Jason Himmelstein will be presenting "ITPro’s taking the SharePoint 2013 Red Pill"

Session Abstract

With every new version of SharePoint come changes that either rock our world or make us scratch our heads and say "WHAT THE WHAT?!?"

If you are bold enough to want to adventure past the surface and are ready for the good, the bad, the great & the somewhat scary, join us as we deep dive into the rabbit hole of ITPro changes that are coming with SharePoint 2013.

Come on this journey as we:

explore changes to the service applications (including search)

what is new for visual upgrade

how SQL 2012 changes the storage scenario

take a look at the maturity of the Office Web Apps

examine how the new App Model will impact us

discuss the new workflow model

discuss what the "Claims First" model is going to do to our world.

By the end of this session you should be as excited for SharePoint 2013, but as to keep in mind twisted take on what Morpheus said: "Unfortunately, no one can just be told what the SharePoint 2013 is. You have to see it for yourself."

K2 tools are built on Microsoft technology and because K2 users actually complete work in the Microsoft programs they already know — like SharePoint and Visual Studio — little training is required and user buy-in is quick.
PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Christian Buckley, a SharePoint MVP and Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler. He will be presenting "Building End User Productivity into your SharePoint Planning".

Session Abstract
SharePoint Myth #1 is that out of the box will give you everything your teams need to be productive. SharePoint Myth #2 is that you need to customize to make your teams productive. But how can this be? While these things may sound mutually exclusive, the real problem is your approach to solving your business problems. Far too many SharePoint plans begin with a specific outcome in mind (deploy SharePoint) rather than a clear picture of the business problems to be solved. When you understand the business problems, you can begin to plan out your solutions. This session will outline some of the leading productivity solutions in SharePoint 2010 (with a peek into 2013) and cover some planning best practices to help your team get more out of SharePoint – more quickly.

About Christian
Christian Buckley is Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler, where he drives partner and community development. Christian previously worked at Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager on the enterprise hosted SharePoint platform team (now part of BPOS), and also managed an engineering team in advertising operations. Prior to Microsoft, Christian was managing director of a regional consulting firm in the San Francisco East Bay, participated in several startups, and worked with IBM, HP, Cisco, Matsushita, Solectron, Seagate and other large hi-tech and manufacturing firms to deploy collaboration and supply chain solutions. He is co-author of three books on IBM Rational Software configuration management and defect tracking solutions, and can be found online at www.buckleyplanet.net and www.twitter.com/buckleyplanet

Please note the date change for this month’s meeting!!

December 12th, 2011 Meeting Information – Cambridge

PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Richard Harbridge, Senior SharePoint Evangelist for Allin Consulting. He will be presenting "Is Your SharePoint Really Healthy? What’s The Right Prescription?"

Session Abstract
In many organizations SharePoint is a critical enterprise platform. As an organization matures the platform must mature and grow along with it to ensure it can continue to meet/exceed the needs of the business. If the SharePoint implementation is unhealthy or has problems these will compound overtime and may lead to solution, project and potentially even platform failure. This talk is about how to ensure that never happens.

What we will discuss in this session:

A “SharePoint Health Check” which help will identify how “Healthy” your SharePoint Implementation is in the following areas:

SharePoint Infrastructure

SharePoint Performance

SharePoint Security

SharePoint Integration

SharePoint Search

SharePoint Taxonomy

SharePoint Governance

SharePoint User Adoption

SharePoint Usability

SharePoint Development

A “SharePoint Prescription” You will learn about many SharePoint Best Practices that can help make your SharePoint environment healthier based on the above mentioned areas.

About Richard
Richard Harbridge is an internationally recognized expert in Microsoft SharePoint and is a technology and business evangelist with deep expertise in information architecture, enterprise content management, and technology strategy. He has defined, architected, developed and successfully implemented well over a hundred SharePoint solutions from small implementations on a single server to over 80,000+ user implementations in international organizations.

As a sought-after speaker he often shares his insights, experiences, and advice around collaboration, knowledge management, social computing, ROI, governance, user adoption and training at many industry events.

Richard hopes to see you/speak with you at the Boston Area SharePoint User Group as it’s an amazing community where many people exchange and share experience, knowledge, and relationships to help us all become even better at our jobs and the things we are passionate about.

MEETING SPONSOR – Certeon
Certeon is the Application Performance Company. aCelera, our suite of software WAN optimization products delivers fast and secure data transfer for any user accessing any application, on any device, across any network.

As enterprises aim to make their IT infrastructure flexible for business agility, contain IT costs and deal with regulatory changes, they are adopting a number of initiatives:

Centralization of servers to data centers

Consolidation of hardware using virtualization

Reduction in the number of data centers

Increasing globalization with more telecommuters, road warriors and other remote workers

Transition to network based backup and disaster recovery network replication

Leveraging public cloud services

The IT infrastructure is going through an evolution and the Wide Area Network (WAN) is now the backbone of both private and public cloud services. Each of the initiatives listed above further drives more and more remote access to data. If nothing is done, user productivity drops as WAN links are clogged and costs go up as IT tries to increase WAN links as consumption rises.

In this new world WAN optimization is not an option but a necessity. At Certeon we believe WAN optimization should not be considered as a point solution to solve pain at a couple of remote sites; instead it should be thought of a strategic initiative for the entire infrastructure. When deployed across the board at all points of access, CIOs and IT administrators will no longer have to worry where the data and where the user are. Data will be available instantly at LAN like speeds anywhere in the world.

Our mission is to deliver best of breed WAN optimization and application acceleration technology at a cost that is value based such that enterprises and cloud providers can afford to deploy it at every point of access in the network. No longer should you have to worry about the network or where the data is located, you should have instant access to it no matter where you are. Our software is scalable to be installed in the largest enterprise or a cloud provider’s infrastructure.

Only a software solution can deliver the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that CIOs are searching for. Some examples of how costs can be saved from software versus hardware based solution include remote installation to anywhere in the world, leveraging commodity hardware and corporate standards for sparing and maintenance, and maximizing consolidation initiatives like virtualization to reduce cooling, power and rack space costs.

SUSTENANCE
Food and beverages will be provided at the event.

SPTechCon was my first SharePoint conference back when I attended the San Francisco 2010 edition. That doesn’t seem so long ago, yet it really is in SharePoint time. (They say you’ll never forget your first girl, but in this case it’s my first conference, so… Yeah, if I have to explain it, it’s a stretch.)

SPTechCon was where I first really got how powerful and useful the SharePoint community is. It was when I realized that it would be cool to find a place for myself within it.

I’ve read a couple of write ups about the conference which I liked, so I figured I’d give pointers to them here. Ruven Gotz’s (@ruveng) post SPTechCon: Sing(apore) for your supper and Josh McCarty’s (@josh_a_mccarty) post Thoughts on SPTechCon Boston 2011 captured the conference well (and Josh’s not just because he talked about me!), plus a bit of what they enjoyed while they were here in Boston. If you’re interested in other slants on the conference and extracurricular activities, give them a read.

I was once again honored to be able to speak at this edition of SPTechCon, right here in my home town of Boston. Not only was I able to do a technical session, but David Rubinstein (@drubinstein), tsar of the conference, invited me to do a Lightning Talk on Wednesday night. You get 4 minutes for those darn things, so I decided to simply do a “promo” for my session on Friday.

Thursday night, I also had the honor of being on the BASPUG “Ask the Experts” panel, sitting next to none other than Christian “Flying Monkey” Finn. Also on the panel were Michael Noel, Laura Rogers, Todd Klindt, Randy Drisgill, and Jeremy Thake. (I’m forgetting someone…)

My session was entitled “Developing in SharePoint’s Middle Tier“ (it’s session 607) and I demoed some generalized solutions from past project work. Since I had the slides from the Lightning Talks, I figured I’d clean them up a little and use them as an intro for the session. I’ve posted solution files (WSPs) for SharePoint 2010 to my Sympraxis Consulting Demos site (upper right of the page) which contain the two main demos I showed. There’s also a SharePoint 2007 version (MiddleTier2007) of the custom navigation demo, if that’s more useful to you. (It’s an earlier version, but not too far off from what I showed.)

“Customized Navigation”

“Budget”

Finally, and not to be too mercantile about it, if you are interested in learning more about these development techniques, consider taking my classes at the USPJ Academy. I have three courses which cover SharePoint’s Middle Tier:

Data View Web Part Basics

Enhancing the User Experience with jQuery

Introduction to the SharePoint Web Services

These three courses cover much of what I showed in the demos and more. You can see more details on the courses on the Academy Course Listing page. Come join us!

PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Carlos Valcarcel, FAST Technical Specialist at Microsoft. He will be presenting "Architecture: Fast Search Server 2010 for SharePoint".

SESSION ABSTRACT
With the new release of SharePoint comes a plethora of new features: linear scalability, support for more languages, better relevancy, and support for 100 million documents in total per farm just to name a few. Yet, Microsoft’s acquisition of Fast Search and Transfer in 2007 has changed where SharePoint enterprise search is going. After a brief overview of SharePoint 2010 we will look at Fast Search Server 2010, what its feature set looks like and the reasons for using it over SharePoint search.

About Carlos
Carlos has been in software development since the mid-80′s working in financial services, insurance and technology. He has worked with C, C++, Java, J2EE, Spring, Eclipse and Python in various locations around the United States and Australia. During his time as an independent consultant he presented sessions on software development and distributed system architecture in the US, UK, Germany and France. In 2004 Sams Publishing published his first book, Eclipse Kick Start (for Eclipse version 3.0).

He has been with FAST, A Microsoft Subsidiary, since March of 2007 in a pre-sales technical role.

I did a session at the Boston Area SharePoint User’s Group (BASPUG) on 8 December called "Developing in SharePoint’s Middle Tier". Thanks to all who attended! I enjoyed the conversation during the session (I like discussing more than presenting) and one of the things I said that I would do is make the demo site I used available to anyone who’d like to look at it.

I saved the SharePoint 2010 site as a Site Template, and it’s available for download from my Sympraxis Consulting demo site.

Feel free to download the template and play around with it. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to add them as comments to this post.

PRESENTER
Our presenter for our next meeting is Scott Jamison, Managing Partner at Jornata. He will be presenting "SharePoint 2010 Usage and Adoption Best Practices".

SESSION ABSTRACT
This session will cover best practices for usage and adoption of SharePoint 2010. We’ll answer questions for both the SharePoint adoption team and users alike….

For the adoption team:

• How can I get my employees excited about using this new collaboration technology (champions, incentives)?
• How do I make sure all the employees in my organization understand and feel comfortable using SharePoint?
• How can I make sure that SharePoint fits into existing business processes, and makes people’s jobs easier?
• How do I manage the behavioral change required to integrate SharePoint into the way people work?

For users:

• What collaboration methods and site templates are most appropriate for which types of situations?
• What should I ask myself before setting up a SharePoint site?
• How should I manage content?
• What should I think about when tagging?
• Etiquette for social interactions?

PRESENTER

Our presenter for our next meeting Is Marc Anderson, President and Founder of Sympraxis Consulting. He will be presenting "Developing in SharePoint’s Middle Tier".

SESSION ABSTRACT

While most of the market focus in SharePoint development lies with .NET skills and techniques, there is a rich middle ground which has been rapidly gathering a following. Developing in the Middle Tier with SharePoint Designer, Data View Web Parts (DVWPs), jQuery, and the SharePoint Web Services using SPServices, you can build rich solutions with no risk of deploying managed code to your SharePoint servers.

In this session, Marc will show examples of Middle Tier development techniques and answer your questions about when Middle Tier development may prove to be a highly viable alternative to traditional .NET development.

About Marc

Marc is the Co-Founder and President of Sympraxis Consulting LLC, located in the Boston suburb of Newton, Mass. He has more than 25 years of experience in technology, professional services, and software development. Marc is the developer of the jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services (aka SPServices) and a faculty member at the USPJ Academy focused on Middle Tier Development with SharePoint.
Registration is now open for the November 10th, 2010 meeting of the Boston Area SharePoint Users Group, back again on our home turf at the Microsoft NERD center in Cambridge, MA.

PRESENTERS

Our presenters for our next meeting are Richard Harbridge, a Senior SharePoint Evangelist at Allin Consulting, and Mark Bramhall, CTO at Allin Consulting. They will be presenting "SharePoint 2010 Integration and Interoperability: What you need to know".

Session Abstract

There are countless challenges when dealing with business data. A few of note are:

Higher Overhead for IT to Service User Requests

Multiple Places to Search Results in Reduced Applicable Contexts

Multiple Places to Administer, Manage, and Maintain

High Data Integration Costs (100% Custom and Often One Offs)

Silos or Islands of Business Data Lead to Redundant Data or Processes

Multiple Interfaces Creates User Dissatisfaction and Increased Training Costs

Microsoft SharePoint is a platform than can help significantly reduce the challenges mentioned above by using an interoperable platform of connected services. In our session we will explore SharePoint’s new Interoperability underpinnings as well as the BCS to determine how they can be leveraged effectively in real world scenarios.

What we will be talking about:

SharePoint’s Important Interoperability

What is the BCS?

External Content Types

External Columns

External Lists

Extensibility and Tooling

Other Ways SharePoint Leverages the BCS

Demonstration of BCS

The Limitations of BCS

I know, I know… I still need to publish my post on this past SharePoint Saturday Boston… however, since SPTechCon is slightly more fresh in my mind, and, because I promised materials to one of the lucky folks who attended my sessions by the end of the day, SPTechCon has taken the driver’s seat.

All I can say is what a great conference! Unfortunately, I was meeting people and companies, and talking to session-goers, catching up with friends, and meeting new ones, for the entire event, that the only sessions I was able to make it to, were my own!

I would first like to extend my thanks, yet again, to David Rubinstein, Stacy Burris, Kathy Bruin, and the rest of the BZ Media team, for not only taking me on as a speaker, but, for also graciously hosting the October meeting of the Boston Area SharePoint Users Group! With the conference in town, and by David’s suggestion months earlier, we managed to put together a fantastic panel of speakers from some of the SharePoint rock stars that were on hand at SPTechCon. We wanted to put together a focused panel on the new hotness, SharePoint 2010. While the conversations drifted a bit, we had a very energetic crowd, and very energetic panel. The free drinks at the attendee exhibit hall exception MAY have had something to do with that…

The panel consisted of none other than Bill English of Mindsharp, Andrew Connell of Critical Path Training, Joel Oleson of Quest, Heather Solomon of SharePoint Experts, Dux Raymond Sy of Innovative-e, and Mark Miller of EndUserSharePoint.com. (I’ll get the video posted soon enough!).

My next set of thanks is going to the BASPUG attendees and speakers – thank you all so much for making yet another highly successful meeting of the BASPUG! We had over 70 in attendance, and there was barely a seat available! To each and every one of our speakers, you are always welcome back in Boston to the users group!

Some of the comments from the BASPUG I’d like to share.. a few images below – LOTS of talk about the #BASPUG. Thank you all!

We will have Asif Rehmani, a SharePoint Trainer, MVP, and Consultant, will be presenting "Creating Workflows with SharePoint Designer 2010, InfoPath and Visio".

Session Abstract
Forms and Workflows are important for automating business processes. Companies usually rely on programmers to create the forms and workflows using code. Not anymore! With InfoPath 2010 and SharePoint Designer 2010, you can create powerful data driven form composite solutions on your SharePoint sites. InfoPath gives you the ability to pull data from databases and lists, and create forms with data validation and conditional formatting. SharePoint Designer’s workflows let you then design powerful multi-step workflows centered around the form collected data, building upon the out-of-the-box reusable workflows and even import workflow designs from Visio! In this presentation, you will see how these tools come together to design workflows and route forms across your organization for task assignment and approval.

About Asif
Asif has been training and consulting on primarily SharePoint technologies since 2004. He is a SharePoint Server MVP and MCT.
I mentioned yesterday about the Boston Area SharePoint Users Group that we are putting together, however, I wanted to fully dedicate a blog post to it, and use this as a placeholder until we have the actual website up and running, so, if you came to http://www.bostonsharepointug.org, then you probably got directed to this post. Welcome!

The Boston Area SharePoint Users Group was founded by Geoff Varosky of Grace-Hunt, Ryan Tacy of AvePoint, Eugene Rosenfeld of Black Blade Associates, and Talbott Crowell of ThirdM. We wanted to bring together like minds to network and share their experiences, triumphs, and tribulations around Microsoft SharePoint. To provide a community platform for Boston area SharePoint users, administrators, developers, architects, to share their knowledge with the community. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center in Cambridge, MA.

We are currently in the process of developing the real website, so, stay tuned here for more information, as well as @BASPUG on twitter, for more up to date information regarding the Users Group.

INAUGURAL MEETING
We will be holding our first meeting on May 12th, 2010, from 6pm – 8pm EST at the Microsoft New England Research & Development (NERD) Center. Our speaker will be Chris Bortlik of Microsoft, presenting “Introducing SharePoint 2010”. Our first meeting will also coincide with the official launch of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Watch the live launch event during the day, and come and see SharePoint 2010 in action at night!

A little bit about Chris…
Chris Bortlik works at Microsoft as a SharePoint technology specialist. He works with Enterprise customers and partners in the Northeast in a pre-sales technical role. Chris speaks frequently at Microsoft events (including the SharePoint Conference) and is a contributing author of the upcoming "Essential SharePoint 2010" book. He also publishes a blog on TechNet at: http://blogs.technet.com/cbortlik/ Prior to joining Microsoft in 2008, Chris was a customer for 14 years working in technical IT architect, development and management roles – primarily leading .NET and SharePoint related projects.

SUSTENANCE
Food for our inaugural meeting, as well as the first few meetings, will be sponsored by AvePoint. The meetings will also not stop to a dead halt at 8pm, that is just when we need to be out of the facility. After the user group meetings, we will most likely announce and adjourn to a local watering hole, to continue on our discussions and networking, which may or may not be sponsored.

RAFFLE PRIZES
We will be handing out raffle tickets at the BASPUG meetings (when we have items to raffle that is!). Black Blade Associates will be raffling off a license, valued at $2000 for their SharePoint Zip product, at each and every meeting of the BASPUG!

We will also be working with some publishers as well to extend discounts, be able to raffle off free books, and more, to the members of the BASPUG.

FREQUENCY
The BASPUG will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, from 6pm to 8pm EST, starting May 12th, 2010.

LOCATION
We will be meeting at the Microsoft New England Research & Development (NERD) Center, located in Cambridge, MA.
