Has Jay-Z become NYC’s leading man? I remember when I first played Jay’s “Empire State of Mind” back in August and that first guitar lick which laid directly under a solid kick drum automatically separated itself from the rest of the material on “Blueprint 3.” Al Shux, the track’s producer, knew exactly what he was doing.

Well fast forward to November 25, the track hand delivered Hov his first #1 single on Billboard’ Hot 100, it possessed Lil Mama’s irrelevant ass to hop onstage during Hov and A.Keys’ monumental performance at the VMA’s in September, became the official N.Y. Yankees World Series anthem and has everyone from Australia to the Bronx praising the Big Apple.

With that said, MSG.com is letting the people decide whether or not “Empire State of Mind” deserves the accolades of “Unofficial Anthem” status for the city of New York. On December 4th (Hova’s date of birth), MSG will air Jay’s “Answer The Call” concert from September at 10:30pm and then follow up with Frank Sinatra’s, “Frank Sinatra: The Main Event” concert from October 1974.

After the concerts, you can head over to MSG.com to vote if you think Jay’s,  “Empire State of Mind” should replace Sinatra’s, “New York, New York” as the Big Apple’s unofficial anthem. King of New York, 50? Riiiiiiiiiiiight. But hey, I still like your aggressive content. *Jay-Z Laugh* Hahhahahahahaha.

THOUGHTS????

I hear it every day. People complaining. They complain when it rains, complain when it snows, complain when its cold, complain when it’s hot. Complain about  the price of gas, complain about aches and pains, complain about everything imaginable. It is as if it is our national past time.

It is Thanksgiving. A time to give thanks for what we have, a time to stop complaining for one moment and re-acquaint ourselves with  all our blessings, as they are too numerous to even count.

If we look back into the not to distant past, we can recount countless acts of bravery, selfless sacrifice and outright personal devastation, and even death  by many of our forefathers, for the general benefit of our country and way of life.

Consider the signors of the Declaration of  Independence, committing a defiant act of treason against the British Empire, with the greatest  most formidable Army and Navy in the worlds history, knowing full well, that if this ragtag band of farmers failed to defeat this enormous armed force, they would all swing from the nearest trees. Yet this did not stop them for one moment as they valued the way of life they dreamed worthy of their dieing for. A country, a culture, a society based on freedom and ‘the pursuit of happiness’.

Not only did they not complain, they  were willing to sacrifice their wealth and power in many cases their lives, so you and I could enjoy the freedoms they won for us.

How did it work out? A few hundred years later, we evolved into the highest standard of living the world has ever known.

Yes, we enjoy the best and most  of anything this world has ever seen.

Yet we complain about the most nonsensical issues imaginable. How silly we can be.

So I challenge all my readers, consider our blessings, they are too numerous to count. Consider the enormous sacrifice so many have endured to allow us to enjoy what we have today…and give thanks.

We are the most fortunate people in the worlds history…give thanks, and maybe even carry this gratitude with us when we re-enter our daily routine, fighting our battles, remembering the signors of the Constitution, and realizing, our battles may not be all that bad after all…and maybe we should not be complaining about anything at all.

Peace my friends, have a very happy Thanksgiving….and think for a moment about all the blessings we enjoy.

“Frenemies” is a term usually reserved for shit like the The Hills (and a song on Jim Jones’ last album), but the rap game has its own collection of drama queens volatile, flip-floppy stars. Cases in point: the phony-friendship roller coaster that Jay-Z and 50 Cent have been riding over the last decade. No “Takeover” or “Ether” yet, but these two heavyweights still qualify as top-notch frenemies.

As regulars atop Forbes Hip-Hop list, you’d figure Jigga and 50 have enough in common to be buddies, but rap is a competitive sport and there’s pretty much only room for one at the top. While they’ve never all-out beefed, they’re not on that vegan steez neither—hence, frenemies. You love to hear the story again and again about how KRS-One burst on the scene in the 80’s after being initially scorched by the Juice Crew’s leaders the late Mr. Magic and DJ Marley Marl. After that, he set it off on the crew with Boogie Down Productions in what would be one of the most storied battled ever.

But fast forward to the present day. 50 Cent has been calling out Jay-Z in a number of songs and interviews in an attempted to lure his fellow Hip-Hop mogul into a lyrical championship bout.

On Beanie Sigel’s “I Go Off,” 50 Cent says, “Yeah, you changed, man. You let the money change you, Jay. You used to be from Marcy, [Brooklyn] n***a. Now you a pass the Grey Poupon a** n***a. You don’t want the shooter? I’ll take him. [laughs] N*gga, feed the wolves or else the wolves feed off you. Eat your a** alive! I live by a combat’s creed. Strategy. Your move, n***a.”

Jay-Z has yet to respond, but AllHipHop.com had to solicit the opinion of KRS-One, a man whose insights seem to know no bounds. So, the Blast Master comments on the beef, but also how it should go down, should Jay-Z and 50 lock in. Furthermore, KRS theorizes how it all could make dollars and sense for the two moguls.

Amazon UFO,Conspiracy, & Beyond 

You had to be there, that’s the general feeling after watching the film marking 10 years of the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. Either because the performances were so good that film could never fully capture the moment, such as Grinderman’s rampant 2007 set, or because eventually indifference settles in towards clips of strangers being drunk, performing covers of ‘Maps’ and making out during Seasick Steve and The Boredoms. Those are their festival stories, nobody else’s, and it’s not much different from being shown other people’s holiday photos.

This film, though, would be nothing without the fans – a collaborative effort, film by fans, artists and filmmakers has been cut together by director Jonathan Caouette, most thrillingly at the start of the film when various footage of two different performances of ‘Atlas’ by Battles build to a rowdy climax. Most of the clips are from 2004 onwards, since when the availability of relatively cheap cameras and phones and YouTube has made everyone a potential documentary maker.

ATP’s back story is covered briefly in a sequence where founder Barry Hogan watches himself being interviewed on The Culture Show. There are unanswered questions, such as how it stays sponsorship-free or how curators are chosen, but mini-manifestos from Jerry Garcia, Thurston Moore, Patti Smith and Iggy Pop certainly explain at least part of what ATP stands for – reclaiming rock & roll from big business and industry. It’s worth considering during the clips of chalets bustling with ad hoc ‘fan bands’, an idea that has since been co-opted for multinational brands’ for ad campaigns.

Audience and artists living, mingling and performing alongside each other (as Daniel Johnston, Lightning Bolt and Grizzly Bear are filmed doing) is a great part of ATP’s appeal, but it’s the action onstage that’s the most exciting here, such as a lush version of ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap’ by original festival curators Belle & Sebastian, and invigorating, intense performances by Yeah Yeah Yeahs; a ritualistic, chaotic Stooges; and furiously funky and lo-fi Gossip. Les Savy Fav, who performed at the film’s screening tour in October, bring the stage to the audience and together they sum up 10 years of ATP as good as anyone when they shout: “We were there when the world got great! Grinderman – ‘No Pussy Blues’ (Live @ ATP 2007 with Bobby Gillespie)

Jälleen kerran olimme saapuneet Mordheimin saastaisille raunioille aarteiden toivossa. Kiertelimme kortteleita wyrdstoneja etsiskellen kun  kuulimme etenemämme kadun toisesta päästä kiihkeää puheensolinaa. Jatkoimme varovaisesti mutta päättäväisesti etenemistämme ja kohta vastaan ryntäsikin muutamia vanhurskaudestaan sokeutuneita noidanmetsästäjiä. Pysäytimme heidän etenemisen nuolisateella ja ryntäsimme sitten heidän kimppuunsa. Corleonen ja Emilion lyödessä noidanmetsästäjiä vaikeuksitta maahan, suurin kiihko heistä katosi varsin nopeasti ja he päättivätkin siirtyä turvallisemmille alueille syyttelemään viattomia pikkutyttöjä noituudesta ja haureudesta ja sytyttelemään heitä sitten tuleen.

Keräsimme kohtuullisen määrän wyrdstoneja ja päätimme jatkaa raunioiden tutkimista välittömästi pienen kaupankäynnin jälkeen. Onneksemme löysimme baarista maamme miehen joka oli töitä vailla. Vaikka hän ei Il Contate Compagnian perheeseen kuulukkaan niin päätimme palkata tämän tarkka-ampujan joukkoomme.

Lähdimme alueelle jossa olimme kuulleet olevan jonkinlaisen aarteen. Kiersimme rakennuksia järjestelmällisesti läpi ja törmäsimme valtavaan elävään kivipatsaaseen. Koitimme ammuskella ja lyödäkin tuota jättimäistä patsasta mutta aseemme eivät tehneet mitään vaikutusta kyseiseen otukseen. Kun yksi uusista tiedustelijoistamme ilmoitti löytäneensä aarteen päätimme jättää kyseisen patsaan keskenään notkumaan raunioille ja lähdimme laskemaan saalista. Uusi palkattu tarkka-ampujamme väitti nähneensä rottamiehen hiiviskelemässä raunioissa ja ampuneensakin sitä kohti. Olimme kuitenkin paikantaneet jo aarteen ja niillä saastaisilla rotilla tuskin mitään homeista leipää arvokkaampaa löytyisi joten turhia aikailematta lähdimme suuren aarteen ja melko valtavan wyrdstone määrän kanssa naureskellen kohti majapaikkaamme.

Capitano Luigi Stiletto, Il Contante Compagnia

Syksyn alku Mordheimissa ei todellakaan ollut hymyillyt meille Tilealaisille vaan muut olivat kahmineet suurimmat wyrdstone saaliit. Olimme jälleen lähteneet aarteen toivossa Mordheimin synkkiin ja mädän hajuisiin kortteleihin koluamaan ja olimmekin koko joukko pahasti hajallaan kun meidät yhtäkkiä yllätti lauma verenhimoisia haltioita! Kyllä, haltioita tässä jumalan hylkäämässä kaaoksen pesässä! Ennen kuin sotilaani kerkesivät kissaa sanoa oli kaksi uutta värvättyä sotamiestä jo huitaistu maahan ja lävistetty kuoliaaksi. Lähistöllä olleet joukkoni linnoittautuivat kahteen rauniotaloon koittaen pitää puoliaan haltioiden vihaista nuolisadetta vastaan.

Toinen nuorista urhoistamme Giuseppe Greco, jäi muista eristyksiin ja joutui kahden haltia retkun hyökkäyksen kohteeksi. Onnekseen nuo kasvoilleen saadut kammottavat arvet pelottivat hienohelma haltioita niin etteivät he uskaltaneetkaan hyökätä Giuseppen kimppuun vaan hän sai aloitteen puolelleen. Samaan aikaan myös Salvatore kahden sotilaan kanssa saapui paikalle mutta valitettavasti korttelin toiselta puolelta joten heillä oli pitkä matka apuun itse taisteluun.

Toinen meidän mainioista snaippereistamme osoittautui jopa suippukorvia etevämmäksi jousimieheksi pudottaessaan yhden haltian tarkalla laukauksellaan. Suippokorvat sen sijaan ammuskelivat lähinnä muureihin tai osuivat harmittomasti haarniskoihimme.

Sitten pääsinkin itse yhdessä nousukkaamme Emilion ja sotakoirani Dimmun kanssa mukaan taisteluun. Syöksyimme paikalle sopivasti suippokorvien selustaan ja yllätimme vuorostaan heidän perinpohjin. Lähetin Dimmun nopeasti Giuseppen avuksi ja  itse lähdimme kohti päätaistelua ammuskellen suippokorvia takaapäin. Samassa myös hullu Corleone pääsi isku etäisyydelle ensimmäisestä haltiasta ja sehän tiesikin sen haltian lorun loppua.

Giuseppe sai myös toisen vastustajistaan nujerrettua ja sotakoirani saapuessa paikalle olikin voimasuhteet siellä äkkiä vaihtuneet. Mutta nuo varjosoturit eivät olleet vielä luovuttaneet. Yhä uudestaan he heittivät nuolisateen miesteni päälle ja antautuivat vielä lähitaisteluun meidän kanssamme. Ja jälleen kerran sotakoirani joutui kärsimään taistelun tuoksinnassa saamastaan haavasta. Sitten saimme kuitenkin yliotteen haltioista. Minä itse ammuin pistoolillani yhden haltioista toimintakyvyttömäksi lähitaistelussa ja hullun Corleonen kohteeksi joutui varjosoturien päällikkö ja hänen kohtalonsa oli sama kuin muidenkin hullun Corleonen uhreiksi joutuneiden. Kun vielä Filippo Marchese toimitti yhden haltian toimintakyvyttömäksi ja Salvatorekin pääsi sotilaineen taisteluun mukaan, oli se liikaa suippokorville. Varjosoturit hävisivät varjoihin yhdessä suhahduksessa ja me jäimme korjaamaan suurehkon määrän wyrdstoneja ja muuta aarretta talteen. Onneksi myös sotakoirani haavat olivat lievät mutta uudet sotamiehemme olivat maksaneet kovimman hinnan kokemattomuudestaan Mordheimin saastaisissa raunioissa.

Pitkän kuuman kesän ajan Mordheimin synkät kujat olivat liian voimakkaan mädän hajun kyllästyttämät jotta raunioiden tutkiminen olisi ollut mahdollista.  Syksyn sateiden tultua löyhkä kuitenkin kävi siedettäväksi joten suuntasimme välittömästi wyrdstone jahtiin kuultuamme huhua 3 talosta joissa piti olla melko suuret määrät wyrdstoneja ja muuta aarretta.

Valitettavasti myös Avelanserit nuo metsien hilpeät vipeltäjät olivat kuulleet saman huhun ja olivat saapuneet apajille. Vaikka vanhempi champpionini Filippo Marchese tiputti heti ensimmäisellä varsijousen laukauksellaan yhden avelancherin niin onnistui heidän miehittää yksi kolmesta huhutusta rakennuksesta. Kahdesta muusta rakennuksesta alkoikin sitten tiukka kamppailu. Hullu Corleone pistikin taas muutaman metsien miehen matalaksi ja ajoi itsensä Faustuksen, tuon avelanchereiden johtajan karkuun. Tästä huolimatta joukkoni jäi alakynteen ja usean mieheni jo kaaduttua metsä hiippareiden tarkkoihin nuoliin päätin käskeä joukot vetäytymään. Onneksemme saimme kuitenkin muutamia wyrdstoneja napattua mukaammen. Ainoaksi menetykseksi jäi uusi sotakoirani jonka haavat olivat aivan liian vakavat jotta olisimme voineet pelastaa sen hengen.

Muutamaa päivää myöhemmin olimme jälleen Mordheimin raunioissa wyrdstone jahdissa. Ja näissä synkissä raunioissa ei rauhassa voi koskaan vaeltaa vaan kohtasimme tuon jo verivihollisiksi muodostuneen vihaisen akkalauman, Sigmarin Sutturat. Etenimme pienissä ryhmissa ja päätimme koittaa murtautua neitokaisten linjojen läpi nopeasti ja tehokkaasti. Sutturat kuitenkin ryhtyivät äkäisesti vastustamaan lähentely yrityksiämme ja useampikin kahakka syntyi Mordheimin raunioille. Vaikka saimme useammankin sutturan kellistettyä niin varsin vihainen linkotuli pakotti meidät perääntymään ja tyytymään muutamaan mukaamme kaappaamaan wyrdstonen palaan. Jälleen uusi sotakoirani pääsi hengestään, varsinaisia eläinten vihaajia nämä Mordheimin kujilla hiihtelevät ryövärijoukot.

Varsin vähäisiksi jääneiden wyrdstone ja aarre saaliiden vuoksi lähdimme varsin nopeasti uudestaan raunioille suuremman saaliin toivossa. Ja jälleen kerran raunioiden tutkimus reissua saapui häiritsemään resuinen ryöväri joukkio. Olimme jo aivan Mordheimiin saapumisen aikoihin kohdanneet tuon muotitiedottomien Estalialaisten joukkion joka porhalsi meitä vastaan raunioilla. Jakaannuimme kahteen eri ryhmään aikomuksena saartaa resupekat ja riistää heiltä ne vähätkin varat millä olisivat voineet kunnon vaatetusta itselleen ostaa. Minun itseni johtama joukko joutui kuitenkin ottamaan vastaa suurimman osan Estalialaisten joukoista. Toinen ryhmämme pidettiin aisoissa muutaman tarkkaan ampuvan varsijousimiehen toimesta. Valitettavasti hullu Corleone oli juuri tuossa toisessa ryhmässä sillä me jouduimme nopeasti käsirysyyn ja hänestä olisi ollut melkoisesti apua tässä. Corleone lähtikin juoksemaan tavoilleen uskollisena kohti taistelua mutta Estalialaiset olivat valitettavasti jo kerenneet saamaan yliotteen meistä joten jouduin käskemään joukkomme perääntymään ennen kuin Corleone pääsi paikalle.

I haven’t really had much time to do all my regular Warhammer stuff the last week or so. Why this is can be revealed soon. Very soon. In the interim, though, I offer up a brief battle Brad and I had the other day. He popped around with his Ogres so I decided to give the new Skaven a run against them.

So the Ogres were a pretty standard ogre list, while the skaven list I have taken is pretty much a cut down version of the one I used at Dogs Breakfast.

The ogres took the first turn, moving forward in a V formation, with Bulls followed by Leadbelchers and then Ironguts. My Skaven were deployed with the bulk of their hitting power on the left flank, with a unit of slaves and the Globadiers on the right.

To be honest, the specific details of the battle are a haze. The Gorger appeared on turn two and tried to harry the right flank, only managing to put the hurt on the Globadiers. A unit of Leadbelchers and the Bruiser also managed to get a charge on the Plague Monks, breaking them in two rounds of combat. However, by pursuing them they were left in an opportune spot for the Clanrats to charge and overwhelm them.

The Gnoblar Trappers really failed to do anything, only drawing a 40 point slave unit away from the main battleline. The Stormvermin too contributed little to the battle, though they did soundly pummel the Bull regiment they flank charged.

Reprising its role as ‘man of the match’ from Dogs Breakfast, the Doomwheel performed amazingly. This instrument of destruction consistently put the hurt into the Ogres, either with massively powerful blasts of warplightning or with precision close combat attacks. Even misfiring once didn’t seem to phase it. I think, of any army in Warhammer, Ogre Kingdoms is the one that the Doomwheel will be able to do the most damage against. The warplightning attacks are extremely focused, doing D6 wounds on single models. Against such a small multi-wound force like the Ogres this is bad news. Ogre Kingdoms players be warned! The Doomwheel is your number one opponent in the new Skaven list.

So there wasn’t really much in this Ogre Kingdoms list the Skaven couldn’t handle. I think if Brad had attacked with a little bit more focus the result would have been very different. Obviously the Doomwheel should have been his first target, maybe keeping some Leadbelchers back to fire on it, rather than trying to bring it down in combat. When left one on one against ranked unit the Ogres did fairly well, though obviously faltered badly when Skaven flanked charged into the combat. I think some more Gnoblars might be needed to cushion the Bull units and protect their sides. Angle charging flankers off away from the Bulls, rather than destroying units.

In the end we didn’t bother totalling the results. I had lost the Plague Monks and Globadiers, while all Brad had left was a single Leadbelcher. A pretty decisive Massacre, I think you will agree.

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

North Korea is again threatening South Korea over something that North Korea is to be blamed for.

Over the years after the split in 1953, North Korea has instigated bloodshed battles with the South but in North Korea, it seems like South Korea is the one who started all. In fact, due to media that’s run by the government and huge propaganda, North Koreans believe that North Korea is very innocent and defensive and that South Korea and the U.S. are the ones preparing for a possible attack.

The recent clash at sea between the two was only about a week before Obama’s visit to South Korea. North Korea enjoys playing these psychological games which I think is redundant and very childish indeed.

Obama is in South Korea now and will meet with the president of South Korea and North Korea’s nuclear problem is going to be indeed the top issue that will be dealt in the summit.
