I’ve encountered my first 2010 release in Beach House’s Sub Pop debut release Teen Dream. Some of the blogs that I read are already saying nice things about the duo’s third full-length album, and I must agree with them.

Beach House is an indie band in all the polite senses of the word, and their songs really do sound like lush dreams. Victoria Legend has a fantastic voice that warrants both Nico and Mazzy Star comparisons, but she is more accessible with a blue-collar sensibility that feels natural instead of pretentious. The instrumental compositions offered up by Victoria and bandmate Alex Scally are nuanced yet satisfying, textured like a surrealistic landscape oil painting, but without the stagnation that can so easily accompany bands who play slower music meant to fill both space and time. Sure, this is a great headphone record, but also one that translates well to the old fashioned stereo (and I am thankful for a vinyl release).

“Norway” is the first single off Teen Dream, and it is readily available across the internets. Teen Dream hits US stores on January 26, 2010 in vinyl and CD formats. Also, according to Pitchfork, the album “will be released with a DVD containing a video for every song.”

*This is going to be the new review format for 2010 releases. Hopefully my ratings will be a little bit more clear than before; I came up with three categories to be added up and averaged in reaching the final grade for each song (as opposed to just assigning one number). The first category is sound proficiency. Questions I ask myself to come up with a score for this category are: how is the instrumentation? Does the song flow well? Are the vocals strong or weak? The second category is appeal. Does this song  have lasting appeal? Is it, over time, forgettable? The final category is related to appeal. Instead of long-term appeal, the question is a matter of right now. The first few times  I listen to the song, how much do I instantly adore or hate it? It is possible for a song to be not so great now, but could be great after some period of time. A final component to my reviews is satisfaction/bias. For example, if I am not too familiar with a band, I really dig their record, and was tough on their individuals songs I might give extra credit of up to 0.5 points on the final grade. Inversely, if I really dig a record by a band that I am familiar with, I could deduct up to 0.5 overall points because of bias…maybe I was being too easy.

Phew, I’m taking cover from that little storm going down in the Coeur De Pirate review comments and getting back to the reason why I started blogging- to share my excitement about all these wonderful artists I get to see! I am so excited to have booked a ticket to see Beach House do an incredibly intimate show at the Flea Pit in East London on December 9th. What a lovely little present! It’s a blessing to see this band play. Tickets were £6 and sold out super fast- understandably.

I really can’t wait to see this band again. When I saw them at Union Chapel their music completely washed over me and I felt completely engulfed in a truly wonderful sound. Victoria has such a soothing voice and Alex’s slide guitar is to die for. I love this band and I can’t wait to see them again.

‘Norway’

Purveyors of the most dizzyingly dreamy pop music around, organist/singer Victoria Legrand and guitarists Alex Scally are back with another track of breathtakingly fragile beauty, lifted from their ultra-hyped 2010 release Teen Dream. It’s not surprising to discover that ‘Norway’ was written on a long bus journey through the Norwegian mountains – it’s as cinematic and achingly expansive as its namesake. Victoria may sing beguilingly about “the season of the sun”, but you can almost feel the frostbite. A perfect example of how to do widescreen glacial pop, the song’s rushing melody rides waves of cascading, muted synths and twitching, fairground electronics before breaking into a heartbreakingly yearning chorus of the sort to shame Nico, swathed in layers of spiralling guitars and pounding drums. In short, it’s fantastic.

Perhaps the one flaw in Beach House’s previous works is that, by wrapping their songs in layers of gauzy, tissue-paper wooziness, they often obscured the raw emotion throbbing behind each of their tracks. ‘Norway’ lays it bare and is all the more heartbreaking for it. Gone are the trickling, twee organ notes and plucked guitar chords of old, Beach House have gone panoramic. And it suits them. MP3 after the jump.

“Norway” by Beach House

are you not the same as you used to be?

Yes, my aggressive stab at New Moon mania is INTENDED. I’ll admit I can enjoy marketable trash/pop culture/played-out vamp stories as much as the next sap, but when the casualties of hysteria reach this level, I’ve got to interject a WTF.

Hold on to your sanity as I illustrate this case of evolutionary atavism. Now the much anticipated Twilight sequel releases this Friday, but already incidents of stupidity are surfacing. One tweeny-bopper attending the LA movie premiere earlier this week suffered “severe trauma” after getting into a fight with another psycho girl over… wait for it…. the last New Moon poster. Not an autograph, not a celebrity snapshot, or even a movie ticket, but a fucking generic, mass-produced (by malnourished Chinese children who are too busy trying to eat to comprehend Twilight madness) movie poster. Jesus. If you planning on seeing the movie be sure to pack some mace. And upgrade to a switchblade if you’re hitting a mall theater or anywhere in middle America.

That was a long-winded explanation, but I have to make it clear that Robert Pattinson is never a nightly focus. My dreams are entirely age appropriate. And although I may not fantasize like a 16 year old, I DO love the new Beach House album, Teen Dream. The band has reemerged after their critically acclaimed 2008 Devotion, an album that made my own top ten with it’s haunting dream pop and eerie simplicity. Beach House fans are in for a treat with the new LP, which was recorded and produced entirely in an old, converted church in NY, with the help of esteemed/veteran engineer Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). The album drops on January 26th, and like Animal Collective’s epic Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2009, is sure to set a high standard for all 2010 releases.

The other day as I was sitting in front of my computer, I stumbled upon a Twitter post by Grizzly Bear’s frontman, Edward Droste. He tweet about the new Beach House song “Norway” being posted and that it was ‘fucking amazing.’ I do not know for sure if they are his exact words and I cannot go back and check. It appears that he has deleted his Twitter account (I hope he changes his mind.) When I first listened to the song, I expected to be blown away but I wasn’t. This song may take some time to grow on me. I’ll let you be the judge.

PREVIEW: LISTEN to the track at Beach House’s MySpace

Staring low and subtle, Beach House’s “Norway” quickly ups the pace to a rapid and frenzied gallop. Still, it maintains the dreamy pop narrative which band members Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally have perfected so well since 2006.

“Norway,” for those who didn’t notice the news earlier in the week, is the first offering from Beach House’s third album, Teen Dream. It’s an appropriate name for the band’s Sub Pop debut, as we can tell from the sound of this track at least. Themes lend to more youthful tendencies, and overall, it reeks of the type of teen pop charm you can’t help but appreciate. If the rest of the album’s anything like this, we’re in for a treat come its January 26th release date.

Their self-titled debut, Beach House, was named the 16th best album of 2006 by Pitchfork Media The have released a new single titled “Norway” that is as melancholic as it is autumn-y.
