Following yesterday’s piece on the Heisman Trophy, I want to highlight a flaw of only looking

Following yesterday’s piece on the Heisman Trophy, I want to highlight a flaw of only looking at the last 20 winners. You get a very different story if you extend the number to 25. Consider:

Barry Sanders
Tim Brown
Vinny Testaverde
Bo Jackson
Doug Flutie

Those are the five before my 20. Sanders was the most exciting running back I’ve ever seen, and he is already in the Hall of Fame. Tim Brown was for most of his career the second or third best receiver in all of football, behind Jerry Rice and even with Cris Carter. Vinny Testaverde was incredibly productive for 21 seasons, with the 6th most passing yards and 8th most touchdowns all-time. Bo Jackson was spectacular until his hip gave way. Even Doug Flutie, distinctly the weakest of this five, had a better NFL career than any QB in the last 20 years of Heisman winners, though Palmer can and should still surpass him. The last 20 Heisman winners have been abnormally weak. They succeeded an absolutely brilliant five year run. That should be what Mark Ingram really aspires to.

Second, consider these two posts over at River Ave. Blues. MLB has been giving draft pick compensation to teams that lose top free agents for the last 30 years. Mike Axisa traces the draft picks given up by the Yankees from 1979-1985 and from 1986-1991. The posts remind us, first, how weak the MLB draft is. Second, they remind us how little draft pick compensation seems to matter. For 13 seasons of free agents, the Yankees missed out on Wally Joyner and Joey Cora. Finally, the posts remind us why the Yankees lost for all of those years. Consider the crop of free agents acquired. For the most part, the Yankees picked up past their prime players who contributed little. Unsurprisingly, they did not win.

It would appear, judging by the venomous queue, that you’ve all taken your cue(ue) from Mad Ad

It would appear, judging by the venomous queue, that you’ve all taken your cue(ue) from Mad Adam today. A wise move. He’s carved out quite the little niche for himself… it’s over there, by the porn, whiskey and questionable music… and he owes it all to his scorn and contempt for all things. And sure, he’s had to learn to live with the side effects of his blood pressure medicine and an occasional heart attack, but never let it be said that the man isn’t dedicated to his emotions. And so, this queue’s to you, Mad Adam, and the followers you’ve intimidated to inspire.

But before that, there’s this: a happy “29th” birthday wish to the very first EdHoncho.com commenter, Scoregasm. Yes, readers, I have far more of your personal information than you could ever imagine. No need to worry, though, I’ll only be selling it to the highest, most reputable bidder. Now, I’m not gonna tell you to give that next credit card statement a more thorough examination, but I’m not gonna not tell you to, either. That’s right, I just went double-negative on your ass. Deal with it.

Q: WTF? Haiku? I thought this was about sports, god dammit! I got one for ya, I call it a fucku, and it goes like this… FUCK U!

- Art Thayer, Strongsville, Ohio

A: I like it! See, poetry can be fun!

Q: So Barry Bonds’ career is over, according to his agent. Does he make it into the Hall?

- Gabe Whespers, Lochbuie, Colorado

A: Not a chance. The last thing the powers-that-be want to do is relive all the scandal and bad press caused by the steroid era in baseball. Electing Bonds would re-open every last wound that has, somewhat remarkably, been healing. Whether he deserves it or not is moot. They just want to be whole again.

Bonds is, of course, the poster boy for baseball’s steroid era. Mostly because, of all the guys implicated, he’s the biggest dick. McGwire seems like a nice enough guy, and everyone just feels sorry for Canseco. But Bonds? That dick cheated.

And let’s not forget Bonds’ physical changes. McGwire and Canseco were bigger guys to begin with (though certainly not as large as they would become), but Bonds wasn’t. And unless he underwent plastic surgery to make his head bigger, a peculiar and questionably beneficial procedure if it exists, what better way to explain how he went from this:

to this:

?

The head tops out at a certain size, which is why I’ve been wearing the same size 8 1/2 hat for years (I’ve always had a lush, full head of hair). It doesn’t continue to grow. This, I contend, is the single most damning bit of evidence against Bonds in the court of public opinion. Order! Order!

Q: You think the Saints or the Colts will go undefeated?

- Olive Swann, Orange, Texas

A: The Colts won’t. Look, we’ve been here before with Indianapolis (and yet, everyone seems to forget this). They’ll have the top seed locked up after this weekend, and they’ll begin to rest their starters. They’ll lose a game or two before the regular season ends and everyone will declare it “not a big deal” because their best players weren’t playing. Then they’ll go into the playoffs and lose unexpectedly to a hungry, battle-tested team (The Chargers? The Bengals?) as Peyton Manning does his little happy feet dance. It is written (here).

The Saints are a different animal altogether. They got their lucky game out of the way, as most teams chasing an undefeated regular season must (Saints vs. Redskins, ‘07 Patriots vs. Ravens), they have a team pushing them for the #1 seed (the Vikings, though their loss Sunday night to the Cardinals certainly eased the pressure on the Saints), but most importantly, Saints head coach Sean Payton said they’re going to go for it (the undefeated season). I love it. I’ve never been a fan of resting guys before the playoffs… and the Colts are Exhibit A in my case. Almost every year they’re resting their starters, almost every year they disappoint.

And when you look at the Saints remaining schedule… if they make it past the Falcons this weekend (a division road game, which is always dicey, Redman or no), the only team I could see giving them any problems is Carolina (also a division road game, will make the Panthers miserable season, they’re not as bad as people think when they put their minds to it, etc…). They should win both games. Once they’re in the playoffs, with that homefield advantage, I don’t see them losing until the Super Bowl (and no, I’m not saying they’re going to lose the Super Bowl, just that it will be much more of a tossup than any of their other remaining games… get off my back!).

So to answer your question… maybe. Let’s hope so, Mercury Morris is really grating on my nerves.

Q: What did Harry Redknapp ever do to you?

- Ollie Ironbottom, Walthamstow, Waltham Forest, London, England

A: The details are too painful, but let’s just say it involved my beloved English Bulldog “Jukes”… and Redknapp having butt sex with it. I can’t bring myself to go further into it than that… let’s just move on.

Q: Mad Adam made his feelings on the Heisman clear in eloquent fashion… who you got?

- Henderson Jason, Ben Lomond, California

A: Such controversy over such a minor award. The Honchos must be so capably selected as to avoid controversy, since they garner nary a single mention on the worldwide web. The entire worldwide web. Not one post, or blog, or snide comment. It’s as if they exist in a vacuum. Hmmm… my perplexometer is tingling. Nothing to worry about, I suppose. I am good… nay, outstanding… at what I do. I can only assume everyone’s satisfied. Back pats all around.

As for this Heisman thingy, I am in partial agreement with Mad Adam. The two finalists should be Donkey Kong Suh and Toby Gerhart, no question. One wonders if Barry Sanders would have won the Heisman today, since he played on the 3rd best team in the Big 8. Probably, since his numbers were off-the-charts preposterous… almost obscene, really… but it would have been very close.

Unlike Mad Adam, though, I would give the award to Gerhart. The numbers he put up for an improving Stanford squad bordered on the nonsensical, especially considering the quality of the defenses he faced, and their purpose… that is, to stop Gerhart. And in the ultimate test… if you took Gerhart off the Cardinal’s team, they fall into mediocrity, if not worse. Suh had the same effect on games as Gerhart… most of the time. He could be neutralized (see Texas Tech, Kansas… Suh was a non-factor). He also passes the ultimate test, but I just feel like Gerhart was more consistently dominant.

As for the other three chumps… well, allow me to use one of my favorite, dismissive retorts… “pffffft”.

That being said, I agree with Mad Adam, Mark Ingram Jr.’s going to win it… even though you could replace him at running back with Robert Downey Jr. and the Tide would still be playing for the National Championship.

Q: Really? A Honcho for Ed Hochuli? Turned on by the way he fills out that shirt or something?

- Burt Crouch, Chalco, Nebraska

A: What? Don’t be ridiculous. It takes more to win a Honcho than filling out a shirt well… which he does, mind you. And he’s so thorough with his explanations… and forceful with his signalling… and confusing with his affect… and thoughtful with his… what? Oh, right, uh… bitches and hos, bitches and hos. I gotta go, yo.

Before I begin the final entry to the “Things We Love” posts, I wanted to take time to m

Before I begin the final entry to the “Things We Love” posts, I wanted to take time to mention something completely unrelated to Football. As a fan of sports all my life I have watched tons of various sports. I find different “events” special. Some are well-known (i.e. the Super Bowl) while others might garner less attention. I will not pretend I reach a lot of people, in fact I reach almost no one. But, I wanted to mention an event coming up that is very special to me.

This week is Jimmy V week on ESPN. It is a tribute to Jim Valvano, a college basketball coach who inspired many but had his life cut short by cancer. Every year the Jimmy V Foundation, a foundation set up to support cancer research, holds their Men’s Basketball Classic. This year it is December 8th starting at 7PM on ESPN. There are two games at the same location. What makes this event so special is between games they re-air Jimmy’s speech at the 1993 Espy Awards. It is one of my all time favorite speeches, and even though I am going to post it here and watch the entire thing, I will make a point to try to watch it Monday night, just as I do every year.

For anyone that has ever been or knows a family member or friend diagnosed with cancer it is a scary thing. If you can support the cause I applaud you. With that said, I just hope that people take the time and watch this speech, it’s unbelievably touching and emotional. Here is the speech, and below it is a link to the foundation’s website…

http://www.jimmyv.org/index.php

Now it is time for the final installment of the things that make football fun. This does not mean there are not other fun things with regard to football. It simply means I do not have the time to do this everyday. I must admit these columns have been really easy. I feel like Tiger Woods because compared to other posts these have been like cheating. So sit back and enjoy…

1. Mascots

A college staple. Often they make no sense, and sometimes they have no affiliation to a team’s name, but either way they are fun to watch for some reason…

Sometimes they even fight…

I have no clue if that is real, but I am pretty sure the duck just teabagged that cougar.

2. The Rams, Lions, Helmets, and Buccaneers

If there are going to be great teams there has to be terrible ones. These four top the list. Their combined record this year is 5-49. That is incredible. Talk about teams in disarray. At least the Helmets have a logo that fits their name…

3. Trick Plays

Nothing gets a crowd on their feet like a trick play. Whether it be a double reverse, the fumble-rooskie, statue of liberty, flea-flicker, you name it. Here is a top 10 countdown followed by a play that makes no sense but somehow worked…

4. Chad Ochocinco Celebrations

Some of his actions may rub people the wrong way, but there was a time when a celebration was the best thing around. With the NFL cracking down on celebrations its great to see a guy like Chad still doing his thing, even if it costs him money…

5. Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald

I put them together because it is nearly impossible to definitively say who is better, but regardless, these guys are absolute studs at the WR position. It seems like at least once a game you are guaranteed to see something great out of these two.

First check out this link for one of my favorite routes of the year. The move Fitzgerald puts on the corner with one step was unreal…

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d8137f891/Fitzgerald-2-yd-TD

6. Players With Hot Girlfriends or Wives

Yesterday I put cheerleaders up now its time to give players wives/girlfriends their due…

Reggie Bush’s old (or maybe new, if they are back together) flame Kim Kardashian…

Even Jake Plummer did well for himself, this is his wife Kollette Klassen…

7. Rivalries

Seeing two longtime foes go at each other year in and year out is one of the real special parts of all sports. Because of footballs physical nature (that’s an understatement) rivalries can get extremely intense. Although NFL rivalries do exist, such as the Ravens/Steelers, Cowboys/Redskins, Helmets/Winning, it is rare that any NFL rivalry matches the intensity of those found in the college game. Here are me and my panel’s top 5 college rivalries (my panel is whoever is online as I am typing this, probably my buddy Vater)…

5. Army vs. Navy (I have to give props to the military)

4. Notre Dame vs USC (gotta love the Bush-Push)

3. Alabama vs. Auburn (divides an entire state)

2. Texas vs. Oklahoma (the Red River Rivalry, unbelievable intensity by two top programs, the crowd is always split)

1. Michigan vs. Ohio State (easily number 1, sorry to the other rivalries who came close and didn’t make it, you can argue a lot of rivalries)

8. Watching People You Hate Fail

This is why we love Jay Cutler. Few men talk as much trash, act as cocky, and play as poorly. His INTs bring a smile to my face…

Now that makes me feel better.

9. Small Running Backs

Today’s great example…Ray Rice. That Guy (copyright Jon Gruden 2009) is a football player. He is 5′8″, but can take a hit and has incredible balance…

But no one, and I mean no one, was more electrifying that this small RB (many might argue him the greatest RB of all time)…

10. Tailgating/Drinking and Watching Football

The great American past time. Unhealthy food, copious amounts of alcohol, and a good old fashion great time. Football, Beer, Food…there is nothing better.

This weekend I will be attending the Patriots game at Miami. I cannot wait to indulge and enjoy the atmosphere. This has been fun, and I want to thank everyone that gave me ideas for these last 3 posts. Football is just an awesome sport. Next week I will try to get back to stats and analysis. Thanks.

Here’s another Thanksgiving tradition for you: The Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day Game. Now you may say the Lions are the worst team in the NFL, but I’ll have you know that we have won TWO games this year. Two, people. And next year, maybe we’ll win three. Ha! I am a huge Lions fan, have been since the Barry Sanders days, and I WILL be at the Superbowl when we get there. That’s folks, you heard it here first, the Lions are going to the Superbowl! YAYYYYYY!!!!!

Ha. Anyway, the Lions game on Thanksgiving is a years-long family tradition. So we went to Ford Field. There were 11 of us in the gang, two of whom were friends of mine that moved to Chicago after college. I was so happy to hang out with them:

The beginning of the game was cool cause the Lions scored the first touchdown but then it pretty much ended right there on our end. There’s always next year!

So, we took a stroll around, checked out the merch and grabbed some Polish sausages. Mmm. My mom, older sis, Aunt and cousin were working a Big Boy stand so we kept stopping by and saying hi to them too.

That’s no dirty-water city hot dog, right there!

The best part is that while we were walking around, we saw the Tim Hortons cup walking around, holding hands with a little girl!

Now isn’t that the cutest little cup of coffee you ever did see?

Go Lions! ROARRRRRRRR!

Ladies and gentlemen, it was a bad week to play in the AFC North. The Browns managed to choke twice

Ladies and gentlemen, it was a bad week to play in the AFC North. The Browns managed to choke twice against the Lions, the Bengals gift-wrapped Oakland a win, the Steelers inexplicably lost to the Chiefs and sustained injuries to both of their top 2 QBs, and the Ravens lost a close one to the still-perfect Colts. Some of these collapses were more epic than others, but all were impressive. Obviously, the Browns and Bengals took the spotlight by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in truly remarkable losses. The Browns blew a 21 point lead and committed an obvious pass interference with no time left that lead to the game-losing play and the Bengals fumbled a kickoff with 20 seconds left. If there were stats for the biggest failures within the same state, these two teams would hold every one. Between their bad years when they both were on the blooper reels and this sunday when they both held leads, they are kings of the fail.

As much as I pretend I would like to talk about the Steelers loss to the Chiefs, I really don’t want to. The Steelers aren’t contenders and there is nothing to talk about with the Chiefs. The biggest story out of this game to me is that Dennis Dixon was thrust briefly into the national spotlight. Anyone else remember when he was the Heisman front-runner but tore his ACL, and then proceeded to play on his torn ACL for another game? This guy had it all. He was likeable, tough, monumentally talented and he was a double-threat. I do not know if it would translate to the NFL, but anyone who watched his college games would want to see him play at the very least. Well, except Steelers fans who want to see Ben.

The only other game I thought was worth talking about was the Monday nighter with the Titans remaining perfect with Vince Young at the helm. True, they got some help from Kris “Anti-Clutch” Brown, but give an 0-6 team credit for not giving up and pulling themselves inexplicably back into the playoff picture. I wouldn’t pick them to make it, but they are at least in the picture. The Texans remain in the top 5 for most underachieving teams and “most likely to not be a sleeper once picked as a sleeper”. They are like the Chargers in the Drew Brees days. A very good team, who everyone thinks could succeed but just cannot quite do it. They have a superstar (LT and Andre Johnson respectively), an under-the-radar QB, and no clutch-time performances to bring them to the next level. Next year, Texans fans, next year.

Honestly, most of the other games last week were mediocre, but I want to talk Matthew Stafford. Last week he officially became a franchise QB. When he got absolutely hammered on the Hail Mary and limped off the field he was a man, but when he came back in he became a legend, at least as far as this decade’s Lions are concerned. He has always had the physical tools, but when he went out there for the last play, he proved that he was more than a big arm (I’m looking at you Jay Cutler). He is a leader and, in my opinion, has already lived up to his #1 pick. Yes, he still throws tons of picks, as you saw on Thanksgiving when you weren’t stuffing your face, but as he gets more experienced he will limit them. I see Stafford as a combination of Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler. Take the leadership of Rodgers, the arm of Cutler, and the losing-but-not-his-fault of Rodgers. Not at all a bad combination. Detroit finally has someone to look for not named Barry Sanders.

Speaking of Barry, there is one last thing I want to touch on before turning to the Thanksgiving games. Chris Johnson is giving m flashbacks. He is not quite as flashy as Barry was, but he reminds me of him. He can make you miss, he can run away from you with ease, he can catch the ball, and he can take a hit and keep going. He is giving Adrian Peterson a run for his money as the best back in football, and I would even say he has surpassed him. In comparison to Adrian Peterson, he has an inferior offensive, less of a threat at QB to keep people out of the box, fewer fumbles, and more yardage. Peterson is the more physical back, but while he breaks more tackles, it does not lead to more yardage than Johnson, and it results in more fumbles. The only thing Peterson does than Johnson cannot is just flat run someone over, but why run someone over when you can just as effectively go around them? If I was drafting for a fantasy draft next year, i would take Johnson #1 in a heartbeat. Keep in mind he is the league’s leading rusher for a 4-6 team without any other big time threats on offense. Seriously, he is among the most underrated backs in the NFL, and it is not as if no one talks about him. He is just that good.

Thanksgiving Day Games

The Packers just curb-stomped the hapless Lions, but that is not the storyline here. Why is Matt Stafford playing hurt on short rest? Why? Would the Yankees put CC on the mound if he was hurt and the team was way below .500? NO!!!! You do not risk this, Detroit. Your future is seriously hurt and you just threw him to the dogs like Ivan IV (look it up). It did not even rally work, as he threw 4 picks and just got destroyed by an excellent GB secondary that is missing Al Harris. Keep your future safe, Detroit, do not play him if he is hurt.

Dallas was clearly better than Oakland but there was really no surprise there. The only thing I really have to say about the game is that it is hilarious that the Raiders appear to have built themselves for the Hail Mary pass. A strong-armed QB in Russell and fast WRs to get down the field is all you need and the Raiders have built themselves perfectly for it. It makes sense because they have to throw so many of them to try and win games. It is called Hail Mary for a reason: it is only a prayer. Just funny that the Raiders appear to have built their team to be successful on Hail Mary plays. Too bad they are never in range of a Hail Mary to win it.

In Halftime Show news, CBS had a supermodel on. Cool, I guess. I just know that FOX will never have one on because Terry Bradshaw might try to pull something.

The New York Giants have resumed their freefall in Denver by not scoring a touchdown and just generally getting outworked by the Broncos. I still do not know if the Broncos are legitimate or if they are simply another inconsistent team, but they sure looked good on Thursday night. Whether it was the Giants offense sucking or the Broncos D, I do not know, but the defense looked pretty good. The Broncos are in the driver’s seat for a playoff berth, with 2 games against KC and a game against Oakland remaining. I like their chances of making the playoffs, but I am just not sure what to think about their chances in the playoffs.

Yum

TURKEYS OF THE FALL

The New Jersey Nets- Ok maybe it was just too easy to pick on an 0-14 team but so far they have looked horrible. If they prevent the record, it will be in Sacramento, but expect to see them break it.

The Cleveland Browns- I could make any number of Cleveland jokes, but instead, I will give them hope. Brady Quinn could be really good. He could be a fluke too, but Cleveland wouldn’t be too disappointed if he was. They are used to it.

Turkey- This is not even a way of making fun of Turkey, I just have it on the brain. I am going to go have some now.

That is all for this edition. As finals draw nearer, it will be a bit harder to get into the detail I would like, but we will do our best to keep it up. Thanks for reading.

“Today is part 2 of this 3 part blog celebrating the marriage of sports and Thanksgiving. Today of course is the big day and right now as I’m typing this, the Lions are being destroyed again. At the end of the third quarter, the Lions are down 27 to 7. Pathetic. Glad to see our hero, Matt Stafford is in the midst of another affirming performance. Sorry folks, unfortunately for both you the fan, and Stafford, the Lions can’t play the Browns every week.”

The Detroit Lions used to make regular appearances on Monday Night Football when players like Herman

The Detroit Lions used to make regular appearances on Monday Night Football when players like Herman Moore and Barry Sanders were integral parts of the high-powered offense that the Monday Night Football schedule makers craved. Sold-out Monday night games at the Pontiac Silverdome were legendary. The fights in the stands were just as entertaining as the product on the field. And at that time in Lions history, that’s saying something.

But that was a long time ago.

The last time the Detroit Lions appeared on Monday Night Football was October 8, 2001 against the St. Louis Rams.

They got shellacked, 35-0.

Since then, ABC/ESPN has, understandably, shied away from placing the team in their Monday night showcase, which is also saying something. Because according to our crack research staff, you have to be downright terrible to not be invited on the premier league showcase.

In fact, you have to be the worst team in the league on a regular basis.

Monday Night football at-a-glance since the Lions last appeared:

There have been 144 games total.

Every single NFL team has appeared in at least one game (Houston Texans).

Two other teams — Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals — have appeared three times each, the next lowest amount.

The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles have appeared most often (19 times each.)

Knowing that every team has played in at least one Monday Night Football game since the Lions last appeared, it’s a bit peculiar that the Lions haven’t been invited back, even if it’s to throw Detroiters a bone in tough time.

Alas, the closest we came was a preseason Monday Night Football game in 2005 against – you guessed it – the St. Louis Rams.

Of course, there is one remedy for this ailment.

Winning.

In light of another fantastic week of NFL action, you should go back into the archives and read my blog on just how much the NFL ROCKS! Or just click here .

My personal game of the week. Chicago 6 San Fransisco 10 . A game truly deserving of a National audience.

But this may be premature considering the Browns are playing tonight.

Also is it sad that I usually spend my Sunday nighs sobbing while watching Barry Sanders highlight films on YouTube, or is it understandable?

There is a prevailing school of thought in Detroit that thinks the city needs a winning football tea

There is a prevailing school of thought in Detroit that thinks the city needs a winning football team, as if victories on the field would have equaled proper protocol in the mayor’s office or less jokes on The Jay Leno Show.

My question is: Why?

In the span of time since William Clay Ford, Sr. bought the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Tigers have won two World Series and advanced to another; the Detroit Pistons won three championships while losing two Finals; and the Detroit Red Wings have appeared in eight Stanley Cup Finals, winning four of them.

The Lions? They’ve won one playoff game while wallowing in futility for a half century.

There was a brief period of time in the 90’s when the team was legitimately good, but they were never able to get over the hump. Since the retirement of Barry Sanders, they’ve been downright terrible. It was capped off by last year’s first-time-in-NFL-history 0-16 season.

Management has shown a consistent knack for drafting the wrong players and hiring the wrong coaches. The players who do don the intimidating Honolulu Blue look lost and out-of-place most Sundays. And unless you buy tickets to a game (or it’s Thanksgiving) you can’t watch the home games on television due to the NFL’s blackout rule.

In a city constantly the butt of national jokes for its shady political players and a decimated automotive industry that is sucking the lifeblood out of the region, this is supposed to lift our spirits? I don’t see the point in cheering for a team that has a habit of disappointing its fanbase. Regularly.

Removing the Detroit Lions from the equation would allow us to endure less pain and suffering on account of our local teams, and force us to appreciate the professionalism and talent that our other teams showcase.

And removing the cancer from our fandom that is the Lions might even improve our outlook.

It’s officially November, which officially means Thanksgiving turkey and football. I happen to love both those things, culminating with the 8-legged turkey they used to give out to Barry Sanders every year during the Thanksgiving day football game after he ran for 170 yards or something. While I never believed in the existance of an 8-legged turkey, I can tell you that I wanted to believe in them more than the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. Just seemed like a pretty damned cool idea to me, what can I say? You gotta believe in something, right?

real turkey

So sticking with the theme, wouldn’t you like to help out your neighbor with the gift of turkey? Food banks around Arizona are happy to receive turkey donations for those who might have to go without. Check out this select list of drop-off points and turkey drives that are just waiting for your participation! If you know of some others not mentioned here, feel free to send ‘em my way and we’ll get the word out! And if you’ve got a good Barry Sanders or John Madden story, share that as well.

OK I get it , I really do ! Customs are very quaint traditions that one tends to abide by. As it breeds satisfaction and a sense if nothing else , normalcy. Well , try telling that to the NFL this year ,who’ll once again serve up mayhem by providing us with another dollop of the hapless Detroit Lions (1-6-0) on Thanksgiving Day. Now pardon me for saying this, as I’m not from around these parts – I’m English by birth by way of parentage from the Caribbean – Jamaica to be precise. But enough of that – what is it that the NFL and their schedulers are failing to realize by serving up the Lions to us on a silver platter ?

A somewhat downtrodden Lions' coach Jim Schwartz looks up at the scoreboard at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

A somewhat downtrodden Lions’ coach , Jim Schwartz , looks up at the scoreboard at Ford Field in Detroit , Michigan. The Lions would go on to lose to the St Louis Rams 17-10 in the game. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Carlos Osorio …..

It’s bad enough that as a team this roster is only slightly better than the team went (0-16) last season. Much to the ridicule of the entire league and the fans of the game up down the country. Never mind the fact that the team then became the staple of the late night talk show hosts. Who, if they weren’t lambasting Sen. John McCain (R-Az) or former Governor Sarah Palin (R-Ak). Then the Detroit Lions were deemed to be seen as appropriate cannon fodder also for the butt of their jokes. But like the losers of the Presidential elections of last year the Lions can hold their heads high with dignity. Albeit, at the humor of others. But now it has to be said that enough is enough ! The NFL seriously needs to look at the schedule as it gears around the holiday period and serve up the fans with the best games possible. I know that they feel it’s best to stick with tradition. But by my way of thinking, that’s very much akin to walking with the same old worn out pair shoes for the last five years knowing full well that you can afford to buy a brand new pair of shoes. It may well have felt snug when you first bought them . But over the course of time the heel goes , as does the sole or instep of the shoe. Now would it be right to suggest that the NFL is just being downright ignorant by choosing not to replace Lions with a far better game on the day ? Well I’ve leave that for you to decide. But as you can see from the title of this piece , I’m no fan of the Lions and this team at present.

Well the season at its midway point, the Lions as usual are on the ground looking up at everyone else within the NFC North. Leading the way are the Brett Favre led Minnesota Vikings (7-1), followed by the Green Bay Packers (4-3) and the Chicago Bears (4-3). And for a team with aspirations of improving upon last year. What has taken place under this Jim Schwartz coached Lions is pretty much like watching the movie Titanic over and over again. You know that the script and storyline won’t change. After all the incident was based on fact. But in your heart of hearts you’re inclined to believe that providence will send the Lions some respite. And their overall fate will change. But alas once again you’d be wrong and so too are the NFL hierarchy if they’re of the belief that the Lions will be able to entertain the most errant or erstwhile fan of the NFL this Thanksgiving Day. In essence nothing could be further from the truth.

Once again you’ve guessed it, as is customary on Thanksgiving Day. We will be served up with the Detroit Lions playing the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field in Detroit, Thursday 26th November. I wonder what film will be televised on TNT or HBO for that matter ? It’ll be either that or something intimate with the girlfriend to pass the time away. Pardon the pun here ! But if push comes to shove, I guess , I’ll still have my Thanksgiving Day’s meal and then devote some time to my better half. It’s safe to say that digesting the turkey and washing it down with several glasses of alcohol will safely do the trick in having to avoid watching the Lions play. Mind you that’s not to say that the other game being served up on the day will be any the more enticing. Again the usual staple of the Dallas Cowboys . However , we’ll get to see them play their very first Thanksgiving Day’s game at Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington , Texas , against the always less than dependable Oakland Raiders. No clue as of yet, as to whether or not Raiders’ coach, Tom Cable will still be in a position of employment-given his proclivity for beating up on his ex-spouses or live in lover as the case maybe. A rather disturbing fact , which is just now coming to light concerning the embattled coach.

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith, right, avoids St. Louis Rams linebacker Paris Lenon to rush for a first down in the second quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 in Detroit. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Duane Burleson ...............

Tradition being what it is , I do now believe that it’s time for the NFL hierarchy to plainly take a look at the scheduling of many of their games on Thanksgiving Day. Granted, there are those who’ve become accustomed to seeing both the Cowboys and Lions display their zeal on this festive period. But how much longer must the fans have to contend with the diatribe that’s served up by the Detroit Lions. It’s not as if the team has been relevant over the past decade at all. Heavens , one would have to go back to the days when their Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders held sway over the NFL . Who could forget his every jink or weave as he cut his way and carved up a defense almost at will ? When , I for one think of the Lions , that’s literally brings back memories for me and how great they once were. Especially Sanders, who if anything was right to walk away from the game when he did. He served this team with a great deal of distinction . Only to have it thrown in his face by an ownership that in no way shape or form tried to place a winning team around him.

Former Lions’ great Barry Sanders seen here in a montage , displaying his greatness as a player for the Detroit Lions .

The fans themselves felt betrayed by Sanders’ apparent decision to end his career so soon. But one could well understand Sanders’ situation. Had the Lions sought to trade him , it’d be hard to say that they’d be able to get something in return of equal value for a player of Sanders’ caliber. And if even if they’d built around a premise of obtaining several draft picks in exchange for the trade of Sanders. Who’s to say that those picks would’ve amounted to much ? Needless to say we’ll never know as the situation failed to arise. It’s at times like this I wonder as to the so called business acumen of certain members of the Ford family and in particular the current ownership regime. They’ve shown about as much common sense as a drunk exposing himself in public. And then that same individual act as if this was a normal form of behavior him. But the way some would have them tell it they’re quite well aware as to the underlying problems that the franchise faces.

Did it not occur to Bill Ford Jr. that after almost 6 1/2 years of mayhem and ridicule with Matt Millen at the helm of the franchise as the GM, that something urgent needed to be done ? Or my guess was, that he felt that Millen was still quite capable of pulling the proverbial rabbit out of his hat , if not his own ass ! The chances are that it was more likely than not, it was the latter . God knows even with Matt Millen now behind the desk performing as an NFL analyst for NBC. It’s hard to take anything seriously that he might have to say as it concerns the game in today’s NFL. His assessment in talent borders on the choices made in men by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Zsa Zsa Gabor . Both of whom have seen better days behind them , rather than ahead of them.

It’ll always be debatable as to who the ‘greatest running back of all-time in the NFL should be. But I honestly believe that you’d have insert Barry Sanders in there, amongst the top 10 ever ! Alongside the names of such NFL legends as Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Jim Brown , O.J. Simpson , Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson . If you’re either in agreement or disagreement with the names mentioned . Then by all means do leave a comment expressing your thoughts on the topic for further discussion. As always your comments are more than welcomed and will be duly given a reply worthy in response !

So now as that fateful day approaches it’s easy to suggest that the NFL could somehow make a change in its scheduling and have another fixture in place, instead of the Lions taking on the Packers . I’d dare say that the majority of the NFL fans watching will want to be entertained. Rather than being put to sleep by seething-less, haphazard and underachieving Detroit Lions. But then again , things could be worse , a fight could break out at the family gathering on Thanksgiving Day . And then where would you be ? Need I ask ?

If there’s one thing I’m now definitely sure of at this juncture , it will be that I won’t be watching the Detroit Lions this Thanksgiving Day. There has to be far better uses for my time on the day. I’m now about to initiate and write a list of the things I could be doing. Needless to say , an act of the carnal kind is atop of the list ! What’s atop of yours, may I ask ?

In the NFC North, a division that features the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, the running game has been a staple of offenses for decades. Arguably no division in football has a stronger tradition than this one. Granted these teams have been playing longer than most. Nonetheless, when your honor roll includes names like Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung and others, it is tough to argue.

Associated Press -- Tom Dahlin

In the midst of this tradition stand two running backs (to be identified later), yet to enter the pantheon, who have been mentioned in connection with the inability and/or prospect of Brett Favre winning another Super Bowl. As the title hopes of the Vikings are popularly tied to the success of Adrian Peterson, an implicit indictment is made of the backs who played with Favre in Green Bay. Favre, now quarterback of the Vikings, led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory in 1996. Beginning in 1994, the Packers were ranked in the Top 10 in offense (total yards) for 9 of the next 11 seasons. Is the indictment valid?

In the minds of some, one of those backs is clearly superior to the other — but I wonder. Objectively, and to the naked eye, there probably isn’t much room for debate. But, statistically, a conversation is well worth having. Take a look at their numbers:

Single-season career high rushing yards

Running Back A: 1760 Running Back B: 1883

Single-season career high carries

Running Back A: 363 Running Back B: 355

Single-season career high yards per carry

Running Back A: 5.6 Running Back B: 5.3

Single-season career high receptions

Running Back A: 21 Running Back B: 72

  Single-season career high receiving yards

Running Back A: 268 Running Back B: 594

Single-season career high touchdowns

Running Back A: 13 Running Back B: 20

Single-season career high fumbles

Running Back A: 9 Running Back B: 7

For the many years after 1997 that the Packers failed to win a Super Bowl, much less more than a single playoff game in a season, the running game was not a weakness. Nor is it a weakness this season in Minnesota.

Perhaps Favre and his fan club should look closer at the reasons for coming up short in those seasons. The Packers had a solid ground game and the capacity to compel defenses to respond to play action fakes. They had receivers capable of running solid routes, beating deep coverage and scoring in the Red Zone. They had capable tight ends, too.

And if you think the Vikings, with Favre and Adrian Peterson, are a lead pipe lock to get to the Super Bowl, think again. Right now, with an injured Antoine Winfield, the Vikings are ranked 8th defensively (yards allowed), but only 18th with respect to points allowed. The Ravens just scored 31 and came up a stiff breeze short of 34. When it comes to keeping teams off the scoreboard, the Vikings, for all the success of Leslie Frazier have NOT BEEN RANKED IN THE TOP 10 since 1998. (And that’s including two games against the Lions every year.)

At some point before its all over, Brett Favre will have to prove he can still win games for this team. It looks like the things that sunk the 2008 season of the New York Jets have been remedied. Favre is looking as good now as he’s looked in since 2007 when the Packers were 13-3.

Who's Number 1?

This week Brock and I thought we might take a closer look at Homecoming 2009. We enjoy Homecoming festivities just like everyone else. House decorations, Walk around, Saturday morning parade, the fountain being filled with Orange Crush, Homecoming and Hoops, and the football game of course. There is so much going on this week it is tough to keep up with it all, So we will try and slow it down for everyone. In this blog we are going to go over the Grand Marshals of this years homecoming.

Garth Brooks – Yes, the talented singer/songwriter is returning to his Alma Mater as one of the three Grand Marshals. Garth Brooks was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but raised in Yukon, Oklahoma. Garth graduated from OSU in 1984 with a degree in advertising. Fun Fact : Garth came to OSU on a track scholarship where he competed in javelin.

Barry Sanders – Sanders attended OSU from 1986 – 1988 and in his final season he won the Heisman Trophy while leading his team to the Holiday Bowl. Barry was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1st round of the 1989 NFL draft. Sanders retired only 10 seasons into his NFL career, but left a big legacy. If only he could have gone somewhere else in the NFL.

Robin Ventura – What can I say about this guy. 3 – time all american at Oklahoma State, 58 game hitting streak, led the Cowboys to the College World Series in 1987. Ventura has 6 gold gloves, once he hit 2 grand slams in 1 game, oh and he got in a fist fight with Nolan Ryan (aka the greatest pitcher of all- time)! I could not find the video on the internet, but i found pictures.

As you can see, this shall be a grand week. Don’t be lame. Go check out the stuff that the frats and sororities have been working pretty hard on. Who knows? Maybe you will run into Garth or Barry. I just hope that you don’t run into Robin. He might still be pretty angry about those shots from Nolan. Regardless if you see them, you should get some cotton candy during the walk around. That stuff is delicious. If you see us at the walk around, stop us and tell us that you love us. If you’re the first one or two to say it, you will win a prize.

We hope that you all enjoyed this.

Bryan and Brock

GO POKES!

A long time ago, in a city called Dallas where a man named J.R. got shot and the stars at night are big and bright, and people liked to greet each other with a firm handshake and a “how ’bout them Cowboys?” a man achieved his dream. That man was named Emmitt Smith, the dream was to be the NFL’s all time career leading rusher. Even Emmitt’s own teammate Michael Irvin was on record as saying words to the effect of, you do realize the difference between dreams and goals don’t you? But the Cowboys in those days were a juggernaut. Their defense caused frequent turnovers, their O-line opened up holes you could drive a truck through for their running backs and somewhere along the way to winning 3 Superbowls in 4 years the dream actually became a possibility. It was a long hard slog, that went on long after the Cowboy’s glory years, but through toughness and perserverance, Emmitt achieved his dream and became the all time career leading rusher in the NFL. Now it should be noted 2 things had to happen before Emmitt could realize his dream. 1: he actually broke the record for carries, before breaking the record for yards and 2: Barry Sanders retired…

Barry Sanders, the spectacular Detroit Lions running back who made watching the Lions fun even during the losing seasons, ended his career after 10 seasons with a career total of 15,269 yards, just 1,457 behind Walter Payton the (then) leading all time rusher in the NFL. At that time Emmitt Smith after 9 seasons had 12,566. It would not be until 2001, 3 years after Sanders retired and 12 NFL seasons into Smith’s career to Sanders 10 that Smith would accumulate enough yards to pass Sanders on the all time list. It would not be until 2002 that he broke the deceased Payton’s record to claim the rushing crown for himself.

Whatever the circumstances of Mr. Smith’s achievement, it still is a monumental one. And the question I want to ask here is this: Can anyone, now playing, beat that record?

A quick glance at the all-time rushing record shows that there are few contenders. Considering what a destructive position NFL running back is, it is hard to consider those that have yet to break the 10,000 yard mark. Those under it are not very likely to have a long enough career to ever get there. Especially when you consider that the average NFL career length is under 4 years.

Last year LaDainian Tomlinson looked like the best bet to get there, having amassed almost 12,000 yeards in just 8 season, but this year his numbers haven fallen of a cliff as he’s only been able to play in 2 games and has rushed for just 70 yards in those 2. Even if he returns to perfect health and his old form, it is likely that the explosive Darren Sproles will cut into his carries and yardage totals, raising questions about his ability to sustain his run of seasons in excess of 1,000 yards. Edgerrin James and Fred Taylor are both hovering around the 12,ooo yard mark as well, but Fred Taylor is 33 years old and James’ numbers have dropped off drastically as well after he turned 30 in 2008.

So for now the only real hope for a new rushing champion lies in LaDainian Tomlinson returning to health and breaking the 1,000 yard mark this season. Adrian Peterson is as viable a candidate as there can be in the short term with over 3,000 yards in his first 2 seasons, but he runs so violently that I imagine him having more of an Earl Campbell or Jim Brown type career, powerful and impressive, but shortened.

So in the final analysis there are a few to watch, but I wouldn’t bother watching too closely. In all likelihood we have not yet met the next all-time rushing yards leader, or if we have, we do not yet know him very well.

Quick Bits:

A Rush to bad judgment: Apparently conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh has expressed an interest in NFL ownership. Yes that Rush Limbaugh. The same one who was fired from ESPN for making racist comments about Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Donovan McNabb. The backlash has been almost instantaneous with Bart Scott, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Donovan McNabb already speaking out against Limbaugh. Hopefully the NFL will deny Limbaugh’s ambitions. Football broke the color line a year before Jackie Robinson did it in 1947. And has recently made advances, spearheading intiatives in order to increase the number of black head coaches in the league. It would be a shame to dishonor that tradition, and destroy the progress made by allowing an open racist into the league’s exclusive club of owners.

Tigers fall short: As a Detroit fan it was sad to see the Tigers fall short of making the playoffs this season, but 2 things salve that wound, 1: They didn’t deserve to make the playoffs after blowing a 7 game lead in September and a 3 game lead in October, and several 1 run leads in their playoff game against the Twins. The 2nd thing that salves the wound? Watching the Yankees wax the Twins in game 1 and knowing that it could have just as easily been the Tigers.

By: Lundin’ Bridge

The Madden football video game has been around for about 20 years, my entire lifespan. It has been the most popular football game to have ever been created and sells more and more copies each year. Up until 1999, John Madden had always been on the cover of this beloved game. That was until EA Sports decided that they would put the previous year’s best player on that year’s cover. Sounds like a good idea. After all, shouldn’t the best player in the NFL get some recognition? Well, it hasn’t worked so well. (Please enjoy the music below as you read.)

The Madden Curse is a supposed myth among football stating that if you appear on the cover for the next installment of the Madden video game your performance will suffer that season. Now for some, this may seem like utter bullshit. How can a video game dictate the performance of a player who was just coming off one of the greatest seasons of their career? It sounds completely far-fetched. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look then shall we? Keep in mind while reading that the year the cover came out is a year ahead of current time. (Thus, the Madden 2010 cover is really covering the 2009-2010 season)

- The first year of the Maddenless cover was occupied by Garrison Hearst, though he was only on select covers. That year (1998), Hearst was outstanding, finishing third in rushing yards. That seems innocent enough. However, in the Divisional playoffs against the Falcons, Hearst severely broke his ankle, causing him to miss two full seasons in the NFL.

Well okay, that was just a freak accident. Things happen. Or do they?

- For this cover Madden is the main figure depicted. However if you look over his left shoulder, you see Barry Sanders, the best RB in the NFL at the time. When the cover was made, Sanders was still in the NFL at the peak of his career. When the cover was released, Sanders had already abruptly retired (1999). Green Bay’s RB Dorsey Levens was put on later releases but had knee trouble throughout the season.

Now, why would Barry Sanders abruptly retire after just turning 30 and having the best years of his career? He claims he retired because he was on the hapless Lions (which is understandable) but is it more than a coincidence?

- Next, we have Eddie George, the Titans running back who, along with Steve McNair, made the Titans a powerhouse. That year (2000) George did pretty well for himself until the playoffs, when he bobbled a pass against the Ravens that got intercepted and returned for a touchdown and cost them the game. Whoops.George was only average the next year and failed to break 1,000 yards. The Titans missed the playoffs after going 7-9, and George was never the same after that.

Still doubting?

- Daunte Culpepper’s turn. For a time, the Vikings were unstoppable, having Culpepper at QB with Randy Moss and Hall of Famer Cris Carter as its receivers. That all changed in 2001. Culpepper’s knee blew out after a sub-par 4-7 start and he threw for 1,300 less yards and had 19 less touchdowns than the previous year(14 TDs – 13 INTs). The Vikings finished the year with a 5-11 record, its worst record since 1984.

Culpepper was one of the best QBs in the NFL. Not only did he have a gun for an arm, but he could scramble for yards and buy more time in the pocket. After Madden, Culpepper was never even close to what he once was and now is a washed up version of himself, sitting on the bench.

- Marshall Faulk. Super Bowl champion. Outstanding resume for a young player. The game’s best RB. And then he went downhill. After gracing Madden, Faulk rushed for 430 less yards and had four less touchdowns compared to 2001, even though he played the same amount of games. It was Faulk’s worst season since 1996, and because of ankle injuries throughout his career, he would never amass his once great running skills.

Yet another one bites the dust at the prime of their career. You’ll probably recognize the next fellow. Perhaps he’ll fare better?

- (Drum roll please) Hereeeee’s Michael Vick. Before we get into the dog fighting scandal, let’s take a look at 2003, a year after Michael Vick was aweing us with his play. In ‘03, ONE DAY after Madden hit the shelves, Vick broke his fibula and missed 11 games. He only played 5 games and the Falcons went 5-11.

Vick had incredible promise after coming out of VT, but this injury, along with a little scuffle with some pit bulls, caused Vick to lose his magic. Who knows if he’ll ever be the same.

- Ray Lewis was the next to grace the cover. Now you may be saying yourself, well Ray is still one of the games best. However, in 2004, he had no interceptions for the first time in his career.

He may have gotten away easy, but he still was affected. And who could forget when he killed that girl and got away with it..

For this cover, Donovan McNabb got the call. McNabb was certain that he would not succumb to this well-known curse. Nice try Donovan. McNabb suffered a sports hernia in week 9 that caused him to miss the rest of the season. Not only did the Eagles not make the playoffs for the first time since ‘99, but they finished in last place in their division with the record of 6-10.

McNabb hasn’t really done much for the Eagles since then and can never seem to get his team to the Super Bowl. Considering how hostile Philly fans are, he may not have much longer in the Green and White.

STILL DON”T BELIEVE ME?

- Next up, Shaun Alexander, who was coming off the best season of his career and would be the most sought after running back in fantasy football. You may remember he broke the single season touchdown record? Well in 2006, instead of breaking another record, he broke his foot. He had the lowest stats of his career since his rookie season and would later be cut by the Seahawks.

Franchise player? Not after Madden.

- After fans voted off LaDainian Tomlinson in fear of the curse, Vince Young took over as a replacement for this cover. Young threw 17 INTs to go with his 9 touchdowns, which isn’t terrible. However, Vince seemed to lose his mind during the off-season and lost his job to the elder Kerry Collins.

A once promising QB is now a mystery to the Titans.

- In honor of his famed career, EA Sports picked Brett Favre to graze the cover even though he was retired at the time. But as we all know, Brett Favre doesn’t retire. Favre led the Jets to an 8-3 record, which was good, but supposedly injured his shoulder somewhere in the middle of the season. Whatever the excuse may be, Favre absolutely sucked down the stretch and the Jets missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

Not a good idea to put a senior citizen QB on the cover with the curse going around.

- And so we come to this year. For the first time in Madden history, two players were put on the cover: Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu. Would these two offensive and defensive powerhouses break the curse? Well, they’re already half way there to another cursed cover. Polamalu suffered a sprained MCL during the first game of the year against the Titans and will be out for 3-6 weeks if all goes well. Who knows how his play will suffer after his return.

Thus concludes the current facts of the Madden curse. Once a player hits the cover he most surely will suffer a setback. Some have fared better than others, but all have succumbed to the curse. Some people may still say that this is just a series of unfortunate coincidences and that the curse doesn’t exist. That may be so, but I wouldn’t want to be Larry Fitzgerald right now. And looking ahead, I wouldn’t want to be Adrian Peterson either. He may be the victim for 2011.

Greatest Rbs ever…#8, #7, #6… So now we inch closer and closer to the proverbial “Greatest Run

Greatest Rbs ever…#8, #7, #6…

So now we inch closer and closer to the proverbial “Greatest Running Back EVER”…

Before we continue, I wanted to revisit the reasoning I used to come up with this list. I realize there may be 100 or more different ways to do this, but it just seems to me that when you really sit down and think about it, there has to be some acceptable form of elements that truly make a great running back, and then there are factors that separate the greatest from the rest of that pack.

Consider how many running backs have played at least a year in the NFL. There is no way I could sit down and go over every single back, but then, I would not need to. Many people already have ideas of what makes a guy great, so from that list I can put together my ranking, based on four basic elements.

The first is team accomplishments. As I said before, if you are great, then your team must be great. This is a team sport, so team goals are critical to determine if a running back is good, very good, great or the greatest. I give points for three parts of this element. If a back has won a Superbowl (or NFC Championship prior to the Superbowl era) I give him 10 points PER Championship. If he got there, but lost, I give him 5 points. If he made it to the semi finals (or the AFC/NFC Championship in the Superbowl era) I give him 2 points for each game. So a back can score 0 points if he never got his team in these fields, or over 40, depending on what his team did.

The second is Individual stats. Team stuff is cool, but you still gotta separate yourself from the pack. It proves that you weren’t a by-product of the system, and establishes you as the best in your position. I award points in three categories of this element; total yards gained, touchdowns and average yards per carry. If any back is the best in any of those categories, I give him 10 points for each category. If he is in the top 5, I award 7 points. If in the top 10, I give him 5 points. If a running back is in the top 20 all time I give him 3 points, and if he is in the top 30 he gets 1 point.

This means that the max points a back can get in this element is 30, and of course the minimum being 0. You’ll find that many of the great ones are usually somewhere in the middle of this element.

The third element is Individual awards. This is kinda tricky because nowdays they come up with all kinds of ways to award players. I mean, McDonalds could have a “Happy Meal Player of the Year” and create some award that looks like a burger. So what I did was narrow the awards to the main ones. I awarded 10 points each time a player got the MVP award or Superbowl MVP award. This is the highest honor the NFL can bestow. I know there are others, but these are the best ones. I then award 7 points for Offensive MVP for each year a player wins it. I also awarded 5 points for the AFC and NFC Player of the Year, and 2 points for the Rookie of the Year. I know a couple of these awards have been changed, but in the bulk of the NFL history, these were important. I also award one point for every Pro-Bowl a player has been selected to. Whether he goes or not is up to him but he was selected.

This means that one can rack up a lot of great points. Many of the great ones will shine in this element.

And finally there is the Era Adjustment. Simply put, I deduct one point for every decade since the player has retired, starting with the 90’s. For example, if a running back retired in 1987, then I have to deduct 2 points from his total score. Why? Because the running theory (fact?) is that players today are better in nearly every way than those before them. I don’t think we’re gonna get an argument that guys playing today, 2008 are equal or lesser than guys that played back in 1948. Players today are bigger, faster, meaner and more skilled than those before them. So a player can lose as much as 7 or 8 points if he is on this list. If a player has retired in 2000 or is still playing, he loses no points. There is no penalty for anyone who has left the game from 2000 to now.

So, having shared that, let’s continue the countdown!

	#8 Barry Sanders: 55 points

I have several football cards of Barry Sanders, and I am wishing that one day I can sell them and buy a yacht! This guy was THE face of the Detroit Lions and clearly one of the greatest running backs to ever suit up. It’s actually amazing that he and Thurman Thomas were actually in the same backfield in college. This quite machine was the fear of every defensive back, and even when the Lions were no good, everybody knew that Barry Sanders was going to be fed the ball…and yet, they STILL could not stop him. When he retired, the city of Detroit hung their collective heads in sorrow. Even the NFL had to pause at the premature retirement of this incredible player. What would have been if he played just another year or two…

Why not higher? This is a tough question for me because before I did this ranking, I would have sworn that Barry Sanders would have been EASILY in the top 5, maybe top 3. But a very key element stands out…team accomplishments. A great player MUST be able to give him team a chance to win championships, or at least get to them. Barry Sanders scores only 2 points in the team accomplishments, and loses one point in era adjustment. The Detroit Lions could never capitalize on this great talent, and wasn’t even going to let him go to another team. I guess misery loves company, but had they given Barry Sanders a chance to go to a WINNING team, he’s EASILY be one of the greatest ever.

Why on the list? This isn’t even a debate, Barry Sanders is one of the greatest ever. He may not have scored well in the team accomplishments element, but NOBODY scored better in the individual stats and he scores a ton of points in the team awards element. If I left out the team accomplishments element, he’d probably be the best on the list. Of all the backs without a Superbowl appearance or NFC Championship experience, he IS the best.

	#7 Terrell Davis: 60 points

This one will get some arguments, and I can respect that. But to be considered the greatest, there has to be a some indication of greatness in the three elements. A player like Terrell Davis. If John Elway was reading this, I am pretty sure he would give an “amen” to the fact that Davis was one of the final pieces to the puzzle to not one, but TWO Superbowls. This sixth round draft pick of 1995 helped the Broncos to the Superbowl only a couple of years after he got into the league. In the mid 90’s this was THE best running back in the NFL and the individual awards proved it. Had he not had the injuries, we might have singing his praises even louder.

Why not higher? If there was anything that kept Terrell Davis from being higher, it was the individual stats. Two Superbowl wins gives him 20 points right off the bat, and he was highly decorated with a few MVP awards and other individual awards. In fact he scored 35 points here. If I ranked these guys based on that number, he would be tied for #4. But his shortened career seemed to be the main reason why he is not higher.

Why on the list? There are a lot of people that would be angry that Terrell Davis is above some of the others I have listed. I truly understand that, so I cannot argue, but the reason he is where he is was because when he played, he was great. If I compared him to Barry Sanders, he would be better by team accomplishments by a landslide, and slightly better in individual awards. Part of being great is also making your team great, and say what you want about Terrell Davis, he DID get the Denver Broncos to the Superbowl twice.

	#6 Walter Payton: 61 points

“Sweetness” will forever be an icon of the Chicago Bears and easily one of the most beloved running backs of ALL TIME. On that team with a cast of characters, Walter Payton was the shining example of what a profession was about. He made me a fan before the Bears went to the Superbowl, and I personally think Mike Ditka did a grave injustice by not allowing Walter Payton to score a touchdown in the Superbowl. I remember hearing all the fans chanting for Walter Payton to score when the Bears were in the red zone; we ALL wanted Walter Payton to get a touchdown in his only Superbowl…but Ditka didn’t do it. Unless somebody tells me that Sweetness didn’t WANT to score a touchdown, I hold Mike Ditka responsible for not allowing one of the most beloved backs the NFL has ever seen to score a touchdown in the greatest game of his career. I will ALWAYS have respect for Walter Payton.

Why not higher? The actual spots between 5 spots here is paper thin. Walter Payton is one point behind #5, and 2 points behind #4 and #3 (there’s your hint that there is another tie). The reason why Payton isn’t higher is not for what he lacked but simply because the others did a little more. Let’s also add that he lost 2 points by era adjustment. This could have put him in the top 5. He scored 12 points with team accomplishments, but remember for awhile, the Bears were an average team with a great player. It took awhile for Walter Payton and the Bears to get to the promised land. He scores 17 out of 30 in the individual stats and gets 34 points in the individual awards element. This is a great score, it’s just that there are a few that are better…but not many.

Why on the list? Anybody that is on the top 5 in yards and touchdowns MUST be on this list. This cat was a legend and a hero to some of the players playing today. How many running backs playing now had posters of Walter Payton on their wall? If this was a list of the classiest running backs ever, this guy is in my top 3. He is also one of my favorite running backs so I might have a slight bias to him. But Walter Payton is easily one of the greatest ever, and most people won’t argue that at all.

So, we are now about to enter the top 5 running backs of all time. The next three I am going to cover next time are separated by one point. Two are tied and one is just a single point behind.

Remember folks, greatness isn’t JUST about stats, it is about what he adds to a team. A great player has to elevate his team to greatness. In fact, of the top 10, only Barry Sanders is the only running back with no championship awards. This actually speaks greatly to how good this guy was, even though his team was…well…bad.

So as we continue to count it down, we will be revealing even greater running backs of the NFL. Hope you’ll continue to join me. Until next time…..
