Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. today (Oct. 26) announced that they are joining forces to make movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed to TVs via the PlayStation 3 (PS3) gaming system.

Netflix plans to begin streaming via PS3 next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

According to Netflix, the PS3 installed base has reached nearly 9 million units in the U.S. And Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership will enable consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation Network.

For $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered to their homes.

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members.

The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are organized into categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues.

Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or play directly from any of the lists.

They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by mail, generally one business day after members request it.

The latest and perhaps last internet feature (not to be confused with Lost’s previous ARGs) for the show LOST will be starting on December 8th to coincide with the release of Season 5 on DVD and Blu-ray, but you would be surprised to know that some people may not be able to participate. The upcoming internet feature is called Lost University, which will allow students to study several aspects of the show much the same as if LU were a real school. If you are interested in enrolling and getting a student picture ID, you can do that now by going to lostuniversity.org. Some of the classes that will be offered at LU include Introductory Physics of Time Travel, Jungle Survival Basics, a seminar on New Physics with Jeremy Davies, and an Art seminar with Jack Bender along with several other classes. I am definitely excited and I can’t wait to start my first day at LU and be a Fightin’ Islish… I’m sorry for the lame joke I couldn’t resist. Unfortunately while I and several other LOST fans will be able to participate in this awesome new internet feature, many people who cannot afford Blu-ray players will not be able to participate. According to to school website Lost University will run as a Bd-Live feature utilizing the internet connectivity of the PS3 and other Blu-ray players to integrate the website into the Blu-ray versions of season 5. Upon hearing the news many people were outraged that after going through free internet features in the past suddenly they will be left out because they don’t want to purchase a Blu-ray player. I want to ask the readers now what do you guys think? Is it wrong to force people to purchase a new expensive device and to alienate those who do not have this special device? Or, are you on the side that says that new technology should be embraced by the media, and if some people are left out in the cold because they need to purchase something new then so be it, if they had it there way season 5 would be coming out on VHS? What do you think of this? I’ll leave my opinions in the comments section.

As I’ve already done a complete review of Zack Snyder’s adaptation of the Alan Moore penned, Dave Gibbons illustrated graphic novel Watchmen, to be found here, and as this director’s cut of the movie, released to DVD and Blu-ray this week doesn’t alter my fundamental opinion of the movie, I won’t repeat myself for this review. Suffice to say, I still regard it as one of the very best superhero themed films I’ve seen to date, and as of this writing, one of the best films of 2009. This director’s cut, which I saw as part of a Zack Snyder moderated live screening at Comic Con in San Diego on July 25, broadcast via the BD-Live feature on the Blu-ray, features 24 minutes of extra footage, though that doesn’t include the Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood footage. The latter footage will presumably be worked into an even longer cut, suggestions of which were evident in this current cut. (Snyder pointed out a transition point between Freighter and the greater narrative.) The most significant new footage, initially cut for time, is a striking sequence detailing the fate of the characters. Other footage added to the film extends some scenes, adding more dialogue here and there, and generally adding more character and story detail. Though the director’s cut has a running time in excess of three hours, it doesn’t feel significantly longer than the theatrical cut, which is a credit to the skill with which the additional footage has been woven in. All in all, it’s an excellent movie made better.

With regard to the BD-Live aspect of the screening, it was essentially the movie featuring a gray chat box superimposed over the top of the frame, with Snyder making comments and taking questions about the movie as it unfolded. When he wasn’t gushing over his cast and crew, he was enthusiastic and funny, and provided a frequently insightful and often funny commentary. It would have been nice to have had more of a sense of the atmosphere at the Comic Con screening, perhaps an audience shot or two, or even sound piped in from it, but otherwise it was an interesting, mostly successful experiment.

MONKEY RATING: ONE WATCHMEN MONKEY

So why was I left unsatisfied after squinting at my TV for two and a half hours? To refresh, BD-Live is the Blu-ray technology that allows for more interactive special features on your disc, like being able to arrange “screenings” with your friends or record commentary tracks yourself.” {link}

When I first heard of Blu-ray discs, I simply shrugged it off as yet another new technology fad that

When I first heard of Blu-ray discs, I simply shrugged it off as yet another new technology fad that’ll soon tone down. But I was mistaken for when I visited the DVD stores I found a whole shelf dedicated to blu-ray titles. What piqued my curiosity about Blu-ray was the numerous articles I had come across as part of the domain research.

I won’t go into the nitty-gritty of what is Blu-ray but suffice to say I’d like to voice out my thoughts on BD Live/BDJ and their growing impact on social networking. The most interesting news I’ve seen so far in this space was Warner Bros initiative to release ‘Watchmen’ with BD Live features that integrate it with Facebook. Apart from amazing picture and sound qualities these discs have to offer, the new features enable existing Blu-ray users to:

Connect their BD Buddy community to their Facebook community

Organize joint movie viewings, exchange comments while watching a movie or in certain movies have a live chat session with the Director

Download lots of marketing material like the posters, wallpapers, ringtones etc on the go with a Blu-ray Disc.

Cool isn’t it?!! Compared to your normal DVD with its 2D interactivity where the menu and its options are preset, BD offers you a 3D outlook with the chance to add to the content existing on the disc and you can download your choice of content.

Other possibilities that could be explored in terms of making the movie more interactive is:

Make your own endings – DVDs come with 2-3 alternate endings which you can view via the menu option. What if I want to view the movie with my favorite alternate ending? I can either download the alternate scene online or select it from the menu, and maybe select an option ‘play the movie with alternative ending’. This would let me watch the movie with my favorite ending scene. Wouldn’t this be useful while watching a movie like ‘Atonement’ or ‘X-Men: Origins’??

Also what if I want to watch the movie with the deleted scenes? Is it possible to introduce the snippets into the actual movie?

Join a Live Discussion Forum – I haven’t done any groundwork on if this feature is available presently but if I were the type of person who’d love to start a discussion forum on the movie or join one, can I get the option to do it via the BD Live option?

Integrating Web 2.0 features with BD Live is another possibility. Its quite endless since the technology behind all this is BD Java. Now whatever little understanding I have of Java from technical angle, I know for sure it presents a huge scope to represent your imagination!

Anime series on Blu-ray – Fans of Pokemon or Dragonball will get a chance to explore interactive features like maybe playing around with the players power levels or evolving a pokemon with Blu-ray. And the marketing material that can be pushed to the users can be endless in case of the Anime.

The ones I’ve listed out here are just what I felt are the possibilities with BD J technology. And these are just the tip of the iceberg so to say!

While all these factors add to the zing, I wondered how far people would really utilize all these amazing features that the major studios are currently dabbling with.

Do you really have the time to connect with BD Live mates with your Facebook mates and actually have such detailed discussions on a movie? Unless you are an ardent fan of the Spiderman or say X-Men, would you really bother having a live discussion with the director or the cast? Not to mention the cost factor, higher functionality would mean a premium price and a new BD player that would also have to play your old DVD collection.

So while movie trivia or interviews by directors might certainly not be my concern, I’d surely be interested if the disc offered a couple of casual or PC based games that I could play on my laptop or a game console. Apart from the downloadable content, this is another option which I would deem as value for money, considering I’m shelling out money for a disc with space worth 50GB.
