This is why stalking is badd!!!!

Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) writes and directs this odd, claustrophobic neo-noir film about a seedy young Brit (Jeremy Theobald) who’s obsessed with following people — albeit harmlessly at first. After meeting a like-minded bloke (Alex Haw), the twosome graduate to breaking and entering — but meet their match in a tough blonde dame (Lucy Russell) who may have dubious plans of her own.

This is Nolan’s directorial debut, and basically he uses in this film what he has always used, and that is the non-linear plot structure. This is a device that he would later use in films Memento, and Batman Begins.

I think that this device is really used well here cause it reflects the uncerntainty I had about these characters and if they were good, and if they were bad. Random scenes pop up out of nowhere at some points, and you don’t know where they came from, but as the film goes on you see how each and every scene all come together at the end.

However, I think that this film was in ways a lot like Memento. Overall I thought Memento was more polished and seemed better thought out than Following, Christopher Nolan even said that he thought Following was flawed and Memento was the far superior film.

Also, by the end of the film I never really understood what this blonde dame did with her life and how she came into the story to begin with. Yeah, we know she’s being framed, but for what, and why? All so many confusing questions that I feel were never answered.

The acting from this unknown cast is actually quite good. The best out of the cast I think was Alex Haw, who played Bloke. He starts out as a very cool and mellow guy with a set of plans on how to rob, but then by the end he totally changes into a new and mean person. His transition really works out well, and by the end of the film I hated him more than I actually liked him in the beginning.

Consensus: Nolan’s debut isn’t perfect and a bit flawed, but has a great way of story-telling, and some fine performances for this low-budget noir.

While the upcoming reboot for The Crow has not received the almighty greenlight, that hasn’t stopped producer Ryan Kavanaugh from being optimisc about the project.

“The Crow is definitely going to happen, we’re just getting all the pieces together right now,” he said. “It’s not officially greenlit, but it’s going to happen. I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure.”

Putting fans of the original Crow at ease, Kavanaugh stated that the film will not be a direct remake of the original classic starring the late Brandon Lee. Instead, it’s looked upon to be a relaunch of the franchise. Also, he’s already talking with actors.

“We’re approaching it differently,” he said. “It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type.”

The new Crow character will be “much more present day” and “he’ll have makeup, but it will be different. The best way to compare it is the first Batman and Batman Begins. In terms of their look and feel and character.”

The new The Crow, based on the work of James O’Barr, will be directed by Stephen Norrington.

The highlight of any Las Vegas trip, the huge number of them makes it impossible to visit every single one of them on two nights. Or maybe it is possible if you stay up for 48 hours straight. There were so many beautiful ones out on the strip that we weren’t able to walk into, but the favorites of mine that we did have the chance to visit were Paris, the Luxor and the Bellagio (no surprise there). The stinker about casinos is that you can’t take any pictures on the playing room floor because they have such a beautiful setting, especially the Bellagio.

It’s been around for quite a long time, and the last time I was there they had a little boat ride inside the hotel for people to ride. The tour boat ride is now gone, but that’s good though, you get to focus on the casino and the hotel itself, and the hotel is quite the setup.

Inside the pyramid you can see that all the doors to all the hotel rooms, which I can imagine is pretty sweet to have a view of the lobby floor and the casino as soon as you walk out of your room. The view from the outside is awesome with the pyramid and the ancient Egyptian statue.

Paris

Now i’ve never been to Paris, but from just how the casino tries to model the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, I think I may definitely want to take a trip and slam a few bottles of wine.

The Eiffel Tower has an elevator ride to get to the top, where you can take some great pictures of the Las Vegas skyline. I wish I had more time to check the view, because I can only imagine it being very beautiful.

The casino inside is pretty interesting as soon as you walk in. You see a part of the foundation of the Eiffel Tower come through the casino floor, where people have access to the elevators. As you walk through the casino floor, the ceilings sport clouds and a blue sky that brightens up the playing area, which is a welcome change from some of the dark and drab casino room floors at other hotels.

The hallway of shops and restaurants inside Paris I can only assume models some of the city streets you can find overseas. As you walk through it leads you to the casino room floor of Bally’s, which is right next door. Now right across from Paris is the Bellagio, and the awesome Bellagio Fountain.

The Bellagio

The cream of the crop is what I gotta say of the Bellagio. The fountain was the main draw to me, because once again playing and gambling isn’t my thing. But the hotel and casino is just gorgeous from inside out. Walking through to the casino floor I passed the shops inside, and with the shops they have you know only the people with good money stay here. The Bellagio was the main hotel target in the film Ocean’s 11, which made it just as cool walking through it. It’s kinda like walking through Chicago knowing that it was the site of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Upon walking up to the registration desk, on the ceiling is a beautiful arrangement of artificial flowers. The colors are eye catching and vibrant, and a photo doesn’t do it justice.

Right across from the registration desk is the site of the Bellagio Conservatory, home of a crapload of fresh flowers and one cool light display that changes every so often, complimenting the flowers, ‘lawn decorations’ and water fountains that is inside the conservatory. Currently it’s in it’s Fall theme, with a very scarecrow greeting you as you walk in.

The lawn decorations I speak of are the things that stick out of my head when thinking about the conservatory. It’s not a bad term I’m giving it, it’s just pretty interesting to see a couple of talking trees inside. it’s something I haven’t experienced since watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

It was definitely a fun trip out there and to get away from Chicago for a few days. If you’ve been reading my last few entries, just remember that if you head out to the Vegas desert, check out these spots on top of the other places you see, and don’t take Spirit airlines!

I have heard rumors she is one of the actresses who has been approached to play Catwoman in the next Batman movie, but I’ve also heard Chris Nolan quoted saying that Catwoman isn’t going to be in it. It doesn’t matter, because that would be lame anyways. She should not be Catwoman, regardless of whether Selina Kyle pops up in the next movie (a direction which would actually disappoint me).

What Rachel Weisz should do in the new Batman movies is play Talia, the daughter of Rā’s al Ghūl and love of Bruce Wayne’s life. Helloooo, she would be perfect! Talia seriously needs to once and for all get in the mainstream big screen storylines, especially considering how great the new movies Chris Nolan’s been making are: in the comics she even has Batman’s kid, for god’s sake (Damian Wayne, who is the current Robin). It’s already been set up, when, in the novelized Batman Begins, Rā’s al Ghūl refers to having a wife and daughter while he is talking to Bruce.

So, come on. Let’s finally get her in a movie, and let’s have Rachel Weisz play her. The woman is a stranger to neither action pictures (The Mummy franchise) nor comic book movies (the wildly underrated Constantine). That’s my awesome suggestion: obey!

In deze film worden de hoofdrollen gespeeld door Christian Bale als Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine als Alfred, Morgan Freeman als Lucius Fox, Gary Oldman als Jim Gordon, Rutger Hauer als Earle, Cillian Murphy als Dr. Jonathan Crane, Liam Neeson als Henri Ducard, Ken Watanabe als Ra’s Al Ghul, Colin McFarlane als Loeb en Katie Holmes als Rachel Dawes.

De kleine jongen Bruce Wayne zag zijn ouders voor zijn ogen wreed vermoord worden: een trauma dat hem voor de rest van zijn leven vervult met wraakgevoelens. Het lot laat hem zijn wraak echter niet uitvoeren. Ik vind dit een hele goede Batman-film. Juist het fet dat de beslissing die Bruce Wayne neemt om als Batman de misdaad te bestrijden halverwege de film genomen wordt vind ik moedig en is verder heel goed uitgewerkt.

Wat ik ook heel goed vind is dat je ziet dat Bruce Wayne altijd last heeft gehad van het feit dat zijn ouders voor zijn ogen vermoord zijn. Ook wel leuk om te zien dat Bruce Wayne bij een groep Ninja’s terecht gekomen is om zichzelf te stalen en veel te leren.

Verder blijft Gotham City gewoon erg gaaf om in beeld te brengen en dat is ook in deze film heel goed gelukt. De nieuwe batmobiel is natuurlijk supergaaf!!

Al met al een film die gewoon zeer goed en onderhoudend is.

So I was reading the latest Wired Magazine and I came across an article about Legendary Pictures and it’s founder Thomas Tull (another wired interview with him here). Basically he’s an ex investment banker or something who decided he’s going to start producing movies. So, he’s doing ok I guess. Check this list out.

So, that’s pretty good for not being around too long. Some of the biggest movies in the last 5 years (and some of my latest favorites) are on this list, so this company is making money.

Soon they will be coming out with Clash of the Titans, which looks cool.

 Katie Holmes, que estava longe das telonas, pelo menos com notoriedade desde Batman Begins, faz seu retorno aos cinemas. De acordo com a Variety ela entra para o filme “The Romantics”. Holmes é escalada para substituir Liv Tyler na comédia.

Holmes atuará ao lado de Anna Paquin (da série True Blood), Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody e Jeremy Strong.

Team Todd é um dos produtores do longa. O roteiro foi adaptado do próprio autor da comédia, Galt Niederhoffer.

A história acompanha oito amigos da escola que se reunem para o casamento. Holmes será Laura, a melhor amiga da noiva, Lila (Paquin). Ambas possuem um passado com o noivo (Duhamel),

As filmagens começam esta semana em Nova York. A produção do longa acontece de maneira independente.

Batman Begins and Dark Knight were terrific films, but Batman’s voice in them is borderline ridiculous. Not sure why this video is just coming out now but it’s an excellent parody in time for Halloween.

En primer lugar hablar del ya confirmado retorno de Logan/Lobezno a las pantallas. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” tuvo el suficiente éxito como para provocar una secuela. Lauren Shuler Donner, esposa del mítico Richard Donner y productora de todas las películas mutantes hasta la fecha afirmaba hace poco que una nueva entrega del mutante canadiense está confirmada y que en esta ocasión la historia se centraría en el pasado de Logan en Japón. Así, se repasa la mítica etapa de Frank Miller a bordo de la cabecera del mutante canadiense. Shuler Donner, añadía que aparecería Mariko, uno de los grandes amores de Logan y que probablemente la secuela se rodaría (al menos en parte) en el país del sol naciente.

El que tiene una posible secuela más en el aire es Magneto. David Goyer, que escribió junto a Cristopher Nolan, el guión de Batman Begins y su excelente secuela, escribió un guión, pero no es probable que se materialice en breves. Lo que si parece seguro es que Ian McKellen no saldría en ella.

Más mutantes. “X- Men: First” Class está en camino. Hablamos de lo que sería otra precuela con los mutantes míticos cuando eran jóvenes y estudiaban en el colegio de Charles Xavier.  Lauren Shuler Donner, también encargada de este proyecto, afirmaba que querían dar un tono oscuro al film y acercarlo al estilo del comic.

Otra secuela que parece confirmada es la de Deadpool (o Masacre como se conoce aquí). Asegura Donner que va a ser un reboot del personaje, obviando completamente lo visto en el spin-off de Lobezno. Quieren dar a la película un tono sarcástico y oscuro. Parece, eso si, que Ryan Reynolds volverá a ser el personaje.

Queden servidos de mutantes por ahora….

A drive-in near London opens with world’s largest screen.

Drive-ins always bring back in my mind the scene in Grease when Sandy leaves Danny. In the 1950’s, drive-ins were the place to go for a good night out. Going to watch a movie came close to meaning going to the drive-in. They became a symbol for the 1950’s and 1960’s America.

Today, people tend to think that drive-ins belong to the past. Yet they didn’t vanish from the face of earth. Drive-ins have indeed disapeared in most of european coutries. However, dozens of them remain open. There are quite a few in the US and some in countries such as Australia, China, and Canada. You can find a whole list of them here.

This month a new drive-in opens at Pinewood Studios, 20 miles away from London. For the occasion, they built the world’s largest screen. Their programmation is quite interesting. The Shining, The Fifth Element, Gladiator, and Batman Begins are among the films that are on the schedule.

So if you are in the mood to relive or get taste of the experience, Pinewood Studios is the place to check out. By the way, these were also the studio where part of Casino Royal was shot and they also contributed to all the films they’re showing.

The first screening will be on October 31st.

After suffering from a particularly nasty case of strep throat, I’m back to voraciously searching for new music. My latest find – “Blitz” released by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  Personal favorites are “Heads will Role”, “Zero” and “Dull Life”. I particularly love how the group has thrown in certain aspects of dance and electronica, seeing as I’m still loving genre! This new album of their’s is certainly a break from their normal endearingly unconventional selves – but I think it’s a step in the right direction! I seriously think “Heads will Role” and “Dull Life” should be theme songs (if they already aren’t). I totally see something young hollywood – edgy, catty, and totally fabulous.

I’ve also found myself stepping into a soundtrack stage … first it was musicals (Fame, Rent, Cats …) now it’s films (Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean…) I’m always amazed with where music can take me – one moment I’m caught up in Lady Gaga and the next I’m enthralled with the orchestral pieces from At the World’s End.

There is a really amazing rendition of “Molussus” from Batman Begins performed by the Cincinnati Pop Orchestra & Erich Kunzel. It’s a little bit of a variation from the original theme, but it’s definitely something every Batman fan should listen to.  On the other end of the soundtrack spectrum I’ve been on a little bit of a Ethel Merman kick – “No Business Like Show Business”, “Everything’s Coming up Roses”  – but my real favorite is this performance of “Anything you can do I can do better” with Ethel and Ray Middleton. He’s a real character, and from the sounds of it also a classically trained tenor! If you want a good laugh try and track down this version with the two of them performing, I crack up every time I hear them bickering!

Rounding up my latest obsession would have to be this live rendition of “Cabarte” sung by Liza Minnelli … ok I’ll admit she’s become a bit of a hot tranny mess … but you have to admit she was good! In her heyday she was it – one of the best shows in town to see! So I’ll stand by my right to consider her fabulous although a bit excentric and often times misguided in her judgements!!!

No ano de 1997, chegava aos cinemas Batman e Robin, o último produzido no ciclo que se iniciou com Tim Burton em Batman. O longa foi um completo fiasco de bilheteria, mesmo contando com nomes importantes da década como George Clooney (Batman), Chris O’Donnel (Robin) e a linda Alicia Silverstone (Batgirl). Saiu na Mtv americana uma reportagem interessante sobre isso.

Para o chefão da Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, este foi o melhor filme feito sobre quadrinhos. Absurdo? Totalmente, mas ele explica: “Era tão ruim que exigiu uma nova forma de fazer as coisas.”

Feige reinterou que não seria possível acontecer um renascimento de Batman como em TDK, se este longa não tivesse sido feito. Foi através dele que foi possível criar uma atmosfera mais próxima dos quadrinhos como em X-Men, Homem-Aranha, Homem de Ferro (do qual é uma das mentes criativas dos longas) e muitos outros. A declaração veio depois da L.A Times, publicar uma entrevisa falando sobre a carreira do multi-homem do cinema Akiva Goldsman, produtor do longa em que coloca Batman e Robin trabalhando juntos.

Goldsman admitiu na entrevista que houveram falhas no filme. Segundo o próprio, faltaram emoções reais.

Não é bem isso somente que faltou, não. Ficaram diveras lacunas em todos estes filmes que fizeram sobre Batman naquele período. Felizmente nos anos 2000, Batman renasceu com Christopher Nolan, no que se tornariam sucesso de bilheterias, mas também primorosos pela qualidade: Batman Begins e The Dark Knight.

You’re trying to sell the hype. But Bruce Wayne? Is not buying it.

Not for one second.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!  That’s me and The Lou in Muskoka last year…  Ah, The Lou.

A few quick points:

• Here’s the information on the show I’m in the mix for.
• Spoke with my manager yesterday afternoon.  Her words: “The casting director thinks you’re a choice, we don’t know about the producers yet.”
• Making the casting director a fan is 8 steps north of outstanding.  His IMDB page looks like Barry Bonds offensive stats from 2001 – 2006.  A few highlights: Zomblieland, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Memento, Boiler Room and Austin Powers.

So now I wash my hands of this project and move onto the next one.  Whatever will be, will be.  (The future’s not mine to see…  Que sera, sera.)  If every audition follows this script (pun intended), I’m going to have some fun.

John Woo’s massive historical epic comes to America – in condensed form – this November.

The most expensive film in Asian production history but also the highest-grossing among Chinese cinema to date, director John Woo’s Red Cliff relates the momentous Battle of Red Cliffs that marked the end of China’s Han Dynasty and the beginning of its Three Kingdoms period in the Third Century CE. The film also presents something of a comeback for Woo himself, marking his first Chinese film since 1992 and his first full-length feature since the 2003 flop Paycheck.

Though the Asian release saw the four hour-plus epic cut into two parts, American audiences will see an abbrieviated 148-minute version that condenses the complicated and far-reaching story into a single narrative while introducing new footage that helps explain and clarify the depicted events. The film follows Han Chancellor Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) as he leads the Imperial Army on an expedition to crush Southern warlords Sun Quan (Chang Chen) and Liu Bei (You Yung). Desperate for new territory with which to bolster their crumbling empire, the Han army is swift and merciless, overrunning provinces and killing civilians as well as combatants.

Liu Bei and his compatriots lead the defense of the civilians and their own lands, eventually allying with Sun Quan in a last-ditch effort at defense even while Cao Cao’s forces approach the city of Red Cliff, situated along the strategically crucial south bank of the Yangtze River. Quan’s sister, Sun Shangxiang (Zhao Wei), infiltrates Cao Cao’s camp to gather intelligence while leaders on both sides beg, borrow, and steal the supplies and intelligence needed to gain an upper hand. Much of the film’s Asian release detailed the intrigue and human drama leading up to the cataclysmic main engagement, with subterfuge and deceit blooming all around. By the end of the battle the victorious Sun and Liu retain their holdings south of the Yangtze, in time establishing the kingdoms that would come to be known as Shu Han and Eastern Wu.

Woo also co-wrote the screenplay, basing the story not on the landmark historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (celebrated as one of the finest novels in all of Chinese literature) but on the more neutrally-toned historical record Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, which reportedly presents a more even-handed treatment of characters on both sides of the fighting. As perhaps a sign of the film’s importance as a Chinese cultural event, the nation’s government lent the production more than 100,000 soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army to serve as extras for the combined naval and land battle.

For all that scale the story is also one of characters, many of whom are legends in their own right and revered throughout 17 centuries of Chinese history. Though the cast is stocked to overflowing with Chinese actors both veteran and up-and-coming, the film’s earlier announced cast would have offered a meeting of stars seldom seen: screen legend Chow Yun-Fat (The Killer) was slated to star as Zhou Yu, Quan’s military commander, but withdrew over script and contract disputes. Japanese actor Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins) was cast as Cao Cao but was released after the production drew complaints for casting a non-Chinese actor in such an important role. Finally, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Internal Affairs) was originally cast as strategist Zhuge Liang (played now by Takeshi Kaneshiro) but replaced Chow instead.

Woo himself became a legend in the early 90s, thanks to staggeringly innovative and artistic work on action films such as Hard Boiled (1992) and especially 1989’s The Killer. His American career was less impressive, starting slowly with the Jean Claude Van Damme vehicle Hard Target (1993) and reaching through the John Travolta-led films Broken Arrow (1996) and Face-Off (1997), both somewhat formulaic efforts that often cribbed plot devices or imagery from Woo’s earlier, Asian-produced work. His films in the current decade have been even less noteworthy, including the Nicolas Cage-starring Windtalkers (2001) and the aforementioned Paycheck.

Still, there’s something about such a sweeping and important work that feels a natural fit for Woo, and if the reduced version does well in theatres hopefully a restored DVD edition will find its way to American shelves.

Red Cliff opens in limited release November 20.

Ieri sera ho guardato il lungometraggio di debutto di Christopher Nolan, “Following”. Innanzitutto sono rimasto molto colpito perchè il film è girato tutto in handycam e in bianco e nero. Poi, secondo me, è un bel film davvero…ve lo consiglio! Io lo vedo un po’come un prototipo di “Memento” dal punto di vista stilistico, soprattutto nel fatto di mostrare le scene in ordine non cronologico.

Un’altra cosa che mi ha colpito è che, a un certo punto, sulla porta di uno degli appartamenti rapinati da Bill e Cob appare, indovinate un po’…un simbolo di Batman! Coincidenza o segno del destino? Tra l’altro l’attore protagonista, Jeremy Theobald, in seguito interpreterà il giovane tecnico del servizio idrico di Gotham City in “Batman Begins”.
