Looking back through some old articles I came across this list of the best single player games on PS3: Linkage.

This list was only written in April and yet the time since has probably been the best 6 months of my gaming ‘career.’

Not only have some fantastic solo player campaigns been released but I have also caught up on some single player epics I missed when they came out.

I knew the list needed to be extended and improved, as too many great single player games were missing.

So here you go – the top 10 is now a top 20 and any game from the initial list has it’s original chart position in brackets. You can also check out my full reviews (where possible) by clicking the title of each game:

20. PROTOTYPE

In Prototype you take on the role of Alex Mercer as he awakens during his autopsy ,wondering what the hell is going on. He quickly escapes, realising he now has various superpowers.

Mercer needs to find out what the hell has happened to him and why New York is infected with a virus that has turned half the population into zombies.

Prototype is definitely a game worth playing despite it’s various faults – it was a blast to play through if a little frustrating at times.

19. RESISTANCE 2

After saving England in the previous installment Hale is back in business to rescue the U S of A – since his incapacitation the Chimera have launched a full attack on America and Hale, as part of the Sentinal squad (made up of soldiers injected with the Chimera virus but kept under control), have to step in and stop them in their tracks.

A hard hitting but fun first person shooter.

18. MIRROR’S EDGE (10)

Mirror’s Edge wowed everyone with it’s crisp, clean graphics and it’s unique first person perspective.

The view takes a while to get used to and it had a few really annoying parts where it was difficult to time jumps etc because of the view but Mirror’s Edge is certainly worth playing through as it offers a style of gameplay that is totally unique in the current games market.

17. RAINBOW SIX VEGAS (9)

If you like your first person shooters with a bit of brain behind the brawn then Rainbow Six Vegas may be the game for you.

With a good old fashioned SAS vs Terrorists style plot and lots of fun set pieces Rainbow Six Vegas is definitely worth a shot.

16. RESIDENT EVIL 5

For all it’s faults Resident Evil 5, taken as a whole, is a brilliant game and one that I would recommend. Graphically it’s stunning and while it isn’t a hugely difficult game you’ll enjoy playing through and unravelling the story.

It survives the huge expectation of following Resident Evil 4… just. This is a game that everyone should play as Resi comes to the new generation of consoles.

15. KANE AND LYNCH (8)

You take control of Adam ‘Kane’ Marcus, a criminal on his way to death row for crimes committed in Venezeula. Kane is busted out of his prison van by a mysterious group called The7 who he worked with previously. They think Kane stole the money from their last job and stashed it somewhere.

If he doesn’t get them the money back in three weeks his wife and daughter will be killed. Kane claims he doesn’t know where it is but he does know who took the cash and will hunt them down. And so begins a thoroughly enjoyable ride into the desperate life of Kane…

14. BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY

Chock full of explosions and with some really impressive destruction of buildings etc, Battlefield: Bad Company is like a huge big budget Hollywood blockbuster.

It’s a great, mindless blast of a game. Add some memorable characters into the mix and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable, and playable, package.

13. HEAVENLY SWORD (7)

Another game that didn’t garner the respect it deserves, primarily because it didn’t live up to the pre-release hype.

If you like God Of War you will like this game as it’s similar in style but it looks gorgeous in HD and I believe did a few bits (combos/blocking etc) better than the first two God Of War games.

12. ASSASSIN’S CREED (6)

In Assassin’s Creed you play through Desmond Mile’s repressed ancestrial memories as Altair in the Medieval Holy Land (with brief interludes as Desmond struggling to find out what is going on in the present day).

You will need to research targets and carry out assassinations using a variety of options – sword, hidden blade, knife etc.

This game is great fun and I’m looking forward to the sequel which is on it’s way shortly.

11. GHOSTBUSTERS: THE VIDEO GAME

Ghostbusters: The Video Game’s plot is essentially the third movie – set in 1991 you’re a rookie who’s been drafted in to help with the ever increasing ghost workload. A huge paranormal blast sets off a chain of events that only one group of guys can deal with…

For me Ghostbusters was a short (5 hour) game that had me chuckling and geeking out despite it’s flaws – it won’t be to everyone’s tastes but it has a good single player storyline.

10. KILLZONE 2 (5)

Killzone 2’s biggest achievement is, possibly because of the brilliant graphics, sound and AI, that you feel involved and become embedded in the Killzone universal whenever you pick up the pad.

It’s not perfect by any means but it’s easily the best first person shooter I’ve played and I recommend anyone with a remote interest in this genre to check this out immediately!

9. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM

With some wonderful voice acting from the cast of the animated series, Batman: Arkham Asylum’s story moves at a good pace and familiar enemies are used to good effect throughout.

With such a vivid setting and a memorable selection of bad guys from Batman’s career it’s no surprise that Arkham Asylum is such a great game.

Despite the odds being stacked against it, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a quality title that has had a lot of care put into making it. I’d recommend this to anyone.

8. INFAMOUS

So good it’s the only game this generation I’ve played through twice (seeing it’s rating bumped from 8/10 to 9/10), Infamous is a great game.

You control Cole McGrath, a courier who just happens to be carrying a package containing an electronic bomb when it goes off, devasting the city. Somehow Cole survives and, after coming out of a coma, realises the explosion has given him electrical superpowers.

From there on out the city is your oyster and there is plenty to do as you try to track down the people behind the explosion.

7. BIOSHOCK

Bioshock has a great story to tell and it does it well with some interesting objectives and brilliantly designed levels.

There are several twists and turns in the plot, most of which are not obvious and it’s no surprise to me that a film version is in the works (although I believe currently suspended due to budget concerns).

Dark worlds like Rapture aren’t to everyone’s tastes but you really would be missing out on an awesome story if you decided not to book a trip to the underwater city.

6. GRAND THEFT AUTO IV (4)

One the biggest selling games of this generation GTA IV features the fortunes (and lack therof) of Niko Bellic – an immigrant arriving in the US at Liberty City to find empty promises and broken dreams from his cousin Roman.

As you work your way up the criminal ladder you’ll encounter all sort of dodgy characters and befriend even more.

Liberty City is a wonderful, if run down, place and Niko Bellic’s story is one you will enjoy playing through so make sure you pick this game up as soon as possible.

5. FALLOUT 3

After a tough few hours at the start you will find yourself rewarded greatly for sticking with this awesome FPS / RPG.

The story line sprawls across the world depending on your actions and you’ll find yourself taking a break from main missions to explore the wasteland or help out other characters.

I could go on and on about various things that happened and how cool it was, how great the story was or whatever.

But Fallout 3 is a game that needs to be experienced first hand and your story will no doubt play out differently to mine.

4. METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (3)

Hideo Kojima’s tale of Solid Snake’s final mission is a brilliant showcase of the Playstation 3’s power.

This is a game that often gives you three or four different ways of approaching things – whether you realise it or not.

Metal Gear Solid 4 rewards those patient enough to stick with it by giving them a great gaming experience, with some memorable boss battles, that they won’t forget.

3. DEAD SPACE (2)

Coming on somewhere between Event Horizon and Aliens, Dead Space is a third person survival horror game.

You take on the role of Isaac Clarke, a ship engineer who finds himself trapped onboard a stricken spaceship infested with an alien outbreak which is threatening to take over the ship.

This was one of the best games I played last year, it’s use of sound is immense and the fear of the unexpected they create is awesome.

I am not a big fan of horror movies or being made to jump all the time but Dead Space kept on the right side of all that by being unpredictable enough to be enjoyable as a ‘horror’ experience.

2. UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE (1)

Uncharted maps the journey of Nathan Drake as he tries to find the lost treasure of El Dorado encountering, among other things, rival treasure hunters and mercenaries.

The graphics are unbelievable and the gameplay is well paced and well thought out. The characters and story and really well conceived and Nolan North, who voices Drake, is absolutely spot on with his irreverent humour and wisecracks.

At its heart Uncharted is an action adventure game much in the vein of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider but, and I say this as a fan of both of these, it is better than either of them.

1. UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES

Uncharted 2 is a complete gaming package. There is plenty of taking out bad guys, lots of puzzles and some wonderful dialogue.

Naughty Dog really have done a great job on the voice acting and the expressiveness of the character models. It is easily the best I’ve come across (though Heavenly Sword was a close second).

I won’t spoil the story but for those who don’t know, Nathan Drake gets pulled back into that murky world of treasure hunting for hire. I loved the story of this game – with a few twists I saw coming and a few I didn’t.

If you own a PS3 there is no reason not to own this game – if you only have an XBox 360 or Wii then get yourself a PS3 Slim and enjoy one of the most finely crafted games I’ve ever experienced.

—————————————————————————————————————

So it’s a double for Nathan Drake as he takes the top two spots with his exploration adventures.

With 5 new games in the top ten it’s great to see the wide variety of game styles on offer to PS3 owners these days.

Hopefully people out there will find this list helpful – feel free to drop me some comments below on the games or if you’d have put anything else in the list?

It’s probably no secret that i’m a huge fan of the Halo series. I have blogged quite a lot about the series, from what I like, to what I dislike. A few weeks ago I bought Battlefield: Bad Company for about a Tenner. I have every reason to believe that this is the best £10 i’ve ever spent, and I now eagerly await for the sequel that’s due to arrive next year. Indeed – I now play Battlefield more than I play Halo. In fact, I last played a game of Halo four days ago, and that was a custom game. The last Matchmaking game I played was on the 26th October. A long time, considering that it’s, well, me.

But why have I made the jump from Halo to Battlefield? I’ve enjoyed Halo’s multiplayer since the days of Halo 2 – I joined Xbox Live way back in 2006, got Halo 3 the following year on release date, and have played it ever since – very rarely straying to other titles such as Call of Duty 4 or Gears of War.

By the way, if you’re one of those people who can’t accept that Halo has flaws, then I suggest that you stop reading. I’m not flaming Halo, but I am criticising it quite a lot in this post.

1- Halo doesn’t immerse you

None of the Halo games immerse you in to the experience. Humanity is supposed to be getting their arses whooped by a technologically superior alliance of xenophobic aliens, but you never get that feeling. Marines who fight by your side are cocky, unlikeable, and frankly, retarded.

Where’s the fear of war? Marines will just some times walk straight in to enemy fire without any regard for their own well-being. The same applies to the enemies in Halo – while their AI isn’t quite as bad for the enemies as it is for your allies, they’re still not very intimidating enemies.

The Brutes wouldn’t look out of place if you put them in to an episode of the Power Rangers, and their dialogue is about as clichéd as it can get. If a Brute yells at you in the game, he’s probably threatening to eat you. Oh, uh no, please don’t do that? I’m more likely to laugh at something if it says it’s going to eat me, than I am to shit my pants.

Then there’s the general design of the enemies that’s the problem. Like I said earlier, Brutes look like childrens toys, Jackals look like retarded rat-birds, Grunts & Hunters are both retarded. Hunters are supposed to be difficult to fight, but all you need to do is grab an Assault Rifle or an SMG, jump over them, and shoot them in the exposed orange bit on their back.

I should also mention the sound – the sound in Battlefield completely kicks the arse of the sound in Halo. Weapons sound like actual weapons, if an explosion goes off near you, then your hearing will get muffled. I think that people grossly underestimate how much good sound can add to the experience, although I think that Martin O’Donnell composes better music.

2- The multiplayer is more frustrating than fun

This is due in part to a number of things:

Firstly, the Matchmaking system does not match players up fairly. Level 50 Generals can, and do get matched with Level 10 Lieutenants. This results in one team getting completely destroyed. It’s pairings like these that make you ask the question: How is this fair?

Secondly, the respawning system in Halo is retarded. All you have to do is watch the video below to prove my point:

In Battlefield you can choose where to spawn – so that you can at least place yourself in a safe position. It’s not a perfect system, but it works a hell of a lot better than the system in Halo does – which seems to think it’s okay to put you in front of an enemy Warthog.

Thirdly? The lag, or, more specifically, the hit detection. While this is admittedly an uncommon occurrence, this problem still rears its ugly head at the most inconvenient of times I most commonly experience this issue with the Scorpian Tank, but others have issues with all sorts of weapons. The Sniper Rifle in particular.

Additionally, we’ve got another problem that I dabbled with in my previous post: host migration. Battlefield has dedicated servers, so this is a non-issue. In Halo however? It has some adverse effects:

3- Battlefield has large scale battles that are actually large scale

The “large scale” battles in Halo are 8 v 8 affairs with up to sixteen players. That might sound like a lot of people, but Battlefield allows for up to 24 people to be duking it out with each other. What’s more? The maps in Battlefield are actually huge, and I mean enormous. The “large” maps in Halo like Valhalla or Avalanche are dwarfed in comparison.

That’s another issue with Halo – the big maps have gradually been getting smaller and smaller. Don’t believe me? Load up your copy of Halo 1 and take a look around Blood Gulch, then load up Halo 2 and look at it’s successor, Coagulation. Then load up Halo 3 and load up the successor to Coagulation – Valhalla.

The vehicle combat in Halo is one of the best parts of the series, but the maps in Halo 3 are so small that it’s hard to make a decent use of them. In fact, with the recent map packs for Halo 3, it almost feels like Bungie has completely forgotten about the vehicle combat in Halo. As someone who played Big Team Skirmish in Halo 2 for hours on end, the loss of large scale battles disappoints me. This is where Battlefield comes in.

That’s just a few reasons why i’m starting to jump over to Battlefield from Halo. It’s fun, it’s frantic, and is pretty much everything that I ever wanted from a multiplayer game. I’ll still be looking out for Halo Reach next year, but the Battlefield series is going to start getting a lot more attention from me from now on.

© 2009 David Hilton

When I was a youngster eager for amusement of any kind, Easter egg hunts were a lot of fun. The promise of reward in the form of chocolaty goodness and the competition of beating my brother and sister to more treasure strained my eyes on the search so much that I now have to wear glasses (okay genetics may also have had something to do with it…).

But now I have grown up (somewhat) and what do I find myself doing? The same bloody thing, only now I hunt goodies in video games…and it’s a lot less fun.

There’s still the so-called reward in the form of achievement points or trophies (usually if you find every single stupid hidden item) but they are really useless in both the real and game world and not nearly as good as chocolate eggs.

I could always ignore these hidden items, but once I find one or two it gets to be some sort of psychological imperative: must find pixilated treasure!

Game developers have been doing this to us as far back as I can remember. Almost two decades ago I spent hours holding space bar down on my 486’s keyboard as I looked at the endless blocky walls of Wolfenstein 3D, trying to find the secret rooms with treasure.

They hide the stuff and we seek it. I can understand it somewhat as a game mechanic to get you to explore when you really don’t need to because the gameplay mostly involves wading through enemies to the finish line.

However it can be taken to ridiculously useless lengths as it was in Assassin’s Creed where you had to find a billion flags. Even when out of frustration I purchased a guide book I still can’t find one or two of them!

And yet I wasted hours for no reward at all leaping over and over the same areas wondering how I could be so blind. At least you could kill the hidden Templars who stood robotically waiting for you to stab them.

But games get you to look for and find posters (50 Cent: Blood On The Sand), gold bars (Battlefield: Bad Company), cogs (Gears of War), taped voices (Bioshock), death cards (Call Of Duty: World At War), treasures (Uncharted) and all sorts of other useless crap you don’t need for the game.

Is that really replay value? Running around searching for sparkly bits you missed, resorting to using a guide so you at least get the achievement points or trophies you deserve for wasting your time? There should be an achievement called ‘Sucked In- We Wasted Precious Moments Of Your Life’.

That’s not to say that all hide and seek egg hunts should be banned from gaming. Prince of Persia would be missing a big chunk of its gameplay where you have to collect hordes of glowing orbs to open up new sections of the game. On second thought….maybe it’s still a good idea.

No, there are some games like Resident Evil 5, Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood, and Wolfenstein that let you actually exchange your treasure for in-game items that are useful like new or upgraded weapons and ammo. Then it makes sense to go looking for treasure because it helps you in the game.

Otherwise, stop tempting me to go waste my time looking for stupid things I don’t need! If I don’t want to look for chocolate eggs anymore then why would I want an on-screen art shot of a Nazi dagger?

Sorry, I have to bugger off and go and search the house for the TV remote I idiotically ‘hid’ somewhere so the kids wouldn’t use my HD TV…

Battlefield: Bad Company is one of those games that got lost upon release – one I started and

Battlefield: Bad Company is one of those games that got lost upon release – one I started and then never got round to playing again (mainly due to the fact that my brother and Dad had it off me for so long – yes Jonny I’m looking at you ).

Basically your character, Preston Marlowe, gets sent to Bad Company – a rag tag army squad of misfits that are sent in as cannon fodder in military operations.

This game was a near perfect playthrough after the desolate, lonely (yet amazing) story of Fallout 3. Here you’re accompanied by your three squad mates at all times – except for the obligatory ‘you’re on your own for a bit mission’ late in the game.

Chock full of explosions and with some really impressive destruction of buildings etc, Battlefield is like a huge big budget Hollywood blockbuster.

The missions themselves were quite lengthy, around 45 minutes to an hour each, so you really felt immersed in the world.

Graphically the game was good, with some great textures and a believable world. One of the few issues I had though was that all the bad guy goons only had about three character skins between them.

Gameplay wise it was business as usual for FPS action. Take out everyone and get to various markers/blow stuff up. There were a few vehicle sections that were quite cool.

I did dip into the online but I think it’s pretty much only the hardcore left playing it and so I died plenty of times as enemies waited at the spawn point to shoot you on sight

Overall Battlefield: Bad Company is a great, mindless blast of a game. Add some memorable characters into the mix and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable, and playable, package.

Rating: 7/10

It’s a familiar scenario: After making the seemingly endless trek to your objective, besting n

It’s a familiar scenario: After making the seemingly endless trek to your objective, besting numerous foes on your way, you are finally on the home stretch and boom. Headshot. In online games the sniper is always there and always ready to punish rash moves and errant mistakes.

“Dirty snipers” is the rallying cry of whoever in the house happens to be playing, or watching, as the familiar sniper rifle icon separates your username from that of the person you are currently cursing. When done badly the sniper can be the single biggest frustration in a game. Battlefield Heroes, for example, was pretty much ruined for me almost solely because of snipers.

Technically that’s not fair. It’s not the fault of players sporting the sniper rifle that they are ruining Battlefield Heroes; characters simply move to slowly. As a byproduct of the players unurgent gait across the landscape any half-decent sniper can, of course, be a persistent annoyance. The match that forever turned me against the game consisted of the large Coastal Clash map, two snipers spawn camping and multiple deaths. At this point, especially at the early levels, you are pretty much helpless if you spawn away from cover.

This is less of a problem if there is an easy method of countering a persistently pesky sniper. Team Fortress 2’s Heavy class is, unsurprisingly, a sniper magnet. He’s slow moving, large and his gun has no accuracy against far away targets. The difference between Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield Heroes is that, during those times when you find your Heavy is being consistently taken out by a sniper in the distance, the fix is surprisingly simple. In Battlefield Heroes any solution you engineer to get rid of a tricky sniper has to be done with your existing class and environment. In Team Fortress 2, however, if you have a similar sniper problem you can choose any of the other 8 classes to fix it. Particular fun can be had as the Spy as your new Sniper friend is often not expecting to be troubled from the safety of his base, at least the first couple of times you kill him.

If snipers are such a frustrating part of online games shouldn’t they just be removed? Categorically: no. As I said at the start the sniper is always ready to punish a rash move. Good, rash moves should be punished. Death is cheap in gaming with the penalty being a simple spawn timer and a reset to base. Unlike spawn campers, grenade spammers or turret hoggers the sniper enforces care and attention in an environment that breeds the opposite. Snipers bring back the risk that balances the reward. In TF2 you may find yourself legitimately having an issue with them as the lumbering Heavy, but if a sniper was giving you a consistent problem as, say, the Scout then you’re not paying enough attention to your surroundings and the means you go about completing the objective.

More importantly sniping can be a lot of fun. It’s a slightly different mindset you have to adopt to be effective with the class. Perhaps ironically, given my issues with Battlefield Heroes, the best fun I’ve had playing a sniper has come from Battlefield: Bad Company*. In Bad Company the sniper class, and in particular the ghillie suit, is fantastically realised. It was Bad Company in which I learned of the concept of safety bushes: whereas many snipers may prefer the perceived safety of a building or roof, the real thrill comes from crouching down and moving from bush to bush getting as close to the action as you possibly can. There is genuine pleasure gained from the fact that as long as nobody sees your muzzle flash you are practically invisible. There have been moments hidden away in my bush in which an enemy soldier has run directly past my ear or a tank has rolled past oblivious. A good sniping position increases the tension tenfold: death is suddenly less cheap as you’ll lose your spot but at the same time you have a limited number of times you can operate from the same place before you’re spotted.

Just a little closer.

This is the perhaps the source of the frustration, and joy, of the sniper: they are playing a different game, aloof and distant from the main ground war. It’s the ultimate griefer class of the traditional class-based shooter dynamic. Frankly, if you don’t hate them then they aren’t doing their job right.

*I’m going to lose some respect points here by mentioning I’ve never played one of the main PC Battlefield games.

Hmm…it’s been about a month since my last blog. My fight against Bak’laag has been ongoing. Just when it looks like I was going to make some major progress in my journey, Bak’laag grew a lot stronger thanks to all the trading I’ve been doing.

I managed to knock a bunch of games of my Unbeaten list, but I got a bunch of new games thanks to all the trading that I have done. Then there were the two games I bought last month: Battlefield: Bad Company and Resident Evil 5.

Bad Company is the first Battlefield game I’ve played since Battlefield: Vietnam. I was wary about getting Bad Co. because I didn’t exactly enjoy Battlefield: Vietnam a lot. Having friends to play with this time makes for a much better experience because I don’t have to worry about dealing with morons.

I bought Battlefield: Bad Company so I could help Vaikyuko get the Platinum trophy. Some of the trophies / achievements for this game are insane. They’re the type of things that should be gold trophies instead of bronze or silver. There’s the silver trophy for 10,002 kills. Vaikyuko should get that one really soon. Then there’s a bronze trophy for at least 20 squad respawns on one person in a row. You can also get a bunch of in-game awards for moving up in rank, using a weapon enough times, etc.

Vaikyuko will talk more about this game in an upcoming blog, so this is as much as I’ll say about Bad Company for now.

I finally got Resident Evil 5 last month, long after the hype about the game died down a bit. I played co-op with Vaikyuko on Veteran difficulty. I let him host the game, which meant that I played as Sheva all the way through. He had unlimited ammo and the rocket launcher, which made things a whole lot easier. He also beat the game on Professional difficulty, so I knew I was playing with someone good. I tagged along with Vaikyuko, who did most of the killing for me since this was my first time through the game and my weapons weren’t that great. I got a range of around 2-10 kills per area. I was armchair gaming my way through Resident Evil 5, but I didn’t mind. In case you were wondering, we were playing the PS3 version. We saw no need for the headset, so we communicated through in-game commands and AIM. It worked fine, although I had trouble following instructions at certain parts in the game, especially the last boss fight. I won’t go into detail because of spoilers, but we were lucky to defeat the last boss.

My thoughts on Resident Evil 5? With the addition of co-op and a bigger focus on shooting the crap out of enemies in order to move through an area, Resident Evil 5 feels like more of a third-person shooter than a survival-horror game. In fact, the plot reminds me of a Hollywood summer action movie. If you’re looking for an experience that’s like a more traditional horror game, you’ll be disappointed. Otherwise, you will find that RE5 is a decent game.

Not much has been going on in my personal life. You may remember me talking about the 3 week geology trip I went on from May 23 to June 13. I visited the Grand Canyon and a bunch of national parks in Utah in what was the most physically intense college course I’ll ever take in my life. When I wasn’t hiking, rafting, or doing other outdoor activities, I was learning about the geology of the parks. I got my grade a few weeks ago and while I didn’t do great in the class, let’s just say that I passed and got my lab science credit. I just have to pass Intro to Psychology in the fall, get another lab science credit, and I’ll be done with science requirements at my school. Yes, Psychology is a lab science at my school, but I’m not complaining.

Until next time, stay tuned.

There’s gold in them there trucks!!!

Lets get this straight from the get go, Battlefield: Bad Company is definitely not your serious, gritty story telling of unsung heroes doing their duty in war. This is, whilst realistic and action packed a more comic tale of 4 guys who just want out with some good payouts at the end. Oh, and to blow a lot of stuff up on their way.

Welcome to B-Company Solider. You, Preston Marlow have been transferred to this regiment as act of punishment. B-Company, also known as Bad Company, the place where all the misfits and bad behaved soldiers get sent. You’re the most highly expendable men within the army. With that said….your going to be joining one hell of an interesting squad.

The game begins where you met the rest of your squad, Redford, a down to earth sergeant who was switched to B Company in effect to shorten his time on tour. Sweetwater the brains and straight thinker of the group, followed by Haggard, the demolition guy, who no matter what loves to see things blowing up, that and gold.

Whilst starting with your routine sessions out on the field you and your team begin to find something more interesting about this war, and about a certain Legion of Mercenaries who are connected with a serious amount of cash in the form of Gold Bars, from here, your team go all out on their own to try and find this Legion and bag some of that golden goodness for themselves.

Its safe to say everyone is awhile of the depth in how much you can mould the environment to your playing styles, or in fact how you as a FPS gamer may have to evolve in your playing styles. Any game has ‘destructive environments’ but this is truly the game where there is no where to hide. Your first encounter with a tank will definitely be a shock to the system. Hiding behind houses and walls to reload only to have that face of the building completely ripped off my tank shells only to leave you stood there bewildered. Buildings, the ground, vehicles everything can be destroyed, you can even cut down trees with your gunfire. This is what brings a true brand new experience to both the single and multi player sides of this game.

The 7 missions are very big, and using the vehicles sometimes available will make your travels a lot more easier, all weapons are usable and easy to maneuver, but if you break them…beware for quite a long walk in some levels, to add a little exploration to the levels, hidden boxes of Gold are laid about in special places around the Single Player levels meaning you’ll have to keep a sharp eye out and be sure to explore all areas of the maps you might not normally need to go to.

The AI in this game sadly aren’t the cleverest of bunches, for both friendly and your enemies. When it comes to the harder difficulties the enemies aren’t so much hard to defeat, but more overwhelming as you fight your way through awkward positions both urban and country settings.

The friendly, being your 3 fellow team mates sometimes don’t make much of a difference in battle and you’ll find yourself doing a lot of the work, whilst they stand around like melons, at one point your fighting on your own to rescue your 3 friends, when I got them back, I couldn’t really tell much of a difference and when doing this on hard, this means you’ll be spending a lot of your game time trying to find ammo for your weapons which isn’t an easy task.

The game has plenty of opportunities to apply some stealth play to the game, sadly, things like silencers are only found on select guns, and because of the AI not being familiar with the term stealth, the moment you step into a certain radius of that enemy, they’ll always know your position, and your Solid Snake moment flies right out of the window, followed by some hand grenades and perhaps a spent magazine to fend off those coming at you.

Online play has its ups and downs. To begin with, the game so far only has one game type, Gold Rush. This is an attack and defend style game play where attackers destroy two cases of gold in each area to push the defenders back till the last 2 cases are destroyed, the defenders must hold out for as long as possible killing the attackers till the attackers reinforcements run out. This game type is fun and always sets a new challenge to each map, though we’re promised a game type ‘Conquest’ very soon.

Weapons online are the same as offline, but some must be unlocked through upping your rank in online play, every so often going up in rank will give you 1 credit which can be used to unlock a new weapon.

It’s not so much noticeable offline but online you do tend to question your weapons during battle. I’ve often found the sniper rifles to be way to slow between shots and the shots you do get off are about as useful as a water pistol. Yet I’ve had some encounters where the same rifle will deal an appropriate amount of damage. However some of them, to get the max potential, you will have to take some time to master.

The classes online are well thought out, the 5 classes, Assault, Demolition, Recon, Specialist and Support all come with 4 items to begin with, some of these items may need unlocking using credits, however each has been carefully selected so that no matter what every player is useful, to ensure strategic and co-operative team play for example Specialist classes can ‘tag’ enemies and vehicles, which then allow the demolition class to lock onto that target with their rocket launchers as a homing device. Much more choices are available provided you have the team mates to help out.

Now with a lot of games like this a popular addition is being able to take a select few of your friends online and join in a battle together, this is available as ‘Squad’ whether with friends or on your own, your team of 12 players is broken up into small ‘squads’ of 3 or 4. These are your squad members for that round, which you will be able to spawn on and talk to throughout the round. However…

Because after each round our squads are randomly selected I can set up a squad of 2-3 of my friends, and then search for a match. We will be able to play as a squad for that match. Then, I and my friends will be split up into new squads, which really isn’t what we’d intended seeing as public chat is limited to that of your squad members. So although were in the same team and playing together, where not able to communicate unless in Private chat, or were joined up in a later round.

The graphics have a very realistic tone to them, some of the areas can be very dark, and even in the sunny bright areas just seeing the enemies can be quite difficult, whether out in the open or encased in trees and shrubs.

Having said that, at some points in the game where your moving between sections of all the fun and action you’ll find yourself gazing across the giant playground at your feet, at these points your able to really take in the impressive visuals of all the levels.

Detail in the destruction is probably the most notable of things, with having a perfectly sturdy house wall one second and a grenade or artillery shell later nothing more than bricks and plaster left hanging in its wake.

Dice put a lot of work into sounds and the effects sounds have in the game. Ill say now this game should definitely be played with some surround sound equipment if you have them, as the way sounds around you and the effect of distance of where the sounds coming from is really something for Dice to boast about. A good example of this is from the radio in the vehicles, and how the sound plays out with taking fire or things exploding around you.

The Single Player side to the game only has 7 missions which can last from around 20-40 minutes each, coming with 3 difficulties, Hard will definitely keep you going at it for awhile. The online side has plenty for you to get out of it, with the 25 online ranks to achieve with XP, and all the online awards to collect the online side can keep this game in your collection for quite a long time. And if your after all those achievements, your going to have to keep going to get the Gears of War/The Club joke of attaining 10,002 kills online.

You can also track your stats with an in-depth look on your multiplayer gaming with EAs take on Bungie.net’s stats though their website.

An enjoyable game through-out the single player, the games comic take to things and the characters really bring the game to life on a story telling level, the character writing alone is more than enough to keep you coming back to the story of it, just as much as you would your favorite book.

All 4 characters you will grow to love and you’ll definitely want to hear more from them in the future. The online side, whilst having its downsides which may be fixed with easy patches, if fixed the games easily an 8.5. Yet BFBC is more than enough to keep your Battlefield joys fixed and entertained.

Many in today’s gaming scene complain about spending their money on games which just don’t deliver, especially in the Xbox Live Arcade category.

Spending 1200 MSP (Microsoft Points) on a downloadable game which offers only a few hours of gameplay and no replayability or 1600 MSP on a game which offers less just seems like a waste when you could use it on a full release AAA title.

The problem with Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) games is that they are a real hit & miss proposition and it really is a shame that many don’t get the recognition they deserve. However, here is one title that should receive recognition and much more.

• Battlefield 1943: Guadalcanal

Battlefield: 1943 released for only 1200 MSP and is worth every single point. Not only is it a fully functional 3D game but it could easily be passed off as a full retail game if a few more options were added in.

Based on DICE’s Frostbite Engine which is seen in Battlefield: Bad Company and also the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and featuring Conquest Mode which was also in Bad Company, the game sees two factions go head to head in 3 different maps for control of the 5 flags situated across each map.

It’s so familiar

It’s a familiar gametype but even though it’s the only one it’s still a hoot to play.

Three classes await you with the likes of Infantry (good for short range and against vehicles), Scout (good for long range pretty much) and Riflemen (is the in between good at almost every range). Strangely enough there is no Medic class which has been replaced by regenerating health.

The reason for this having happened is that even though the game boasts an awesome 24 total players online, having regenerative health means you can last longer in battle. Those who aren’t the best at FPS will therefore get as much out of the game as possible without constant frustration.

If you don’t like the on-foot approach there’s always the option to go by vehicle, either in a jeep or tank or take the aerial approach by flying a fighter plane over the map dropping bombs on unsuspecting enemies.

Yumm – dedicated servers

If that still doesn’t wet your whistle the game features Dedicated Servers meaning little to no latency issues!

It’s a benchmark at the moment for the Xbox Live Arcade range as many other games don’t really feature this kind of content but then again there is no Single Player in BF:1943, so this alone may put some people off.

The downside of that means this game is solely based around online multiplayer and not the offline. If you wish to play multi online with a group of Aussie gamers you will have to have a full room before being able to start a match. So be ready for online randoms with no mics or who don’t speak English.

No Single Player – bugger

Lack of single player and playing with randoms on Live will put some people off.

That being said, there’s no harm in playing with randoms because sometimes you could be the best of the pack and most times many on your team, regardless of communication, know exactly what to do.

If you jump in a jeep, others do as well. If you try to take a flag others will follow and try to as well. It’s a very straight forward game with a clear message of what you have to do in each map to win and survive.

Apart from lack of a single player and needing a full room to enjoy multiplayer with fellow friends, BF:1943 excels in raising the bar for future XBLA titles wishing to have enough cred to be worth the MSP.

EA/DICE have done a wonderful job in creating a title this worthy of purchase for the Xbox Live Marketplace and it’s almost worth a retail version.

At the moment BF:1943 is lacking in certain departments but if DICE continue to support this little gem in the long run it could easily be contender for XBLA GOTY. Let’s hope that more content is made available later down the track.

Review:
