Renowned Bristol vinyl collector, label owner and producer Peverelist has launched a new record label called Unearthed to release remastered tunes from the Bristol sound-system scene of the early 90s. The first release comes from foundational Bristol headz Smith & Mighty with the rerelease of U Dub and Bass is Maternal.

While it’s interesting to see the early interplay between the digi-dub sound pallette and hardcore breaks the tunes themselves are a bit of a let down; U Dub has quite a nice rolling vibe to it but the release still serves as more of a history lesson than a vital opportunity to get hold of a tune I’ve been gagging to play out.

Speaking of the early connection between dub and techno and sound system re-releases this seems like an opportune time to ask what’s happened to Basic Replay? Run by Ernestus and Moritz from Basic Channel the label was always scarily on point with its selection and beautiful remastering of early digi-dancehall releases from established names such as Gregory Isaacs and lesser known artists such as White Mice and Tenastelin. It hasnt had a release now since 2006 but I still hope (in vain?) that there are more to come.

Here’s a couple of favourites from the label’s back catalogue – most of which can still be grabbed on vinyl or CD here.

Have you ever felt the urge of being catapulted into orbit with a fire cracker shoved up your rear ?

Now’s your chance!

Electronic pioneers – Fuck Buttons - have for long experimented with breaking boundaries of electronic possibilities. Some good, some bad, some unlistenable and some like beamed from another planet to wreak havoc on us mortals.

Admittedly I found their last album – “Tarot Sport” – hard going. To sit through the entire thing will definitely challenge you. Nevertheless – it does contain this giant juggernaut of celestial celebration – or is it a homage to Disney World ? – which is exactly the equivalent of said above.

“Space Mountain” touches on the same soundscapes as Detroit legend – Jeff Mills – has been experimenting with for years, and it bears an extremely close resemblance to Track 4 on Jeff Mills’ multi limited – and dead hard to get – Axis 9 release or even on his production of “Enforcement” on the even harder to get Basic Channel #1!

In short – “Space Mountain” – is complete spellbinding experimentation. A lesson in restraint, and a lesson in taking a sound, and drive it to the point of no return…….and that’s without ever bringing in a kick!

If you’re a DJ and you’re searching for the perfect drop………this it!

If not – take the trip anyway…….enjoy your ride!

For someone that loves music and listens to all kinds of it, I am decidedly unadventurous about it.

For someone that loves music and listens to all kinds of it, I am decidedly unadventurous about it. I don’t really buy music – that is, I pretty much only buy vinyl, and when I do it’s usually somewhat DJ oriented, and in any case I only really by stuff I come across in a shop or online.

So here I’m compiling a short list of music I’m interested in checking out (or maybe listening to a little bit more). I’m going to let it build for a little while; I think the results might be surprising.

I guess I’ve been listening to so much electronic stuff for a while that I need to diversify a bit. I’m going to try to represent some of the breadth of the musical styles that interest me in this list, and then hopefully I’ll develop some ideas of stuff to track down.

Although basically I think there are more or less two categories: newer releases or stuff I’ve missed in genres I’m pretty familiar with, and more obscure / indie / avant-garde stuff I’ve never really come across. Or actually that isn’t right at all. It’s that there’s some stuff I’m familiar with, but would like to become more so – like Sonic Youth or Fugazi (I know, weird examples) – and then other stuff that I haven’t really heard but know I would like to – like Kayo Dot, or Merzbow, or more J Dilla stuff since I’m always a couple years behind everyone else (these really are some strange examples).

Perhaps strangely, topping of the list (and the only artist that really comes to mind at the moment) is Angels of Light – which for those who don’t know is more or less the solo project of Michael Gira (Swans).

OK, this list isn’t going to make sense to anyone else anyway. So, yeah:

Angels of Light (I love the Swans. Gira is a genius. Gotta pick up at least one album)

Fugazi (I know – I’m way behind. I’ve only really listened to Repeater all the way through)

New Order (not as familiar as I should be. I have one of their much, much later albums)

Merzbow (I’ve only heard about one song they did with Discordance Axis. I’d be interested in hearing some of their stuff)

Swans (I already know and love ‘em. But I need to summon up courage and listen to their back-catalog – like pre ‘89. As well as just listen more to the rest of their stuff)

Sonic Youth (I really am not familiar with their stuff much)

Bikini Kill (never heard their stuff. I probably should)

The Replacements (never listened to them, feel like I should at least check them out)

(the direction this list is taking is really unexpected, but then I guess it’s a success)

Husker Du (I’ve listened to some of Bob Mould’s solo stuff, maybe I should add these guys in at this point – it seems apropos)

Desert Sessions (I wish I could put Kyuss on the list but I’ve listened to everything they’ve put out, really – except Desert Sessions)

Kayo Dot (I have all three Maudlin of the Well albums and love them, seen Kayo Dot play, loved them… now I just have to pick up their albums)

Discordance Axis (specifically The Inalienable Dreamless. I’ve listened to a lot of their other stuff. This is one of the only grindcore bands I listen to)

hm. I just actually contemplated adding Napalm Death to the list. I think I’m getting way off track here. Going to post this now. Look forward to future edits – and oh. Suggestions please (especially if you can recommend some good industrial. Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails are about the extent of my familiarity).

P.S. I can’t believe how much rock music is on this list. To my readers that don’t know me (and maybe even those that do) this list could be really misleading about my current listening habits. I basically listen to rock music once every two weeks (that should explain why there’s hardly anything contemporary about my list). But for my appalling ignorance there would be way more house music represented here. I need some help here. Or maybe just need to get out more.

I do want to get the new Martyn album (Great Lengths), and anything that D-Bridge releases (either by himself or on his label – there, click on the link and listen to the songs in the beatport player. that’s more the kind of stuff I’ve been listening to. oh, and even more so stuff like this, this, or this. you really should click on one or two of those.) And yeah it goes without saying: when it comes to Chain Reaction, Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound – more. . . I just can’t get enough of it. (Discovering these labels…maybe it’s something like…I don’t know, the appropriate religious metaphor fails me.)

OK, it’s late. Enough. I’m off to sleep. Love to you all.

(RG)

* # *

(Thiago Filardi)

* # *

(Ruy Gardnier)

* # *

Ölsponsrade företagsevent i hotellobbies. Meningslösa kändisar som glider förbi onödiga köer. Stureplan. Hemliga gästlistor. Dr Alban. Slutna medlemskap.

Luke Hess – Light In The Dark

Luke Hess är tillsammans med Scott “Deadbeat” Monteith Basic Channels trognaste lärjunge. Light in the dark är en ättling i rakt nedstigande led till Phylyps Trak. Lyssna särskilt på “Transform” och “Self Control”. Inga större överraskningar. Definitivt inga besvikelser heller.

Martyn – Great Lengths

DJ Sprinkles – Midtown 120 Blues

House isn’t so much a sound as a situation.

There must be a hundred records with voice-overs asking, “What is house?”

The answer is always some greeting card bullshit about “life, love, happiness….”

The House Nation likes to pretend clubs are an oasis from suffering

But suffering is in here with us.

If you can get in, that is.

I think of one time in New York when they wouldn’t let me into the Loft,

and I could hear they were actually playing one of my records on the dance floor at that very moment.

I shit you not.

Let’s keep sight of the things you’re trying to momentarily escape from.

After all, it’s that larger context that created the house movement and brought you here.

House is not universal.

House is hyper-specific: East Jersey, Loisaida, West Village, Brooklyn – places that conjure specific beats and sounds. As for the sounds of New York dance floors themselves,

today’s house classics might have gotten worked into a set once in a while,

but the majority of music at every club was major label vocal shit.

I don’t care what anybody tells you.

Besides, New York Deep House may have started out as minimal, mid-tempo instrumentals,

but when distributors began demanding easy selling vocal tracks,

even the label “Strictly Rhythm” betrayed the promise of it’s own name by churning out strictly vocal after strictly vocal.

Most Europeans still think “Deep House” means shitty, high energy vocal house.

So what was the New York house sound? House wasn’t so much a sound as a situation.

The majority of DJ’s – DJ’s like myself – were nobody’s in nowhere clubs:

unheard and unpaid.

In the words of Sylvester:

reality was less “everybody is a star,” and more “I who have nothing.”

Twenty years later, major distribution gives us Classic House,

the same way soundtracks in Vietnam war films gave us Classic Rock.

The contexts from which the Deep House sound emerged are forgotten:

Sexual and gender crises

Transgendered sex work

Black market hormones

Drug and alcohol addiction,

Loneliness

Racism,

HIV,

ACT-UP,

Thompkins Sq. Park,

Police brutality,

Queer-bashing,

Underpayment,

Unemployment

And censorship

All at 120 beats per minute.

These are the Midtown 120 Blues.

Achim Brandenburg is a bit of a Chicago house and Detroit techno buff, an area of expertise he first picked up as a record buyer for Hard Wax in his hometown of Saarbruecken. That was during the heyday of soulful house labels such as Prescription, and it’s a sound which still can be heard in Prosumer’s sets today. “My heart is beating for the early Chicago/Detroit sound and for music that feels similar and transports this feeling into today,” explains Achim. Slowly the consumer turned into Prosumer, issuing his first record on 240 Volt in 2004.

A year later came ‘The Craze’ on Playhouse, then vocal duties on Sebo K’s ‘Moved’, both of which became bona fide hits, melding house stabs with soulful vocals. Achim’s latest record is a collaboration with producer Murat Tepeli, with whom he also performs live, for Ostgun Ton, the record arm of Berlin’s Berghain/Panoramabar complex, where Achim is now a resident DJ.

“Whatever I do has got to be real,” says Achim about his DJing. “If a record doesn’t move me emotionally or physically, I won’t play it out. I have to feel the music and I’m always trying to share my feelings with the crowd on the floor. If everything goes down well, there’s an exchange going on. I try to keep a balance between pushing people’s buttons and surprising them. I’m sharing my inner emotions. And dance music has got to be horny.”

Ale nuda. Wieszam tu w końcu podsumowanie płytowe roku, mimo niedokończonych alfabetycznych rekolekcji (to be continued, w miarę wolnego czasu).
