Seattle’s finest is reporting today that Jason Bay is “optimistic” about signing with the Mariners a

Seattle’s finest is reporting today that Jason Bay is “optimistic” about signing with the Mariners and a Twitter-like report has Marco Scutaro at the doctor this afternoon taking a physical for the Red Sox.

A few thoughts …..

The Sox don’t have a lot of options at short, and that includes Dustin Pedroia, so if Scutaro is the stop-gap, so be it. He can field his position, he has a pretty good eye, and he hits line drives. Truth be told, his 2010 contribution (.360 OBP and ~40 doubles) is likely to outpace what they got from their shortstops in 2009. But I would add that the Sox are crazy if they give this guy a third year. Scutaro is a C+ major leaguer right now and in 2012, you are probably looking at a C- player. It’s one thing to get in the way of Lowrie next year but it’s another to put Scutaro in the path of either Jose Iglesias or another opportunity. I suspect the Sox are pretty sick of eating sour SS contracts so any deal to Scutaro is not likely to have a 2012 guarantee.

Joe Urbon, Jason Bay’s agent, said today that the Sox are still in contact with his client despite what was implied in Ken Rosenthal’s speculative and poorly-sourced piece last week. Any chance Urbon was the source of the Seattle Times story?

For my money, I prefer Bay to Matt Holliday. It might be narrow-minded and in the minority here, but it means something to me that Bay has proven he can do it in Boston. Other guys have failed that test and I don’t think you can just dismiss Bay’s passage as an incidental. Moreover, Holliday’s 2009 stint in the AL is hardly a ringing endorsement of his ability to adapt. And let’s be frank here ….Holliday has thrived in Denver and St. Louis ….two of the most laid back environments in baseball.

Dave Cameron at USS Mariner, an expert on the Mariners, is all lathered up over the Bay story, but he doesn’t think it passes the smell test. Dave’s view ….signing Bay would disrupt Seattle’s budget and run counter to the club’s strategic direction. Cameron might blow a gasket if this one proves to be true.

If Bay bolts to Seattle and Lowrie/Everett are given the SS job, the Sox will have the 18th and 20th picks in next years draft. Plus their own pick in the first and a couple of sandwich picks. That is a lot of ammo, although the Sox would lose their own pick if they sign a Type A like Lackey or Holliday. Too bad the Sox lost their scouting director Jason McLeod today ….Sox might be busy next June.

If Bay is out the picture, which is a big if, all eyes turn to Matt Holliday. This doesn’t sit well with me. If you normalize Holliday’s numbers for Coors Field, particularly in 2007,you are talking about a nice player, but one more akin to JD Drew than Manny Ramirez. Yet his agent, Scott Boras, is talking Manny-type salary expectations. 5/90? No frigging way do I pay that for Matt Holliday, a guy who is a career .800 OPS guy on the road. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to give him Drew’s 5/70 given the fact that JD is a better outfielder and a better baserunner. In fact, if Boras demands 5/90, I would take my chances pairing Jeremy Hermida with a right-hander who crushes left-handers and use the extra money on Roy Halladay or John Lackey. (Anyone know where we can find that right-hander?)

So the Braves signed Billy Wagner yesterday and today they inked Tak Saito. Ten million for those two? Is it too late to interest them in Ramon Ramirez? Perhaps for Matt Diaz? There is your LF platoon ….lefty-masher Diaz and Jeremy Hermida.

Scutaro without Bay and Holiday …..here is the lineup …..Ellsbury, Pedroia, Martinez, Youkilis, Ortiz, Lowell, Drew, LF Platoon and Scutaro. Not bad if everything clicks. But frightening if Ortiz struggles, Lowell limps around again, Kotchman gets 75 starts, and Hermida doesn’t work out. And when Varitek catches, that right-handed platoon player in Left better mash or this team will struggle. Best case ….a 890-900 run team. Worst case …you probably test the 2006 low, which was 820.

America has for some time now been a supposed beacon of fighting for human rights and fighting tyran

America has for some time now been a supposed beacon of fighting for human rights and fighting tyranny in our foreign policy. On so many occasions, when declaring war, or addressing the nation, Presidents of all kinds cite our freedoms, democracy, and human/civil rights, as a cornerstone of our efforts. We have been ‘underwriters’ of freedom for fifty years now. A nation that has fought for the greater good and wants to bring peace and democracy to everyone that deserves it, while bringing those that oppose it to justice. This has been our mantra for as far back as my research has found.

In recent times though, we have been neglecting human rights here at home, and recently a debate has started to brew over providing those very rights we stand for to those that we deem undeserved. Presidents Obama spoke of closing Gitmo by January 2010, but in recent months has realized that it will not happen in that time frame. Gitmo stands as a facility the houses ‘detainees’ that are connected to terrorist organizations and have ties to Al Qaeda networks with aspirations of hurting innocent people in the name of Allah and to fight oppression. These people have been tortured, harassed, and humiliated over the years and have denied every right that we, as a nation, stand for.

In recent months the talk of closing Gitmo has caused a firestorm of debate about what to do with these detainees. It seems that no prison wants them, and no one wants them on American soil. We all seem content holding them, off American shores, and just imprisoning them out of sight and out of mind. The issue presented, of putting them in our prisons, is that they may convert prisoners and be able to plot further American attacks once out of Gitmo. My contention on the subject of putting them in American prisons is that they will have no more power there than in Gitmo. What do you think American citizens in prison would do if they found out a terrorist was being transferred to their prison? I believe that those terrorists would be dead in about 24 hours. They would be killed by the Americans in our prisons. Isn’t this what the blood thirsty patriots want? The lives of those connected to 9/11 dead?

These terrorists, no matter how ‘evil’, have been denied the very human rights we as a country have declared wars to protect. As men in the custody of US forces on a military base makes them POW’s or at the least prisoners. The issue with them coming to US prisons would mean that, to put them there, they would have to have access to council and stand trial for their crimes. You can’t put someone in prison who was not tried and sentenced. So what this means is that we would have to try every one of them based on evidence of their crimes and sentence them. This process could take years, and I am betting ten bucks against a bucket of clams that some of the cases would be pretty thin to say the least. So we don’t want to face the fact that we may have to release them based on a lack of hard evidence in our beloved justice system. We are all content keeping them as ‘detainees’ and denying them everything this country represents.

Let’s say we were willing to try them and presented the evidence we had against each of them, do you think they can get a fair trial in this country? That is one of the stipulations of the justice system in selecting a jury, a ‘fair trial’. You must be convicted by a jury of your peers…they really don’t have any peers in this country and I would have to claim a mistrial if they were convicted. There is no place in the industrialized world that would garner them a fair trial in any real sense of the word. These men would never get a fair shake in America, or with any of our allies. And once they are in the system their defense team could claim mistrials, file appeals, question evidence collection, counter sue for human rights violations, unfair trials, et al. They could be released based on shoddy evidence chain of custody. We would have to face that our hatred and fear of these men might be largely unsubstantiated, then we might actually feel bad about how we have treated them, God forbid we need to apologize for our actions.

There is the very acceptable idea of extraditing the prisoners to their home countries for trial. Why not? Afghanis, Pakistanis, et al, would be sent home to stand trial. Would it be corrupt? Probably. But then we can wash our hands of it and stop being the human rights violating country that we are. Besides, let’s just say that they got to walk free after a corrupt trial, we are sending a ton of troops and forces back in to Afghanistan, we’ll find them at some point (we know what they look like) and we can execute them as casualties of war without looking like barbarians just using capital punishment while in our custody to kill them. This is really the only logical way to close the facility, and get what we Americans think we want, blood.

What if we did what a lot of men might want to see. Just let them loose on America streets and put up posters of their faces. Just let them loose in America and see what happens. I am pretty sure that Americans would be just fine with the nation declaring open season on these men. Martial law would provide immunity for all Americans to grab a gun and shoot these men on sight. In about 48 hours every single one of them would be dragged through the streets and hung from light posts along Mina Street in Anytown, USA. What, too barbaric? Well you don’t want them in our prisons, you don’t want trials, don’t want to extradite them, and they simply cannot stay at Gitmo, so what do you want? Do you even know?

The real issue is that this nation is participating in an act that is deplorable, detaining ‘suspects’ without any of the rights that American law dictates they must have. I doubt that any have been fairly tried. I doubt that any have seen a legitimate lawyer, and I know for a fact they have been very mistreated under the Geneva convention and well as UN agreements. We have acted as beasts in treating these hostile prisoners with almost no respect for the human rights we seemingly have shed blood to protect and spread. The activity of holding them at Gitmo without trial or conviction is the same practice the Nazi’s used with Jews and allied forces POW’s in WWII. It is the same type of practice we used on American soil when we put Asian-Americans in camps without any evidence of wrong doing or conspiracy against the US. Right this second, as we speak, men are being treated in the same way the Nazi’s treated us, and Americans, as whole, seem to be ok with this practice.

America is now going to put in to action a troop surge to root out Al Qaeda forces and establish a stable Afghanistan spreading peace, security, and human rights in the region. Our underlying motive is always security and respect coupled with rights that every man deserves. As a side note we spread democracy, which inherently includes the pursuit of justice. As a nation we have a very rickety soapbox to speak from if we continue to mistreat and deny our ‘detainees’ the very rights we are trying to spread overseas. This nation cannot hope to truly achieve its goals if we say one thing and participate in actions that run contrary to our foreign policies. If we are to truly accomplish the goals we hope to, and are to gain the trust and admiration of countries and their populations we must first and foremost lead by example. Bush even said that we would not stoop to the level of the terrorists, and we have in our treatment and rendition of those we held captive; some may argue that this has only strengthened their resolve creating an intractable situation overseas. We must be a beacon for other countries to aspire to in every way if we are to be a model of international citizenship. The days of our father’s “Do what I say, not what I do,” mentality has passed if we are to inspire trust and develop relationships with those that we influence.

Welcome back to our 10th adventure brings us to False Cape State Park in the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge in the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach, VA.

Today’s Rekre8r adventurers were newcomer Lindsey (check out her info on [Rec Crew]) & I. Get ready to grab some shells, call out to Flipper, and run after cat’s cause it’s going to get wild in this refuge of bay. Here’s a rundown of the trip:

*Leave for trip*

- Lunch & Dessert at Rigoletto’s Italian Bakery & Cafe: Try the Il Vesuvio Sand which and if you get the Napoleon get the roll, the pastry pie was too flaky and hard to eat with a fork in small bites. Great service, fresh food served to you, and go there when they have the Fagioli soup, delicious!

- False Cape SP:

Visitor Center: Filled with interesting stuffed animals, a balloon safety banner, a few items to purchase – small but interesting to quickly browse.

False Cape Interior Trail: The trail loops around in a loop head to a continuation of the trail that was closed off for birds that day – I think they were on parade since the trails were closed a lot for birds that day! The trail walks along the bayside and inlets and gives you wonderful views of the water and ocean dunces.

Ocean Bay Trail: This foot bridge takes you down to a path by the water where you can watch dolphins swim, walk along the shore, and collect shells along the way.

Bird Sanctuary: This was a bit off set the interior trail but had an auditorium style room that was available to watch birds and squared off sections in a wall to bird watch with your binoculars.

Bay Marsh Trail: very pretty see as it was filled with a marsh of cat tails and lead off to a looking point where you can see across the water the homes from afar and watch the birds soar.

- Mini din-din at Taco Bell

* Return Home *

Here’s our outlook on the trip:

Lindsey:
1. What was the best part of the trip? The totally awesome sunset. WOW

2. What was the worst part of the trip? The glorified port-a-potty that was 80 feet deep.

3. What the best part of the adventure you’d recommend to come back and see? Ironically, the glorified port-a-potty that was 80 feet deep.

4. What would you leave out of your adventure? Probably having to use the glorified port-a-potty that was 80 feet deep.

5. What would you tweet about on your trip? OMG…I’m using the world’s deepest port-a-potty!** TWEET!

**Haha, just kidding…..this place was amazing and it’s even more amazing to know that it is practically in my back yard. Lots of little trails and pretty water spots for the sun to glimmer off of. Also beach access for collecting shells. All around great trip!

Isaac:
1. What was the best part of the trip? Looking for seashells with holes along the beach so I can make a necklace and while doing do that watching the dolphins play in the water when one of them dove out and through the water!

2. What was the worst part of the trip? When I went on the novel idea of wandering through the trees thinking that there would be a great exploration to a diff side of the part; a cut through, well it was only a deserted deer den.

3. What the best part of the park you’d recommend to come back and see? To go during sunset time at the boardwalk with the marsh of cat tails, walk to the end of the dock, sit on the beach and look out in the horizon with having the birds fly overhead! To also check out the rest of the Interior Trail to see the Cemetary Trail and Monument Site (which we didn’t get to see)

4. What would you leave out of your adventure? The giant tiget skin in the visitor center it just seemed very out of place.

5. What would you tweet about on your trip? I’m awesomer than Lindsey and she knows it! TWEET!

Definitely bring: a light hoodie, camera, binoculars for bird watching, a fishing pole, and some string to tie up some shells together in a necklace or store them in a small sandwich bag!

You can check out the [Playlist] of popular songs we heard during the trip!

Why I Love the Berkeley Hills

(A point of geography: the term Berkeley Hills applies to one of ranges of the Pacific Coast Ranges. These hills used to be called the Contra Costa Hills. Therefore the term “Berkeley Hills” includes those hills above Oakland as well as those above Berkeley. ”Berkeley Hills” is a geographic term (a toponym, to be exact) and has nothing to do with political or city boundaries. I just want my good neighbors in Oakland to know they are not being left out when I speak of the Berkeley Hills!)

❀❀❀

I’ve been so busy getting my dharma journal, Metta Refuge, up and running, I just haven’t had time to get anything posted here at “Berkeley, Naturally!”

But today, the first day of December, that changes! I thought the least I could do was post some introductory images from my hikes in Strawberry and Claremont Canyons. I wanted folks to see why I’m so in love with the Berkeley Hills area and why I feel so grateful to live here.

I’m also working on my first post about an animal you’ll often run across in the Hills. It’s actually a much-loved insect (yes, insect!) More on that later!

For now, here on some images that will give visitors to this blog a feel for our beautiful ecosystem here in the East Bay. If you click on the small image, you’ll get a much larger one you can download for your desktops. Enjoy! Steve

❀❀❀

I took these next two photos this summer in Strawberry Canyon. The grasses are brown because it’s been nearly five months since the last substantial rain, and the Great October Rainstorm of 2009 is still months away.

After 33 years in Boston, I can’t tell you what a marvel it is go a whole summer without a trace of rain! As a boy growing up in the Mojave desert, I was used to long rainless periods, but even in the desert, we had summer “monsoon” thunderstorms. The Bay area’s “Mediterranean” climate and summer drought are fascinating, and I look forward to discussing how they shape this ecosystem.

These next two photos were just two weeks after our amazing October rain storm. (The heaviest October rain in 47 years!) What a difference!

As a newcomer to the area, I was amazed at how fast the hills “greened up.” The plants in this area have some amazing adaptations to the Mediterranean climate we have here, and I’ll be writing a lot about that in later posts. Here’s a nice shot looking across Strawberry Canyon to the historical UC Berkeley Cyclotron.

My favorite trees in the Canyons are the somewhat controversial Eucalyptus, which were introduced to this area in the 1850s. These beautiful trees dominate much of the terrain in the Canyons.

One of the best things about living in Berkeley is being so close to wonderful hiking and fire trails. Here are some images from some of my favorite hikes.

Once you gain some altitude into the hills, you are often rewarded with beautiful vistas of San Francisco Bay and unobstructed skies.

There are a huge range of plants in the Strawberry and Claremont Canyons. Here are two of my favorites: lichens and some wild (unripe) blackberries:

Many of the trees on the steeper slopes have a real battle with gravity and erosion. (I’ll be writing much more about Berkeley Hills plants and their challenges in later posts.)

Finally, hiking in the hills you’ll definitely come across wild animals. I’ll never forget the first time I came upon a flock of wild turkeys in Strawberry Canyon. (Alas, I’ve yet to have my camera with me when I’ve come across them.) There are many kinds of birds, too, including large raptors. But the toughest, most aggressive bird you’ll come across in the Canyons is the smallest! Meet the pound-for-pound champ, the Rufous Hummingbird:

You’ll also run across reptiles on your hikes. I’ve seen several kinds of garter snakes, and along the sunnier trails, you’ll almost see always some Western Fence lizards:

And some of the creatures you’ll find in the Hills are just, well, fantastic:

I hope you enjoyed my first “Berkeley, Naturally” post. With my other blog established, I hope to get into a rhythm and post here several times a week.

Happy trails! Steve

Earlier in the season, I touched on one of the things that I strongly feel helps create a champion.

Earlier in the season, I touched on one of the things that I strongly feel helps create a champion. Namely that a champion rarely runs through the regular season nearly uncontested and continues that path through the playoffs to an eventual trophy. Champions need to face some adversity to forge their identity and harden their resolve. Step two in that process of forging through adversity is to apply it and ignite.

The Packers appear to be very close to that point. They have felt the sting of losing big games, suffered a meltdown loss to lowly competition, and faced heavy pressure from the outside. A much talked about player meeting occurred following the week 9 loss to the Buccaneers where the players apparently decided enough was enough. There have been notable changes for the better since, on both sides of the ball (special teams….that is for another discussion).

With 3 straight wins in a short 12 days, not only has the ship been righted, but the Packers find themselves favorites to win a wild card spot, in complete control of their own destiny. More importantly, ashes are smoldering, there is a small flame, the team is on the verge of catching fire, if it hasn’t already.

The teams that ride into the playoffs hot, having already experienced real gut check moments, are almost always the most dangerous of all. It is as if the hatred of losing is what drives them, more intensely than teams that haven’t experienced that sort of adversity. Right now the Packers are playing as well as they have all season on offense and as well as they have all season on defense (though they need to continue to build through the losses of Al and Aaron).

If this team continues on this path and rides a hot streak through the remainder of the year, they will be exactly where they want to be, possibly even a stronger contender than they were in 2007, which peaked during the 3rd quarter of the season. The goal of any team is to save their peak for the playoffs, and the Packers are in position to do just that. History has shown that teams like the Saints and Vikings, which run through the regular season dishing out blowout after blowout, peak a little too early, and often struggle in the playoffs.

The Packers have to capitalize on this building momentum, continue to improve, and avoid any letdowns. If so I would consider them a very strong contender at the end. Right now there is no better position to be in from my point of view than where the Packers are now.

Over the years we have gone out to the French River where it dumps into the Georgian Bay at Dallas R

Over the years we have gone out to the French River where it dumps into the Georgian Bay at Dallas Rapids.

There used to be a fishing camp out there called Camp Mc Intosh & that is where people stayed that liked to troll for large yellow pickerel with seven-inch silver & black floating Rapalas at night-time & big musky with large silver flatfish in the day time.

I took the picture of the forty pound musky years ago.

Some of the best big smallmouth bass fishing in Georgian Bay is also to be found in this area but mostly out on the shoals & rocks near the bay itself.

This is without a doubt the best big yellow pickerel (walleye) fishing in all of Canada that equals what The Moon River Basin used to be.

Thousands of big yellow pickerel in the fifteen to seventeen pound range have been taken here trolling seven-inch floating Rapalas at night.

Years ago you had to camp out on the islands as all of the lodges were booked when the big pickerel made their annual spawning run around June 10 of each year which usually lasted for about ten full days & nights.

A hundred boats would be slowly trolling The French River each night & all of them would be taking trophy sized fish.

Camp McIntosh was full of pictures of the big walleye, pike & musky taken in this area.

I have no idea whether this lodge remains in business or not but when it was it was booked solid.

At the base of Dallas Rapids you can catch walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, sturgeon & musky & do this from the bank when the water is low enough.

I have never caught many yellow pickerel trolling this area in the day time as the water is clear & not real deep for the most part so it is mostly a night-time affair only for the serious fishermen.

However, out around the bay in this area is a different story as it is full of trophy fish & they do hit well trolling or casting lures in the day time.

If I were going to fish this area for a week or more The Georgian Bay Fish Camp would be a good place to stay if you do not like wilderness camping.

This is bear country out here & they can be a problem for campers at times.

There are many areas to explore out here & it is a large area far away from civilization.

You can also go to the Bad River Channel from here which can also be good for yellow pickerel night-time trolling at certain times & The Bustard Islands are not far away either.

The Bustard Islands are full of trophy fish but one should not venture out that way unless properly informed & equipped as bad weather could get you stuck out there or killed if your boat is to small or not safe enough for the big water you must cross to get there.

Boats loaded down with camping gear, gas & food for a week are not safe in big water & a ship to shore radio is a must unless you can get a cell phone to work out there.

I always wanted to go out there & camp for a week but it was never in the cards & we just never made it mostly because of safety concerns.

There used to be fish camps out there but I was told they closed down because of the bad weather problems & fishermen getting stranded & not home on time & all that.

Best to get a guide to take you out there the first few times or forget it just to be safe.

This area is a long way from the road at Route 69 & Key River Junction but well worth the trip as the scenery & beauty of the area is something to behold & especially on a clear day when you can see the Killarney Mountains in the background.

Fox Bay on the way out can be excellent fishing at times along with many other long bays out there.

When you get to Dead Island which is an active Sacred Native Peoples Burial Ground you have to choose to take the inland route to the right which is marked with buoys & winds in & out of islands & bays to protect you from big winds or bad weather or go straight across the big open water if the weather conditions permit.

Use caution here as wind whipped waves can get up to fifteen high in the big open water & do that in an instant.

There are also shoals all over the area & many of them are not marked well after you get off the channel markers & buoys.

The big water is trout & salmon water & very cold & will kill you in a hurry if you go in so keep that in mind when making choices & decisions about trying to cross big water in small boats or canoes which are heavily loaded with camping, gear, gasoline & food.

Kayakers know how to do this & they also have the right equipment on to avoid hypothermia in case of a rare dumping.

A Kayak is one thing & an open canoe another.

If you venture out this way be careful & enjoy it as it will be one of the most exciting parts of your trip to Georgian Bay.

You will be out where people are few & wildlife abounds.

The beauty of the area will take hold of you & you will always long to return for more exploration & adventure.

There are several places out there I have never been to & now I am thinking about them & what they will be like.

I look at the new satellite maps Google put out & I see inland lakes I never knew were there & I am wondering?

Is this where the record largemouth lurks?

A place where virtually no one goes to find & fish for them?

I think I could hike back in there & catch them from the bank.

I can not wait to get up there again to see for myself.

And what about Tower Lake?

Do big largemouth lurk there also?

It goes on & on & on with me.

It’s in my blood.

The Georgian Bay.

Ivan told me about a lake out near Dallas Rapids that you have to hike back into that is full of trout.

He used to take people out there to fish for them.

I could never figure out which lake it is but I have talked to fishermen he took out there & they came back with trout.

One of them said a six foot rattlesnake crossed right in front of them hiking in there with Ivan & he just stepped right over him & kept moving on like it was no big deal.

They say massasaugas do not get much over three feet long so was this a timber rattler?

There is a picture of a massasauga 4 1/2 foot long that showed up in a Chicago pond & they were thought to be extinct in that area for many years.

Ivan was a full blooded Native Indian that spent his whole life exploring all the islands & lakes in this area & he also worked with the Canadian Wildlife people stocking these lakes with fry from float planes.

He actually stocked this spring fed cold water inland lake with these trout.

It seemed to me they were called speckled trout.

He guided fishermen in this area for years & years for The Key Harbour Lodge.

Lucky for me all the times he allowed us to follow him around.

He used to take people places that would take years & years to find or discover on their own.

Askorbik Asit (C) 2,80
* Maca B1, B2 , C ve diğerleri gibi pek çok vitamin ihtiva etmektedir. Araştırma Maca’nın ayrıca 4 alkaloit ihtiva ettiğini gösterir: macaïne 1,2,3d ve 4. Erkek ve kadının üreme sistemlerini harekete geçirmektedir.
* Tiamin – B1 bu vitamin kan şekerini enerjiye çevirir (co-enzyme) – sporcular gibi çok faal insanlar özellikle bu vitamine gıdalardan verimli besin absorbesi için ihtiyaç duyarlar. Bu vitamin ayrıca daha aktif hissetmenizi sağlar ve günlük yaşamda size daha çok enerji verir.
* Riboflavin – B2 Vücudun protein/karbonhidratlar/yağlar’dan enerji çıkarmasını, ve stresli durumlarla daha iyi başa çıkmasını sağlar; hayat için önemlidir. HCl eksikliğin yetersiz B2 absorbsiyonuna yol açar. Terleme/idrar ile kaybedilir (suda çözünür). Işıkta yok olur. B2 yetersizliği şunlara yol açar: ağız kenarlarında çatlaklara, ekzemaya, konjunktivit, kellik, -ayak yanması, kas zayıflığı, baş dönmesi, tireme,ürperme.
* MİNERALLER
* Maca ‘da mevcut bulunan mineraller (mg/100gr)
potasyum 2050
kalsiyum 150
demir 16,6
çinko 3,8
sodyum 18,7
manganez 0,8
bakır 5,9
* Kaynak: A. Dini, 1994
* Maca’nın analizinde demir, kalsiyum, potasyum ve çinko zenginliği şaşırtıcıdır. (tabloya bakınız)
* Potasyum ; düzenli hücre faaliyetlerinin gerçekleşmesi için gerekli olan dengeyi sağlamakta önemli rol oynar. Vücudun elektriksel aktivitesini düzenler(örneğin, kalp atışı) ve kaslara sinir iletilerini ulaştırır; bazı hormonları serbest bırakır ve sinir aktarıcıları düzenler. Düşük olduğu haller, yüksek kan basıncı, ve kalp ritim bozuklukları şeklinde kendini gösterir.
* Demir kan üretimi ve vücut içerisinde oksijen taşınması ile yükümlüdür.İnkaların oksijenin az olduğu yüksekliklere adapte olmasında hayli etkili olmuştur. Eksikliğinde çocuklukta öğrenme problemleri, konsantrasyon eksikliği ve dikkat yetersizliği kendini gösterir. Eksikliği soğuğa duyarlılık ve indirgenmiş bağışıklık,bitkinlikle tarifi yapılabilecek anemiye sebep olabilir. Kadınlar menopoz dönemine girdiklerinde diyetlerinde iki kat daha fazla demire ihtiyaç duyarlar.
* Kalsiyum ; kendi türündeki tüm diğer sebzelere oranla en çok maca’da bulunmaktadır. Kalsiyum insan vücudunda en çok bulunan mineraldir, diş, kemikler ve çocukların normal düzeyde gelişim seyri göstermeleri için çok önemlidir.
* Çinko: bu mineral; CNS enzim sistemlerine(örneğin sindirim/solunum), kemik kalsiyumlandırılması, üreme sistemi, bağışıklık sistemi ve beyin için gereklidir. Alkol, emzirme, diabet, yaşlanmaya bağlı östrojen eklenmesi, kortikal steroidler ve idrar söktürücüler ile tüketilmiş ya da azalmış olabilir.
* Yirmi adet amino asit, standart genetik kodla kodlanmışlardır ve proteinogenik veya standart amino asitler olarak adlandırılırlar. Daha seyrek rastlanan ve daha komplike olanları vücut tarafından üretilirler ve nonstandard(standart dışı) olarak tanımlanırlar. Proline, yan grubu dairesel ve bir amino grubuna bağlı olan, tek proteinogenik amino asittir.
* AMİNOASİTLER
* Amino asitler proteinlerin temel yapı taşlarıdır. Sırası gelince protein denen yapıları oluşturan; peptid veya polypeptid diye adlandırılan kısa polimer halkaları oluştururlar.Yirmi adet amino asit, standart genetik kodla kodlanmışlardır ve proteinogenik veya standart amino asitler olarak adlandırılırlar. Daha seyrek rastlanan ve daha komplike olanları vücut tarafından üretilirler ve nonstandard(standart dışı) olarak tanımlanırlar. Proline, yan grubu dairesel ve bir amino grubuna bağlı olan, tek proteinogenik amino asittir. Daha önceleri, proline yanlış anlaşılmış bir şekilde imino asit olarak adlandırılırdı. Protein içeren diğer amino asitler , genellikle çevirimsel uyarlama sonrası modifikasyonla oluşmaktadır; ki bu uyarlama sonrası modifikasyon anlamına gelmektedir(protein sentezi). Bu modifikasyonlar, proteinin işlevi için sıklıkla gereklidirler.
* Maca’da mevcut amino asitler (mg/gr of protein)
Aspartik asit 91.7mg
Glutanik asit 156.5mg
Serin 50.4mg

This is the Publix grocery store that I go to go grocery shopping!

I know…it doesn’t look like a grocery store. I drove around it three times before I figured out that it actually was the grocery store. It looks super spiffy from the outside, but inside it looks like a Safeway. Pre-remodel. It even has that eighties speckled floor.

The following are pictures from the road that I take to drive to the grocery store. It is just the prettiest drive. It’s along the Venetian Causeway, and it consists of a bunch of little bridges stringing across several little islands. It takes about ten minutes from my apartment to the grocery store.

The thing I love the most about Miami architecture is that people here don’t shy away from bright colors or geometric designs. Even in the “ghetto” or the poorest neighborhoods, the houses are bright pink, green, and yellow. These buildings were just regular parking garages and office buildings. Aren’t they pretty?

When a woodpecker is working the area you are camped in you will hear the constant wood pecking sound.

The holes they put into dead trees are always facing south.

They are a thrill to watch & even get to see as they are very sneaky & elusive birds.

Prevailing winds come from the west & go east & when a warm south wind comes fishing is good

Prevailing winds come from the west & go east & when a warm south wind comes fishing is good & when north winds come fishing is bad.

South winds also mean thunder storms soon.

The woodpecker holes always face south.

The tree tops all point to the east or northeast.

When you get up in the morning & everything is dry with no dew on it expect rain soon by noon.

If there is dew on the grass or your canoe no rain that day by noon.

If it is raining when you retire for the night & raining when you get up in the morning like it often is in The Georgian Bay I have no idea what to tell you except make sure you bring good rain gear with you & rubber boots.

The weather in this area is basically unpredictable to the extreme.

The weather forecast from Parry Sound, Sudbury or Killarney are basically useless as the weather is always different in The Key River area.

Thunder storms in this area move around in circles at times & it is really hard to tell whether they are coming your way or not so off the water is your best bet & wait them out.

Fog can be a real pain & problem out off of Dead Island at times.

Dead Island is a sacred Local Native People Burial Ground & there are Native People laid to rest there to this day.

Make sure you have a compass & know how to use it or you can get lost in a fog bank in a hurry & end up out on the big water out past Dead Island where it may not be safe for you to be if your boat is to small or shallow.

Fritts & I got stuck out there in fog once & it took us a couple of hours to figure out exactly where we were as we had no compass or map with us & we could not find land.

The fog just popped up out of nowhere & we ended up right in it.

The big blow is a major concern on Georgian Bay as they can & do kick up in a hurry & without warning & sometimes last quite a few days.

When this happens it may be impossible to get very far safely in small fishing boats.

There are back ways & routes small boats can take when the wind is up but there will always be stretches of water where this is not possible & it is always dangerous because of this fact.

There is no safe passage out past Dead Island in high winds & storms period.

Not for small boats.

There is one stretch of open water that has to be crossed & no way to get around that or avoid it & I have seen fifteen foot waves there many times.

Lightening is also a major concern as the whole area is solid rock & when lightning strikes it goes off in all directions & bounces from island to island.

Best get off the water when you see electrical storm activity & do that immediately just to be safe.

A few years back a man in a bass boat behind us coming in off a lake here in Ohio was struck by lightning in a fiberglass bass boat & all that was left of him was a pile of ashes.

They were just a couple of minutes behind us.

The other person with him was burned badly but somehow survived.

The cold water in Georgian Bay can kill a person in a hurry if they go in & can not get out & warmed up in a hurry.

Best to wait storms out just to be safe in this respect.

Fifty mile per hour winds can flip any boat over in rough seas & the wind in A Georgian Bay Storm may exceed that & get up to 70 miles per hour & do that instantly.

I have heard there are over 10,000 sunken wrecks in Georgian Bay & I don’t mean small fishing boats.

Commercial vessels to be exact so that should tell you something.

Caution is order on Georgian Bay at all times just to be safe & enjoy your trip & make it back home in one piece.

Watch the birds & animals up there closely & observe how they behave.

If they fly low to the water or seek shelter in low lying places or wind sheltered places you can be sure something is blowing up.

Camp fire smoke that does not rise straight up is a good sign a storm is on the way.

When the cold north winds come you need heavy warm clothes the same you would wear in the winter so always take them with you even in the middle of summer just to be safe as it can get really cold there at any time of the year when these un-welcome breezes visit from the arctic.

I have seen it snow in June & July.

I have seen it rain for days on end without stopping.

I have seen big winds that stay all week.

Always go prepared for the worst & buy the best rubber boots & rain gear you can get your hands on.

Tarps are a must if a long rain comes in that will last for several days & nights.

Wool sock hat, gloves, sweaters, jackets, long under-wear & wind breakers are needed at all times in Georgian Bay just to be safe & to keep you warm when boating out on the cold wind whipped waters of the bay in the early morning & evenings & they also help to keep the bugs off your skin when neccessary.

You also need a good sun hat to keep from getting sunburned on your head, face & nose.

When I go to Georgian Bay I always expect it to be raining when I get there & a lot of the time it is.

To remedy this situation I purchased several water proof plastic barrels to put all my clothes & camping gear in or anything I don’t want to get wet & they work like a charm & also float in a capsize which gives you a better level of safety.

They also keep most animals out of your food stores with the exception of the big black bears who rarely raid occupied camps anyway.

I have made sails out of nylon that are held high by two boat paddles that can be used to move along with the wind in case of a motor breakdown.

They work well with canoes when the wind is favorable.
