Se você curte a geração beat, ou tem um mínimo interesse pela turba de poetas e escritores viajantes e marginais, deve ter percebido que faltava um livro no mercado que sistematizasse a jogada toda, contextualizando e indicando outras leituras. Faltava. Agora, felizmente é fácil encontrar nas livrarias o título Geração Beat, de Claudio Willer, pequena pedrada-pocket da coleção encyclopaedia da editora L&PM.

Willer é um grande estudioso do assunto, e já verteu para o português vários  poemas de Allen Ginsberg, sempre com riqueza de notas explicativas e textos adicionais. Em “Geração Beat”, ele revela um texto impecavelmente conciso e organizado, e muito agradável de ler – as linhas simplesmente se desmancham frente aos nossos olhos e lá estamos nós ao lado de Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac e William Burroughs.

Longe de ser um tratado sobre o assunto, este é um livro introdutório para quem começa  a se aventurar nesta imensa praia de girassóis, assim como presta uma louvável função de discutir e organizar um pouco dessa  loucura toda para aqueles que já a apreciam. Mais dois outros méritos do título são: a preocupação de Willer em trazer nomes que se ligam de alguma forma ao movimento aqui no Brasil e na América Latina – há inclusive um capítulo que trata apenas de como se difundiu a beat no Brasil, e a discussão de como estes tortos caminhos percorridos por esta geração iriam desmbocar na contracultura.

Se llama Hippie o Jipi a un movimiento contracultural nacido en los años 60 en Estados Unidos, así como también a los seguidores de dicho movimiento. La palabra hippie deriva del inglés hipster que solía usarse para describir a la subcultura previa de los beatniks (no confundir con Generación Beat), que también tuvo como base importante a la ciudad estadounidense de San Francisco (California) y su distrito Haight-Ashbury. Esta nueva subcultura heredó algunos valores contraculturales de la Generación Beat y en menor grado del naturismo alemán, y en determinados casos crearon sus propias comunidades intencionales.

Escuchaban rock psicodélico y folk contestatario, abrazaban la revolución sexual y creían en el amor libre. Algunos participaron en activismo radical y en el uso de drogas como la marihuana, el LSD y otros alucinógenos con la intención de alcanzar estados alterados de conciencia, en realidad una forma de rebelarse por la homogeneidad de conceptos que ofrece el Sistema. También buscaron formas de experiencia poco usuales, como la meditación. Debido a su rechazo al consumismo solían optar por la simplicidad voluntaria, ya sea por motivaciones hedonistas, espirituales-religiosas, artísticas, políticas, o ecologistas.

Here’s your friendly reminder that MySpace Music, Socialight & Digiwaxx are presenting Ghostface Killah live tonight at Hiro Ballroom NYC alongside production duo Beatnick & K-Salaam.

Doors open at 8 PM, but since this is a free show I’d recommend showing up crazy early. William Cooper and I will be in the building promoting Beware of the Pale Horse so come say what’s up if you see us out there. Dallas Penn might be joining us as well.

Ghost will be promoting his latest effort Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City while Beatnick & K-Salaam should be rocking songs from their fly remix album Never Can Say Goodbye featuring reinterpretations of classics from Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

In their latest project, Beatnick & K-Salaam took three of the kings of Mo-Town, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and remixed some of their most famous songs.  These new remixes all still have a nice funk/soulful feel to it which make them ALL very enjoyable to listen to and seriously very nice to just put on and chill to.  Very solid CD that I’m sure you will like.

Mas eu tinha minhas próprias idéias e elas não tinham nada a ver com a parte “lunática” de tudo aquilo. Eu queria comprar um equipamento completo com tudo que é preciso para dormir, abrigar-se, comer, cozinhar, na verdade uma cozinha e um quarto completos bem nas minhas costas…

…e partir para algum lugar e encontrar a solidão perfeita e olhar para o perfeito vazio da minha mente e ser completamente neutro em relação a qualquer e toda idéia.

Pretendo rezar, também, como minha única atividade, rezar por todas as criaturas vivas; percebi que essa era a única atividade decente que sobrara no mundo.

Estar no leito de um rio em algum lugar, ou no deserto, ou nas montanhas, ou em alguma cabana do México ou em um barraco em Adirondack, e descansar e ser gentil, e não fazer nada além disso, praticar o que os chineses chamam de “não fazer nada”.

You received the leaks MONTHS ago.  And yes, you were blown away.  And yes, like yourself, I wondered, ‘When the EFF is this ISH comin out?!” Well dammit, it’s arrived and it’s oh so sweet.  Featuring remixes of MJ, Marvin and Stevie, Beatnick & K-Salaam have without a shadow of a doubt proved that they are, in fact a problem.  For REALS for real.

Couldn’t tell you what’s goin on here, but I can tell you I’m thoroughly intrigued.  These 2 working together should definitely generate goodies.

Pharrell & Mr. Oizo are Eric Williams?

GRANDMASTER ROC RAIDA

Finally, on September 19th, the world lost a true innovator, inspiration and phenom to the art of turntablism. Anthony Williams a.k.a. Grandmaster Roc Raida passed away last week due to complications from a surgery he had to undergo after a mixed-martial arts accident.

Without question, not only one of the most influential people in the Turntablist community, but also one of the main reasons I began to pursue music in the first place.  I literally wore out my X-Pressions CD in Grade 10 to the point where out of the 20 some cuts, I could only eventually play 5 or 6 cause the rest of the disc was burnt out.   In Saskatoon, where I grew up, we had a Skate/Hip-Hop shop called 9Times that used to get bootleg copies of underground Hip-Hop VHS tapes.  That’s where I got Tableturns 2. That’s when I first saw the Push It/Goin Back to Cali routines and that’s when I realized that Roc Raida ain’t no joke.  And well, that’s also where I got ‘the Adventures of Grandmaster Roc Raida’ and was really shown just how much of an impact he had on the Hip-Hop world.

Below I’ve included clips of the Tableturns 2 routine, one of my favorite clips from ‘the Adventures of…’ where Raida has a friendly battle with D.I.T.C. legend, Lord Finesse, and ‘Raida’s Theme’ from X-Pressions.

One of the best to ever do it.

R.I.P. Roc Raida.
