Despite the varied nature of all the artwork he has contributed to the world, H.R. Giger is still probably best known for his (shamefully underpaid) work on the designers for the eponymous creatures of the Alien film franchise. Though he didn’t directly contribute to most of what you see in the later films (and certainly not the AvP revival), there’s still so much to be said for the amazing creatures he created. Over in our Aliens & AvP section, we just opened up pre-orders for the original alien Giger designed. Known as “Big Chap”, he looks a little something like this.

But what’s even more interesting is that we were recently given our first look at Giger’s work on another massive film franchise: he contributed a strange, organic Batmobile design for the hit Batman Forever, starring Val Kilmer, Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones and Nicole Kidman. His design was definitely a far cry from the original, which you can see here in this article by WorstPrevires.com.

In 1994, “Alien” concept designer HR Giger was hired to design a new Batmobile for “Batman Forever,” that saw Val Kilmer don the Batsuit to battle The Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones).

Giger’s unique “X” shaped design was to include articulated front legs/mandibles, retractable fins, and gatling gun emplacements on each of the four pods on the sides of the vehicle. The design also combined side and forward intake ports with spines and a central pod connecting the four legs.

Director Joel Schumacher eventually decided against the design and went with a slightly different and monstrous version of the Batmobile. Check out the designs below.

I got to hang out with the Batmobile!

My good friend Dmitriy is friends with legendary custom car designer George Barris. For months now, Dmitriy has been inviting me to accompany him to Barris’ shop, and I finally took him up on the offer.

I could write a thousand words about how cool it was to stand next to some of the cars I grew up watching on television. But instead, I’ll let these photos do the talking.

Next to the Batmobile was another of George’s famous custom creations: K.I.T.T. from “Knight Rider.”

And lastly, we poked around in George’s garage where we found the classic Munster Koach from “The Munsters.”

At first, I asked Dmitriy to take a picture of me next to the Koach.

But then he suggested I get inside for a shot.

And you know, because it’s the friggin’ Munster Koach, I had to.

Ho visto la Batmobile. Si, quella vera, si a grandezza naturale, e no, non sto delirando. Mentre tornavo a casa dall’ufficio sono stata attratta da una folla di fotografi e flash all’altezza della Quinta e 29th Street. Paparazzi, auto di lusso, folla urlante…possono voler dire una cosa sola: VIPs nei paraggi! Sebbene non sia una cacciavip, il mio spirito da reporter (?!) mi ha costretto ad avvicinarmi – ed e’ li’ che l’ho vista. La Batmobile. In realta’ non conoscevo nessuno dei VIPs che si facevano fotografare davanti – ho solo realizzato vedendo un cartello che si trattava di un’asta in favore dell’associazione Life Project for Africa (e solo andando sul sito successivamente che la bellissima ragazza che si faceva fotografare era Miss Tanzania). Ma cio’ che ha piu’ attirato la mia attenzione era lei, la Batmobile, soprattutto quando, con una sgasata, sono uscite fiamme dagli scarichi! Quindi l’associazione mentale New York – Gotham City e’ fondata, e magari la’ fuori c’e’ davvero il Bruce Wayne della situazione a vegliare sulla citta’!
Comunque, ritornando alla realta’, di fianco alla Batmobile c’era anche un uomo che portava al braccio un’aquila. Si, si, un’aquila vera! Avendo visto dal vivo solo qualche ammaestratore di falchetti durante la ricostruzione storica della vita della regina Teodolinda a Monza, capite che trovarmi a meno di un metro da un animale cosi’ maestoso e inusuale e’ stata un’emozione fortissima!
Incontri fuori dall’inimmaginabile? No, solo una serata come le altre a New York.

Batman, Robin and the Batmobile were a big hit last night. We went to the subdivision across the street, as our neighborhood of six houses is not conducive to a treat sweep.

The kids could not contain their joy. And Eddie was positively glowing with pride when people ooh-ed and aah-ed over the Batmobile.

At the very last house, the unthinkable happened: Their archenemy, the Joker, appeared (in the form of a 10-year-old in greasepaint).

He sidled up next to the Batmobile and hissed, “Batman.” Batman and Robin were shocked that the Joker would be so bold. They scrambled out of the Batmobile, ready to give chase, with Batman yelling, “Let’s get that Joker!” Batman did have to pause to gently place his bag of loot on the sidewalk, but then took off in hot pursuit. Eddie had to round them back up, much to their dismay.

Today they woke up with two thoughts, and two thoughts only: We need to find the Joker, and we need to eat all the candy in those bags. (Side note: Gideon ended up with so much more candy than Dominic because of how he completely embraced the candy-gathering: He ran up to each house hollering “Trick or Treat!” and smiling at everyone, charming the pants off folks.)

Eddie took them back over to canvass the neighborhood. He said they are convinced that the Joker was taking candy from children and needs to be in police custody.

Though they interviewed many people, they were unable to locate the Joker. (Curses! Foiled again!) The search continues.

While working on Eleventh Hour in LA-land British writer Stephen Gallagher describes dropping in on the maker of the original 60s Batmobile. Cool or what!

It is so bizarre to see my personality replicated and squashed into a three-foot-high boy body. Dominic is so much like me. When I decide I want something or want to do something, there is no stopping me. Fine when we are talking life goals. Not so fine when we are talking projects around the house. I know I drive Eddie crazy. And now he has two focused folks on his back.

The Batmobile is not quite done, and Dominic is obsessed with badgering us about finishing it. It needs a little paint touch-up, the cupholders (seriously, but they were Eddie’s idea), and a bat icon on the front. I think I’m supposed to create that out of wood, but I’m not sure. I promised we would finish it today. I know he’ll hold me to it.

Imagine showing up to a premiere or an event in this!  A full sized replica of the Batmobile was spotted on the streets of Sweden last week.  This replica Batmoblie is made from a 1973 Lincoln Continental and took over 3 and half years/20,000 hours to make.  The owner also invested $1 million US dollars to build this beast which also comes with a built-in DVD player, voice recognition, hydraulics and reversing cameras.

This sleek Batmobile replica comes equipped with a plasma TV, machine guns, DVD player, satellite navigation, voice recognition, height adjustable body, and rear view video cameras. Now if you want to follow suit and build your own superhero car, then you might need to know that this Batmobile was a $1 million dollar effort.

When it comes to cool cockpits, Bruce Wayne ain’t got nothing on Nissan’s Land Glider. This concept vehicle bears flat color screens and joysticks with touch surfaces, looking more futuristic than any other car we’ve laid our eyes on. An electric car with a narrow body frame and a balancing system for sharper turns, the Land Glider might look silly, but its the future. Go Green!

La dernière fois j´ai raté les chevreuils en mobilette. Cette fois, j´ai harcelé mon collègue pour qu´il me prenne en photo cette extraordinaire voiture dans les rues de Stockholm.

A deux rues de mon travail, était garée la fameuse Batmobile (la voiture de Batman donc). Cette oeuvre crée par un riche fan suédois, est réalisée d´après une Lincoln Continental 1973.

Faut pas avoir honte de conduire ça dans les rues quand même…Qui tente le crénau?

As a non-driver, I shouldn’t be your first choice person to advise you on the Australian vehicular culture. After all, I shared with you about a bogan ute, but it’s actually a B&S ute.

Standard sedans don’t usually (even vaguely) resemble Batmobiles, so I’m assuming/presuming (I don’t know the difference; yes, I’m dim) this is a hoon car. I redacted the licence plate, but I can tell you it was a personalised one, with a Z in place of an S, and no apostrophe. All this put together leads me to believe the owner is a tosser. (Yes, Wikipedia explains everything better than I can – read and learn, kids.) Bruce Wayne was a tosser, wasn’t he? Batman or not, a tosser is still a tosser…

El ultimate fanboy de Batman vive en Suecia y pasó nada menos que 20 mil horas (OMFG!) en crear una réplica (que más que una réplica parece el original) Batmobile. Lo mejor de todo es que no sólo es igual por fuera, sino que además tiene muchísimos juguetitos que te harán pensar que realmente eres el hombre murciélago: tiene cámaras que te permiten ver hacia atrás, armas (de mentira, lógicamente) y un plasma.

Lo malo es que si ya estás pensando en tomarte el primer avión que salga hacia Suecia para comprarlo, no vas a poder y te va a costar mucho más que eso, porque, antes que nada, esto es una única unidad y, además, fue creada en 3 años y le costó un millón de dólares para poder terminarse

Il y a des jours où j’aimerai être suédois, avoir dépensé 1 million de dollars et passé plus de 3 ans sur l’oeuvre de ma vie, pour pouvoir moi aussi conduire ma propre Batmobile. Et si la réplique espagnole de celle utilisée dans Batman Forever était impressionnante techniquement, le modèle qui nous a fait saigner des yeux dans le Batman de Tim Burton gardera à jamais une saveur particulière. Malgré un Michael Keaton plus proche physiquement de Julien Lepers que de Bruce Wayne.
