Hi folks,

The above is the latest addition to the BCL series. Picking up this project happens to be increasingly difficult. Actually, this shot is a product of pure luck. I set out the other day to reshoot this picture with some more blue:

Resulting in the following image:

It was a race against time. I was loosing light by the minute and had to get into town and to the bridge from which I took this as fast as I could. The lights on Grossmünster (the two tower church) went on the minute I got there… talk about timing …

With this shot, I roamed around a little in order to find other interesting subjects and maybe something to add to BCL. The plan was to get to the piers on the lake to catch some long exposures of the boats slightly bouncing on the waves. In the meantime I put the tripod away and cranked the sensitivities up a big notch to snap some of the early evening activity… this is when I came across this one pier. I snapped a wide open high ISO security shot, such as not to loose it… the girl turned around but didn’t seem to care. As later turned out, she was quite nice indeed. I redeployed the artillery and reshot it with proper depth of field and on base sensitivity. I’m still somewhat limited by the means here, since my stuff is 270 Km south. All I got is the 50D with a standard zoom and a tripod. And the 50D, as nice a camera as it might be, doesn’t like high sensitivities.

So, this is how BCL evolved so far, but I must say, I’m confronted to a blatant lack of inspiration lately. I’ve shot the clichee stuff in form of Paradeplatz and the Cable Car, I’ve played with the cool lights I found and I got lucky every once in a while… now I don’t know where to take it anymore. I guess it’s time for a change of perspective. I’ll let this cook on small flame for a while and get a go on something different. I got a few ideas to go on, we’ll see how it turns out. In the meantime, I’ll be roaming around the city on daytime a bit, so don’t be surprised if it get’s a little streety here.

Anyhow lot’s of new stuff coming up, so stay posted!

The last week of October is already a time that will be always remembered for the darkest events of Bangladeshi politics took place in 2006 after Awami League activists took the streets at today’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s call of ‘Logi Boitha Protest’. Six members from Awami League’s political opponents lost lives after being severely beaten by logi-boitha. Later Awami League claimed they also lost an activist in countrywide political clashes.

The photo above shows Mainuddin, a student of Finance 11th Batch in Dhaka University whom their  League ‘intutions’ considered as an activist of Hizbut Tahrir, the recently banned Islamic outfit, is left fallen on the street after a group of Bangladesh Chhatro League (BCL) activists launched attack on him. After the Awami League government took office, the target list of BCL was limited to Jatiyotabadi Chhatro Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Chhatro Shibir, whom they have even killed more than a dozen of in last months. Now it appears that the recent ban on Hizbut Tahrir by the government has lifted the organization’s status to be a political opponent of BCL and now its activists are becoming assaults targes no matter if detected only by wild intutions like the one shown above.

Now a question does worth of being asked that, the recent ban that Awami League government has put on Hizbut Tahrir to operate any further, has it been just a ban or a license issued for Chhatro League to assault them or anyone calling him a ‘Hizbut Tahrir’ and for the progressive-cum-hypocrite news bodies like Prothom Alo and Daily Star to keep mum seeing Hizbut Tahrir men bleeding on the streets?

News agencies keeping mum?

BDNews24 appears to be one of our the news-bodies who give the highest exposure of how Islamic outfits 'mashroomed' in Bangladesh. But a DU student brutally beaten and thrown bleeding on streets just because Chhatro League (BCL) suspected him to be Hizbut Tahrir, doesn't appear to be worthy of an exposure.

After coming by the incident I searched for details in a handful of news sites and astonishingly it was almost nowhere. A site called Khilafah.com, the Daily Star, Jaijaidin and The Independent were all who reported it. Many other news agencies especially BDNews24 who has got much of the acclaim of a 24-hour news site, I don’t know whether this was a failure of a deliberate ignorance, has not published anything about it. I mean, have the days come that a Dhaka University student is beaten brutally on the streets by ruling party student wing at broad daylight and it ain’t something to appear in news sites?

There are a couple of actions I find myself doing over and over again when it comes to strings and frankly, its becoming rather annoying writing the same lines of code over and over again for every application I create.

So, I have created a few of useful (at least for me) Extension Methods that encapsulate the reoccurring logic.

If you are not familiar with extension methods, its a great way introduced in .NET 3.5 to add functionality to an already existing type.
You typically use these methods to attach functionality to types you dont have access to their source code, those could be types in the .NET’s BCL, in a 3rd party library or even your own code you dont think this addition merits a change to the source.

So here are mine:

IsEmpty

This is a simple one born from pure laziness . While i was working on an application recently I got tired writing

if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(str))…

for the hundredth time so I created an Extension method for the String type that does just that, now i can write it in shorter way:

CsvToList

Working with configuration files quite allot I noticed that many times im passing a collection of (usually) comma separated values in a single string and then to parse this list im using the String.Split method.
What you usually need to do with the split method is provide a separator character or an array of these separators and optionally use the StringSplitOptions enumeration.

Doing this once is fine but what if you need to do this more than that? here’s my solution:

Probably could have found a better name for it. This method lets you specify the start and end index of the sub-string to extract from the original string.
When manipulating strings and extracting sub-strings from other strings this method could come quite handy.

Conclusion

None of these methods I presented in this article are revolutionary by any means, their purpose is to make life a bit easier, especially when like with these examples you find yourself writing the same couple lines of code over and over again.
If at first it seems unnecessary, I promise that after making use of such extension methods youll find them both time saving and convenient to use.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Beta 2 are now available to download.  .NET 4 Beta 2 contains several new BCL features and enhancements in addition to what was included in .NET 4 Beta 1.  Many of these improvements were added in large part due to specific feedback and suggestions reported by customers through Microsoft Connect.

Complex Number

System.Numerics.Complex represents a complex number comprised of a real number and imaginary number.  Complex supports both rectangular coordinates (real and imaginary) and polar coordinates (magnitude and phase measured in radians) and supports arithmetic and trigonometric operations.  Complex numbers are used in a number of areas including high-performance computing, graphing and charting, electrical engineering (e.g. Fourier transforms), and other numerical applications.

Location

System.Device.Location (which can be found in System.Device.dll) enables .NET applications running on Windows 7 to determine the current geo-location (e.g. latitude/longitude) of the device.  Windows 7 supports a number of different location sensors, including GPS devices and WWAN radios, and automatically handles transitioning between different sensors — if multiple sensors are available — to provide the most accurate data for the current situation. .NET applications will be able to use this new API to access the following data (if available): latitude, longitude, altitude, horizontal and vertical accuracy, course, speed, and civic address (i.e. country/region, state/province, city, postal code, street, building, floor level).  Note that we are planning to make some changes to the shape of the location API between Beta 2 and RC, so please keep this in mind as you evaluate and use the Beta 2 location API in apps.  A separate blog post will provide more details on the planned changes for RC.

IObservable<T>

System.IObservable<T> and System.IObserver<T> provide a general mechanism for push-based notifications and can be used to represent push-based, or observable, collections.  Anyone familiar with design patterns will recognize these interfaces as representations of the well-known observer pattern.  IObservable<T> opens up the doors to some exciting new paradigms for event-based and asynchronous programming on .NET.  A great example of this is the Reactive Framework (RX), which is a library of extension methods (not included as part of .NET 4) that implement the LINQ Standard Query Operators and other useful stream transformation functions for IObservable<T>.  F# first-class events also support IObservable<T> and F# includes a library of Observable operators similar to those available in RX.  Imagine being able to do LINQ-style queries against events; this is just one of the kinds of things that IObservable<T> enables.  To help grasp the power of IObservable<T>, I encourage you to watch the Channel 9 videos of Erik Meijer introducing RX and Wes Dyer and Kim Hamilton discussing IObservable<T> in the BCL.

Stream.CopyTo

When working with Streams, how many times have you had to write the following boiler-plate code to read from one stream and write the contents to another stream?

Stream source = ...;
Stream destination = ...;
byte[] buffer = new byte[4096];
int read;
while ((read = source.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) != 0) {
    destination.Write(buffer, 0, read);
}

In .NET 4, you no longer have to write this code.  We’ve added a new CopyTo method to Stream that allows you to simply write:

Stream source = ...;
Stream destination = ...;
source.CopyTo(destination);

Guid.TryParse, Version.TryParse, and Enum.TryParse<T>

We’ve added TryParse to System.Guid, System.Version, and System.Enum.  Enum.TryParse is generic, a nice improvement over the existing non-generic Parse method, which leads to much cleaner code.

On previous versions of .NET, to parse an enum value, you’d write something like this:

On .NET 4, you can use the new generic TryParse method:

Enum.HasFlag

We’ve added a new convenience method to System.Enum that makes it super easy to determine if a flag is set on a particular Flags enum, without having to remember how to use the bitwise operators.  This also allows for more readable code.

String.Concat and String.Join overloads that take IEnumerable<T>

We’ve added new overloads of String.Concat and String.Join that take IEnumerable<T>, adding to the existing overloads that take arrays.  This means you can pass any collection that implements IEnumerable<T> to these APIs without having to first convert the collection into an array.  We’ve also added “params” support to the existing array-based String.Join overload, which allows you to write more succinct code.  In C#:

String.Join(", ", new string[] { "A", "B", "C", "D" }); // you used to have to write this
String.Join(", ", "A", "B", "C", "D"); // now you can write this

String.IsNullOrWhiteSpace

This new convenience method is similar to the existing IsNullOrEmpty method, but in addition to checking if the string is null or empty, it also checks to see if the string only consists of white-space characters, as defined by Char.IsWhiteSpace.  It works great for Code Contract preconditions.

Environment.SpecialFolder additions

We’ve added a number of new values to the Environment.SpecialFolder enum:

AdminTools, CDBurning , CommonAdminTools , CommonDesktopDirectory , CommonDocuments , CommonMusic , CommonOemLinks , , CommonPictures , CommonProgramFilesX86 , CommonPrograms , CommonStartMenu , CommonStartup , CommonTemplates , CommonVideos , Fonts , LocalizedResources , MyVideos , NetworkShortcuts , PrinterShortcuts , ProgramFilesX86 , Resources , SystemX86 , Templates , UserProfile , Windows

We’ve also added a new overload to Environment.GetFolderPath that takes a new SpecialFolderOption enum, allowing you to specify some additional options, such as “Create” (to create the directory if it doesn’t exist) and “DoNotVerify” (to just return the path without checking if it exists, which can help reduce lag time if the directory is on a network share).

Environment.Is64BitProcess and Environment.Is64BitOperatingSystem

These new convenience APIs make it easy to determine the bitness of the current process and operating system.  Environment.Is64BitProcess is equivalent to calling IntPtr.Size == 8.  Environment.Is64BitOperatingSystem will tell you if the underlying OS is 64-bit.  Note that it is possible for Environment.Is64BitProcess to return false and Environment.Is64BitOperatingSystem to return true if the process is a 32-bit process running on a 64-bit operating system under WOW64.

Path.Combine params support

Have you ever had to nest calls to Path.Combine like this:

Path.Combine("dir1", Path.Combine("dir2", Path.Combine("dir3", "dir4")));

With .NET 4, you can simply write:

Path.Combine("dir1", "dir2", "dir3", "dir4");

TimeSpan Globalized Formatting and Parsing

In previous versions of .NET, TimeSpan only supported a single culture-agnostic format for formatting and parsing.  This meant if you called ToString on a French machine the output would not match culture settings, making the application appear not to be globalized.  This is often noticeable in apps that display results from SQL databases that use the frequently used Time column type, because SQL’s Time maps to TimeSpan in .NET.  For example:

Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("fr-FR");
Console.WriteLine(new TimeSpan(0, 1, 1, 1, 1));
Console.WriteLine(12.34);

Output:

01:01:01.0010000
12,34

The output from TimeSpan.ToString is a culture-agnostic format so it uses a ‘.’ as the decimal separator, whereas Double uses ‘,’ based on the current culture.

In .NET 4, System.TimeSpan now supports formatting and parsing based on culture settings via new overloads of ToString, Parse, and TryParse, and new ParseExact and TryParseExact methods.  The default ToString overload still behaves the same for backwards compatibility, outputting a constant, culture-agnostic format, but the new overloads allow you to specify additional culture-sensitive formats.  You can pass the “g” format (general format) to the new ToString overload to specify a culture-sensitive format:

Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("fr-FR");
Console.WriteLine(new TimeSpan(0, 1, 1, 1, 1).ToString("g"));
Console.WriteLine(12.34);

Output:

Stopwatch.Restart

This is a new convenience method that is equivalent to calling Stopwatch.Reset followed by Stopwatch.Start.

StringBuilder.Clear

In previous versions of .NET, you could clear StringBuilder by setting the Length property to 0.  This isn’t very discoverable, so we’ve added StringBuilder.Clear as a more discoverable equivalent.

IntPtr and UIntPtr Addition and Subtraction operators

Adding an offset to an IntPtr or UIntPtr can be error prone and often introduces subtle bugs on 64-bit machines if not done correctly.  .NET 4 includes addition and subtraction operators on these types, along with Add and Subtract methods, to help prevent these kinds of errors.

ServiceProcessInstaller.DelayedAutoStart

.NET-based services that start automatically can now set a new DelayedAutoStart property to true (recommended), which will delay auto-starting the service until after other auto-start services are started plus a short delay to improve system boot performance when running on Vista or greater.

ObservableCollection<T> moved to System.dll

We’ve type-forward System.Collections.ObjectModel.ObservableCollection<T>, System.Collections.ObjectModel.ReadOnlyObservableCollection<T>, and System.Collections.Specialized.INotifyCollectionChanged from WindowsBase.dll (a WPF assembly) to System.dll.  This allows you to use these collections without taking a dependency on a WPF assembly and enables a cleaner separation between model and view.

In BCL 4.0, there’s still no Unfold method (boooo), but at least there’s a Zip extension method to keep us warm as winter draws on.

I played with it thusly:

    var list1 = new[] { 1, 2, 3 };
    var list2 = new[] { "a", "b", "c" };
    var both = list1.Zip(list2, (first, second) => new { first, second });
    foreach (var item in both)
        Console.WriteLine(item);

Then I thought, what about these new fangled tuples? Shouldn’t there be an overload of Zip that only takes two lists and is smart enough to return a binary tuple?

Then I realised there’s not really much need, because you can ask for that to happen very succinctly already:

var both = list1.Zip(list2, Tuple.Create);

This is not technically that astounding, because it’s just an example of a pre-defined function happening to fit the delegate required by some method. No big deal.

But in another way, it is a big deal, because of the generality of it. Suppose you have a generic method that accepts a delegate as one of its parameters, and that delegate must accept some fixed number of parameters of specific types, but can return any type. Sometimes you just want to be able to say “Oh, whatever they are, just stick them together and I’ll figure out what to do with them later”. Well, now that wish has a name, and it’s name is Tuple.Create. And this is applicable for any method that takes a delegate that takes up to 8 parameters and can return a value of unconstrained type.

Sometimes I just want to cry at the beauty of functions-as-first-class-objects.

Pourtant, au vu des spécialités de la Place, il n’est pas du tout évident que le Luxembourg souffre plus que d’autres centres financiers. Ici, on gère des fonds (le Luxembourg est la deuxième place au monde pour l’administration de fonds), on bichonne les grandes fortunes. On n’est pas vraiment branché banque d’investissement, quoi. Et c’est ces dernières qui ont le plus trinqué.

On pourrait se dire que c’est parce que les grands pays européens ont bien fait leur boulot : ils ont culpabilisé les détenteurs de comptes dans les paradis fiscaux qui, depuis, ont boudé le Luxembourg. Ben, pas vraiment. Les dépôts dans les banques luxembourgeoises ont diminué de 3% depuis le début de la crise, il y a un an. C’est moins que la moyenne de la zone euro. C’est d’ailleurs plutôt une bonne nouvelle pour la Place qui un –un peu – craint que l’affaire Madoff ne soit néfaste auprès de ses clients. Ça aurait d’ailleurs dû lui être néfaste pour des raisons qui mériteraient que je leur consacre un billet, un jour.

Si la confiance des clients est toujours à peu près là, qu’est-ce qui cloche ? Déjà, le système bancaire plus que surdimensionné pour plus pays (grosso modo 40% du PIB). La banque de détail ne peut donc pas servir d’amortisseur aux chocs. Mais Yves Mersch a insisté sur une autre raison, toute simple. Les 146 banques répertoriées dans le pays sont presque exclusivement des filiales de grands groupes. «Nous subissons une stratégie décidée à l’étranger », rappelle le directeur de la BCL.

Et ces banques étrangères viennent de connaître une année de cauchemar. Beaucoup ont mis en place des réductions de coût et d’activité. Et, reflexe normal, elles rapatrient dans leur siège une partie des activités restantes. Ce qui laisse «moins de marge de manœuvre» pour leur filiale luxembourgeoise, note Yves Mersch.

Et les banques luxembourgeoises n’ont pas fini de souffrir des difficultés de leurs maisons-mère. «Les banques luxembourgeoises sont plus profitables. Il se pourrait qu’il y ait des transferts de risque» des maisons-mère vers leurs filiales luxembourgeoises, estime que directeur de la BCL qui ajoute que ceci «n’est pour l’instant que des conjectures» qui ne sont pas étayées par des chiffres. Ces chiffres, il les attend pour la fin de l’année : les provisions des banques luxembourgeoises pour défaut de paiement devraient exploser. A suivre, donc.

Bagi penggemar Bunga, ini merupakan penyegaran tersendiri setelah lama ia menghilang dari sinetron-sinetron yang pernah digelutinya beberapa tahun terakhir. Gosip yang beredar,  sinetron Bayu Cinta Luna bakalan beredar untuk menggantikan sinetron Melati untuk Marvel yang sebentar lagi akan habis masa tayangnya.

Walaupun membantah jika dirinya adalah pemicu keretakan hubungan kasih antara Nabila Syakieb dengan Yuri Ihza Mahendra, namun Ashraf Sinclair kabarnya membuat sang istri, Bunga Citra Lestari, cemburu dan marah padanya. Hal itu sempat menjadi berita di sebuah tabloid tanah air.

Interoperability

      Because interaction between new and older applications is commonly required, the .NET Framework provides means to access functionality that is implemented in programs that execute outside the .NET environment. Common Runtime Engine

      The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is the virtual machine component of the .NET framework. All .NET programs execute under the supervision of the CLR, guaranteeing certain properties and behaviors in the areas of memory management, security, and exception handling.

Language Independence

      The .NET Framework introduces a Common Type System, or CTS. The CTS specification defines all possible datatypes and programming constructs supported by the CLR and how they may or may not interact with each other. Because of this feature, the .NET Framework supports the exchange of instances of types between programs written in any of the .NET languages.

Base Class Library

      The Base Class Library (BCL), part of the Framework Class Library (FCL), is a library of functionality available to all languages using the .NET Framework. The BCL provides classes which encapsulate a number of common functions, including file reading and writing, graphic rendering, database interaction and XML document manipulation.

Simplified Deployment

      The .NET framework includes design features and tools that help manage the installation of computer software to ensure that it does not interfere with previously installed software, and that it conforms to security requirements.

Security

      The design is meant to address some of the vulnerabilities, such as buffer overflows, that have been exploited by malicious software. Additionally, .NET provides a common security model for all applications.

Portability

      The design of the .NET Framework allows it to theoretically be platform agnostic, and thus cross-platform compatible. That is, a program written to use the framework should run without change on any type of system for which the framework is implemented. Microsoft’s commercial implementations of the framework cover Windows, Windows CE, and the Xbox 360. In addition, Microsoft submits the specifications for the Common Language Infrastructure (which includes the core class libraries, Common Type System, and the Common Intermediate Language), the C# language, and the C++/CLI language to both ECMA and the ISO, making them available as open standards.
