By Kyle Bauer

While I wouldnt call this part 4 of my blog, I still have a couple blurbs on today.

Today is the Bayou Classic. It is currently in the second quarter on NBC.

This game is usually poorly played football. A form of football that seems slightly lower than division 2 or 1-AA at times (it will always be division 2 and 1-AA to me). Despite that I still enjoy it very much. Like the Army-Navy game, which is usually also brutal, there is an aesthetic to this game that I can’t deny. Such as I talk about holiday tradition, I seem to be decorating the tree every year while watching the Bayou Classic and Florida-Florida St. The Bayou Classic is a symbol of the holiday season to me. That is why I’m able to look past the brutal, brutal, awful brand of football. It’s still better than most NFL games though.

I find it funny that Paul McGuire is on the coverage of this game. I had wondered what happened to him really and seeing him on this unfortunately tells me a lot. I enjoy Paul McGuire and how gruff he is. Seriously, is there a bigger curmudgeon in sports commentary than McGuire? He is so angry all the time and that is what I love. He gets pissed when teams suck or players do something stupid. Maybe he’ll have a stroke before the game is over.

OH MAN GRAMBLING JUST SCORED USING THE WILDCAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Friday afternoon, the UNC Dance Marathon reached their goal of signing up 1,600 dancers to participate in the 2010 UNC Dance Marathon, despite a hurricane that forced committee members to change up their usual Pit routine. On Friday night, they celebrated.

Battle of the Bands, held at Players on Nov. 13, gave local bands an opportunity to compete for a chance to perform at the marathon, and newly recruited dancers to choose their entertainment for their 24-hour stand for the kids in February.

This year the competition featured the three local bands, Vintage Fresh, Carolina Blues and Thelonius Funk. The band Tripp kicked off the night’s musical festivities but did not compete as past wins had already claimed them a spot at the marathon.

While the bands played and dancers clamored for spots on the dance floor, students voted for the group they felt would be most successful in keeping the dancer’s most motivated in February. Bands were rated on a scale of 1 to 10, and each person was given one vote unless they voted on a 1, 5 or 20 dollar bill, which earned them 2, 5 or 20 votes respectively.

While all performers contributed to the funds raised it was Carolina Blues which garnered the most votes earning them a coveted spot in the entertainment lineup for the 2010 UNC Dance Marathon. All proceeds from the event will go to the final fundraising total for the marathon in February. This money in turn will benefit N.C. Children’s Hospital.

Chicago was a major player throughout those decades. It was a time when jazz, rock and roll, country and western, folk, blues, and R & B flowed through the streets of Chicagoland.

Much has been written about the national and international talent of that time, but not enough has been written regarding local music scenes.

This story focuses on the city of Chicago (along with its suburban club scene) and the homegrown performers who made the 1960’s and 1970’s one of the most electrifying and memorable periods in music history.

Some of those players went all the way to the big time, while others made their mark and disappeared. But they all made a difference in their own way, and for those who were there, it is a time they will never forget.

This year’s Dancer Recruitment Week, Nov. 9-13, was proof of the dedication of students at the Unive

This year’s Dancer Recruitment Week, Nov. 9-13, was proof of the dedication of students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to the patients and families at N.C. Children’s Hospital. Registration closed Friday, Nov. 13, with 1,600 dancers committed to taking a 24-hour stand For the Kids at the marathon in February.

Throughout the week, the presence of UNC Dance Marathon was evident throughout the UNC-CH campus. Despite the seemingly incessant rain that challenged committee members to come up with recruitment efforts slightly different from the usual craziness of music and dancing in the middle of the Pit, students were still eager to register and commit not only to standing for 24 hours, but also to raising the a minimum fundraising total of $150.

Members of every committee put in incomparable energy and countless hours of preparation to make Dancer Recruitment Week such a success. “All of the committee members were so influential in this accomplishment,” said Morale Chair Leigh Rolandelli. “Morale visited many different places on campus in order to recruit a wide variety of students. We visited the dorms, danced at the gyms, paraded through the quad, recruited in the dining halls and danced in the Pit.”

Fliers were posted in classrooms and dorms across campus the week before the official Dancer Recruitment Week to get the word out early and to encourage potential dancers to start thinking about the commitment of registering to dance. Throughout Dancer Recruitment Week, small additions — from Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the Pit to the all-committee tie dye extravaganza Tuesday afternoon to the legendary grape costume and other unusual clothing donned by members of the Morale Committee — made the excitement even more intense.

Though this year was still filled with the usual excitement of Dancer Recruitment Week, a special effort was put forth to emphasize the commitment that is made when dancers register for the marathon. “We had lots of games, costumes, music and ice cream in the Pit, but we were also able to communicate the purpose of UNC Dance Marathon to a lot of students,” Rolandelli said.

And what compels dancers to make such a commitment? “I heard Dance Marathon is a great way to raise money, give back to the community and have fun,” said Jordan Baskett, a first-year student who registered to dance last week. “I signed up to dance because I wanted to contribute my time and energy to a wonderful cause, as well as to get the experience of standing on my feet for 24 hours! I want to be a part of making someone’s life better.”

The week concluded with the Battle of the Bands competition Friday night at Players where dancers and other supporters of UNC Dance Marathon selected the band that will perform at the marathon.

“I am so thrilled that there are so many students taking a stand For the Kids.” said Taylor Scott, the Overall Coordinator for UNC Dance Marathon. “Dancer Recruitment Week was an amazing testament to the commitment of all the committee members who have been working so hard since September to support the patients and families of N.C. Children’s Hospital. It was an incredible demonstration of students coming together to unite under one cause. I am so excited to be moving forward to the marathon with so many eager and excited dancers, new and returning.”

Come have a say in the entertainment choice for the 2010 UNC Dance Marathon. To conclude Dancer Recruitment Week, the UNC Dance Marathon will host a Battle of the Bands competition Friday, Nov. 13, at Players from 9 p.m. until midnight. The winner of the competition will perform at the marathon in February.

Last year’s reigning champion, Tripp, will kick off the competition, and other bands, including Vintage Fresh, Carolina Blues and Thelonious Funk will follow.

Crowd members will rate each band on a scale of 1 to 10, and the ratings will be averaged to determine a score for each band. The band with the highest score will be announced at the end of the event.

While each person is only allowed to give one rating per band, there is a way to make the ratings count more than one time. If it is submitted on a $1 bill, the rating will be counted twice. Ratings written on $5 bills will be counted 5 times, and so on, based on the value of the bill. This is an exciting way to give your favorite band an advantage while simultaneously supporting the patients and families of N.C. Children’s Hospital.

So, dancers, come pick your entertainment for the marathon, and spend a Friday night For the Kids.

For additional information about the Battle of the Bands competition, contact Mary Laurence McMillan, the 2010 UNC Dance Marathon Entertainment Chair, at mlmcmill@gmail.com.

The authors and presenters have been, without exception, engaging and professional to the last. We’d also like to extend a special note of thanks to our virtual attendees, who have kept the discussions alive with insightful commentary, and their openness to explore issues across disciplines.

There will be no new content uploaded to the site after Friday 30th October, but there is still much to discuss.
By Paula Bowles Welcome to the second week of the Wiley-Blackwell Virtual Conference. The first day

Welcome to the second week of the Wiley-Blackwell Virtual Conference. The first day back has started with a keynote speech from Peter Ludlow (Northwestern University) entitled ‘Virtual Communities, Virtual Cultures, Virtual Governance.’ Conference delegates also had the opportunity to meet Peter at the Second Life Cocktail Bar.

There were two other papers on Monday’s session Adam Brown’s (Deakin University): ‘Beyond ‘Good’ and ‘Evil’: Breaking Down Binary Oppositions in Holocaust Representations of ‘Privileged’ Jews’ and ‘A Hybrid Model of Moral Panics: Synthesizing the Theory and Practice of Moral Panic Research’ presented by Brian V. Klocke (State University of New York, Plattsburgh) & Glenn Muschert (Miami University).

In addition Wiley-Blackwell’s Vanessa Lafaye held a publishing workshop entitled ‘The Secret to Online Publishing Success.’ As you can see, this week promises to be as exciting and innovative as the previous one. All of the papers and workshops from last week are still available to download from the conference site, and both the ‘battle of the bands’ and the opportunity to contribute a ‘winning comment’ remain.

The first week of the conference has come to an end, and the final day has included two exciting papers, as well as a publishing workshop. The first paper entitled ‘Full Disclosure of the “Raw Data” of Research on Humans: Citizens’ Rights, Product Manufacturer’s Obligations and the Quality of the Scientific Database’ was presented by Dennis Mazur (Oregon Health and Sciences University). In his lecture, Mazur highlights the difficult and contentious issues involved in human testing, particularly the tensions between participants and drug manufacturers.

The second paper also takes an interdisciplinary approach to medical matters. Eileen Smith‐Cavros (Nova Southeastern University) lecture entitled ‘Fertility and Inequality Across Borders: Assisted Reproductive Technology and Globalization’ looks at the emotive issue of assisted reproduction. By surveying existing literature, Smith Cavros is able to look in detail at some of the many issues which impact upon reproduction.

Together with these two papers, Duane Wegener’s (Purdue University) publishing workshop: ‘Top 10 mistakes New Scholars Make When Trying to Get Published’ marked the end of the first week. Enjoy the weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

[Saturday 24th October]

B.O.T.B. Semi-Final – Fort Bar

During the first two tracks (All That Remains & My Guts) the sound levels were all muddled and it was hard to hear the guitar over the drums and vocals. Believe we held it together through the third, more straightforward, untitled love song. Come time for ‘Holy Man’ and I had sorted all issues and was able to enjoy playing. It went well. I guess the only reason I even judge myself is because of the competition. Thank god that’s over and we can all get back to reality!

A lot of positive feedback from the people (thank you all very much, I’ll be in touch) but no progression for Electro/Sexual. We will be working on building the band up in the next few weeks and taking it onto the streets of N.I. Booyakasha!

For B.O.T.B. this is the end of the line =D

Goodluck to Mike and Tom.
