TODAY is Shankarji’s b’day-15th October….and here(IN THE PHOTO) are the panch pandavs of hindi film music….L-R-hasrat, jaikishan, shankar, shailendra and raj capturing all, lest they run….yes, they went one by one…shailendra started the way to heaven, followed by jaikishan, shankar, raj kapoor, hasrat….their remains are there in all corners of India in the form of immortal songs.

Nehruji wished that his ashes be spread all over Himalayas and other mountains….but our panch-parmeshwar reached every nook and corner of not only India but many parts of the world thru their music…..agewise Shankar was second after Hasrat….THEN THE TRIO.

WE REMEMBER WITH GLORY, Shankarji, for what he gave to hindi film music which others cud not give…..To recall his birthday, i wud like to mention a hillarious incident when Shankarji had to keep his watch to ”Dhondu Bhelpuriwala” at choupatti, after eating Bhelpuri by all the four, S-J,S & H…incidentally, nobody had the money in their pockets, and everybody thought, that someone will pay for the Bhel…..By this time Barsaat had already released….They saw each other’s face..and ultimately, Shankarji had to take his old watch and handed over to Dhondu……

Then came the busy time… after Barsaat, came ”Nagina”..and by this time Shankaerji was the owner of a car….When after few month, he was passing the choupatti way, he remembered his watch he ransomed to Dhondu…. Shankarji offered the payment and asked the watch back….By this time he came to be known by the hindi film world…..Dhondu, on his part, recognizing Shankarji, said, ”Achchha to aap he Barsaat ke music director the”…and treated him like a guest, but refused to hand over the said watch…He said ”ham samjha lafanga log hoga…..woh ghadiyal to aapun zindagi bhar apne pas rakhega…aap hazar rupaiya bhi dega to wapas nahin dega”.

Later he came to know less as Dhondu bhel puri walla, but Shankarji’s watch walla……MUSIC CAME, MUSIC STAYED, MUSIC GONE BUT THE MUSIC SCORED BY SHANKAR JAIKISHAN IS THE GREATEST LEGACY OF THE HINDI FILM MUSIC, WHICH HAS COME TO STAY.

and WHAT ROMANTICISM, SHANKARJI HAS STARTED WITH ”PYAR HUA IQRAR HUA” in Shri 420, carried on to CHORI CHORI as ”yeh raat bheegi bheegi”, ”jehan main jaat hoon”, and Jai’s” Aaja sanam”, was followed by their disciple Dattaram in ‘Parvarish’-”masti bhara hai saman, aakhon mein aa ja”, by Kalyanji Anandji ”mere dil mein hai ek baat” and Madan Mohan ”vo chand muskaya, sitare sharmaaye, hamara bhi dil na machalane lage”…and may be more…as Shankarji’s romanticism stayed…..LONG LIVE S-J’s LEGACY.

 There are many Filmy families in Bollywood today, The Bachchan’s, the Deol’s, but none of them come even close to the “Real” First Family of Moviedom, and that is the Kapoor Family. Prithviraj’s Kapoor’s clan has lived to the expectations of everyone right from the avdent of this Khandaan. Prithviraj himself was a decent actor , Shashi and Shammi Kapoor gave many memorable performances and hits during their respective careers, But his eldest son Raj Kapoor was the person who immortalized the aura of the Kapoors.

Shammi Married an older woman and actress called Geeta Bali who he was madly in love with but after her death and a lot of provocation from his family and because of his young kids, he married a much younger Neela.

Shashi Kapoor had a very successful career and married a British girl,Jennifer Kendal(who is no more) and had three kids.Prithviraj Kapoor set up Prithvi Theater after and Sahshi Kapoor is still loving taking care of it day in day out with his daughter Sanjana.

There two lines from Raj Kapoor’s most ambitious project,”Mera Naam Joker” summed up his feelings for the industry and the masses producing one hit after the other under his R.K. Films Banner. His creative talent in movies like Satyam,Shivam, Sundaram and Raam Teri Ganga Maili was often subject of harsh criticism because of the “so called nudity”. His movies like Anari, Shree 420, Chori Chori, Aag, Aah, Jaagte Raho, Sangam, Barsaat,etc are classic.For me he was a much bigger star than Amitabh Bachchan. He was the real Show stopper, the real showman of Bollywood. He was a grand man who loved life king size.He was the guy who attracted the masses abroad, he was well recognized all over the world.

His kids by no means were duds. Rishi a.k.a. Chintu (extreme left) and Randhira.k.a. Daboo (extreme right) had their own fan following. Rishi had a breakthrough performance in Mera Naam Joker as the younger Raj Kapoor but with the super duper hit Bobby he ventured into mainstream cinema as an adult. While Randhir who made his debut much before  Rishi has many hits to his name like Ponga Pandit, Jawani Diwani, Raampur ka Lakshman, etc and had the honor of directing his grandfather and father in a movie in which he too starred called “Kal, Aaj aur Kal”

Rajeev a.k.a. Chimpoo (the one is white) the youngest of the lot did not have a successful career infront of the cameran but is good behind it like his father.

Rishi married a big star of her time Soniya a.k.a. Neetu Singh who had also been a child actor and a famous one at that.While Randhir too married an actress Babita Shivdasani when she was in her prime.

Raj Kapoor’s two daughters are married and well settled today. His grandchildren though are bearing the Kapoor Flame today. Karisma Kapoor (Lolo) is already a known face in Bollywood with a career spanning over a decade, Kareena (Bebo) has established herself as a good actress, while the latest entrant in Bollywood is Ranbir Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor’s son) who has just begun his promising journey.

These facts prove that Illustrious Kapoor’s are in fact the First Family of Bollywood. Collectively what they have done for the indian cinema no one has even come close to it and probably never will be.

Now Twinkle and Rinke’s mother Dimple Kapadia is one who is in no hurry to lose her oomph factor when she came back with a strong performance in Dil Chahta Hai.

Malaika Arora worked up a  storm with her Chaiyya Chaiyya sequence in Dil Se and kept it stylish on MTV Style Check. She  is still sleek and keeping it stylish after having her son Arhaan.

Madhuri Dixit returned with Aaja Nachle Hai but is now playing busy mom to two sons, Arin and Ryan.

Kajol said family comes first when she and hubby Ajay Devgan had Nysa. She made her comeback in Fanaa and was seen in  U, Me Aur Hum. My Name Is Khan is her release in 2009.

Juhi Chawla keeps her family out of the picture.  She and Jai Mehta have  a daughter Jhanvi. She gave some of her best performances after marriage with 3 Deewarein, My Brother Nikhil and Jhankaar Beats.

Karishma Kapoor, was the blue-eyed babe of Bollywood (literally). She married and had a baby girl Samaira. Things turned ugly when she separated from her husband and they fought over the baby. But they stuck together.

Sushmita Sen went where no Miss Universe tread, when she adopted Renee and became a single mother in her twenties. She made a few movies and is waiting for the release Dulha Mil Gaya.

Bipasha Basu is one of the most successful model turned actress. This Bengal beauty started her career as an ordinary model in Kolkata. With the help of famous model Mehr Jessia she contested  in Godrez Cinthol Super model contest. She won the first prize and was sent to New York by the organisers. In New York she had a successful carer.

She returned back to India and started her filmy career with the movie Ajnabee. After this movie she went act in a South Indian movie Takkri Donga with Mahesh Babu. The same year she starred in six Bollywood films including the super hit films Jism and Raaz. These two movies gave her some good image, fame and place in Bollywood’s top heroines list.

For the next two years she suffered a lack of proper hits. But she received super hit movie Barsaat in 2005. She featured in a double role for the movie Dhoom 2. She was nominated for Filmfare for her superb acting in Corporate. So many praised her expressions in Race movie. Recently we saw her in Aa Dekhen Zara. Pankh and Lamha films are in post production.

There are so many well known songs in “Barsaat” (1949) that I am often not sure if I have posted a particular song from this movie or not. I just realised that I had not posted this song from “Barsaat” so far.

Lata sounds wonderfully fresh voiced in this song. In fact, it is song like this that helped Lata ( then a junior singer) become the hottest property among female singers in a matter of a few years.

This song was written by Shailendra and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. The song begins with Raj Kapoor and Premnath driving away in a car and then Nimmi is shown singing this song.

This song is one of the many timeless classics from this movie.

Raj Kapoor’s name  is synonymous with Bollywood.

He had a child like quality that tugged at one’s heart. He reached dizzying heights in the 50s  and upwards and was seen in classics like Barsaat, Awaara, Mera Naam Joker, Anari and Shree 420.

Awaara (1951) had many Kapoor elements. While Raj Kapoor directed, produced and acted in it, it also starred his grandfather Dewan Bashwanath Kapoor, his father Prithviraj Kapoor, his younger brother Shashi Kapoor and his lady love Nargis. It was a poor boy falls in love with a rich girl story.

Mera Naam Joker (1970) was a poignant story about a clown Raju who wears his heart on his sleeve, only to have it broken.

Kapoor passed away while making the movie Henna in 1988. The movie was completed by his son Randhir Kapoor and released in 1991.

His story was carried forward by his sons Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor.

Today I want to divert your attention to the top Box-Office earners from the year 1940-2007. This list will be in the chronological order. The list will provide you with the name of the movie along with their net gross collections that year. In the year 2008, the highest earner was Ghajini which is still running and earning profit. So I have not included it in the list. The list is as follows:

This song is a wonderful dance song. And when one looks at the year of picturisation (1949), one is bound to be impressed that a song and dance like this was picturised 60 years ago, when a picturisation like this certainly called for great imagination, since technology those days was far primitive.

This is a 5 minute long dance sequence, and the song begins only after two minutes when Premnath joins the dancer Cuckoo. The song Patli Kamar hai is sung by Premnath in Mukesh’s voice ( is it really Mukesh’s voice ?) It appears that the lady who is in love with Premnath is outside the hall watching Premnath dance with this lady dancer called Cuckoo. It is this lady outside who sings in the voice of Lata. So this song is a duet song in absentia, in the sense that the duo singing the song are not present in one place. In modern day, it would be called tele singing, I think. I do not know what it was called those days.

Premnath is almost a parallel hero in this movie. Raj Kapoor was a very good friend of Premnath and the Raj Kapoor would often go to Premnath’s house to discuss the movie. The real reason of course was that Raj Kapoor had his eye on Premnath’s sister. And Raj Kapoor actually ended up marrying Krishna, Premnath’s sister. Yes, even those we knew as oldtimers had acted like lovelorn kids when then they were young.

There are many rainsongs in Bollywood, and one would expect that the title song of a movie called “Barsaat” (rain) would certainly be a rain song. But there is no such luck.

This title song from “Barsaat” is a dance song, and that is all. The dancer is Nimmi. She and her dancing colleagues sing and dance to entertain raj kapoor and Premnath who appear to be citybred people and hence worthy of being treated royally. And that meant the two were seated in a “khatiya” and treated to this song and dance.

Raj Kapoor and Premnath sit through much of the performane, more interested in munching their brand of “popcorn or whatever it was that they munched those days.

The duo do not seem much interested in the song and dance. Premnath is particularly bored and after a few moments he gets up and drags Raj Kapoor with him to leave the performance, much to the disappointment of Nimmi.

Just like most modern listeners do not bother much about such songs, so did Raj kapoor and Prenmath. They certainly were far ahead of their times.

I can barely believe that this song is 60 years old, and that it was regarded as an old song even during my childhood. But just listening to this song even today makes me feel like I am getting a breath of fresh air.

This song is magic, an iconic song among iconic songs. It is from that perennial favourite “Barsaat”. I wonder how many great songs this movie had. I have given up counting them. Shankar Jaikishan was the music director and Lata the singer. And what about the lyricist who penned this memorable song ? It was someone called Ramesh Shastri. Kudos to him for writing this much loved, much sung and much copied lyrics.

Like most songs that I discuss in this blog, I liked the song just by listening to the audio, without watching the video. Now that I have watched the video, 60 years after everyone else must have watched it ( me the laziest among all those when it comes to watching the videos, but then I belonged to the era where people judged songs by their audio rather than their video). And I find that the video is picturised very well. The actress in this very well known song is an unknown lady called Bimala Kumari. She is seen joyously holding up a dupatta in the air. My daughter would have exclaimed-” but it is a white dupatta”, but I take the word of Lata ji that this is indeed a laal dupatta that Bimala Kumari is holding in her hand in this black and white classic movie.

So here is this timeless classic for everyone’s listening and viewing pleasure. And this is an appropriate time to post this song too, as today Lata ji is celebrating her 80th birthday.

कल ऑफिस के काम से बाहर जाना था. गार्ड को बोला की ड्राईवर को गाडी निकालने के लिये कह दे. कोई दो बजे खाना खा कर निकला तभी बहुत जोर से बादल गरजे और झमाझम बारिश शुरू. दस मिनट इंतज़ार किया लेकिन बारिश अपना यौवन दिखा रही थी. बारिश की वजह से ट्रैफिक जाम और दुर्घटना का खतरा भी बढ जाता है. काम बहुत जरूरी था मैंने ड्राईवर को कहा, “यार निकाल लो गाडी, जो होगा देखा जायेगा काम तो करना ही है”. हालांकि ड्राईवर ज्यादा खुश नहीं था लेकिन उसके पास मना करने का कोई कारण नहीं था.

काम खत्म करके कोई साढे पाँच बजे ऑफिस वापिस आ गया था. बारिश के साथ जो संघर्ष कल किया था उस पर आज एक छोटी सी कविता लिख डाली.
