The 2009 world finals is today in Volkswagenhalle, Braunschweig, Germany.

Crews I am looking out for are:

Let’s see if Formosa can repeat and get into the final 3 like in 2008. If it does, it officially moves Taiwan b-boys into the international realm.

Schon seit 20 Jahren drehen sich die Breakdancer für diesen Wettkampf auf dem Kopf: das Battle of the Year. Das internationale Tanzfestival startet bereits am 12. Oktober 2009  mit einer Ausstellung anläßlich dem 20 jährigen Jubiläum im Braunschweiger Foyer des Ärztehauses, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße 42. Dort kann der Besucher die Geschichte der anerkannten Hip-Hop Veranstaltung nachverfolgen – vom ersten Auftritt bis zu den großen Tanzduellen der letzten Jahre. Dazu werden besondere Highlights, einzigartige Breakdancer und legendäre Momente des BOTY gezeigt. Die Eröffnung mit Pressekonferenz: am 12. 10 um 19 Uhr im Foyer des Ärztehauses.

Die Ausstellung läuft vom 12. bis zum 19.10.2009. Der Eintritt ist frei.

Öffnungszeiten: Täglich von 8 bis 20 Uhr, am Samstag von 8 bis 16 Uhr.

Quer ver o que é uma batalha de dança de verdade?

A Battle of the Year (BOTY) é um evento mundial que acontece a quase 20 anos. É onde acontece a maior competição de crew de bboys/bgirls do mundo. Por alguns ele é criticado por ser um evento globalizado e comercial, deturpando a cultura Hip Hop. Balela né?! Um evento de ordem mundial só traz a disseminação de tal cultura. Mas deixemos esta discussão para quem entende de Hip Hop.

Crews de várias partes do mundo participam da competição. Apesar de ter participado em 2000 com a crew Supersonic B.Boys, o Brasil só começou a realizar eliminatórias nacionais em 2007, com a parceria firmada entre o Campinas Street Dance Festival e a BOTY Alemanha. A crew vencedora vai disputar a final na Alemanha com os outros países.

As eliminatórias acontecem em Campinas e este ano será de 5 a 7 de Setembro, contando com patrocínio e apoio do Ministério da Cultura/Governo Federal, Lei Rouanet, Prefeitura de Campinas, Secretaria de Cultura, de Esportes, Programa DST/AIDS e Assessoria do Hip Hop da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura [legal, toca aí!]. I have an ego the size of the skydome.  Whenever I write or post something I assume that all 5oo of my ‘friends’ are reading my shit.

So assuming everyone’s been following, it’s become obvious that I miss my old city.  She’s all I think about lately.  Sadly, it’s not my ‘friends’ I really think about.  It’s the city herself.  And all the shit that gives her booty pop.

So THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE!  I don’t ever have to come home, I can YOUTUBE Toronto shit all day, all night.  Which has been the steez-oh lately.  (Hipster-ville, Pilipinas has been pretty lame-oh to me lately and fuck it, there’s a typhoon outside).

Today’s post is something I’ve been searching for for years since the first time I saw it.  Probably in ‘99.  This clip is from the performance segment of the 1999 Battle of the Year in Europe when legendary Toronto B-boy crew, BAG OF TRIX took the title.

Amazing pride when I first saw this and learned they won it all.  I remember thinking “YES!  now the world can see the styles emerging from Toronto.”  Styles that Bag of Trix and other crews of the time pioneered, revolutionizing the way the city and anybody else on the planet who knows shit about boogie-ing, boogied.

Nobody was doing routines like these guys.  They were not only technically complicated, but they showcased PERSONALITY.  Something I always find lacking in not just dancers, but almost EVERYTHING these days.  Most of all their routines were CLEAN.  Well rehearsed and down-pat.  They could slow them down and tweek them out or perform them at amazing speed, according to the music.  Brilliant.

These guys were the kings of ‘tricks’.  An exaggerated smile, a hand sliding across the floor, coming back again, and slipping through the other elbow.  Keeping it there on point with the rhythm, add a little something like sticking out the pinky.  Spinning half way on your heels, bring it back again, dropping down to the floor, and coming back on the toe-tips of one foot while holding the other out i1n your hand.  These little gestures, when woven together formed a style that nobody in the world scene was coming close to at the time.

The rest of the world was biting New York or doing back flips and spinning on their head for five minutes.

You’ll see shades of Bag of Trix in a lot of the street dancing today, especially in routines.  But even today, you’ll seldom see the originality and attention to detail Bag of Trix showed in the 90s.  They’re still ahead of their time.

Back in the day, Glizzi was my hero and I bit pretty much everything he did.  A bunch of them crashed the stage at my high school talent show while me and my buddies were performing and I almost lost it.  Something I’ll never forget.  I was glad to be exposed to such brilliance in my formative years.  I can say that the style had a great deal to do with shaping my personality and sense of humour.  And I made a shitload of friends (and enemies) doing it.

Perhaps the most important influence and the best thing about Bag of Trix was their diversity.  They were literally a Bag of Trix.  Dudes, with varied skin-tones and personalities, representing different parts of the city, coming together to get down.  A sentiment symbolized in their hand-sign:  two hands locked in a clasp.

When these guys came on RAPCITY for the first time and Micheal Williams (or was it Master T?) introduced them, it wasn’t a month before nearly every Filipino kid in the city was trying to drop needles like Gizmo.

Unfortunately, even with all that influence, like so many amazing acts from my pretty city, Bag of Trix never really got their just due.  So hopefully after the 500 or so people I know (or don’t know, really) read this, folks will start to recognize.

Japan and Korea have dominated this past decade. Let’s see if the other Asian countries can consistently get to the final four.

As some of you may know I have been dancing Hip Hop/ Street dance since 2006 at the TenDance Dance and Ballet school in Berlin. Quite often it happened to me when I told someone about my hobby that he or she thought I do breakdancing, although Hip Hop and Breakdance is not the same. These are two different styles, but both do belong to the hip hop culture. Just the music you use for dancing might be similar in some way. That is why I’d like to inform you about some different styles of dancing today. There are so many that I couldn’t tell you exactly how many. Some of them have really funny names. But just go on reading, if I’ve raised your interest.

Approximately one year ago my trainer at TenDance was Alessandro di Sazio. He is Breakdance and Hip Hop champion of 2003 and became “famous” when he took part in “Popstars – The Finals” or Dance Star 2007. Alessa actually is from Pforzheim where he was a member of the “Fanatic B-boys”, a Breakdance crew, which won the title “German Champion of Breakdance and Hip Hop” 5 times. In 2007 he came to Berlin to study Modern Dance.  He is still very successful giving training lessons in Hip Hop, Standard and Breakdance at five different schools in Berlin and sometimes dances in musicals (“Musical Fieber”)  or VIVA commercials. Furthermore, he is a very nice guy, dancing with him was fun and every time something different. One day he told us we would do “popping” today (we had been five or six girls taking part in that lesson) and none of us knew what he wanted to tell us.

Popping (also called Electric Boogie or Robot Dance) is a kind of dance where especially “mechanical” moves are used, looking like a robot’s moves.based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body. For mereally exhausting because you must have control of every single muscle. Locking often comes with Popping, but is a bit different. It consists of making gestures and moving like a marionette. These two styles have its origin in California, USA. Actually, they are classical style-pantomimes of Marcel Marceau’s school and were very popular at the beginning of the 80’s. Even Michael Jackon’s popular Moonwalk belongs to this kind of styles and is actually known as Backslide, developed by the Californian Crew “the Electric Boogaloos”.

Breakdance or B-Boying is the third style of Breakdance. It consists of two basic elements: “Powermoves” and “Styles”. Powermoves are turns on different parts of the body (i.e. on your head). Styles are more about dancing and not acrobatics. It is distinguished in “Footworks” (steps)  and “Freezes” (where different moves were held in one position). As you can imagine it is developed on the streets of South Bronx and Manhattan, NYC, in the 1970’s by the Puerto-American and Afro-American youth. Besides Hip Hop music, Funk and  Pop are also used for dancing.

So now you’re a little bit informed about Breakdance, but there are many more things to tell. If you like to know more about, just ask or maybe try yourself and take part in a Breakdance lesson. For sure it is interesting too if you visit one of the Breakdance tournaments, the so-called battles. The world’s biggest Breakdance battle is “the Battle of the Year” (short: BOTY), which takes place in Germany every year.

Pour la 3ème année consécutive, le BOTY s’organise d’abord sous forme de préselections. Ce week-end, c’était au tour de Lille de sélectionner les crews qui iront à Montpellier pour représenter le Nord au BOTY France.

Les 4 crews ayant été retenu pour les battles à l’issu des shows sont: Phase T (qui ont également remporté le prix de meilleur show), 1er avertissement, Total Feeling Crew et Breakeurs2bank. Le seul show que j’ai vu étant celui de B2B au training, je ne peux pas donner mon avis sur ceux-ci. D’après les premiers retours, les shows selectionnés furent les meilleurs parmis ceux présentés. Bon là, j’ai vu les vidéos. Et je peux te dire que même si j’y étais pas, la finale ça devait être chaud bouillant. Des beaux passages des 2 côtés, de l’engagement, des bonnes combis (celle avec Lil’kev qui part à la fin j’ai bien kiffé) et un breakeurs2bank avec un niveau international ! Ils ont bien su répondre à Phase T malgré la différence de niveau sur le papier. Demi-finale et finale confondues, je félicite b2b (même si mon avis vaut pas grand chose à part des clous) et je suis confiant pour la suite à Montpellier. Je pense même qu’il y aurait moyen pour eux de faire quelque chose. A suivre…

Je ferais pas un résumé plus complet étant donné que je n’ai pu malheureusement y aller. Mais je te laisse quand même la vidéo de la demi-finale et de la finale. Je te laisse admirer. Prochain rendez-vous avec le BOTY: le 9 mai à Montpellier.

INTERVIEW with Jheric Hizon – part two

KB: How long have you been preparing for BOTY Canada?

JH: We’ve been preparing for it for almost a year now!!!!

You go to the World Finals on October 18th in Volkswagen Halle in Germany. NON has dedicated themselves for this moment. What do you expect from this competition in terms of reaching new levels as a bboy crew and being part of the bigger international bboy community?

Going to battle of the year were going to go there repping canada and were going to rep canada well. We have a good routine and hopefully the judges will like it that were good enough to make top 4. We know that the level of competition is amazing out there so we really just have to be on point when we’re there, and we have battled good crews in the past so we know that we measure up pretty good. Being at boty will just make us better bboys because the energy level will just sky rocket being with the top crews from around the world.

What do you think it is about bboying that attracts individuals from all different cultures?

I think its the rawness of the culture of bboying that attracts a lot of the other countries and people to bboying and also to push yourself to your own physical limits while doing it with style and grace… and the togetherness of different cultures coming together to battle each other without anyone actually dying lol!! (youknowhatimean)

NON is a multicultural crew. What has influenced your style and movement?

As we all know breaking originated in the bronx new york I would say that we embraced their culture… and my major influences were crews like the Rock Steady crew and New York City Breakers. I think its more of our work ethic that we bring to the table when we get together to practice or when we battle… we practice hard and battle even harder.

Which crews do you want to battle?

Definitely the Koreans or the Japanese just because we want to know how well or how bad we do. But most likely we will battle anyone who gets in our way!!! We would like t battle them all.

What lies ahead for NON after the BOTY?

More shows and more training and more competition… right now NON is riding high with the title but we try to stay humble we listen to what others tell us and we take what judges have told us in the past and try to just make ourselves just all around better dancers/bboys

Why isn’t Canada buying into BOTY as much as I thought they would?

I’m not sure why Canada isnt buying into boty. I cant speak for other Canadian crews, but as far as NON is concerned we just want to get out there and maximize our potential as a bboy crew. Right now we’re the big fish in the small pond and we want to be able to swim with the rest of the best and being in boty Germany I think we’ve proven that we can and we are!

I think to keep boty Canada going, crews need to step up, but like I said, I don’t know what the other crews are thinking. Maybe boty is not in their minds at all…who knows? But its such a good opportunity to be a part of it, just to be standing and competing and meeting other bboys you only get to see on videos on you tube.

The hype around bboying has never been higher. Transcending politics, geography, language and borders, breakdancing, or b-boying, has become the global phenomenon that everyone wants a piece of. Bboys and bgirls in community centres and nightclubs in every direction are breaking new limits in the art and discipline of movement. What began in 1980’s South Bronx has grown to reach every continent.

Battle of the Year (BOTY) is the World Cup of Bboying and it began in 1990. This is the competition that attracts thousands of bboys, bgirls, hip hop heads and fans to the new international bboy headquarters! The preliminary competitions are held in 33 countries with the Finals held at the Volkswagenhalle, Braunschweig, Germany. Doc feature film, “Planet B-boy” by director Benson Lee dives into the international culture of bboying telling the stories of bboys and bgirls from around the world, and brings it together at the Battle of the Year.

Battle of the Year Canada finally joined the preliminary circuit in August 08. Vancouver’s Now Or Never (NON) crew represents Canada for the first time at BOTY International Finals and is heading to Germany on October 18th.

Current members include bboy how (Jeri), bboy G (jay), bboy eloquence (jhaymee), bboy Twist (jheric), bboy Savage (victor), bboy Trickey (colin) bboy Jax(jackie), bboy Mugg(Kenny), bboy Bminus (Brian), and bboy Sniper (York).

Jheric Hizon joined NON for the World Hip Hop Championships in Los Angeles ‘07, where they came in sixth. At this year’s competition in Vegas, NON finished second, next to knuckleheadzoo (aka super crew of mtv”s America’s best dance crew). Also the founding member of Dead Reckoning Crew, Jheric is prepared. He gave me the run down about the crew, what they have been doing to prepare, what he expects in Volkswagenhalle, and where they go next.

KB: How was the BOTY Canada competition?

JH: There were only two crews that entered boty canada this year it was NON and another crew that was put together from 3 different crews in toronto..its too bad that most of the crews did not enter, either they werent prepared or they just didnt bother entering there was a two on two competition and most of the major crews in toronto entered that one. either way NON won the first ever battle of the year canada..hopefully more crews will follow in the next year( if they decide to hold boty again)

The competition wasnt too bad we definitely had our shit together we came fully prepared we won the best show for the showcase part of the competition and then we beat out the other crew for the title of boty canada….the other team was pretty good as well but they didnt have their routine down and when it came time to battle i think we shook them up with our routines and commandos cuz they tried to interrupt our runs by jumping in and out of the battle (not doing proper commando styles) yeah they were pissed off lol!!

What can you say about the caliber of talent in Canada? How do we measure up at the international level?

The calibre of talent we have in canada is incredible we just have to go out there and make a name for ourselves by hitting up international jams. There are a few bboys/Crews that make noise outside Canada (Casper, Dyzee and his crew Supernaturalz, NON). We try to do the same by competing against the best of the best out there… we don’t always win but we sure leave a presence at the end.

On an international level we’re up there its just there’s not enough of us doing it and trying to make it happen. That’s what NON is trying to change…. we want to encourage the young gens by stating that with hard work and dedication you can achieve success in what you do. It might take time but it will happen eventually!

Breakdancing has truly evolved and this video from Battle of the Year 2007 is a fine example of that. Featuring Korea’s Morning of Owl- no need to pump up the volume on this one…

Dalle nove crew aderenti e 400 visitatori dell’esordio, si è passati a un centinaio di crew partecipanti e a circa 12 mila visitatori.

Il BOTY (Battle Of The Year) è così diventato un evento sempre più internazionale e popolare. L’obiettivo degli organizzatori è di riunire i migliori e più innovativi b-boy per essere il più grande palcoscenico della cultura hip hop, offrendo a tutti i partecipanti l’opportunità di esprimersi in un contesto dove regnano la pace e la lotta al razzismo.

Il BOTY non si preoccupa solo di supportare i b-boy di talento ma anche di dare ai giovani la possibilità di essere creativi e di mostrare le proprie doti in altri settori come l’amministrazione e il management..

May 28, 2008 was the vernissage(opening) of my solo exhibition for the Battle of the year festival in Montpellier. The opening was a great success !! the gallery was packed, the mayor of montpellier came to give an opening speech as well as the Minister of culture and Minister of sport for the region and Thomas from Attitude.

The exhibition was in the gallery St. Ravy for one week, great gallery and the prints were incredible!!
We chose to use a sublimation process whereby the images are printed/bonded directly to an aluminium sheet giving beautiful results. Really it has to be seen to be believed !

Scotty76 ist so etwas wie die Barbara Schöneberger des HipHop. Er breakt, malt und jetzt rappt er auch noch! Ohne Zweifel zählt er zu den kreativsten Köpfen im Business und hat gleich in mehreren Disziplinen neue Maßstäbe gesetzt. Um den Leuten einen Eindruck über sein bewegtes Leben zu geben, hat er nun seine DVD “Scotty’s World” bei Deluxe Records veröffentlicht.

Geboren wurde Scotty im Jahr 1976 in Halle/Saale, woher sich auch der Zahlenzusatz 76 in seinem Namen herleitet. Nach dem Umzug nach Heidelberg veränderte sich sein Leben schlagartig. Rapper Torch lud ihn dort zu seinen sagenumwobenen Hauspartys ein, er tanzte als Member der legendären Point Blank Breakers mit Steve und Gee One auf Jams und begann mit Graffitimalen. Aus einfachen Tags entstanden schnell farbenfrohe Pieces, an der sich noch die ganze Welt erfreuen sollte. Von Heidelberg bis Hongkong kennt man seine Crew The Phunk Masters (TPM) und besonders bei der aufkommenden Rapszene in Deutschland wurden Scottys Artworks zu einer festen Hausnummer. Ob als Gestalter der Plattencover von Cora E und den Massiven Tönen oder als Breaker und Sprayer in Musikvideos von Afrob bis Zeb-Rock-Ski – an Scotty ist einfach kein Vorbeikommen. Überhaupt mutiert Scotty allmählich zum Liebling eines jeden HipHop-Musikers. Die alten Veteranen wie KRS-One feiern ihn ebenso wie Freundeskreis oder Sido.

1993 war er Mitbegründer der Breakdanceformation Southside Rockers, die mit ihrem ausgefeilten Style nicht nur bei dem berühmten Breakdance-Wettbewerb Battle Of The Year für ein gesteigertes Level sorgten, sondern mit ihrem Track Rock On sogar einen Charterfolg feiern konnten. Auch mit dem Malen ging es munter weiter: Return 2 Zero (R2Z), Time To Bust (TTB) oder Kings of Town (KOT) sind nur einige der Crews, mit denen er seinen Namen weiter brandmarkte.

Nebenbei sei erwähnt, dass zum Beispiel das Aggro-Tattoo von Sido oder das Tommy-The-Clown-Logo von Sir Scott stammen. Nach dem Umzug nach Stuttgart hat sich Scotty mit seinem Shop Artistik World ganz auf Air- und Paintbrush konzentriert, wobei er auf enorme Resonanz gestoßen ist. Neben Naomi Campbell sind unter anderem Xavier Naidoo, Justin Timeberlake und Kevin Kuranyi stolze Besitzer eines seiner individuellen Shirts.

Scotty ist ständig in Bewegung. 2001 tanzte er mit den Assassins, 2004 mit seiner Crew Stuttguards und 2008 ist er als Mentor der Seven-Eleven-Crew Begleitung auf der Dynamite-Deluxe-Tour gewesen. Mit dem Titel So Fresh ist nun auch Scottys erstes eigenes Rapvideo fertig. Wohlgemerkt rappt er dabei selbst! Wer sich also in die kreative Welt des Scotty entführen lassen will, der sollte sich unbedingt seine neuste DVD mit allen Infos zu seiner Lebensgeschichte und seinem Lifestyle sichern!
