ratios learned from musical intervals and harmonic relations between notes.

I always thought Baroque was the music closest to the act of creating, to perfect mathematical equations, the music of the cosmos. Fractals’ music. Baroque and its clavichords is what I am listening to right now, as I finish a 3D digital model. The model dances and takes form. Digital sculpture.

You must pardon if I wax poetic. I just finished ‘Death in Venice’ and my heart is full of poetry tonight.
