JT Holmes performs a BASE jump

Squaw Valley has an audacious event planned to celebrate the simultaneous anniversaries of their 60th year in operation, and 50th year since they hosted the Olympics. The celebration will be held Saturday, November 21, beginning at 2 pm.

Kicking off the festivities on opening day will be an historic BASE jump by JT Holmes. BASE (an acronym derived from Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth) jumping is a potentially high risk activity where the jumper leaps from a fixed object high above the ground with a packed parachute, which is then deployed at the critical moment.

This historic BASE jump will be done legally and is a central part of the 60th anniversary festivities to be held on Squaw Valley’s opening day of the ski season. Holmes will perform the BASE jump from a point just below the Cable Car’s Tower 1.

According to Savannah Cowley of Squaw Valley, Shane McConkey had originally been asked to perform the jump. Sadly, McConkey, a greatly admired professional skier, died last year at the age of 40 during a ski-BASE jump in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy on March 26, 2009, after failing to deploy his parachute due to a separate equipment malfunction associated with his skis. Nancy Cushing, owner of Squaw Valley, asked Holmes to jump in his place to honor McConkey and celebrate 60 years of skiing at Squaw Valley.

Holmes, a good friend of McConkey, is a professional skier based out of Squaw Valley. Holmes did his first BASE jump with McConkey and the two became jumping partners. Holmes has been featured in numerous ski films and, like McConkey, has been an innovator in ski-BASEing, where BASE jumping is combined with skiing.

Ski-BASEing was invented after the 1977 James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me”, starring Roger Moore, featured a stunt involving a skier jumping off a cliff and parachuting to the ground. This first ski-BASE jump was an actual jump performed by Squaw Valley’s Rick Sylvester on a slope in Canada on Baffin Island. The stunt intrigued adventurous skiers and BASE jumpers like McConkey and Holmes, and a new extreme sport was created. Video footage of a successful McConkey ski-BASE jump will surely take your breath away.

Jonny Moseley, a moguls champion and Olympic gold medalist in the 1998 Olympics held in Nagano, Japan, will be hosting the celebration on the KT Sundeck from 2-3:45 pm. Moseley was a member of the Squaw Valley Freestyle Ski Team when he won the first Junior National title in Freestyle Skiing, and joined the U.S. Ski Tem at 18. He can be seen skiing and heard narrating the current release of the Warren Miller movie, Dynasty, which can be seen in venues around the country. Holmes is also featured in the movie.

After an accident during a BASE jump on Nov. 11, aerialist Ueli Gegenschatz has died in a Swiss hospital.

Um dos livros que gostei de ler sobre a mecânica quântica, o famoso Quem Somos Nós? (What the Bleep do we know?), sugere que você faça o exercício de se concentrar “naquilo que você acredita que jamais será. O que você gostaria, mas entende como impossível para a sua vida?”. Outra frase celebre diz que são as perguntas que movem o mundo. Quando me fiz esta pergunta, conclui que base jumping era a resposta.

Saltar de um obstáculo com um pára-quedas – Bulding (Prédio), Antenna (Antena), Spam (Ponte) ou Earth (Montanhas e penhascos) = BASE – parece algo que eu jamais terei condições de fazer. Mas me fascina.  Você salta e no segundo seguinte já está 9,8 metros abaixo de onde saltou, acelerando a esta distância por segundo ao quadrado, ou seja, a cada segundo 9,8 metros por segundo mais rápido, até a velocidade terminal da queda livre: 55 metros por segundo (em condições normais).

O equipamento de base jumping é diferente dos pára-quedas normais. Entre outras coisas, ele abre bem mais rápido: cerca de 30 metros após acionado o mecanismo, contra 150 metros dos tradicionais.

Fiz um único salto de pára-quedas até o momento, e para começar a sequer pensar em base jumping, você precisa de pelo menos cerca de 200 saltos, não existem regras neste sentido, mas você provavelmente vai morrer se começar muito antes disso. Base jumping não tolera erros, então tenho um longo caminho pela frente,  mas,  para quem tinha medo de altura, este foi um belo começo.

Base Jumping exige tanto estudo e treinamento porque você precisa controlar muito bem o pára-quedas: os problemas geralmente ocorrem após a abertura do equipamento, quando o atleta perde o controle e se choca contra o obstáculo, e não raramente são fatais. Três dos meus base jumpers favoritos são Dwain Weston, Roland Slim e Jeb Corliss. Os dois primeiros já morreram praticando, Jeb Corliss ainda está vivo, envolvido em um projeto chamado The WingSuit Landing Project.

I posted a few days ago about wunderkind Alex Honnold and his solo ascents sans ropes.

I thought that was the only post I wanted to write on behalf of the ReelRockTours.

Changed my mind. And, quite honestly, there would be a perfect place in hell for me by not mentioning the  Nat Geo presentation of Sean Leary’s moving tribute to the memory of his lover and fellow climber, Roberta Nunes.

This Nat Geo presentation was the complete opposite of their portrayal of Honnold which highlighted technical eye candy and offbeat humor. The tribute to Roberta Nunes enters the realm of almost folkloric proportions. Think Tristan and Isolde.

Both Sean Leary and Roberta Nunes were world class rock climbers.

Sean Leary made a promise to Roberta that should she ever die before Sean that Sean would spread her ashes among the mountains in Patagonia.  Several days after this somber exchange, Nunes was involved in a fatal car crash. Eerie.

What takes place following Nunes untimely passing, is nothing short of remarkable and again worthy of a Shakespearean play. After 2 years of profound grieving, Sean and two of his buddies, Renan Ozturk and Cedar Wright, screw up the courage to trek to Patagonia, forge new terrain in Roberta’s name and disperse her ashes to the blustery, robust winds of Patagonia.

French author, Muriel Barbery, writes:

How many years do we spend forgetting the passion we breathed into any activity that held a promise of pleasure? Why are we now so rarely capable of such total commitment, such elation, such flights of charming lyricism…

For Sean and his friends, the initial trip to Patagonia was replete with bad weather, low spirits and sadness. The longing Sean experienced for his climbing partner and lover was evinced painfully and transparently on his face. With inclement weather, the men were stuck to bouldering and short climbs near their base.

Weeks passed. Still no opening in the weather.

And, with a day left to their trip, an opening in the weather presented itself. I cannot explain how they scaled this virgin rock in short order; but, they did. From Sender Films’s Blog:

But then the weather and the climbers pulled through. As the clouds held back and the sun shone bright over two days, Cedar and Renan sent a killer first ascent on Mochito. Then Stanley wingsuited from the summit of El Mocho, one of the few BASE jumps anyone has done in the range. As the chute opened, Roberta’s ashes were released into the mountains. The thermals almost blew Stanley back to Chalten, but the Andean condors guided him to safety. He stuck it. We stuck it.

Ok. I know no one who would do this for me (except maybe my crazy mother). I share this story as a testimony to commitment and perseverance. There are no words to duly underscore the power of this love, a love forged in stone.

As many of us, often remark how unexceptional our lives have become, I defer you to Sean and Roberta. Take note and live fully.

Janine and I spent the winter of 2000 living in Moab, Utah. Our address was wherever we parked our van and we were free to roam and photograph anything and everything in the amazing Utah desert.

Just outside town and along the corridor of the Colorado River are the steep towers of Wall Street. There we met some Swedish base jumpers who invited us along to photograph them for a day. We hiked to the top of the wall, shot them prepping their gear, and then photographed the actual jump. Back then, before being inundated with YouTube videos of all things extreme, seeing someone jump off a cliff was not at all normal, in fact it still isn’t – when seen in person.

After they jumped we had still to walk down. While doing so we passed, and said hello, to two other base jumpers headed up. Then we realized that if we hurried down, we might catch them as they jump. Our arrival back to the bottom was perfectly timed with Jimmy Pouchert’s exit. I remember having seconds to get the camera out and an image framed before he jumped. Later, when we first saw the photo on the lightbox, we new we had something special. Thanks to its simplicity, it reveals what it means to base jump.

Oui oui, la “Folle Quête de la Branche ” Je la sens encore me caresser délicatement le rectum, la branche. Si tout le monde connaît l’expression du “cul bordé de nouilles”, Hugo et moi avons fait les frais de l’antithèse de cette dernière. Matérialisée en une nouvelle expression qui souligne une malchance récurrente et un sentiment de viol profond de la part du destin : “Ouch I feel like a fuckin’ branch in my ass!!” (Aïe, je sens comme une grosse branche dans mon derrière!! pour traduire gentiment)

Les premiers symptômes de “La Branche” sont apparus sur le site d’escalade de Guebershwihr, alors qu’Hugo, Damien et moi tentions désespérément d’installer une highline dans la vielle carrière. Après une nuit à percer des trous dans les rochers au marteau et au forêt (vous remarquerez que l’outil situé derrière le forêt, qui n’est habituellement pas un marteau, nous manquait cruellement), nous avons découvert le lendemain matin à notre grand regret que les ancrages ne prenaient pas dans le grès trop friable. La défaite fut totale – elle l’était déjà pour dire vrai – quand nous avons découvert que nous avions autant de longe que de perforateur. Pour les néophytes, les longes servent d’intermédiaires entre la slack et les ancrages, on peut donc les considérer comme indispensables. Ce jour là elles étaient plutôt introuvables. L’entreprise de la highline alsacienne s’arrêta donc à se stade alors que la Folle Quête de la Branche prenait son élan.

Le lendemain, Hugo et moi avons pris la route en direction des Gorges du Verdon après s’être rendus compte que nous n’avions ni goujons, ni plaquettes pour poser les ancrages de notre future highline. Et le lundi n’est pas propice aux achats de dernière minutes par chez nous. Bien conscients du détour, nous étions prêts à nous rendre à Marseille pour acheter le matériel au Vieux Campeur le lendemain matin avant de retourner dans le Verdon. La branche s’est faite brindille pour un temps, alors que Julien nous annonçait que nous pouvions passer à Die où il venait de se faire livrer exactement le matériel qu’il nous manquait. Une bonne nouvelle que je j’ai transmis immédiatement à mon copilote brésilien dans un anglais impeccable : “Okay Hugo, don’t worry about the anchors, we are going to Die” (Ne t’inquiète pas pour les ancrages, nous allons à Die/mourrir, vous noterez le jeu de mot des plus subtil)

Après une nuit passée à Die, nous avons repris la route à travers le Vercors en direction du Verdon. Le traffic routier des vacances scolaires sonne comme quelque-chose de lointain pour moi qui n’ai pas vraiment pour habitude de me rendre dans les hauts lieux touristiques comme le Sud ou bien… le Sud. Et bien ce jour là, il a sonné beaucoup trop près de nous. La remontée des gorges fut-elle ponctuée de nombreuses insultes – toujours courtoises – sur fond de “Kill all the Assholes” et “The Song That Don’t Go Fast” de S.O.D.

Julien et Jelena nous attendaient tranquillement en siestant dans leur camion sur un petit parking de la route des crêtes, à deux pas des spots de highline que Ju avait préalablement repérés. Ne restait plus qu’à définir lequel nous convenait le mieux. Après mûres réflexions, notre choix s’est porté sur un spot en forme de fer à cheval avec 125 mètres d’à-pic pour 28 mètres de long, facile d’accès et surmonté d’une croix. Une grosse croix faite avec deux grosses branches!

L’installation de la highline sonna le retour triomphale de la branche et de nos irritations annales. Les Gorges du Verdon étant un spot réputé pour l’escalade, les parois sont relativement bien fournies en plaquettes et ancrages divers. Nous avons donc décidé d’utiliser des ancrages déjà existants afin de se faciliter la vie et de gagner du temps. Mais la branche ne le voyait pas de cet oeil… A la première mise en tension, Hugo et moi tirions comme deux mules sur les poulies pour tendre la sangle de White Magic aussi dur que possible, quand un petit “cling” retint notre attention. Jelena et Ju, de l’autre coté du précipice, affichaient la même expression d’incrédulité que nous. Un ancrage devait avoir bougé, c’était la solution la plus plausible. Nous nous sommes remis au turbin, toutes veines dehors pour entendre cette fois-ci un “Cling-Shlack-Clong” auquel ni Hugo et moi n’avons prêté attention. Peut-être parce que nous venions d’être projetés à terre (ou plutôt à rocher pour Hugo) par la highline qui venait de lâcher. Pour être exact, ce n’était pas la sangle qui a cédé comme le croyait Hugo, mais un maillon qui la retenait à la poulie. “Ouch! The branch hurt me so bad!!” Ca aurait pu s’arrêté là… Mais non. Quand la branche est dans la place, elle y reste. Ce qui aurait pu n’être qu’un malheureux contre-temps, s’avéra être la fin tragique et prématurée de la White Magic : En cassant le maillon lui infliga ce qu’on appelle communément dans le jargon scientifique : de vilains impacts. C’est Julien qui nous sauva encore une fois la mise en nous prêtant une sangle. Un poil trop élastique, mais le temps n’était pas aux jérémiades.

L’installation se fit le lendemain non sans quelques  manifestations de notre inséparable branche. L’élasticité de la slack nous fit retendre la highline trois fois avant de pouvoir enfin imagier poser un pied dessus. Comme Hugo ne donnait pas l’impression de vouloir se lancer, je fut le premier à enrouler le huit autour de mon baudrier pour tester la line. Quelques pas et je lui offrais son premier leash-fall (entendez une bonne grosse chute des familles). Comme prévu, la highline était bien plus souple qu’elle n’aurait du l’être et après plusieurs minutes de combats intenses, j’ai passé le flambeau à Huho qui arriva non sans peine à la moitié de la slack. Ce fut ensuite le tour de Julien qui lui aussi s’infligea de nombreux leash-fall avant d’arriver à la moitié. Le jeu était lancé et la branche semblait s’être calmée. Julien fini par la passer, juste avant que le satané bout de bois ne frappe à nouveau. Hugo eu à peine le temps d’ouvrir la bouche que  je sentis quelque chose s’échapper de la poche arrière de mon pantalon alors que prenais ma dernière chute. “Dude, your keyyyyyys” et je les voyais tomber dans la pénombre des arbres quelques centaines de mètres plus bas. Un joli trousseau pour dire vrai, clés de voiture, de maison, cave, portes d’entrées, avec un chouette leash vert fluo. Ouch, la vilaine branche!

Julien, accompagné par toute la bonne volonté du monde, descendit la falaise en rappel pour y chercher vainement ce qui devait être perdu pour de bon. Depuis le bord, quelques cent mètres plus haut, Hugo et moi observions la tache de lumière perdu dans la nuit en essayant de le guider du mieux possible. Enfermés dehors. Nous y étions presque. Mais je ne sais pas par quelle heureuse coïncidence, j’avais laissé les fenêtres de la voiture entre-ouvertes. La bonne vielle technique de la tige métallique fonctionna à merveille nous offrant accès à quelques ustensiles des plus utiles pour passer une nuit agréable comme un duvet, ou une mousse de sol pour faire simple.

C’est donc à pied que Hugo et moi avons descendu la route des crêtes en direction du premier belvédère  surplombant les gorges dans le soleil levant. Les yeux encore un peu vitreux et la démarche chaloupée, nous marchions vers un des nombreux départs de base jump. Le saut de la veille avait été un peu court et le singe volant qui m’accompagnait était bien décider à en trouver un qui donnait directement sur le fond des gorges. Comme le hasard fait bien les choses et que la branche maudite ne semblait pas être d’humeur matinale, notre route croisa celle d’un petit groupe de base jumpeurs français qui en étaient déjà à leur troisième saut de la journée. Une belle occasion de connaître un peu mieux les bons coins. C’était parti pour un petit déjeuner sous forme de 300m d’à-pic. Le saut fut tellement long que la séquence de mon D300 satura avant même qu’il fasse mine d’ouvrir son parachute. Le nez dans le vide, je le regardait atterrir en me demandant pourquoi je ne m’était pas encore mis à la chute…

Le dernier jour dans les gorges arrivait tranquillement comme nous contions les scorpions cachés sous nos matelas. Un jeu plutôt marrant que j’ai gagné avec trois d’entre-eux d’un coup. La journée passa aussi tranquillement qu’elle était arrivée, entre base jump et highline – des activités relaxantes et décompressantes au possible comme vous le constatez. Le service “SOS-Clé-pour-les-victimes-de-branches-vicieuses” arriva dans l’après-midi. Reno et Sophie, arrivés de Marseille avec le double des clés de la voiture, ne parurent pas aussi émerveillés que nous l’étions lors de notre démonstration d’ouverture de portière à l’ancienne. Numéro pourtant bien rodé. Le bruit du moteur vrombissant annonçait notre départ imminent et nous avons dû dire au revoir au si chaleureux parking qui nous avait accueilli durant les trois derniers jours. La suite du voyage allait nous conduire à Marseille pour une water line et un petit saut de base sur les falaises de Cassis. Mais pas trop vite quand même. Avant tout, il nous fallait se perdre un peu dans la campagne varoise et manquer de 10 minutes la fermeture du Mc Donald’s de Barjols. On le savait, la branche ne nous quitterai pas si facilement.

Tout était calculé. Le timing, la disposition du soleil, le temps. Nous avions même repéré et testé le spot idéal pour notre shooting de water line. La journée de dimanche aurait dû se dérouler comme ceci : 7h30 base jump à Cassis, 9h30 – 10h arrivée aux Calanques de Sugiton pour la water line, 10h à 12h shooting intense, 13h retour à Marseille pour éviter la marée de touristes affluant dans les calanques comme dans tous les endroits pourvus d’eau fraîche. Mais vous avez bien lu “aurait dû”, car la branche ne pouvant nous laisser achever le trip sur un air de victoire, frappa aussi massivement que profondément à 8h02 précisément. L’instant même où Hugo toucha le sol lors d’un atterrissage trop violent pour être innocent. Instantanément avalé par les buissons, je ne voyais plus que sa voile. Mon souffle repris lorsqu’il lâcha le bon gros OOOOOooouuuUUUUuGGGGhhhhHHH qui annonçait qu’il était entier. La surprise arriva un peu plus tard quand on le vit descendre une ruelle du village en clopinant. Rien de cassé, mais suffisamment douloureux pour  écourter notre programme qui sonnait si bien. Ce coup-ci, la branche avait porté son coup de grâce et nous avions fini de jouer. Il ne restait plus à Hugo qu’à trouver un moyen de rentrer à Barcelone et de rentrer en Alsace avec Sophie pour ma part. Sans remords. La semaine aura été mémorable.

Malgré tout, on peut constater que ce trip entre l’Alsace, le Verdon et Marseille a prit des airs de réelle aventure avec toutes les galères qui n’ont fait que rendre les bons moments encore plus appréciables. Un peu comme toujours en fait. C’est pour ça qu’on y retourne, après tout. “Dude? Do feel the branch anymore? I think I will miss it”

Batu Caves, Selangor, Malaysia.

This is the first ever event has been held in Malaysia, jump for accuracy. About 15 participant local and international participate in this competition. All participant jump from the cliff of Damai Caves or Gua Damai, Batu Caves about 300 meter or 980 feet from the ground. The wind change direction almost of the time and heavy wind in the evening make the event more challenging. Nik Khairul Fahmi became as the first winner for this event.

At the same time, there is Climbing Festival also being held at same place and attract fans and climber from various age. From novice to pros.

This event has been sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, Menara Kuala Lumpur, Outdoor Center and Mad Monkeyz Climbing Gym.

Dad’s running my wing.  He kept a nice gust from pulling it up right when we started thank goodness. 

Dustina Martin did a 100km triangle at 49km/min today breaking the previous 44km/min speed record.  I tried too but got low after the second turnpoint and then the wind just worked me over bad so I was happy just to get back up.  I flew for 3.5 hours playing with the clouds and driving over to Mexico on Air-BJ.  Then around Zapata and back to the airport.  Ended up being 55 miles of exploration.  The clouds came back today around 1pm and we’re all excited for tomorrow.

Also, Zippy took Laura up for a tandem and it sounds like they had a blast up at cloudbase. 

2 days ago was a 10 hour, 302 mile flight that I’m dang proud of.  3 clouds for the entire flight.  One I got past the hill country and up to the higher plateau, I got a climb to 11.3k, but it was just too slow.  My tailwind was showing 17ish when I was low and a couple times showed just 5mph when I was high.  For 3 days, the wind has been all backwards…  22mph on the ground, but 5-8 up at 10k.  Weird.  Tomorrow and the next week show promise of making real wind all the way up to cloudbase which will help a BUNCH.  And we might also have clouds!  GAME ON.

I know I already posted this video. I might post it again in a few months. This is seriously one of the craziest things I can imagine myself doing. I wouldn’t be doing those 5-10ft flybys, but I would definitely get my flying squirrel on.

Similar to the Chinese Sink Hole, the base jumpers have taken over but this time their assistants have donned parachutes to give them a little more height and put them over even better terrain. It’s then time to lower themselves down and detach from the chutes.

With a mixture of base jumping and wingsuits they would need to make the height perfect before they could jump. As they compare the views over beautiful terrain with a closer look of the ground every second they fall this would be an amazing adrenaline rush! What will they think of next to base jump off?

After watching Nitro Circus on MTV and googling a couple of the base jumpers names, I found this gem of a video. This group of real nutters search high and low, through different continents and via different modes of transport to find the perfect and most extreme areas to feed their adrenaline addiction. In this video they have chosen China as their focus for extreme stunts. Almost completely running on redbull, they storm the Great Wall looking for good heights to Base Jump off before leaving and finding a perfect bridge to just jump off.

But Finally they find their oasis in the form of a sink-hole, with a perfectly formed cave which could be used as a landing strip. Once they have checked the gap of the hole and the depth of the hole, all that is left to do is don their parachute, put up a zipwire from one side to another and make their way out to the middle. I will let you observe the rest but this sink hole looked so perfect to them they added the bungee jump followed by base jump for the extra crack!
