Uma boa música tem que unir letra e melodia, sem excessão. Se a letra vier em francês, as chances de ser mais poética se multiplicam.

Beatrice Martin, uma cadanense de Quebec, escolheu o nome Coeur de pirate para se apresentar. A voz fina pode ser um pouco irritante, mas combina perfeitamente com o indie pop que ela faz. Por favor, escutem-a sem o preconceito que “pop” possa trazer a sua mente. Beatrice sabe misturar músicas “felizes” do pop com outras um pouco mais trabalhadas, possível resultado dos seus anos de estudo de piano clássico.

- Muitas músicas do CD poderiam estar em trilhas de filme de suspense.

- As primeiras notas de Le Long du Large se parecem com a música da abertura de Fringe.

Beatrice começou a tocar piano aos 3. Com 14 largou o conservatório onde tinha aulas de piano clássico. Postou algumas de suas músicas no MySpace. Impressionados com o que ouviram, os integrante da banda Bonjour Brumaire (também canadenses, também de Quebéc, também na moda) a convidaram para ser a pianista do grupo. Menos de um ano depois Beatrice passou a usar Coeur de Pirate como seu nome artístico.

A fama veio depois que o fotógrafo Francis Vachon postou um vídeo de seus filho brincando e, para a sorte de Beatrice, com a música Ensemble como trilha sonora. O sucesso do vídeo foi tanto, que o programa americano Good Morning America fez um quadro sobre ele. Mais publicidade para a música da garota de apenas 19 anos. Não fosse sufeciente, o blogueiro Perez Hilton deu o últimato: “We have no idea what she is saying, but this is lovely!” (algo do tipo: A gente não faz ideia do que ela está falando, mais é lindo!”).

O álbum, lançado em 2008, está indo “muito bem, obrigado” em Quebec. A língua que a moça escolheu para cantar pode dificultar sua entrada no EUA, mas já lhe rendeu indicações a prêmios respeitáveis no Canadá, como o Juno (não, não tem nada a ver com o filme), e um contrato com uma gravadora francesa. A última da moça é o projeto Pearls. Já dá para perceber que ela sofre de um tipo de múltipla personalidade musical. Em cada projeto quem ganha um novo nome é ela.

Enfim, Coeur de Pirate foi eleita a trilha sonora dos meus planos de viagem à Europa.

Béatrice Martin. 20 anos, canadense. Mas ao contrário da maioria de suas compatriotas famosas (Celine, Shania, Avril, só citei gente boa!), e como boa québecoise, ela canta em francês.

Pra quem não resiste a uma boa música em francês, Coeur de Pirate é o projeto solo de Béatrice. Juntamente com seu piano, fiel escudeiro desde seus 3 anos de idade, ela faz músicas muito fofas, umas bem felizes que trazem um pouco mais de brilho pra um dia sem graça a.k.a. hoje. Muita gente diz por ai que o 1º cd da moça é  o “álbum mais fofo de 2008/09″

O primeiro single do álbum homônimo foi Comme des Enfants.

A minha música preferida, de hoje, é C’était salement romantique.

“Marie, tu devrais faire un blogue…!” disait mon chum. Oh! S’il l’avait dit une fois ou deux fois, ce projet n’aurait jamais vu le jour.  Mais après l’avoir proposé au moins 30 fois, j’ai fini par cèder.

“Qu’est-ce que je ferais d’un blogue??” lui demande ai-je?

” Tous tes trucs de prof sur lesquels tu travailles; tous les bons coups à faire pour les mamans; ce genre de trucs…!”

Un blogue??? Pourquoi pas!
Mais… quel nom aura-t-il???

Quelque chose qui représente qui je suis. Une maman, une enseignante, une femme qui a peur de la trentaine…! Après bien des idées (dont plusieurs farfelues), c’est en coupant une pomme que j’ai eu l’idée de: COEUR DE POMME.

En hommage à la passion de Béatrice Martin (Coeur de Pirate), en l’honneur de l’emblème des écoles (la pomme), j’ai trouvé que ce nom serait parfait pour mon blogue.

Donc, à tous, bienvenue au Coeur de Pomme.

I know Regina Spektor’s new album, Far, has been out a week now and I still have yet to pick up a copy, but a few minutes ago I fell across Béatrice Martin, a 20 year-old from Quebec who performs under the stage name Coeur De Pirate, that just gave me a real Spektor fix, albeit in French! Earlier this year she was nominated for all sorts of awards at Canada’s Juno Awards for her self-titled debut and topped the Canadian charts for weeks with this song. Head over to her MySpace page (also in French) and check out some more of her songs…1.6 million others have already done so!

Beatrice Martin has had an interesting year. The Qubecois bombshell has recieved virtual universal acclaim for her musical alter ego ‘Coeur De Pirate’, recieving positive write-ups from the likes of the infamously vitriolic Perez Hilton and the music press for her delicate piano-pop songs.

She’s back with a new English language side-project called ‘Pearls’. Right now, there is only one grainy demo on her Myspace page, but despite its rawness, it did have me listening to it on repeat. The song can be listened to here.

Coeur de Pirate é na verdade o nome artístico de Béatrice Martin, uma canadense com pouco mais de 20 anos de idade e dotada de puro talento musical e uma doce voz, que fica mais linda ainda ao cantar suas canções em um francês perfeito. Desde quando era pequena já tocava piano por influência dos pais e aos 5 já estava compondo suas próprias canções e na adolescência, se cobrindo de tatuagens e aplausos da critica, devido a seu trabalho como música e pianista profissional. Béatrice já foi integrante de outros grupos como o Bonjour Brumaire, mas ele abandonou todos os seus projetos para se dedicar inteiramente ao Coeur de Pirate. Engraçado que tem gente que compara ela com a Mallu Magalhães, rs. Tipo coisa nada haver! A Béatrice é mil vezes melhor na minha opinião.

Je fais une pause dans ma jolie série de blogs (mais ne vous inquiétez pas, ça revient Vendredi) pour vous parler d’un coup de coeur que j’ai eu en avril pour une très jolie québécoise du doux pseudonyme de Coeur de Pirate…

Alors, Coeur de Pirate, c’est qui?

C’est une jeune femme, de presque 20 ans, au visage d’ange, qui répond au nom de Béatrice Martin. En 2008, elle annonce qu’elle quitte le groupe “Bonjour brumaire” pour se concentrer sur son projet, Coeur de Pirate. Elle se fait très vite connaître via son Myspace et Youtube, et c’est en automne que son album sort au Québec, album aux textes riches en émotions, accompagné de son piano, où elle nous offre de sublime mélodies.
En France, elle est prise sous l’aile de Julien Doré (avec qui elle enregistre un duo) et il en profite pour lui faire un peu de pub.

J’ai eu la chance d’aller la voir à la Boule Noire le 16 mai dernier, où elle nous a offert un concert magique et nous subjugue par son charme ravageur. Elle est très à l’aise avec le public, nous parle, nous raconte ses chansons, les contextes, et arrive à se détacher de ses versions albums et nous offre des morceaux lives magiques. Et pour ceux que ça intéresse, elle revient le 6 octobre à la Cigale (et c’est pas cher)

Not to say I told you so to anyone or to brag on my awesome musical taste, but one of my favorite Canadians is gaining popularity   This charming and emotive singer-songwriter-pianist, hailing from Montreal, was featured on Perez Hilton’s blog [four months ago, sure, but when did I ever say I followed Perez Hilton?]  He notes the song Comme des Enfants, a classic for sure, and admits he has no idea what she’s saying.

I have to agree with him here; though her music is in French, Beatrice Martin is able to capture emotions that need not be translated.  The desperation but simultaneous hope portrayed in Francis, the quirky and energetic Ensemble – even if her words were to mean nothing at all, she recreates emotions perfectly through her music.

I originally discovered her from Aurgasm and have been listening to her since about November of last year, so it’s great to see her recognized – maybe just not by Perez Hilton, please!

Last night was a fun night at Zaphods for this show.
It was the Quebec singer sensation named Coeur de pirate.
She is creating alot of buzz with her style of francophone pop piano music.

Let’s say the majority of the crowds was about 80% French and 20% English.
Since we all know that Quebec has a big support system with their talent.

It was a really packed show but a really well behaved crowd.

The opener was Marie-Josee Houle from Ottawa.
She is a jazz-folk singer.
Mostly her on stage and she played the accordion.
Her music was nice and wonderful.
I was surprised she sang a Wendy McNeill cover “Such A Common Bird”.
What a talented singer.

Surprised the owner of Zaphods came up on stage and gave a small introduction about him, the scene in Ottawa and bringing in alot of good talent from different genres.
Also plug another show in a few weeks with another French band called Tricot Machine.

Then the lovely Coeur de Pirate (aka Béatrice Martin) came on stage with a nice black dress.
Sang mostly from her debut album.
Just her and her keyboard, so no backing band.
Nice that an artist like her would speak english and french.
I didn’t get any of the stuff she said in French.
Great interaction with the audience.
At least she can command/control the show.
When she sang C’etait Salement Romantique she told everyone to be quiet and you could just hear the vents.
The song is a break-up song.
After that was Ensemble which was another break-up song and told the audience that her ex heard the song on a TV ad.
Comme Des Enfants was the second last song and everyone in the audience sang out loud.
That was the only song I sort of know since has been played on CBC Radio 3.

The encore she sang a cover of Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl.
Surprised by it and she totally made it her version just with the keyboard.

Overall it was a great show.

Avec l’arrivée en salle demain du film Cadavres, la reine des recherches aboutissants sur ce blog n’est plus Béatrice Martin nue :

In my multi-day Valentine blitz, I decided to revert to my Grade 3 self and distribute a few anonymous Valentine cards around the neighbourhood.

I picked up a few simple cards at the dollar store, wrote “Have a lovely Valentine’s Day” inside and slipped them into several random mailboxes on my walk today.

If anyone was peeking through their curtains and thinks I’m a not-so-secret admirer, I could be in big trouble….

All I Did Was Smile

One day I was going home and jumped on the LRT (train). There was one seat compartment that was empty except for a run down looking man obviously coming down off of something. Although there were two empty seats across from him, and one beside him, and the train was jam packed, no one would sit there.

Me, being me, waltzed into the train car, sat directly across from him, looked him in the eye and smiled. The look of shock, shame and amazement on his face is a look I will never forget.

He was obviously shocked that someone would sit across from him when a train full of people had done their best to avoid him so far. After he got over the shock, you could see the shame on his face, and you knew it was because of his appearance and how his problems, addictions, whatever they were, were so obvious.

I figured this because immediately after the shock he kinda straightened his posture and slicked his hair down and made an attempt at a subtle ‘clean-up’ of his appearance. He never said anything, he never tried to get closer. All he did after trying to clean himself up was stare out the window and occasionally look at me with a baffled smile.

When we arrived at his stop (I had one more to go) he stood while averting his eyes, then, right before going out the door, he put on this great big sincere smile and said ‘have a good day!’ as well as he could through his hazed slurring. Just the look on his face and that smile are things I will never ever forget. All I did was smile and that was the reaction got, it was amazing.
