THEME: Summer fun at the beach INVITATIONS: Cut round circles and color one side like a beach bal

THEME: Summer fun at the beach

INVITATIONS: Cut round circles and color one side like a beach ball. On the other side, use California beach slang, such as:

“Hey, dudes and dudettes–slap on your best beach gear and come hang out at the Indoor Beach Party. Don’t let winter chill you out! There’ll be a prize for the baddest beach threads, and we’ll have some really rad activities! Bring your fave beach snack for munchin’ and blow off this winter scene–totally!”

This is a fun party for all ages, from teens to adults.

MATERIALS FOR ACTIVITIES: Two surfboards or plain wooden boards of similar size; two large bowls; wrapped hard candies; two plastic pitchers; two clear plastic glasses; two or four rolls of Life Saver candies; large box of sand; 20 pennies; blackboard and chalk or whiteboard (or poster) and marker; team prize for the competitions, such as kiddie sunglasses for each team member; prize for best beach outfit, such as a pair of underwater goggles; music for dancing, if desired (Beach Boys, etc.) and stereo; prize for dance contest, if desired, such as a beach ball or water wings; video of old beach movie and VCR, if desired.

FOOD: The guests will bring snacks, and you can provide the cold pop–six-packs in various flavors, packed in an ice chest. You might also provide something more exotic, like a fresh pineapple. Set the food out on a table covered with a beach blanket or large beach towel. Serve in creative containers, like large seashells, a diver’s mask, little plastic boats, etc.

DECORATIONS: First of all, have the party room warm and well lighted, as the guests will be wearing summery clothing. In two clear corners, create two famous beaches, such as Malibu, Waikiki or Palm Beach. If you have local beaches, you could use those names. Label the beaches with signs and try to recreate something that beach is famous for. Borrow some potted palms for Palm Beach, or make palm trees on the wall with colored construction paper. For Malibu Beach, you might spark some laughter by setting up a scene with Malibu Barbie and Ken in their beach buggy, etc. Light blue cloths or curtains could hang on the wall as an ocean backdrop. You could display diving or surfing gear, if you have access to it. In other areas of the room hang colorful swimsuits, beach towels, beach posters and Beach Boys album covers. Near the refreshment table, you might set up beach blankets and umbrellas on the floor. Have Beach Boys surfin’ music playing softly in the background during the competitions.

BLOW-BY-BLOW: As guests arrive, assign them equally to the two (or more, if the group is large) different beaches. Each beach team then uses this time to come up with its own cheer. When the teams are complete, they each give their cheers, and the competitions begin.

Surf's up!

The first competition is the Surfing Race. It will require three people from each group, usually two boys and a girl. The teams choose their contestants before the race is explained. Give the boys from each team a surfboard or similar piece of wood, and they hold it between them while the girl sits on it. On a signal, the groups race to the end of the room and back. The team to arrive first gets a point on the board.

The next contest is the High Dive, which requires one representative from each beach. You (the host/hostess) provide the contestants with one pitcher of water each. On the floor are two empty glasses. These they must fill at least two-thirds full from the position of standing on chairs. The one who spills the least water on the floor gets the point for her team.

The next event is the Underwater Swimming Race. One contestant is chosen to represent each beach. Give each one a deep bowl filled with water at the bottom of which are several wrapped candies. He is seated at a table or may kneel on the floor in front of the bowl, keeping his hands behind his back. At the signal, the contestant must bob for the candies, getting them out with his mouth. The first one to get all the candies out wins the point for his team.

The next event, the Life-Saving Contest, is announced, and two representatives are chosen from each beach. The two partners stand four or five paces apart, facing each other. Give one side several Life-Saver candies, which they must toss, one at a time, to their partners. The other side must catch them with their mouths. The team which catches the most wins the point.

For the last event, the Buried Treasure Race, one contestant is chosen from each group. (Make sure that every person on each team has the chance to compete in at least one event.) This could be the tie-breaking event! A large box of sand is placed at one end of the room; the representatives line up at the other. Twenty pennies are buried in the sand, ten for each team. On a signal, the contestants race to the box, dig their ten pennies out with their hands, and race back. The first one back with all ten pennies wins the final point for her team. The beach with the most points on the board wins a team prize.

After this, you award a prize to the guest with the best beach outfit. Then serve the refreshments, and turn the music up. Guests may dance, if desired, or, after eating, you may show a video of an old beach movie. If you choose to dance, a spontaneous dance contest–whether ’50’s style or the current craze–adds to the fun, and you may award a prize to the winning couple.

At Conference Hound we are continuing to look at a variety of great conference destinations to help you plan your next conference, convention or trade show. As winter approaches we begin to think about warmer destinations, and Miami is “da place to be and da place to be seen!” So we looked into some venue options and found some other tips to get you started planning your next event in sunny Miami, Florida.

Looking for ballrooms? The Miami Beach Convention Center has four, along with 502,000 square feet of exhibit space.
Another large venue option is the Doubletree Miami Mart/ Airport Hotel & Exhibition Center. It’s the largest conference-hotel facility in South Florida with 140,000 square feet of prime exhibit space, and, as its name suggests, it’s very convenient to the airport and the Miami International Merchandise Mart.

But maybe you are looking to set a special tone for your meeting by choosing a more unique Miami location.
Trains, planes and automobiles or even boats Depending on what kind of person you are, getting to Ph

Trains, planes and automobiles or even boats
Depending on what kind of person you are, getting to Phuket can be achieved by any of the above. The veteran backpacker would use the coach perhaps, the high-end traveller the plane and the adventurer would surely use the boat. Well when I say adventurer, I mean it in the loose sense of the word.

By Boat
Arriving at Phuket by cruise ship is certainly an option if you are thinking about sailing the high seas. Ships arrive regularly from all over the world. The down-side is, these cruises are hugely expensive. A slightly cheaper alternative though, might be to travel to Phuket via the Malacca Straits or Singapore.

By Road
The island of Phuket is actually 885km south of the City of Angels, and is connected to the mainland by a 1200meter causeway. If you don’t mind a fourteen hour journey, then bus is the way for you, they run daily from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok. The good thing about the bus is that it’s reasonably priced, comfortable and cold! Beach life awaits but with this trip comes a complimentary high power cold air-condition unit above your head, so bring warm clothes for this journey. Apart from the length of the journey, the bus could be compared to an airline. They have cabin attendants bringing drinks and snacks, there’s even an in-trip movie. The trip itself is an overnighter and you arrive at Phuket early the next morning.

By Rail
Another way of getting to Phuket overland from Bangkok is the direct train route that is available. Again, it’s an overnight journey but it can be somewhat more comfortable than the bus. Sleeping births allow you to get a good night’s sleep but before going, a welcome nightcap in the buffet car at the end of train won’t go amiss. The train leaves from Hua Lumphong Station in Bangkok and then on to Surat Thani where you need to take a bus to complete the rest of your journey. Be prepared to rise early on the day you arrive at Surat Thani, Thais get up very early on most days so don’t expect a lie in.

Flying by Air To Phuket, Karon

Finally planes. Easily the most comfortable and quickest way to get to the island. The international airport at Phuket receives flights from all over the world as well as domestic flights from other cities including Bangkok. If you are on a time budget or you just simply yearn comfort, then the plane is the way to go.

Arriving and leaving

Now that you have arrived, it’s time to shake off travel fatigue and hit those beautiful palm fringed beaches and golden or white sands that stretch for miles. Resort destinations like Karon offer the sight of tiny palm coves and bays that inundate the coastline. This is where some of the most gorgeous and luxurious hotel resorts blend in with the natural beauty of Thailand. Horizon Karon Beach Resort and Spa located at the southern end of the beach and just a stone’s throw away from the famed Kata beach boast excellent service and wonderful views. The resort itself is set on some 16000sqm of land surrounded by a rain forest of lush vegetation. It is slightly set back from the main drag and offers a haven of peace and tranquillity and yet not so far from Karon’s entertainment and shopping districts. A complimentary bus service to Patong beach is also available. Other activities you might find yourself interested in around the Karon beach area are the extensive choice of marine activities such as diving and snorkelling. Honeymooners who stay more than four nights at the resort can enjoy extra service at the Karon Beach Resort Hotels where they will receive complimentary honeymoon gifts on arrival. Why would anyone want to leave.

Inside information Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, the land area is of around 543 sqm- whi

Inside information

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, the land area is of around 543 sqm- which is about the size of Singapore with a population at the current standing of approximately 320,000 people. Apart from its famed beaches, you will notice how green and mountainous the island is. Vast expanses of lush vegetation and tropical forests stretch across the island, which weave between a rather spectacular mountain range that meanders from North to South. The highest of which is Mai Thao Sip Song (Twelve Cains) at 529m above sea level

In historical terms, Phuket boasts of a deep ancient history, showing traces that early man existed there long ago. This has been keeping archaeologists busy for quite a while now, and will continue to do for some time to come. Tin was discovered several millennia ago on the island. They cannot pinpoint exactly when tin was discovered but cave drawings show that in ancient times, people did not mine the tin but found it, usually after some heavy rainfall. Phuket has long appeared on the charts of ships on foreign seafarers and marked as a good source of fresh water, firewood and pitch. The earliest settlers to the island were the primitive Semang Pygmie tribe that still exist in Malaysia today. These tribes were hunter-gatherers who fed from the fruits of the lush canopy rain forests of the island. It is thought that they lived there until they were forced out by tin miners in the mid-nineteenth century.

Pirates of Phuket

The coastal areas of Phuket were populated with the nomadic seafaring tribe called the Chao Nam. These were a small but sturdy race who were expert sailors and traditionally travelled from cove to cove feeding on shell fish, consuming all and then moving on. They were according to the first Europeans to arrive, pirates who robbed and stole and took slaves for transportation to Indonesia. It is said that tin mining was slow to develop here because of the pirate’s fierce reputation.

Affordable Tin, rubber and accommodation

Fast track a couple of hundred years, by 1972 the long recession in the tin and rubber industry paved way to a new industry, the tourism business. By the mid-70s tourists began to flock to Phuket, thanks to a glittering “Newsweek” article reporting on the undiscovered, beautiful mystical and affordable accommodation and hotels of Phuket. You now know the rest of the story…

Untouched

As ever, the beautiful palm fringed beaches of squeaky white sands that stretch for miles still remain. It is still virtually an untouched paradise, and a very special place to visit. Accommodation on the island is also very affordable and is available to all kinds of tourists, from honeymooners to families with small children. Karon beach is a long curvy beach of sparkling white sands and clear crisp azure sea. Karon beach claims fame to the Horizon Karon Beach Resort and Spa located at the southern end of the beach, accommodation is affordable and first class. Also available around Karon beach are the array of marine activities such as diving and snorkelling. Day trip excursions can also be arranged. Honeymooners who stay more than 4 nights may enjoy service at the Karon Beach Resort Hotels by receiving complimentary gifts upon arrival. While families who reserve a second inter-connecting room for their children can enjoy a 30% discount on the room-rate and a 20% discount on all beverages and food consumed at the hotel resort during their stay.

What a change a Cloudy Monday is from Sunny Sunday in Huanchaco.

Sunny Sunday:

Bodies colorful in bathing suits glut the beach and spill into the cold waves with squeals and shrieks. Children in sand-filled underwear build castles at the water’s edge to be lapped by the waves. Young couples lay close together on blankets, half-naked and oblivious of the rest of the world.

Massive tour buses have trucked in people by the hundreds to buy trinkets and splash in the ocean, eat ceviche and lie in the sun. All of Huanchaco is out to watch them, sell to them, wait on them. Taxis prowl the streets, and ice cream vendors are doing rapid business every few feet. Bars and restaurants Rob and I have eaten at alone for weeks now don’t have a single free table.

Impromptu soccer games spring up everywhere along the beach, bare-chested young people diving for the ball in sprays of sand, flinging themselves into the waves to fetch uncontrolled kicks. Keepers make grand saves that bury themselves in the sand.

Cloudy Monday:

Today there are only a few surfers practicing in the shallows, and a pair of elderly European tourists walking on the edge of the waves, hiking shoes in hand. A few little boys with bodyboards play by the pier, oblivious to the cold.

The empty beach is lain with fishing nets as the fishermen check them for holes, gather them carefully into bundles. A man in tattered surf shorts mends his net with a pointed wooden shuttle wrapped with translucent green filament.

Today the fishermen are unmolested by tourist cameras and halting questions in broken Spanish. Yesterday they made their money taking tourists out on their caballitos de totoro, keeping to the shallows but still illiciting screams of delight as the unstable little boats rocked with the waves. Today it’s back to fishing. They’ve lost their glamor.

A lone Lamborgini ice cream vendor sits on the curb, not even bothering to solicit the few people who wander by, and the man selling sticky-sweet neon orange turrones motions at them half-heartedly as we walk past. A few of the feather earring and hemp necklace vendors have come out, but there’s no one here to buy their wares.

Huanchaco is quiet once again.

Your road trip planner will be overstuffed if you try to explore all that the Big Island has to offe

Your road trip planner will be overstuffed if you try to explore all that the Big Island has to offer in one week. I know, because I just spent eight days there on the Kona Coast and didn’t even get to see much of the Hilo side. So, by combining my trip experience with recommendations from locals, here then is a two-week road trip that will give you the ultimate Big Island Experience.

I’d recommend staying one week on the Kona Coast and the next in Hilo to have a great jumping off point for your many explorations. We’ll start our road trip planning on the Kona side, the sunnier region. We stayed in the Kailua-Kona, site of the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (scheduled for October 11th this year) and home of the revered King Kamehameha, the leader who united the islands. It has a great waterfront and pier, where you could enjoy dinner each night with a view of the sun dipping behind the water horizon. My favorite was the Kona Brewing Company (baked garlic, home-made focaccia & melted gorgonzola dip).

Make sure to include plenty of beaches in your road trip planner. Snorkelers should go to Kahaluu Beach Park, surfers to White Sands Beach, privacy buffs to Kona Coast State Park, and beach lovers can choose from Anaehoomalu Bay, Hapuna Beach, or Mauna Kea Beach.

Other places to consider in your road trip planning in Kailua-Kona: The Hulihee Palace, Kokuaikaua Church, and Kamehameha’s Compound at Kamakahonu Bay. I found souvenirs and affordable wine at the Kona Wine Market. Include one Luau in your trip; I went to the Island Breeze Luau because it was right on the beach in the King Kamehameha Compound at the Kailua Pier.

Along the Kohala Coast, your road trip takes you north into some quaint towns like Hawi. The road ends a few miles past Hawi, where you’ll view the Pololu Valley (very dramatic!). But first, catch a tour at the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm (NELHA), the only Seahorse farm in the US. Stroll through the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the temple Kamehameha built to the war god to insure his success in battle. Keep driving up Highway 270 in North Kohala to the Lapakahi State Historical Park for a view of a typical 14th-century Hawaiian village and the Mo’okini Luakini Heiau. The original Kamehameha Statue is along this route, as well as a view of Maui. A mile from the Pololu lookout, enjoy a picnic at the Keokea Beach Park. On your way back, check out the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological District.

Along the southern coast on the Kona side, you’ll find Captain Cook, Kealakekua Bay, the Place of Refuge and Honaunau Bay. All of these make for a perfect full day’s exploration to add to your road trip planner, with historical places and monuments, great scenic shots of the bays and snorkeling/swimming at Honaunau Bay, considered the second best place to snorkel or scuba with turtles, fish, and huge coral growths!

Now it’s time to move your home base to the Hilo side to give you plenty of time to explore the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Leaving Kailua-Kona, include in your road trip planning, stops at South Point (the southernmost spot in the US), the Punaluu Bakery shop in Naalehu, and the Punaluu Black Sand Beach.

We didn’t spend nearly enough time at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park because the ranger told us the current lava flow was outside the park (in August, 2008, drive one hour to the end of Highway 130 in Kaimu, then hike 20 minutes over lava beds to the viewing area). Schedule two days in your road trip planner to fully explore the Kilauea Visitors Center, Halemaumau Crater, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation Trail, and a Crater Rim drive as well as make the sunset trek to the lava flow. Local Shannon Cormie says, “Seeing the ribbon of red lava snake its way down the side of the mountain and then thunder into the ocean is a sight you will never forget”.

One reason to place Hilo front and center in your road trip planning is because it’s so lush! David Carpenter, a local, recommends the Akatsuka Orchid Garden for its large assortment of orchids. It’s situated about halfway between Volcano and Hilo. Shannon recommends Banyan Drive, Liliuokalani Gardens, Lyman Museum & Mission House, the Pacific Tsunami Museum, and the wonderful botanical gardens like Nani Mau Gardens Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, and World Botanical Garden.

From there, you road trip takes you north to the Hamakua Coast with stops at the Akaka Falls and lunch in Honokaa. Then check out Waipio Valley, the birthplace of Hawaii’s kings, before heading for Waimea, a cowboy town with the Parker Ranch Visitor Center & Museum as the focal point.

Set aside a full day in your trip planner to explore Mauna Kea. Rent a four-wheel drive vehicle to climb to the top (13,796 feet) or book a full-day tour where guides will take you to hidden waterfalls, sacred spots and an observatory, treasured by astronomers around the globe.

All of the above will fill your Big Island Road Trip to the brim. And you’re sure to discover some new places as well. But take heart, if you don’t get to them all this round, you’ll have a perfect excuse to fill another road trip planner for your next visit!

Through its gorgeous rainforests, colorful culture, and beautiful and friendly people, everyone know

Through its gorgeous rainforests, colorful culture, and beautiful and friendly people, everyone knows that Brazil poses one of the absolute best vacation spots in the world—this is especially true with the 2016 Summer Olympics coming to Rio de Janeiro. But what not everyone may know about is the very solid investment potential granted by Brazil. For one, along with the prestigious honors of hosting the Olympics comes an automatic boost in the economy, further supporting its property investment potential. However, some investors may be wary of investing in Brazilian properties due to some common misconceptions such as lack of regulation. Of course, Brazilians surely know how to cut loose with special events such as there world famous Carnaval, but President Lula has brought both new hope and regulation to the country.

In fact, foreign investment is actually encouraged through 100 percent land and property ownership. Foreign investors will have to deal with a few exceptions but investment and overseas property location advisors such as International Property Mole can help efficiently guide you through such exceptions.

Investor are also enjoying the security provided by Brazil having already survived the trough of the recession, demonstrating excellent stock market progress, decreasing unemployment and strong GDP figures. This is all paired with all-time low lending rates which have been made possible because Brazil is currently one of the strongest economic powers in the world, proving this by having lent $10 billion to the IMF, where as just a few years ago they were borrowing from the IMF, demonstrating a surging economy. Buffering Brazil further is their extremely high USD deposits, impressive number of new oil discoveries, strong export industry, heavy investing in infrastructure, industry, education, healthcare, housing and in particular tourism, and more.

In addition, over the last few years, Natal, on the sun blessed north- eastern coast of Brazil, has seen an average property value increase of up to 20 percent or more a year. Encouraging even more confidence in investing is the robust property opportunities afforded through outright ownership by the developer. This means you get the luxury of working with someone with a full legal title and no debts or encumbrances, which eliminates the potential of unfair property seizures. The Palm Springs development in Natal, Brazil offers such an opportunity. Palm Springs also involves strategic phased build times. This promotes a controlled investment delivery, helping you establish a solid no-surprises ROI. And even though these investment perks abound, you’ll still be able to look forward to low development density, which means higher property values and less congestion.

Surrounded by beautiful tropical paradise Palms Springs Natal sits just 200 metres from one of the best beaches in Brazil.

And with a new airport being built in São Gonçalo (30 km from Natal) which will be the fifth largest in the world, property value is sure to continue climbing with this improved accessibility, featuring direct flights from major European cities, making development properties such as Sol do Atlántico Resort & Spa even more inviting.

Sol do Atlântico Resort & Spa is situated between Natal and Pipa in an area called Búzios/Tabatinga, which Brazilians consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the country.

But the airport isn’t the only thing that will help you get there—you can also take advantage of perks such as 100 percent finance at properties such as the Garupua Resort. Helping you along even further is the low reservation fee £1,000 which serves as the only payment until completion. And then you get to take advantage of a 70 percent guaranteed mortgage from completion.

The plots of land are situated in what will become an exclusive gated community with landscaped gardens and swimming pools within a 5 star luxury beachfront Garapua spa resort.

While some economists forecast that Brazil will be one of the future economic leaders, the future of investing in Brazil is happening right now.

PANAJI: Goa Governor S.S. Sidhu Monday warned that the ill-effects of global warming were fast knocking at the state’s doors and eroding its beaches.

Speaking at a civic reception in honour of President Pratibha Patil, Sidhu said: “Goa has started feeling the heat of global warming. Some of our beaches are being washed away.”

Sidhu’s statement comes in wake of nearly 10% of Goa beaches such as Calangute, Candolim and Baga being eroded by the rising sea.

According to a recent report compiled by the state Water Resources Department (WRD), the residence of Goa governor, Cabo Raj on a hillside which overlooks the sea, is under threat of erosion.

Remedial measures for protection of Cabo hill slopes in form of installation of cable anchors, inclined micro piles and vertical piles are already being undertaken on war footing to prevent the erosion.

Goa’s 105 km long coastline invites nearly two million tourists to the state annually. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Goa’s economy.

“Do you love me?”

Her voice is carried over by the sea breeze, tossed in midair by the noise on the beach and reaches his ear a second too late. Or so it seems. Cause he is silent for a while. She notices it.

“I love you in parts. In intervals. On particular days. In particular clothes. I guess I love you selectively.”

She looks at the sea. The crashing waves seem desperate to swallow the shore. They always have been. Or maybe that is not the case at all. Maybe the water that the brimming ocean tries to push off from its lap is trying to go back into its fold. It does not want to die, which it will, once on the shore. The small puddles it will make will disappear in thin air in no time.

“Then why are you not with someone whom you love completely?” Her tone is matter of fact but her feelings are not. The sea or the shore, the question rages within. She wonders if the waves exist only to fight the forces it can neither deny nor accept. Can that be its destiny?

“I haven’t thought about it,” he is lost in the flight path of a kite. It hovers over a hoard of fishing boats coming back home with the day’s catch. This is no hunt. There is no thrill for the bird. The fishermen are generous. They believe in sharing with nature what they get from it. The bird gives up the thrill for the sake of a basic need – hunger. It is more urgent and compelling. Some other day, a fish brimming with life and ready for a fight would make interesting prey, the eagle thinks as it holds the fishermen’s dead offering between its beak. Priorities is all that life is. The fish in the sea can wait.

“How can you not think about it?” She is not sure if he is paying much attention to the conversation anymore. But then, she could never tell. He always seemed lost in a world she could not recognize but saw flicker in his eyes.

“That is too much of a trouble. Besides I am comfortable with you. I don’t ask for more,” his eyes are still chasing the kite. They gazed at the bird mockingly.

“But don’t you want to love someone completely? Find true happiness in life?”

“Have you had Tiramisu?” His question takes her by surprise. Was he trying to evade the topic.

“No.”

“Do you miss not having Tiramisu?”

“No.”

“Do you crave for it?”

“No.”

“Precisely my point. If you don’t know what a thing feels, or tastes or looks or sounds like, you won’t miss it. No matter how great that thing is.” He looks at her in the eyes. He wants to know she has understood what he said.

“Explain to me in simple terms.” She liked things simple. He always complicated them. Or so she thought.

“I don’t know what loving someone ‘completely’ means. Hence I don’t miss it. Since I don’t miss it, I don’t crave for it. Hence I am content with my ’selective’ love. That is the only one I know. To me, that is the only one that exists.”

He stretches on the sand like a lazy dog and smiles at her gently. She watches him silently.

“Does that make you happy? The fact that it is your ignorance that gives you pleasure not your love?”

“I don’t know. But what I don’t know sure cannot make me unhappy, isn’t it?”

“But your love does not give you joy, does it?”

“I never thought love could make anyone happy. At least not for long. The lovers live a faked reality. They feed each other’s ego, giving each one a false sense of superiority. Like a balm, the gaze of their loved ones soothes their fractured self image. That makes them happy.”

“Tell me more.”

“mmm… The fact that they feel grander than the rest of the world is heady. But this game of pretense cannot last. Reality cannot be evaded for ever. You can only do that in asylums. Once the ego trip starts to wear off the love looks a lot less appealing.”

“You are not joking, are you?”

“No. I am not. Love as you see it is a constant craving for that high that the lovers experience in the beginning but never achieve again. Then there is disappointment, disillusionment, despair, blame. Love doesn’t exist after that. Only the search remains. The discontentment remains. Like a stain.”

“So are you saying that in your kind of love there is contentment because the desire is not for joy but comfort?”

“Yes.” His eyes are closed but she knows he is wide awake to every word they are saying now. Maybe more awake than with his eyes open. He lives for these conversations. He thrives on them. This is his reality. His world. A kingdom where he is the king and the court jester.

“But have you ever thought how that would make me feel? Like a shirt you bought on a sale!”

“I am sorry to hear that. But I can only offer what I have. There is no point wanting to have something I cannot afford. By the way, you know, there is nothing that stops you from walking away if you feel bad about being with me. You know that, don’t you?”

“I know. And you know that I won’t, don’t you?”

“No. I try not to presume.” It is hard to say when he is serious and when not. His voice always had a ring of mockery. A perennial strain of carefree laughter waiting to be unleashed on the world he existed in.

The sea looks a sheet a silvery white plastic in the moonlight. Somewhere in the distance, far from the shore, an invisible ship blows its foghorn. The day ends without much fanfare. As always. A drunk fisherman sings loudly as he fumbles back home through the dark. He sounds euphoric. Every body seeks a high in life. The only question is, in what and why.
