Do this exercise: go to Trackitdown.net, click ‘House’, go to the ‘New Releases’ tab and select ‘Electro’ in the Genre drop down menu. Finally, choose ‘Last Two Weeks’ under time period. What do you see? More than 40 pages of new music? 879 tracks! And that’s just the Electro section. So even if you know what kind of music you’re looking for, good luck getting to that gem on page 8 buddy. More often than not, you’re going right to the ‘Featured Tracks’ section, and why wouldn’t you? You wanna funk, and if the Nice Man on Trackitdown is telling you what to rip and what to skip, why thank you Mr. Man. Here’s me credit card number…

But what about song 433 on page 12? And what about all those labels and all those artists putting out song after song on sites like Beatport and TID, only to get lost in the monstrous deluge of never ending new releases? Who are these artists and labels, and what is their goal? Vanity projects? Most certainly some, but not all. Its so hard to get on a Beatport or a Juno, that for a lot of labels the opportunity to sell their music alongside the Skints and the Get Physicals of the world is accomplishment enough. But where to after that?

As the owner of a feisty Internet label, I am well aware of the futility of the digital promotion game. That’s why I don’t release a track a day; you simply can’t do justice to each single in terms of promotion and sales. Why put out a beloved tune only for it to get sucked into the vortex of the interwebs?

Remember when all this music was supposed to be a good thing, and how the MP3 was forever going to revolutionize and democratize music? The little label was finally going to have a voice. What happened? Thousands of tracks released each month, only to disappear into the ether. Revolution? Bollocks.

I wish it was 1993 again. In ‘93, if you were making tracks, you were releasing tracks, and if you were releasing tracks, there was a good chance people were buying ‘em. Revolution? My arse…

How long did it take for the majors to realize that they had to get in on this sweet deal and make it ‘business as usual’ before long? Revolution? F@$k off!

When I first heard them in 2008, I immediately wanted to book them for shows over here in Sweden. So we did, but due to an accident on their way to the airport they had to cancel.

But they got back in the saddle and the rest is history, they are working with the electro maffia all around the world . LAZRTAG, Sharkslayer and Crookers is just a few to mention.

Not only are they a great band, they are also great designers with a line released earlier together with H&M!

A couple of months ago I decided to try out Last.fm. After the short trial period, I quickly decided to make my account permanent, and start the paying service at 3 EUR / month. So far I have been very happy and satisfied with Last.fm. If you do not find your choice in the categories, you have a problem, or very, very, very specific tastes.

And the more I use the service, it got me thinking on my future music consumption. With so many services around that stream music, there has to be enough out there to satisfy any music need(s). On top of Last.fm, I can think of Pandora, Spotify, Tunify and there are many more.

So, what if I never buy music anymore? No more CD’s, no more iTunes, Beatport, Stompy or Traxsource downloads? Can it be done?

Let’s look at the places and moments when I listen to music:

• Work: that is easy. I have a home office (iMac) and when I travel for Sun, I have my laptop with me at all times.
• Vacation: can be a bit more difficult. Most hotels will have internet available, but unfortunately not yet for free. And most of the time quite expensive.
• Travel: as with hotels, most airports will have wi-fi. And increasingly the same applies for airplanes. And even if not possible, I always will have my iPod with me, which has enough music for several long-haul flights. Just the battery will not last.
• Car: usually I listen to regular radio. But apparently the 4G-connected car is around the corner, so picking up my Last.fm stream will soon be possible whilst driving as well.

Conclusion? It seems possible to never purchase music anymore, but use one (or more than one) of the various streaming services available.

Pink A Pads are a duo of two young Italian producers, Andrea Barbara and Manuel Goletto. Originally breaks and drum & bass producers, the duo have had releases out previously on Dirty Drop, VIM and Hypotron. They’re now with Ground Level.

Teggno Records did it again! This has got to be one of their best EPs to date. 4 quality tunes, all great in their own way, it is very hard to place your finger on one that stands out the most. This is my first EP in a while where I have purchased all tracks at once and am blown away. The contributors are some of the familiar names to our loyal readers; Chris Rusu, Kotov & Wilde, Justin James and Nick Cenik. Support the music.

My first post as a contributing music editor for the NYC nightlife blog Frequency outlines the rise in popularity of remix contests offered by such artists as Radiohead, Depeche Mode and Passion Pit. I attributed this to a growing acceptance of artists in embracing nontraditional means of promotion amidst the social media revolution.

Since the first Betamorphosis compilation was released over 6 months ago, a lot has changed for this stateside Dubstep label. After a brief glance at this latest instalment of their signature compilation, it appears that Betamorph are now definitely in a position to show off: the track listing reads somewhere between a police identity parade and a full on alien circus. Betamorphosis Volume Three is a cavalcade of sonorous and dirty subterranean sci-fi.

The compilation is bookended by legends: We open to a sly combination of melody and pressure in ‘Tension’, courtesy of Orien, already legendary from the Dub Police and Poizend Audio. Later, the truly epic finale is orchestrated by Sam XL and DZ through the pure white-knuckle friction of ‘Munch’. Centre stage however is shared by the up and coming Magenta with ‘Transformed’. This symbolic heart of the release features unapologetic kinesis interspersed with lucid dream vocals.

As well as selections from artists currently dominating the scene, the spotlight is also on remixes by Betamorph veterans. The face-melting Ruckus & Roke remix of Mark Instinct’s Sketchy Maxx is a club favourite, and guarding its back are two versions of the more choreographed Richie August tracks: Metaphase’s pulsating version of ‘Hard Step’ and ABZ’s perverse rendition of ‘Dirty Waltz’. The compilation’s chemistry between scene giants and newcomers is ample proof that Betamorph strives to birth new fables, as well as simultaneously being able to handle the Dubstep almighty.

Betamorph has garnered attention for the extraterrestrial imagery associated with each release, and Betamorphosis Volume Three confirms that it is not only a metaphorical trajectory of the label’s goals, but also a signifier of the keen atmospherics that have won their releases such praise in the scene. A full range of soundscapes are here to be absorbed, from Wascal’s playful bandit orchestrations, to Xian1’s curiously aloof apocalypse reggae and the unique swamp styled beats of Organikismness’ slippery ‘Hybrid’. The bass corrupting assortment on here is a credit to the innovative catalogue that Betamorph is devoted to building.

The theme of these compilations is growth and transformation, but rather than the gradual evolution shown on previous releases, this one highlights Betamorph’s final transmutation into one of the most prominent and respected purveyors of equally fine, equally intergalactic Dubstep. The tunes on here are a twisted alchemy of everything Betamorph has already accomplished, as well as an authoritative promise of what is coming soon.
