In Martin McClellan’s most recent column for Timothy McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, he addresses Benjamin Franklin and two of the more popular fonts of the eighteenth century, Caslon and its challenger, Baskerville.  In an incident apparently famous to font aficionados, Franklin wrote to Baskerville’s creator, John Baskerville, that he had been speaking with a man who criticized the new font for its difficulty to read.  However, Franklin exposed the man’s ignorance by presenting to him a book printed in Caslon but saying it used Baskerville.   The man continued his diatribe against Baskerville, unknowingly criticizing his preferred font.  I was unaware of this story until reading the column and found it both entertaining and in keeping with Franklin’s character.

However, even more intriguing was a long tangent in the middle of the column regarding the first two printings of the Declaration of Independence.

Because of its popularity, Caslon played an important role in revolutionary America. Like on that transcendent day, July 4, 1776, when the American Continental Congress had ratified their Declaration. They were faced with the problem of spreading the word of this up-to-then secret document. Somebody, likely Thomas Jefferson himself, secreted the text a few blocks to the print shop of Mr. John Dunlop, who spent the night setting the declaration into lead type. He printed 200 copies, now referred to as “The Dunlop Broadside,” the first reproduction of those famous words. With those copies in hand, they could get the text around the colonies, since there would have been no other way to distribute the information at the time.

A second printing of the Declaration was commissioned by congress in January 1777. The Dunlop copy was printed before the famous calligraphic copy was signed on August 2nd, so it was missing the signatories. Mary Katherine Goddard, a publisher and the first American postmistress, printed this copy. “The Goddard Broadside” contains the list of all signers.

Both copies of the declaration were printed using Caslon. Think about it: the first two printed copies of the Declaration of Independence were printed using type from a British designer. Doesn’t that make the ideas just slightly more subversive?

I can’t say that I had ever considered the subversive side of font selection.

New artist Baskerville has recently released the Reloaded EP under brilliant Dutch record label Boemklatsch records. Their style is slow (120 bpm) heavy electro, not to be messed with. But the remixes on the EP are an equal force to be reckoned with. Including bouncy house with Audiostalkers, off-beat dubstep with Elected and a more awesome house from Boemklatsch themselves. What do I do at school?  I trace fonts.  “orz

I never thought I would ever need to know the difference between Garamond, Baskerville, and Bodoni; never dreamed about it.  Well, I do now.  That’s why the prof made us trace these three fonts so their subtle differences will be scarred in our memories forever.  Sounds easy enough, how hard can tracing fonts be?  You’re just tracing some letters.  It’s not so easy when you have to trace them in 80 pt size with the prof expecting the best from you to get an A.

We had to space them out ourselves too.  I traced the fonts in pencil first because I’m a pencil person.  Things turn out better, or so I think, when I start with pencil first.  And it’s easy to fix my mistakes too. ^^

Retraced the pencil lines using some fine pigment liner.

Then the easy part was finishing the fonts to spec by hatching or filling in the fonts with a thicker pigment liner.

Total time used: 2hr 30min.  I could’ve shaved one hour from it if I skipped tracing with pencil, but I would be kicking myself if I made a mistake.  I know people in my class who took three or four hours doing this assignment because they didn’t trace it with pencil first.  Everyone, be thankful for computers and printers!

If you still think tracing 80 pt fonts is easy, print out a set and try it for yourself.  You’ll feel the pain. 

Featuring Baskerville Old Face

La meva parella (no de pòquer, sinó de projecte vital… la meva dona, vaja) em va donar l’ultimàtum: si no feia neteja de papers al despatx del fons, les conseqüències per a la nostra convivència podien ser terribles. Així que aquest estiu, tira-tira, he anat tirant trastos. És el que té fer net: que, entre molta morralla que acaba al contenidor, sempre trobes alguna excepció que cal conservar. I quina és la millor manera per a servar de l’oblit allò que vares escriure 20 anys ençà (i que no havies tornat a llegir)? Penjar-ho al blog?.

No sé per quins inescrutables motius el Butlletí Informatiu de la Universitat de les Illes Balears (nº 9) gosà publicar, el novembre del 1986, aquesta carta que, com alumne de la UIB, dirigia al ministre d’Educació d’aleshores. Per als més joves (o per als desmemoriats) recordem que José María Maravall, catedràtic de Sociologia a la Complutense, va ser ministre (1982-88) amb Felipe González. Notareu que al 1986, de jovenet, servidor ja era de la broma i declarat partidari de la ironia, per molt empipat que estigués.

Crec, sens dubte, que –com deien els nostres majors– de la desgràcia de Judes, Sant Macià tragué ventures. Per ço, vull trametre-us les més expressives gràcies, senyor, per la vostra sempre sàvia decisió. Gràcies, idò, per haver-nos mantingut durant alguns mesos entre la candidesa i la ingenuïtat pròpies de la nostra condició d’estudiants. Dr. Stephen Baskerville e-mailed met to let me know about an important article in the Washington Times about the new show on the anti-male “Lifetime” network. If you want to understand why men don’t want to be husbands and fathers any more, read this entire piece.

Excerpt:

More than 90 percent of fathers with joint custody paid the support due, according to a Census Bureau report (Series P-23, No. 173). So deadbeats are in the minority. Also, most so-called deadbeat dads actually are dead broke. Two-thirds of men who fail to make child-support payments earn poverty-level wages, according to the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement. Most of the others are unemployed.

Bruce Walker, executive coordinator at the District Attorneys Council in Oklahoma City, who ran the state’s child-support enforcement program for three years and jailed hundreds of fathers for nonpayment, told the Newark Star-Ledger in 2002: “These men are seldom the mythical monsters described by politicians.”

“Many times I prosecuted impoverished men,” he told the Star-Ledger. “I prosecuted one deadbeat dad who had been hospitalized for malnutrition and another who lived in the bed of a pickup truck.”

All three are worth reading because they are full of statistics that will shock you. Here is the best bit from the third:

Ostensibly created to recover welfare costs, child support enforcement on the federal level has failed and now costs taxpayers more than $3 billion annually. More seriously, it pays mothers to divorce or forgo marriage, thus creating the very problem it is supposed to alleviate.

Mothers are not the only ones who profit from fatherless children. State governments generate revenue from child support at federal taxpayers’ expense. By paying states according to the amount of child support they collect, federal programs give states an interest in more fatherless children. The more broken homes there are, the more revenue for the state.

Don’t forget to read the facts on the lack of male teachers in the schools, which undermines men’s ability to achieve and to be responsible. And when you’re done with that, you can read about the problem of no-fault divorce and the family court system. (A shorter version is linked here)

For those of you who are pro-life or pro-traditional marriage, I want to advise you that this issue is also a very important, although under-reported, issue for social conservatives. Fathers matter, and the state has policies in place that are discouraging men from their traditional role in the family. In the case of a divorce, fathers almost never get custody, and sometimes they do not see their children for years.

Before, I wrote about the fact that 40% of new births are to unwed mothers. Generous benefits provided by the government ensure that fathers are dispensable. Over 20 million children in the United States are raised without a father in the home. And I’m sure you know the social costs to young men and women: violence, anxiety, promiscuity, unwed motherwood, teen pregnancy, abortion, suicides, depression, drug addiction, etc.

And don’t even get me started on the false allegations of rape, harassment, etc., such as the recent Duke University lacrosse scandal. Women who make these false allegations are almost never punished! Over two-thirds of divorces are initiated by women for “irreconcilable differences”. You have to understand that thoughtful men notice these things, and they will make decisions accordingly.

Surprise! Men don’t like being treated poorly by the state. Treat us poorly enough and we’ll find other things to do with our lives than get marriage and raise children. Qué grata sorpresa y qué gran alegría nos llevamos el 24 de marzo, cuando RTVE dió a conocer que Joaquín Guzmán sería el nuevo comentarista de Eurovisión 2009 en sustitución del incombustible José Luis Uribarri.

“El locutor de radio Joaquín Guzmán va a ser el comentarista oficial de TVE en Eurovisión 2009, tanto en la primera Semifinal (12 de mayo), como en la Gran Final (16 de mayo) del eurofestival que tendrán lugar en Moscú. Guzmán estará en la capital rusa junto con la Delegación de TVE, participando en todos los actos oficiales y de promoción de Soraya, la candidata española este 2009″.

Este verano pasado tuvimos la suerte de conocer personalmente a Joaquín Guzmán cuando trabajaba en el programa “Noches en la Expo” de Aragón Radio que  se emitia desde el Anfiteatro 43 del recinto Expo.

El 4 de Julio de 2008 aprovechando el XII Blogglellón que se célebro en la Expo, Aragón Radio quiso entrevistar ese día a varios bloggeros y Joaquín Guzmán dentro del apartado musical entrevistó a Rosa de la revista digital Tgusta y a nosotros mismos por administrar el blog sobre Daniel Zueras.

También el 8 del mismo mes Joaquín Guzmán presentó en ”Noches en la Expo” la versión pop del Himno de la Expo interpretado por Daniel Zueras, lo cual nos llena de orgullo por la acción mediática que tuvo el tesón imposible de los que aquí escribimos, como el propio locutor mencionó en directo.

Sin olvidar tampoco la entrevista que en el mismo programa realizó a nuestro buen amigo Alejandro Monserrat, además de a otros muchos artistas aragoneses, debiendo destacarse el apoyo y difusión de  Joaquín a dos bandas aragonesas que seguimos muy de cerca: Baskerville y Los Peces.

Para recordar también la entrevista a Daniel Zueras en su programa de radio “La Rockola” en 2007, sin lugar a discusión la entrevista musical más completa que le han hecho hasta la fecha a Daniel, al que se dedicó todo el programa y en la que presentó y repasó con detalle el contenido del disco “Siempre Sale el Sol”, así como los proyectos profesionales del artista demostrando que conoce los entresijos musicales como pocos.  

Guzmán se hizo muy conocido con el programa de M80 Radio, “La Gramola”, pero ha realizado radiofórmula y ha presentado varios programas especializados. También fue colaborador de Iñaki Gabilondo en el programa de la SER “Hoy por Hoy” durante seis años. Ahora encabeza el proyecto musical en Internet de Rockola.fm, donde puede escucharse todo tipo de música pero también todas las canciones que han participado en Eurovisión.

En relación a su elección como comentarista, Joaquín Guzmán  ha confesado estar “muy ilusionado” con este proyecto. Según ha explicado, ve el Festival de Eurovisión, sobretodo, desde 2002, año en el que participó Rosa, sin embargo, le presta especial atención desde 2007, una año antes de que TVE organizara “Salvemos Eurovisión”.

Según él lo más importante para un comentarista de Eurovisión es “transmitir la emoción que tiene un programa de televisión como este. Lo único que sí voy a procurar es no hacer previsiones, para mí es la única premisa“. “Contaré lo que he visto, veré los ensayos y eso explicaré, ya que estaré en un sitio privilegiado donde no pueden estar los telespectadores”.

Así, para este locutor los momentos más importantes de la noche de la Gran Final son las actuaciones y las votaciones. Para las actuaciones anuncia que hará los “comentarios justos“, e intentará aportar mucha emoción en el momento de las votaciones.

Por otro lado José Luis Uribarri acepta con deportividad el cambio: “Si TVE ha elegido a Joaquín Guzmán está en su pleno derecho y es porque confía en él“. Pero también, lo acepta con resignación: “Me hubiera gustado narrar la final de Eurovisión“.

En cuanto a las declaraciones de su sustituto Joaquín Guzmán afirmando que no quiere hacer predicciones sobre el ganador, Uribarri cree que él si las hace al jugar “con la ventaja de 25 años de experiencia de retransmisiones de este festival. Es lógico que cada uno tenga su estilo y que él se olvide de los antecedentes“.

Aunque no sabe si estará presente en la final al tener sólo contrato para las galas de clasificación, no duda en ofrecerse: “Creo que donde yo podía dar más juego era en la narración de la final. Ahora no sé que haré“. Definitivamente Uribarri formara parte del jurado español.

Nuestra enhorabuena por esta gran oportunidad que se le brinda a este gran profesional de la radio y a partir de ahora de la Televisión.

Spring is approaching, and many students are changing their diet and exercise habits to shed the winter weight. It has been proven that students gain the most weight over the winter season. This is mainly because students aren’t as active and they eat unhealthy amounts of food. Spring is the best time to start eating healthier and to get out and get active. “Being healthy is important to me and it makes me feel good,” said Trisha Johnson, IWCC student.
First off, dieting is a big issue and the best way to start dieting is to look at portion sizes. It is best to start off dieting by cutting down on the portions of food that is consumed. For instance, look at the serving size and just eat one serving of food. But, of course,  most people eat more than a serving. It is mostly important to do this with unhealthy foods. If you eat chips, put one serving of chips in a bowl and put the bag away. If you leave the bag in front of you, you will eat more. Also, experts say that easing into a diet is a lot easier than cutting yourself off completely.
The next step is to plan your diet around the food guide pyramid. Look at each food category and see the daily recommended amount that you need of each respective food group and then and plan your day’s meals out. Eating five littler meals a day is a lot better than three big ones. Keeping a journal is a good way to stay on top of things. “It’s easy to eat unhealthy food, and if you start a diet and don’t stick to it, it’s pointless,” said Nathan Miller.
Getting physically active is the next important step in becoming healthier. It is proven that walking is one of the healthiest things someone can do. If you have a dog, go outside on a nice day and take the dog for a walk. Many IWCC students have discovered the amazing game that is disc golf. The Treasure Cove disc golf course is conveniently located right on campus and disc golf is a game that anyone can play and have fun. If you are really looking to get into shape you can go jogging or go the local YMCA, or fitness center. If you’re living on campus, and it’s a nice day, you can go out and walk through campus, if it’s not so nice outside maybe you could walk the halls of campus. “You can eat healthy all you want but to be fit you need to exercises too, when you exercise regularly it shouldn’t matter what you eat,” said B.J. Baskerville.
The main thing to remember is to stay motivated once you see improvements in yourself you will want to keep on going with it. Don’t let your diet slip, dedicate yourself and stick to it. Make a schedule and plan out your meals and activities a week in advance and keep to it. One of the main reasons diet and exercising fail is because of a lack of dedication.

Bei der gerade durchgeführten DANTE-Frühjahrstagung in Wien wurde unter anderem das neue Wiki zur Überarbeitung der deutschsprachigen TeX-FAQ vorgestellt. Die Inhalte der bisherigen FAQ, die sich weiterhin auf dem Stand von September 2003 befindet, werden nun Schritt für Schritt in das Wiki überführt und dabei auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Alle Inhalte stehen dort nunmehr unter CC-by-nc-sa-Lizenz. Solange die Arbeiten noch nicht abgeschlossen sind, sollte man aber weiterhin auf die deutsche oder auf die von Robin Fairbairns gepflegte englische FAQ zurückgreifen (und verlinken). Die Überarbeitung der FAQ fällt zusammen mit einer generellen inhaltlichen und technischen Überarbeitung des DANTE-Webauftritts, die parallel hierzu in Angriff genommen worden ist. Der Unterschied zwischen dem alten und dem neuen Archiv zur DTK fällt doch recht deutlich zugunsten der überarbeiteten Fassung aus, die viel freundlicher daherkommt als das alte Layout.

Zur Monatswende wurde die DTK 1/2009 an die Mitglieder von DANTE versandt. Joachim Lammarsch würdigt darin den im Januar 2009 verstorbenen LaTeX-Pionier Helmut Kopka und blickt auf die Entwicklung von dessen bekannter Buchreihe „LaTeX“ zurück. Schwerpunkte dieser Ausgabe sind Beiträge über Fonts (deutsche Einheitskurzschrift, True-Type-Fonts für pdfTeX, Linux Libertine) und über größere Projekte: Uwe Zigenhagen beschreibt das „Konferenzmanagement mit LaTeX“ (Briefe, Rechnungen, Namensschilder), während Dominik Wagenführ seine Lösung zum Setzen des „Freien Magazins“ mit LaTeX vorstellt. Adelheid Grob beschreibt das Paket todonotes, und Gerd Neugebauer beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen Lösungen für die Darstellung des TeX-Logos in HTML.

Währenddessen gab die UK-TUG bekannt, daß sie ihre Zeitschrift „Baskerville“ nach einer längeren Pause wieder herausgeben wolle. Das Archiv der Zeitschrift auf CTAN endet im Jahre 1998.

Markus Kohm veröffentlicht bekanntlich Updates seines Bundles KOMA-Script nur noch auf BerliOS. Die CTAN-Maintainer übertragen die Dateien regelmäßig von dort in das TeX-Repository CTAN. Beim Updaten seiner anderen Pakete splitindex und marginnote wies Markus Kohm nun darauf hin, daß er auch diese Pakete nicht mehr selbst auf CTAN stellen werde. Das Paket splitindex wird auf Sarovar gehostet, während marginnote auf KOMA-Script.de bereitsteht. Wer mit diesen Paketen arbeitet, sollte also dort auf Updates achten. Die auf CTAN verfügbare Version wird voraussichtlich immer ein bißchen hinterherhinken.

In den „Notices of the American Mathematical Society“ ist ein weiterer Aufsatz zum derzeitigen Stand der Entwicklung von (La)TeX erschienen. Jim Hefferon und Karl Berry beschreiben dort in der Ausgabe von März 2009 „The TeX Family in 2009“. Der Beitrag, der von einer schönen Zeichnung von Duane Bibby auf dem Titelblatt der „Notices“ begleitet wird, steht unter dem Motto „TeX at 30: Going strong“ und stellt die Neuerungen der letzten Jahre im Überblick dar (vor allem bei pdfTeX, XeTeX und LuaTeX und bei den Schriften Latin Modern, TeX Gyre und STIX). Das neue Buch von Herbert Voß „Mathematiksatz mit LaTeX“ ist mittlerweile bei Lob.media erschienen.

Joseph Wright weist in seinem Blog auf das Paket silence von Paul Isambert hin, mit dem man steuern kann, welche Fehlermeldungen LaTeX beim Kompilieren ins Logfile schreibt. Das LaTeX3-Team diskutiere, welche Fehlermeldungen von LaTeX3 ausgegeben werden sollten. Jeder Anwender weiß, daß die Angaben im Logfile im Regelfall viel zu ausführlich ist. Anfängern fällt es sehr schwer, die vielen Warnungen, Status- und Fehlermeldungen auseinanderzuhalten und zu verstehen. Das meiste hiervon ist in der Regel vernachlässigbar.

Bernd Raichle erinnert an die „TeX Pearls“ der polnischen Anwendervereinigung GUST, die wieder zur bevorstehenden BachoTeX-Tagung gesucht werden. Wer also solche „Perlen“ entweder selbst geschrieben oder aber irgendwo gefunden haben sollte, möge sie bei der GUST einsenden.

Mehrere Programme, die ich bereits in diesem Blog vorgestellt habe, wurden upgedatet:

SimpleTeX4ht, das Frontend zu TeX4ht für Mac OS X, ist in Version 2.6 veröffentlicht worden. Die Konvertierung wird damit nun standardmäßig im Nonstop-Mode ausgeführt, damit werden die meisten Fehlermeldungen ignoriert.

Von dem OpenOffice.org-Konverter Writer2LaTeX wurde die Entwicklerversion 0.9.4 vorgestellt. Außerdem ist das Projekt nun offiziell auf Sourceforge umgezogen. Dadurch ändert sich auch die URL für den Auszug aus dem „Praxisbuch“ von Elke und Michael Niedermair mit der Anleitung zu w2l.

Auch der Editor TeXShop für Apple Macintosh wurde weiter entwickelt. Es gibt ihn nun in Version 2.25. Leider sind die Menüs auch in dieser Version noch nicht durchgehend eingedeutscht. Die Lokalisierung kann mit der sehr zügigen Entwicklung des Programms nicht Schritt halten. Bemerkenswert sind übrigens die umfangreichen Einführungen in LaTeX von George Grätzer und Richard Koch, die zusammen mit TeXShop verteilt werden, unter anderem Auszüge aus Grätzers Buch „More Math into LaTeX“. Sie sind über das Hilfe-Menü zugänglich.

Von dem Firefox-Plugin Zotero ist nun die Version 1.5 beta verfügbar. Ein Video demonstriert auf der neu gestalteten Homepage des Projekts die neuen Features.

LuaTeX beta 0.35.0 wurde Ende Februar 2009 freigegeben. Die Version 0.40.0 soll in TeX Live 2009 enthalten sein.

Und – last, but not least: Christian Schenk hat die MiKTeX Tools 2.8 beta 2 für GNU/Linux veröffentlicht. MiKTeX-pdfTeX wurde portiert.

Jueves 5 de marzo, sala Caravan, 21:30 horas…Rockola.fm vuelve con más música.

Es el turno de Baskerville, nombre tras el cual encontramos a tres chicos de Zaragoza: Pachi (batería), Maury (guitarra) y Ariadna (vocal). Una noche muy especial para ellos por ser la primera vez que tocan en Madrid. Y para una ocasión así, nada mejor que contar además con la compañía de Kireina, que participó con algunos de sus temas, y que, os recordamos, ya tuvo un concierto con nosotros (el pasado 5 de febrero).

La voz de Kireina abrió el concierto.

Para Baskerville era el primer concierto en Madrid.

Una vez más Rockola.fm apuesta por artistas aún por descubrir, proporcionándoles una plataforma de lanzamiento para su música en la red. Tenemos la suerte de trabajar en lo que nos gusta. Y sé que decir esto en tiempos tan difíciles como los que corren es casi descabellado. Con música, con artistas y sus éxitos. Los de antes, los de ahora y los que están por llegar.

Precisamente a estos últimos prestamos especial atención en Rockola.fm.  Hace ya algunos años que pusimos el oído en las canciones de un grupo que, desde Zaragoza, intentaban hacerse un hueco el panorama musical de nuestro país.

¿Qué quienes son? Tres músicos dispuestos a mostrar sus canciones bajo el nombre de BASKERVILLE. Pop optimista, fresco y vitalista. Y sobre todo… pop emprendedor. Gracias a su tesón, continúan con el mismo ahínco que el primer día o más si cabe.

Ariadna, Pachi y Mauri nos lo contaron en una entrevista. Nosotros os trasladamos parte de la misma en este vídeo.
