Having used Gnome and Evolution for a number of years I’m occasionally still wondering about the existence of minor glitches that would baffle any user. One of these issues is the starting of new processes for applications already running. In some cases, like for the Web browser, such behaviour can be what the user expects and so it’s fine. But that’s not always the case, a prime example being Evolution (or any email client for that matter). Especially if you use Evolution to connect to an MS Exchange server you probably know what pain it is. So, it would be useful if Gnome didn’t start a new Evolution process whenever you accidentally press the link on the taskbar.

So, here’s my simple, uninteresting but effective solution (which you can use for any X-based application you like). Running any X-based application through this script will cause Gnome to focus on this application instead of launching a new one, if an instance of it is already running.

1. Get wmctrl. If you use Ubuntu or another debian-based distribution a

   sudo apt-get install wmctrl

   would probably suffice.

2. Create a new script using your favourite text editor somewhere in your home directory, say in ~/bin

   mkdir -p ~/bin
   gedit ~/bin/wrap_app.sh

3. And copy the following:

   Save and close gedit and make the script executable:

   chmod +x ~/bin/wrap_app.sh

4. You can run any Gnome application through the script. For instance, you can alter the Evolution launcher by right-clicking on its icon, selecting “Properties” and changing the “Command” field so that it contains

   /home/USERNAME/bin/wrap_app.sh evolution

   instead of just “evolution”, replacing “USERNAME” with your username (Launchers require the full path to the script and not shortcuts like ~/ or $HOME/).

That’s it. As long as you run Evolution from the launcher you altered, you should always have a single instance of it running at any given time.

The simple solution with awk is doing:

awk ‘{print $NF}’

This is useful when like in the following  we want to list just files skipping directories:

ls -l | awk ‘NR!=1 && !/^d/ {print $NF}

Der Hund ist ganz schön clever!

Ποσες φορες, δεν σας εχει τυχει να γραφετε μια εντολη στο τερματικο να πατατε το enter και να σας βγαζει μυνημα οτι πρεπει να εχετε δικαιωματα root για να εκτελεστει η εντολη… δεν ειναι σπαστικο να ξαναγραφετε την εντολη η εστω με τα βελακια να κανετε back… στην αρχη της εντολης κτλ…κτλ…

Μπορειτε πολυ ευκολα να γραψετε κατευθειαν sudo και μετα διπλα θαυμαστικα, οπως φενεται παρακατω:

sudo !!

Βασικα το ολο κολπο ειναι τα διπλα θαυμαστικα, τα οποια ειναι εντολη του bash και αυτο που κανουν ειναι να “γραφουν” την τελευταια εντολη που πληκτρολογησατε, οποτε μπορειτε να τα χρησιμοποιειτε και με αλλες εντολες και οχι μονο με την sudo.

Si je mérite ce titre, c’est que j’ai reçu des invitations pour des ventes privées de rêves cette semaine, seulement je suis fauchée (et c’est rien de l’écrire…) et je ne vais sûrement pas aller tenter le diable (qui s’habille pas qu’en Prada, mais aussi en Maje, Sandro, Zadig&Voltaire, Les petites et en Ba&sh apparemment…).

(mais virtuel le plateau, bah oui je vous l’ai dit: je suis raide)

Siempre que necesito hacer el mismo cambio en múltiples ficheros nunca termino de acordarme y tengo que recurrir a leer el manual de sed o recurrir a tito google. En este caso en concreto era corregir un fallo en los ficheros pom.xml de módulos Maven2, más concretamente cambiar la versión de todos ellos:

find . -name pom.xml -exec sed -e 's/0\.4-SNAPSHOT/0\.4/' -i {} \;

Ci sono operazioni che per fortuna o purtroppo non facciamo spesso, editare il file di configurazione del server X ad esempio e’ una di quelle operazioni che, a meno di modifiche hardware, una volta fatte non dobbiamo piu’ ripetere. Puo’ succede quindi che ci dimentichiamo il percorso di questi file, allora o li cerchiamo o chiediamo a Google dove possiamo trovarli. Ma c’e’ un altro sistema, che semplifica le cose, vediamolo.

Si tratta di farci uno script in Bash col quale selezionare quale file vogliamo editare, in questo modo non siamo costretti a ricordarci il percorso di ogni singolo file importante. In questo script sono presenti cinque file molto importanti, con i quali prima o poi tutti (o quasi) abbiamo a che fare, il menu’ di GRUB, la lista delle sorgenti, la tabella dei dispositivi montati, le opzioni dell’interfaccia di rete (che io uso con soddisfazione al posto di NetworkManager) e il file di configurazione del server X.

Ovviamente potete aggiungere i file che volete nell’elenco. Ecco lo script:

copiatelo e incollatelo in un file vuoto, rinominatelo come volete (ad esempio editpersmemorati) e mettetelo nella directory /bin:

A questo punto quando dovete editare uno di quei file vi bastera’ dare questo comando:
# editpersmemorati
selezionare il file che vi interessa e procedere normalmente alla sua modifica.

Essendo comandi da eseguire da root, anche lo script deve essere ovviamente eseguito da root.

Dans mon post listif-présentatif, j’expliquais que j’étais capable de faire la queue des heures pour des ventes privées, même sous la pluie. C’est vrai.
Pour ceux, ou plutôt celles, qui ne le savent pas encore, les ventes privées, ce sont nos marques préférées à prix bradés dans des espaces dédiés et ce, deux fois par an. Ce sont des soldes qui ont la classe quoi.
Certains diront : “Les ventes privées, ce sont plutôt des centaines de fashion victims parisiennes qui font la queue pendant des heures en étant persuadées qu’elles ont un super bon plan alors qu’en fait elles payent des fringues méga chères à la base juste un peu moins cher.”

Mais n’écoutons pas ces médisants. Certes, certaines marques abusent un peu en proposant à des prix encore élevés des trucs moches qu’on n’a même jamais vu en boutique, mais il y a de vraies bonnes affaires à faire. Du coup, ces ventes n’ont souvent plus de privé que le nom. Les fameux sésames pour y accéder se trouvent partout. Le réseau, entre filles, est une valeur sûre quand il s’agit de shopping. Résultat, ce qui était un vrai bon plan il y a quelques années est devenu une lutte acharnée précédée d’une attente plus ou moins longue. Il est donc nécessaire de choisir le plus judicieusement possible les ventes et les horaires. Tout un programme à échafauder.

I maintain a drupal codebase that hosts multiple sites. I’ve been shamefully lax in getting regular backups of those files and databases, until today. Here is a pretty basic bash script that will create a bzip2 archive of the drupal codebase (including site-specific dirs), and then create mysqldump exports of each site’s database and gzip those files. This particular script requires that the drupal install directory be named “drupal”, but you can change this easily enough to suit your needs.

This does require a ~/.drupalsites file that contains the needed database login info (suggest chmod 600). Like I said, nothing too clever.

This script runs fine from cron, I have it scheduled for a weekly run. I then plan to rsync this to my home server for an offsite copy, even though the hosting service provides backups as well.

For those who don’t know this, you can use you UP arrow on your keyboard to cycle through previous commands you’ve entered in the terminal. Your “bash history” records them, and you’ll be presented with them in the order of last used first. If you go too far, use your DOWN arrow to find the command you passed. Similarly, if you decide to type in a new command, just use the DOWN arrow to get past the previous entries and back to an empty prompt.
