This is a good compact GPS logger, which is primarily intended for geotagging digital photos.

The idea here is that the GPS logger periodically records your GPS location and then, later on, the Holux Logger Utility takes this timestamped GPS information and compares it against the JPG timestamps on your photos. Then for each photo, it can find the GPS record that best matches the photo time and add that GPS location information to the photo.

The basic idea works well. The M-241 is sometimes a little awkward to use, but I like mine enough that after I accidentally lost my first one, I quickly bought a second. I use the GPS info for both tagging photos and for generating route maps.

Some specific positives:
* The logger is very compact and easily fits into a pocket.
* The Holux logger utility uploads GPS data as either proprietary TRL files or as Google Earth KML files. The KML files can be easily viewed with Google Earth.
* GPS signal sensitivity is quite good. It can sometimes take ten minutes or so to get an initial fix, but it tracks quickly thereafter.
* The LCD display is useful: I enjoy being able to watch things like direction, or speed, or travel distance as I travel.

Now some weaknesses:
* A Duracell Alkaline AA lasts me about 15 hours and a Lithium AA about 22 hours. (Fairly typical battery life for a GPS device.)
* The battery case cover is rather flimsy and needs cautious handling.
* The two button control UI on the logger takes a little getting used to. I can now navigate it quickly, but I initially found it rather frustrating.
* The logger utility UI is distinctly clunky and the manual is rather weak. The UI does the job, but not particularly elegantly.
* You need to keep your camera time synchronized with the logger’s time and you need to compensate for timezone differences when you do the photo tagging.

You can use either USB or Bluetooth to communicate with the logger. I’ve been using USB on Vista, without any problems. I can’t speak to the Bluetooth functionality.

Some suggestions:
* Make sure to download the latest firmware and logger utility from the Holux website. The latest versions have bug fixes and some feature additions.
* In the logger settings, turn “AutoLog” to “on”. This means it will start logging as soon as it gets a GPS fix, and you don’t have to remember to separately turn on logging.
* Rather than worrying about time zones, I ended up leaving my camera permanently in UTC+0 (GMT). The logger always writes its TRL records in UTC+0, so this means I can tag photos without having to specify a timezone adjustment.
* By default, the logger logs every 5 seconds. I moved it to every 30 seconds, which I find adequate for photo location and lets me store over a month of records.
* If you’re using USB, it’s worth turning off the Bluetooth radio to save power. (This is a new feature in the v1.12 firmware.)

Overall, this isn’t perfect, but I find it very convenient as a lightweight tool for GPS and photo logging.

simple logger that works – Paul Macey – Los Angeles, CA United States
I’ve had this for a few months, and it works. I take it hiking and use other software (GPicSync, free) to geotag the photos. Make sure you set your camera to the right time (get the “true” time from the logger). I seems pretty accurate, finds the satellites after a little while (< 1 min), and has enough recording options. I really like that it uses AA batteries; it will run all day on a lithium rechargeable (2700 mah) that I also use for my camera. When I'm away for a few days, I just bring extra AA's. It can store a lot of waypoints. It has distance and time logging options, can display speed, distance traveled, location, can be locked to avoid accidentally turning logging on/off. And it's been knocked around without complaining.

The USB and bluetooth work fine on a couple of computers (XP); it is important to install the USB drivers before connecting it. I find the USB much easier than the bluetooth. You can adjust the settings from the software, which makes life easier.

OK, some quirks: the software appears to offer geotagging, but does not; the GPicSync works great though. With the USB connection, you have to figure out which COM port it connects to; this is trial and error (COM6 for me), but it stays the same each time you connect it. If it runs out of power while logging, the file is lost (same thing if you accidentally turn it off); there is a low-battery indicator, but you need to be checking it pretty regularly, or have a good idea how long your battery will last. The battery cover feels pretty fragile. You can’t tell it to start logging until you get a fix on the satellites, which means each time you turn it on you need to remember to start logging a minute later.

I think for money and convenience (AA, reasonable memory, accuracy), it’s the best logging option – at least in March it was!
Positives and negatives – Christopher Erickson –
Cute little gadget. It is a comparatively fast and sensitive little Bluetooth GPS unit with a tiny display that can show Lat/Lon/Alt/Speed/Compass/etc. and has a backlight. It will also automatically or manually log waypoints and routes with a modest number of configurable options. It works great with my Treo 680 Smartphone and DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2006 Handheld Edition. In fact it is more reliable than my DeLorme Bluetooth GPS’s. Running 12 hours on an alkaline AA battery is rather amazing. The fact that the accompanying software can export the saved waypoint and route data in a number of formats, including NMEA and Google Earth KMZ format is cool. The software is a bit primative but it seems to work. I hope they come out with some updates.

Now for the negatives.

The USB driver doesn’t seem to work properly on XP!!!

It seems to work okay on Win2K Pro.

Fortunately it is possible to connect your XP PC and the data download software to the M-241 over Bluetooth and get the data off of it. Slowly.

And Holux Technical Support (email to China) seems to be strictly a one-way communication medium. You send them emails and nothing ever comes back.

Would I buy it again? Yes! It’s cheap and works great as an amazingly sensitive and fast little GPS. And if you can negotiate the usual quirks and user hostility of Bluetooth, you can make it do everything that Holux promises it can do. However it sure would be nice if Holux fixed the stupid USB driver for XP!

Orange County Diesel and OCDiesel.com are proud to announce we are now stocking Odyssey Automotive B

Orange County Diesel and OCDiesel.com are proud to announce we are now stocking Odyssey Automotive Batteries!

Phenomenal starting power and massive deep cycle reserve power in one battery!

Some batteries provide enormous cranking power. Others, deep cycle reserve power. The revolutionary ODYSSEY battery is designed to do both.

How is this possible? The answer begins with flat plates made of 99.99% pure virgin lead – not lead alloy. Pure lead plates can be made thinner, so we can fit more of them in the battery. More ODYSSEY battery plates mean more plate surface area. And that means more power – twice as much as conventional batteries.

In fact, ODYSSEY batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2250 amps for 5 seconds – double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even at very low temperatures. And they can handle 400 charge-discharge cycles to 80% depth of discharge.

Designed and built to last up to 3 times as long.
Thanks to rugged construction and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) design, ODYSSEY batteries have an 8-12 year design life and a 3-10 year service life. Welded intercell connections enable it to withstand extreme vibration, and AGM design holds acid in place to prevent spills, even when installed on its side. And unlike conventional batteries, ODYSSEY batteries can be stored for up to 2 years and still be returned to full power.*

*At 25C (77F). Storage times will be even longer at lower temperatures.

Better Warranty
Limited 3 and 4-Year full replacement warranty – not pro rata.

Longer Service Life
With 3-10 years of service life, ODYSSEY batteries save consumers time, money, and aggravation.

Longer Cycle Life
70% longer cycle life compared to conventional deep cycle batteries – up to 400 cycles at 80% depth of discharge – high stable voltage for longer periods of time.

Longer Self Life
Can be stored on open circuit (nothing connected to the terminals) without the need for recharging up to 2 years or down to 12.00V, whichever occurs first.

Faster Recharge
The highest recharge efficiency of any sealed lead battery on the market – capable of 100% recharge in 4-6 hours.

Mounting Flexibility
Non-spillable design – can be mounted on any side in any position except inverted.

Vibration Resistance
Designed protects against high impact shock and mechanical vibration – a common cause of premature battery failure.

Extreme Temperature Tolerant
Operating temperatures from -40C (-40F) to 80C (176F).

Totally Maintenance Free
No need to ass water, ever! Drycell design with resalable venting system.

Improved Safety
US Department of Transportation classified as a non-spillable battery. No acid spills, no escaping gases.

Built for a Range of Performance
Everyday Vehicles, Classic & Antique Cars, 4×4 & Off-Road, High Performance Vehicles, Modified Vehicles.

Minuscule amounts of radioactive elements could safely power handheld electrical devices for months

Minuscule amounts of radioactive elements could safely power handheld electrical devices for months or even years, according to new research from the University of Missouri.

Such electronics could help to eliminate mildly radioactive substances while providing cheap and reliable power.

“This is not a nuclear reaction. Nothing will explode; there won’t be a mushroom cloud on your property,” said Jae Kwon, a professor at the University of Missouri developing radioactive batteries.
“We are using the radiation coming from the material and turning that into electricity,” he added.
The material in question is sulfur 35, an energy packed isotope of an element most people associate with the smell, and color, of rotten eggs. In nature, sulfur 35 forms when cosmic rays break apart argon in the upper atmosphere.
Within a battery, sulfur 35 spits out mildly radioactive electrons as it decays. To harvest those electrons and convert them into electricity, Kwon surrounds the sulfur with selenium, a liquid semiconductor. The selenium traps the electrons trying to escape, channeling them into a source of electricity.
Less than one milligram of sulfur 35 is contained in a package smaller than a penny. Using such a small amount helps to ensure that the levels of radiation are small, but also limits the amount of power that can be produced.
“We are talking about nanowatts of power here,” said Kwon. “That power level can be increased if we use a material with a higher energy density.”
Uranium or other materials that emit either more radiation or more energetic radiation should boost the power supply. Kwon is currently studying other potential power sources, but won’t specify which ones.
Whatever the material, radioactive batteries would be ideal for small devices like environmental sensors placed in remote or difficult regions to reach, or as the power source for electronic implants that could last the lifetime of a patient, eliminating the need for repeat surgeries.
That said, there are concerns about using radioactive materials as a power supply.
“The negatives of this are easy: This is radioactive material, which means any battery has to be encapsulated in a package that doesn’t allow the radioactive rays to penetrate outside the package,” said Mehran Mehregany, a scientist at Case Western Researve University.
Disposing of a radioactive battery also raises some concerns. Although he half life of sulfur 35 is only 87 days, as opposed to the more than 700 million-year half-life of some uranium isotopes, scientists wouldn’t want even mildly radioactive material like sulfur 35 to leak into the environment where it could cause harmful mutations in animals or cancer in humans.
However, Kwon is quick to downplay such concerns. Kwon notes that current AA and AAA battery need a special disposal system. A similar system could be developed for radioactive batteries as well.
The biggest obstacle to producing a radioactive battery isn’t the technology, notes Megregany.
“All the technology exists to create a radioactive battery,” said Mehregany. “It just needs to be put in the right package.”

I have now finished crocheting the Mario and Luigi heads my brother had asked me to make for him. But I have a surprise for him: I’m making a Yoshi for him! He is actually buying the Mario and Luigi, but Yoshi will be his Yule gift. I followed a pattern for the Mario and Luigi, but I am making my own Yoshi pattern. The Mario and Luigi heads are roughly baseball size, a little bigger. I had to make two Luigi hats because the first one turned out way too big.

I will try to get some photographs on here, but I may be a little late with them.

Speaking of photos, I got new batteries for my camera. Now I can take more photos for this blog! I am so happy!

The batteries are Maxell alkaline AA batteries. 1.5 volts. If that matters.

Have you ever heard of the book called Keeping Chickens? Here is a link to the Amazon.ca page for it: Keeping Chickens.

This is making me think about the website called My Pet Chicken. It’s all about chickens. They even sell chickens and chicken-themed gifts and whatnot. Oh, and have I mentioned that I like the Rhode Island Red breed of chicken? This is the My Pet Chicken page about it: Rhode Island Red.

I would show you my photographs of my Mario and Luigi, but the USB cable isn’t here, so I can’t get them onto the computer. But I want to tell you this amusing bit of thought: the photos look like the line-up photos. You know, when the line of people stand facing forward for a photo, then they turn sideways for another? Anyway, I found that funny.

Well, this post, besides being on the wrong day, is long enough. See you tomorrow!

Good morning everybody! It’s me, Laurie. My favorite holiday is almost among us. Turkey Day! No presents, just the big elaborate meal with close family and friends. A day for reminiscing about relatives past and being thankful for the family and friends you share your holiday with. Thanksgiving is the true family day.

Now, let me tell you about my family. I am one of 5 children and I am the oldest. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine not having my siblings and truthfully would be lost without them. (Most especially my oldest brother, who is our notorious family peacemaker). All of us laugh, we fight, we are all loud, animated, out spoken and yes sometimes crazy. With my family, it seems like there is always some kind of drama going on. As sad as this might seem, to me, this is normal. I guess in a way it’s a good thing. I am very hard to surprise and can easily adapt to any situation. When you come from a large family, you learn the art of compromise very early on. It’s a survival skill. We all model our parents in certain ways. My father is very animated, social, strong willed and successful. My mother is very ladylike, organized, poised and has an uncanny way of getting you to agree to do things you don’t want to do. I got social from dad and organized (I like to refer to it as OCD) from mom. (I guess you can’t pick what you get?)

After our infamous meal, our discussions always turn to the big “Black Friday” sales and talk about our next big holiday celebration. I have been thinking about what would be the best gift to get my many siblings. I know many families have customs of picking names or only buy for the children but it has always been our family tradition to buy for all. Besides, you have a year to get it done (LOL).

Our tradition is whatever you buy one sibling; you buy for all your siblings. (This stems from our childhood when my father insisted that we all get the same thing to be fare- I’m not kidding) So, to follow that taught ritual, we buy non-gender specific items and give the same thing to each one of our siblings. (Yes, I know it’s odd)

This year, I found an item that I thought would be a great non-gender specific sibling Christmas present. I found a power failure light by ReSource Inc. called the Flip Light. I have one in my house and find it quite handy. The Flip Light plugs into the wall and will turn on automatically when the power goes out. It also doubles as a flashlight. I use it at night when I walk the dog and it has supplied light in my hallway during a blizzard. What I like most about this light is that it uses rechargeable AA batteries and sits flat against the wall. Most power failure lights come with built in rechargeable batteries. Built in batteries give the flashlight a shelf life. The batteries will eventually die and you will have to throw away the flashlight. I don’t like to throw away money. I am always looking for quality products and refuse to spend good money on junk. The Flip Light uses AA rechargeable batteries so you can replace them when needed. This increases the product’s longevity and takes it out of the disposable product category. This product is worth the money you pay.

Well, that’s it for now. Everyone enjoy your Turkey Day and I will chat with you all again soon!

Please feel free to leave me a comment or contact me at lplante@resourceproducts.com

EV cars have long fascinated me, frankly I want one. I have wanted one since GM’s controversia

EV cars have long fascinated me, frankly I want one. I have wanted one since GM’s controversial ev1 program. For many EV’s are perfect since the average person does not travel more than 40 miles a day. One of the barriers for widespread EV adoption though is the Battery Technology unfortunately.

Large scale batteries add a pretty hefty cost to the price of a car and have an unavoidable limit on how far one can travel with a single charge; not to mention the impact on the environment. So the customer is paying more for a handicapped vehicle. I love the EV concept and even I get that. Until this is either overcome completely or at minimum total mileage is around 120 miles with little to no cost difference EV’s will remain a niche product. They will have a place in the market, but will never rule the roads.

One promising technology is a liquid battery called Redox Flow. In this type of battery a charged fluid and be extracted when it loses its charge and then replaced with freshly charged fluid. These fluids can be used over and over again which makes it sustainable unlike many of our current battery technologies. With this concept one could pull into a “gas” station, pump out expired battery fluid, pump in fresh fluid, the station could then recharge the fluid, and sell it right back. Conceivably this tech could not only kill out dependence on foreign oil it could save/create jobs through “gas” stations AND eliminate the pollution to refine and transport petrol.

Laptop batteries are a fascinating work of engineering. They live, they die, and then they are resurrected. I have always struggled with prolonging each brief recharged life in my laptop batteries ever since my first Powerbook 145B back in 1993.

Now I have a late 2008 aluminum unibody MacBook (MacBook5,1). I am a little displeased with my battery life, which usually tops out between 4-5 hours (I believe I was promised at least 6 hours when I purchased it). However, I have figured out a few things on my own and read others on the net that may lead to longer battery life for your MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Power cycle your battery. I do this each time that I use my Macbook. What this means is to run your MacBook off its battery until it goes into deep sleep. Then, plug your power cord in and let it recharge completely. This keeps the battery properly calibrated.

Turn off your radios. When I’m on the go, I always turn off Bluetooth, because I don’t carry my wireless Mighty Mouse with me. Also, I only turn on Airport when I plan on surfing the web.

Reduce your screen brightness. I lower my screen brightness to the lowest level, which works fine in good indoor lighting.

Run fewer concurrent apps. This means not only running fewer apps that you directly interact with, but also keep background running apps to a minimum. If something is eating up processor cycles, then it is eating power from your battery.

Streamline your browser. During the school day, I usually only leave Safari open as I go from class to class teaching. Flash is terribly inefficient on MacOS X (I say this, because it is hard to imagine how Flash ads can cause Flash to take upwards of 100% processor use, leading to more heat expenditure, and increased fan use). Make sure Flash is up to date, and install Safari AdBlocker (64-bit) and ClickToFlash to reduce ad trash and invoke Flash when you want it. Also, I only use one tab/window with Safari 4 to reduce its memory footprint and hopefully processor time.

Try other browsers. In this article, AnandTech demonstrated that your choice of browser and the things that you browsing will affect your battery life. However, they tested a number of browsers on PCs, and not Macs. Obviously, the underlying hardware on the newer Macs and PCs are similar, but the applications themselves on the two platforms will be affected by the OS, APIs, different library builds, etc. So, I don’t know which browser works best on Macs to increase battery life, but I do hope that someone out there will run a methodical test to determine which browser at the moment saves the most juice. If you do this, please post a comment with a link to your results.

Leopard vs. Snow Leopard. I am currently running Snow Leopard, and I do not find an appreciable difference in run time between the two OSs. However, there is a tremendous amount of debate over this issue online. This is something else that requires methodical testing to determine, and I have not found anyone to have done so on a baseline piece of hardware.

Be radical. Some folks online have removed their optical drives in order to save a little power, and others swear by SSDs at saving more power than traditional HDDs. My MacBook has an Apple supplied SSD, but I do not have another MacBook identical to mine to compare run times.

What did I miss? Leave a comment below.

Yesterday afternoon we had to stop at the auto parts store to pick up a new battery for Shelia the E

Yesterday afternoon we had to stop at the auto parts store to pick up a new battery for Shelia the Elantra. Colder morning she takes a little extra “umph” to turn over. I’d rather spend the money and time now getting a new battery when it’s not as frigid as will be in a few months. I’m responsable like that. Plus I panick, break into a cold sweat, cry, and poop myself a little when a car doesn’t start right away.

We went to O’Reilly because the Auto-zone down the road chocked full of wannabe hot rod builders who haven’t excepted they aren’t going to be the next Jack Roush. We’ve had problems with that Auto-zone in the past and now avoid their pissy ”I know everything because I rebuild a 85′ bronco in my mom’s garage” attitude by going a quart mile down the road to O’Reilly’s Auto. If you have one of them in your area check them out.

Melissa has had great luck when we were having problems last winter with Storm Shadow (our 96′ Bonneville we previously owned) of going there and they’d show her how to fix various things. She’s great at playing the ditsy woman who doesn’t know a thing about things automotive…..even though she knows more about cars than most guys out there.

We pulled up and she said “You know, I probably won’t get as great service with you with me. I won’t be able to flirt to get a better deal.”

She had a point so I waited in the car as she went into to broker a new battery. As I sat alone in the car waiting for her to sweet talk an unsuspecting auto parts worker and watching other customers who knew what they were doing there a few thoughts popped into my mind.

There is no shame waiting in the car as you wife plays stupid to get better service

You can’t go to an auto parts store if your car is newer than 2004. If you need washer fluid or anti freeze best just go to the dealership because a part stores won’t let you in the parking lot.

Instead of handicapped parking spots Auto Parts stores have spaces reserved for mid 90’s Camaro. If you’re blasting White Snake you get valet parking

The ratio of rust to ghetto-ness is proportionate to the ratio of stickers to crapy-ness of the factory radio.

Quiz time: Fuzzy dice aren’t cool if a)you’re driving a Oldsmobile Alero b) they’re blue neon fuzzy dice c)your over 21 d) almost get t-boned pulling out because you can’t see other cars due to said fuzzy dice e)wearing la gear high top sneakers f) all of the above

It’s hard to look manly with the Auto parts store guy comes out to install the new battery and sees you sleeping like a baby in the front seat.

There’s a little crack between the dash and open hood where you can see through. When the auto parts guy bend over to unhook the old battery and makes eye contact it’s very awkward.

The smaller in size you are the farther you need to have the seat back. Can’t be “hollering at no beotches” with a drivers seat reclined to the proper angle. I swear I saw a 16 year old who was 4 foot tall, 110lbs driving from the trunk.

When a battery is hooked it resets the car’s electronics even if the car isn’t on. This may cause the CD to eject from the stereo. I am the only one who thinks this is amazing feat of automotive engineering. Even your wife will look embarrassed when you yell “Look, Sheila barfed up the CD” from inside the car.

Sweat pants are fine to wear as long as your truck has at least one different color door than the body. The multi colored paint job may be substituted for a missing window repaired with a garbage bag and duct tape.

In the end we got a new battery and I learned a little bit more about life.

The way GeekTool works is you put modules (called Geeklets) on your desktop, give it some code, a refresh rate, and it shows whatever you told it to. You can place it anywhere you want, make it any colour you want, and any size you want. The design possibilities are endless.

Desktop using GeekTool

This is what my desktop looks like, and it updates in real time to show me the time, date, battery percentage left, weather, and upcoming months.

So how can you do this? First you need to download GeekTool. Once you have it installed you just need to go to System Preferences>Geek Tool and you’re all set to start adding Geeklets.

Grab the shell Geeklet and drag it onto your desktop. There should be a properties window open with a whole bunch of fields that you can modify. The one we’re looking for is command. This is where you’ll be entering your code.

Date

Command: date +%d
Refresh rate: 300s

Using a capital D will display the date in Month/Day/Year format.

Month

Command: date +%B
Refresh Rate: 1800s

Using a lowercase B will show the abbreviated month (Nov)

Day of the Week

Command: date +%A
Refresh Time: 1800s

Using a lowercase A will show the abbreviated day (Sat)

Weather

Command:

curl --silent "http://weather.yahooapis.com/forecastrss?p=CITYDATA&u=c" |
grep -E '(CurrentConditions:|C<BR)'
| sed -e 's/Current Conditions://' -e 's/<br \/>//' -e 's/<b>//'
-e 's/<\/b>//' -e 's/<BR \/>//' -e 's///' -e 's/<\/description>//'

Refresh Time: 1800s

This code is going to change based on your location. First what you have to do is go to Yahoo Weather and search for your city.
Once you've found your city in the link you'll find a code for your city. For example mine is CAXX0343.
You need to replace CITYDATA with this code for this to work.

To get it to work in fahrenheit there are two things you're going to have to do.

You're still going to use the same CITYDATA code but you're the end of the url where it says u=c you're going to switch it to u=f
Next, where it says CurrentConditions:|C you're going to have to change the C to F.

Month (with current day highlighted)

Command: cal=`cal`; today=`date "+%e"`; echo "${cal/${today}/33[;30m${today}33[0m}";
Refresh Time: 1800s

Near the end of the line of code it says 30m$. You can change 30 to any number from 30-37 and it will change the colour of the highlighted day.
30 - Black
31 - Red
32 - Green
33 - Yellow
34 - Blue
35 - Pink
36 - Cyan
37 - White

Upcoming months

Command:

#!/bin/sh
month=`date +%m`
year=`date +%Y`

nextMonth=$(($month+1))
if [[ $nextMonth -gt 12 ]]
then
nextMonth=1
year=$(($year+1))
fi
cal $nextMonth $year

nextMonth=$(($month+2))
if [[ $nextMonth -gt 12 ]]
then
nextMonth=1
year=$(($year+1))
fi
cal $nextMonth $year

Refresh Time: 1800s

I tried breaking the code up into sections so it makes sense to add or remove months.
The first section is just setting it up.
The second section displays the next month.
The third section displays two months ahead.

Time

Command: date '+%l:%M'
Refresh Time: 1s

If you change the l to I it will show the hours as 02 instead of just 2.
You can add :%S before the ' to add seconds.
Also, %p will show whether it is am or pm.

Battery

Command:

#!/bin/bash
asbreg=`ioreg -rc "AppleSmartBattery"`
maxcap=`echo "${asbreg}" | awk '/MaxCapacity/{print $3}'`;
curcap=`echo "${asbreg}" | awk '/CurrentCapacity/{print $3}'`;
prcnt=`echo "scale=2; 100*$curcap/$maxcap" | bc`;
printf "%1.0f%%" ${prcnt};
#EOF

Refresh Time: 60s

There are obviously way more things you can do with GeekTool. These are a few of the common things I found by doing some simple searching. Enjoy!

How often do you change the batteries in your television remote control? Yeah, basically never. But

How often do you change the batteries in your television remote control? Yeah, basically never. But that’s a tribute to how efficient the device is and not a reason to overlook this development. NEC is showing off a remote control that uses no batteries. Power is generated using the piezo effect that occurs when a button is pushed. That is to say, when a crystal is compressed it emits a tiny bit of electricity which is harnessed and used to power this device. This is the same principle that is used in the electricity producing sidewalks tested in Japan.

It’s pretty phenomenal that they can run the device using this method. Right now there’s only a handful of buttons but we’re sure there’ll be advances in the technology. There’s a ton of use for this if it can be miniaturized. It is using radio frequency instead of infrared, making it a useful development in wireless doorbells, garage door openers, key-less entry fobs for your car, and many more applications.

I manage to get Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson to sit for a portrait session and I’m thrilled. We’re in the woods, and I have beautiful light and mise en scene. I set them up, but when I try to take pictures, I discover that my camera doesn’t have a battery or a memory card. I run back to the Times, asking Jeff and Hiroko if I can borrow one of theirs, frantically trying to find one, but no one has one. Lou and Laurie are trying to be patient with me, but their patience is wearing thin. I’m mortified.
The guys at Project Wolf Dragon have been kind enough to send me one of their new PCB Lite Lipo Voltage Monitors to review and test. What’s it do? It checks the voltage of your lipo while in use, and alerts the user before an the battery drops below the 3v per cell threshold (saving your battery from sure doom). How does it work? How well does it work? Why should I buy one? Well, hop on over to the review and check it out for yourself!

Everyday? When battery flat? or Partial flat?

Of course, the next question is how long will the battery last?

1 year? 2 year? or lifetime?

Hee hee… most of the time the battery last about 2 years… that is base on my experience. This is about 500 charge. Of course, it also depends on your battery life span.

As long as there is electrical supply to the battery, it is consider as charging. Even the charge is for 1 second.

Nowadays, the design of battery has improved, you can do many partial charge. However, I will let my notebook battery go almost flat and do a full charge once in awhile. And when you are using electrical supply, unplug the battery.

Hope the above gives you better clarity of your notebook battery charging… similar to handphone battery too.
