En septiembre cubrimos la boda de Ale y Carlos. Lo que más nos gustó? Los zapatos rojos de Ale!   Nos encantan las novias que hacen cosas diferentes, así que bien por Ale!! Estamos pendientes con la sesión de novia (para terminar de sacarle el jugo a los zapatos!). Estas son algunas de nuestras fotos favoritas. Mil gracias Ale y Carlos!

El presente documento lo encontre al estar revisando el ramo de mercedes del Archivo General de la Nación. No es un tema que entre en lo que investigo pero que lo publico en este espacio porque me pareció interesante.

Nosotros el Presidente y Oidores de la Audiencia Real de la Nueva España etc. Por cuanto por parte de vos Domingo de Corona y Gonzalo Hernandez de Dueñas Mayordomos de la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en terminos de esta ciudad nos fue pedido y suplicado que en cumplimiento de lo que por esta Real Audiencia fue mandado a Andres de Cabrera repartidor que a sido de los indios de las cobranzas de esta ciudad cerca de los treinta indios que se le mandaron dar para el servicio de la dicha Ermita del cual dicho mandamiento antes nos hicistes presentación mandasemos a Francisco Muños repartidor que al presente es de los dichos indios guardase e cumpliese el dicho mandamiento y en cumplimiento de el se diese y repartiese los dichos treinta indios de servicio para la dicha hermita por la presente mandamos al susodicho Francisco Muños repartidor que es al presente que de los indios que se traen a esta ciudad para el dicho repartimiento os de y haga dar  diez indios para el servicio y reparos de la dicha Ermita y casa de ella pagandoles cada semana lo que por esta Real Audiencia esta acordado y haciendoles buen tratamiento lo qual mandamos que asi hagais y cumplais por el tiempo que fuere la voluntad de esta Real Audiencia fecha en México a 10 de octubre de mil e quinientos y sesenta y cinco años señalado de la Real Audiencia y firmado del secretario Bilches.

One cool Tuesday morning, last September 22, just days before the great flood of Metro Manila, Arnold and I visited the great scholar –and our dear friend– Señor Guillermo Gómez Rivera in his Macati home in Barrio María de la Paz. We had our usual discussions about Philippine history and the identity of our nation.

After accompanying Señor Gómez to his Rockwell studio (and after a hearty lunch in nearby Power Plant Mall), Arnold and I passed by the centuries-old Guadalupe Shrine on our way home.

It was early afternoon, and the skies were blanketed by endless gray clouds, giving out a bleak mood throughout the slums neighboring the silent, hulking gray walls of the church. And the people living near the church –almost mindlessly doing routine tasks each and every dying day due– don’t have any idea at all about the significance of this almost forgotten church in Philippine History.

CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF GUADALUPE

The foundations of this church and monastery of the Augustinian Order were laid in 1601 and construction work was finished in 1629. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was chosen Titular Patroness in 1603. After the Chinese uprising of 1639, this sanctuary served as a seat of devotion for the Chinese. The buildings withstood the earthquakes of 1645, 1658, 1754, and 1863; the masonry roof of the church collapsed in the earthquakes of 1880 and the structure was rebuilt in 1882 by Rev. José Corujedo, O.S.A. Site of an orphan asylum and trade school administered by the Augustinian Order for the benefit of the children of the victims of the cholera of 1882. Both church and monastery were gutted by fire in February, 1899, during the early skirmishes between Americans and Filipinos.

As written on the historical marker, the Augustinians began constructing the shrine in the early 1600s. The Provincial Chapter declared the monastery a domus formata on 7 March 1601. A domus formata is a religious house in which reside at least six professed members (four of which should be priests), and this one in Macati was placed under the advocacy of Our Lady of Grace. Construction was completed in 1629. The shrine was named after the world-famous and miraculous Basílica de Guadalupe in México City, México.

The first domus formata was composed of three priests and a lay brother. Later on, the Provincial Chapter of November 30, 1603 received a petition from the Spanish community in Manila and from other prominent Filipinos to change the advocacy. They prevailed when the Provincial Chapter approved the petition. Thus, the Our Lady of Grace became Our Lady of Guadalupe.

It was not until the shrine had its third prior administrator when stone construction commenced. This administrator was Fray Juan de Montes de Oca. But he was not able to finish the project because he was transferred to another mission outpost. And so those who took over his spot continued the construction.

And since the church stood the test of times, it has had its share of countless (and historically famous) Priors Administrator, some of them renowned friar-scholars, such as:

Simón Dantes — widely believed to be the first prior of the Guadalupe Shrine.
Juan de Montes de Oca — started the construction of the stone sanctuary.
Francisco Coronel — published the book Artes y Reglas de la Lengua Pampanga (1617) when he was still in Pampanga.
Hernando Guerrero — became Archbishop of Manila in 1635; best remembered for his feud with Governor General Hurtado de Corcuera.

In my opinion, perhaps the most famous friar who have ever served the altars of the Shrine of Guadalupe was Fray Manuel Blanco of Navia, Zamora, Spain. He entered the Augustinian order when he was just 16 years old. Aside from his religious duties, he was also an erudite and multifaceted scholar who excelled in history, languages, medicine, and even my “favorite” subject — mathematics! When he was assigned to the San Agustín Church, he maintained a garden there (now fondly called as Fr. Blanco’s Garden). But he’s best known for his contributions to natural sciences, particularly botany. This led to the publication of the groundbreaking Flora Filipina. Because of this book, plants can now be classified according to their species, class, and genus. His blessed remains are still in the Guadalupe Shrine.

Dark nights of the Shrine.

The period of seventy years from the War of Independence up to the Second World War was the darkest for the sanctuary. The termination of the Spanish-American War brought about by the ratification of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898 caused the Filipino-American conflict to flare up into an all-out war. Manila was the immediate theater of destruction. It did not take long for the superior American forces to rout the Filipino forces.

The Americans, having cleared the city of the Filipino forces, proceeded eastward to Makati as far as San Pedro. The Filipino soldiers, tipped off of the advancing Americans, positioned themselves in Guadalupe. They outnumbered their enemies. The Americans sensed this, and not having enough troops that would stay behind to safeguard the place from being retaken by the Filipinos, they halted for a day waiting for reinforcement. The next day, the American forces under the command of General Lloyd Wheaton advanced to attack Guadalupe.

Having advanced for a mile, the Americans started to subject Guadalupe to artillery fire together with that of the gunboat Laguna de Bay along the Pásig river. The siege was fierce. The Filipinos under General Pío del Pilar, unable to resist the stronger forces, retreated, but not before they burned the church and the monastery. It was like adding insult to injury because the shrine had already been battered by American artillery fire. This even marked the end of Guadalupe shrine whose aisle Filipinos and Spaniards alike, for almost three centuries, used to throng to manifest their devotion to Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

After the War of Independence, the Guadalupe shrine and the monastery became a foreboding place because it was shrouded by the grasses and trees. Even on its walls the trees grew, dissolving little by little the bricks, the stones and the lime. (“The Guadalupe Shrine” by Rodolfo M. Arreza, O.S.A., Globalcomp, Manila, 1991)

The gross disrespect for God’s home in Guadalupe, Macati didn’t end here. What was left of the abandoned church was further razed to the ground by both American and Japanese artillery during the final days of World War II. In the words of Fr. Arreza, “the walls of the monastery and the shrine became the only standing skeletons left that served as a mute witness of the many misfortunes in the past”.

But Guadalupe couldn’t just die like that.

On 29 July 1970, the Augustinians were recalled to Guadalupe. Patiently, they began reconstructing the church of their predecessors, the church which has harbored countless candles during Tridentine Masses of yore.

And so the magic of Guadalupe persists to this day.

Habíamos dejado el blog abandonado por 3 semanas! Mil disculpas! Ya estamos de regreso listos para compartir más bodas. Empezamos con la boda de Geral y Ricardo (1 de agosto)  Nos ENCANTARON los novios, son de las personas más relajadas y alegres con las que hemos trabajado Geral se arregló en 90 Grados con sus amigas y se la pasaron felices (tip para las novias: inviten a sus amigas a los preparativos para que las ayuden a estar relajadas). Mil gracias Geral y Ricardo por compartir su boda con nosotros !!   

En julio cubrimos la boda de Ximena y Francisco. La boda estuvo de lo más alegre y los novios ni se diga!! Lo difícil ha sido escoger sólo 25 fotos para el post porque en todas salen felices! A continuación compartimos algunas con ustedes. Gracias Ximena y Francisco!!

(Mi querido hermano Peito casi me obligó a crear una categoría para estas historias, estrenándose hoy por cierto)

Últimamente me ha tocado viajar en taxi. Y en efecto, se han presentado varias historias dentro de este particular transporte… Sobresalen dos.

Historia #1: Los  recios viajes de Gulliver.

Día: Jueves Hora: 11.30pm. Trayecto: Xochimilco – Centro de Tlalpan. Chofer: Hombre de pequeña estatura, moreno, 67 años (un día antes de su cumpleaños)

• Gabo: Buenas…
• Chofer: Buenas noches, joven. Tlalpan Centro ¿verdad? (Ya había dicho la dirección por ser taxi de sitio)
• Gabo: Sí, por favor… ¿llevaba mucho esperando?
• Chofer: No, acabo de llegar… ¿Ya a descansar?
• G: Así es… ¿usté se queda toda la noche no?
• C: Sí, pero mañana es día de descanso… no circula el coche y me tomo el día libre.
• G: Y bien merecido, supongo.
• C: Pos sí joven, además mañana me voy a festejar con la familia…
• G: Déjeme adivinar… ¿es su cumpleaños?
• C: ¡Ja! Le atinó a la primera… ¿pos qué comió?
• G: Ya ve… tengo un don para atinarle a los cumpleaños, como que se le nota en la cara a la gente cuando se acerca la fecha. (Temo decirles que es mentira, alcancé a ver la fecha de nacimiento en el tarjetón)
• C: Ahora sí me agarró en curva… (Yo me solté a reír discretamente porque justo estábamos en una curva, no sé si lo dijo a propósito o nomás coincidió)… Ya ni chingan estos, me cae… (un gatito atropellado)
• G: ¿Quienes?
• C: Pos los pinches culeros que manejan bien recio… ya se echaron al pobre animal…
• G: Sí caray, y eso que esta calle es tranquila…
• C: Además van en la pendeja, como si fuera domingo en la Alameda y fueran a pie. Y luego otros que salen de la fiesta, ni le miden al acelerador… aquí mismo, el otro día vi como un cuate se volaba los topes como si fueran clases en la secundaria; iba bien recio y ni se frenaba. Yo pensé “el primer tope, pos no lo vio…” pero no, así se aventó toda la calle. Y queriendo rebasar a huevo; yo me quedé atrás de él pa’ no pagar los platos rotos… total, yo no tengo prisa nunca. Luego me dice el pasaje “voy a tal lado pero llevo prisa”. Yo siempre les digo que yo no… que el que maneja soy yo, y si no les parece pos que tomen otro taxi ¿no?. Mire usté, ahorita porque no hay tráfico pues uno va sin pararse tanto, pero aún así no le puede pisar uno recio… ya ve cómo le fue al pobre gato. Y mire que las distancias han cambiado mucho; yo vivo allá en San Pedro Mártir y bajar a Xochimilco pues no me cuesta nada… pero luego llevar pasajes al aeropuerto o al Norte de la ciudad ¡sí está cabrón! Pos ya me la paso todo el día en el coche… y me gusta manejar ¿eh?, pero tampoco tanto.
• G: No’mbre… con estos tráficos, la ciudad es imposible.
• C: Y eso que uno va sentado, escuchando música o platicando con los usuarios… pero ¿a pie? Fíjese, una vez m’hija se me puso remala, y yo rezaba pa’ que sanara… y la vieron doctores y nada, no había avance. Entonces le hice el fiel juramento a la Virgen de irme caminando descalzo desde mi casa (San Pedro Mártir) hasta la Basílica ¡con mi hija en los brazos! Los primeros kilómetros pues ni una bronca… pero después, no’mbre ya no la ve uno venir… sí está canijo. Y luego la gente se para: “-¿a dónde va? – a la Basílica… -¿no quiere aventón, yo lo acerco? -No gracias, mejor camino.” Y no por desconfianza ¿eh? porque se ve gente de fe, pero una promesa es una promesa y a huevo la tenía que cumplir…
• G: … (yo aún con los ojos muy abiertos, no logré decir palabra alguna, todavía)
• C: ¿Y qué cree joven? Que lo logré. Y no nomás eso ¿eh? Me aventé desde el portón (dijo el nombre pero no me acuerdo) hasta dentro ¡de rodillas!. Y m’hija pos estaba chiquita, tenía como un año y medio cuando se me enfermó.
• G: … Y… ¿Sí alcanzó a rezar o le cerraron? (fue lo único que se me ocurrió, lo juro)
• C: ¡Jaja! Pos sí, ni me acuerdo a qué hora salí de mi casa ni a qué hora llegué allá, pero sí le recé a la Virgen, porque además me la curó (no sé por qué no me sorprendió ese comentario).
• G: ¿Hace cuánto de eso?
• C: Pos échele… mi hija ahora tiene 34 años y vive en Cancún. Allá tiene dos casas que ella se ha comprado solita. Ha trabajado recio, pero ya la está haciendo. Y porque la dejó el marido… un cabrón que se hizo alcohólico… Se fueron juntos porque él tenía una buena chamba, lo contrataban en los yates para amenizar las fiestas…
• G: ¿Él es músico?
• C: No, él toca el piano y la guitarra (¿?) y lo contrataban pa’ las fiestas en un yate… y no le pagaban mal, pero de fiesta en fiesta pues le empezó a gustar el chupe y lo terminaron corriendo. Y bueno, de ahí surgieron muchas broncas con mi hija, y ella le pidió el divorcio… y como ella tiene (hizo señal con la mano para decir ‘huevos’) pues este cabrón lueguito se lo dio, pa’ no meterse en broncas con ella. Porque salió brava m’hija ¿eh? Y ya ahorita está muy bien, trabaja mucho, eso sí… pero gana bien.
• G: ¿Y no va ir a Cancún a verla?
• C: Pos no todavía… estos cabrones de la Secretaría de Transportes no me sueltan unos papeles, que dicen que todavía debo una lana… ya me falta poco, nomás 700 pesos más y ya termino ese trámite… pero es que son bien colgados y careros. Ahí me tiene yendo hasta Atzacoalco (No sé pero se oye lejos) desde San Pedro por un pinche trámite… Y que no lo reciben en otro lado, nomás allá. ¡Cabrones! Pudieran poner una oficina en el norte, en el centro y en el sur ¿no? Además por esas cosas hay más tráfico… porque la gente del sur tiene que ir hasta el norte de la ciudad por esos pinches trámites; si pusieran una oficina por acá pos no se hace tanto tráfico ¿no? cada quien me movería por sus lugares… Y además la gente que va en la pendeja… Pero ya, mañana no circulo y me voy con la familia. No quiero gastar mucho para ir a ver a m’hija a Cancún, que ya tiene mucho que no voy pa’llá, nomás me acuerdo que el mar es azúl, azúl; y la arena blanca, blanca…

(Ambos nos quedamos un rato en silencio, con la mirada perdida, como si estuviéramos contemplando aquel horizonte de aquellas playas lejanas)

• G: Si puede pararse adelante de la camioneta blanca, por favor.
• C: Claro que sí joven…
• G: Pues muchas gracias y feliz cumpleaños.
• C: Ándele joven, gracias a usté. Buenas noches.
• G: Buenas…

Bajé del automóvil, saludé al poli en turno, entré a mi casa y me quedé pensando: ¿No habrá tenido que regresar a la Basílica para que ahora le sanaran los pies?…

La inversión inicial que se requiere es de 105 millones de pesos. El dinero que se recaude estará destinado para obras de mantenimiento de estructuras, restauración del altar, mosaicos artísticos, pinturas, vitrales, el reloj monumental, iluminación, bancas y fachadas entre otras cosas. Los trabajos de restauración han sido autorizados por el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) por ser un edificio histórico y serán los encargados de la supervisión en las obras.

Ahora, si el gobierno federal destina recursos mediante la intervención de conaculta ¿para qué agrega más caridad en efectivo?. Nadie niega el valor histórico al recinto que ya no es sólo de los católicos mexicanos, sino también lo es de cualquier ciudadano que guste de apreciar esa obra histórica, es parte de nuestro patrimonio y se debe cuidar hasta donde la actual crisis lo permita. ¿Acaso un bien inmueble es ás merecedero de caridad que cualquier persona en desgracia en este país? No se critica a la feligresía católica, es sólo que tal vez faltó tino en esta campaña de restauración. La organización “Sumando Amor” demuestra un poco de insensibiliad al destinar tanto dinero a una obra que no da de comer a la gente, que no la cura de sus males carnales que hacen sufrir al ser humano, ¿Dónde está el amor en ese donativo?

Los fieles católicos tiene la gran oportunidad de ser solidarios con aquellos que están hoy en plena desgracia; quizás no es tiempo de invertir la caridad en la roca, sino en la persona, quizás cuando nuestra realidad sea otra podrían, ahora si, ver por el patrimonio histórico de los católicos y mexicanos.

Sonido Gitana es  un  sonido con gente joven: en él toman parte un niño en muletas de tan sólo ocho años, a quien ya le apasiona la música y colabora jalando cables  y moviendo luces, y  su hermano de 15 años, a quien le llama la atención el ritmo musical y lo demuestra poniéndole a su público lo mejor para bailar y gozar. Estos niños, inquietados por el movimiento sonidero, son el apoyo y la ilusión  de su padre y no faltan los rezos de una madre y esposa para que siempre les vaya bien.

Me llamó la atención una maqueta bien elaborada, con bafles, luces y piso decorado como tablero de ajedrez, muy bonita, que además se enciende y suena. Me di cuenta de que a grandes y pequeños les llamaba la atención: era un sonido en pequeño muy bien representado, tenía además la imagen de una virgen al centro y cuando pregunté a Sonido Gitana en qué se habían inspirado me respondieron: EN LA VIRGEN, LA VIRGEN SONIDERA.

Los tiempos no estaban muy bien para ellos y los invitaron a una peregrinación sonidera a la basílica de Guadalupe, y ellos en agradecimiento y como petición llevaron a la virgen en una maqueta de sonido para pedirle trabajo para todos los sonideros del mundo  y protección  para que nunca corran peligro en su camino y para que no se estancaran los evento, ya que detrás de la diversión hay mucho trabajo y riesgo de por medio.

Esta maqueta la presentaron en el metro Salto del Agua en la exposición organizada por la Unión de Guerreros Sonideros, y también se pudo admirar en el Centro Cultural de España, entre una gran galería de fotos. Gracias a todos los que hicieron posible esta última exposición  y gracias a Sonido Gitana por llevar y mostrar a la Virgen en una maqueta de sonido demostrando que mientras la gente tenga fé todo puede ser posible…

A principios de febrero cubrimos la boda Sol Ferreiro. Camila y Alfredo se casaron en la iglesia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y después tuvieron una fiesta alegrísima en el Hotel Hilton Princess San Salvador. La felicidad de Camila es contagiosa y como siempre hemos dicho, una novia feliz hace el trabajo mas fácil!! A continuación compartimos unas cuantas fotos con ustedes:

Todos estos lugares son ideales para la distracción y por si fuera poco, ofrecen diversión a bajo costo, por lo tanto, si el próximo fin de semana te encuentras aburrido en tu casa no olvides que son una excelente opción y visítalos.

Corría el año 2008, caluroso invierno en el hemisferio norte, en particular en las zonas tropicales de México. El director, administrador y asistente de Spettacolo, Daniél Rendón contrató mis servicios para rodar durante 20 días el viaje  de turismo que ofrece Viajes Meca en el Centro y Sud Este del país.

Comenzando en México DF, donde nos reunimos con un grupo de turistas de origen italiano, unas 40 personas, el guía y el chofer del bus; que nos acompañarían la mayoría del viaje, viajaríamos durante casi todo el mes de Marzo.

El Crew de Rodaje

El equipo tecnológico estaba compuesto por una cámara SONY HVR A1 y un tripié de fotografía fija; el cual casi no tuvo utilidad ya que la mayoría de los monumentos históricos y arqueológicos prohíben su uso. Es decir, una cámara muy compacta, lo mínimo necesario.

Es importante considerar que se trató de un grupo de personas muy amistosas y que hicieron del viaje un tiempo a gusto. Quiero agradecer a Bárbara Mambelli por colaborar con fotografías que fueron incluídas en este video y que permitieron ilustrar aspectos que quedaban más allá de las limitaciones del equipo.

El itinerario inició en México DF luego El Zócalo, La Catedral, El Palacio Nacional, La Basílica de Guadalupe, El Sitio Arquológico de Teotihuacán, Puebla, Tehuacán, Ciudad de Oaxaca, Sitio Arqueológicos de Monte Albán, El Árbol del Tule, El Sitio Arqueológico de Mitla, El Cañón del Sumidero, Ciudad de San Cristobal de las Casas, San Juan Chamula, Zinacantán, Las Cascadas de Agua Azul, El Sitio Arqueológico de Palenque, La Ciudad de Campeche, El sitio arqueológico de Uxmal, La Ciudad de Mérida, El Sitio Arqueológico de Cichén Itzá, culminando con Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen e Isla Mujeres.

Basilica de Guadalupe Shrine In Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Crowds thronged Mexico’s holiest Catholic shrine on Friday in one of the world’s biggest regular pilgrimages, with many of the faithful seeking spiritual support as the economy slips toward recession.

Streams of people from across Mexico and as far away as the United States, worshiped in front of a centuries-old cloak emblazoned with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is said to have appeared to a 16th-century Indian peasant in December 1531.

Many walked for days carrying images of the dark-skinned virgin on their backs to pray at the giant basilica in Mexico City for health, forgiveness of their sins and, as Mexico’s economy slows, help to find jobs and money.

“I am hoping the virgin will help my husband find a job,” said Margarita Lopez as she led her two small children through the crowd toward the giant basilica. “He’s in the United States and has been out of work for two months.”

Prospects for Mexico’s economy have dimmed sharply with the deepening recession in the United States. The country sends about 80 percent of its exports to its neighbor to the north and money sent home by millions of migrant workers there provides a critical cash lifeline for many impoverished Mexican families.

Economists who were optimistic that Mexico could skirt a recession now fret that a deep downturn may be difficult to avoid.

A river of mostly poor people poured into the shrine from the early morning. Some crawled the trash-strewn final stretch on their knees past troupes of twirling dancers decked out in Aztec garb.

Church and municipal leaders expect several million people to make the pilgrimage in the days up to and including Friday and claim the basilica is the second most visited Catholic church in the world after St Peter’s in Rome.

VENDORS GRUMBLED
More than 2 million Muslims attended the Haj in Mecca this year, a lower number than usual after the Saudi Arabian government cracked down on pilgrims attending the event without permits.

Despite the huge crowds in Mexico City, vendors grumbled that business was slow.

“They’re all looking but no one is buying,” said Ramon Martinez, who runs a stall selling religious pictures, disposable cameras and snacks.

“By this time last year I had sold a lot more,” he said before rushing up to an old school bus festooned with flowers and pictures of the virgin and the pope to show his wares to newly arrived pilgrims.

The pilgrimage to the basilica has been an annual event since the late 17th century. The Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared to a peasant named Juan Diego in 1531 on a hilltop which had once been a shrine to an ancient Aztec goddess.

After Juan Diego told a bishop of his vision, the virgin’s image later appeared on his cloak, according to legend. The event was key in converting Mexico to Catholicism.

The humble woodcutter was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002 in an effort by the Vatican to reach out to Latin American believers.

Thursday morning continued without major incidents in the arrival of tens of thousands of pilgrims to the Basilica de Guadalupe through the five main corridors, although there was strict security.

Public Security authorities for the Federal District said that its entire special operations force of 1,850 officers had been dispatched to provide security and surveillance for the pilgrimages that began to arrive in the city since Thursday.

The police, in addition to establishing security perimeters in the area of the Basilica, have also been dispatched around the perimeter of the city to provide security along the five main routes into the city.

Cubrimos la boda Castro – O’byrne a finales de julio pasado. Katya y Jaime tienen una historia muy linda (A Jaime le gusto Katya desde que tenía 14 años!) Creo que por eso se llevan tan bien y se veían tan felices en la boda!    Le vamos a pedir a Jaime que nos cuente su historia para poder publicarla en el blog. Para mientras, estas son algunas de nuestras fotos favoritas.

One of John McCain’s final activities on his recent trip to Latin America could earn him thousands of Latino votes, or at least a new affinity from Hispanics: He visited the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The Basilica de Guadalupe is Mexico’s most important religious sanctuary, and it ranks among the most important worship places in all of Latin America. The Basilica houses the original apron that was given to Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant, when the Virgin appeared before him in the 16th Century.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patroness saint of Mexico and the Americas; she is also referred to as the “Virgen Morena” (browned-skinned Virgin) and as the “Mother of all Mexicans.” Her image is worshiped with such devotion that almost every Catholic home in Mexico, or with Mexican roots in the U.S., has a picture, an altar or icon of the Virgen.

As Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes (as cited on Wikipedia) observed, “One may no longer consider himself a Christian, but you cannot truly be considered a Mexican unless you believe in the Virgin of Guadalupe.” Echoing that sentiment, Nobel laureate Octavio Paz (as cited on Wikipedia) said, “The Mexican people, after more than two centuries of experiments, have faith only in the Virgin of Guadalupe and the National Lottery.”

When in trouble, Mexican Catholics pray for la Virgen to intercede on their behalf, and when a miracle or “favor” is granted, the recipient offers a sacrifice or a gift to thank her. A common gesture to thank the Virgen is to make a pilgrimage to the Basilica, particularly around December 12, the day her feast is celebrated.

For Latino immigrants, the Virgen de Guadalupe represents an icon that gives them hope and helps them maintain their faith while facing problems. In fact, it is common to see the image of the Virgen carried by faithful participants during immigration reform rallies and events.

Historical Significance

The image of the Virgen de Guadalupe has been present during critical events in Mexican history. During Mexico’s Independence War from Spain in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, known as the “Father of the Nation,” initiated and fought with a flag of la Virgen in his hand. During Mexico’s civil war a century later, Emiliano Zapata and his peasant army fought the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz using a banner of the Virgen as their flag.

In the modern era, then-candidate Vicente Fox began his presidential bid carrying a flag of the Virgen de Guadalupe that was given to him by his children; his victory ended the PRI’s more than 70-year political reign in Mexico.

McCain

For candidate John McCain, visiting the Basilica and getting a picture taken next to the Virgen could be a powerful tool to attract the votes of Latinos, especially those older immigrants and those with low-literacy levels as they would perceive him as a candidate who relates to them and pays respect to one of the most sacred elements in their lives. As far as political icons go, this one could work miracles.
