“Experience is the best teacher” The second session of the 2011 BDM 102K Ultramarathon Race Lecture

“Experience is the best teacher”

The second session of the 2011 BDM 102K Ultramarathon Race Lecture will be held this coming Friday, October 22, 2010 in one of the Function Rooms of the Philippine Army Officers’ Clubhouse, Headquarters Philippine Army, Fort Bonifacio. The lecture will start at 6:00 PM and ends at 7:00 PM.

I have invited two distinguished guest lecturers whom I consider as well-experienced in the field of ultramarathon events since the start of the BDM 102 and other PAU Races for the past two years. The first lecturer is Gene Olvis who had been consistently joining the BDM 102 and PAU races. He will impart to the audience about his training and preparation for the BDM 102 races as well as his experiences during the race. On the other hand, I have invited Bea Hernandez, the wife of ultramarathoner Mark, who will discuss her tips and experiences on being a Support Crew to his husband to the recent BDM 102 and PAU Races.

All “first-timers” for the BDM 102 and those who are still waiting for their invitation are highly encouraged to listen and be a part of this lecture. BDM 102 “veterans” who are qualified for the 1st BDM 151 are also encouraged to join this lecture.

(Note: The Secretariat of the 2011 BDM 102 event will be present during the lecture and applicants for the BDM 102 who have not yet received their “invitation” can coordinate with them. The Secretariat will also be there to receive and process registration for the 4th PAU 50K Run/”T2N”)

The 1st Lecture for the 2011 BDM 102 was conducted last October 1, 2010 in one of the Function Rooms of the Philippine Army’s Officers’ Clubhouse. It started on time at 6:00 PM in the presence of 15 runner-participants & applicants.

I personally conducted the lecture with the topics, History & Honesty. The following is the summary of the lecture:

History

Based from my readings in history books and personal accounts of survivors of the Bataan Death March of 1942, I discussed to the attendants about the history of the event that happened from April 9-24, 1942 which resulted to the killing and death of an estimated 20,000 POWs during the March and ultimately, during the POWs stay in their Concentration Camp at Camp O’Donnell, Tarlac. These POWs during the March was a combination of Filipinos, Americans, Chinese-Filipinos, and civilians. Literally, these POWs were made to “march” for a distance of 102 kilometers from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga; transported by train from San Fernando, Pampanga to Capas, Tarlac; alighted from the Railway Station; and then marched/walked for another 11 kilometers from Capas Poblacion to Camp O’Donnell.

This unfortunate event during the World War II was considered as the most barbaric act in violation of the treatment of POWs as provided by Geneva Act. The people responsible for this dastardly acts during the Bataan Death March were tried by Military Tribunal/Court after the war and they were executed to their death. However, this event in history will be always remembered and commemorated.

The history of the BDM 102K Ultramarathon Event was also discussed with the emphasis that the commemoration of this important event should be done in the very place where the event happened. Some countries had been using BDM as the title of their running events but they are done in their respective countries. It is for this reason that we should continue commemorating this event in the most practical way which is through running an ultramarathon event. It was initially was a dream but through persistence and patience, this event became a reality with the support of runners who believe that it is worth doing in memory of our dead heroes and living survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March.

Honesty

For the past editions of the BDM 102, I always emphasized the “honor system” in a running event. I told to my audience about my personal observations on the actuations of some of the runners and the reports I received from my marshals and staff with regards to honesty in running this event. My past journals/posts about the 1st BDM 102 would explain more about such incidents of breach of honesty during the event.

The 102K distance is daunting and running under the heat of the sun is very challenging. Such distance and challenge would tempt every runner to be honest or not, just to be able to finish the race within the prescribed cut-off time of 18 hours. Finishing an ultramarathon distance is a “mind game” and each of the runner must be able to prepare and train physically and mentally.

We made some adjustments on our protocol in order to monitor our runners along the route but these are not enough to make sure that runners with bad intentions would be detected by our staff/marshals. It is in this view that our outfit would be able to encourage and prepare all interested runners to run along the actual route through “test runs” before the scheduled race day.

After a brief open forum, the lecture was terminated after one hour.

The next BDM 102 Lecture will be held on October 22, 2010 at the same time and place. One of the top runners in this year’s BDM 102 will be invited as the resource speaker and another resource speaker will be discussing on her experience and “tips” as a Support Crew to her runner-husband.

To all BDM 102 runners, train well and keep strong!

Two weeks before this story was published at the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s (PDI) Sunday Inqu

Two weeks before this story was published at the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s (PDI) Sunday Inquirer Magazine, I received an SMS from Eric Caruncho introducing himself as a writer for PDI asking me for an interview in relation with his assigned job to come up with a story on extreme sports. He specifically mentioned about the Bataan Death March 102K Ultramarathon Race.

I told him that I don’t want “e-mail interviews” as I prefer to have a “face-to-face” interview with him and other journalists. I could be the conservative type on matters like this but I know that this is the proper way for a writer to actually feel and get a full knowledge about the topic from his source. I would like again to experience those “eye-to-eye” contact while talking to a journalist as I have experienced when I was still in the active military service.

I asked Mr Eric Caruncho to send me “guide questions” through e-mail so that I could prepare for our meeting/interview. I was glad he sent me a list of questions immediately and we set for a meeting a few days after.

So, the meeting was set and Eric arrived ahead of schedule but I was there already at our meeting place before he arrived. I was happy to see him carrying a tape recorder, writing pad, and a ball pen. Great! I have the impression that I am dealing with a real and professional journalist. Over a cup of coffee and a simple Filipino breakfast in one of the Military Golf Courses in Manila, the following story was the result of our meeting-interview.

Thanks, Eric for the nice story! I hope you will regain your love for running with his story.

Filed Under:

THERE are marathons. There are ultra-marathons. And then, there’s the Bataan Death March.

Quickly gaining a reputation as the toughest race in the Philippines, the aptly-named Bataan Death March (BDM) is an annual 102-kilometer slog that retraces the route of the infamous World War II debacle from Ground Zero in Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga.

Now on its third year, BDM promises to be an even greater challenge for “the few, the proud, the brave” next year. The race organizers plan to extend it to 151 kilometers, retracing the final journey of the original survivors of the death march to the Japanese concentration camp in Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.

If you have to ask “why,” you’re obviously not ready. But if your question is “why not,” then perhaps you have the makings of an ultra-runner, for whom the full marathon distance of 42 kilometers is just the starting point.

The Bataan Death March is the brainchild of retired Major General Jovenal D. Narcise, better known to the local running community as the Bald Runner through his blog “Bald Runner” (www.baldrunner.com).

“We wanted a nice gesture to remember our Filipino heroes,” says Narcise, who at 58 has a blood pressure of 110/70, a resting pulse rate of 50 to 60 beats per minute, and the same 29-inch waistline he had when he was a cadet at the Philippine Military Academy – all thanks to his high-mileage, clean living lifestyle.

“In the States, they have been holding the Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon in White Sands, New Mexico for the past 20 years, to honor veterans from the state. It has become internationally popular, and they have a ‘heavy’ category where runners run with a 35-pound backpack.”

Back home, local runners had been competing in the Araw ng Kagitingan ultramarathon relay on the anniversary of the Fall of Bataan.

“With the advent of ultramarathons worldwide, I thought, why not an ultramarathon?” says Narcise. “To make it more competitive, I thought of making it a 100-kilometer run.”

Under the International Association of Ultra Runners, the federation that regulates ultramarathon events, the standard ultramarathon distances are 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers and 100 miles. Narcise had had a bit of experience organizing races as an army commander, when he was in charge of the AFP’s Gintong Pangarap marathon. With his own funds (taken out of his retirement benefits), Narcise organized the first Bataan Death March in 2009.

“The standard cut-off time for a 100-kilometer race is 15 hours,” he says. “We decided to make it 18 hours for the BDM.”

To avoid the hottest part of the day, the race started before midnight. Out of 85 runners, 82 managed to make it to the finish line, with the fastest runner finishing in a little over 9 hours.

The second BDM held last April had even more participants, with 120 finishers, including 13 international competitors from the US, Singapore, Japan and France – all of whom heard about the BDM and signed up for it through Narcise’s blog. Despite the absence of any corporate sponsorship, the BDM is shaping up to be one of the premier annual events on local runners’ calendars.

Narcise isn’t just dreaming, however. He has organized local endurance athletes into the Philippine Association of Ultra Runners (PAU), which is federated with the International Association of Ultra Runners based in Morocco, a group that includes 40 member countries. Under its auspices, he has organized monthly ultramarathon events. He even sponsors his own Team Bald Runner, a core group of 15 elite athletes.

“My cause is just to promote the sport and raise funds for my athletes in Team Bald Runner,” he says. “I have 15 elite athletes I’ve been training for events. I support their registration fees, some subsistence, some out of town trips. They have been consistent in the top 3, top 5 in road races here. I brought two of them to South Korea last month for a 100-kilometer race. One of them placed sixth in the Jeju International 100K Run, setting a national record of 9 hours and six minutes. This is a good start.”

Through his blog, Narcise has become a pied piper of sorts for local endurance athletes and enthusiasts alike, providing training advice, anecdotes from his own experiences, commentary on local races, and miscellaneous information on diet, nutrition and training.

Originally from Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Narcise’s own running path started in 1968, when he was a pre-med student in Baguio dreaming of entering the Philippine Military Academy.

“The university doctor examined me and found that I had weak lungs and a heart murmur,” he recalls. “He advised me to start running. My original motivation was to pass the physical exam so I could enter the PMA.”

The running seemed to help his constitution, and he continued to run as a cadet.

“In the PMA, I had no talent for sports, just running,” he says. “I placed in the top 20 in a 20- kilometer race, out of 80 cadets.”

His running was interrupted, however, when he was assigned to Mindanao as a fledgling army officer, right in the middle of the MNLF rebellion in the mid-1970s. By the time he returned to Manila three years later, the first running boom was in full swing.

“I was running only 30 minutes a day when I entered a race from Camp Allen in Baguio to Fort Del Pilar in 1980,” he recalls. “I placed in the mid-pack but my brother, a sprinter, placed in the top 6. I asked him how he trained and he said he ran from his house in Diliman to Fort Bonifacio every day. I went and bought several back issues of ‘Runner’s World’ magazine, and that’s how I learned about scientific training for long distance running.”

He paid particular attention to the work of Arthur Lydiard, the legendary New Zealand coach who basically wrote the book on training for long distance running.

The following year, he placed second in the same race. “I began to appreciate the scientific approach to training – you have to develop endurance first, then speed.”

His career path took him through various commands in the military, but physical training became a constant in his life.

“When I became an army commander, I decided to set the example. Soldiers drink, smoke and indulge in other vices, but once you introduce running to them, they become disciplined. But for them to do that, you have to set the example. Clean living was the reputation I had among the soldiers.”

Narcise ran his first full marathon in 1980, and from then, there was no looking back. He continued to run local and some international marathons until his retirement three years ago, when he discovered the wonderful world of blogging. He started Bald Runner in 2007 as a way to share information and experiences about training. It has since become one of the more popular sites for local runners, especially on ultra distance events.

“In an ultramarathon, you are trying to find your limits physically, mentally and psychologically,” he says.

Obviously, a 100-kilometer run isn’t for everybody, but for those who are willing to put in the necessary training mileage, ultramarathons can often be easier than the marathon.

“In a marathon, you’re trying to finish the race within a set time,” he says. “In an ultramarathon, it’s different. You need somebody to talk to. You share food. You socialize. You develop camaraderie. The atmosphere is less competitive. You compete with yourself, the route and the elements, not against the other runners.”

In ultramarathons, it is also necessary to eat during the race to replenish the body’s nutrients, to hydrate, and to take walking breaks in between running. The Bataan Death March provides typical Filipino fare, including boiled bananas, boiled sweet potatoes, and a bowl of steaming mami or arroz caldo at the 50-kilometer mark, although many runners also bring carbohydrate gels, power bars and sports drinks.

All of these make ultramarathons less of a grim and determined death race and more of a shared bonding experience. Be that as it may, Narcise says prospective ultramarathoners should build up their weekly mileage to at least 50 kilometers a week, slowly building up to 80 to 100 kilometers a week as they near the event.

“I encourage my runners to have back to back long runs on weekends, ideally 15 to 20 kilometers on Saturday and a longer run of 30 kilometers on Sunday, or vice versa.”

“My vision for the sport is that maybe in eight years, the ultramarathon will be a regular Olympic event. By that time, maybe we can develop good ultramarathon runners. The Japanese are now the number one ultramarathon runners in the world. Why not Filipinos?”

That would be sweet revenge indeed for the original Bataan Death March. •

On my part as the Race Organizer and Race Director, BDM means the fulfillment of a dream to commemorate this event into an ultramarathon race in order to create awareness on the history of this event that brought the death of almost 25,000 soldiers and militia where most of the victims were our countrymen. Let this awareness on this infamous event in the history of warfare and mankind be carried down from one generation to generation so that wars amongst nations will never happen again.

The BDM 102 in the eyes of the Race Director also means appreciation to the determination of some of the runners who braved to reach the Finish Line even if they knew that they could not make it before the cut-off time of 18 hours. I have to be generous to these runners who overcame the heat, dust, pollution, pains, and the challenge in order to finish the 102K distance.

So, during the Get Together and Awarding Ceremony for the 2010 BDM 102 last March 11, 2010, as a surprise to everybody, I presented “special awards” for these runners who were determined to finish the race with their remaining strength and will power. Each of these runners were awarded with the BDM Individual Trophy, Finisher’s Medal (without any ranking), and a Finisher’s T-Shirt. Their names were not included in the Official List of Finishers.

The following runners were able to finish the 102K distance in less than 20 hours. They persisted and they were rewarded well.

1. Jerome Cartailler

2. Ariel Cortez

3. Eugene Porlucas

4. Benedict Meneses

5. Ivy Macainan

6. Kevin Viola

7. Major General Samuel Narcise AFP

8. Jonathan Gener

See you again in the 2011 BDM 102/151!!!

I presented this report during the “Get Together & Awarding Ceremony” of the 2010 BD

I presented this report during the “Get Together & Awarding Ceremony” of the 2010 BDM 102K Ultramarathon Race last March 11, 2010 at the Tejeros Hall, AFP Officers Club in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. This post then is for the benefit of my readers who were not part of the 2010 BDM 102 and who in the future would like to experience this ultrarunning event.

Top 10 List: What Is Unique About The BDM 102?

10. It commemorates the infamous Bataan Death March of World War II along the exact route where history happened. This is in honor of the 20,000 to 25,000 soldiers who died during the said March.

9. At present, the BDM 102 is the Longest Solo Road Race in the country.

8. Every Finisher within the cut-off time of 18 hours is awarded with a medal & individual trophy.

7. A Test of One’s Endurance Limit.

6. A Test of Teamwork between the runner & his/her support crew.

5. A Race where every runner helps each other to finish the course.

4. A Running Event where you can have a “fashion show” of your running apparel.

3. A venue where a runner can raise funds for his selected Charitable Institution.

2. A Running Event where a runner can take a shower & massage along the route.

1. The ONLY Road Race with an Awarding Ceremony & Get Together Party days after the event!!!

On Comparison of the 1st BDM 102 with the 2nd BDM 102:

1st BDM 102:

1. The result that I published was UNOFFICIAL due to the following reasons: (a) there were “cheaters” and I personally observed cheating among the runner-participants; (b) the Actual Route was not followed as the leading runners did not pass “critical” kilometer posts along the way.

2. I was the Race Organizer and Race Director and also one of the Runner-Participants.

3. There were Aid Stations in every 20 kilometers plus a Breakfast Station at Km Post #50.

4. There were four (4) Checkpoints where I placed “secret marshals” who handed color-coded wrist bands.

5. There were Cash Prizes to the Overall Top 3 Male & Female Categories and Trophies to Top 3 in the Age Category for both Men & Women Categories.

6. There were seven (7) Foreign Runners but only five (5) finished. There were five (5 lady runners but only two (2) of them finished.

2nd BDM 102:

1. The result that I published a day after the event was OFFICIAL.

2. The prestige and integrity of the race were maintained as there were no reports of cheating among the runners.

3. The actual route of the BDM was followed.

4. I was the full-time Race Director of the event.

5. I removed all the Aid Stations, instead, each runner must have his/her Support Vehicle & Support Crew in order to compete in this event. The halfway Aid Station at Km Post #50 was maintained and it offered breakfast, foods & drinks to all the runners.

6. Submission of a Medical/Doctor’s Certificate for each runner is a MUST.

7. I have placed seven (7) Time Stations & Checkpoints that gave colored string necklace to every runner.

8. Final Briefing & CarboLoading Party were conducted two days before the Race Day. Administrative matters were done during this event.

9. No Cash Prizes. Awards/Trophies were given to the Top 3 Men’s & Ladies’ Categories.

10. There were eleven (11) Foreign Runners and all of them finished. There were thirteen (13) Lady Runners but only ten (10) finished.

2010 BDM 102 Winners

Men’s Category

Champion: Alvin Canada—10:01:5 hours

1st Runner-Up: Randy Bumahit—10:44:27 hours

2nd Runner-Up: Jonnifer Lacanlale—11:01:47 hours

Women’s Category

Champion: Whreachelle Cordova—16:00:07 hours

1st Runner-Up: Raiza Tulan—16:23:01 hours

2nd Runner-Up: Maria Myrna Emelyne Buenafe—16:38:48 hours

Observations:

1. The Last Day of Registration and Payment of Fees for Invited/Qualified Runners were scheduled six (6) weeks before Race Day.

2. The responsibility of logistics/support was given to the individual runner.

3. Some of the runners are still fond of last day submission of race requirements.

4. Administrative matters were done during the Final Briefing & CarboLoading Party which resulted to a shorter processing at the Starting/Assembly Area during Race Day.

5. For this year, the Race started earlier (11:30 PM of Saturday) and it was finished earlier, too!

6. Published Rules & Regulations were followed but some minor violations were observed.

7. Our Time Stations/Checkpoints were effective to pinpoint/deter cheaters. We deployed more checkpoints this time.

8. Support Vehicles were more responsive to the needs of the runners than placing stationary Aid Stations.

9. There was a tie in 4th Place. This thing will never happen again or else both runners will be disqualified for pacing with each other.

10. There were some runners who registered to have Support Vehicle but in reality, they were not supported by such vehicle. A stricter measure will be implemented in the next edition in order to monitor runners without any support vehicle.

11. Some runners lack “heat training” and the necessary training to finish an ultramarathon distance race. They understimated their supply of water & drinks needed for the road race.

12. There were cases of “bandit” runners. I had to warn Norio Tanaka from Runnex, a finisher in the 1st BDM 102, to stop running during the race as he was a “bandit” in the race. Another unidentified runner was also warned to stop “brisk walking” at Km Post #14. Guys, if you want to “bandit” in my race, please don’t do it! If you want to experience running the BDM route, please don’t do it during my race day. You have the remaining days of the year to do it by yourself.

13. Some runners have two or more vehicles tagging along with their authorized support vehicle. I know that this race is a family affair among the participants but please limit the vehicles tagging along with the support vehicles.

14. We did not commit a mistake in our Finisher’s Medal. What you see in your Finisher’s Medal is the Official Seal of BDM 102 with the year 2009 as its founding year. I requested the finishers to have the date of the 2010 Bdm 102 engraved at the back. In next year’s edition, we will correct and place the engraved date at the back of the medal.

2010 BDM 102 Trivia:

1st Husband & Wife Finishers—Ria Go Tian & Emerson Go Tian

1st US/American Finisher—Charles Fletcher

1st Grandson-Finisher of a BDM 1942 Survivor—Jose Maria Galauran

Youngest Finisher—Mark Peralta, 19 years old

Oldest Finisher—Artemio Ladia, 54 years old.

1st Active General of the AFP To Finish The Race—Major General Samuel D Narcise AFP

1st Active PNP Officer Finisher—P/Supt Gregorio Torres

1st Father & Son Finishers—Major General Samuel D Narcise & Lemuel Narcise

Assessment:

1. 2010 BDM 102 was a successful event. Although we did not earn any profit or proceeds from this year’s edition, the support of the “Friends of the Bald Runner & Team BR-Professionals” covered the expenses/support for the additional logistics and activities to make this event a successful one. The BDM 102K Ultramarathon Race will remain to be a simple race devoid of unnecessary “distractions” and funfare.

2. Planning and Execution were almost perfect this time due to the experience from the 1st BDM 102. Our staff, volunteers, and marshals were fully briefed, rehearsed, focused and coordinated for the event.

3. The weather conditions were extreme but runners were able to adapt to the situation.

4. Teamwork & Unity were displayed among competing runners and support crew were responsive to the needs of the runners.

5. Lastly, this event would not be successful without the support & cooperation of the runners/support crew; sponsors & supporters; volunteers; and the Elite Team Bald Runner & Staff. Thank you very much!!!

after gaining a little bit of weight after my first marathon . tapering is a little bit of overrated, or Im just using it as a justification for my laziness. Anyway, Im running long distances again, am seeing 2 more marathons this year ( CAMSUR and SUBIC/QCIM ) and Cebu Marathon for the first month of 2011.
At the end of this year, I will knock on the doors of BDM 102 to be able to join the most historical run of the whole Philippine Islands.

The not so amazing Amazing Kidney Race. With a 5:45 gunstart, I had to wake at 4am to have enough time to prep up and get to UP. Met Mesh at 4:50 and we’re off to QCland. When we got to UP, I called International Bandits L&M because I had their bibs.

Bibbed and GUed I was ready to race. Let’s go!

Wait!

Waiting…

Wait pa rin. We had plenty of time to catch up with friends and talk about the HK marathon but really I didnt wake up 4am to chat with friends.

The 5:45 gunstart was delayed to 6:30. By the time we got to the starting line, the 15K runners were eager to get started and avoid the harsh sun.

Let’s go!

Ahhh dearest HostBoy and HostGirl decided to start the program. Too early for me to appreciate witty repartee. And then, DocMama was called to do a welcome speech. It’s her first fun run and I’m really happy for her but I wanted to race! Now!

tagal ng gunstart. picture muna! thanks Jan!

After she thanked all of kidneyland and all their kins and stones … we’re off!

I had a goal for the race, do the first lap in under 45min and just bounce along the second lap. I think, I know, I started too fast and had to adjust my pace at Km3 Of course, as I settled to a 5:55min/km pace a white dog overtook me. I tried to chase it but when I hit 5 and it was still pulling away, I decided to go back on pace.

The race route took us out first towards Commonwealth Ave and back again to the Acad Oval. Relatively flat. I was getting ready for the promised Heartbreak Hill but the route led us out towards Katipunan. Change route but it was rolling so I think it was equally challenging.

I faded a bit on the way back and my last 2kms were over 6mins. Good thing I banked a few seconds in the first 3kms.

I finished the 1st loop in 44:sumthing. Target, Hit! I slowed down and just bounced along.

It was a podium day for T2. Mesh came in 3rd Overall female and Dingdong was 2nd in the Doc Category. Yipee!!!

Winners!!!! Congrats Dingdong, Mesh and Tiffin!

BDM. After a quick costume change, Ray, Mesh and I raced to Pampanga. We had friends to cheer on and heckle a bit.

I am pretty familiar with San Fernando but when we tried to find the BDM markers, I realised that I only know how to get to our favorite eating places. Haha.

Ray eventually found the right way and we started seeing km markers. The first runner we saw was Arman Fernando. It was 11am and he was less than 10km to the finish. The question then was did he smoke Jonel? We saw more runners and cheered for them too. We finally spotted Jonel. He was walking but with just 12kms to go he was on track for a PR. Cheers were exchanged for our FrontRunner boss. (Sabi nga pala ni Arman, 4-0 na daw sa Ultra!) We weren’t surprised to see Jay next. We weren’t also surprised to see him munching on a burger.

We continued our reverse sweep in search of Ria and Emer. We found them at Km76. Running. Walking. Smiling. Ria was swearing that she will never do this again. Really?

You gotta read their stories.

After seeing that Ria and Emer were still on track and had a game plan in place we headed to the finish line. On our way back, we continued to cheer for runners and friends. It was a bit hard to call out names because most of them had their faces covered to protect themselves from the harsh sun.

It was march to the finish for some but whenever we see warriors still running our hearts would skip a beat and we would cheer louder.

Most of the finishers we saw were a bit teary eyed when they crossed the finish line. Awwww.

We had lunch and returned to the finish line when we found out that Ria and Emer were at Km97. 5Kms to go. They will finish. They have to finish.

At the finish line, as the cut off drew near, Mesh and I were still cheering, but we were keeping an eye out for Ria and Emer. Finally, we gave up and walked to the main road and a bit. We kept on computing their pace and we knew that they would be near.

Pretty soon we saw Ria! Woohoo!!!

Congratulations Ria!

But where is Emer?

We had to help out a bit at the finish line so we couldn’t wait for him at the corner.

And then with a few minutes before the 18hour cut off, I saw a runner sprinting to the finish line. He was running really fast. He crossed the finish line. It’s Emer! Woohoo! He kept on running. Oist, tapos na race. Ray and I went to him to congratulate him and to tell him to stop running.

Ria finished in 17:37 and Emer in 17:55.

Happy Ending!

To all the runners and support crew, kahanga-hanga kayo!

To BR and his team, Congratulations!

At 11:00 PM last Saturday, March 6 2010 the KM00 of the Bataan Death March was filled with runners and alike. It marks the start of the BDM race which was the brain child of Sir Jovie Narcise aka “The BaldRunner“. Almost all were excited, most especially the runners, for they would be conquering a total distance of 102K in 18hours.

It took me a long time to write about the BDM race, it’s because I’m still in awe of the courage I saw when a lot of runners joined this race. Sure, I was not in their shoes literally but I had witnessed their hardship of running the full course. I even saw the camaraderie in runners and support, some support crew would even offer their help to runners whom they are not supporting. A total of 142 registrants joined the race, some of them joined the 1st BDM race last year and a lot were newbies. But veterans or newbies they have set the same goal and that is to FINISH the race no matter, within the specified cut-off time.

Erick with fellow BDM runners Sir Totoy, Abby, Chris, Wilnar and Dhenz

The Brave warriors of BDM

Since most of the participants were already at KM00, Sir Jovie decided to start the race earlier than announced, Bro. Ronnie aka RunnerforChrist led the prayer. Both the American and Philippine National Anthem was sung, the Stars Spangled Banner was led by Sir Jovie. He instructed all the support crew to head to KM07, since the road leading to it, is narrow and steep, in order to avoid traffic at this route and just let the runners occupy the road, and that is what we did.

KM07

We waited for Erick here first, he said that he would just be walking from KM00 up to this point considering that it’s mostly uphill. And he also strategized on how he would be conserving his energy to finish the feat. And so we did wait, two men from the Army arrived first at this point followed by other runners who were really psyched up for this race. I think it was after 40minutes when Erick arrived at KM07, I together with Ryan (Erick’s brother) assisted him, replenishing his 2 Nathan bottle with water and Gatorade. He would be running with Vener aka Run Unlimited, which I agreed, running with a buddy makes it all different. Erick would be telling on what station we would be waiting for him, so that he can get supplies if he needed to. Next stop would be KM10.

Erick and Vener on their way to KM10

KM10

Both of them were taking it easy, they wouldn’t want to rush and end up with an injury. They would be running 92 more kilometers, Erick asked for boiled egg and salt this time, I think he got hungry. He would be instructing us on what KM point we would be waiting for him, whether it would be after 5 kilometers or more. So that when he arrived there, we would be ready on what we will give to him. The key to a successful team work is communication, and even days before the race, I have made myself ready that Erick might get angry and grumpy. I have told him that since it was his moment, so I won’t mind if he gets mad or shout at us, but since we communicated well, we have avoided this scenario which I was thankful for.

KM15, 20, 25, 30

Stations that we waited for Erick, I forgot what we did and what time they arrived at this point, so please forgive me. I’m still in the process of urging my ultra husband Erick to write his story on the BDM, I do hope that he would, it’s a different story from what I ‘am sharing, this post is from a support crew’s point of view, I hope to post one from the runner’s view.

Pose with my (ultra)man =)

The rules of the BDM stated that runners would be running on the left side of the road which is considered as the safe side for runners and we the support crew would be waiting for them at the right side. But Sir Jovie allowed the runners to run on the right side so that they would approach their support easily. Erick and I have already talked on what to give him at certain point station. We would be convoying with Vener’s support crew headed by his wife Christy, which I had the pleasure of having her company.

KM35

My eyes were beginning to shut at this point and I can see Mr. Sandman, I felt so sleepy. I was looking for a carinderia open to have some coffee, I think it was already past 4 in the morning. I was thankful that we saw one, we bought pandesal, and I was alive again. Coffee is my steroids, my day is not complete without one and I cannot write without one cup or two.

We offered pandesal to runners approaching us, Erick borrowed my watch and I have no way of checking what time it was when he got here.

At KM35 with Vener

Next stop would be KM40, it is at this station when Wilnar Iglesia and Chris Iblan of Takbo.ph approached our support vehicle asking for anything that is hot. For the past kilometers these two young men have been in front of the pack, they are both strong runners, finishing some run in the lead. The look on Chris was alarming, he really looked like that he is not well, this got us worried. We offered him banana and boiled egg hoping that he would be better soon, as in soon, since the race is still 62 kilometers away. While Christy and I are chatting, we learned that he had water intoxication, I googled it and learned that:

“Marathon runners are susceptible to water intoxication if they drink too much while running. This is caused when sodium levels drop below 135 mmol/L when athletes consume large amounts of fluid. This has been noted to be the result of the encouragement of excessive fluid replacement by various guidelines. This has largely been identified in marathon runners as a dilutional hyponatremia. Medical personnel at marathon events are trained to suspect water intoxication immediately when runners collapse or show signs of confusion.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication)

Let us stay safe and make it a point to listen to our body.

On the other hand, both Erick and Vener were still in good shape, Erick once again asked for hammer gel, boiled egg and salt, when I told him about Chris condition he too got worried.

KM50

BDM’s aid station is located here at KM50, lugaw, boiled eggs, boiled bananas, crackers would be served to runners at this pit stop. It was past 7 in the morning when Erick, Vener and Cesar Abarientos reached this station.

Nearing the KM50 post

Look at the smile of their face

Lugaw is one of Erick’s fancy food during and after a run. As what was promised, foods were available at the KM50 which every runner took advantage of.

Photo op with Coach Salazar while enjoying their lugaw

Pose at KM50

Antok na ako =)

Erick changed his clothes here, so that he would be comfortable running since the sun is almost up.

Since most of the bloggers are having their post in parts, I would be doing the same. Will post stories from KM50 onwards.

Lugaw is one of Erick’s fancy food during and after a run. As what was promised, foods were available at the KM50 which every runner took advantage of.

Photo op with Coach Salazar while enjoying their lugaw

Erick changed his clothes here, so that he would be comfortable running since the sun is almost up.

Since most of the bloggers are having their post in parts, I would be doing the same. Will post stories from KM50 onwards.

March 6-7, 2010 – Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga For my 1st BDM 102km ultramarath

March 6-7, 2010 – Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga

For my 1st BDM 102km ultramarathon, I was able to arrive at BDM km#102 marker in San Fernando, Pampanga within 12 to 16 hours target I set prior to the race. My official time : 13:20:44 hours, at an average pace of 7:51 mins/km. Finished the race at 9th place ; or 10th place overall as there were two 4th placers. Run-walk, hydration, and cool-down strategies worked, along with reliable support, my brother Jesus. I also want to share that I survived with this race without any injuries (well, I got blisters), which is to me; should always be part of the goal especially with this kind of long battle. Below is the time splits based on my chrono-watch and garmin. Crossed 50km mark in almost 6 hours, and next 52km in 7:24 hours.

distance-time splits

The splits above clearly indicated that I began to slow down between km# 60 to km#70, when the sun started to rise, and got a bit stronger the last 12km. For the last 10km at least, im pretty sure my pace was faster because of the runner/s in front and behind me as we were really close to one another (less than 1km range). I really tried to catch-up with the guy in front of me and made sure the runner behind me dont get too close. I don’t know but my competitive spirit got triggered again making my last 10kms so stressful. Anyway, I eventually crossed the finish line 2 minutes behind the guy in front.. and landed 10th place overall. I guess the “the induced stress” kinda paid-off

6 hours from now, 142 brave souls will race their way from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga as a tribute to our fallen heroes during the “Bataan Death March” in World War 2, from April 10 to 11, 1942.

By 12 midnight, as soon as I start running away from BDM km marker “zero” in Mariveles, Bataan, one of the toughest decision I made 5 months back will become a reality… running 102km.. doing ultramarathon… running BDM102… It doesnt really matter whether I finish the race or DNF’ed, I just know that when I decided to join this event, Im already a winner. This decison made me a better person in a lot of ways. Also, “training” for this event made me realized what my body is capable of doing… and how far I can go in terms of running …

For this race, Im hoping that I will be able to finish the race in 12 to 16 hours, the range is quite long (4hrs) as there are a lot of “unknowns” to me after 60km. But of course, since this is a race, I will try to cross the finish line as as soon as I can, with no injuries…

To all BDM102 2nd Edition warriors… All the best !!! Please be safe on the road…. and see you ALL at the starting line… and at the finish line… God Bless to All of Us…

An addition & improvement from last year’s edition of BDM 102 was conducted at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. A Carbo Loading Party and Final Briefing was held to meet the runners and support crews of the 2010 BDM 102. This activity was intended to distribute the race packet (race bib, instructions, & banner/tarpaulin) to the runners in order to lessen the administrative activities before the start of the race at Km 00 in Mariveles, Bataan. This activity started at 5:55PM, 5 minutes earlier than the scheduled time of 6:00PM.

The event was held at The Patio, AFP Officers Clubhouse in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. It started with an invocation from Ronnie De Lara aka RunnerFor Christ; Singing of the National Anthem; Carbo Loading Activity; and the presentation of the Final Briefing. There were some adjustments made on the Rules & Regulations and Critical Points along the route were explained and presented. However, these points along the route will be manned by Race Marshals.

It was not an All Pasta Carbo Loading Party as my brother, MajGen Samuel of the Light Armor Division of the Philippine Army who is also one of the runners, together with his son, Lemuel, donated two (2) big lechon for the party. I just hope all the participants were able to eat their share of the foods served last night.

All of the runners were excited to meet other participants of the race. Foreign runners mingled with the local runners and the “first-timers” for this race were all attentive to the briefing. I can see “strong determination” and “positive attitude” on the faces of the participants. I hope all the starters will be able to finish the race within the cut-off time of 18 hours considering the arrival of early summer in the country. I wish all the runners will have the best condition for them on the day of the race.

For those who were late in coming to the party, please don’t be late during the start of the race and during our Awarding & Get Together Party, few days after the race. As a reminder, the assembly time at the BDM Shrine at Km 00 in Mariveles, Bataan is 10:00 PM of March 6, Saturday. And for those who have not yet received their race packet, they have to be in the assembly area earlier than the scheduled assembly time. As I have announced, the race will start early as soon as we can account for everybody to be present at the starting area.

For those who were not able to get their banner/tarpaulin last night, we will give you whatever is available. It will be given on a “first come, first serve” basis. My staff will be at the Assembly Area at 9:00 PM of March 6, Saturday.

Good luck and have a safe trip to Bataan! See you at the Starting Line!

2 test runs have been conducted so far in preparation for the 2nd edition of BDM102, the 5okm test run in bataan last Jan23, and the midnight run in UP QC last saturday. Joining these runs, along with the other participants of BDM102, gave me a preview on how its gonna be, more or less, during the actual run in March as it exposed me to 2 specific scenarios that simulates part of the actual run; 1) running 1st 50km of the actual route and 2) running from 12 midnight to 6am which represents the actual 1st 6 hour of the race. Being able to do these simulation runs (or the experience itself) provided me a good perspective as I do my preparation in terms of strategies. Lets see…. if I can convert those learnings and observations into a solid plan during d-day….

Below are the “Distance-Time Splits” table and pictures during the test runs.

1. On D-Day, all the Support Vehicles will proceed at vicinity Km Post #7 to wait for their respective runners once they drop off at the Starting Area at Km Post #00.

2. All runners should maintain a single file along the route of the race. This rule was violated on the first 7 kilometers of the route.

3. Runners are not allowed to approach their support vehicle, except when they want to rest. Their support crew should be able to hand in their needs while they are on the left side of the road. Proper coordination between the runner and his/her support crew spells a lot of difference in an ultra race like the BDM.

4. It is no longer allowed to leave the route to eat and buy drinks in convenience stores and fastfood restaurants during the race. Advise your support crew to buy the needed food or items and let him/her give you along the way. Better yet, plan ahead for your hydration and food intake and have these items stocked in your support vehicle. However, in case of emergency, like going to the restroom, this will be an exemption.

5. The race on D-Day will start at exactly 12:00 Midnight of Saturday, March 6, 2010.

6. Each runner shall be responsible to provide its own first aid kit, headlight, flashlight, reflectorized vest, and extra batteries during the race. The use of reflectorized vest and flashlight/headlight is highly recommended on the first 5 hours of the race as it will be dark along the way.

7. Train your bowel movement for the early part of the race as most of the gasoline service stations and restaurants will still be closed. We don’t have the luxury to deploy portalets along the route. Better yet, take some immodium/diatab tablets before the start of the race.

8. We intend to have an Aid Station at Kilometer Post #50 where we will serve hot arroz caldo, hot noodle soup and boiled sweet potato/banana/eggs exclusively for the runners. The halfway mark will serve also as the only “drop bag” area along the route.

9. We don’t intend to impose any proper attire for the race. Runner can use his/her prefered apparel for the race. The Race Organizer will not be giving race shirt or singlet for the event. Make sure that the race bib will be displayed visible on the front of the runner’s shirt or shorts. Runner will not be penalized for running without a shirt, provided that his race bib is pinned on the front part of his shorts.

10. It is suggested that runner can use light-colored or white shirt during the race as these colors don’t absorb so much heat from the sun. Provide yourself also with lots of sponge which can be soaked to cold water and used as sprinkler of cold water to your head and body. Better yet, get a bottle sprayer which you can fill with cold water and have your support crew use it to spray you with water while you are running. This is not a joke, from time to time, spray or pour cold water on your core & groin areas, too!

11. For further advise and tips in order to finish the BDM 102, please refer to my previous posts on my experience about this race. Browse also the blogs of Bugobugo85, run2dmoon, runnerforchrist, and other runner-bloggers.

12. Remember, your main objective in this race is to be able to finish within the 18-hour cut-off time and enjoy the experience.

Good luck and Have Fun!!!

1. Do not think or plan of cheating in my race because I will expose you and disqualify you in my future races.

2. Ultramarathoners or Ultrarunners are supposed to be veterans of road races and they should set a good example to the younger runners. Ultramarathoners are noble men and women.

3. The new Rules and Regulations of the BDM 102 are supposed to check or prevent runners from getting or thinking the idea to make “shortcuts” of the route or take advantage of riding in their support vehicles during the early part of the race under the cover of darkness. Beware, there will always be somebody who will see you! On D-Day, time stations and checkpoints to distribute ”bands” will be deployed along the route.

4. BDM 102 is the only road race in the country that awards “quality-made” medal and individual trophy to every finisher. Be sure that you deserve to receive these awards and prouder to show them to your family, relatives and friends.

5. BDM 102 is the most expensive road race in the country in terms of registration fees and support expenses for each runner. This is the only road race that provides a “Get Together Party” among the participants a few days after the race. Although the party is free, runners are encouraged to bring additional food and drinks to make the party more enjoyable and memorable.

6. My “running-friends” and “friends” from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are the cornestones of support/sponsorship in this ultrarunning event. We no longer beg or ask from our sports leaders, politicians, and corporate brands in order to support this particular road race. We will just wait for their contributions/support. This race will never be used in the name of Politics.

7. The “test run” is set for tomorrow morning. Assembly time is 6:00 AM at the BDM Shrine’s Km Post 00 in Mariveles, Bataan. The run will end at Km Post #50 in Abucay, Bataan. The “test run” starts at 6:30 AM. A simple briefing will be conducted prior to the start of the run.

8. The participants in the “test run” will observe the new rules and regulations for the 2nd BDM 102. I will allow those runners without support vehicle to join the “test run”. However, the use of support vehicle will be strictly implemented on D-Day.

9. Runners will see “red ribbons” tied on BDM Km Post markings where they will lead the runners to turn right on road crossings. Red paint spray will be used also on the asphalt/concrete road to show direction of the route.

10. Ambulance and additional drinking water will be available during the “test run”, courtesy of my brother Samie, to support all the runners.

11. When you think that you can not make it to the finish line, think positive. Always think of the integrity of the race.

Runners who are intending to run and participate in the 2nd BDM 102 on March 6-7 are highly encourag

Runners who are intending to run and participate in the 2nd BDM 102 on March 6-7 are highly encouraged to join the 2nd BDM 50K “test run”. For those who can not make it in this “test run” on 23 January 2010 (Saturday), it is their personal responsibility to conduct a “walk-through” or “test run” on their own before race day.

One of the glaring lessons learned during the conduct of the 1st BDM 102 was for the runners to know the exact route of the race especially on the first 50 kilometers of the race where everybody was running under darkness. Some of the leading runners were not able to accurately went through some roads that led to the other kilometer post markings of the Bataan Death March’s original route. And some did not mind going inside the towns of Limay and Orion and instead ran along the Roman National Highway, shaving off considerable distance from the race.

In order to be fair to everybody and accurately run through the exact route of the BDM, the “test run” will be conducted from Km #0 in Mariveles, Bataan up to Km #50 in Abucay, Bataan on January 23, 2010. The assembly time will be at 6:00 AM at the Bataan Death March Shrine in Mariveles, Bataan. The test run will immediately start at 6:30 AM.

It is in this “test run” that the new rules and regulations will be tested and applied and it is a must for the participants to bring their respective support vehicle and for them to run on the left side of the road, facing the incoming traffic. There will be no pacers and runners shall run on a single file on the edge of the road. If runners would be able to bring their support crew, it would be better.
Runners in this “test run” are not allowed to display banners and tarpaulins of their respective corporate sponsors. However, I will allow the runners to display the banners or tarpaulins of their respective running clubs or groups. The running groups with names of products are strictly not allowed.

Due to the unavailability of ambulance or medical personnel to assist in this run, the runners are advised to bring appropriate FIRST AID KITS in case of any injuries or emergencies during the run.

Km Post #7 & Vicinity

After the start of the run, the drivers of support vehicles are advised to immediately proceed to the vicinity of Kilometer Post #7 where there is an ample space where the vehicles would park and wait for their runners. Support vehicles will be advised NOT to “leapfrog” from Kilometer Post #1 to Kilometer Post #7 because of the lack of road shoulders most especially from Km Post #3 to Km Post #7. With this situation, the runners are also advised to bring their hydration belt with them on the first 7 kilometers of the route.

Km Post #14. Turn Right Towards Brgy Mountain View, Cabcaben

The first critical intersection or Y-road is at Kilometer Post #14 that goes inside Barangay Mountain View, Balantasan, Cabcaben, Bataan. All the runners should turn right on this road and be able to reach Km Post #16 as runners would go back to the main highway.

Km Post # 31. Road from Poblacion Limay, Bataan

The second intersection is at Kilometer Post #23 where the runners must turn right towards the Limay’s National Power Corporation and Limay’s Poblacion. Runners must be able to run again along the main highway after reaching Kilometer Post #31.

The third and last critical intersection is at Kilometer Post #32 where all the runners must turn right again towards the Municipality of Pilar. On this road, the runners would be able to reach Balanga and Abucay. The Finish Area is at the vicinity of Kilometer Post #50 near the Abucay Public Market.

All these critical instersections will be properly marked with yellow-colored ribbons.

Runners are also advised to be careful and completely stop and observe the incoming traffic on both sides of the road/highway before crossing the highway and towards these intersections along the route.

After running through this part of the route (Km #0 to Km #50), the runners would be able to memorize and be confident to run through these intersections even during darkness which will be the actual situation during the race.

From Km Post #50, while they are on their way back to Manila, they could travel along the rest of the route up to the Finish Line at Km Post #102 in San Fernando, Pampanga. The route inside the Poblacion of Guagua, Pampanga is recommended to be seen by the runners. ( A Pit Stop to taste Razon’s Halo-Halo in Guagua would be a nice treat to the runners’ tired leg muscles!!!)

The local runners who will join their first BDM 102 race are highly encouraged to join this “test run”, moreso, to those who will be running their first ultra distance.

A Race Bib will be issued to each runner before the start of the “test run” and it should be displayed visibly infront of their shirt or shorts. Although this is not a formal race, every runner will have a registered finish time for the “test run”.

See you at Km Post #0 on the early morning of January 23. Good luck to everybody.

(Note: Please leave a comment if you intend to join the “test run” so that we can prepare the number of Race Bibs)

1. Organization of More Running Clubs/Groups—Every runner is encouraged to join a running club

1. Organization of More Running Clubs/Groups—Every runner is encouraged to join a running club or group in order for him to be motivated to train and develop his/her full potentials in running and other related endurance sports.

2. More Corporate Sponsorship in Running Events and Training of Elite Athletes.

3. Declare a Week or Month as “National Sports Week” or “Sports Month”—If there are legislators or government executives who are involved in sports, they should legislate a law declaring a part of year as a period where we can hear or meet the people and institutions involved in sports. I know that most of us do not even know the difference between the PSC, POC, and the different national sports federations. It is in this period in the year when Expositions and other running-related activities are scheduled.

4. Winners in Corporate-Sponsored Marathon Races should be sent to International Marathon Races for “exposure”. It is a proven formula that our athletes are only known by our media and our national sports authorities/national leadership when they win in international competition. As winners in international marathon events, our athletes will inspire more of our populace, down to the “grassroots”, to be involved in running.

5. Develop more “volunteerism” during marathon events among the members of the running community—The volunteerism had been highly displayed by the group of Jinoe’s takbo.ph and Captain Amado’s Reinier Pacific during Marathon Races. Of course, Jonel aka Bugobugo85′s Team Hardcore; HINGS Running Club; Carrey-Isko-Eugene Group; and Tintin aka Timothy’s had been consistently the “volunteers” in my road races. I hope that more running clubs and runners will be involved in such acts of giving back their services & goods to the other runners.

6. Conduct of a Running Lecture/Forum/Symposium—How I wish one of the profitable corporate insitutions of the country sponsor the conduct of a Running Symposium where we could meet and hear the words of international runners like Dean Karnazes, Bart Yasso, Paul Tergat, Alberto Salazar, Grete Waitz, and other running Champions in the past. Or maybe, ask our past Project Gintong Alay athletes to share their stories to us. It would be nice to hear how Lydia De Vega trained for the Gold Medal in the past Asian Games.

7. A Wholesome Local Running Magazine—How I wish a Filipino Running Magazine ala Runners World or Running Times or Trail Runner or Trailrunning Magazine be available to the running community with a cheaper price than those published abroad. These pictures will confirm that this wish will become a reality in a matter of days:

Watchout, FR Is Coming!

A Wholesome Running Magazine By Hardcores

8. Oval Tracks at Makati University and International School (The Fort) be opened to the public.

9. BDM 102 will find its future Finish Line in 2011. It will be a 24-hour Road Race to this final destination. If you don’t reach this Finish Line in 24 hours, you will be considered as DNF. The following are the pictures of the future Finish Line.

Wide Finish Line Location

BDM Km Post #145

10. Finally, A Runners Library & Museum—A place where runners could share their running “collections” and a place where runners would meet and make their research. A place where we could see the Hall of Fame in Athletics!

You might wonder why ultra trail runners would run for one to two days to finish a 100-mile mountain

You might wonder why ultra trail runners would run for one to two days to finish a 100-mile mountain trail run within the prescribed cut-off time and receive a Finisher’s Belt Buckle at the Finish Line and the “bragging rights” to have finished such endurance running event. My ultratrail runner-friends Ben Gaetos, Rick Gaston, Eric Lumba, Carmela Layson and Jose San Gabriel would know the answer!

I am posting the following Finisher’s Belt Buckle as an “inspiration” to finish one of these popular 100-Mile Mountain Trail Runs.

If there is somebody among my readers who knows a company/business outfit in the country who can make or produce these “big” belt buckles, please leave a comment.

It is my plan and vision to extend the BDM 102 into a 100-Mile run from Mariveles, Bataan (Km 00) up to Camp O’Donnell, Capas, Tarlac and a Finisher’s Buckle will be awarded in addition to the Finisher’s Individual Trophy and Medal. Not for the next edition (next year) but it could be in its future editions.

Runners will have the option to finish BDM 102 or go all the way to BDM 160.

Never Stop Testing Your Limits!
