Oggi ho avuto la fortuna e l’onore di essere invitato a parlare alla Festa del Socio della Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Monastier e del Sile.

Ho visto facce vere, di gente vera, che a partire da una mossa della propria libertà decide di donare, gratuitamente, tempo, denaro, cultura -ovvero modo di vedere la vita- per non restare intrappolata nell’individualismo.

Ho visto facce di gente che lavora per musei del territorio, donati da persone senza altro scopo che creare valore per il territorio, non per le proprie tasche o quelle dei manager. Ho avuto modo di riflettere sulle ragioni di tutto questo, prima di tutto per me stesso, a partire da quanto affermato da Benedetto XVI nella sua Enciclica più recente:“Senza la verità la carità scivola nel sentimentalismo. La verità libera la carità dalle strettoie di un emotivismo che la priva di contenuti relazionali e sociali.”

Dico grazie per tutto questo.

OK – so e-mail has many failings (such as being able to fake the source etc), but I’d like to add this to the feature requests; A BCC message tag.

Essentially it would enable a User to email a recipient, and put a secret message within the email to BCC recipients.

Example; Let’s say we email Joe Bloggs (a client) and BCC some workers, then within the message we could put a special tag (e.g [BCC Message]) that only John Doe (or any bcc recipients) would get.

Some of the benefits of this (over sending a duplicate email) is mailbox space, bandwidth, efficiency etc etc.

Miss Gunyarat Teeport has 5 siblings and her eldest sister has a speech impediment (dumb).  Her family worships spirits and give things to appease the spirits as they do not know God.  The family is very poor and only has one meal a day and has to mix the rice with corn or whatever they have.  Even though the parents work in the fields Miss Gunyarat also had to work very hard to help her parents.  Her siblings have never attended school as they all had to keep working.  After her father died, her mother returned to Omgoi District in Chiangmai and left her with other people which made her devastated.

She had planned to commit suicide by hanging herself but people prevented from doing so.  After this her mother took Miss Gunyarat to live with her in Omgoi District and helped Miss Gunyarat to attend school.  Miss Gunyarat has moved to stay at a hostel where she came to know and believe in God.  She has applied to study the Bible Correspondence Courses of Journey Into Life as several of her friends are studying these courses.  Learning about God has given her peace and hope to carry on in life.  She said “It is because of God’s love that I have peace until this day. I continue to thank God.”  The BCC have helped her to know how she should lead her life and now is studying lesson 3 of the second course and says “My life has changed without me knowing it and I don’t have any more hardship as in the past.”  The Word of God is in her, God leads and guides her life so that she is able to move forward with confidence as she knows God will never leave her.  Miss Gunyarat plans to complete studying the correspondence courses which will help her to lead life according to God’s will.

Miss Gunyarat has asked for prayers for her as she leads her life so that she will have a close relationship with God and that at times, when she feels like giving up and that God will guide her and help overcome these times.  Currently, she is staying in a Christian hostel and requests for prayers that she will grow and become a faithful child of God.

Set-up a small business from home

With increasing numbers of small businesses taking advantage of new technologies such as the Internet and mobile, wireless technology available to them at an affordable cost it is becoming much easier to establish a business from your living room.

According to the British Chambers of Commerce small businesses based from home appear to be thriving despite the current economic climate.

Enterprise Nation carried out a survey based on Home Businesses. The results showed that 5,500 people are swapping the daily commute for a home-based venture every week, funded using redundancy payouts.

The founder of Enterprise Nation, Emma Jones, has stated that the report confirms that
more people are starting up businesses from home due to the low costs and wanting a better work/life balance. She went on to say that basing a business from home is not an obstacle to growth as the internet has allowed small business owners to outsource work and collaborate with other talented entrepreneurs.

Let’s take a quick look at the pros of running your business from home:

• Personal freedom – you no longer have to spend hours in commuter traffic every day, there are no bosses you have to answer to, no dress-code, no office politics, etc.
• Less stress – from home you can set-up and stick to your own schedule.
• More time for family and friends – you set your deadlines and working hours.
• Affordability – since you are working from home you don’t have additional overheads to payout that having office premises would usually demand such as additional bills, commuting expenses, etc.
• Tax advantages – having your home and office under one roof means that you can deduct part of your home’s expenses such as your mortgage, council tax, insurance and utilities as business expenses.
• Increased productivity and opportunities for professional growth – being your own boss gives you the opportunity to take on all elements of running a business such as sales, marketing, business development and business analysis. In addition to this you no longer have to budget for time, energy and expenses for commuting, therefore you have more time and energy to put into making your business succcessful.

So if you are considering leaving work or you’ve been made redundant and at a loose-end then starting a home business could be perfect for you.

Il Corriere della Sera on line di oggi dà notizia della decisione, presa con approvazione sindacale, della Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Roma, con la quale si stabilisce che il posto di lavoro dei padri pensionati. La Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Roma è una società privata, che esercita l’attività bancaria sotto forma di cooperativa di credito. Nessuno può mettere in discussione, non trattandosi di ente pubblico, la modalità di reclutamento descritta, anche se sotto il profilo dell’efficienza e della professionalità le qualità dei padri non è affatto garantito che si trasmettano ai figli.

Il punto della questione è un altro, anche se nell’attuale congiuntura, fatta di crisi, di fame di posti di lavoro, di insicurezza, la decisione della Bcc di Roma, sia pure limitatamente e in relazione ad un territorio ben circoscritto, invita ad uno sguardo positivo sul futuro.

Il punto della questione riguarda tutti i giovani per i quali si prepara un posto in banca sicuro, dove tutto è garantito, dove tutto è assicurato e non si deve rischiare nulla. Perché la vita è fatta di rischio e chiudersi in un recinto prima ancora che essa inizi, forse non è molto educativo. Non educa, cioè non aiuta e non offre un criterio, per affrontare la vita.

In 5 weeks, BCC will sadly farewell one of its most dedicated and hard working teachers. Mr Tomaz Lasic has signalled and end to his time here at Belmont City College and with that it will end an era of commitment and ICT development that has enabled the college to take great leaps and bounds.

The e-Voice’s Anthony Wheeler conducted an interview with Mr Lasic last week. This is a look into the man that is, Mr Lasic.

Anthony Wheeler. What brought you to work at BCC?

Mr Lasic. Initially? Necessity. I needed a job in 2005 it was an odd occasion. I was asked by a friend if the position existed, it had just opened up and I happened to be at the right place at the right time. So I said yeah sure, absolutely and put my hand up for it.

Anthony. When you look at BCC how do you feel the school has changed over the years?

Mr Lasic. The most significant change occurred around before I was at this school. It was the period from 2003-2004 to the later periods 2006-2007 and 2008. What I call the process of renewal. When Belmont city college was identified…to put it bluntly as a school in trouble. And with a lot of work from staff and students we turned things around, so in that respect I don’t know how much has changed or how bad it was before but I do know based on the anecdotes and the things that we hear that the school has changed significantly. Sadly, it still has a tag somewhat of a bad school but it has gotten a lot better.

Anthony. What was your roll in the ICT department? What was that like for you?

Mr Lasic. Well at this school, it was the one area of profession that before coming to this school I was sort of interested in but it was in 2006 that the whole fire really took off and I was given time each week to coordinate what is considered one of the schools priorities which is the ICT department. It has really changed the course of my career. It has been phenomenal and it has really opened my eyes thanks to it. First of all I have really changed my class room practice to make it much easier on me and hopefully on students but that part of my professional experience really has been a rounding success and I loved every minute.

Anthony. Do you feel that the Philosophy and Ethics course was successful?

Mr Lasic. Overall, yes! Of course as I look back I see so many things we could have done better but considering that this is the first year we have run the course and this is the first year that I have run the course, I’ve done parts of it here and there at different schools even, but considering this was our first go at it I think we did a really good job and had a really good go at it. It’s not like most of the other subjects that the school offers, it’s different.

Anthony. Amongst your many accomplishments in the school is moodle and particularly the ‘have your say’ forum. How do you feel about them?

Mr Lasic. I think that listening to students voices is an absolutely vital part of this thing we call education. Without this voice, we are just technicians who administer things to machines. We are here for you guys, you are not here for us and I thought opening up a forum is one way to ensure that students are heard, at least have a space where you guys can voice your opinions safely and equally, even though there is a bit of spam and swearing, even though I said don’t but it’s no big issue. Overall the experience has been over whelmingly positive. I can’t see any other space physical or virtual where a year 8 can talk to a year 12 without any fear or influence from a teacher or whatever, that’s why I think it has been such a great success.

Some complaints have been made that the forum distracts kids from work and I respond by saying, well if they are not engaged then students will play up any way. I said half jokingly at least this way students are working on their literacy, which is not quite true. I do sincerely hope the forum keeps going. What I would like to see is more moderation by students, I don’t have time to police it. I love it I am on every day and look at all the threads and if I spot the odd bit of spam or swearing you know, I warn people but apart from that I really want to give the ownership of it to students at all times.

Anthony. Over your time at BCC what would you say that you are most proud of?

Mr Lasic. I think moodle would have to be one of my sort of legacies, if you will, because it has been taken on so well by both staff and students. I said jokingly to a colleague that you know moodle has really made it in a school when teachers start complaining loudly that moodle is down, and the howls come from round the school “oh moodle is down what are you doing?” its good it shows they care about it and they use it. So moodle and a lot of the work in ICT and introducing the staff to lots of things.

And secondly getting the philosophy and ethics course up and running because I feel that this is what our school needs; our school needs to stand out of the ordinary for something and not the things that we are perhaps usually known for. I would love for us to challenge the beliefs that this is just a school where you go to just get your WACE or whatever and philosophy and ethics is that difference. It’s something that you would not normally get, yet it was very popular. We had 25 kids enrolled, that’s twice the number of any other humanities subject, so it was one way to stand out rather then just doing what everyone else does.

Anthony. Are there any treasured memories you have from Belmont City College?

Mr Lasic. Oh Lots! Lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots, lots. I just think it has been a fantastic five years that I have been associated with this school, but the best memories inevitably involve the students. It’s the simple things like getting a shoulder punch from a year 9 kid after a lesson I mean that is huge it’s just the little things like that despite something being so damn hard some times for whatever reason. It really makes it worthwhile and I will really miss this place…I really miss it.

Anthony. What are your plans for the future?

Mr Lasic. Next year I am going to Thornlie high school to hopefully stir some trouble. They will tell me I’m a nutter and I will wear it as a badge of honor. Some how though I don’t think I will stay teaching. I cant see myself teaching in the next 20 or 30 years. I sort of can’t stand still in one place for too long and do the same thing day in and out it’s just not me. So new challenges and school so we will see how we go.

Anthony. After teaching and working at BCC for five years what will you miss most about this school?

Mr Lasic. The kids and the colleagues, really. Whenever people ask me where do you work and I say Belmont, you know the blood just rushes out of their face and they are like oh my god do you wear a shield or something to work? And I say what are you talking about, but I think the vast majority of our kids are just fantastic they are loyal and honest, they care.

They are the things that no TEE school will show you or elite tables will show you, but they are the things Belmont has something going on with it. Even supporting a teacher that’s something that is an unrecognized strength of Belmont and I sincerely hope we hear more about it and people actually recognise it because it is such a strength of the school. Of course I will miss my colleagues, I mean these that I am working with are fantastic they are fantastic educators they are passionate they are creative, yeah we stir trouble some time but I feel we must to go forward and I sincerely hope, but I think I will be hard pressed to find other co-workers like this because, on a bad day there will always be someone who asks ‘are you OK?, and actually mean it. These people will sit and listen to you and share things with you and help you.

Anthony. Thank you for your time.

• Se você for reenviar algum e-mail…

Conforme dito anteriormente, ao errar na opção de envio, a lista de endereços é adicionada ao corpo do e-mail… Então, apague toda aquela lista antes enviar (como na imagem abaixo). Isso evita que um spammer consiga centenas de endereços numa única vez.

Hay veces que confluyen los acontecimientos de una manera que uno empieza a dudar que sea casual. E intenta uno, casi como un aspirante a científico de lo cotidiano, encontrar una ley, algo común. Vamos primero a los datos, y después me sigo explicando. Y a ver si lo consigo.

Estreno de La escuela expandida

Mañana, miércoles 11 de noviembre, estaremos en el estreno de La escuela expandida en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla. Como ya conté aquí y allá bastante sobre esta experiencia, definitiva y de las que marcan de por vida, me quedo para resumirla y suscribo con todas mis ganas lo que escriben mis admirados ZEMOS98.

La escuela expandida es un esfuerzo por recuperar el valor del aprendizaje, la cooperación y el trabajo en equipo que muchas veces el sistema educativo tritura en pro de los planes de estudio, las políticas y los presupuestos. Esta es la historia de un grupo de chavales a los que durante una semana se les dio la oportunidad de subvertir la lógica educativa tradicional y se les brindó la ocasión de entender que aprender y enseñar puede ser otra cosa.

Y aquí tenéis la cabecera de lo que veremos mañana mismo…

Mesa de blogs educativos en el EBE09

Pocos días después, este próximo sábado 14 de noviembre, como ya ha contado Juanma Díaz, que coordina la mesa y al que hay que agradecer públicamente sus contagiosas ganas, tendré la suerte de estar junto con él y con María Barceló y Lola Urbano en una mesa paralela y educativa del EBE09. Con gente que tantísimo sabe es un placer enorme estar, pero también un compromiso, y ando dándole vueltas a lo que voy a decir allí. Y mi extrañeza ha sido encontrar que, a día de hoy, mientras autocritico mi propia intención de hablar de Los blogs como una de las Bellas Artes, el asunto no aparece en Google. Aunque sí en versión reducida, no global. Casualidades y nexos, que se me vinieron a la cabeza por estar releyendo, cuando Juanma me propuso estar allí, este libro y este otro a la vez. Clarísimamente, ambos tienen en común considerar las cosas de otra manera. Lo que me devuelve al inicio.

Y vuelvo al principio…

…porque hoy me quedaba pensando qué pueden tener que ver uno y otro evento, qué nos dicen de la educación, qué de sus fallas, de sus grietas, de sus errores, de sus aciertos. Y sigo buscando esa ley común de la expansión, de la necesidad de comunicación, de blogs, del tejido de redes, más alternativas o menos, que está detrás de todo esto. De momento, y a falta de más tiempo para pensarlo, me quedo con la acertadísima reflexión de Pedro Jiménez: La endogamia del sistema educativo. Porque la educación expandida y los blogs educativos están apuntando, ambos, a una necesidad urgente de más apertura, más comunicación, desestructuración curricular, tejer otras redes, hacer otras mezclas. Y quizás, como ya dije, deberíamos aprender más del arte contemporáneo. O quizás yo me esté volviendo también edudadaísta. En ese caso, dejo de buscar similitudes, leyes en común. Rige la ley de la excepción. O debería. ¿Cuántos profesores conoces? ¿Cuántos están dispuestos a todo esto? Y, sobre todo ¿por qué no están dispuestos los que no lo están? ¿Deberían estarlo?

The DMM Advisory lit up last week with a not-unexpected announcement regarding Intelligent Mail barcode readability standards: Effective November 30, the 70 percent readability verification threshold will be raised to 80 percent minimum tolerance – on its way to the 90-percent mark, now scheduled to take effect in March 2010.

This shift, set by the Postal Service after hearing recommendations from the Mailers’ Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC), certainly raises the bar on IMB output quality. Fortunately, the USPS reports that “mailers are achieving very good readability scores on MERLIN® for Intelligent Mail barcodes.” In fact, I’d say that’s an understatement: During a recent one-month period, 96 percent of IMB letter mailings submitted to the USPS achieved a MERLIN readability rating of 90 percent or better. This bodes well for the long-term acceptance of barcode technology that quite literally has the potential to transform the way we use paper mail. Of course, these favorable results only tell some of the story: The same early adopters who moved first to build Intelligent Mail into their workflows are more likely to have the equipment and the personnel necessary to ensure the smoothest possible transition. As more mailers in all segments move to IMB – spurred on by USPS mandates instead of postal futurism – the quality of printed barcodes will likely be all across the board, especially at first.

This makes a barcode quality tool like BCC’s Mail Verifier Plus an unquestionable asset to any IMB-minded postal professional; but even more importantly, it speaks to the importance of planning ahead. The USPS has made their intentions plain with regard to the necessity of transitioning to Intelligent Mail. They’ve given the industry plenty of time to make the move, and kept barcode readability standards low (relative to POSTNET and PLANET thresholds) to let mailers test their new IMB-equipped systems. But the clock is ticking on this inevitable innovation: If you’ve yet to switch, there may not be a better time than this to do it.

Ok, maybe not the Century but the year at least.

Staff vs Students Football once again takes place, this is round 2 and things are only just heating up. Already the mind-games and banter have begun. After a crushing 4-1 defeat to the Staff back in Term 2, the students have been seeking vengeance for what they believe was an unfair match right from the start. This was due to what many students put down as a far too big squad for themselves that was allowed; rather than having the ‘cream of the crop’ represent their squad, almost every student from across all year groups were allowed to play, and at short notice.

This time, it’s going to be different. However will the result be the same, or will that change as well?

We shall soon see on Friday November 20 when Staff vs Students round 2 begins during Period 6.

Full squads will be released and displayed on here closer to the date.

Observe as seguintes opções e para que servem esses ítens quando for enviar um e-mail:

• Para [ou To em inglês]: Se houver mais de um destinatário, todos verão a quem o e-mail foi endereçado. Deve ser usado sempre que não houver problema em todos os destinatários saberem para quem você está enviando a mensagem e quando todos forem de confiança.
• CC (Cópia Carbono) [ou Carbon Copy, no inglês]: Utilizado quando é necessário enviar uma cópia do e-mail para outra pessoa. Também neste caso, todos poderão ver a quem o e-mail foi endereçado.
• CCO (Cópia Cabono Oculta) [ou BCC = Blind Carbon Copy, no inglês]: Utilizado para enviar e-mail para um ou mais destinatários, porém, nesta opção, os destinários não poderão ver a quem mais o e-mail foi endereçado. Esta é melhor maneira de enviar e-mails a várias pessoas sem correr o risco de spammers capturarem os endereços de seus contatos.

Pronto! Está aí uma dica simples para manter a sua conta de e-mail e a dos seus contatos longe de problemas!

Hace tiempo, me invitó Linda Castañeda a participar en el Ciclo de Conferencias TIC y Educación Social de la Universidad de Murcia, que se está celebrando entre el 2 y el 26 de noviembre de este año, en el marco de la asignatura “Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación y la Educación Social”. Evidentemente, acepté encantado y agradecido. Pero, como lamentablemente no podré estar físicamente allí ese día, lo haremos por videoconferencia.

Y andaba yo pensando lo absurdo que es, a veces, no proporcionar previamente la base de la charla que se vaya a dar. Si hablamos de TIC, de más allá de la escuela ¿por qué esperar al 16 de noviembre para facilitar material que va a estar detrás de lo que vamos a comentar? Así que, por si sirve para algo irlo viendo, pensando, revisando o criticando. Incluso por si alguien quiere adelantarse y que vayamos comentando el tema, la base sobre la que charlaremos está en lo que enumero a continuación. Puede que así, en forma enumerativa, parezcan temas inconexos. Pero no lo son, ni mucho menos. En el fondo, todos tratan de lo mismo:

• Vigilar y castigar. El nacimiento de la prisión, libro de Michel Foucault del que ya hablé en este blog y que está completo en PDF en este enlace.
• Experimento de la cárcel de Stanford, del que escribió Illaq en Zooglea, y del que algo también comenté aquí.
• “La pedagogía no tiene la culpa: un análisis de los problemas de la educación en España”, (completo en PDF aquí) artículo de Ana Benito que generó en este blog cierta polémica y sobre el que he vuelto en alguna ocasión.
• Iguales en Las Tres Mil, blog colectivo en el que, como hace tiempo que no escribo en él, me permito decir que creo que es todo un ejemplo de uso de las TIC en contextos desfavorecidos. Papel de las TIC como herramientas de educación social.
• Educación Expandida y la experiencia del Banco Común de Conocimientos que vivimos el pasado curso, y del que también hablamos por aquí. En breve se va a estrenar “La escuela expandida” en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla. La referencia permanente a este tipo de prácticas educativas me parece inevitable.
• La Secundaria y el Bachillerato a distancia en Andalucía, trabajo en el que llevo este curso y que está suponiendo una manera totalmente distinta de afrontar el uso de las TIC, desde una perspectiva metodológica y una filosofía institucional poco vista. Este tema me ocupará en exclusiva el 2 de diciembre en el Congreso Internacional Web 2.0. Sobre uso y buenas prácticas con TIC. Comentaré en este blog el congreso más adelante.

Pues eso, que aquí tenéis la base de lo que propongo que hablemos, pero no tiene por qué ser en exclusiva de esto. Vamos, que ando tejiendo una propuesta con la materia prima que está arriba. Lo comentaremos el 16 de noviembre. O desde ya…

The College e-Voice would like to proudly announce the arrival of two new members to its ranks:

Shamni Mani and Sarah Rafferty, both of year 11 have both been successful in their applications to join BCC’s first ever student-run journal.

Sarah will be the e-Voice’s first ever dedicated photographer, while Shamni will write features for the e-Voice offering a different view and perspective on things happening at our school, while also snapping a few shots from time to time.

There are also two other potential recruits who could be hired any day now, pending on their applications – without giving too much away, there may be a special Fashion feature in the works from the next two who will join the e-Voice.

Applications are still available but positions are being taken up quickly – if you would like to work for the e-Voice next year, then now is the time to get those applications in.
