If your doing a presentation in LaTeX using the beamer class, a nice feature of it is that you may add a background picture to your PDF file in both, a global or individual way.

Global Setting of Background:

In the preamble of your TEX file write the command
\usebackgroundtemplate{\includegraphics[width=\paperwidth,height=\paperheight]{<file_name>}

Remember that: if your image file is not in the same folder than your TEX file, but in a sub folder you must give the sub-folder address as well.

Individual Setting of Background:

For a individual setting, write the same line as above just before the \begin{frame} command of the frame you want to edit, and then wrap it all with braces.

Vor kurzem war ich den lieben MediaMarkt besuchen, in welchem eine kleine Neuheitenmesse präsentiert wurde.  Unter dieser Neutheitenmesse hob sich dabei eine Kompaktkamera ganz besonders hervor: Richtig! Gemeint ist, wie schon aus dem Titel herauszulesen ist, die Nikon Coolpix Digitalkamera S1000pj. Warum findet diese Kompaktkamera also hier in meinem Blog Erwähnung? Ganz einfach: Die Nikon Coolpix S1000pj ist die erste Serien-Kompaktkamera mit integrierten Projektor bzw. Beamer, ohne eine Verbindung mit einem Computer oder Fernseher herstellen zu müssen. Mit jenem eingebauten Projektor kann per Knopfdruck ohne Probleme Fotos und Videos beispielsweise auf Wänden abbilden. Die S1000pj ist des Weiteren mit einem Nikkor-Weitwinkelobjektiv sowie 5 fach-Zoom ausgestattet. Der Projektor besitzt übrigens eine VGA Auflösung von 640 x 480 Pixel und macht in seiner Anwendung extrem viel Spass. Allerdings muss man ein ruhiges Händchen behalten, um die Projektor-Funktion nicht zu einer Kopfschmerzen erregende Wackelei ausarten zu lassen. Auch hält die Akkulaufzeit, wenn man die Projektor-Funktion durchgehend nutzt, lediglich 1 Stunde.

Ich durfte mit der Kamera vor Ort einige wenige Bilder fotografieren und war ehrlich gesagt von der Bildqualität enttäuscht, da jene an den Rändern leicht unscharf wirkten. Auch war die Auslöseverzögerung der reinste (lange) Horror! Meiner Meinung nach sollte man sich daher die Kamera um rund 400 Euro lediglich kaufen, wenn man diese Projektor-Funktion regelmäßig nutzt, da man für die gegebene Bildqualität und auch für die Ausstattung durchaus viel günstigere Geräte erhält. Ich warte daher bis Canon, Sony, Sigma, Panasonic und der liebe Rest zum Gegenschlag ausholen und eigene Produkte mit dieser netten Innvoation auf den Markt bringen. Dann wird auch der Preis sicherlich fallen.

Muchos nos irritamos con la maraña de advertencias de la clase Beamer cada vez que compilamos y sabemos que nuestro documento está libre de errores. Pero, sí, las advertencias continuan saliendo. Se dice que es algo relacionado con Beamer 3.07; de hecho, las advertencias no son nada importantes si bien sabemos que no es un error nuestro, pero es buen hábito depurar todas esas advertencias en virtud de ignorarlas. Bien se nos podría escapar una verdadera advertencia.

Compilando este sencillo ejemplo:

Se obtienen al menos cinco advertencias. Luego de la segunda compilación subsisten al menos tres de estas:

• Package pgf Warning: This package is obsolete and no longer needed on input line 13.

• Package hyperref Warning: Option `pdfpagelabels’ is turned off (hyperref) because thepage is undefined. Hyperref stopped early.

• LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/cmss/m/n’ in size <4> not available (Font) size <5> substituted on input line 6.

• LaTeX Font Warning: Size substitutions with differences (Font) up to 1.0pt have occurred.

Para eliminar esas advertencias:

• beamer.cls esta cargando el paquete obsoleto pgfbaseimage.sty que no hace nada, sino generar esa advertencia. Si pones un archivo con el mismo nombre <pgfbaseimage.sty> en algún lugar de tu directorio /texmf  o en el directorio de tu archivo tex conteniendo \RequirePackage{pgfcore}, la advertencia desaparece.

• Pon pdfpagelabels como false, situando lla opcion de la clase beamer así: hyperref={pdfpagelabels=false}

• beamerbasefont.sty define los comandos \Tiny y \TINY para escoger tipofuentes bastastante diminutas. Redefine al menos \Tiny o carga un tipofuente que provea ese tamaño, por ejemplo Latin Modern.

El nuevo archivo:

Quirky’s, erm, quirky approach to product design and marketing seems to be working. The company’s latest crowd-sourced gadget is the Beamer, which is not a German car that turns its owner into a boorish prig but an iPhone case with its own built-in flashlight.

And like its Powercurl cord-winder and Kickster Nano case, the Beamer production line will only be powered up when enough orders have been received — 500 in this case. The Beamer itself is a two-part plastic case with an LED lamp on the back and a recessed silicon switch on the side. Hit the switch once and you get ten seconds of bright light, enough time to snap a photo with the iPhone’s camera. Press it twice, quickly, and the light stays on until you press the switch again.

The case runs off a lithium coin-cell, like many bicycle lights, and should last for around ten hours before it dies. If you want one, sign up now and have your card billed for $32 when production starts.

Beamer comes installed with many themes and color themes. But, there are many custom themes out there you might be interested to use. A good list of such custom themes is maintained by Rogier Koppejan here.

To install a custom Beamer theme:

1. Copy the .sty files of the theme to the various subdirectories under the $(MIKTEX_ROOT)\tex\latex\beamer\themes\ directory. Ex: beamerthemeTorino.sty goes into the theme subdirectory, beamercolorthemechameleon.sty goes into the color subdirectory and so on.
2. Refresh the MikTeX file name database. (You may need to close all applications using LaTeX for this operation to complete successfully.)

Sometimes, when your presentation has too many sections and subsections, one slide is simply not enough to accommodate the whole table of contents. In such case, replace the code block

So, das war die IAA 2009. Meine Güte waren da viele Leute. Und Frauen ohneeeee Ende!!! – Aber zuerst zu den Mefteln.
Nichts überraschendes dabei, weil man natürlich dummer Weise vorher alle möglichen Publikationen gelesen hatte und wusste was einen erwartet. Die ganze Halle 11 war von Beamer gemietet – bzw. noch von Mini und Rolls Royce, deren Stände aber sowas von wie nicht verschwindend klein waren. Dort war natürlich deren neuer Eco-Flitzer ausgestellt, welcher ja echt ziemlich hübsch ist. Audi hatte einen chromfarbenen R8 ausgestellt, welcher die ganze Zeit geputzt werden musste ^^ (Wie eigentlich so jede Karre dort. Frage mich nur, warum die denen keine Handschuhe wie beim Snooker geben, würde die Sache einfacher machen.)
Bei Porsche war natürlich der neue Panamera ausgestellt, welcher echt ziemlich nice ist – aber natürlich scheiss teuer. Allerdings habe ich auch gut 100.000 Euro gespart. Bzw. werde es gespart haben. Der neue Cayenne gefällt mir so wenig, dass ich in der Tat keine Lust mehr auf ihn habe. Das hat mich ziemlich traurig gemacht. Mal gucken, ob Porsche das wieder gerade biegen kann. Aber der Promotionspot für den neuen 911 Turbo – welcher zum Glück immer noch wunderschön ist – war einfach mal supergeil gemacht. Hätte gerne mal die englische Version gesehen.
Und dann waren wir bei bei e-Wolf. Die haben in Kooperation mit dem Leichtbauzentrum der TU Dresden einen Elektroraser gebaut. Sehr hübsch und für läppische 100 Riesen bekommt man einen luftigen Sitz. Natürlich haben wir den Protoypen erstmal schön angegrubelt, aber uns dafür dann auch nett mit der junge Dame von der Pressestelle unterhalten. – Mal gucken, wann Top Gear ihn testet. Das wird ja quasi der Ritterschlag; vor allem, wenn er besser als der Tesla abschneidet
Erst nach dem Verlassen der Eingangstür viel uns natürlich auf, dass wir nie bei Merc waren und so auch nicht deren neuen Superflitzer gesehen haben, aber ich sag euch, man hätte ihn eh nicht angucken können. Ich wette da stand so ne Traube von Menschen wie um die Lamborghinis. Von denen hab ich nämlich auch nichts gesehen.
Last but not least. Die Frauen. Egal ob Besucherinnen oder vom Aussteller. Ja aber sowas von gutaussehend. Das ging gar nicht klar. Man war total hin und her gerissen, ob man lieber die Karre oder die Frau fotografieren soll. So geht das nicht

Lustiger  Weise haben mein Kumpel und ich dort noch einen alten Schulkameraden getroffen. Die Chancen, dass das passiert waren wohl verschwindend gering, aber war ne geile Sache ^^

Column: Miami Overhyped

For the last several years, when the University of Miami wins a game, the media proclaims the U is back.

And unfortunately for Hurricanes fans, the U never really is back.

Once again, the media jumped on the Canes bandwagon following Miami’s 33-17 rout of Georgia Tech last Thursday.

Miami quarterback Jacory Harris

Sure, Canes quarterback Jacory Harris was 20-25 with 270 yards passing and threw 3 touchdowns, but the Yellow Jackets’ passing defense ranks 85th in the NCAA.

In Georgia Tech’s first game, they allowed Jacksonville State quarterback Marques Ivory to be 23-38 and throw 193 yards and two touchdowns.

So before crowning Harris as the next Jim Kelly or Vinny Testaverde, gain some perspective.

The first game Harris played this season against Florida State could easily have been a loss for the Canes; however, it quickly turned into a Harris lovefest.

Harris threw two interceptions in the contest, bringing his career total to nine compared with 17 touchdowns. When Harris faces a real defense on Saturday, people will find out just how good he is.

Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster will have his crew ready for the biggest Atlantic Coast Conference game of the year.

Harris has only been sacked once this year and hasn’t faced much pressure from defenses. Expect a lot of blitz packages and pressure from defensive end Jason Worilds. The Hokies will get to the quarterback and force Harris to make bad decisions.

It will then be up to the ball-hawking secondary to make the necessary plays to shutdown Miami’s speedy wide receivers.

There are a few problems, though.

While the defensive gameplan will, without a doubt, be an excellent counter to Miami’s offense, the execution is in question.

The Hokies defense has not performed up to typical lunch pail standards.

Tech is ranked 77^th in total defense. They haven’t been out of the top-10 in that category since 2003.

Pinpointing the problem is nevertheless difficult.

The young linebacking corps? Injuries in the secondary? Defensive line not living up to the billing?

What about the offense? Because of their impotence and consistent three-and-out play, the defense must be on the field for more than half the game. Look back to the Alabama game. When was the last time you saw a Tech defense that worn out at the end of a game?

These are some of the best athletes in the country, and there is no excuse for being that tired with the high-class conditioning that goes on at Tech.

The defense did answer the bell against Nebraska by not allowing a touchdown, and employing a bend-but-

don’t-break mentality.

Miami is not Nebraska, though. The Canes may actually have better athletes the Alabama and Nebraska, so it’s paramount the offense find a rhythm early to keep the defense well-rested.

This game has much bigger implications than the previous three. This one counts. No excuses. With Miami being in the Coastal Division and already boasting a 2-0 record in the ACC, this game could very well decide the Hokies’ ACC title hopes.

The players and coaches know it, though.

“This game might as well be the ACC Championship game,” running back Ryan Williams said. “It’s big for us. It’s real big for us. We have to come out fighting strong from the first quarter through the fourth quarter.”

Coincidentally, Williams grew up a Miami fan, and looked up to previous Canes running backs: Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis and Frank Gore.

Williams has the Miami-type swagger. He showcased it against Nebraska when he did his variation of the “Dirty Bird” touchdown dance—he calls it the “Dirty Hokie.”

Williams redshirted last season and didn’t take part in last year’s 16-14 loss at Miami.

He will be here this time around, in Lane Stadium. The last time the Canes traveled to Blacksburg, the Hokies destroyed them 44-14.

The Canes did take care of the Hokies in 2005, in Lane, 27-7—a game that will hereby be forgotten, but the Hokies are 4-2 against Miami the last six meetings.

Tech knows how to beat the U, and the media has forgotten it. Miami jumped in the rankings from No. 20 to No. 9 in the Associated Press poll this week. With that jump, they leapfrogged No. 11 Tech.

Perhaps someone should notify the authorities the Hokies are three-time ACC champions. Miami has won the ACC championship exactly zero times.

The ACC championship runs through Blacksburg, so don’t sweat the Miami swagger.

Nachdem bekannt wurde, dass es beim Schleswig-Holsteinischen Zeitungsverlag (SHZ) hoffenbar eine interne “Stallorder” gibt, nicht über kleine Parteien wie die Freien Wähler und die Piratenpartei zu berichten, starteten die PIRATEN am gestrigen Abend eine spektakuläre Lichtaktion, um auf diesen undemokratischen Zustand aufmerksam zu machen. Für etwa zwanzig Minuten warfen sie ihr Logo mit einem speziellen Beamer an das SHZ-Gebäude in Rendsburg.

Normally, I would tell y’all to stay aboard the RichRod train.  My only concern is a small letdown against their regional rival… and seeing that I was off in my prediction that regional MI teams are done, I wonder if I miscalculated their potential prowess.  I think MI is a good pick, but I wouldn’t say that I could call them top 2 for the week.

Too Good to Be True

It would seem as though betting on Cal -14 against a sour Minn team is a no brainer.  I think it will be a 28+ point blow out as Tedford really has his team believing.  Our computers pull Cal ahead by 25… but let’s pull the covers off a bit.  Tedford always has a strong start and stumbles against an inferior team on the road.  It always happens.  Has he learned?  Is this too good to be true?

Best Bet

Okay Hokie fans, you get relief this week.  Somehow the line, which is -5.5 on Bodog, has stimied the system.  We have the pick at -11.5, so this should probably be called the Value Bet.  This is a 5* play folks.  Even with Darren Evans out for the year, Beamer has his horses running wild.  Taylor finally showed his legs last week and dropped in some nice passes as well.  Well they better show balance this week.  We knwo the secondary is up for putting an end to Zac Lee’s dream start.  This is a no brainer pick and one of the best bets you’ll see in the first month. Of course, nothing compares with Michigan’s week one, but this is close.

Intriguing Bet

Georgia and Ark.  With a rash of injuries plaguing Georgia and an awful loss vs. OSU, I wonder what Richt is thinking here.  Still, this is Georgia and we all have no idea how good Ark is this year.  We do know they play tough at home, but how do they take advantage of the injured skill players on Georgia?  One thing we know if that Georgia has been tested playing two solid programs and surviving 1-1 with their shiny new QB.  Cox had a good game last week after a forgettable one two weeks ago.  My guess is that UGA starts getting better and Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett shows he had a first good game against junk.  Mallett, if you saw him play at Michigan, wouldn’t beat out Garrett Green at USC (#4 depth chart) and he is a kid who can’t handle pressure.  I think Georgia’s defense will apply pressure on a flower that easily wilts in the sun.  Can’t run  away from the truth, son.  Ryan chokes, the Bulldogs get back on track.  Give up the 2 points.

This just in…. Caleb King will be starting for UGA and all will be well.

So my bets this week are VaTech and UGA.  Take it to the bank and let your bookie feel the strain.  Here’s to going 6-0 folks.

I like the Antibes and JuanLesPins themes from the Beamer class. They use a nice tree-like navigation at the top, which provides a good notion about where exactly the speaker is in her/his talk. This feature is especially important for presentations given in places where attendees don´t care too much about being in time.

Antibes and JuanLesPins use the tree and smoothtree “outer” themes. The problem for me is that they provide a 3-level tree navigation (Title, Section and Subsection), plus the Frame Title. I don´t have subsections in my presentations. Also, I don´t think it´s necessary to have the main title in every single frame (but if you enjoy it, try using one of the nice beamer footer instead, for example the one from Madri theme).

Unfortunately I couldn´t find any beamer theme with Section plus Frame Title only. So, a very simple cleanup in the tree outertheme gave me what I was looking for:

beamerouterthemesingletree.sty

If you want to use this, just set it as the outertheme in your tex. Supposing the file name is beamerouterthemesingletree.sty and it´s located in the same directory as your tex file, add:

\userouthertheme{singletree}

Gisteren een erg leuke nieuwe gadget gevonden. Voor het geven van presentaties is het altijd handig om een beamer in de buurt te hebben. Alleen wie heeft er zin om voor 4 kg aan apparatuur mee te slepen. En dan heb je nog een beamer met weinig resulutie ook. In de Media markt liep ik, per ongeluk want hij lag alleen in het magazijn, tegen een dikke discman formaat beamer aan.

Hij weegt iets meer dan een pond, kan van USB afspelen, heeft 20.000 branduren, behoorlijke resolutie (svga). Voor nog geen 500 euro.

Ik was helemaal blij en de persoon voor wie ik hem kocht nog blijer, want hij past zo goed bij de Aplle…

I put the blog on the backburner after last football season and posted some Collegiate Times articles I wrote. A few things I do want to talk about lately, though.  Shawne Merriman, volleyball, Kenny Chesney and the inept Virginia Tech offense.

Merriman– Bill Cosby once talked about brain damage in his performance “Himself,” in 1983. The brain damage he spoke of was when children need to hear things three times or more to understand. Even then, they will disobey and when you ask why, they reply, “I don’t know!” Here’s a link to a youtube video with the excerpt.

Volleyball– What a pleasant surprise this has been! I got the women’s volleyball beat for the Collegiate Times this semester. I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical of what to expect, but it’s been awesome. The night I found out, I spent three hours researching the rules and watching youtube videos on how to play.

I’m still getting a grip on the abstract rules and how to calculate all the statstics, but watching the games is very exciting. The players can be a bit nervous when I interview them, but I think they will break out of their shell.

One player on the team doesn’t like interviews, and she is deemed off-limits to me. I wonder if she had a bad experience with any previous writers of any kind. She’s a good player too, so it sucks I can’t talk to her.

The team is 6-0 right now, and they are in Washington, D.C. for a tournament this weekend. I think they can win all three games handily if they do well. It is their first road test, so who knows what might happen.

Kenny Chesney– Please. For the life of me I don’t understand why ESPN chooses such crappy theme songs for college football. Chesney and Dave Matthews?! I didn’t know ESPN is a proponent of homoeroticism.

Watching the Georgia Tech-Clemson game tonight, they had another country singer, and I believe he is the “ACC singer.” God help us. How is some dude in a cowboy hat and tank top supposed to get us pumped for a violent, head-smashing sport? I’ve googled the topic and found about a 99% disapproval rate. The other 1% are girls who just say “I love Kenny!” or guys who pop their collars that love Dave Matthews. Disgusting.

I’d really like to get the chance to ask Frank straight up, “Are you satisfied with ACC Championships or do you want more?” We barely win the ACC as it is with Bryan’s pathetic offense, anyway.
