This week on Californication, Hank Moody’s best friend from High School comes to visit him. Hank is leery of his visit because over the years they have grown apart. He doesn’t believe they have anything in common anymore. He’s right of course. They don’t.  Their lives have gone in completely different directions. But over the course of the show, those differences come to not matter. What they do have in common is where they came from. What they were growing up. They are still friends that wish they had kept in better touch. This episode hit home because last Saturday I went to my High School Reunion. I’d tell you how many years it has been, but it’s a number I’m not comfortable talking about. Lets just say that if falls somewhere between the 10^th and the 30^th. Anyway, I was a little apprehensive about going because it’s always strange to reconnect with people you haven’t spoken to in years. I bet you thought I was going to give the actual number of years there. The sentence would have had more impact with the precise number, but I figured I’d let the writing suffer. As I said, it’s not a number I’m comfortable talking about.

A couple of friends of mine that I hadn’t seen in years came over to my place before the event for a little pre-game. I pre-game for everything. Sporting events, parties, dentist appointments, etc… I imagine a lot people did this because a reunion isn’t something you can step into dead sober. A little liquid courage can be a good thing. And it was. When we walked in the door, I was relaxed and ready to talk because lets face it, a reunion is all about talking. I didn’t see anyone dance, but I saw everyone talking up a storm. The conversations in the room basically drowned out the music. One friend was talking so much, he actually lost his voice. It was a really good time. No one left until they kicked everyone out. That’s the sign of an excellent reunion. So it got me thinking about High School Reunion movies. After doing a little preliminary research, I discovered I’m a pretty big fan of that genre.

Beautiful Girls – This is one of my favorite movies of all time because they get almost everything right. The whole story centers around Timothy Hutton’s character coming home for his 10 year High School Reunion. Why it works is because even though the Reunion is the catalyst for everyone getting together, it’s really about the relationships of the main characters. On the surface they seem one dimensional, but as the movie progresses, you see there is more to each one of them. They aren’t just the jock, the piano player, and the court jester. All they are is a group of guys trying to find their way, and not doing a very good job of it. They are completely different, yet they have each others backs. I think most groups of friends can relate.

The music is this film is sensational. The title song by Pete Droge and The Sinners is the perfect soundtrack for this film. It really sets the tone. Using Beth by Kiss to display a change in attitude of Michael Rapaport’s character was pure genius. It’s funny and surprisingly touching. I can’t believe it worked. The only slight misstep was when the guys all broke out singing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. I like this scene and I hate this scene. It’s a nice moment in the film, but it is also completely unrealistic. I believe guys would sing a song in a bar, just not something by Neil Diamond. Also, before their reunion, they had a pre-game party. You know why, because that’s what people do.

On a side note, the acting in this film is great. Matt Dillon, Timothy Hutton, Michael Rapaport, Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, and Lauren Holly nail their roles. They’re perfect. But it’s Natalie Portman that steals the show. She’s only 13 in the film, but out acts everyone in every scene. It’s unbelievable. You start believing she’s the most beautiful girl. Timothy Hutton’s character completely falls under her spell, as does anyone who watches the movie. I know right now you think I’m creepy, but that is the way the movie was designed. You are supposed to feel that way. I won’t be judged. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself the favor. You won’t be disappointed.

Grosse Pointe Blank – The premise for this movie is fantastic. A hitman returns home to kill someone and attend his High School Reunion. Sure, it’s unrealistic, but it totally works. The reason is that the hitman is conflicted with life and wants to get back the girl he deserted on Prom Night. It’s funny, a little violent, and it has Dan Aykroyd as a rival hitman. What’s not to like?

The acting is superb. John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin and Jeremy Piven do a great job making this premise work. The reunion itself is hysterical. Piven chasing after Jenny Slater is worth the price of admission. Granted, no one at my reunion got into a fight to the death, but how would I know if they did? Only Cusack, Piven and Driver knew about his fight, so it may have happened. I didn’t get in to that fight at my reunion. As far as you know. Oh, and if you don’t own the soundtrack to this film, your music library is incomplete. Go buy it today. You’ll thank me later.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion – I don’t have a lot to say about this movie. I thought it was o.k. It had some good moments. Janeane Garafalo was funny. I thought the reunion was a joke. It wasn’t realistic in any sense. I didn’t really like the main characters. I thought Mira Sorvino, who clearly loves a reunion movie, was decent. My biggest problem with the film is that I don’t like Lisa Kudrow. I don’t think she’s funny. I didn’t like her on Friends, and I don’t like her in this movie. She’s like the female Dane Cook. Her comedy leaves me wishing for real comedy. O.k, that was a cheap shot. She’s better than Dane Cook. Either way, this High School Reunion was obviously written by someone who has never been to a real reunion.

Peggy Sue Got Married – This was the first High School Reunion movie I ever watched. It did a couple of things I really like. It showed you the reunion, and then let Kathleen Turner go back in time to see if she would have done things differently. On some level, everyone wants that opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to change the way they did some things in High School?

Nicolas Cage was awesome. He truly acted in this film like he did in Raising Arizona and Adaptation. The only real problem with this movie was that when Kathleen Turner goes back in time, she looks so much older than the rest of her classmates. She’s beautiful, but way older. It takes a few minutes for you to let that go. (A quick aside, what happened to Kathleen Turner? Have you seen her lately? How can someone go from being so white hot and sexy to what she has become. It’s not age. Something else is going on there and I’m afraid to know the answer. She is pretty funny on Californication, though). It’s been a while since I’ve seen this movie, but my guess is that it will hold up.

Reunions have a way of making you take stock of your life. You start wondering where the time went and how you ended up in your current situation. I don’t like to do that. It never turns out well.

What I’m going to take from the Reunion is not my station in life, but that I can still be friends with people who no longer have anything in common with me. We grew up together. We know what we once were. That’s big. No matter how much you think you’ve changed, who you were is a big part of what you have become. It was great seeing my friends. I missed them. Lets hope it doesn’t take another five or ten years to see each other again.

Well, it turns out Beautiful Girls isn’t much of a chick flick at all. It’s what I call a guy’s chick flick. One that’s supposed to make guy’s feel better about being assholes or something. I don’t know, but I didn’t really enjoy this movie for a couple reasons.

1- Uma Thurman. I hate Uma Thurman.

2- Natalie Portman. I’m not a fan of the Portman.

3- Timothy Hutton plays a grown ass man who is kind of lusting after a 13 year-old. It’s kind of weird in a not very charming way. I don’t know, maybe I’m just uptight or something, but I didn’t like it.

Basically, this guy returns to his little hometown in bum-fuck nowhere for his high school reunion where  all his high school buddies haven’t changed all that much since. They’re all in relationships or kind-of-relationships where they bitch about their women not being beautiful enough or have problems with fucking one women for the rest of their life.

I found it all really very….blah. One guy is boning a married woman who he is supposedly in denial about being still in love with – meanwhile he’s in a kind-of relationship with someone else. See what I mean? It made me very anti-man while watching this.

One other grown ass man has posters of half-naked supermodels all over his wall. Uma Thurman plays the town whore without actually sleeping with anyone. typical.

Rosie O’Donnell is also in the movie. No comment.

Worth watching: If you’re a guy that needs to be stroked and made to feel better about being a douche, sure.

Cuando la ví, rondaba esa edad, así que quizás por ello me tocó muy profundo.

Es una visión y una reflexión sobre las relaciones personales, el amor, la perdida de la juventud…

Willie (Thimoty Hutton) va a cumplir los treinta… toca el piano en un pub nocturno de la gran ciudad y ahora tiene que regresar a su pequeño y nevado pueblo natal para celebrar el décimo aniversario de su graduación junto a sus amigos y compañeros del instituto. Allí se encontrará que las cosas, aunque parezcan a simple vista que no han cambiado mucho, no son las mismas que cuando se marchó hace diez años. Su padre está sumido en una depresión desde que murió su madre, su hermano está totalmente descontrolado, tiene nuevos vecinos en la casa de su padre… con una adorable e inteligente jovencita de trece años (Natalie Portman) por la sentirá una fuerte atracción, por otra parte algunos de sus amigos ya se han casado, hasta uno de ellos ya tiene un par de críos, otros se intentan aferrar a la adolescencia eternamente… o vivir del pasado. Pero una cosa es segura, su amistad es eterna.

Willie aprovecha también este viaje para intentar poner sus ideas en orden… llegan los treinta y el miedo al futuro nace en él. Debe de elegir seguir ganando una miseria tocando el piano en pubs o aceptar un empleo de comercial que le han ofrecido y renunciar a los sueños de su juventúd. También está el amor, tiene que reflexionar sobre su relación con Tracy (Annabel Gish), una guapa e inteligente abogada que conoció en la gran ciudad y con la que ya lleva un tiempo, el suficiente para tener que elegir dar el paso del compromiso o dejarlo… aclarar sus sentimientos e ideas.

Y, entre medias, está Uma Thurman, representando la mujer fuerte e independiente, sin lazos con el resto de los protagonistas, más que ser prima del dueño del bar a quien visita de vez en cuando, y a quien todos ven como una diosa, o Rosie O’Donnel, la gordita que pasa de los hombres porque todos pasan de ella, pero da la visión realista de las relaciones entre hombres y mujeres.

Maravillosos diálogos entre Hutton y Portman, el contraste entre un personaje que comienza a vivir su juventud y otro que siente que la está perdiendo.

Matt Dillon interpreta al amigo que fue una gran estrella del instituto y ahora ya no es más que el quita nieves del pueblo, que vive atormentado y confuso por poner los cuernos a su novia (Mira Sorvino) a la que ama, con su antiguo amor del instituto (Lauren Holly), casada ahora con un tío con pelas y una gran casa.

Grandes actores y actrices, algunas por las que siempre estuve atraído por su belleza, (Thurman, Gish, Portman, Holly), que no figuran en las listas de las más guapas, pero que sin duda son “beautiful girls”.

Una entrañable película sobre la amistad, las relaciones humanas, los sueños y el paso del tiempo.

Ahora , casi 15 años después, la he visto con otra perspectiva. Es curioso como hay cosas que cambian tan poco, que se siguen repitiendo, independientemente de en qué lugar te encuentres, en que circunstancias se desarrolle tu vida, en dónde vivas… Las personas pasamos por las mismas etapas, dudas, situaciones…
