One week before I start my first “real job,” I couldn’t feel any more like an adult.  Then I got a swift kick to the groin by my kindergarten-self.  The CW had a special 90-minute movie entitled “Turtles Forever.”  Now, I had watched the new TMNT cartoons, and although I enjoyed watching them for Turtles’ sake, they were not the Turtles of old.  My turtles, the early 90s incarnation, are THE turtles, and I think most of you would agree with me.

So you can understand why I might have been hesitant to sit and watch this entire movie.  But then it happened.

The movie opened with a classic Turtles entrance- out of the shadows they save the day.  I noticed something unexpected.  The masks that the shadowed turtles were wearing looked oddly familiar… something old.  Turns out I was right.  The old turtles were BACK.  They had warped into an alternate dimension (inhabited by the new turtles of course) and wallah- 2 sets of turtles in one show.

And where there are two sets of turtles, you have to have two sets of Shredders.  It was the Technodrome that warped the turtles, which of course warped Shedder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the robotic Foot Soldiers.  IT WAS AWESOME.

This movie did a lot to point out how ridiculous the old turtles were- always worried about pizza, jokes, and generally tomfoolery.  The use of trashcans to take out enemies was a favorite joke in this movie.  However, I think that’s why we all liked them so much.  They were lighthearted and fun, less intent on making sense and being realistic (I mean, it was a show about TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES right?).

The main part of the story is that good ol’ Shed-Head has finally figured out how to destroy the turtles once and for all.  After learning about alternate dimensions and seeing that every dimensions has its own set of turtles (a cool moment where you get to see about 15 different versions of the turtles, including live-action movie turtles), he decides he must warp to Turtle-Prime and destroy Laird and Eastman’s very first comic book versions.  Turtle-Prime Turtles are BAMFs by the way.

Overall, this was a great way to spend my Saturday morning.  It reminded me of all the good times I had with the Heroes on a Half-Shell back in the day, and the story was actually really really good.

Sonny Rollins: Moving Out (Prestige 0888072315945)
Sonny in 1954 with Kenny Doreham on trumpet, Elmo Hope on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. This is still bebop inspired music, and swift from the start with the title track, even swifter to follow with Swingin’ For Bumsy. The whole band is cooking, especially Dorham and Hope in their solos, and drum connoisseurs will notice something strange about Blakey’s sound. Where’s teh hi-hat? Apparently due to some “technical issue” – did he leave it in the cab on the way to the session? – Art is sans certain cymbals.

The band calms for the ballad, Silk ‘n’ Satin, with Rollins in imperious form, luxuriating in the lower tones of the tenor from the start. Nice solo again from Hope and there are some lovely distant, echoey trumpet lines behind the saxophone on its re-entry, and it is over all too quickly.

Solid is a regular blues and a good-time thing.

Then, for the final track on this RVG remastered disc, we switch bands and with Sonny for a nearly 11-minute meander through More Than You Know are Thelonious Monk on piano, Tommy Potter on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. It’s a great tune, Sonny’s tongued phrasing on the melody is thick and his tone lush, and Monk plays it just as you’d expect, rich, crunchy chords pushing those off-off beats. Worth the price for this track alone.

No, it’s not a Jimmie Lunceford original.  But I just read a newspaper profile by Rachel Swan devoted to the drummer Donald Bailey (whose work I know from recordings he made with Jimmie Rowles) where he spoke about being a young player in Philadelphia.  These words leaped out at me (italics mine):

Bailey started playing drums as a preteen by practicing along with his brother’s records. His timing couldn’t have been better: Be-bop had become the avant-garde, and Philly was a veritable hotbed of it. John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, Buster Williams, Jimmy Smith, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker all lived in Philly at some point in their careers — and that’s only a partial list. Unknowns like Bailey would hobnob with these elder statesmen at places like the Blue Note Club and get whatever they could get. At that time, the scene was more of a meritocracy, said Bailey. “Nowadays, anybody can get up on the bandstand and play. We couldn’t do that when I was coming up,” the drummer said. “You just couldn’t do it. You would either be too embarrassed or they would embarrass you. They would take you by your pants and throw you out the door.”
