Ducked in to Basement today (literally ducked, the door is really small) for a short lunch and long mach. Both were pleasing! The long mach was almost a three quarter latte (the way long mach’s used to be!). The place is a little grungy/trendy and really well priced. Breaky all day, all manner of lunchy things. If you’re nearby don’t hesitate to pop in and spend some time in this semi- subterranean space. Good tunes too.

Today’s homeowners want energy-efficient appliances. What better way to do that than with

Today’s homeowners want energy-efficient appliances. What better way to do that than with a tankless water heater. You can get an endless supply of hot water while saving money and our precious natural resources. My basement remodeling company has been installing more and more of these systems. Why not, they take up less space, they are more efficient and they last twice as long.

Tankless water heaters are small wall mounted units that heat water only when needed by using an electric coil or natural gas to heat water passing through a network of copper pipes inside. This eliminates the risk of a tank failure and the energy lost by constantly reheating water. Two of the most popular tankless water heaters are the Bosch AquaStar 2700ES NG (natural gas) and Bosch AquaStar 2700ES LP (propane) . Typically the gas-fired tankless water heaters will produce higher flow rates than an electric tankless which is why I use and recommend the Bosch ones you see above. Some of the smaller tankless systems you might find cheaper online or at Home Depot cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous usage in a large household so be careful when making a selection. The Aquastar 2700ES delivers 7 gallons per minute( enough to run several fixtures at once), electronic ignition( no standing pilot light), direct vent combustion, remote thermostat, and a 12year warranty on the heat exchanger with a 2year warranty on parts

For your installation make sure you check local building code requirements and/or have a qualified plumbing , heating, or general contractor help you with your installation. Whether you choose gas or electric they should be able to help you make sure the gas venting requirements or the electrical wiring requirements are met. Remember the proper installation/maintenance of your system can optimize the energy efficiency and help it last for decades.

Guidelines for the Tax Credit can be viewed on the ENERGY STAR website.

The average life expectancy of a tankless system can be over 20 year where a standard tank might last 10-15 years. A tankless system can have an energy savings of up to 50% and most are energy star rated. To make things even better this item qualifies for a Federal Tax Incentive equal to 30% of the purchase and installation cost up to $1500. Theses home improvement tax credits are available for energy-saving home improvements that are placed in service in your primary residense from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.

I’m a fan of liquor stores, but I’d be a bigger fan of them if they opened and closed more frequently in the same spots. You can’t beat six bottles of an assortment of wine, shot stuff and extra dry vermouth for 28$. That’s the America I want to live in. In moderation of course though.

As I posted last week, I was supposed to start writing the script again, but haven’t started up again. There is a ton more to think about this time. Factoring in the budget, locations to film, people I know or don’t know; it’s all weighing down on how I write the next part of the movie. It’s very apparent this is a lot easier in tinsel town since they have A: Money, and B: resources.

I have a few goals with this movie, and I’ll tell you one of them: I fully expect this movie to be better than every Colin Farrell movie ever made, COMBINED. Now, I understand your thinking, “But Erik, no one has ever attempted to out act, produce and direct anything Colin Farrell has ever done, how will you do it?”

Once you see the movie, you will know.

I was unable to start writing again this week, this explains where I’m at and what I need to do:

It’s from an interview with Dave Soloway, formerly a guitarist for Saves the Day.

Let me give you the advice that changed everything for us. It was the moment when, I don’t remember exactly who suggested it. I think Chris was reading, actually Chris was reading a book, I don’t know if it was a writer, well obviously it’s a writer that wrote the book. But it was some book about the writing process, I think it must have been a novelist or maybe a poet, I can’t remember if it was a he or she. But he or she said something to the effect of when you’re feeling like you don’t have anything good to write, the worst thing you can do is try to wait for something to come. You’ve got to be willing to write crap. You’ve got to be willing to write it and look at it and go “You know, that’s crap, but at least I wrote something.”

Yeah, I’m at crap level right now… or back to it I suppose.

That was a long title. Today, instead of going to singing rehearsals (which I think now that I think

That was a long title.

Today, instead of going to singing rehearsals (which I think now that I think about it, I was actually aware of last week, then forgot about until last night) I went out with Katherine again. We went to the city to “research” webcams, speakers etc. Also, I had to run errands.

Got to the Glen uber early because I couldn’t be bothered catching a bus so got mom to drop me off as she went to work, meaning I waited around at Maccas using their free wifi for about an hour. Got the 10:11 train, and Katherine got on at Mt Waverley. This doesn’t sound exciting. It isn’t.

Got to Melbourne Central and needed to pee. Then got Caramellatte. Still isn’t that exciting.

(What WAS funny, however, as right before I went into the bathroom I told Katherine to “stay here” and the look she gave me could only be described as “oh-no-you-didn’t-just-treat-me-like-your-dog”.)

So first of all we went to Myer to look at speakers. It took ages to find the entertainment section because we had to go down down down down.

Katherine also looked at cameras because she wants a DSLR. Anyone gonna help her out? Didn’t think so.

By the way, and this has been bugging me all day; to my friends: do any of you use Versace New Woman? Because Katherine was wearing it, and I SWEAR I know someone else who wears it but I cannot for my LIFE remember who. It would, I assume, be someone who I get close enough to smell. Just ignore how ducking perverted I sound right now.

I think that’s the bottle. Google does tend to duck with me sometimes.

Then we left Melbourne Central and went to Bourke St to head for JB. We went into Target first, and got lost. I told her to “ask the Asian chick!” but she refused to. “We can find it ourselves!” “You’re such a guy!” “What?!” “Guys never ask for directions.” “FINE I’ll ask the Asian chick!”

Then we got out of Target and went into JB. This is gripping stuff this is.

We saw the speakers that she wanted. Z4 or something? She gasped. Then saw the pricetag. She gasped again.

Well, at this point (and I just consulted Katherine who also has “NO idea”) I forgot the chain of events, so I’ll just throw in stuff that happened and hopefully the universe doesn’t collapse into itself in a mess of chronological mess.

Mess of…chronological…mess. I need to sleep.

At some point we traversed Russel St. We walked around in the shade (thank you vampirism). We walked a hell of a lot. We went to the Dirt Cheap Books store. Haha. Ha. I made Katherine look at a book about sex or something naughty starting with S. I found it funny. She found it fit to simply walk away from me. I tried calling her name but to no avail. I contemplated using the tried-and-true “MARCO POLO” tactic but felt it not emergency enough.

At some other point I took Katherine to the “secret shop” that Eunice once showed me except she’s been there before with another Alex. We looked at PostSecret books and random books. She found this book called “Wreck This Journal”. At the back of the book, it says “tape this book together, and mail it to yourself!” I think I might actually mail it to her.

At some other point we traversed Elizabeth St. That was painful on my feet too. We walked into a lot of electronic stores. Most of the time I just whinged about how Katherine doesn’t watch FRIENDS, and never has.

(I started marathon-ing Season 2 of FRIENDS again last night. I gotta say that summer when I marathon-ed it all was such a wonderful summer. Michelle, can I borrow all of them again?)

At some yet other point we ate lunch. Had an interesting conversation at lunch. It was interesting because I made Katherine talk and eat. You know she doesn’t do either in public right? Apparently she doesn’t sing in public either. I mean. Who doesn’t or hasn’t once sung in public?

At some yet other other point I ran my errand. We went to National Geographic and I got Eunice her Sea Monkeys.

At some fail point I started going up in the down escalators because my brain said, “No one is going to that one, it’s empty!”

Finally, we were bushed. We were so bushed we decided to find a place to sit down except the downstairs foodcourt at Melb Central was too hot and one of the good couches upstairs was taking by a really PDA couple (there was a lot of space next to them – they were REALLY PDA – but yeah we thought it would be WAY awkward to go sit with them).

So we went down to the Basement and found a couch to crash on. Listened to Katherine’s iPod. Then this group of guys came down and sat on the couch next to us and it was majorly awkward turtle ‘cos we just basically sat still and pretended we weren’t there. Then they left. So we had the gummy people I bought her, and I made her drop one in my mouth except she missed (I swear, oh my god, my mouth was 10 cms from her hand. She missed).

At some point after that we took the train home together after I made her take Glenny with me (the guilty puppy face actually works on her. Wow.) and we tried to solve the Sudoku except I ducked it up. Then we were doing the crossword, and 16-across was “Ass-like”. I wrote “Katherine” next to it.

I guess I can’t be bothered explaining the huge in-joke behind that except just simple to direct you towards “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas.

There was a clue that was “seize”. So far we had _rap___ and at the same time both of us wondered out loud, “Crapture?”

After she left I was sending her a text and I tried to write the f word except it came out as “duck”. I think that’s how I’m going to swear as from now on.

Well, I was aiming for 1000 words and I hit it.

Alex.

P.S. Apparently singing rehearsals sucked. Yay. (Annie…Annie…ah duck it)

P.P.S. 14 days ’til Sorrento!

Also, the old ugly wet bar has been ripped out and the new smaller sink shall be finished off within the week. My basement is almost ready and I’m so happy with how well it’s turning

Any homeowner should know that water damage can be one of the most dreaded things they can find. Sometimes it can be just a small amount of water that causes a small amount of damage. Then there are some things that can quickly cause a lot of water to be let out at once and this can cause a lot of damage. The thing is that many times water problems in a home can be avoided all together when the home is inspected on a regular schedule by the home owner or someone qualified they might hire to do it for them once a year. It is easy for a homeowner to save money and do these inspections themselves if they know what to look for. The following list are places you should never miss:

1. Underneath cabinets is a great place to start inside . Kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room cabinets can have sink plumbing in them that can leak. Check for leaking faucets as well.

2. Appliances that use water will be your refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, and hot water heater. Even a freezer can leak water. Check underneath them to look for any leaking from the appliance and always check the water connections.

3. Check around tubs, showers, and toilets for leaks and missing caulking that can allow water to get in. Look at baseboards and flooring to see if water has damaged the wood.

4. Windows and doors that lead to outside can develop leaks where rainwater can get in. These gaps or cracks around the installation area also cause outside air to get in and inside heating and cooling to go out.

5. Check exhaust fans and vents anywhere you might have them installed in your home. They need to be anywhere that moisture might accumulate like the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

6. Attics and basements leaks can often be found on the inside where water is coming in from the outside. These areas might also need ventilation to prevent moisture build up. If they feel damp or humid, installing a dehumidifier might be a good idea.

7. If you have ant indoor fountain or water feature inside the home, they need to be checked for leaks as well.

8. Outside the home, you must have the roof inspected especially if you found leaking in the attic. Check for loose or missing shingles. Look closely where gutters are connected to the home and make sure they are clear of any debris and rust free.

9. Check outside water spigots connected to the home or not.

10. If you have a crawlspace instead of a basement, it is necessary to go under there and look for pipe leaks or any water that is coming in from outside. Standing water in the crawlspace can cause structural damage.

11. Landscaping is important because water must run away from the home foundation and not settle around it. This will cause basement leaking, leaking into the crawlspace and foundational damage.

12. Look at air conditioners and central heating and cooling units because they can leak water.

Last of all, every home is different and may have other places where water can be a problem. You might have a sprinkler system in your home or yard. These need to be checked if you have them. You might have an indoor or outdoor swimming pool, spa, or hot tub. These can leak as well. Personal you list to include anywhere or anything that is associated with water and make sure it is on your list whether you inspect on your own or have someone to do it for you. Always, always look for any signs of mold if you find anywhere water has been where it should not have been Mold can cause as much damage to your home as the water itself if it is left to grow and spread.

Just kidding. It’s because you’re short and you always smell like garlic.

I’m going to start writing on Saturday again. I literally just decided that at 12:22 am on friday November 13. I’ll even proofread this time. And lets just say this summer is when Grizzly Skag Bear is going to be filmed. We have about 4.5 more months of crappy weather to deal with which will amount to a lot of productive writing time. A lot needs to be changed to fit the movies budget, and if you have read the last handful of entries you would know that the budget will be tight.

Right now, I’m doing as much as I can to not start writing again, but I do this with everything: school papers, groceries, moving my car, etc.. It has all worked out so far. My productive parts of the day are early in the morning (if I’m awake) and late at night (after midnight). It’s a curse and a gift that i blame on my sleep schedule that I’ve yet to acquire during a reasonable time of night.

Some creative person probably said this :”You can’t force creativity.” I believe whoever that is, is right.

ps: the first 16 words of this entry aren’t about anyone if you were wondering.

Tonight our nephew Chris’s family came over for tacos. Chris & Salina’s daughter Bella (yes, I know this means that Dave and I are a Great Uncle and a Great Aunt) is just four months younger than Emma, so it’s always a good time getting them all together. What cracks me up the most, though, is that both Ben and Ems treat Bella like she’s this little baby. Tonight was no exception. Both of them hovered around her and followed her every move. And when Salina had to change Bella’s diaper, she had a two-person gallery who thought this event was the most interesting thing in the world.

We had a taco night, and although all of the grown-ups loved it, none of the kids were too thrilled with our menu. Seriously…what kids don’t like tacos? That’s my picky eaters for you. Thankfully, the kids had enough fun playing with an entertaining Bella to get over their disappointment with dinner.

There is a quote from H. L. Mencken that reads, “Every normal man must be tempted at times to

There is a quote from H. L. Mencken that reads, “Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.” Since first reading it, I’ve been struck by those words and have remembered them. Every normal man must sometimes want to throw caution to the wind and be a pirate, it says, to slit throats with abandon and claim the spoils regardless of consequence. It is tempting. But I also read a deeper meaning in it. A rallying cry, a warning, a call-to-arms. There comes a time, these words say, when every man will have to take action, make a stand, and risk everything to fight for what they value or else lose it to another’s plundering.

I’ve never read that line in its original context. Those sentiments may not be remotely near what the author intended when writing it. But a learned man once told me that what we see on our own is more important than what we are told to see. You can be taught to see more, to see better, he said, but never fully trust what you are told. So Mr. Mencken will have to pardon my conclusions; they are mine alone.

Hoist the black flag, he said. Slit throats. To war, then, and to the victor goes the spoils. It strikes me that much of American society is already busy at pirating, or was until the Big Bust of 2008. Wanting a large payoff from a smaller, somewhat riskier investment seemed to be the prevailing modus operandi. Flip houses. Flip cars. Flip companies. Trust Bernie with your money. Cheat (but slyly) on your taxes. In fact, cheat at anything if you think you won’t get caught. Score as much credit as possible. Buy things you can’t afford with someone else’s money. Lie and steal from your government, your employer, your family, your fellow man. Anything for the almighty dollar.

If you were in construction, you threw together as many buildings as possible and waited for fat profits to roll in, and who cares about the structural integrity of those houses and business spaces. So what if the floor joists won’t last five years, and the basement leaks if so much as a dog takes a whizz two doors down, and the wallboard emits poisonous gas? Sorry, buddy, you were dumb enough to sail into my harbor and your throat just got slit. Thanks for the booty. Besides, that’s what homeowner’s insurance is for.

If you were in insurance you issued thousands of policies that were useless and refused to pay claims, slitting more throats and raking in treasure chests of booty. Your house burnt? Oh, so sorry, we won’t pay for anything damaged by smoke or water or heat or any wall left standing. Tell you what, we’ll give you this month’s mortgage payment plus an extra $50. We’re feeling very generous today. A hurricane you say? Your house flooded? Oh how awful. But no, sorry, we don’t pay off on damages from storm surge. Nope, it’s not a flood, it’s a wave, and we don’t cover that. Sorry. Don’t forget, your next payment is due in two weeks. Bye bye now.

And of course there were still the usual rackets of car sales, internet companies, Wall Street, and, well, anything run by the government. Anything to make another dollar, and the less honest the better. Hey, that’s the new American Dream: getting something for nothing. From the world’s largest corporation to grade schoolers, everyone’s playing pirate.

But someone somewhere is losing. Someone is watching their house or car or savings or future circle the drain when that newest chest is drug on board the winning ship and its golden contents are revealed. With a pirate on every side wondering how they can get their hands on it next.

So what does this have to do with Mencken’s quote? I think the deeper meaning behind it says you have to be your own pirate, be prepared to fight for anything you want, and if you really want it you can’t let others stand in your way. If keeping your job means someone else goes unemployed, so be it. If keeping your house means another family goes homeless, that’s something you’ll just have to face. It is, in a way, Darwin’s evolution in action. No one ever wrote a treatise on the survival of the nicest.

The sad fact of life on this planet is that not everyone will have what they want, and many will not have what they need. And to have anything at all, you will have to fight for it. We do not live in a global utopian society, and if you do not take it you will likely die waiting for it to be given to you.

That goes for liberty as much as for anything else. If you do not fight for your freedoms, you can hardly expect anyone to grace you with them out of the goodness of their heart. Governments, for instance, were not constructed out of goodness but out of fear and desire … even our own illustrious “city on a hill.” It’s nice to stand safely on the sidelines and speak of pacifism and conscientious objections, but in reality they don’t work. At some point, the theory breaks down. Even one man sitting alone in the middle of a garden will have to fight if he wants to eat, fight weeds and animals and drought and frost. Idealism has yet to feed a hungry belly.

I think Mencken’s words reveal that life is simply one fight after another, and if you want to do more than simply survive, you’ll have to do so at someone else’s expense. Is your life more important than someone else’s? Is someone else’s life more important than yours? How can anyone possibly know? So hoist your flag, brandish your sword and pistol, and let the blood run.

What is Radon? Radon is a radioactive gas released from the normal decay of uranium in rocks and soi

What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas released from the normal decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It is an invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that seeps up through the ground and diffuses into the air.

Radon can enter homes through cracks in floors, walls, or foundations, and collect indoors. It can also be released from building materials, or from water obtained from wells that contain radon.

Radon levels can be higher in homes that are well insulated, tightly sealed, and/or built on uranium-rich soil. Because of their closeness to the ground, basement and first floors typically have the highest radon levels.

Can Radon Damage My Health?

Radon decays quickly, giving off tiny radioactive particles. When inhaled, these radioactive particles can damage the cells that line the lung. Long-term exposure to radon can lead to lung cancer, the only cancer proven to be associated with inhaling radon.

Scientists estimate that approximately 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths per year are related to radon.

How do I know If I Have Radon In My Home?

Testing is the only way to know if a person’s home has elevated radon levels. Indoor radon levels are affected by the soil composition under and around the house, and the ease with which radon enters the house. Homes that are next door to each other can have different indoor radon levels, making a neighbor’s test result a poor predictor of radon risk. Radon levels can vary month to month and day to day, therefore, long-term and short-term radon tests are recommended.

A state or local radon official can explain the differences between testing devices and recommend the most appropriate test for a person’s needs and conditions.

The cost of a radon reduction depends on the size and design of a home and the radon reduction methods that are needed. These costs typically range from $800 to $2,500, with an average cost of $1,200.

When creating usable living space, the basement often becomes the most inexpensive approach to converting comfortable living space. Today, more and more old damp musty basements are being converted into dry usable space.

After installing a baseboard-style basement waterproofing system, finishing your basement is the next and final step.

Never drive nails into the floor. Horizontal base plates of 2″x2″ should be attached to the wall just above the SquidGee Dry™ System. Use masonry nails. Vertical 2″x2″ should be attached to the wall in the same manner. Run all 2″x2″s from the top of the wall down to meet the horizontal base plate.

Next, install insulation. Bead board insulation is an ideal product for basement walls.

Now, its time to sheet rock from the top of the wall down to the lower edge of the horizontal base plate. There should be a clear space under the new walls preventing water damage to the sheet rock.

So far very little has been written about earthbag basements. Earthbags are suitable for basements and other underground applications such as cisterns and rootcellars. Round or curved designs are inherently stronger than long, straight walls, which require reinforcing columns or buttresses.

Earthbag Basement Wall Detail

General guidelines for earthbag basements:
- 24″ wide poly bags (measured when empty)
- lime stabilized soil tamped solid
- 10%-20% type-S lime hydrate to dry soil by volume
- mix lime and soil thoroughly before adding water
- two strands 4-point barbed wire
- rubble trench with French drain
- taper walls slightly outward
- double layer 6 mil polyethylene moisture barrier
- use scoria, pumice, etc. for improved insulation

Build on high ground, and grade the site away from the building. Dry climates are obviously more suitable than wet climates. Use caution — working below grade is dangerous. Temporary shoring may be required. Avoid problem clay soils. The final design should be based on soil tests and calculations by a licensed engineer.

It was a crazy night, good times. It can pretty much be summed up by Huss drinking a bottle of pink wine, being unable to play, then being ill and passing out. Fun!

It is an unfortunate fact that the vast majority of owners who choose to call a professional basemen

It is an unfortunate fact that the vast majority of owners who choose to call a professional basement waterproofing company only do so after a costly disaster like flooding occurs on their property. Ironically, the ideal time to water resistant your basement isn’t during the wet season when damages are evident, but during the dry summer months when it’s simpler and less expensive to work on your home’s foundation drainage system.

Dry basement waterproofing may appear like an oxymoron, but a dry basement that’s showing evidence of a defective exterior drainage system will not remain dry for long. Indicators like tiny cracks in the walls, mold or mould growth, and even tiny wet patches can indicate big Problems in the future.

When your basement floods, the opening cleanup costs, and property replacement, are both high and unnecessary. Even if insurance pays for cleanup costs, looking after flood damage is taxing both mentally and physically.

Excavating your house’s foundation is way easier to do during the dry summer months, and most dry or wet basement waterproofing projects need some amount of outside digging. Footer drains, which are the primary part of a working drainage system, are also better to repair, replace and install in dry weather.

Of course, it’s never easy spending serious amounts of money on preventative renovation, especially when it is not certain that it will save you funds in the future. But even if your dry basement waterproofing project doesn’t forestall a major flood, it’ll certainly add to your house’s equity and a make your property a more marketable asset in the future.
