Do you ever feel like a blank sheet of paper? Not in that hopeful-new-page kind of way, but in an empty-crumpled-lump-of-moist-cellulose-pulp kind. And you just lay around feeling like you’re so useless that you can’t even perform your basic functions properly; like you’re not even worth performing them.

You seclude yourself and hide away under the piles of mess which lay lifeless in your room, hoping that if you sit still for long enough you’ll just deteriorate into an invisible pile of nothingness and no one will ask questions or tell you off for being useless or even think about you in the first place. You’ll be able to just fade away and blend into the non-existent.

You pace to and fro, frantically. Unable to sleep, unable to think, even. For your mind has transfigured itself into a gargantuan bath filled with murky waters which spill onto your thoughts making them harder to decipher. You’re on edge all the time, the tiniest of remarks sends you into a spiraling fit of rage and anyone in your midst gets hit with words so cold, so brazen that, in the aftermath, even leave you shocked and speechless.

Like an old paper, you lay around, browning at the edges. Crumpled and paralyzed by all these invisible forces so much bigger than yourself which just keep weighing you down. But all the others see is tiredness, you always just look tired. You’re a paper, you’re strong, you can take it. You can’t.

You’re just stuck in this weird place between two strong like poles and their energy just keeps pushing against each other, squashing you. Your thoughts make no sense, so you just ramble on and on unable to see that you’ve been going around in circles for ages. Alone.

I remember this being my favorite toy for bath time. My dad made it, actually. He was in the Coast Guard for quite a few years, and if I’m remembering correctly, this is a replica of the ship he spent a lot of his time on. It was only my brother and me at the time. Once my sisters came along, I just claimed this as my own. They had their own toys, and I think I’d get upset when they messed with my boat. They were always breaking… well, everything. Someone was always running it into the side of the tub and at one point, my dad had to touch up the paint.

Eventually, everyone reached the age of showers and our bath toys remained under the sink collecting dust. Once I found out that my mom was going to move out of the house, I made sure to rescue my boat before she could get her hands on it. I stored it safely with my other treasures and it’s moved from apartment to apartment with me over the years.

I did start to feel guilty that it was just sitting in a box. But I finally found a home where I felt comfortable displaying the belongings that are closest to my heart. So, this little jewel now has a lovely view of me in the shower.

Who here hasn’t, dear readers, after a long day at the office selling prescription books to the plebeian classes or passive aggressively torturing our secretary with sexual innuendoes in the vain hope that they will eventually succumb and we can finally have our wicked way with them in the pharmaceutical cupboard, wish nothing more after been chauffeured home through the rush hour traffic to take a nice relaxing bath.
The anticipation to soak away the stresses and strains of the day, as our man servant runs our bath, is one of life’s more exquisite pleasures; patiently waiting, brandy in hand, as we threaten the old fool with a damn good thrashing if he does not hurry up is a joy we can all share.
Finally the brandy consumed , the bath complete; we can disrobe and slide our pink, naked flesh into the warm beckoning waters. As we lay, prostrate and calm, our muscles unwind there tensions and our minds can drift. But as we reach the plateau of near nirvana, resisting the thoughts of self flagellation, a vile monster awakens with terrible ambitions of destroying our bliss. For, in this state of moderation, the light lunch of foie gras, quails eggs and four glasses of a particularly fine vintage Newcastle brown have conspired to create within our being a heady mix of digestive gasses which our relaxed stomach muscle can no longer contain. As this miasma emanates from our loosened buttocks we would expect, what with the afore mentioned lunch, to experience a slight unpleasant aroma. But what has risen forth is a bouquet of our nether regions so toxic that a thousand aroma therapy candles could never hope to contain. What we have created is the nefarious Carbondibackside.
And here dear friends let me, with the aid of my dear mistress science, explain to you how this foul beast comes into existence.
It is a common misapprehension that the gases which on occasion leak from the human body, usually at awkward social occasions, are concocted wholly of methane. This is quite, quite wrong. The actual combination of an arse cocktail varies from person to person and are composed of four main ingredients, these being oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. How these blasted things work their way into our digestive track is a different story for a different time, but rest assured that they are there. The main culprit we want to be examining for belching into existence the dreaded carbondibackside is hydrogen sulphide. This molecule on its own is a whiffy little bugger at the best of times, but released into a nice warm bath it becomes a tenacious hunter. You see in its raw form that the human body produces it in, it is highly unstable, been as it is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one of sulphur, it quickly breaks down after a brief assault on our nasal passages. But when given the opportunity to react with water, which we all know to be comprised of two hydrogen atoms and one of oxygen, it will balance itself by devouring the water molecule of its oxygen atom; thus balanced it has transformed itself from an unstable state into the more stable and vigorous carbondibackside.
When this particular element was first discovered back in the 1890′s, there was not much commercial demand, for although it was realised to have great explosive properties, the stench given off when burned was deemed too outweigh the benefits and after some failed experimental steam powered locomotives where quickly decommissioned, it was largely forgotten. The next time this reprehensible rouge of the periodic table appears in the pages of history is in the brief but brutal uprising on the Dutch colony of Suriname. In late august of 1932 the native peoples of Suriname became disenfranchised with their Dutch overlords, wanting the right to self govern and be free from tyranny. Remodeling Surprises Happen to Us, Too...

With plenty of experience in all aspects of exterior and interior remodeling, we have always taken on our own projects, from just a little drywall and paint to extensive: mud-jacking a home, sledge-hammering through concrete for plumbing (you get the idea). We are our own weekend warriors when there is time. This weekend we decided to tackle–just the window mind you–of our own upstairs bath, to finally rid our home of the glass block, which we personally find unattractive and dated.

Come on now, this is no big deal! We’ve installed literally thousands of windows. A no brainer. We’ve had the new window stored in the sub-basement for over a month, it’s time!

Hah.

The exterior wall is completely rotten…completely. So now the project grows…

Oh, and the floor where the tub was, you ask?

We can see through to the laundry room below now – what a cool feature right? Our project grows again.

My husband Rob, the brawn (and brains) behind our company, perseveres as always, and I have learned through years and years of experience to not freak out anymore. Rob has it handled, every time. I love him so…

Fear not, we shall conquer as we always do. A few head scratches, a couple curse words, and we’re off to the races!

Practicing Safe Storage (How to Caulk a Bath Tub)

Caulking a tub surround is one the easiest, cheapest, and most important projects in a bathroom; however, it can seem very daunting to do a perfect job if you have never done it before. Caulk prevents water from penetrating the crevices between the tub and the wall board.

There are two options in bathroom caulk: Silicon or Acrylic latex

Silicon Pros:

-longer lasting

-dries soft and flexible

-dries quickly

-moisture retardant

Silicon Cons:

-dries very quickly (also a con because it can be harder to fix mistakes)

-only comes in the basic colors: clear, white, and almond

-cleans up with mineral spirits

-Strong smell until it cures

Acrylic Latex Pros:

-Easy to work with and fix mistakes

-cleans up with soap and water

-Less smelly

-Many color options

Acrylic Latax Cons:

-Dries harder than silicon and is not as flexible which can lead to cracks

-Does not last as long as silicon

-Not a moisture retardant; however, that doesn’t mean it is not effective in creating a good seal

No matter what option you choose, make sure it is very high quality and has an additive to inhibit mold and mildew growth.

I chose to use white silicon myself.

Great Tips I Have Tried or Read About:

Remove every bit of the caulk with a caulk remover tool, a razor blade, can opener, or putty knife. Be extra careful that you do not scratch the tub or tile.

Meticulous clean the location making sure it is free of all old, loose, dried and dirty caulk. Everything must be removed or the new job will not last long. After you THINK it is clean, use denatured alcohol and a non-abrasive pad to further clean and prep the area. Trust.

Fill the tub full of water. Strange, but important. The tub will be under a lot of weight when it is full of water (and a person) and it will stretch a bit. You want the caulk to be applied when it is stretched otherwise it can pull away when you decide to take the first bath.

If you don’t have experience with a caulk gun or a steady hand, use painters tape on either side of the bead (the wall and on the tub) to get a nice clean edge. Apply the caulk, smooth, then remove the tape. I skipped this part, but it is definitely a good idea if you are concerned. Just remember to work quickly and remove the tape while the caulk is still wet. Once the tape is removed you will have to quickly and gently run a finger of the caulk again to re-smooth the tape edges.

Even the ultimate home improvement guru, Tom Silva, uses tape.

If you use silicon caulk, have a spray bottle filled with denatured alcohol ready. Lightly spray the bead of caulk before smoothing to help make it easier. If you are using latex, water has the same effect. I did not try this, but it sounds like a great idea.

Have lots of clean cloths around to wipe your fingers on and for cleanup

Apply the caulk in a single continuous sweep. Do one wall at a time. Smooth the bead with our finger or caulk tool (I prefer a finger). Remove the tape. Move on to the next side and repeat.

Cut only a small opening at the tip of the caulk tube. It should be 1/8 to 3/16in or less (i.e. smaller than you think). VERY important. You will have to do an assload of cleanup if you cut the opening too wide. Also, the tip should be cut at a 45 degree angle.

Heed the manufacturer instructions for drying times before showering/bathing.

Keep the new caulk clean. A build-up of soap scum can lead to mold and mildew growth. Make sure to use compatible cleaning agents as directed. Some cleaners will actually increase mold growth in caulk.

If you aren’t quite ready to replace your caulk but it is gross with mold then look into cleaning the grout with this guys tips. The pictures are amazing. If our caulk wasn’t in such bad shape I would have tried it.
When you are done replace the cap and properly store the caulk for future use per the manufacturer’s instructions. Mine did not come with a cap (most don’t). I had several tubes half used at the house and I happen to find these for $2 at Menards…

They had all different types of hot springs, they had a lotion one, a blueberry one and a Chinese bath salt one it was crazy. I know my Dad would of loved this place it was very relaxing and you could just sit and enjoy hot water and they had outside ones and inside ones too, it was really cool place at night. My Dad probably would’ve been there all night, I remember he loved the hot tub we had at our Cabin in Mission Ridge that we used to have. Everyone had a great time there and we all decided that we for sure want to come back and do it again.
