La Capitale lancia la sua ultima battaglia per la vivibilità dei quartieri periferici. Lotta al degrado delle periferie? Un piano per il ricovero degli immigrati senzatetto? Una campagna anti prostituzione? Macché, il Comune di Roma non ce l’ha con le lucciole, bensì con le zanzare. E per combatterle ha scoperto nuovi alleati. Contro le zanzare, a Corvia­le, arrivano i pipistrelli. L’idea è dell’Ater, l’istituto che in città gestisce migliaia di case popolari. Nel quartiere di Corviale ha installato 25 «Bat-box», letteralmente: scatole per pipistrelli.

Si tratta di «casette» per i chirotteri così utili alla lotta contro le zanzare: ogni piccolo mammifero può cibarsi di duemila insetti per notte e quindi essere un regolatore naturale contro l’invadenza dell’anofele. Le Bat-box sono state installate sugli alberi nei pressi degli edifici gestiti da Ater. «La nostra Amministrazione, man­tenendo fede alle promesse fatte agli inquilini, lancia un segnale importante sulla stra­da del rispetto e della tutela ambientale con l’in­stallazione, presso gli stabili di Corviale, delle Bat-box, stru­mento estremamente efficace e biologico di lotta alle zanzare», spiega Luca Petrucci, presidente dell’Ater del Comune di Roma.

Le casette sono state instal­late dal Consorzio na­zionale servizi (Cns) che si occupa dei servizi di pulizia e igiene am­bientale per conto dell’Azien­da. «L’Ater – prosegue Pe­trucci – ha sposato un proget­to del Museo di Storia natura­le dell’Universitá di Firenze, che si basa appunto sull’instal­lazione, su alberi o stabili, del­le Bat-box, casette di legno utilizzate per offrire rifugio ai pipistrelli, i quali sono degli eccezionali predatori di zanza­re». Corviale ospita il primo esperimento del genere sul territorio del Lazio, mentre al­tre regioni italiane, tra le quali Toscana, Trentino Alto Adige, Piemonte, Emilia Romagna, Marche e Liguria hanno giá aderito all’iniziativa.

«E’ intenzione dell’Azienda – ha concluso il presidente dell’Ater – coinvol­gere nell’iniziativa, dopo l’esperimen­to-pilota di Corviale, via via tutti gli stabili che insistono sulle no­stre proprietá, compa­tibilmente con le ca­ratteristiche struttura­li del territorio, per­chè crediamo ferma­mente in questo pro­getto che permette di conciliare le esigenze degli utenti con la tu­tela e il rispetto dell’ ambiente. Mi preme sottolineare che l’in­stallazione delle cas­sette, avvenuta in questi gior­ni, dará principio all’insedia­mento dei pipistrelli che, di conseguenza, inizieranno ad avere efficacia nei prossimi mesi e, più concretamente, a partire dal prossimo anno». E per tutte le altre periferie tormentate dalle zanzare? In attesa che il Campidoglio si decida a fare qualcosa di più delle periodiche disinfestazi0ni, un sito internet racconta come costruire da sé la bat-box a casa.

Altrimenti fate una gita al supermercato, ma in Toscana: in quella regione, infatti, da oltre un anno sono in vendita bat-box prefabbricate. Sugli scaffali di una grande catena di ipermercati ci sono bat-box in legno multistrato di betulla, senza collanti e coloranti nocivi, inodori, di circa 35 centimetri di larghezza per 60 d’altezza e solo 5 centimetri di spessore.
Sono state progettate dal gruppo di ricercatori del Museo di Storia Naturale, Sezione di Zoologia «La Specola» dell’Università di Firenze, in base alle esperienze acquisite sulle specie di pipistrelli italiani. E hanno dato buoni risultati nelle sperimentazioni effettuate già da alcuni anni in vari Comuni della Toscana. Importante la localizzazione delle bat-box: i pipistrelli le utilizzeranno come rifugio se saranno ben collocate e facilmente individuabili. Meglio montarle su una parete esterna di casa, a circa 4 metri d’altezza dal suolo, magari vicino alla vegetazione; oppure sul tronco di un albero.

Day 4

Team Alpha were sent out on a Survey Mission of the nearby heathland by Steve “The Big Cheese” Davis. During the mission, we encountered many local allies, such as the slow worm and Grass snake. Much of the day was spent re-cooperating, drinking copious amounts of tea and eating cooperative sandwiches.

Day 5

The final mission of the week and tragically Adam “Maxeyman” last day before moving back to his civilian life. Team Alpha were sent to Kingcombe to build benches. The team were split, causing the Committee to be divided. This caused lots of problems for one of the groups resulting in many attempts to build one bench, while the other steamrolled over and built three. After, for their help the Team were given food of tea and cake. Where Matt “Hammer” collected many of the flapjacks for later sustenance.

A bunch of volunteers and DWT staff descended on Ashley wood today – in search of bats….

We did find some bats – but what sort? and what else did we find?  Read on to find out!

The aim of the days was to work our way through the many bat boxes at the DWT Ashley Wood Reserve, identifying and counting any bats that we might find.  In addition, it’s a good time to clear out all the old birds nests from this spring.

It’s always surprising to see how resourceful some of the tit species can be – and despite the difficulty they must have in getting through the hole at the bottom of the box and then having to clamber up inside, some of the boxes were almost full to the brim with masses of moss and feathers.

We got off to a great start, with 10 pipistrelles in only the second box that we checked!  Not wanting to disturb them too much, it was simply a matter of formally identifying them, confirming the count, and then leaving them alone to continue their sleepy ways…  This bunch were soprano pipestrelles, slightly different to common pips in that they don’t have the darker mask, and they have a ’stubby’ nose.

With the temperatures starting to drop away now, the bats are starting to go into torpor -dropping their body temperature and metabolism so that they don’t burn too much fat.  It won’t be long now before they head off to their winter sites and go into hibernation proper until next spring.  Imagine being able to sleep right through the winter – what a fantastic idea!!!

Having safely put the front back on to the bat box, James had the seemingly simple task of moving the ladder away form the tree and on to the next batch of boxes.  I say ’seemingly simple’, because James managed to make it look like one of the hardest things ever, on the planet!  Still, he got there in the end and we continued our search for more bats.

A few more boxes with old nests later, our next box turned out to have something a little bit scary inside…  Jane had volunteered to check this box, but decided that it was perhaps a wise move not to do so, with a steady flow of hornets going in and out!  We found 3 boxes in total of hornets, and all were surprisingly active considering the early frost that we had in the morning.

We carried on around the wood, checking boxes as we went.  Several more had soprano pipistrelles and then before we knew it, we were in the final clearing where we had the last 8 boxes to check.  Amanda volunteered to check the first four, and proceeded to prove she can be just as handy with a ladder as James!  Eventually she got it up though, and started checking the boxes.

 The first 2 had birds nests, the 3rd had a huge hole made by a squirrel and no bats.  The final box though held 8 bats -and they were different!

Amanda clambered down the ladder and we confirmed what she had announced earlier from her lofty site at the top of the ladder – we had found some Brown Long-eared bats.

This was our first – the only bat species to have been previously recorded at the wood were pips, so our discovery of 8 long-eareds was a great find.  It was the perfect end to our morning of box checks – and time for a well earned cup of tea!

Aunque parezca mentira el mundo de la música en alguna ocasión nos suele dar alguna sorpresa, como es el caso del nuevo disco de Miss Kittin, “BATBOX”.

Últimamente no paraba de encontrar discos de música electronica que sonaban siempre a lo mismo, que no paran de repetir una y otra vez la misma formula, “BATBOX” aún siendo fiel al espíritu de Kittin nos hace rememorar los momentos más loables de este estilo músical, con canciones desenfadadas y llenas de ritmo.

Alejada de los empeños artisticos de otras “divas ” del movimiento como “BJÖRK”, la DJ vuelve a repetir espíritu creativo del mismo modo que hizo en “I COM”, dejando por un momento su lado de pinchadiscos y creando melodias cantadas que recuerdan a sus colaboraciones con grupos de la talla de “CHIKS ON SPEED”.

Gracias a esto podemos volver a disfrutar de ella como solista, en definitiva que si quereis disfrutar de un rato sin preocupaciones ni exigencias transcendentales compraros el cd.

La nota negativa viene por su concierto en Barcelona en la sala “RAZZMATAZZ” que acabó anulando no se sabe porque motivo, la verdad parece que la única vez que podemos disfrutar de esta chica sin que sea una sesión de “SONAR” o en de “LOFT”, y escucharla en su estado más personal, va y se nos escapa, no se no se…
