Southbank Centre Artist in Residence and beatboxing boundary-pusher, Shlomo, will deliver the first performance of his new BOXED project with the Vocal Orchestra January 7-8 and we’ve got an exclusive pair of backstage passes. The lucky winners will get a sneaky look at what goes on behind the scenes and of course some money-can’t-buy shmoozing opportunities.

BOXED features the voice boxes of a 10-strong cast performing jaw-dropping vocal routines and tunes spanning the musical spectrum from hip hop to jazz to drum n bass and opera – it’s not to be missed!

“This show will be like beatboxing’s answer to Stomp, Blue Man Group and Into the Hoods.” says Shlomo. “I can’t tell you how excited I am about it!!”

All ticket holders for the Friday 8th January performance will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win the backstage passes for the Purcell Room performance on 8th January 2010.

Here’s a pair of diametrically opposed hacks. One makes use of a real instrument to play Rock

Here’s a pair of diametrically opposed hacks. One makes use of a real instrument to play Rock Band, the other makes use of a game controller to play real music.

[Tim] lets us know that his friend figured out how to play Rock Band 2 on expert level by playing flute instead of singing. Of course this works because the game is just looking for the correct frequency for scoring. It makes sense that the vocal lines can be offset by an octave and still register correctly. We wouldn’t have thought of this ourselves but now that we’ve seen her success, we will try it (our instrumental skills far out pace our singing talents).

Seeing this sparks a correlation with Phone Phreaking, which started with a blind kid singing a tone into the receiver to make the remainder of his long distance call free. This was followed by Blue Boxes that allowed people without perfect pitch to play the tones electronically. It would be interesting to see what could have been done with a talented flute player (like the beat-boxing flutist) and one of those old phone networks.

On the other side of the coin, we have [Jordan's] project in which she creates midi controllers using Wii drums from Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band. The Guitar Hero drums are velocity sensitive, a feature she’s using in her setup. The MIDI data takes into account how hard the drums are struck and the resulting sound reflects that. This particular writeup outlines her use of Osculator for the velocity sensitive system, but you can also check out the tutorial she wrote covering the use of JunXion with the Rock Band controller that we covered in the past.

Video for both of these control schemes is included after the page break. We love to see people break the guise of “I’m creating music by playing a video game” and actually use their musical talents in a new and interesting way.

Hands up everyone who was surprised to see Cleo in the Top 3? Be honest now. Even SHE was caught off guard. And what a Finale hey. Yoh!!

From the get-go George entertained the socks off me. He brought a whole new level to his beatboxing – 5 different sounds at the same time!! He was my favourite to win, and got a well-deserved second place.

But Darren blew us all away with his moves. I don’t know what you call it, but he did it. He even checked his infinity self out behind him and made a little joke about it. And did I detect some suppressed emotion in his translator’s voice? Congratulations Darren! You deserve that R250,000 prize.

Ai Louwtjie. I SO wanted you to be in the top 3. You got some great exposure and I’m sure the scouts spotted you. Did you have something like a rubber thimble on your finger, or… never mind.

Willem and Louis gave me goose bumps! Tried to sing along, but I would have ruined it for Henk next to me.

Wonder boy Kaylon should definitely audition for So You Think You Can Dance when he’s old enough. I loved the Mango Groove music, ‘cause everyone is a special star.

Last act on was Cleo Filander. I can honestly say that I didn’t recognise last night’s song. Judging by the tears in Ian’s eyes she did it justice.

Do you think the contestants get Lunchbar hampers?

In the end, the best act won. All the best for your plan Darren!

Unglaublich!

Unfair for my 2 favs to be in the same semi, but at least both are through to the Final on Thursday.
Congrats George Avakian with your awesome beatboxing, and Louwtjie Rothman, the guitar virtuoso. Louwtjie is also writing exam tomorrow, eish.

All the best to Roses – these guys surprised me with great moves. F.A.I.T.H has a beautiful sultry voice. The kids should go far with their dancing; poor Natasha – I almost cried with you girly.

The Wiyos‘ new CD “Broken Land Bell” actually came out a few months ago, but the band was busy touring this summer so they were unable to have an official release party for the album until last Friday night. Having returned from playing a whirlwind of stadiums opening for a triple feature of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and John Melloncamp, The Wiyos brought the house down at The Gramercy Theatre which hosted the band’s night of celebration. There was a lot of music to be heard, and not just The Wiyos’.

MICHAEL CULMELLA

The first set of music was by Sxip Shirey and Adam Matta. No, scratch that. The very first set of music was during the interesting pre-show, courtesy of DJ Michael Cumella. He’s not your typical DJ, that’s for sure… What Michael spins is 78’s featuring music from 1900-1929 (I believe I heard a bunch of Annette Crenshaw in the mix), which he plays on a gramophone. How cool is that? I’ll tell you one thing, I would be happy to attend any wedding that Michael is DJing. However, if there aren’t any weddings scheduled on your calendar but you still want to hear the vintage goodness, you’re in luck! Michael has a radio show every Tuesday at 7pm on WFMU. It is called “Antique Phonograph Music Program” and can be heard on 91.1 FM in NYC. You can also listen live online, play archives, and sign up for a podcast of the show at www.wfmu.org/playlists/AP. For more information about Michael you can check out his website at www.michaelcumella.com.

ADAM MATTA AND SXIP SHIREY

After that came the music of Sxip Shirey and Adam Matta. Adam is a one-man drum set/sound effect creator/vocal trumpeter extraordinaire. He’s a New Yorker, and by what I gathered from audience’s reaction when he took the stage Adam apparently has quite a devoted following. No surprise why — the guy is impressive. I have wanted to see him for a while now, and was thrilled to finally get the chance. While Adam creates cool effects with voice, so does Sxip Shirey with his ensemble of assorted items which include bells, whistles, flutes, maracas, and a harmonica. Sxip uses microphone effects to achieve some of the sounds he creates, but even still, not everyone can make pan pipes sound like an organ! Sxip is a genius who looks like a mad genius, but then, that might just be the hair… It really is quite fantastic…

After a few songs Adam left the stage and Sxip performed solo for a while, Adam later returning towards the end of the set. Listening to Sxip was like getting a history lesson, comedy show, and concert all rolled into one. He talked about New York City and personal events that have shaped who he is, doing so with the humor of a stand-up comedian. He has a mind of incredible inspiration and appreciates not just musical notes as we know them, but abstract sound. He hears the world differently than everyone else does, and during the show on Friday Sxip explained how his inspiration for a particular song came from an unconventional source: apparently he was in his apartment one night and heard the most beautiful noise he had ever heard, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. Sxip thought he might have dreamt it, but he awoke the next night to the same noise. As it turns out, it was a train rounding a curve in the tracks. Each train car that passed had a different pitch, and all of the cars harmonized with each other to create a symphony of sorts. Only Sxip can hears things that way, and then recreate the auditory experience perceived through his own ears for the audience. He used paper clips on his guitar strings to produce the sound he wanted — I mean, who else would think of doing that? I don’t know how in the world he comes up with some of the unusual uses that he does for random items, but Sxip Shirey is the McGyver of music. When Adam came back out he and Sxip played some more great songs, and seeing the two guys perform together was like witnessing a hip-hop/avant-garde/performance art/technological sound scape/theatrical opera masterpiece.

THE WIYOS

The spotlight was then handed over to The Wiyos, although Sxip and Adam — both of whom are on tracks from “Broken Land Bell” — played with the band for the majority of their set. Seeing Michael Farkas, Parrish Ellis, Joseph “Joebass” Dejarnette, and Teddy Weber with Adam and Sxip was like seeing The Wiyos for the first time, the addition of the latter two musicians giving the music a new spirit. The musicians took the stage one at a time amid shouts of excitement from the crowd, Teddy going first. He proceeded to play an edgy repeating pattern of music, making the anticipation in the room build, and continued playing that as the other musicians stepped onto the stage from the wings. As each musician came on they started to play along, and when everyone was onstage the musicians burst seamlessly into song with “Stomp.” The Wiyos’ set was off and running from there.

The band’s performance was even more theatrical than usual, and was a feast for the eyes and ears alike. The Wiyos had more energy than I’ve ever seen them have, both in their music and movements, and energy is certainly not something the band has ever been lacking in! The Teddy Weber original “All Aboard” had a carribean-esque groove that I hadn’t heard before, and I was in bliss when the musicians played “Tennessee Tango” (which appears on The Wiyos’ first album, “Porcupine”) because I got to hear the song live in all its destined glory, complete with sound effects and embellishments. I’ve never seen The Wiyos in a venue that has rock lighting, as The Gramercy Theatre does, and I have to admit it was a cool experience. The Wiyos aren’t a rock band by any means, but it was exciting to see them on a stage with different colored lights flashing and that only added to the already brimming enthusiasm of the crowd. The Wiyos topped off their marvellous set with an encore, which there wasn’t time for since everything at The Gramercy was kept on a tight schedule, but the crowd persisted. The venue finally consented to the chants of “One more song… One more song…” and The Wiyos delivered a smooth rendition of the classic “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby.”

The farther The Wiyos stray from the path of what is the norm (not that they were actually ever on it), the better they sound. They just keep rising to new levels of artistic brilliance, and I feel they are one of the most note-worthy alternative bands of our time. They play music with deference to old-time tradition, yet infuse their music with a progressiveness and a relatability. Music that the very old, the very young, and everyone in between can enjoy and appreciate. The band has been playing together for six years now and I’m glad to they’re climbing out of general public obscurity, slowly but surely. Where before upon mentioning the band’s name I would get a “Who? How do you spell that? W-I- what? Nah, never heard of them,” I now get a “Yeah, The Wiyos! I’ve heard of them… Who are they?” (Hey, I never said there isn’t room to grow on the part of the ignorant.) Opening for Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and John Melloncamp gave The Wiyos the wide exposure they deserve, and I’m happy to find that new audiences are getting into the band’s music.

LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE

The last band to play was Las Rubias Del Norte, a band based out of Brooklyn whose influence is drawn heavily from the music and rhythms of classical latin music. They’re equal opportunists however, and cover music from as wide a variety of sources as Wolfgang Amadaes Mozart and the opera Carmen to Venezuelan folk songs. Emily Hurst and Allyssa Lamb are the founders and lead vocalists of the band, and are both alumna of the New York Choral Society. Las Rubias Del Norte also includes Taylor Bergren-Chrisman on double bass, Olivier Conan on cuatro and vocals, Giancarlo Vulcano on guitar, and Timothy Quigley and Greg Stare on percussion. The seven piece band played gorgeous music, Emily and Allysa’s voices blending beautifully together and swirling around the audience in a haze much like the smoke effects from the stage did. The percussion section was amazing, and Giancarlo had superb technique on guitar. I unfortunately couldn’t stay for the band’s whole set since I had a dark, rainy two-hour drive upstate ahead of me, but I am really grateful that I got to hear the music of Las Rubias Del Norte that I did. Although my ride home was indeed dark and rainy, I was warm of heart as I basked in the joy I felt from being at the show; a joy that was contributed to by each band and musician.

The sling which mends the broken spirit

Today was interesting.

The next-door neighbor called over and asked if I could take her daughter (marissa, em’s bestest friend) to school when I drove em. That was cool, and we got all ready and then pulled up outside their house – only to realize we’d forgotten em’s medicine!! So we back-up, run back in, take a puff of the medecine, run out, puck up marissa, and safely make it to school. YES!

The oversight on the medcine was a bad one, I thought I had everything down: brush the teeth, eat the breakfast, change the clothes (matching socks and all), get the jacket, get the lunch (and toonie for toonie tuesday!) and agenda into the bag, and out the door with enough time to get to school and play…ah well, perhaps I’ll make a checklist at the door and we can make sure it all gets ticked before we go.

I went to a local health-food store, drank a cappuccino, and read the paper, to kind of “get into the community life”. The lady at the store is friendly, and we’ve met her several times during earlier visits to Lumby. Next I take Jaai-Wen to her school, and she told me she wants to cook tonight, which I was down with, so we agreed to meet at the supermarket at 3pm.

I went to em’s school again at 12 for “sharing”. This is normally where a student brings in an item and talk about why they like it – show and tell…my brilliant sister decided to bring me in for sharing, specifically to talk like kermit the frog. Yes, I can…and yes, I did. I also did a bit of beatboxing, and lent as many cool points as I could to em while I was there. She beamed as she munched down on her toonie-tuesday pizza.

I met Jaai-wen at the supermarket at 3, and we loaded up on some groceries. The best part was that everyone who saw us thought we were a couple, and they gave me dirty looks when she spoke in really broken English! haha, and following a comment i made about having to go to em’s parent teacher interviews, she said “aha, yeah, we are like emily parents!”

HOKAY!!

Then I got em from afterschool playtime, and she dropped a great line on the way back – we see a man and lady walking their dogs:

em: “ash that man is form my shcool”

me : “Em, what does he do?”

em: “He’s an officer.”

me: ” a policeman?”

em: “no, like a man that works in the office. Maybe a teacher or something”

brilliant.

This was soon followed by us having a pillow fight on the bed (with the dog attacking us as well)…until the dog’s paw came down heavy on em’s arm and scratched her. She had a little cry and really wanted a band-aid, but I told her they would do no good. She insisted on having something wrapped around it, so I suggested the best thing would be my scarf (which I stole from Karim). She enthusiastically agreed. Overall the scarf-sling was a great success. However, she tried to capitalize on my pity by saying that watching harry potter number 3 would make her feel better too. Mmm, wasn’t buying it.

I’m am now in the process of trying to convince her that cleaning is good and doesn’t have to be boring. I am, of course, making all fun activities conditional on the room being clean, but also on her being happy about cleaning. I wonder how long it will take to organize her room?

Things from the past few days…

1. Audrey II, the cute and totally harmless plant I bought for a dollar, about which only two things are known.

It is “some kind of succulent.”

It seems to be “pretty much indestructible.”

Yeah, it basically appeared at the plant sale during a total solar eclipse and they had no idea what it was…

2. First classes. So good. So. Good.

3. Most of the food here, including gelato at the WCMA (in minuscule portions), brunch night (breakfast food for dinner), knock-you-nakeds (HEAVEN ON EARTH), and kids’ night (delicious comfort food of the typical American childhood; the mac and cheese was the shit). And entry snacks are tonight, woo!

4. Pedro beatboxing in front of the entire freshman class at the jamboree, completely without prior knowledge or preparation. And let me say, utterly without sarcasm: I am honored to be in the same entry as such a talented beatboxer.

5. Tag sales! Found an essentially new copy of The History of Love for 50 cents. And I’d almost bought one at Barnes and Nobles for like 12 dollars. Suddenly I feel $11.50 richer. Score.

6. Figuring out how to print from my laptop to the college’s printers. Which will come in handy once I start actually doing work. Hello, first full week of the school year…

Thanks to all the reality shows hitting the Television like a storm as a result every single channel

Thanks to all the reality shows hitting the Television like a storm as a result every single channel on-air has a reality show of its own. Among all these everyday reality shows there is one called “MTV ROCK ON”. The Show is about the nation wide hunt for the ROCK BAND with the DESI(Indian) touch. The show is something really different and the talent is a treat to watch. I really like watching this show and the best part is its increasing my knowledge about the music. The judges are great, singer Kailash Kher is a genius; my reaction to his talent is just “WOW”. Ram Sampat is a great mentor and VJ Nikhil Chinnappa is an awesome entertainer.

Seriously, for the first time I felt that MTV has come up with a show, which is with sheer class. Otherwise, the shows are more or less concentrated on one single thing i.e. negative marketing, which includes politics, cat fights, controversies etc etc. Well this was about the show, which I really did not want to emphasize on because MTV is not paying me for itJ. But I certainly don’t want to take away the credit from the show as this has introduced me to a new kind of music, which I thought was never existed. Ok lets not create suspense here, I m talking about the BEAT BOX MUSIC.

What is a BEAT BOX? I m sure if you are an Indian you might be really scratching your head just now. Well even I did not know “what is a BEAT BOX?” before I watched a guy performing on this very own desi Rock Band show. Technically, BEAT BOXING is vocal imitation of various instruments by a human being and to my surprise as per sources on the internet- this form of music was originated in India several thousand years ago through the tradition of bol(It is used in Indian music to define the tala, or rhythmic pattern, and is one of the most important parts of Indian rhythm) but unfortunately, even though people do practice this art of music they still don’t know that this is classified as separate main stream music called BEAT BOXING. As a result, it’s not practiced by any musician in the country as one’s primary music talent.

BEAT BOXES are human musical instruments and it involves them to produce beats, rhythms and musical sounds from one’s mouth primarily. It may also involve the imitation of singing, vocal simulations and imitations of other things present around us, it could be a sound of horn or sound of birds flying away or anything. This art has no limits or boundaries. It’s about how creative you can be and how many different sounds you can generate to make nice music.

Mostly, DJ’s are the one who primarily consist of the BEAT BOXES major population across the globe. DJ’s are good at simulating the same sounds, which they are able to do with their DJ-ing musical instruments, the sound mixers and the remixes, and that adds to their talent. The Hip-Hop origin of BEAT BOXES is expected to be happened in 1980’s and for records it’s believed that Doug E. Fresh was the first self proclaimed “HUMAN BEAT BOX”. The term “beat-boxing” is derived from the mimicry of the first generation of drum machines, then known as Beat Boxes.

It’s a fact that the legendry pop star Micheal Jackson who started to add his own sounds to his music in his famous songs “Cry” and “Who is it” did beat-boxing. In 2005 the world championship of beatboxing was organised in Leipzig, Germany and Joel Turner of Australia won the world championship. Few of the famous artists who are making efforts to make this world popular all across the globe are- Rahzel, Kenny Muhammad, and Matisyahu, and they have an official website- http://www.humanbeatbox.com. The BEAT BOXING as a music a vastly popular in Europe and America but in Asia, it is still in very initial stage of converting to a main stream music. Though it is supposed to be originated in India but its never been recognized as a major main stream music.

I hope the BEAT-BOXING becomes more famous because creativity has no limits and I want to enjoy it to the fullest.
