BPM: 112
Writer: Mikky Ekko Justin Parker
Producer: Mikky Ekko · Kuk Harrell, Elof Loelv, Justin Parker

Another exceptional track from the songstress, Rihanna. A very tender and gentle ballad. It’s always very healthy to take risks and do something different for a change. Rihanna’s had A LOT of hits, but this is her first true ballad. It really showcases her compelling vocal talent.

Beat – Piano ballads always do an effective job of expressing themes of love. This is a pretty straightforward intro verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus structure. Sometimes less is more. Always pay attention to the contrast of the verse and the chorus. When she sings the melody for the word “stay” Rihanna really delivers that line like she means it. The white noise effect is used really well towards the last few seconds of the song.

Lyrics – The song starts out by comparing love to a fever. That’s keeping it real. The lyrics do a great job of conveying how Rihanna can’t get over her love. Also, pay attention to how conversational the lyrics of the hook are. She can’t explain what it is about her lover, and she can’t control it. I like how both Rihanna and Mikky’s verses end the same way.

SongWriting Exercise: With nothing but a piano, take some lyrics about a lost love and write about it.

After almost a year of traveling I have finally made my way back to the my Home, a.k.a. the Best Cit

After almost a year of traveling I have finally made my way back to the my Home, a.k.a. the Best City in the WOOOOOOORLD, a.k.a Montréal! Just am in slight recuperation from DC’s astounding Forward Festival that happened from May 15th to 19th that y’all should check out! If you’re a fan of Mutek, heady amazing electronic music, and an awesome creative community…you’ll be a fan of Forward! Hopefully I’ll have time to do a recap of it soon enough.

Anyways, the clouds are parting the and roads are a bit sleek from the rain but the festival season has begun and what a way to kick off the summer with the 14th edition of Mutek! In my opinion, Canada’s most prestigious electronic creative culture and music festival and North America’s truest example of electronic creative expression.

In this preview I’ll be highlighting what I’m SUPER excited for (Part 1)!
I’ll also be highlighting artists that I’m STILL REALLY excited about (Part 2)!

Skip to the next page to read all about who you’ll regret missing! Jajaja

Mutek brings in mainstream-difficult artists to expand and re/define genres, art installations and projects, workshops and panels, and tons of FREE events for growing non/local artists. Yup. This already sounds awesome.

First off, let me just say that ALL of the A/Visions series are WORTH going to. Last year I wasn’t able to procure any press passes for the series but the year before I was, and the performances still stick so clearly in my mind today. For me, the A/Visions series is truly what sets Mutek Montreal apart from the other electronic digital arts and music festivals that have most or some of what I listed above.

The Audio Visual series of Mutek is an innovative expression of art and sound working together, depending on each other, to create something truly unique and awesome. It can be music. It can be noise. It can be a bunch of printers and computers synced to a concisely written program for timed tasks. It is an experience that you won’t get with a DJ and projections. It is a showcase of real creativity and intention of molding both aspects. A/Visions is showcased in a beaaautiful theatre (Monument National). No standing. Sitting down in comfortable seats as if you’re about to experience a ballet or a symphony. The acoustics in this place are phenomenal! Check out my other videos of A/Visions series three years ago to give a slight idea!

Who I Am Excited For:

1. Nosaj Thing > June 1st: Nocturne 4 @ le S.A.T.; 00h00-01h35

Born as Jason Chung, this L.A. native was inspired at an early age by the hip hop radio stations his elementary school bus driver would play (dank driver, yo!). Already having a taste for bass, hip hop beats, and drum and bass through parties he frequented, he figured out how to use his dad’s PC to program some tunes and moved into the more experimental beat making scene. Eventually he hooked up with the Low End Theory cats (Flying Lotus/Brainfeeder crew) and debuted as Nosaj Thing in 2004. He’s released a bunch of remixes, one studio EP, Views/Octopus (2004), and two studio LPs Drift (2009) and Home (2013). His latter album is one of my favorite LPs of the year (Drift is a close second) and has been on constant repeat. The production is incredible and is the most accessible album to listen to. Beautiful ethereal landscapes are painted through his use of synths and vocals. Listen to the mix and tracks below to get an idea of his style!

2. Andy Stott > May 30th: Nocturne 2 @ le S.A.T. 23h45-00h50

Stott comes from Manchester, UK and made his first debut back in 2005 off the Modern Love label. He first caught my attention with his second most recent LP, Passed Me By (2011). He really put himself on the books for me with his most recent release Luxury Problems (2012) which was one of my favorite albums of last year. The latter is very similar to Passed Me By except it’s less difficult for those not exposed to this type of sound. Stott’s style is super minimal, dark, and intelligent techno. It’s the kind of album I put on to really travel deep into space and leave to go somewhere intergalactic and foreign. Deep bass-lines, timed distortions, and eerie soundbites paint a landscape we wouldn’t otherwise chase after ourselves, but once we’re there, our curiosity for what lies next overcomes. I’ve even done a few yoga classes to this latter album! I appreciate his style and artists of this nature presenting themselves at music festivals where the mainstream generally wins over with the same formula and accessibility. Stott is definitely more of a left-field artist and I see him more fitting to do something with A/Visions. It’ll be interesting to see how this set turns out!

This Barcelona native made his break through after releasing his debut track “My Old School” on the renowned Permanent Vacation label and “Sunshine” off of his own Hivern Disc label shortly after. I really caught onto him after his first debut LP release last year, fin. I love this album because of the deep bass lines and catchy two steppin’ beats of goooood house music. This album isn’t a good representation of the diversity that he brings though. Similar to his hometown, where art, culture, music are as diverse and connected as the stars are, so is his taste, reflected in the mixes he does. Funk, garage, pop, synth, disco and house of all kinds are mixed seamlessly. Kinda like a Jamie XX, El_Txef_A (another Spaniard), or Nicolas Jaar mix…it’s a box of chocolates for real and you’re gonna enjoy eating them all!

In terms of a house/dance set. Talabot’s set is what I’m most excited for. I can’t wait to get my house dancin’ on! Check out his mixes below…fantastiiiic!

click above to go to archive. an amazing resource. the site archive.org that hosts it is also an amazing resource. enjoy.

Description from site:

The Naropa University Archive Project is preserving and providing access to over 5000 hours of recordings made at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. The library was developed under the auspices of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics (the university’s Department of Writing and Poetics) founded in 1974 by poets Anne Waldman and Allen Ginsberg. It contains readings, lectures, performances, seminars, panels and workshops conducted at Naropa by many of the leading figures of the U.S.literary avant-garde.

The collection represents several generations of artists who have contributed to aesthetic and cultural change in the postmodern era. The Naropa University Archive Project seeks to enhance appreciation and understanding of post-World War II American literature and its role in social change, cultural criticism, and the literary arts through widespread dissemination of the actual voices of the poets and writers of this period. Current interest in Oriental religions, environmentalism, political activism, ethnic studies, and women’s consciousness is directly indebted to the work of these New American Poets, writers and musicians.

Funding for this project was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Save America’s Treasures, the GRAMMY Foundation, the Internet Archive, the Collaborative Digitization Program, and private donors. If this collection is important to you please help us preserve it with your donations.

Yesterday (May, 22, 2013) Morocco rapper French Montana released his debut album Excuse My French. There are 13 tracks total featured on the album. All but two tracks have guest features.

The album has some good beats but French fails to deliver lyrically. Most of his vocals are heavily Auto-Tuned and his lyrics are highly repetitive. It seems as if French relies on the featured artists to make up what he failed to deliver lyrically.

Earlier in the year French spent most of his time on Twitter bashing 50 Cent calling him “Irrelevant” yet the opening track entitled “Once in a While” borrows lines from “Life’s on the Line” by 50 Cent as well as “Murder was the Case” by Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Excuse My French feels more like a mixtape than an album with the heavy amount of features. The album does not break any new grounds whatsoever. There is practically no difference between Excuse My French and any overly Auto-Tuned mixtape you can find on the internet.

Overall Rating: D

Blogging is taking over the Internet these days. Everyone has something to say to an audience online

Blogging is taking over the Internet these days. Everyone has something to say to an audience online. People blog for a variety of reasons, and nurturing a successful blog takes some time and effort. Use the information that you are about to learn to make a blog that reflects your knowledge and expertise.

Remember not to overuse keywords, plug-in, images and ads. If you do, search engines will flag you and will not list you in their results. Instead, write in a way that sounds natural and smooth.

beat software You must update frequently to keep your blog fresh. To encourage readers to return and draw in new readers, you must post fresh content on a regular basis. If you don’t post new content on a regular basis, people won’t get into the habit of visiting your blog regularly. Write at least one post per day.

Buy a domain name for your blog! Buying your own domain is surprisingly inexpensive and makes your blog seem more professional. Visitors will be more likely to recall your website, particularly if the title contains your business’ name or something similar.

You should consider inviting guests to make posts on your blog. This is a good networking move because it helps you develop relationships with other bloggers. You never know how these types of relationships will help your success. It’s amazing what having a tight circle of bloggers will do for your site! It may be that you will require some assistance in the future, and bloggers who have commented on postings in the past may be the best ones to help.

When feedback is given on your blog, respond to it. However, do not let it emotionally affect you. It is important that you understand everyone receives criticism from time to time. If you read some constructive criticism, find a way to use it to improve your blog. Just respond politely to destructive and negative comments and move on. By being mature when dealing with commenters, you’ll get more respect from your readers and you may attract new readers.

Give your readers every possible way to follow and share your blog. Linking your site to popular sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, among others, will make a big difference in the success of your blog. These platforms provide many options for reaching out and communicating with current and potential followers.

Break up longer blogs with subheadings. When you make your posts easier to read, you’ll retain a wider readership. This is an easy step you can take to take your blogging to a whole new level.

Having fun with your blog not only makes it feel less like work, but it’s important to the way your blog is perceived. If you find the topic uninteresting, your readers will also. Write on a topic you love, and enjoy what you create. Smile, get creative, and have fun writing about fun stuff that you like.

The above article has offered several suggestions how you can more effectively use blogs to suit the purpose behind the blog. If you use the suggestions in this article, blogging will become more fun for you, and reading your blog will become more fun for your readers. By using the tips offered in this article, you can have a blog that stands apart from the rest.

A Philadelphia mom was arrested inside her daughter’s school after police say she assaulted an 11-year-old student. Attifa Brown says she was upset her daughter was being bullied at school, but denies ever hitting the child.

“I don’t beat my own child, let alone somebody else’s,” said Brown. Police say there is a videotape of the incident that happened yesterday around 10:00 a.m. inside A.B. Anderson Elementary School in Cobbs Creek.

“The problem here is that we have a 26-year-old mother who has no reason to approach an 11-year-old child, so her credibility as far as I’m concerned is shot,” said Lt. John Walker, Philadelphia Police.

Investigators say Brown went to the school with her daughter to confront the 11-year-old girl, accused of bullying her child. “The tape showed this lady over my daughter for minutes, poking her in the face, pulling her hair and beating her,” said Bobby Webster, mother of the 11-year-old victim.

Webster says her daughter is not a bully. “I thought I taught her to actually defend herself and take care of herself,” said Brown, who added that at the end of the day, “I’m human.” School officials are investigating how Brown was able to walk into the school without signing in or without being questioned.

Brown is facing a long list of charges, including terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and defiant trespass.

Artists are perhaps among the luckiest people in the world who unlike many of us whose life accomplishments are momentarily celebrated in our quarterly corporate reports and quickly forgotten upon retirement, the work of their creativity is forever immortalized eons later. Nujabes is one of the biggest names to come from Japan and I'm not writing this post as an obsessed fan but rather with an understanding that anyone with the ability to create exceptional works ought to be forever remembered.

With his new album Yeezus due for release on June 18 I thought it would be a good idea to do some writing on Kanye before he releases some new music. A good place to start is with a collection of Kanye’s five best beats. Before he became the Louis Vuitton Don, Kanye used to be a relentless studio rat (He famously claimed to make five beats a day for three summers). Before all the Taylor Swift nonsense and Kim K pregnancy he just used be a dude who made brilliant pleasure centre overloading beats. Paying homage to one of the most creative artists of our generation isn’t a bad idea and focusing solely on his sonic inventions is as good a place to start as any. Now I must stress that these aren’t necessarily his best songs. This isn’t about flows and lyrics, although they obviously enhance or detract from the song depending on the circumstance. No, these are purely about the soundscapes ‘Ye is able to construct.

So in no particular order:

Dipset Forever

Once upon a time Kanye used to give his best beats to rappers who could do them justice. Eventually his ego caught up with his talent and ‘Ye started keeping these beats to himself. Which is what makes “Dipset Forever” such a little gem. At the turn of the century Kanye and Just Blaze rediscovered the beauty of chopping up soul samples and while there’ve been a dozen or so more of these types of songs and several prior to “Dipset Forever” I doubt any of them can match it for soulfulness, charisma and sheer prettiness. He’s done the same thing on “Through the Wire” and “Slow Jams” but he made it into a world conquering production technique here. Kanye builds the beat into a one-word chorus using a Chuck Cissel’s sped up vocal sample and somehow manages to evoke a piece of music that seems familiar but is always just outside your grasp. ‘Ye used to be masterful at this (and probably still is), able to pick a word, phrase or note and deconstruct it just to blow it up with orchestral excess. Purple Haze never smelled so sweet.

Jesus Walks

Kanye at once invented and perfected the multi-track hip-hop gospel epic. Over militaristic percussion and after blessing it with a neo-negro-spiritual vibe Kanye draws sounds from everywhere. Little known fact but this is one of the first times Kanye used Auto-Tune as part of the mechanics of the song. He’d do it again on 808s and Heartbreaks and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but this is one of his first rap songs to do it so organically. Ye’s in perfect control here. The drama created by the beat is matched as ‘Ye turns toward God for direction and salvation. Ironic if you bear in mind the iconoclastic/“I am God”/”Hell of a life” era bent his music would come to take on. Honestly though listening to “Jesus Walks” it’s hard to believe that the Almighty can put together a better piece of music, it’s at once a career defining song and for the first time the world was forced to sit up and take notice of his impending greatness.

Drive Slow

A late single of Late Registration era ‘Ye it sums up the symphonic/baroque style era at its best. A beautiful drum break at the top leans into a laid-back mid album cut that sees ‘Ye completely in control. A simple piano stab and soft vocal effects create the impression that Kanye was ever the perfectionist on this one as the rhymes pop up and weave inside and out with the soft trombone book-ending every verse. The spiritual vocals binds it all together and there’s certain sadness in the beat that doesn’t get upstaged by the nostalgia in the rhymes. Yeezy invited GLC and a then-relevant Paul Wall to the party and everyone plays their part to build a little dough-boy tale worthy of a John Singleton movie.

POWER

Handclaps and a King Crimson sample along with a choir deliver a wholloping punch. In many ways the spiritual cousin of “Jesus Walks” in the ambition of its execution. There’s no clear soul sample but choruses swirl around Kanye who stands in the centre of the storm fully aware of the hurricane he helped create. The King Crimson sample also speaks to the personal nature of Kanye’s life. After being vilified in the media it not only addressed his critics, it recontextualised a prog classic. It showed that Kanye’s life fits in snugly within a larger scheme of music history. The beat not only marks the beginning of the maximalist bent Kanye’s music would take post-MBDTF but it also leaves a high water mark for the end of the Kanye who used to have Dropout Bears and rap with a back pack.

Encore

There are a number of beats that make it onto this list that Sean Carter waxed lyrically over. ‘Ye and Jay Z have traded blows on “IZZO (HOVA)”, “Lucifer”, and most of Jay Z’s classic The Blueprint but the best beat ‘Ye ever gave to Jay has to be “Encore”. ‘Ye laced it with the ebullient joy of a convict newly released from the penitentiary and Jay Z’s post retirement victory lap could not have been played out against a better soundtrack. Honestly, this sounds like black superhero music. Jay Z has rapped over better beats since but the monumental nature of the beat managed somehow to make this the musical year zero for the second half of Jay’s career. And no one else but ‘Ye could provide the beats for something as magical as that.
