Nice to see one out on the road being used on a cold, damp January day. Before long (thanks to some skilful and strategic progress making tactics) we arrived at the NEC just as the show was opening. Here’s Henry and Shane at the entrance whilst Dave went to the loo:

So in we went. Here is my experience of the 2013 Autosport International Show: The first object of interest that caught out attention was at the MSV stand in the shape of the new Formula 4 single seat race car which was revealed on the thursday:

The car has been designed to be a customer car for a new low cost race series for new drivers to cut their teeth in. The whole car as you see here (with a Ford Duratec Engine) costs just £30,000, which when you consider that you’ll be spending almost double that for a Formula Ford Ecoboost, makes this seriously attractive.

And already it has proved to be a hit as only 20 cars were planned to be produced, but when they were all sold, they decided to make 4 more which have since also sold. So they have a packed grid, and with 8 race meetings a year and 3 races per weekend, it’s not as if the buyers aren’t going to get their monies worth either! It certainly isn’t built cheaply though, featuring adjustable aerodynamics and a pneumatically shifting sequential gearbox which you can see here:

It definitely looks like this’ll be a series to watch in the coming year! On the same stand was a DTM car which if you’ll remember from last years post was a Mercedes C Class, but this year (and probably due to it’s immediate success in DTM) it was the BMW M3 that was on the stand. I think everyone agreed that it’s a bit of a looker too:

A little further along from the MSV stand was Radicals stand, and of course they had their new road car which they revealed the previous day on display. The RXC:

With a Ford 3.7l V6 pushing out 380hp and a kerb weight of only 900kg, it’ll do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and go on to 178mph. Pretty mental for a road car:

The next new arrival at the show was also the most bloody difficult to photograph owing to crap lighting and awkward placing of barriers. But it was also the most interesting one from a large manufacturer. The Bentley Continental GT3:

An awesome looking creature and it was definitely worth getting a decent photo of it (I was practically laid down on the floor for that shot so I didn’t get a barrier in shot). The next photo was a little easier to take:

I can’t wait to see it racing with McLarens and Porsches this year.

The next stand me and Shane went to was the Maxxis Tyres stand, who (like every year) had a decent selection of drift cars from the BDC (British Drift Championship) to draw the crowds in. Of particular interest was the SATS Motorsport Lucas Oil Supra:

This is a car that is pushing out 1012hp from it’s Cosworth modified Toyota 2JZGTE engine. We spoke to team manager Chris Arthur about the car and he explained that this is actually a side hobby to the main job of race driving instructor but it’s quickly growing to take up much more of his time!

The entire car was built by him with help from a few others and all the technical knowledge he has now was entirely picked up by learning along the way. The car will be competing in the BDC this year and also one round of Formula Drift in the USA.

The next stand was the Jackie Stewart stand with a selection of his previous race cars. Here are a couple of them:

This Aston Martin Vantage Zagato was nearby, still with mud and weeds plastered on in fresh from it’s previous race:

One of the more interesting trade stands was the Pits Top Design Hydrographic Warehouse stand (here’s a link to their website: http://www.pitstopdesigns.co.uk/. The company uses a technique called Water Transferable Printing to print almost any design you want on pretty much anything that can be dipped in water for a length of time. Here are some wheels that they did for the show:

There were also some nice road cars at the event too, here’s a Mercedes C AMG Black series with a matt black paint job (or wrap, didn’t look close enough to tell) that everyone seemed to want to touch for some reason:

And then I stumbled across a car that I have coveted ever since I first saw it when I was 11. The TVR Cerbera Speed 12:

There it was, the only car that I would literally give a testicle to own, and the bloody thing is the same colour as the floor and ruined in all my photos. Still, at the time I didn’t care, I was just in awe of the thing.

How on earth did a company like TVR make a car that has over 800hp and has a maximum speed of over 240mph in the year 2000? It boggles the mind how they could have done it considering how “men in sheds” like they were.

Another car that piqued mine and Shane’s interest as we walked around was this Dodge Viper engined S15 Silvia drift car:

The car is driven, maintained and was built by David Waterworth, who decided that he needed a change after coming 3rd in the Silverstone round of the BDC in an S13. And what a change that was! The car is believed to be the only one of it’s kind in the world and presented some unique engineering challenges to overcome before it could be driven. We spoke to David at the show, and he explained that one of the issues was an overheating steering rack – this was due to the obvious increase in engine size leaving only 5mm of clearance between the sump of the engine and the steering rack, so it was heating the rack like a radiator and so a cooler had to be added for the rack. All the effort was worth it though, as David explained that it’s ridiculously easy to get into a drift and will hold a slide at just 1000rpm above idle, and will lap Knockhill sliding in the same time that it will grip driving (although whether that’s just because the car is now so front heavy that it understeers if not drifting, he didn’t say). It is a bit expensive though, as it costs between £4-500 per outing of the car! I managed to find the build thread for the car which you can see HERE and took a picture of the spec sheet for you all to see:

Just around the corner, Pop Bang Colour was doing his yearly live art piece with his remote control cars and bits of toy cars. This year it’s of a Caterham:

More on that later though.

Another interesting trade stand was for a company that made furniture and sculptures out of bits of old F1 cars. Here’s a sculpture of a cows head made from carbon fibre pieces, a Hans device and bits of exhaust:

And a hat/coat stand made from one of Mark Webbers Monaco race winning wheels, still with the same calliper and brake disc used inside:

Nearby was the frankly mental Land Rover based Bowler EXR-S, sporting 22 inch wheels and a 510hp 5.0 litre Jaguar V8, I suspect this will be the next thing that the arabs are buying up in huge numbers since they love dune driving so much over there:

Not a bad interior though, considering it’s meant to be a stripped out racer as well as road car:

Moving on from road cars and fancy hat stands, we walked on to the Formula 1 part of the show to be greeted by the McLaren MP27 (2011 car) sat infront of me:

And just across (as you’d expect) was the McLaren stand, where we met a very nice guy called Hugh who works in the McLaren F1 team in logistics. We had a very lengthy conversation with him about all aspects of working for McLaren and his experiences. He was surprisingly open about it all and was even more so when we asked him if Alonso really was as bad as everyone made out. I shan’t repeat what he said here though but I’m sure you can imagine why…..

Also in the Formula 1 area were the former race cars of Michael Schumacher:

Sennas car was one of the few that caused me to stop and stare for a few moments.

And then Shane’s inner chav got excited when he spotted a saxo and just HAD to have his picture taken with it, bless him:

Brake discs have always been some of the more interesting components on show at the Autosport show, and this year was no exception as we found these “S Vane” discs on the AP Racing stand:

The official blurb from the website says this about them: “A new Sinusoidal Vane cast iron disc has been developed for Nascar, with others due to follow in Touring Car, GT and Rally classes. Running between 70-100°C cooler than the old design, the new S Vane disc provides a significant improvement in brake performance, wear rate and reliability.” They are also very good for interesting close up shots:

And then me and Shane finally came across the stand for our motorsport engineering course:

We then harassed the Formula Ford team manager Andy:

And helped sell the course to a few prospecting students and apply some new Penske stickers to the car:

Next port of call was the live action arena, and on the way we passed by the Caterham Experience track to see unwitting members of the trade be thrown around sideways and round in circles. It looked like hilarious fun:

I didn’t bother trying to take any pictures in the live action arena as 1. it was too dark and 2. I wanted to get my moneys worth out of the £10 extra we paid to get in. It was a decent enough show (apart from the TERRIBLE hosts who couldn’t deliver a decent motorsport pun if they’d been run over by one) featuring stock cars, drifting, a monster truck and some reliant robin racing (which also was the most entertaining part of the show).

After the show (and a quick dash to the loo), we came out to find the Nissan Delta Wing show car:

I thought it looked a bit odd as we walked up to it and it was only when we noticed the driver and passenger cockpits just being flat plastic (not inserts, these were moulded to the rest of the body) that it was confirmed it wasn’t real (or at least didn’t look like it, I’ll be happy to be corrected!).  Still, I supposed it at least showed how it looks and the size of it.

Over on the Richard Burns Collection stand were the two Imprezas he drove:

After staring at these two for a moment, it was into the Engineering Show hall. The first stand we went to was the CES Europe stand, a company which supplies Formula 1 teams with gas bottles, fuel rigs and other pneumatic equipment.

We had an interesting and lengthy chat with the guys about various aspects of the equipment such as safety, weight (especially when comparing the difference between the metal and carbon fibre bottles) and regulations.

We also talked about the politics of supplying various Formula 1 teams and were interested to discover that Ferrari are the only ones that won’t deal with suppliers directly, instead they have to talk to outsourced procurement companies which can apparently make things interesting at least. Then pitstops were brought up and the subject of why McLaren were making so many mistakes last year. This brought us on to a new type of wheel gun which has a spring loaded lever on the handle, so when the gunner wants to change the direction that the gun spins, they only have to slightly release their grip on the handle instead of use their other hand to whack a button as they have to with existing guns, saving precious milliseconds. The technology is patented so it’s ok for it to be talked about, and here are some pictures:

The black part of the handle is the spring loaded lever, and the button on the right is so that if the lever is released accidentally, the gunner can quickly change the direction back again by hitting the button against his knee.

This is an existing wheel gun which has a button either side to change direction as per normal guns:

I think we spent almost an hour chatting to the guys on the stand in the end! Once we left there, we found an exploded display of the Bugatti Veyron’s W16 engine:

Another stand we visited was the Stand 21 race safety wear stand, where we had another lengthy chat with Romain Morizot from the french company about their safety equipment and how it’s changed and advanced over the years. Here’s Shane having a look at some Hans devices (the company is one of only 2 that are licensed by the FIA to manufacture them):

And this is a race suit that has been fire tested by some one wearing it and then being set on fire (obviously with the whole body covered) with no resulting injuries:

After this we talked with a couple of fuel cell companies to find out what developments had  taken place in their manufacturing sector. This was basically weight saving and tougher materials. Shane even managed to convince one company to give him a free novelty 1 litre fuel cell! Cheeky sod.

The final companies we spoke to were Lifeline and Racetech.

Lifeline were incredibly helpful and ridiculously knowledgable about all aspects of motorsport safety, not just their main specialism in fire extinguishing systems. We talked about the advances in extinguishing material, going through the change from Halon (which whilst no longer being manufactured, is still in use in the aviation and military sectors, and due to no longer being manufactured, all halon in use is entirely recycled due to it’s environmental impact), through to foam and onto the current Novec systems. Novec is a gas type fire extinguisher, although below 49 degrees centigrade, it’s a liquid and only turns to a gas above that. It can disperse and starve a fire very quickly. The only issue with it is that unlike foam which smothers the source, Novec disperses after a certain time and can’t prevent re-flash (where the fire re-ignites) but this issue is negated in top level motorsport by the number of trained marshalls around a track with foam extinguishers.

Then we spoke to Racetech who had their new FIA approved seat on display, which is the only one in the world that currently has a built in fixture allowing it to be bolted directly to a roll cage to prevent the flexing of the top of the seat in a crash:

Racetech was the last company we spoke to, and by this time it was about half 5 and almost time to leave. So we quickly stopped by Pop Bang Colour to see how he was getting on with the days artwork. He was pretty much finished by the time we got there:

I love his work. I mean, what kind of artist looks at a remote control car and thinks….. “Hmmm, that’s a paint brush!” – He’s even done a Pistonheads smiley logo today. There was one last stop at the BDC stand to try and speak to a guy that Shane wanted to about job opportunities. We didn’t find who we were looking for but we did find Japspeed drivers Shane Lynch and Steve Biagioni!

Nice guys they were too! And then it was to the exit, and here’s a photo of something that the visitors today and yesterday would never have seen, SPACE!

And that was the end of my visit to the 2013 Autosport show. No doubt I’ll be back next year with Shane and Henry as this year was the best yet.

I have to give a huge thank you to all the people we spoke to at the show, for giving up their time to chat to two students who probably just looked like they were there to time waste along with all the other hundreds of students that were there. Couldn’t have met a nicer or more helpful bunch of people.

As a side note on the photography side of things, I apologise for the amount of noise and the softness of the photos. Unfortunately my Nikon D200 seems to have an issue with shooting at any ISO setting above 200, and since I was shooting all day at 400, this was a major issue. Also, this wasn’t helped by me choosing to shoot with JPEG files instead of RAW, which made the problem even worse due to compression. So for next time, I’ll be getting a new camera body that isn’t broken, and will be shooting the proper way, with RAW files. Also, as I was behind the camera, Shane does indeed feature in most of the photos, especially of those with women (that was his special interest of the day!) so sorry I happen to be a bit camera shy! This is what I want you to change: Stop waiting for and chasing ups!

Waiting for ups is a losing game. If your goal is to earn $100,000 a year selling cars, your selling habits have to change to make that possible.

What do you have to change? As the saying goes, just about everything. I guarantee you, however, if you do the payoff will be significant – for you and the dealership employing you!

The bad math of ups selling

Earning $100K or more a year selling cars these days is entirely possible. Didn’t you become a car sales professional because you wanted to control your destiny and get well paid for the effort?

Well, let me ask you, how’s that plan going for you?

How many units do most sales associates sell these days, six to eight a month? Considering today’s mini commissions on new car sales and tighter margins on used units, only an unmarried person living rent-free with mom and dad can make it long term selling just six to eight units a month.

Here’s the math. A typical new-car mini commission of $100 times eight new car sales a month equals $800. Even if half those sales were used units with commissions of $800 per vehicle plus four-new sales with $100 minis, the total monthly commission check would be $3,600 (minus any shared F&I). Better for sure, but you didn’t get into car sales to earn just $43K a year did you?

A better formula

If you want to earn $100K a year and really enjoy selling cars for a living, here’s how I suggest you change your selling process.

1. Stop relying on ups for your business.  Forget the huddles and other activities sales people love to cling to but are counterproductive and true attitude killers!
2. Focus your core sales opportunities on customers you’ve sold already as well as other customers residing in the customer database. This is the list of customers and prospects you likely inherited from the associate whose seat you took or was handed to you by your sales manager.
3. Develop a work plan that focuses 75 percent of your time on prospecting new business from this database. Limit your time for showroom ups to a minimum; they feel productive but too often are not, which you know all too well.
4. Consider a work plan that segments customers in your database to those having done business with you or the dealership within the last 90, 60 and 30 days. Using customer letter templates in your dealership CRM, write your own customized message to customers in each group. Reintroduce yourself. Use the occasion to invite them by your desk for a complimentary oil-change coupon or other enticing offer or gift. Be sure to follow up via email or mail each month – your goal is to keep your name in front of your customer!  Ninety percent of the customers a dealership engages will never hear from that dealership or that sales associate again, creating a rich opportunity for any associate who wants to chart their future for a profitable life selling cars.
5. Develop good phone skills. Learn to prospect current customers’ households, as the average household in America has three other vehicle owners or drivers, all potential business for a sales associate willing to go after it.
6. Develop better interpersonal skills. You’d think a professional sales person would be adept at fluid conversation, but even I sometimes have to “fake it ‘til I make it” when it comes to engaging with strangers. Yet it is this kind of personal charisma that can be developed and that the $100,000-a-year sales pros use every day in all kinds of situations outside the dealership to promote themselves.

My final suggestion is valid whether you take me up on my challenge or chose to pursue your status quo, and it is this:

Maximize every minute of your day on the job. To earn $100,000 selling cars eight hours a day, five days a week, recognize that your time value is 92 cents or so a minute.  How you go about maximizing the potential of those 2,400 minutes a week is up to you.

You can fiddle too much of those precious minutes away hoping you’ll get the next up or you can prospect the sales opportunities residing in your database, working customer households and customer referrals, all potential new business for the sales associate who truly wants to earn $100,000 or more a year selling cars.
