A banda americana The Beach Boys toca no Credicard Hall, dia 2 de dezembro às 22 horas, em São Paulo.

Aqui fica a minha homenagem a essa banda que ficou ofuscada pelos Beatles e os Rolling Stones e entrou em depressão.

Estão ai fazendo shows a 40 anos, sem férias, a banda que mais fez shows no mundo do rock.

Posto abaixo a resenha e a capa do filme que conta a história dessa banda. Recomendo esse filme para todos que se interessam pelo rock and roll e a surf music.

SUMMER DREAMS: THE STORY OF THE BEACH BOYS

No apice de sua meteorica carreira, os Beach Boys começaram a enfrentar todo tipo de problemas. A começar pela critica que rotulou sua musica de modismo.

As relações pessoais se deterioraram: brigas, ciumes e desconfiança, num mundo de sexo, drogas e rock and roll acabaram aos poucos transformando o caminho dessa banda em um mar de excessos.

Porém, por todo o caminho eles continuaram a tocar. Os Beach Boys são o proprio retrato do que aconteceu de melhor e de pior em sua geração.

A história do filme é sobre alguns dos mais talentosos musicos, numa época de revolução moral, cultural e musical, presos em tempo de turbulencia, numa viagem pelas estradas da inocência e da loucura.

Há tempos não me animo tanto com um show como o de quarta próxima, dia 2. The Beach Boys. O show acontece no Credicard Hall.

The Beach Boys é uma banda criada em 1961 na Califórnia, Estados Unidos. Brian Wilson, seus dois irmãos, o primo e um amigo se tornariam a banda número 1 do país.

A década de sessenta foi marcada pelos movimentos anti-guerra, feminismo e pelo surgimento dos hippies. Eu não estava lá. Na verdade, eu não estava nem nos planos dos meus pais, que na época, ainda nem sequer namoravam. Mas por algum motivo eu simplesmente adoro esta banda.

Com um rock leve e de letras que caracterizavam o estilo californiano de viver, as músicas da banda têm uma força imensa. É inevitável se imaginar em um conversível com amigos cruzando a avenida da praia de ponta a ponta em um ensolarado dia de verão ao ouvir as músicas. Uma onda de alegria, descontração, leveza de espírito… um ar de férias e bons momentos.

Não fui contemporâneo, mas com certeza tive a oportunidade de vivenciar o espírito Beach Boys e, hoje, tenho na memória momentos maravilhosos com as músicas da banda como trilha sonora.

A música boa é isso. É extremamente relativa. Ela é boa para mim porque me remete a algum momento, porque marcou, porque me passa alguma sensação, por que extrapola o limite de apenas ouvir. Os Beach Boys me fazem querer ter vivido na Califórnia dos anos 60; me fazem querer que aquelas letras virem minha história.

É uma banda que não me faz apenas querer ouvi-la, mas me faz querer vivê-la.

Grande elenco e roteiro agitado são os pontos fortes do filme de Scorsese

“Um bom filme começa pelo seu elenco”. Se Levarmos em conta essa frase, Os Infiltrados pode ser considerado um excelente filme só pelo seu time de atores: Jack Nicholson, Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon e a frieza de Mark Wahlberg fazem desse filme uma sangrenta obra de arte do Século XXI. Tudo isso somado à genialidade do diretor Martin Scorsese, o ex- injustiçado do Oscar, que graças a essa obra teve sua redenção e levou a estatueta de melhor filme para sua estante.

Frank Costello (Nicholson), é um típico mafioso dos tempos atuais. Irlandês vivendo em Boston (USA), Costello praticamente comanda o crime organizado da cidade. Com isso se torna inimigo número um da policia estadual. É ai que começa o jogo de gato e rato.

Querendo estar sempre um passo à frente da lei, o mafioso infiltra seu pupilo Colin Sullivan (Damon) dentro da policia. Por ter um ótimo desempenho e ser acima de qualquer suspeita, o rapaz sobe rápido de cargo e logo se encontra dentro da unidade de investigações especiais, que é justamente onde se encontra o caso de Frank Costello. Mas o que eles não contavam é que existe o outro lado da moeda (aí sim, fomos surpreendidos novamente), é quando entra o desacreditado Billy Costigan (DiCaprio), sem muito destaque na polícia e uma família com o nome sujo na praça, o rapaz é submetido a ser o infiltrado do lado policial no mundo do crime. Para que isso ocorra de uma forma perfeita, Costigan é dado como expulso da polícia e preso. O segredo é mantido a sete chaves  pelos policiais Digman (Wahlberg) e seu superior Capitão Queenan (Martin Sheen), que são os líderes da operação para prender Costello. Não demora muito para que o rapaz consiga entrar no mundo do crime. Graças ao seu primo, um traficante pequeno, Costigan é introduzido ao submundo e rapidamente chega a Costello (em uma sequência  que dói até em quem está assistindo, o mafioso, tenta pela dor física, descobrir se  Costigan é um infiltrado da polícia). Assim, ambos os lados percebem a existência de informantes agindo por ali. Com isso, o filme torna-se eletrizante, chegando muitas vezes beirar o imprevisível.

A vida dos dois rapazes é cheia de coincidências  e cruzamentos. Uma delas (inútil aos olhos do filme) , Sullivan e Costigan são apaixonados pela mesma mulher, a psicóloga da policia Madolyn (Vera Farmiga). O chifre no caso fica por conta do personagem de Damon. Em uma sequência  de tirar o fôlego, Billy consegue descobrir onde Costello vai encontrar-se com o seu informante. Chegando ao local (pasmem, um cinema pornô), Costigan  consegue encontrar os dois, mas não consegue ver a cara do outro infiltrado que, ao perceber que está sendo seguido, foge dando sequência a uma ótima cena do filme. Até o seu final o filme reserva boas emoções e surpresas para quem o assiste.

Com um desfecho surpreendente, é um ótimo exemplo do ditado ‘’ Jogar merda no ventilador’’. Scorsese apostou principalmente na força de seus protagonistas. Em mais uma atuação típica de Nicholson, beirando o sinistro e o cômico (assim como em Batman e O Iluminado) . E principalmente em DiCaprio, seu queridinho. Vale ressaltar também a excelente atuação de Mark Wahlberg, que mesmo não sendo um dos protagonistas, da vida à um corrosivo policial de mal com a vida.

Inspirado em Conflitos Internos, um filme policial de Hong Kong. Os Infiltrados pode ser considerado um clássico gangster do Séc XXI que deu a Scorsese (mesmo em meio a protestos a favor de A Pequena Miss Sunshine), um lugar ao sol entre os diretores que já levaram o tão cobiçado Oscar. Além de melhor diretor, levou para casa também como melhor filme, melhor montagem e melhor roteiro adaptado.

Com uma trilha sonora tão violenta quanto o filme ( De Stones passando por Beach boys até chegar na pesada gaita de foles do Dropkick Murphys) Os Infiltrados marca seu nome no cinema gângster mundial.

Onhan Mew’n lainaaminen vielä edes vähän coolia? Sanokaa, että on!

Oon kuumeessa ja oloni on heikko. Oikeastaan oon ollut sitä varmaan lauantaista asti, mutta en ole välittänyt. En sairasta oikeastaan koskaan ja otan tämän nyt tosissani. Täten pyrin lepäämään koko päivän kotona, juomaan teetä, perumaan typerän palaverin ja NYRKKEILYHARKAT sekä kirjoittamaan luentopäiväkirjaa. Taustalla soi Mew, Radiohead ja BEACH BOYS. Vuonna 2002 oisin ollut cool.

Mulla on kaks “kokonaista” veljestä (oon kuopus) ja joskus ala-asteella meidän piti perustaa yhdessä Beach Boys-niminen bändi. Jotku lukijoista varmaan tajus, miks toi läppä ois ollu niin HULVATON!! Loput ei hiffannu tai sit luuli tajunneensa väärästä syystä. Kunpa nuorempi isoveljeni ei olisi sortunut vahvoihin huumausaineisiin jo seitsemännellä luokalla.

Eilen valittiin ainejärjestö- ja tiedekuntatasoille uusia TOIMIJOITA. Itse vietin päiväni kotkien sekä kotkahenkisten tyyppien kanssa opiskellen, syöden, jutellen ja sitten DEMOKRATIAA juhlien. Ensin mentiin Kannun eli tiedekuntajärjestömme vaalikokoukseen. Meno yltyi ISOKSI hassutteluksi kun ehdotimme hallitukseen TOISIAMME! Eeeei HYVÄÄ TALVIPÄIVÄÄ! Voi sitä naurun remakkaa, minkä moinen toiminta sai demokraattista toimenpidettä seuraamaan tulleessa yleisössä aikaan. “Ei vittu kotkat, teillä lentää läppä ihan millon vaan ja mistä suunnasta tahansa!” Näin uskon opiskelijoiden demokraattisen painoarvon yhteiskunnassamme heikkenemisestä vakavasti huolestuneiden valtiotieteilijöiden ajatelleen, kun Lede ja mä tanssitettiin 9-vuotiaiden tyttöjen ruumiimme salin eteen. Tuo vika sivulause ei nyt kuulostanut ihan siltä, miltä piti.

Demokratia on lempi-ismini. Kuvassa demokratia toteutuu Berliinissä keväällä 1945.

Kannun puheenjohtajaksi valittiin kaverini Daniel, joka oli varmasti hyvästä vastaehdokkaasta huolimatta loistoveto. Äänestin häntä lähinnä seksuaalisten vastapalvelusten toivossa. Muutkin isot virkamiestittelit menivät just hyville janareille. Hallituksen varsinaisiksi jäseniksi oli sen sijaan jopa TUNKUA. Esittelykierroksella vielä hymyilin, mutta sitten näin yleisön joukossa haikeita ilmeitä ja häveten ymmärsin, mitä olin tekemässä. En yksinkertaisesti VOISI käyttää hyväksi kotkablogin minulle taannoin antamaa JULKKISSTATUSTA sekä selväksi tekemääni verbaalista älyäni vaaliprosessissa. Täten esittelyvuorollani hassuttelin vähän (I was fumin’!) ja testamenttasin ääneni kotkaliiton nuoremmalle edustajalle, tulevalle VTK Ledelle. Äänestin Ledeä, mutta hän ei minua. Tässä tapahtui selvästi jonkinlainen kommunikaatiokatkos.

Noh, kaikki meni hyvin ja vähemmän pätevät sekä eivät niin tunnetut ehdokkaat huokaisivat helpotuksesta, kun pääsivät vallan kahvaan päättämään, missä tulevia oksennuksia siivotaan ja käytetäänkö siihen varrellista moppia vai ihan vaan luutua. Voisi siis sanoa, että valtamandaattini tuli selväksi viimeistään siinä vaiheessa, kun KIELSIN Metsätalon luentosalia äänestämästä minua. Ja rahvaat tottelivat.

En siis päässyt hallitukseen. Läpi menneet kaverimme Aarni sekä Sara ovat varmasti Kannun tulevan hallituksen kovimpia linjanvetäjiä. Molemmat myös menettivät kosketuksensa todellisuuteen välittömästi valinnan jälkeen eivätkä puhuneet ainejärjestötason edustajille koko illan aikana. Aarni myös sammutti juhlasikarinsa otsaani ja haukkui homoksi.

Polhon kokouksessa asetuin kuitenkin “ehdolle” ainejärjestölehtemme POLEEMIN päätoimittajaehdokkaaksi ja huikean taistelun tuloksena pääsin sinne! Neljän muun tyypin kanssa.. Tein kuitenkin selväksi, etten suostu kompromisseihin ja seuraava numeromme on SUURI SEKSIPOLEEMI. Vuoden 2010 painokset alkavat myös Antsan Kotkatervehdyksellä ja loppuvat Leden pitämään “just hyvien bnth-tyyppien top-10″ -palstaan. Jokainen lehden lukenut saa lisäksi 50 euroa (Antsalta)!

Nyt meen sohvalle röhnöttään. Jos joku vois tuoda jaffaa ja keksejä, niin wouldn’t it be nice? (En tiedä, mistä tätä läppää vaan tulee!!!)

Maailmanhistorian kovin biisi?

Il surf è da sempre un genere di culto, con le sue regole e le sue eccezioni. In questo cofanetto incredibilmente curato ci si può perdere tra le grezze scale cariche di fuzz delle chitarre che anticiparono in qualche modo le sonorità del garage e del punk. In Cowabunga! si trova tutto quello che c’è da sapere per partire a esplorare le rotte di questi suoni che hanno del miracoloso. Un viaggio che dal 1960 arriva, attraverso quattro dischi, al 1995, in 82 canzoni (!) e 66 pagine di booklet.
Si parte con i Fireballs e si chiude, giustamente con Dick Dale. L’interesse del box si concentra principalmente sul versante strumentale tranne che per qualche doverosa incursione in casa Beach Boys e Jan & Dean. Accanto alle più famose Miserlou, Pipeline e Surfin’ Bird si possono finalmente ascoltare perle dimenticate come Jezebel o Moment of Truth. I primi tre dischi sono quelli di maggior interesse anche se nell’ultimo fanno bella mostra i soliti Man or astro-man? e i favolosi Aqua Velvet (di cui in Italia non si trova nulla ma che ogni surfista dovrebbe fare carte false per avere) con le loro sinuose trame estive, notturne, tra surf, western e mood latino.
La Rhino ci ha regalato un’opera immensa dal valore unico che potrebbe aprire porte uditive sorprendenti. Dopo aver incontrato questa musica potreste buttare tutti gli altri dischi, comprarvi una tavola e aspettare l’onda in ci scomparire per sempre.

My dad loves the Beach Boys, so I grew up listening to “Sloop John B.” In the song, Brian Wilson sings, “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on.”

That was how I felt at approximately 8:15am on Tuesday, November 17, 2009.

Let me give you a short prologue.

Back in August, my friend Elizabeth had asked me to take a look at the website of a luxury resort in Turks & Caicos where she and her husband, along with several of their friends, owned a condo. I made some recommendations, and over the following months, what began as a favor for a friend grew into a six-page proposal for online marketing.

Elizabeth called me on Thursday the week before to tell me that my proposal had been approved. The Tuscany was my biggest client to date, and represented a major turning point in my career as a freelance marketer and copywriter.

I was very excited.

The next day, Elizabeth booked plane tickets for herself, Paul Hassell, and me. Paul is a talented outdoor photographer who would be taking the pictures and shooting the videos that would bring the spice to all The Tuscany’s marketing initiatives for the next eight months.

Synchronizing the schedules of four busy people had taken hours of phone calls and emails, but by the grace of God, we had managed to carve out three full days to work between two days of travel.

I was working out the final details with Elizabeth on the phone—everything from international cell phone coverage to sunscreen—when she reminded me to bring my passport.

Still incredulous that so many variables had worked to our favor, I hung up the phone and bounded up the steps to my room. I keep my passport in my humidor whose humidifier I never remember to fill. At least my passport smelled like a pipe-smoking old man.

I opened it up to reassure myself that everything was in order, and that’s when my stomach did a back flip: as of May 20, 2009, my passport was expired.

On Monday at about 4:55pm, I gave Elizabeth, my friend Ben’s mother-in-law, the worst possible news, given our unique circumstances. Her response was two words: “Oh —!”

Use your imagination.

We agreed that the first order of business was to drive to the Post Office before it closed and see if they could offer any advice. I pulled in the parking lot four minutes later and slipped through the door before the woman locked it.

“Oh, you’re a sneaky one,” she said.

I smiled.

I waited in line for the woman on the far left to finish up with an elderly woman.

While I was waiting, I noticed that the post office worker had a cross taped to her plastic name plate. Cards with scriptures printed on them were also taped in several places.

This was encouraging. As a Christian, she might be more willing to help me.

“What can I do for you?” she asked in a voice thick and sweet with molasses. This was the voice of a woman who was happy because I was the last customer of the day.

“Well, I’ve got a big problem,” I said.

“Don’t tell me that!” she said. “It’s the end of the day.”

I went on to explain that my flight for Turks & Caicos left at 9:30 the next morning and my passport was expired.

The smile on her face sank into a frown.

I finished with the backstory. “Is there anything I can do?” I asked.

“Oh, you’re screwed” was her answer.

Em Como Se Fosse a Primeira vez (50 First Dates), Henry Roth, interpretado por Adam Sandler, é um solteirão que não quer assumir compromissos. Vive no Havaí, onde trabalha como veterinário, em um aquário, cuidando de morsas e outros seres marinhos, e é famoso pelo grande número de turistas que conquista – sua maior especialidade é mentir para conhecer as mulheres que visitam a região e sumir da vida delas quando as férias chegam ao fim.

Mas sua vida muda completamente quando encontra Lucy (Drew Barrymore) no café local. Henry logo percebe que não está diante de apenas mais uma missão de seduzir e abandonar: primeiro, porque ela não é turista; e segundo, porque Henry parece ter visto algo mais nela. A primeira abordagem é um sucesso – os waffles do café da manhã dela e as mãos dele cheirando a peixe se tornam o elo da conversa -, mas no dia seguinte a jovem moça age como se nunca o tivesse visto antes.

Logo Henry descobre que Lucy sofreu um grave acidente que tirou sua memória de curta duração, ou seja, ela se esquece dos fatos recentes durante a noite e passa a viver sempre o mesmo dia. Dessa forma, ignorando sua própria regra de não namorar garotas da cidade e esquecendo o seu lado Don Juan, Henry sente-se apaixonado e percebe que será obrigado a conquistar Lucy, dia após dia, para ficar ao seu lado. E para isso, não mede esforços e vive muitas loucuras.

Mas nem tudo sai como planejado. O jovem veterinário tem o sonho de navegar para o Alasca para estudar a vida submarina das morsas, mas com as conquistas diárias, precisa abandonar o seu plano. Lucy, percebendo o esforço de seu ‘namorado’, resolve acabar o relacionamento com o rapaz. Apaga-o de seus diários e passa a viver como se ele nunca tivesse aparecido em sua vida.

Dessa forma, Henry pode viajar (mesmo com o coração partido) e Lucy passa a ensinar arte – sua profissão antes do acidente que a deixou sem memória – na clínica médica que recebe tratamento. Só que o amor acaba sendo mais forte e os dois vão descobrir isso, de alguma maneira.

O final do filme, obviamente, emociona os mais românticos e mostra que o amor – independente de todos os problemas – consegue sobreviver quando é realmente verdadeiro. Pode ser clichê sim, mas este longa-metragem tem muitos aspectos positivos. Reúne dois ótimos atores (Drew Barrymore e Adam Sandler), tem bons diálogos (ingrediente essencial para o gênero comédia-romântica) e participações bem especiais, como no caso de Rob Schneider, no papel de um velho havaiano muito bobo e, às vezes, engraçado.

Para encerrar, há dois personagens fofíssimos: o pingüim e a morsa. Um mais engraçado que o outro… A-DO-RO!

Finally feeling well after three weeks of pure awful. Being sick is the worst feeling. But I’m now all better, thank God.

The foliage has been amazing the past month here; just beautiful.

Downtown Bethesda

We’re starting to get ready for the holidays. One more day of teaching (Monday), and two days of work (Tuesday and Wednesday), and off until December. I can’t wait for a mini-vacation!

I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys a lot in the past week. They are so good. The lyrics, the harmonies, the melodies – it’s incredible. My favorite songs are “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows”. As interesting his life has been, Brian Wilson is a genius. Love it.

Next week, my sisters want to go to the mall on Black Friday at 5 AM; they asked me to go. I’m not sure if I want to do it, but if there are great sales at the time, then maybe…

C’è odore di ruggine per strada. C’è aria di pioggia e profumo di ferro. Sale dalle fabbriche e si mischia con l’umidità di questo pomeriggio appena iniziato. Arrivo in ufficio che non c’è nessuno, le vetrate lasciano entrare una luce opaca.

Attraverso la sala principale, giro a sinistra. “Seconda divisione”. Apro la porta. Scendo le scale.

La nostra stanza non è un granché, ma io, da brava principale, ho pensato di abbellire le pareti con un po’ di foto, cartoline, disegni, poster, verniciate colorate. Non è proprio l’opera di un fine arredatore, ma fa respirare un’atmosfera accogliente, come quella che dovrebbe avere una sala prove di un gruppo rock: il genere di cose che serve a far star bene i miei “subalterni”. A dir la verità, di subalterni ne ho solo uno. E suppongo che presto non avrò più neanche quello. Ago è uno molto in gamba, attento, diligente, appassionato, pieno di intuizioni e interessi. Ed è una persona onesta.
Certo, non è propriamente il campione della cosiddetta “competenza sociale”: la timidezza gli incide l’animo così a fondo che il viso, i gesti, la voce, tutto da fuori riflette inesorabilmente quel marchio che sta dentro e non si cancella. 31 anni, e le uniche donne della sua vita sono, sono state e probabilmente saranno sempre, la madre e le ragazze delle sue strisce. Ago, infatti, nel tempo libero, fa il disegnatore erotico e gestisce il club del fumetto insieme a un fisico elettronico, Dragan, dalla cui matita escono i migliori supereroi di Kalamazoo. C’è chi lo potrebbe chiamare uno sfigato, ma a me lui piace e poi questa etichetta sembra sempre un po’ infelice e insensata, come la maggior parte delle etichette, in fondo, è cosa nota.

Riga in mezzo, capelli ricci fino alle spalle, tunica al ginocchio e pantaloni stretti di cotone rosso. Quando mi vede, si sistema il cordoncino che gli gira intorno alla testa, all’altezza della fronte e abbassa lo sguardo per qualche istante per poi rialzarlo con un sorriso incastrato su una faccia inebetita.

-Ciao, mi hai chiamato tu, vero? Hai saputo del Consiglio? Io… non so cosa dire… mi dispiace.

E lui, mentre a testa bassa gioca con un pennarello, borbotta:

-Sì, sì, ho saputo. Non importa, non è colpa tua, tu non c’entri. Il tuo progetto era molto buono. Il tuo progetto era ottimo. Non te lo hanno neanche fatto presentare… Sono stati dei bastardi. Non è colpa tua. Il tuo amico è stato grande. Sarà quel che sarà, sarà quello che vorranno al Palazzo Ottante… Tra pochi muniti c’è la riunione dell’Ufficio, ora gli altri sono a pranzo.

-Come hanno preso la notizia?

-Abbiamo seguito tutto in diretta, dal pannello in sala. Qui eravamo in pochi. Un paio della prima divisione tutti esaltati perché hanno trovato un nuovo reperto (…Aladdin Sane o qualcosa di simile…), il capo e io. Li odio quelli della prima divisione. Gli altri erano lì al Consiglio con te. Come l’hanno presa? Il capo stava prendendo un caffè e voleva far finta di non seguire, se ne stava seduto sul divanetto, con il nuovo disco in mano mentre gli altri due gli pendevano dalle labbra. Ma lui stava zitto, ascoltava la diretta, era in tensione per il tuo ritardo, perché non avevi il progetto. Il reperto non era una gran preoccupazione in quel momento, era… diciamo…un interesse di secondo ordine. Poi, quando il Presidente ha cominciato a provocare, si è alzato, ha sbattuto il disco per terra, ha dato una spinta a uno di quelli della prima divisione e si è fiondato davanti al pannello. Dovevi vederlo, Oslo, dovevi vederlo. Sono stati minuti impagabili. La Roi si è presa tutti gli insulti coniati dalla notte dei tempi, più alcuni creati apposta per l’occasione.

-Non era arrabbiato con me?

-No, non credo. E quando Alexis è intervenuto, è andato in estasi. Sviolinate a non finire. “Se tra un mese abbiamo ancora un ufficio, a questo gli offro il lavoro”…

-Di sicuro lo accetterebbe.

-Oslo, c’è altro di cui dobbiamo parlare. C’è qualcosa di importante, importantissimo che devi vedere, anzi ascoltare…

Veniamo interrotti dall’interfono: “Tutti i cercatori sono pregati di venire nella sala riunioni”.

Il capo si mette le mani in faccia e la schiaccia e allunga in una smorfia di stanchezza, poi sospira e inizia a parlare:

-Non dovevano esserci riunioni oggi. Doveva esserci un incontro, nel mio ufficio. Tra me e la qui presente: Oslo. Per l’occasione, io avrei atteso paziente dietro alla mia scrivania, l’avrei guardata entrare con la testa bassa, l’avrei osservata sedersi e sistemare con imbarazzo la coda che le era finita tra le gambe. Le avrei ricordato che si era presentata a una fondamentale audizione pubblica in ritardo e non preparata, le avrei ricordato che si era caricata ostinatamente di una responsabilità di cui non ha avuto rispetto, le avrei ricordato che ci aveva esposto alla vergogna della sciatteria. A quel punto, l’avrei vista tartagliare qualche scusa. Poi, l’avrei licenziata.

Bene, un inizio di riunione esaltante. Perfetto per mettermi a mio agio.

-Ma. Ma. Il destino si è scomodato per l’occasione e ha pensato bene di scombinare le carte in tavola. Così, come tutti sappiamo, su questo ufficio si è abbattuto qualcosa di ben peggiore di un’umiliazione dovuta a un impiegato distratto e negligente. Qui si è abbattuta l’umiliazione dei potenti! In 48 anni, non una sola volta ho avuto occasione per volere infangare il sacro nome di questa città. Ma qui, qui, ci troviamo innanzi a un affronto premeditato o sconsiderato alle gloriose origini di noi Cercatori del Rock! Un affronto che arriva diretto dalla Presidenza e forse anche dal Consiglio! Per questo, ora, in questo mese che ci divide dalla decisione di farci chiudere o meno, dobbiamo tenere la testa alta, sfoderare la nostra dignità! E per questo, faremo un sit-in di protesta. Porteremo un po’ di musica nella piazza principale (come del resto voleva fare Oslo, le va riconosciuto), e distribuiremo volantini. Ricorderemo la storia di Kalamazoo, ricorderemo perché siamo nati e dimostreremo che siamo linfa per questa città.  Fw>>

A me viene da ridere. Ago si nasconde dietro a una cartellina e fa quello che non va fatto quando devi far in modo di non ridere e di non far ridere il tuo complice: sussulta, trema, fa intendere che è crollato di fronte alla tensione. Quindi mi accodo e rido anche io.

-Cosa c’è che non va?

-Scusa capo, mi ha fatto ridere il nome, scusa anche a te… è l’enfasi che di solito mi fa quest’effetto.

-Beh, di enfasi ne servirà tanta. Sappiatelo. L’enfasi è il carburante degli spiriti.

-Uh, siamo in vena di sarcasmo e polemiche, Oslo. Come se le circostanze in cui ti ritrovi si addicessero a uscite del genere. Sempre molto audace, sempre senza vergogna, complimenti. Nel frattempo, vi distribuisco le bozze del volantino principale: l’ho buttato giù a pranzo.

Tralascio di riportare il contenuto del volantino perché è solo un concentrato trascurabile di retorica e ridondanza. Ma vi racconto, in breve e nel caso non lo sapeste, cosa ci ha portati fin qui.

Come noto, 165 anni fa la catastrofe ha ridisegnato terre e mari. Nella più violenta e terribile creazione della natura che l’umanità potesse ricordare, fu spazzata via gran parte di questa e delle sue opere. Prima della catastrofe, cinque database, con gran parte della conoscenza umana, furono dislocati nelle zone che si ritenevano più sicure. Dentro a ogni database, furono caricati sia file, sia materiale “hardware” come copie di fondamentali opere d’arte, immagini, libri, album, tessuti, plastici di luoghi, fiale con sostanze, eccetera. Ogni database è composto da dodici casse: i file sono in una di queste, il resto è contenuto nelle altre undici. Architettura, pittura, scultura, letteratura, spettacolo e cinema, storia e filosofia, biologia e medicina, religione, scienze matematiche, chimica, informatica. Uno dei cinque database, quello che ha la quantità più ricca e preziosa di reperti, è a bordo di una nave, in mezzo all’Oceano Pacifico. Dei cinque database, solo due se ne salvarono: il museo galleggiante e quello nell’antico Nord Africa, a Heron. I fondatori di Kalamazoo vengono da lì.

Heron era solo un villaggio, costruito da una comunità di sopravvissuti raccolti dalle acque del Mediterraneo. Ora è un impero. L’heron, o bennu, o phoinix, significa fenice, simbolo di rinascita: quel luogo doveva essere destinato a segnare il nuovo inizio. La sua fondazione fu però a breve segnata da un progetto autoritario che prese piede, spontaneo e ineluttabile, in una generale cecità alimentata dal bisogno. Un giorno, colui che sarebbe stato ricordato con il nome di Cassius, si trovò tra i pensieri uno che era particolarmente crudele, uno che più o meno recitava così: “Ehi, ma lo sai che vi dico? Che io voglio tutto il potere. Qui la gente è traumatizzata ancora, siamo tornati all’epoca primitiva o poco più. Pensa solo a cercare cibo (e quasi tutte le specie sono estinte, quindi c’è poco da cercare). Si lotta ancora contro la morte dopo averla vista in faccia e nella sua faccia peggiore. Si lotta per la sopravvivenza, contro la fame, contro le malattie. Il database serve a ben poco. I bisogni sono primari. Quindi, io ne approfitto. Mi prendo il cosiddetto monopolio della forza, che poi sta alla base di ogni vero stato. Faccio il leader, mi circondo di un gruppetto di gente che dà ordini su quello che va fatto e su come farlo, li faccio sentire al sicuro e intanto divento il capo assoluto. Faccio un popolo di guerrieri in pochi anni, e poi mi conquisto tutto quello che posso perché bramo un potere leggendario. E vi dico di più. Dato che la situazione volgerebbe molto a mio favore, distruggo il database. Si torna alle origini. Mi tengo solo ed esclusivamente armi e medicine”. Le cose si misero proprio male, la sua fame fu assecondata dalla maggioranza e solo un piccolo gruppo si oppose: “Noi siamo contrari. Combatteremo contro la tua crudeltà”. E io vi ammazzo tutti, ecco cosa rispose Cassius. Dalla sua aveva una folla che con una mano nutriva e accudiva, e con un’altra condannava e frustava. Una notte, gli oppositori, una comunità di non più di trecento persone, riuscirono a prendere quasi tutte le casse del database e scapparono. Con loro avevano i file, l’intera parte scientifica e tecnologica, ingegneristica, architettonica, la  storia e la filosofia e una  porzione dell’arte (reperti di letteratura, cinema e musica). Il resto restò ad Heron, sotto la legge arbitraria di Cassius. Gli oppositori, guidati da Perpetua Sans e Milo Armonio, arrivarono sulle coste di ciò che era rimasto emerso del Marocco. Salparono con mezzi di fortuna e arrivano nella nuova Atlantide, fatta di montagne, colline e fiumi, un vasto lembo di terra rigurgitato dalle acque a migliaia di graffe dalle coste africane e europee. Qui avrebbero fondato Kalamazoo. E qui vennero raggiunti da una milizia di Cassius e la battaglia fu fermata solo da un uragano inatteso e provvidenziale che respinse i nemici. Non ci attaccarono mai più. Ma gli uomini di Cassius ancora ci controllano, vivono nascosti nei boschi, là da dove arrivano anche le famiglie, i nomadi, i solitari e gli avventurieri che chiedono cittadinanza o rifugio alla nostra città.

Ad ogni modo, quell’uragano che spezzò lo scontro, distrusse anche alcune delle casse che i difensori della libertà erano riusciti a strappare a un destino rovinoso: la fetta di arte sottratta al database di Heron si disperse come tanti fogli al vento.

Nei decenni, i governi di Kalamazoo hanno istituito dipartimenti e uffici per il recupero del materiale andato perso in quell’occasione. Solo sei anni fa, con la Presidenza Albert, furono  finanziate le ricerche sul rock, dopo che fu accertato che sulla nostra isola, più di un secolo e mezzo prima, andò perso anche questo capitolo di una storia straziata dagli eventi.

Finita la riunione, Ago mi trascina nella nostra stanza. Mi racconta che ieri notte era andato al laboratorio di Dragan per mostrargli delle nuove tavole:

-Stiamo lavorando a un fumetto con una superoina-supererotica. Una che se ce l’avessi dav… Oh, scusa…

Non si sa come mai, ma Ago si vergogna quando si tratta di raccontare che cosa disegna e cosa gli “suscita” quello che disegna. Soprattutto, se si tratta di raccontarlo a una donna, come si preoccupasse di mettermi in imbarazzo, come se fosse possibile.

-Insomma, stavo aspettando che staccasse, per andare a bere qualcosa insieme e discutere delle tavole. A un certo punto, mentre lavorava al solito condizionamento dei segnali, o forse all’acquisizione di nuovi dati con gli apparati sperimentali, capta delle onde epsilon a lungo raggio. Quelle che usa l’esercito dei mercenari, per esempio, per comunicare a distanza.

-E cosa avete sentito?

It is time. After much delay, mainly to dwell on the enormity of the material — I’m serious — I am reviewing Tonstartssbandht’s Dick Nights, and their ain’t nothin’ my procrastinatin’-ass subconscious can do about it (T-startss-bndt approved the album for download HERE, so check it out, PLEASE GOD).

Tonstartssbandht are already responsible for one of my absolute favorites of 2009, An When, so to say I approached Dick Nights with less than fully erect expectations would be a gross understatement. Now that I’ve heard it a few times, I can say with confidence their latest is at LEAST as good as their last turn, if not better.

If I were to put my finger square on the pulse of Dick Nights, it would land on — and caress lovingly — “Tahiti Nui.” It’s not only the song I’ve been trying to write for the last year (me and a lot of other people, me thinks), but the nexus of the efforts of several indie bands over the past 5-10 years (stay with me here).

“Tahiti Nui” brings to mind:

• My beloved “Winters Love,” in all its splendor (Animal Collective, I presume?);
• “Tane Mahuta” by Ruby Suns; 
• Geggy Tah, period;
• a Hawaiian vacation I’ve yet to take;
• several snippets from Our Brother The Native;
• fuckin’;
• more fuckin’ …

Whether it’s ukulele or a mandolin leading the charge is neither here nor there; if “Tahiti Nui” (it’s the name of an airline, and Tahiti Nui Mahalo means “Tahiti the great,” if you were wondering) doesn’t hit up some big-time sites in the coming weeks you truly know P4k has failed you once and for all.

Delivering a deep, resplendent, feeling cut like “Tahiti Nui” is one thing; to follow it up with a sunny orange slice of vocal bliss like “Konig” is just, well, crazy-wack-funky. And that’s GOOD. These melodies are so chewy and tasty I wanna dump them in my mouth like a whole fuggin’ BAG of Haribos and suck out the juice.

And look — here I’m all hott ‘n’ sweaty and I haven’t even gotten halfway down the shaft. Dick Nights is full of the Beach Boys-inspired, vocals-first, tropical music so many write about but so few actually nail (Ganglians, maybe Wondermints; that’s IT), and there’s so much more to it than that …

“Subtropic Gleme Rock” segues into white pillow-clouds of echo-raped vocals and tears of static … “High Roller” rocks the high frets on its bass like a goddamn hurricane while a chant circulates like fake $20 bills … “Seriously” blends Panda Bear purr and Aa plug-’n'-chug for about 2 minutes too long (the one song that overstays its welcome) … “Yo J.J.Hess” is a Wilson-brothers drone that once again conjures perfectly the new beach-bum sound … 

“Mimi Vari” adds more multi-tracked vocals and closes things out with style. AWWW HELL, I went and reviewed the whole album! Listen to it for yourself; I push a lot of mind- (not to mention pig-) fucking music on this site but Dick Nights is for the People.

If it weren’t for their band name these guys would probably be huge already. Shit who am I kidding? The mainstream isn’t ready …

Take that, early emo music! Ben Folds Five threw some poppy harmonies right in your faces! This song also features thrice the falsetto power of most other songs, making it extra awesome.

Mika – Grace Kelly

Starting now, this list may as well be called “mildly embarrassing music that Katie enjoys.” Sure, all of his songs sound alike, but Mika can falsetto with the best of them. (“Falsetto” is officially a verb.) And it’s only because I like this one better and believe in moderation with the head voice that I didn’t post “Relax (Take it Easy).”

The falsettiest song to ever falsetto. When I visited a friend in Austin over the summer, this was our jam. We adopted it when I danced out of an outlet mall bathroom and inexplicably launched into the chorus, and my friend declared, “I somehow knew that’s what you were thinking.” Then we heard the song in every bar we went to! It was a sign!

Here’s the latest batch of Music Musings and Miscellany’s unapologetically subjective selection of the twentieth century’s best 1000 singles.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION – Si Tu Dois Partir / Genesis Hall (Island 6064 1969)
In the period between the end of the sixties and punk, for the serious prog-rock, metal and folk-rock fan, the 45rpm seven inch single became a bit of a joke. Some bands (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) didn’t bother with them at all. For others, a hit single and a Top of the Pops appearance was a bit of a lark, not to be taken too seriously. Fairport’s cover of a Dylan song, in French, with chairback and milk bottle percussion (with an accident when one fell off the table and smashed left in the final mix) was a surprise hit. It’s not a comedy record, just light-hearted and gleeful.

LEE MORGAN – The Sidewinder / Part 2 (Blue Note 1911 1964)
Jazz artists, too, weren’t generally interested in singles. Most that were released were edits of album tracks aimed squarely at jukeboxes. The ten minute “The Sidewinder” by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan has become one of the best known post-bop standards, with its funky rhythm and catchilly repetitive central riff. In some ways, it’s one of the foundation stones of jazz-funk, acid jazz, fusion and the rest.

PRINCE – Sign ө the Times / La La La La He He He He (Paisley Park 28399 1987)
Stepping back from his tales of sex and Corvettes, Prince unleashed this unassuming little song that dug into the underbelly of the brash and flash eighties for which he himself was part of a symbolic triumvirate of pop stars, along with Jacko and Madonna, who came to represent the ‘me’ decade. The flipside – AIDS, poverty, the still real threat of nuclear catastrophe (remember Ronnie “let’s bomb Russia” Reagan was still president) were marked out, almost without comment. It’s still his most forceful and thoughtful song.

STEVIE WONDER – Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours / I’m More Than Happy (Tamla 54196 1970)
“Signed, Sealed, Delivered” represents the end of phase one of Stevie Wonder’s career when he was still just a cog (albeit a vital one) in the Motown hit factory. As his 21st birthday loomed, he held out for a new contract that would give him unprecedented artistic control – something almost unheard of at Motown – and would pave way for his classic period when he would fuse soul, pop, gospel, electronic music and funk into his own unique and brilliant vision.

TORI AMOS – Silent All These Years / Me and a Gun (East West YZ618 1991)
Out of the flood of singer-songwriters who’ve emerged over the last two decades, Tori Amos remains a singular talent, and the two sides of this single go a long way to explaining why. The first, a lush, beautifully orchestrated, literate piano ballad. The second, a chilling a capella recounting a harrowing rape experience.

CARTER FAMILY – Single Girl, Married Girl / Storms are on the Ocean (Victor 20937 1927)
This proto-feminist tune comparing the lots of the wed and unwed woman has become one of the best-loved, and oft-covered Carter Family tunes. With good reason.

NIRVANA – Sliver / Dive (Sub Pop 72 1990)
NIRVANA – Smells Like Teen Spirit / Even In His Youth (Geffen 19050)
Only a year separates these singles. The first a dipped toe into melodic pop rock, albeit with a lyric recalling a pre-school Kurt being shipped off to his grandparents’, and despite TV and ice cream, just wanting to be in his own home. The second a Pixies parody, and last minute addition to Nevermind, that made him a reluctant global icon.

BEACH BOYS – Sloop John B / You’re So Good To Me (Capitol 5602 1966)
Added to Pet Sounds at Capitol’s insistence, “Sloop John B” doesn’t really fit with the rest of the album, but as a single works just fine. A strange choice of song for a 45, it’s actually a Bahamian song about a wild party that took place on the Nassau waterfront the night that the John B was sunk and was originally entitled “The Wreck of the John B”

ULTRAVOX! – Slow Motion / Dislocation (Island 6454 1978)
Another classic from the Foxx era, and an inspiration from everyone from Gary Numan to Duran Duran. Don’t let that put you off, though.

THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH – Smiling Faces Sometimes / You Got the Love I Need (Gordy 7108 1971)
Less a band, more Norman Whitfield’s own experimental lab rats. The man was even more of a control freak than his boss Berry Gordy, and wanting a group a little less combative and more malleable than the Temptations he ended up with the Undisputed Truth. Many songs would be road tested by the Truth before being handed to the Tempts, but they did at least have one major hit they could truly call their own – this dark, paranoid masterpiece.

ROBINS – Smokey Joe’s Café / Just Like a Fool (Spark 122 1955)
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the smoking section. The first a 1933 show tune by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach about blind love, turned into an unparalleled piece of weepy melodrama by the rich tenor of the Platters’ Tony Williams. The Sabres of Paradise’s classic come-down instrumental has graced a million TV soundtracks, but still sounds fresh and sober. Wolf growls and howls his way through a typically apocalyptic blues, whilst the Robins encounter a problem when trying to hit on the girlfriend of a large and borderline psychotic café owner.

Retro-hip wool brand Pendleton, and surfer brand Hurley have teamed up for a special line of updated classics- Pendleton shirts, which were made famous by the Beach Boys in the 50´s and 60´s have been modernized by Hurley.

Clear Channel has launched a new streaming channel on iHeartRadio for the new film Pirate Radio. The movie, about renegade rockers in the 1960s off the coast of England, is full of great music by The Beatles, The Stones, Beach Boys, Dusty Springfield, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Smokey Robinson, David Bowie, Otis Redding, Cat Stevens and more.

The movie is about a group of DJs who “go rogue” and start a radio station on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, playing rock records and breaking the law all for the love of music. The songs they played united and defined an entire generation and drove the British government crazy.

It’s a great concept for a station and a perfect promotion of the film. The station has a website where you can listen, watch movie trailers and video clips, check out pictures and buy the soundtrack of the movie. I love the integration of on and offline media used to promote a real station based on a fictional retelling of a story about a real station….

Even the Oakridge Boys stole the line, but we have more class than to post that one, so here’s an ear cleaner instead.

Jag skrev för ett tag sen om Holiday Records, för undertecknad en ganska nyupptäckt pärla som släpper gratis indiepopsinglar varje fredag! Estetiken och uttrycket tycker jag påminner en hel del om det hos vår svenska favorit Sincerely Yours. Någa av banden hämtar influenser från tennis och segling, sol och vatten. Banden heter saker som Victory VIII och Girl Alliance.

En av medlemmarna från Horse Shoes, Jacob Graham, utgör tillsammans med Jonathan Pierce bandet The Drums. På Holiday finns deras pophit Let’s go surfing. Den är den perfekta blandningen av The Tough Alliance och Beach Boys.
